Discussion of the paper of C. M. YOUNG, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 129, September, 1917, pp. 1369 to 1384. CARL SCHOLZ, Chicago, Ill.-Mr. Young was kind enough to' allude to the development of a mine in which I am now engaged. Several months ago the Burlington Railroad decided to open a mine in the field Which they own in Franklin County containing some 15,000 acres .(6070 ha.) of coal, ranging in thickness from 8 to 12 ft. (2 to 3.6 m.). This proposition in itself is attractive to any mining engineer, but with the backing of a large company I saw an opportunity to do some novel work in the construction line, and for several months I have been investigating and working on the problem of developing what I hope will be the largest and best equipped mine in the State of Illinois. The shaft will be sunk at a place where the coal lies at a depth of 600 ft. (182 m.) and conditions both of the surface and of the coal are ideal in every way; the seam is almost level, and we had only 7 ft. (2 m.) of surface clay to go through. We are going to hoist by skips in order to reduce the rope speed. I believe that is a long step in the direction of economy, because we not only double the output of the mine by hoisting the contents of two cars atone time, but we reduce the proportion of dead weight. In our case there will be 20 tons of coal and 18,000 lb. of skip, or 55 per cent. net and 45 per cent. tare. That, of course, necessitates less than half the rope speed for the same tonnage, and we all know that speed means power and power means cost. Skip hoisting permits the use of solid-end gate cars, which is an advantage. The cost of these cars will be in the neighborhood of $250 apiece; They are well built, with roller-bearing wheels of the most up-to-date type, spring draw-bars, and refinements of-that character which are necessary to move the loads most advantageously.

ABSTRACT A critical summary is given of the analytical procedures available to the engineer for the analysis of slope stability. The emphasis is on the various types of behaviour that have been measured in different rock types. A method of assessing the possibility of failure of simple three dimensional wedges is provided in an attempt to demonstrate how structural features can be included in a meaningful manner. An outline for theoretical design is provided that stresses the importance of carrying out a 'Back Analysis' of large and small instrumented failures so that realistic parameters of the rock mass forming the pit slopes can be obtained.

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-B alloys has been measured up to the solubility limit for the formation of boron nitride. The activity coefficient of nitrogen increases with increasing boron content in the range 0 to 7 wt pct B. From experimen -tal data, values have been calculated for the B-N interaction parameter e3 at temperatures in the range 1550" to 1750°C. A value of 0.038 has been estimated for the boron self-interaction parameter eg at 1550°C. The standard free energy of decomposition of boron nitride into the elements dissolved in liquid iron has been determined to be: ?F° = 45,900 -21.25T in the range from 1550° to 1750°C. The nitride is assumed to be of composition BN. BORON nitride has an unusual combination of properties which make it appear attractive in a wide range of engineering applications. Some of its more important and most recent applications are in the nuclear area, particularly in connection with the liquid-metal cooled reactor concept now receiving considerable emphasis. Boron nitride has a high degree of stability at elevated temperatures. It also has excellent ma-chinability and the ease with which its crystals deform suggests applications as a lubricant. These properties stem from a hexagonal layer-type structure similar to the structure of graphite. One of its primary uses to date has been for seals in liquid-metal pumping systems. It is also used in nuclear reactors as an insulating layer to separate two solid metals which are not themselves compatible under the conditions of temperature and atmosphere in which they are used. Its inertness to liquid metals has also suggested use as a mold-release agent in casting processes. In addition to its excellent machinability and reported inertness to liquid metals such as iron, silicon, aluminum, copper, and zinc, boron nitride has high thermal conductivity and excellent thermal shock resistance. This combination of properties would make it appear ideal as a refractory crucible material for refining of high-purity liquid metals, for example high-quality steels. However, since it is known that concentrations of boron as low as 50 ppm can have a marked effect on the physical properties of certain steels,' in particular on the creep and stress-rupture properties, an investigation was undertaken to define accurately the chemical equilibrium among boron, nitrogen, and liquid iron in the range of steelmaking temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two experimental approaches to this problem were employed: a Sieverts' method and a quenching method. In the first method, the Sieverts' technique was used to measure the equilibrium nitrogen solubility in liquid Fe-B alloys of 0 to 7 pct B as a function of nitrogen gas pressure over the melt. The solubility limit of the boron nitride phase formed was determined by the point of departure of the nitrogen absorption from Sieverts' Law. This