This account of a contrivance which has been found serviceable in practice may be of interest to engineers, and especially to those engaged in hydraulic mining. In that process, one feature which seems at first sight to possess little significance, is highly important in its effects—namely, the regular supply of water to the " giants." The chief condition of this regularity is an even flow in the pipe-line from the penstock to the nozzle.' This, of course, requires that the penstock be kept full. Any considerable surplus of water, overflowing at the penstock, is a simple waste, unless it be otherwise utilized in the sluices. At all events, it does not affect the delivery of the nozzles. But a deficiency at the penstock may admit air into the pipe; and this may produce hydraulic recoil, injuring the line by incessant vibrations, giving rise to leaks, and even to blow-outs, and (when a partial vacuum exists at the time of the fracture) the collapse of the pipe. An accident of this sort in our main pipe-line, occasioned partly by a settling of the ground and partly by the presence of air in the pipe, led to the employment of the device here described. The line referred to is made of 30-in. pipe, successively reduced to 18 and 15 in. in diameter, for the supply of two giants. By reason of the causes above mentioned, the 30-in. pipe burst more than 1,400 ft. from the penstock, and, despite the air-valve, the 30-in. pipe was collapsed to such a degree that one length of it, next to the penstock, was squeezed together and positively swallowed by the main pipe, through which it traveled for 750 ft., piercing through a short elbow on the way. This remarkable result was undoubtedly the effect of the vacuum suddenly produced when the pipe burst.

The introduction of the scintillation counter into field use for gamma-ray well logging has provided a new tool with special utility for the deternzination of natural radioactivity of sediments. Previous subsurface gamma-ray measurements have indicated only the total amount of radioactivity of the sediments. With the scintillation counter, the relative amounts of the elements which emit gamma radiation can be determined. Sediments logged included 35 zones in wells located in the Teras Gulf Coast, East Texas, and West Teras. Although the data obtained from measurements made to date are not sufficient to evaluate the possibilities of spectral logging, it appears likely that spectral measurements will yield information of geologic value. INTRODUCTION Although variations in the natural radioactivity of sediments were recognized as early as 1909,1 the appli- cation of such variations to borehole logging was not made until almost 30 years later. A group of Russian workers in the early 1930's were successful in making crude measurements of natural gamma activity in an oil well borehole. The first practical gamma-ray logging system was developed by Howell and Frosch2 in 1939. Induced radioactivity, or neutron, logging appeared soon after the introduction of gamma-ray logging. After early work had demonstrated the potentialities of radioactivity logging, development of sensitive and stable logging equipment for field use followed, so that neutron and natural gamma logs are now run routinely and have proved to be extremely valuable in characterizing subsurface formations. Even though tremendous strides have been made in developing radioactivity logging, it is apparent that the ultimate in the method of logging has not been reached, for, until very recently1 in none of the commercially available logging systems has advantage been taken of the fact that gamma radiation is composed of a spectrum of rays, each ray having a distinct and characteristic energy. An individual gamma ray originates in a single element and has energy determined by the element. The inten- sity of radiation, or number of rays emitted from unit volume in unit time, is determined by the concentration of the element. If it were possible to sort out these gamma rays and assign them to their parent elements, thereby essentially analyzing for the elements, a wealth of new information descriptive of formation material and fluid content would be at hand. For example, if in natural gamma logging, the gammas due to potassium and to the thorium and uranium series were measured individually, data would thus be available on the concentrations of each of the three elements, adding materially to the information content of the log. In contrast, conventional gamma logs measure only a quantity proportional to the combined concentrations of uranium, thorium, and potassium. The naturally radioactive elements occur in sediments in concentrations dependent on source material of the sediment, and through their chemical characteristics, on conditions of deposition,' so that the individual concentrations may be diagnostic for particular formations. These concentrations, particularly if measured in situ, could lead to a powerful tool for correlation and for reflecting environmental conditions under which sedimentation took place. In the brown rock phosphate fields of Tennessee there are large deposits of phosphate matrix in which quartz is a major constituent of the gangue, and which cannot be beneficiated by the conventional washing process to yield a concentrate of suitable grade for use in the electric furnace. A huge tonnage of high-grade phosphate concentrate is produced in the Florida pebble district from low-grade siliceous feed. However, the characteristics of the low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore are such that flotation under the conditions employed in treating the Florida ore1,2 results in inadequate beneficiation. Investigation of Flotation Methods Flotation has been used in 'Tennessee primarily to produce a concentrate of premium grade by moderate enrichment of a marketable grade of phosphate. 