Laboratory displacement tests were performed to study oil recovery elficiency by gravity drainage in fractured systems under miscible conditions. The porous media used were cylindrical Berea and Blue Jacket sandstone cores containing a number of well-defined, artificially formed, vertical and subvertical fractures. Butane and Soltrol 130 were the two miscible fluids used. The purpose of the study was to examine the influences of the displacement rate, fracture density, fracture orientation, fracture permeability, matrix permeability, crossflow, core length and connate water on the oil recovery. It was found that displacement rate, matrix permeability and the subvertical fractures affected oil recovery most. The critical flow rate, based on the matrix permeability, was found to be a significant factor in the process. For displacement rates below the critical flow rate, the oil recovery efficiency appeared to be unaffected by the density of the subvertical fractures. At the high displacement rates, the fracture density becomes important, with the recovery being the most efficient in the core having the greatest number of the subvertical fractures. The magnitude of the fracture permeability, the fracture orientation, the core length and the connate water have little effect on the oil recovery efficiency. INTRODUCTION Gravity drainage under miscible conditions from relatively thick reservoirs can be a very efficient recovery process, especially at low flow rates where the gravity forces are dominant and, consequently, the adverse viscous fingers associated with the unfavorable viscosity ratio are minimized or eliminated. Such a process might involve injection of an LPG or some solvent bank at the crest and then driving the bank with dry gas. For some favorable combination of reservoir temperature, pressure and oil composition, there may be no need to inject any solvent bank, since enrichment of the dry gas by the light ends of the crude creates an in-situ solvent bank. Slobod and Howlett2 have studied the effects of gravity segregation in vertical unconsolidated porous media under miscible conditions in the laboratory. The main variables in their study were the viscosity ratio, the density differences and the rate of flow. In this study, the objective was to find the influence of fractures on gravity drainage under miscible conditions. A greater number of related variables were also studied. LABORATORY STUDY CORE DESCRIPTION Displacement tests were performed mostly in cylindrical Berea sandstone cores. In a few cases in which a much lower matrix permeability was desired, Blue Jacket sandstone cores were used. The vertical fractures were formed by cutting the cores with a thin circular blade or by parting them along a bedding plane. The vertical fracture plane always contained the axis of the cylindrical core. The subvertical fractures, cut with a saw, were inclined 45' from the horizontal. The line of intersection between the planes of the vertical and subvertical fractures was parallel to the circular faces of the cores in all cases except one, as depicted by VF3HF-2 in Fig. 1. Fracture geometry of the other cores is also given in Fig. 1. Tables 1 and 2 give the physical properties of the solid and fractured cores, respectively. The suffixes and prefixes shown for each core have been used throughout the paper so that the reader may discern the fracture geometry from the core numbers.

The TTT curves of 0.1 pct C, 13 pct Cr steels containing up to 12 pct Co have been determined in order to establish whether the effect of cobalt is similar to that observed m plain carbon steels. It is shown that cobalt increases the incubation time and decreases the transformation rate, though not in an uniform way. The bainitic transfornation is displaced to lower temperature and overlaps partially the martensitic zone. ThE effect of cobalt on the transformation of a plain carbon austenite has been studied by many investi-gators.'-3 It was shown that cobalt displaces the TTT curves to shorter times and diminishes the harden-ability. The interpretations given for this effect of cobalt are conflicting. According to E. Houdremont,4 cobalt increases the transformation rate of austenite because it increases the diffusion of carbon as shown in the experiments of E. Houdremont and H.Schrader,' R.Smoluchowski,5 and M. Blanter.6 On the other hand, M. Hawites and R. Mehl3 deny on the basis of their own experiments any effect of cobalt on the diffusion of carbon and they assume that an explanation should be found in an eventual effect of cobalt on the mechanism of nucleation and growth of pearlite. W. C. Hagel, G. M. Pound, and R. F. Mehl7 have shown by calorimetric measurements that cobalt increases the free energy of the austenite-pearlite transformation in an eutectoid steel and this result explains qualitatively the observed effect of cobalt on the rate of nucleation and growth of pearlite. THE Colorado Plateau uranium province is in a mining boom rivaling the most colorful days of the early West. The application of scientific skills and the use of modern and novel mechanical equipment, however, is unique. No metal has ever received such concentrated effort from geologists and mining engineers. Moreover, no other metal has had the variety of tools available for finding and mining ores. Radiation detection equipment, bull- dozers, truck-mounted wagon and core drills, jeeps, airplanes, helicopters, tractor loaders, self -propelled 3-wheeled dump cars, front-end loaders and fleets of modern trucks are some of the present-day tools of the uranium prospector and miner. Because uranium is so vital to our national defense, the Atomic Energy Commission has offered many incentives for its mining. Through a series of circulars, the AEC has established base price schedules and various incentive payments. The incentive payments for acceptable ores from domestic mines are: (1) a guaranteed base price of $3.50 per Ib for ores assaying 0.20 pct U3O8 and more; (2) premiums based on grades above 0.20 pct U3O8 as for example, ores assaying above 0.50 pct U3O8 receive $1.00 per lb premium; (3) a development allowance of 506 per Ib of U3O8 contained in ores assaying over 0.10 pct U3O8 (4) an ore haulage allowance of 64 a ton mile for a maximum of 100 miles; and (5) an initial production bonus which may amount to as much as $35,000 in addition to all other payments. The producers have been guaranteed this policy until Feb. 28, 1957. The other four will continue until April 1962.