technique has been applied to liquid Fe-Ti alloys by Rao and parlee,' to liquid Fe-A1 alloys by Evans and Pehlke,3 and to solid Fe-V alloys by Fountain and Chipman.4 In the second method a melt of liquid iron was held in a crucible of boron nitride under a known partial pressure of nitrogen gas. After thermodynamic equilibrium was attained, the melt was quenched in a stream of helium and then analyzed by wet-chemical methods for boron and nitrogen. The Sieverts' apparatus used in the first method was essentially of the same design as the one described by Pehlke and Elliott.5 The charge materials were vacuum-melted high-purity iron (Ferro-vac E) supplied by the Crucible Steel Co. and -325 mesh boron powder supplied by Cooper Metallurgical Associates of Cleveland, Ohio. The boron contained less than 0.02 wt pct O, according to supplier's analysis. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used to contain the melt. Examination of solidified melts showed these crucibles to be satisfactory with no evidence of any reaction or physical penetration of the crucible wall by the melt. The melt temperature was measured by a disappearing filament-type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the melt surface through a 1/4-in.-diam sight hole in the crucible lid. ThREe years ago it was decided by the management to granulate the matte that is produced in the smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Hereulaneum, Mo., thereby doing away with a large amount of labor in handling the matte and in subsequent crushing. On Mar. 1, 1915, the granulator was put in operation and up to Jan. 1, 1916, 18,735 tons had been granulated. The four blast furnaces have a daily output of about 280 tons of pig lead and 100 tons of matte assaying about 11.0 per cent. Pb. It is expected that projected improvements in roasting methods will eliminate more sulphur from the charge, and cut down the matte-fall to about one-half of the present figure. The blast furnaces are tapped into movable forehearths or settlers, 6 ft. by 4 ft. by 22 in., the slag overflowing into 27-cu. ft. slag cars which are hauled to the dump by electric locomotives. Previous to the adoption of granulation, the matte was tapped from the forehearths into small slag pots which were dumped after cooling. The matte cakes were broken with sledges, and transported to the crushing plant for fine crushing and screening. Here the matte was reduced to 1/4-in. size before being fed to the roaster bins. A Wedge and a Holthoff mechanical furnace are used for preroasting before sintering on the Dwight and Lloyd machines. The matte is returned to the furnaces as an iron flux until the gradually accumulating copper content reaches about 7 per cent., after which it is put aside to be concentrated in a small copper blast furnace, the resultant high-grade matte being sold. When the matte does not settle readily from the slag, two settling devices are often used, the second one being a large catch-pot, which gathers any matte that may overflow from the forehearth, the slag then overflowing from the catch-pot into the slag cars. When full of matte, the catch-pot is removed, allowed to cool, and the contents broken and crushed. a With the present plan of granulating, the matte is tapped into 6-cu. ft. iron ladles. Flotation kinetics is the study of the variation in amount of froth overflow product with flotation time, and the quantitative identification of all rate con- trolling variables. With such variables maintained constant, the algebraic relationship between the proportion of mineral floated and flotation time is a flotation rate equation. This contains the constant values of all the rate determining variables implicit in one or more rate constants which must be evaluated from experimental data. The form or forms of the rate equation can either be deduced from assumptions or facts established about the mechanism of the process, or, more commonly, determined empirically or by analogy with similar rate process. (See pages 215 to 226 and 221 to 227.) The earliest contributions on flotation kinetics came in the mid- ~hirties,3,27,31 with interest increasing in recent years. The broad goal of these studies is the reduction of the total variability of a flotation system to equations among the individual variables, or among a lesser number of dimensionless groups.43 Although the goal is at present far from realization, its attainment will yield many practical advantages. The quantitative under- standing of the process should lead to improvements both in metallurgical results and flotation cell design. It should lead also to reliable methods for scaling-up* of laboratory and pilot plant results to full size operation without the need for expensive and time-consuming mill tests on commercial machines. Finally, this type of quantitative information will assist the automation of flotation cells and circuits as well as control by computers. Replacing present methods of control based on post-mortem assays and trial and error manipulation of reagents and cell variables by control through exact process analysis should yield higher levels of grade and recovery through reduction of the large variability of present-day results. CHEMICAL ENGINEERING ANALOGIES: Industrial flotation always involves flow of pulp through a series of stirred tanks. It thus bears formal analogy to many chemical engineering processes, the kinetics of which in flow systems has been studied for many de- cades.38,39,73,83 It will be useful to review these studies before considering flotation kinetics. Application of computers to present-day open-pit mining with bucket wheel excavators (BWE) is discussed. The development of the wheel excavators and their use in mining are discussed along with the necessity for building a computer model of the bucket wheel and the mathematical formulation of the problem. The simulation procedure, testing the model, and test results are summarized. Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the 20th century. Nearly 90% of all metals and mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management, and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mold of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined. The development of vast low-grade deposits and thick overburden deposits calls for better tools to handle the enormous amount of materials. A natural solution to this problem is the use of bucket wheel excavators (BWE), which employ a continuous cutting head to feed the materials handling system. High productivity, versatility, economy of operation, and adaptability to most types of haulage systems combine to make BWE's attractive for large earth-moving operations. "Operating costs are being pushed down by the impact of giant haulage units, by high-speed conveyors, and computerized railroads. Matching all these with the continuous output of BWEs, one can visualize increased production at much lower costs." Historical Background The wheel excavator, which was patented in Germany in 1913, made its first appearance in an open-pit lignite mine in 1920. From this early beginning, however, BWEs were slow coming into practice. Initial developments were dampened by many design problems. From 1936 onward, major developments in design improved the wheel's ability, capacity, and versatility. A literature survey shows that wheel excavators are being used in Australia, Zambia, South Africa, the Congo, India, Indonesia, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Great Britain, Guyana, Yugoslavia, Morocco, Germany, Canada, and the U.S. for mining and loading chalk, lignite, clay, sandstone, phosphate, broken ore of iron, coal, shale, loose and semi-loose rock overburden.' A recent LMG* BWE at work in a German lignite mine weighs 6790 tons with an hourly capacity of 11,000 cu m. Although the BWE has wide applicability, its application to new mining areas poses a problem. Because of the large capital investment involved in BWE application and the narrow profit margins in mining low-grade ores or coal at depth, little margin of error can be tolerated in the selection, design, and operation of these machines. The questions that need to be answered prior to installation of a BWE for a mineable deposit are: 1.) What are the anticipated BWE performance characteristics? 2) Which method of BWE operation is most efficient? Attempts to answer these questions require a thorough knowledge of the mining system and the BWE operation. One approach is the building of a computer-ori-ented simulation model to determine how information and policy create the character of the BWE system under consideration. BWE Operation Modern BWEs generally excavate in blocks. Fig. la shows a BWE working in an established cut. The wheel is positioned to travel on the pit floor in line with the top edge of the old highwall. As it advances, a new highwall is exposed in the direction of excavation. Digging is done by rotating the wheel, swinging it from side to side in long parallel arcs, and "crowding" into the bank, by advancing the entire machine, or by the travel of the digging boom if an automatic crowd is available (Fig. lb). A second way by which the wheel can be advanced into the bank is by the falling cut method. A brief description of each of these methods follows. Cut with a Crowding Machine: At the end of every swing, the digging boom can be extended by the thickness of cut desired and the boom swung back in the reverse direction. Obviously, the thickness of bank excavated does not vary with the boom position; therefore, the slewing motion of the boom is fairly constant for uniform output. The thickness through which the digging boom can be advanced into the bank is theoretically calculated from the formula'

THE work performed by the Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence is likely to prove of permanent value, less perhaps for the conclusions it has reached and for the recommendations it has based upon these than for the admirable exposition which it affords of the law concerning mining subsidence and of the legal status of the person who has suffered damage by reason of such subsidence, as also of him whose working has caused the damage. The Commission was appointed by Royal Warrant in the middle of 1925 and delivered its final report in the middle of 1927. The terms of reference to the Commission were as follows: "To consider the operation of the law relating to the support of the surface of the land, and of buildings or works on or under the surface, by underlying or adjacent minerals; to enquire into the extent and gravity of the damage caused by subsidence owing to the extraction of minerals and the incidence of the resulting liability; and to report what steps should be taken, by legislation or otherwise, to remedy, equitably to all persons concerned, any defects or hardships that may be found to arise in existing conditions."