3,4 A secondary use was to increase the recovery of phosphate from the fines (down to approximately 200 mesh) from medium-grade ores with a concomitant moderate increase in over all grade.3,5 It was considered desirable to investigate methods of improving the grade of washed products from low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore when these products were substantially below the requirements for use in the electric furnace. The present paper describes the results of a laboratory-scale study of factors that affect the beneficiation of such siliceous phosphate ore by flotation. The primary objective of the investigation was to ascertain the conditions under which the ore could be made to yield a concentrate suitable for reduction in the electric furnace. It was assumed that a phosphate concentrate for electrothermal reduction should contain at least 26 pct P2O5 and should have a weight ratio of silica to lime of not more than 0.80. Since a concentrate of moderate grade can be used in the electric furnace, and since, as Grissom4 has shown in detail, the ore will not bear the cost of expensive treatment, the study of collectors was limited to the relatively inexpensive fatty acids. A secondary objective was to determine whether a portion of the phosphate could be recovered in a grade suitable for treatment with phosphoric acid to produce 45 pct superphosphate. The ore consisted of variably cemented sand interlayered with clay. The sand layers were composed of grains of quartz, phosphate, and clay embedded in a matrix of clay and phosphate. Some clay was finely disseminated in the phosphate grains. Little massive high-grade phosphate was present. The material used in the flotation tests was a washed sand that had been separated from the ore in a bowl classifier at the TVA phosphate-washing plant. The percentage composition of the sand was as follows: P2O5, 20; SiO2, 40; CaO, 29; Fe2O3, 2; Al2O3, 3; F, 2.3. The particle-

Top-slicing was introduced in the Pachuca district in 1917 by T. C. Baker, at that time mine superintendent of the Santa Gertmdis mine. There then existed 1200 ft. below the surface, lying between the fourteenth and eighteenth levels (a vertical distance of 354.2 ft.) a block of ore having a length of 295 ft. and an average width of 82 ft. and dipping at an angle of 65°. This block lay in the hanging wall of the vein and consisted of highly altered and fractured andesite, cut through with mineralized quartz stringers. On the foot-wall side, 26 ft. of old filling, left by former operators, was of payable grade. Stoping therein was first undertaken by the square-set filling system, but because of the extremely heavy hanging wall and loose dry filling in the foot wall, all square setting had to be accompanied by spiling, which made the operation exceedingly slow and costly. A system of mining was sought that would eliminate the difficulties inherent to the square-set system in heavy ground and that at the same time would effect the desired economies in mining. After several years, top-slicing has met all the conditions most satisfactorily, so that when similar conditions presented themselves in El Bordo mine, this method was adopted with necessary modifications. El Bordo mine is operated by the Santa Gertrudis company, and is situated about two miles north of Pachuca. Because of the diversity of the orebodies, a number of different mining methods are in use, among them top-slicing. Description of Block of Ore Former operators, when mining the original vein, left in the foot wall ore of too low grade to be profitable at the time; also, considerabe low-grade material was sorted out and stored as filling in the stopes. Some pillars were left in place, either for support or because they were not payable. All this has formed a body of ore that can now be exploited

It is the purpose of this paper to describe in detail the laboratory development and mill application of an unusual combination of flotation reagents employed in the concentrator of the Climax Molybdenum Co., on the Continental Divide, near Leadville, Lake County, Colorado. This development originated in an ore-dressing research laboratory maintained by Climax at the experimental plant of the Colorado School of Mines, which is staffed by men directly employed by the Climax Molybdenum Co. Mill-scale testing of laboratory developments was supervised by a representative from the testing laboratory, working in close cooperation with the operating staff at the mill. General milling practice at Climax is ably described in a paper by E. J. Duggan,1 mill superintendent. Other aspects of the Climax project have been described in papers by W. J. Coulter,2 by Butler, Vanderwilt and Henderson,= by Allen Kissock,4 and by Leo H. Glanville.5 Consequently, this paper will be corfined to the metallurgical aspects of recent reagent developments, avoiding, as much as possible, repetition of material covered in these earlier publications. Brief History of Reagent Practice at Climax Prior to the year 1937, the only reagents employed at Climax for froth production and collecting action in the flotation of molybdenite were steam-distilled or destructively distilled pine oils. The only exceptions to this practice were brief periods of mill testing, when reagents of various types were tried on an experimental basis. None of these experimental runs was sufficiently encouraging to justify its continuation as regular practice. Sodium cyanide has been employed since the very early days of milling at Climax as an inhibiting agent for control of pyrite and chalcopyrite. Alkaline reagents such as lime or soda ash have been used in recent years to minimize the detrimental effect of iron salts on flotation of molybdenite. The presence of these harmful salts is attributed to the decomposition of fine metallics abraded from liners and balls in the first stage of regrinding rougher concentrate. Flint pebbles are used in subsequent regrinding, since