THE ECONOMIC THEORY It will assist in the understanding of the Resource Rent Tax ("RRT") proposals in Australia if the economic theory behind the tax is briefly explained. The idea goes back to the concept of rent put forward by the nineteenth century economist David Ricardo. His analysis was broadly as follows: A tenant who farms land which is just on the margin of economic viability cannot afford to pay his landlord any rent, because the value of the crop produced by such marginal land is equal to the cost of producing the crop, plus the cost of keeping the tenant alive. There is nothing left out of which to pay rent to landlord. A tenant who farms good land can afford to pay his landlord rent -- but the maximum amount of rent that he can be asked to pay is the excess of the value of the crop produced by the good land over the cost of producing the crop and of keeping the tenant alive. Adapting this theory to the taxation of mining projects, modern economists who favour this system of taxation say that a profitable mining (or resource) project produces rent in the Ricardian sense. The amount of the rent is the excess of the profits by the project over the amount of profit which is required to attract the taxpayer to invest in the project in the first place. This explains why the tax is called "Resource Rent Tax". PAPUA NEW GUINEA PRECEDENT Although Papua New Guinea ("PNG") is now independent of Australia, there are still close links between the two countries, and strong similarities between their respective tax regimes. PNG introduced an Additional Profits Tax ("APT") in 1978. In many respects, Australia's RRT proposals follow the precedent set by PNG1s APT. However, in practical terms, not a great deal can be learned at this stage from PNG's experiences since, according to the writer's understanding, no PNG mining project has yet paid any APT. The Bougainville mine is not liable to APT, being subject to tax under its own separate Act, which contains a different formula. Outline of PNG Additional Profits Tax. PNG has two versions of Additional Profits Tax ("APT) - one applying to general mining, the other to petroleum mining. The two versions are very similar. The general mining version is described below. The tax applies on a licence by licence basis. This means that losses on Licence A cannot be offset against profits on Licence B. Expenditure relating to two or more licences, is apportioned "in such manner as the Chief Controller thinks reasonable". Tax is levied on the "accumulated value of net cash receipts" at the rate of (70 - n)% where n=the rate of income tax. The accumulated value of net cash receipts ("av") is calculated as follows: Calculations commence from the first year in which substantial expenditure was incurred on the construction of facilities for the carrying out of mining operations on the licence. For that year the av consists of the total allowable expenditure to date on that lease. For the second year, the av is the av at the end of year one indexed in accordance with the statutory formula set out below, plus the total allowable expenditure in year 2. For year 3, the av is the av at the end of year 2 adjusted by the index factors, plus the total allowable expenditure in year 3. This process is repeated year after year. When the licence starts to earn revenue, the revenue is deducted from total allowable expenditure for that year. If revenue exceeds total allowable

Both a graphical and an analytical technique are presented for calculating stream compositions and temperatures in adiabatic staged systems in which solids travel countercurrently to a gas stream. Such a system might be a tower containing several plates, on each of which the descending solid is fluidized by the rising gas stream. Examples are presented in which chemical reactions occur, including the oxidation of SO, by a solid catalyst and the gaseous reduction of iron oxides. COUNTERCURRENT staged processes involving reactions between solid and gas streams are becoming more common. These operations are generally carried out in a series of beds of fluidized solids, with each bed or "plate" acting as a stage. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of such a series of stages located in a column, down through which a solids stream moves from stage to stage counter to a rising gas stream. Typical reactions carried out in such systems are the dehydration of aluminum trihydrate, the calcining of limestone, and the gaseous reduction of iron oxides. Calculation of the performance of these counter-current systems rapidly becomes more complex with increases in the number of stages and in the number of chemical reactions occurring. Calcula-tional procedures for isothermal operations of such systems have been described.4 Actual tower operations, however, are generally adiabatic, and in consequence far from isothermal. The object here is to present both graphical and analytical techniques applicable to such adiabatic towers operating continuously and in steady state. In this introductory discussion, the graphical techniques presented are of the McCabe-Thiele type, rather than of the Pon-chon type. In all the examples presented, it will be assumed that both thermal and chemical equilibrium are attained in each bed. The assumption that the gas and solid streams leaving each bed are at the same temperature as the bed is in accordance with the familiar behavior of actual fluidized solid systems. Chemical equilibrium, on the other hand, is not necessarily attained in any given stage between these two streams, even with deep beds, since reaction rates may be slow. In the last section of this paper, discussion is presented of methods suitable for use when chemical equilibrium is not attained. The adiabatic tower in Fig. 1 has "n" stages numbered from 1 to n, starting with the bottom stage as number 1. In analyzing this tower's performance, it is important to express gas flow rates in terms of a key component or element which remains completely within the gas stream throughout the tower. Similarly, solid flow is best expressed in terms of a key compound or element which remains within the solid phase throughout the tower. Thus, in burning limestone with a hot flue gas, the gas flow might be expressed as G, the pound mols of nitrogen flowing through the tower per unit time, while solid flow might be expressed as S, the pound atoms of calcium in all forms in the solid stream per unit of time. Defined in this way, both G and S are constant throughout the tower. The enthalpy of the gas and solid streams are now best expressed in terms of these key components. That is, the gas stream enthalpy H is expressed as Btu in the total gas per mol of the key component in the gas. Similarly, the solids stream enthalpy h is expressed as Btu in the total solid stream per pound mol (or pound atom) of the key component in this stream.

The trend toward utilization of low grade iron ores means that more efficient methods must be developed for their concentration. The collecting ability of fatty acids derived from fish oils has been extensively investigated by Cooke.' Tuna oil, a byproduct of the tuna canning industry, is one of the lower priced fish oils. Utilization of tuna oil fatty acids as collectors in the flotation of iron ore might be economically feasible under certain market conditions, especially if their efficiency were high. Crude or unfractionated tuna oil fatty acids, and five fractions derived therefrom, were tested for their ability to concentrate a commercial specularite ore from northern Michigan. A commercial fatty acid derived from tall oil, and commonly used in nonsulfide flotation, was used as a reference. The crude fatty acids were obtained by simple saponification of tuna oil. Fractions A and B were obtained by acetone precipitation of the crude acids at -5O and -2S°C, respectively. Fraction C was obtained by a partial fractional distillation at 12S°C and at a pressure of 3y in a centrifugal molecular still in order to remove the shortest and longest chain fatty acids of tuna oil as well as oxidation products present in the original mixture. Fractions D and E were prepared by a chilling process in order to precipitate the unwanted saturated fatty acids. Yields and iodine values of the materials used are listed below: The seven samples were used as collectors in a laboratory procedure patterned after the commercial process for flotation of Michigan specularite ore. Mineral deposits of western Utah and eastern and central Nevada have produced in excess of $8,500,000,000 since 1871. Through 1965, Bingham Canyon had produced over $4,600,000,000 and seven other camps over $100,000,000 each, principally from base metals. In addition, they yield iron and uranium ores; contain the world's largest beryllium reserves; and have produced the United States' most important gold discovery in 25 years. The area is famous for its silver production and its bonanza-type precious metal deposits, but such production has become unimportant. The area's greatest producers of metallic wealth are base-metal deposits in limestones and porphyry-type copper ores. In contrast to silver's decline, gold production has been rising-the result of by-product operations at Bingham Canyon. The area also contains gold deposits in which the gold is so finely disseminated it is not recoverable by panning. The area's