A study of the literature shows that the greater part of research work on annealing of cold-worked iron has been for the purpose of studying the effect on grain-size and properties other than hardness. No reference has been found of experimental work of the same nature as that explained in this short paper. The material used throughout was Vismera iron, an iron containing 0.03 carbon and made several years ago by the Inland Steel Co. One-half inch stock was cut into cylinders ¾ in. long. The Robinson Mining District, near Ely, Nev., is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an eight mile long east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize some of the relations between porphyry alteration, metamor-phism, and mineralization: 1) Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in m-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. 2) Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded by unaltered porphyry. 3) Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to altered porphyry. 4) Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5) Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. 6) In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7) Chemical changes in the altered porphyry and metamorphosed rocks appear to be related. The foregoing relations support a hypothesis that the porphyry alteration, the metamorphism of the sedimentary rocks, and the ore deposition were all part of a continuous hydrothermal process which probably closely attended the porphyry intrusion. The Robinson Mining District, most often referred to as the Ruth or Ely District, is located in eastern Nev. and is one of the major porphyry copper districts of the world. Production from 1908 through 1962 was nearly 250 million tons of ore averaging a little over one percent copper with a total metal value of nearly one billion dollars. The ore has been produced from six major disseminated-type deposits with the Liberty Pit deposit accounting for 70% of the total district production. Less than one million tons of base metal and gold ores have been produced from the replacement-type deposits of the district. Approximately 20% of the district production has come from underground mining operations; the pit ore has been mined with shovels and removed by train haulage, truck-train haulage combinations, truck haulage, and presently by a combination truck-skip system. Many of the ore deposits formerly worked by underground methods have been and are being exploited by open pit methods. (See Fig. I.) Two co.'s have accounted for virtually the entire production from the district. In 1958 Kennecott Copper Corp. acquired the district assets of Consolidated Coppermines Corp. and is now the sole ore producer in the district. Present operations are confined to the Liberty Pit where 22,500 tons of ore averaging a little less than 0.8% copper is mined per day. Cutoff grade is 0.4% copper, and the stripping ratio is three to one. The ore is hauled by rail 23 miles to the McGill Reduction Plant where it is concentrated to about 20% copper. Molybdenite is recovered as a by-product in the mill. The copper concentrates are smelted in McGill, and the blister copper is shipped for refining to Balt. where gold, silver, platinum and palladium are recovered. The Robinson Mining District has been well known as a porphyry copper district for the past fifty years, but many geologists are unaware of the fact that a large portion of the production has come from disseminated ore found in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The scope of this paper describes the occurrences of disseminated ore in the various metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and presents evidence for the hypothesis that these ores are genetically, spacially, and coevally related to the disseminated ore in the porphyry rocks. Publication of this paper was granted by the management of Kennecott Copper Corp. A. H. James suggested and encouraged the writing of the manuscript. Special mineralogical and spectrographic analyses were performed by the Kennecott Research Center. AMONG the minerals exhibited at the Atlanta Exhibition of 1881, soapstone, kaolin, and asbestos were well represented. The first two occur in large quantities, of very pure quality, throughout the South. The last is somewhat limited in amount, yet in certain localities it exists in masses sufficiently large to pay for working; in North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama it has been mined with some profit. I would, in this paper, call special attention to the minerals soapstone and kaolin, because their many valuable qualities seem to have been al most entirely overlooked by our Southern manufacturers. Steatite, particularly, occurs in such large quantities, and generally in such close proximity to the great iron regions of Alabama and Georgia, that it is amazing that the iron companies will persist in sending abroad under. heavy expense for firebrick. It would require a much smaller sum of money to quarry this rock and place it at the various furnaces ; and the results obtained, I am sure, would prove its superiority over the majority of firebrick brought into this region. Soapstone, as well as kaolin, is found throughout the metamorphic regions of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Below-will be found seven analyses that I have made of