alkaline reagents are not entirely adequate to offset the inhibiting effect of iron salts as the grind becomes progressively finer and the grade of concentrate progressively higher. Climax metallurgists were familiar at an early date with the use of petroleum products such as kerosene and gas oil as promoters of flotation of molybdenite. Charles C. Oliver6 discussed the use of pine oil and kerosene as early as 19-20, in connection with the milling practice at Dominion Molybdenite Co., Quebec. Nevertheless, the early attempts to apply this knowledge in the Climax concentrator were complete failures. A first step towards using advanced control and optimization techniques at Kaiser Aluminum's Baton Rouge Plant has been the decision to utilize digital process control equipment exclusively throughout the plant. This paper describes the philosophy and strategy which has been used to successfully implement this program for both existing plant facilities and plant expansions. Some of the problems that have been encountered include system selection, vendor support, soft- ware development, system security and system reliability. How these problems arose, were overcome and how they can be prevented in future projects is discussed. A key element of the success has been the organization of the technical, engineering and maintenance efforts and also training has been found to be extremely important. Finally, the effect of these experiences upon present thinking is discussed.

ProbDly there has never been a year during which the petroleum industry expended so much effort as in 1929 in an attempt to rectify its ills. Eventually good will undoubtedly result, but as yet there have been no marked changes from the unhappy conditions familiar to all. Throughout the year remedies were sought that would cure the long-existing troubles of overproduction and waste. Proration of production and voluntary curtailment of output, for a short time considered the means for stability, not only failed but contributed to further waste and created a false sense of security. It encouraged a high rate of field development, weakened the economic structure by excessive development of newly discovered reserves and absorbed large sums of capital yielding meager or negative return. The manufacturing of gasoline by refiners without regard for market requirements furthered the unsatisfactory condition by falsely stimulating the demand for crude and placed on the market an oversupply of finished products, particularly gasoline. The marketing section of the industry has made progress by its adoption of the Code of Ethics as promulgated by the Federal Trade Commission and by the formation of an Export Association. The year 1929 opened not only with a current supply of oil exceeding demand but with an additional daily shut-in and potential supply variously estimated at from 3,000,000 to 5,000,000 bbl. This situation stimulated the industry, through the American Petroleum Institute, to attempt to work out an economically sound solution which would further conservation by bringing supply and demand into closer balance. Production Control After a thorough study of producing conditions, the committee of the American Petroleum Institute had for its recommendation that the production of crude oil in 1929 be held in check to an amount equal to that produced during the year 1928. The Federal Oil Conservation Board heard the appeal of the American Petroleum Institute and referred the matter to the Department of Justice. Section 317(e) of the Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 directed the Secretary of the Interior to prepare standards under which all working places in a mine shall be illuminated by permissible lighting while persons are working in such places. Section 317(e) further provides that such working places shall be illuminated within 18 months after such standards are promulgated. In accordance with this section of the Act, there was published in the Federal Register for December 91, 1970, a notice of proposed rulemaking which prescribed the illumination to be provided in the working places of underground coal mines. In light of written comments, suggestions, and objections to this proposed rulemaking, the proposedstandards were withdrawn and reproposed in the Federal Register for Wednesday, October 27,-19h. In light of further comments, suggestions, and objections, a public hearing was held on April 4, 1974, and standards were again reproposed and published in the Federal Register for April 1, 1976. Promulgation of the final lighting standards took place on October 1, 1976, which means that the underground coal mining industry must comply with face illumination requirements by April 1, 1978. As mentioned previously, the first proposed rulemaking for illumination of underground coal mines was published in the Federal Register on October 27. 1971. In early 1972, Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) and the United States Bureau of Mines agreed to a cooperative study of underground face illumination: Consol felt that expertise is this field would become increasingly important. Consol's initial efforts in illumination were aimed at investigating practical lighting systems for underground face equipment. We were concerned with installing unobtrusive lights which provided sufficient face illumination for safety, but at the same time were readily maintainable, electrically reliable, and physically sheltered from damage. We believe that our initial lighting systems did provide sufficient face lighting for safety, but because only prototype components were available for field testing, the resultant poor system reliability and maintainability necessitated drastic improvement before face lighting could become practical. Final Lighting Standards Deem Early Lighting Installations Out Of Compliance On April 1, 1976, the Federal Register contained the final version of