gold ores frequently are associated with realgar, cinnabar, and carbon. The ore deposits generally are attributed to Tertiary intrusives,* but, at Mountain City, they may be related to Paleozoic volcanism. Mountain City has yielded rich chalcocite from quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite bodies in siliceous sediments. Regional stratigraphy and structure are difficult to interpret, 69 per cent of the area being obscured by alluvium or volcanics. In general, central Nevada consists of chert, shale, silty sandstones, lavas, and pyroclastics; eastern Nevada and western Utah of many alternations of limestone, shale, and sandstone. Central Nevada has been structurally active since late Devonian. Although granitic stocks may have intruded eastern Nevada and western Utah prior to the Cretaceous, these areas remained quite stable until affected by the Laramide Revolution. Precambrian exposures, occupying 3 per cent of the area, have not been important hosts. However, the question is raised as to whether Precambrian carbonates, properly situated with respect to invading mineralizers, might yet prove to be important. This paper describes 16 precious metal camps, 6 limestone replacement districts, 2 silver-base metal vein deposits, and 9 miscellaneous types and discusses briefly the 11 * Some ores, as at Ely, are associated with intrusives of. Cretaceous age. major camps that are described in detail in this Volume.

In 1928 Elam,1 discussing the subject of twinning in metals, disclosed that she had observed this phenomenon in aluminum, a metal little susceptible to twinning. The twinning described was one in which the boundary between the twinned portions was not a geometric plane but appeared, in one section, more like a normal grain boundary. Under these circumstances twinning might remain unrecognized by an observer of microscopic sections. She therefore suggested that twinning in aluminum might be much more prevalent than expected. Whereas the parallel composition lines shown in sections of polysynthetic twins were characteristic of the phenomenon of twinning, Elam pointed out that from the absence of

Availability of large-scale high field/high gradient magnetic separators during the past five years allows applications of magnetic separation to feebly paramagnetic materials which have been considered nonmagnetic in the past. Technology is now available for magnetically attracting not only feebly magnetic compounds of iron such as hematite and pyrite, but also hundreds of compounds of nonferromagnetic elements such as copper, tin, uranium, vanadium. Besides enabling novel separation of industrial minerals, metallic ores, and coal, the new technology also can be used in effluent treatment, catalyst cleanup, and purification of chemicals.

The elastic anisotropy factors, c4,/c6,, c3,/cll, and c12/cl,, for hcp metal crystals vary significantly among the dgferent unalloyed metals. Significant variations with temperature are also found. The effects of elastic anisotropy on the dislocation in an elastic continuum with hexagonal symmetry have been investigated by computing the elasticity factors for the self-energies of dislocations in fourteen different metals at various temperatures where the elastic moduli have been reported. For most of the metals the effects of the orientation of the Burgers vector, dislocation line, and glide plane are small and isotropic conditions can be assumed without significant error. Significant effects of anisotropy are, however, found in Cd, Zn, Co, Tl, Ti, and Zr. The elasticity factors have been applied in the calculations of dislocation line tensions, the repulsive forces between partial dislocations, and the Peierls-Nabarro dislocation widths. It is predicted that the increase in elastic anisotropy with temperature in titanium and zirconium makes edge dislocations with (a), (a + c), and (c) Burgers vectors unstable in basal, pyramidal, and prism planes, respectively. The probability of stacking faults forming by dissociation of Shockley partials in basal planes also decreases with increasing c4,/c6, ratio, when the stacking fault energy is greater than 50 ergs per sq cm. The widths of screw dislocations with b = (a) in titanium and zirconium increase very significantly in prism planes and decrease in basal planes as c4,/c6, increases. The effects of elastic anisotropy on various dislocation properties in cubic crystals have received considerable attention during the past few years. In the case of cubic symmetry the departure from isotropic elasticity depends entirely on the shear modulus ratio, A = 2c4,/(cl, —c12); i.e., the medium is elastically isotropic when A = 1. Foreman1 showed that an