this mineral, taken from various points in the four States above mentioned. I have also subjected these same specimens to severe fire-tests, and the results were very satisfactory. The tests were conducted in the following manner: Small portions of the compact variety were carefully weighed and placed in a Fletcher's new crucible furnace for gas, and subjected for half an hour to a heat that will in 12 minutes fuse iron. The only effect upon these specimens was a slight change in color .to a darker shade, a small loss in weight, due evidently to the evaporation of water, and, in one or two specimens, a slight degree of fusion on the sharp edges. The first specimen subjected to investigation was taken from a large outcropping in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Specific gravity, 2.88 ; hardness, 1.9; color, blue gray. In the introduction to an excellent pamphlet, John Gross' makes the following statements: Although marked progress has been made along mechanical lines, the theory and conception of underlying principles have not advanced so rapidly. This lack of advance in theory may be attributed to the unfortunate situation resulting from the controversy as to whether the Rittinger or Kick law is applicable to crushing. Many pages of the technical literature are burdened with theoretical discussions in favor of one or the other of these laws, which have tended to cloud rather than to clear the atmosphere. Realizing the situation, the Milling Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, through its secretary, E. A. Hersam, studied the milling industry and, because of the apparently hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute (5, 13, 14, 0, i8, 19, 21, 22, 23. 24, 30. 34), concluded that a foundation for the theory of crushing was of primary importance. The numbers in the paragraph quoted refer to papers listed by Mr. Gross in his Bibliography on Crushing and Grinding.1 One is obliged to infer that these papers show "hopeless lack of agreement in the Kick versus Rittinger dispute." No. 22 is a paper by Arthur O. Gates2 and No. 23 is one by the writer.3 Employing the subject matter contained in papers Nos. 22 and 23 2,3 the writer will show that their authors formulated identical conclusions, based solely on experimental evidence. Exactly the same defect in the Stadler hypothesis was described in each of the two papers, although entirely different experimental methods were employed in uncovering it. Both of the authors, independently, formulated the conclusion that Rittinger's was a true hypothesis and Stadler's false. The evidence in a third paper4 will be employed to prove that Stadler's hypothesis, when examined experimentally, is worthless. STADLER'S HYPOTHESIS WORTHLESS It is the writer's opinion that the evidence available in 1915 and the corroborating evidence in 1916 was amply sufficient to eliminate the need for any further consideration of Stadler's hypothesis. Certainly the evidence produced in 1918 dealt this hypothesis its coup de grace. It follows, therefore, that in the year 1918 there was only one credible hypothesis left-the Rittinger hypothesis. Gates' Opinion What information is available in Mr. Gates' paper?2 His conclusions are not consecutively summarized, none the less they are perfectly clear. On page 876, Gates says, and it is a very significant utterance: But my results show, among other things, that many more of Stadler's energy units are obtained per foot-pound-applied in coarse than in fine crushing. This suggests a doubt as to the correctness of his unit, since one would expect a foot-pound-applied to produce the same number of "energy units," whether the feed and resulting product were coarse or fine. Before the outbreak of the war in 1914, the only electric-furnace smelting plant operating on a commercial basis west of the Mississippi River was an electric pig-iron plant in California; rare metal ores were not smelted, concentrates of molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, and vanadium ores being shipped East for reduction. Practically no chrome ore was being mined, and only comparatively small amounts of manganese ore. Today there are two electric smelting plants in California, one in Washington, one in lowa, and four in Colorado; two plants are under construction in California, and one in Montana. Ores of manganese, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten are now smelted in the West, and although uranium and vanadium concentrates are still shipped to the East, they will probably be treated in western plants in a short time. The plant of the Ferro Alloy Co., at Utah Junction, contains one 750-kw., three-phase furnace, to which power is supplied by three 250-lrw. transformers, connected /Y to give 129 volts on the furnace cables, the transformer ratio being 13,200 to 75 volts. The furnace operates with an actual voltage of 120 volts, and produces about 3 tons of ferrochrome per 24 hr. from 40-per cent. Cr2O3 ore. The furnace consists of a steel shell of circular cross-section, 8 ft. (2.43 m.) in diameter by 7 ft. (2.13 m.) deep, lined with magnesite, and having three vertical carbon electrodes 12 in. (30.48 cm.) in diameter. A 450-kw. furnace, of the same size as the 750-kw. furnace, is also operated on chrome ore. RACKLESS equipment is being used by the T Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. to develop a