the illumination standards (as they were later promulgated in October). When these illumination regulations and measurement techniques were defined and measuring instruments were available, Consol checked their lighting systems underground and determined that the systems were not in compliance with these final illumination standards. More Lighting Hardware Added In An Attempt To Achieve Compliance. After determining that all of our face lighting systems were not in compliance, we began adding additional lighting hardware in order to meet compliance with published regulations. Unfortunately, to date, we have not been able to meet compliance with practical lighting systems. We have determined from our field installations that the required additional lighting hardware, (to meet compliance) with its increased vulnerability and decreased reliability, renders the lighting systems impractical, if not impossible, to reasonably maintain. Our attempts to provide 0.06 footlamberts have also produced adverse operator reaction to the glare and to illumination systems in general. BCOA Members Ask MESA To Demonstrate Practicability Of Compliance With Regulations Industry concern about meeting the impending lighting regulations was mounting, and in May of 1976 a meeting between MESA and BCOA members was held to discuss lighting compliance problems. At this meeting, BCOA offered to work cooperatively with MESA in testing the practicability of various lighting systems mounted on underground mining equipment. Field tests were to be conducted by United States Steel Corporation, American Electric Power Service Corporation, and Consolidation Coal Company. The purpose of this underground field testing was to develop capability to provide adequate face illumination in a safe, workable manner which would not detract from efficiency of operation. BCOA members involved in this cooperative study were to submit necessary machine drawings, sketches, etc. to MESA in order that MESA could perform a "black-box" study and specify the type and location of luminaires to be installed on the test machines. MESA was confident that they could specify lighting systems that would be in compliance and would be practical so as not to detract from efficiency of operation. Consol was first to install lighting hardware under the BCOA/MESA cooperative agreement. As per MESA specifications, Control Products HgV luminaires were installed on a Joy 2BT-2H boring machine at the Williams Mine of Northern West Virginia Region. As of mid-October, 1976, Consol had approximately eight weeks operating experience with the lighting system on this boring machine underground and had drawn the following conclusions: The lighting system installed at Williams Mine (1) does not meet compliance with lighting standards as originally proposed by MESA, (2) does not provide illumination in a safe workable manner, and (3) will detract from efficiency of the mining operation due to operational delays. Although Consol has rearranged lights on this boring machine in an attempt to reduce operator objections, a practical lighting system which is "in compliance" has not been arrived at as of this writing.

One executive writing on capital equipment re- placement stated: "We keep extremely close watch over repair costs and when we reach the point of uneconomical operation, we replace the machine." This, of course, is most elementary, but a very basic premise. However, it seems advisable to set forth several equally obvious principles, so that all discussion will start from the same point. The subject is intended to deal with the point of uneconomical operation due to high operating costs in general and high repair costs in particular. This is not concerned with a similar problem of high costs because of an insufficient number of machines, be they trucks, shovels, or dozers.

IN applied mechanics and in metallurgy the transition from elastic to inelastic action is a matter of considerable interest and importance. Often the first inelastic deformation is apparently quite homogeneous; that is, uniformly distributed throughout the specimen. Sometimes this deformation is heterogeneous; that is, localized; inelastic deformation proceeds to some definite amount in restricted regions before adjacent regions of the specimen are inclastically deformed. In such cases the deformation does not become homogeneous until the whole specimen has been deformed the amount corresponding to that for each localized deformation. If the test is stopped before uniform extension sets in, the heterogeneous character of the deformation is apparent on the surface of the specimen through characteristic markings, which have been called "Lüders"' lines, "Hartmann's" lines, the "Piobert effect," or simply "flow figures." These markings are the source of considerable trouble in fabricating operations, particularly in the deep drawing of steel sheet. In many cases where the transition is of this nature, the stress developed at the upper limit of the elastic range is greater than the stress during the period of heterogeneous deformation, giving rise to the familiar "drop of the beam" effect in testing. The amount of the yield-point elongation, as well as the value of the stress at the lower yield point (the value to which the stress drops when yielding begins), are functions of the tempera-ture and the testing speed. Lower temperatures and faster rates of testing increase both the yield-point elongation and the yield-point stress. These matters have been ably discussed in a recent paper by Winlock and Leiter1 though, as brought out by the discussion of that paper, the phenomena are but little understood. The purpose of the present paper is to clarify the problem through the application of a simple principle, and to show that, through the application of this principle, a number of phenomena in the plastic deformation of metals become more read-ily understood.