increase in the ratio A produces a systematic lowering of the dislocation self-energy for a given orientation and Poisson's ratio. ~eutonico~, has shown that large anisotropy can have a marked effect on the formation of stacking faults by the splitting of glissile dislocations in (111) planes of fcc and (112) planes of bcc crystals. ~iteK' made similar calculations for (110) planes of bcc metals. Both studies of bcc metals showed that the large A values encountered in the alkali metals tend to reduce the repulsive forces between Shockley partial dislocations. In fcc metals, however, A does not vary over the large range encountered in bcc metals; consequently, the effect of A on the forces between Shockley partials is masked somewhat by the differences in Poisson's ratio between metals. The effect of A on the line tension of a bowed out pinned dislocation has also been investigated for cubic crystals, first by dewit and Koehler5 and more recent- ly by Head.6 In both cases the line energy model is applied and the core energy is not taken into account, thus making the conclusions somewhat tenuous with regard to the physical interpretation. Nevertheless, the fact that a large A decreases the effective line tension is clearly evident and the tendency for large A to produce conditions that make a straight dislocation unstable (negative line tensions) also seem evident. Head, in fact, shows visual microscopic evidence that stable V-shaped dislocations occur in 0 brasse6 For hcp metals the definition of elastic anisotropy is more complex and, furthermore, significant deviations from an isotropic continuum are found among a number of real hcp metals, especially at higher temperatures. The present work was carried out to survey the effects of elastic anisotropy on the elasticity factors, K, that enter into the calculations of the stress fields around a dislocation core. Some isolated analytical calculations have previously been carried out for several hcp metals but they are restricted in the dislocation orientations and temperature.8'9 The present computations are based on single-crystal elastic moduli that have appeared in the literature and consider various orientations requiring numerical computations. The results are then applied to survey the effects of temperature on the dislocation line tension and dislocation splitting in hcp metals. PROCEDURE Anisotropy Factors. The degree of elastic anisotropy in hcp crystals cannot be described by a single parameter, such as the A ratio in cubic crystals. The following three ratios must be simultaneously equal to unity in order to have an elastically isotropic hexagonal crystal: The magnitudes of these ratios at several temperatures, as computed from the existing data for the elastic moduli of unalloyed hcp metals, are given in Table I. There are no cases of complete elastic isotropy, but the large anisotropy ratios encountered in the cubic alkali metals are also missing. There are, however, several significant differences among the hcp metals, the most notable being the relatively small A and B ratios in zinc and cadmium and the differences in the magnitudes and temperature dependences of A. It has been noted that the temperature dependence of A has a consistent relationship to the occurrence of the hcp — bcc tran~formation. For cadmium, zinc, magnesium, rhenium, and ruthenium, A is less than unity at 4'~ and, with exception for rhenium, decreases with increasing temperature. In the case of rhenium, A has essentially no temperature dependence between 923' and 1123"~, so that it is clear that A does not approach unity at higher temperatures. Mr. Chairman and Gentlemen: I accepted your Chairman's invitation to speak to a group of experts in this field with the greatest hesitation, because I know little or nothing about it. Certainly I can make no detailed suggestions, or suggest planning along very definite lines. You cannot do that sort of thing in a vacuum, and as I have suggested, my knowledge of the whole oil problem is next to nothing. It is possible that as a student of our public law, constitutional law particularly, for a number of years, I have acquired a perspective that may enable me to offer, for what they are worth, some general thoughts on these problems. I think that nothing in the whole field of law requires more definitely and clearly the functional approach than does the problem of a sound legal solution of the difficulties of the oil and gas industry. The industry is dealing with substances that are peculiar, and one must know how those substances act and what has been the history of the industry, to undertake to make anything like specific suggestions. I certainly am not qualified.