folded limestone deposit economically and safely with inexperienced men. Cost and quality of development stone results in a saving when it is used instead of outside sources of limestone. This favorable cost has been attained by following a methods development and training program described in this paper. It is expected that further savings in favor of the mined stone will be made when stopes now being prepared are in production. The present equipment will be used for loading from stope draw points. The limestone is blended with quarried cement rock to serve as raw material for Portland cement, first produced in this country by Coplay Cement Manufacturing Co. from a process developed by its president, David 0. Saylor, in 1873. For many years the cement rock alone or with a small amount of added limestone was used for raw materials. Later as specifications were raised and the richer portions of quarries were depleted, limestone from outside sources was required in increasing amounts. In 1925 D. J. Uhle, the general manager, began to prospect company property for limestone. It was known that the argillaceous cement rock was underlain by crystalline high calcium limestone. After an extensive drilling program it was found that there were large reserves of limestone underlying a recumbent syncline exposed in the south wall of the company's No. 3 cement rock quarry. A quarry was started on the vertical limb of this fold in 1927, and by 1930 the full requirement of the plant was met. After 1945 production diminished because of the occurrence of dolomite beds in the south wall. The quarry floor was then 135 ft below the cement rock level and 285 ft below surface. There has been considerable controversy regarding the structure and mineral constituents produced when iron ore is sintered. This investigation was undertaken in order to establish the fundamental reactions that take place in the sintering process by determining the nature of the resulting minerals. The writer's immediate interest in the subject arose mainly from the request of E. W. Davis for information based on a microscopic study of sinter submitted by him in May, 1926. In the author's preliminary work, samples of iron-ore sinter were secured from the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station and from commercial plants. These were polished by the usual methods for polishing opaque ores. In order to study these surfaces satisfactorily, it is necessary to magnify them rather highly, a range from 100 to 1000 dia. being used. For the higher magnifications oil-immersion lenses and an intense source of light are necessary. After the preliminary study had shown the problems involved, a series of small samples were sintered under carefully controlled conditions and with analyzed materials. Variations in the relative amounts of ore, coal and water were made in order to study the effect of each constituent. The attempt has been to arrive at a clearer understanding of the sintering process and the reactions involved without reference to any preconceived notion as to sinter. It is clear that the study of polished surfaces has yielded results not possible with thin sections alone. The thin sections made in this work were found unsatisfactory at magnification greater than 75, whereas magnifications of 1000 were easily studied with reflected light on carefully polished surfaces. A rather complete statement of observed facts is made so that the reader may form his own conclusions. The writer's interpretations are suggested. The elastic earth waves produced naturally by earthquakes have been used for a long time as evidence from which to draw conclusions in ; regard to the constitution of the interior and crust of the earth. The I elastic earth waves produced artificially by occasional explosions and ' recorded by seismological observatories were used to draw conclusions regarding the geology of the intervening area. Intentionally produced elastic earth waves in the past five years have come to be used extensively in the investigation of very local geologic structure. The scismic method of working geologic structure, which makes use of artificially controlled explosions and the resulting earth waves, has developed almost clairvoyant power in handling certain geologic situations; and, in the discovery of salt domes in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of Texas and Louisiana, it has scored the most brilliant success. The first proposal for the use of artificial earthquakes in the study of velocity of elastic earth waves in the surface formations of the earth's crust were made before 1888, by the English seismologists mallet and Abbot. Partly on the basis of their work, A. Schmidt in 1888 proposed the use of time-(Iistnncc graphs of artificial earthquakes to study the variation of vellocity with depth. Belar in 1902 proposed the practical 'application of such investigation in connection with boring tunnels. Galitzcn repeated1y (1912. I9IX) proposed the use of explosions to study the velocity of the longitudinal and transverse waves in the uppermost formations and pointed out that the velocity depended in a high degree on the physical character of the beds and that from changes in the velocity, conclusions could be drawn in regard to the composition of the beds. Somewhat the same thought was proposed by von dem Borne (1908), by Benndorf, Udden and others.'