RAPID colorimetric estimation of the amount of transparent minerals has been applied successfully to instream mill products at the cryolite flotation plant of the Pennsylvania Salt Mfg. Co., Na-trona, Pa. Apparatus used was a Bausch & Lomb monochromatic colorimeter. The optical assembly of the colorimeter, shown in Fig. 1, passes light from a 6-v, 32-cp, prefocus incandescent lamp through two condensing lenses, a heat-absorbing filter, an aperture-control diaphragm, an interference filter, and a sample container. The light finally strikes a barrier-layer photocell and the output current of the photocell is measured by a galvanometer. The engraved index line of the collective lens, located between the lamp and the galvanometer, is imaged upon the transmission scale of the colorimeter by the galvanometer mirror. Reflected light from the galvanometer mirror, the position of which is determined by the output current of the photocell, enables reading of percent transmission throughout the mineral sample being tested. Cutter roof failure is a specific type of ground control problem which frequently results in massive roof failure. It is a common occurrence in coal mines of the Northern Appalachian Coal Basin, causing delays in production and posing a safety hazard to mine personnel. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the causes of cutter roof failure to gain a basis from which to prevent its occurrence and to support such roof when failure does occur. Research conducted in a coal mine of central Pennsylvania has revealed a correlation between the occurrence of clastic dikes and formation of cutter roof failure. In-mine mapping of ground conditions showed an increase in roof failure in areas of high frequencies of clastic dikes. Rock pressure monitoring around clastic dikes registered the greatest amount of roof loading near the intersection of dikes with the rib. Load cells measuring horizontal pressure changes in the roof indicated that the greatest pressure changes were occurring perpendicular to entry headings when clastic dikes were present. Analysis of rock pressure monitoring shows that the roof behaved as two cantilever beams when severed by a clastic dike. Additional roof supports such as trusses and cribbing were found to effectively support the roof in areas of clastic dikes and prevent cutter roof failure. However, these methods were only successful when employed shortly after mining.

G. Ansell and J. Weertman (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Northwestern University, respectively) —The great increase in creep strength that you found in your indium-glass composites is quite striking. You ruled out a decrease in the dislocation source density as an explanation of the reduced creep rates. Could you tell in greater detail why you feel this is an inadequate explanation of the phenomenon. It appears to us that it is a reasonable one. Consider the spacing between the glass spheres in your composites. It is of the order of 10-3 cm. The spacing between dislocations in a (single-phase) annealed metal with a dislocation density of the order of 106 to 107 cm per cm3 also is of the order of 10-3 cm. Therefore it is not reasonable to expect that the arrangement of the dislocation lines is the same in the composite material as it is in pure indium. If the dislocation arrangements are different the density of the dislocation sources likewise will be different. Another way of saying the same thing is the following. The presence of the glass spheres reduces one of the dimensions of the metal phase to 10-3 cm. Thus the metal phase, in effect, is equivalent to a metal whisker or a thin metal film. These are strong because they have so few dislocation sources within them. T. D. Gulden and J. C. Shyne (authors' reply)—It is to be expected that the arrangement of dislocations in the indium-glass composites would be quite different than that observed in annealed pure metals. The dislocations probably exist primarily as segments connecting the dispersed particles. These segments and discontinuities at the very large area of particle-metal interface could act as dislocation sources. For this reason it was considered unlikely that the very high observed creep strengths were due to a low density of dislocation sources. A more likely explanation is that the distance a dislocation can glide is limited by the interparticle spacing. The particles averaged about twenty in diam and were less than 10 µ apart in the 40 pet composite. It seems reasonable to assume that a dislocation loop in a volume of metal surrounded by these relatively large particles would not bow out around them but would be restricted to the region between particles. A general expression for creep rate is given by the product of the dislocation source density, the average rate at which loops are generated from a source, and the average area swept out by a loop times the Burgers vector magnitude. Assuming that the area swept out is limited by the interparticle spacing and the rate of generation of loops is controlled by the rate of climb of loops over second-phase particles, as suggested by Ansel and Weert-men,9 a calculation of the dislocation source density may be made from the experimentally observed creep rates. The result comes out 10" to 10" per cm3 which seems reasonable in view of the assumptions involved. Thus it is concluded that the anomalously low creep rates that were observed were due not to a low dislocation source density but rather to a limitation on the area swept out by each dislocation loop.