The classical explanation for formation of the fine equiaxed "chill zone " in ingot solidification is that local supercooling near the chill wall causes copious nucleation in this region. This work indicates, however, that convection is an essential element in formation of the chill zone. In the absence of convection, no chill zone forms even though rate of. heat extraction is extremely vapid. Alloy studied was Al-l.5 pct Cu alloy solidified against a copper chill wall. When solidification was initiated at the chill wall in absence of. cor-vection, surface grain size was large (>I cm diam). When it was initiated in the presence of convection, it was fine (<0.05 cm diam). It is concluded that some form of "crystal multiplication" plays an important role in formation of the chill zone. INGOT macrostructures are generally classed as containing one or more of the three zones: "chill zone", "columnar zone", and central "equiaxed zone". These three zones are sketched in Fig. 1; their origin has been discussed in some detail.&apos;-&apos; The classical explanation for formation of the chill zone is that supercooling occurs in the region of liquid metal adjacent the mold wall, and copious nu-cleation then takes place in this region forming numerous small crystals. The columnar region then results by growth of favorably oriented grains (den-drites) which crowd out their less favorably oriented neighbors."5 The mechanism of the columnar-equiaxed transition has been the subject of considerable interest. The generally accepted mechanism, until recently, was that constitutional supercooling developed in front of the growing columnar grains with eventual nucleation of new, equiaxed, grains ahead of the growing solid front.&apos; Recently, it became evident this explanation was not completely satisfactory and it is now evident that "crystal multiplication" plays an important role. This crystal multiplication occurs by separation of dendrite arms from growing dendrites,8?"&apos; and has been shown to be strongly influenced by convection.6, 10-13 Reduced convection results, for a given alloy, in longer columnar zone, larger columnar grains, and larger equiaxed grains.7, 12

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. &apos;An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) is a new system of tools providing an original approach in drill-stem testing. It improves control during the testing operation and gives a more accurate evaluation of the fluid recovered while providing additional pressure information for reservoir analysis. The tools are operated entirely by up and down motion of the drill stem. This up and down operation provides a positive means of control and offers easily observed surface indications of tool operating position. An unlimited number of shut-in and flow periods may be taken with this tool while in the hole. The key to the success of the MFE system of tools is the safety seal packer. Until this development, operation of the tools by up and down motion only had proven unreliable. The success ratio of the MFE now exceeds the ratio achieved by conventional tools. The equipment includes a 2,750-cc chamber in which a representative sample of the flowing formation fluid is trapped at the end of the last flow period and brought to the surface under pressure. The sample can be evaluated at the wellsite or transferred under pressure for laboratory analysis. The sampling feature of the tool allows a sample to be obtained from a reservoir which has suffered minimum influence from production. A representative sample can be obtained for laboratory or empirical analysis by employing a testing technique to minimize drawdown during flow periods. Interpretation methods to take advantage of this additional information are presented and supported by actual field examples. INTRODUCTlON The Multi-Flow Evaluator (MFE) represents the most recent technical advance in formation testing. Drill-stem testing techniques prior to the MFE have been limited in three areas—(1) operaiion, (2) recovery analysis, and (3) reservoir analysis. The tools in the MFE system allow maximum control during testing and provide test information superior to that obtainable with conventional tools. In the United States, fully 98 per cent. of the anthracite and bituminous coal tonnage obtained from underground operations is mined by the room-and-pillar system. Under this system, the total cost of the coal f. o. b. railroad cars contains as its greatest single item the money paid for "labor." Each labor dollar in an average bituminous mine may be subdivided into 85 c. paid for work done inby the gathering turnouts (including all work at the face), and 15 c. outby that point (including all work in and under the tipple). In an average anthracite mine, the corresponding figures are 70 c. and 30 c., the larger breaker force accounting mainly for the difference between these and the bituminous figures. The next largest single item after "labor" is usually "supplies and power;" and a division of this item inby and outby the gathering turnouts shows somewhat the same relative proportions as has been noted under the case of "labor". During the past 10 years, the chief advances made in the coal industry have been to obtain economies through complete mechanization covering that portion of the work which lies outby the gathering turnouts. These results have been accomplished by applying scientific principles to railroad yard layout, to cleaning and sizing machinery, to dumping facilities, to roller-bearing haulage equipment, and to heavy-rail, well-ballasted trackage. But these improvements, while gratifying in their resulting economies, apply only to 15 to 30 per cent. of the important cost items. Obviously, then, the big problem before the engineers of the coal industry today has to do with the methods of mining and the layout inby the gathering turnouts. Four years ago, Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., determined to have an exhaustive study made of the conditions which must be met in order to gain complete face mechanization, and in order that such a mining layout would be based on correct underlying principles. The result of that study, which was made by the writer, led to the adoption of a method of longwall mining wherein the roof is worked on the caving system and is supported as an overhang along the face by steel jacks.