There were 110 important discoveries of either oil or gas in Co1orado in 1935. There was, however, further development of the Price structure in southern Colorado and developments since the first of the year indicate. that an important oil field may be in the making. The discovery of oil in Price structure was made by the Oil City Petroleum Co. late ill Novem-ber, 1934, in its No. 2 Garnett in the northeast corner of lot 3 in the SW.¼ of sec. 25-33N.-2E. This well developed a good showing of oil in Dakota sand at 970 ft. The hole filled up 15 ft. with 40° gravity oil overnight and after standing for several days the oil level was 400 ft. higher. As a result of the discovery of oil by the No. 2 Garnett, three wells were drilled by the William E. Hughes Estate. Two of these wells had good showings of oil and may make good producers but it is doubtful whether they will produce the estimated capacity of 500 bbl. each with which they have been credited. Although the Hughes Estate wells have been completed for some time, they have not been given thorough production tests because of the isolated position of the field and lack of proper facilities. The. first well drilled by the Hughes Estate was located on the west side of the Navajo River on the downthrow side of a fault. It encoun-tered water ill the Dakota sand at 1285 ft, and was abandoned in green shales of the Morrison at 1405 ft. Well cuttings from the Dakota sand showed some evidence of once containing oil, so a 1ocation was selected for No. 2 Fee on the east side of the river and on the upthrow side of the fault. Oil was discovered in Dakota sands ill 1935 by Continental Oil Co. in its No. 3 Hoye, NW.NW.NE. of sec. 34-9N.-78W., on the South McCallum anticline in North Park, Jackson County, Colo., but on account of heavy flows of carbon dioxide gas under high pressure it has been impossible for the company to get an accurate gage of the oil production. The freezing action of expanding carbon dioxide makes the producing of the oil difficult and costly.

TEN years ago Taggart, Taylor and Ince1 described a workable, convenient apparatus for the measurement of contact angles between cleaved, ground or polished particles and captive bubbles. Wark and Cox2 and Wark and Sutherland3 have done an immense amount of experimental work with this apparatus. Their work has had as principal object the determination of "contact curves." Contact curves are cartesian charts in which pH (or some other variable) is plotted against quantity of modifying agent. The rectangular area is broken into two or more curvilinear areas separated by the contact curve. The curve indicates that a sharp demarcation exists between conditions that bring about sticking of particles to bubbles and conditions that do not produce sticking. The type curve appears in the TRANSACTIONS as Fig. 1, page 248, volume 112. Wark and Cox offer data to show that the contact angle has a value determined by and characteristic of the agent used. Wark and Cox also make the statement that they believe this value is independent of concentration (ref. 2a, p. 209). They say: It is suspected that, given sufficient time and provided that there are no disturbing factors, the full ethyl xanthate angle (corresponding to a complete xanthate film) would be obtained in every case where contact occurs. Such a conclusion, if correct, would tend to substantiate the hypothesis of flotation collection by metathesis championed by Taggart and his associates4-8 and would argue against the adsorption hypothesis now adopted by Wark7 and by one of us.8 However, the data of Wark and Cox do not bear out the conclusion that there is a sharp passage from conditions of contact to conditions of noncontact. Rather, they indicate the existence of a transition zone of reagent concentration across which the contact angle varies with changes in reagent concentration from zero to a value near the maximum. This may be seen, for example, from Fig. 195 in the new text by one of us (ref. 8, p. 380), which presents the data of Wark and Cox in graphical form. The object of this study has been to explore the nature of the transition from conditions of contact to conditions of noncontact. The data of Wark and Cox to which reference has been made as showing that a gradual transition exists are marred by the fact that the region of critical-agent concentration is at an extremely small concentration. This condition suggests that diffusion may have played such a preponderant role that equilibrium was not reached within the time alloted. In the Wark and Cox data, the critical concentration was at about one part of xanthate per million parts of water. To form a monolayer of xanthate on the mineral surface would therefore require depletion of xanthate in the liquid to a depth of the order of
