The oil industry in the Soviet Union closed the 1929-1930 operating year fulfilling its assigned program. During this period of time, however, no basic improvements were noted within the industry. A careful study of the conditions indicates that disorganization in most branches increased continually; that supply and transportation problems are approaching a state of breakdown; that labor problems become increasingly difficult and that the estimates for 1931-1933 period are too large. The production of all Russian fields increased by 27,200,000 bbl., as compared with the 1928-1929 operating year, while the next year's program anticipates a further increase of 46,000,000 bbl., and the 1933 plans call for an amazing total of 330,000,000 bbl., or over 150 per cent, more than the production of the operating year that has just closed. Table 1 shows petroleum production in Russia by individual areas and fields from 1916, and furnishes estimates for the three coming years, which constitute the balance of the Five-year plan. A brief analysis of Table 1 will show that the Soviet Planning Commission anticipates that the fully developed fields of the Apsheron-Baku will double their production by 1933, .as compared with 1929-1930, and that the old Grozny fields, which are already showing a tendency to decline, will increase their output from 44,110,000 bbl. in 1929-1930 to 68,000,000 bbl. in 1933. Furthermore, in 1933 new fields are slated to produce not less than 100,000,000 bbl., a figure which even under most favorable conditions in Russia would be hard to achieve. Of course, Russia could develop such production, because the country is not lacking in the prospective reserves, but the transportation in the country today (as in the past.) is in such poor shape that neither the supply of a gigantic oil industry nor the movement of its products is within the realm of possibility. Table 1 shows the future estimated crude oil production as required by the Five-year plan, and also as reasonably estimated by the author, taking into account natural declines in old fields, slow development of new areas and the deficiency of the transport. While in the 1929-1930 operating year only two major fields underproduced (Surakany and Maikop) and the plan was fulfilled to the extent of 97.4 per cent., the production of the last three months of 1930 ("Shock Quarter") indicated

Plating iron with copper has received great attention from practical and scientific men, but, aside from the deposit secured by immersion of iron in copper salts, by electro-plating, or by welding together thin sheets of iron and copper, these efforts have met with no success. Failure of these efforts, in the production of copper plating, has been due to the fact that the conditions normally and necessarily present in the plating operation are antagonistic to the production of copper-plated iron. In most, if not quite all of them, a bath of molten copper has been used. The temperature of a molten copper bath is so high that the iron becomes oxidized before it can be immersed in the molten copper, and unless a protective flux for the molten copper is used, the surface of the copper will become oxidized, and, in any event, the plated iron will oxidize immediately on its being withdrawn from the molten bath. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the works of The Metals Plating Co. at Elizabeth, N. J., where I witnessed the plating of iron sheets with copper by a new process.l The plating metal is applied to the sheet in the form of a liquid mixture by means of rolls, such as inking rolls. The sheet, after being coated with the mixture, is automatically carried forward and deposited on a link-belt conveyor, which carries it through a furnace maintained at a temperature well above that of molten copper. The basic principle involved in this method lies in the application of the plating metal to the sheet while the sheet is cold and then melting the metal in place on the sheet under conditions which are favorable to the formation of the plating. Plating Mixture The liquid plating mixture is composed of either copper oxide or finely divided copper, or a mixture of both, ground to the consistency of a light varnish in a crude oil having an asphaltic base, of a specific gravity of from 14" to 16' Be. THE success of a coal-mining venture as relates to operations at the gob or break-line, such as the drawing of pillars or the working of long-faces, depends upon the control of face conditions. The measures required to control the latter are dependent upon the action of the coal seam, roof and floor at and in the vicinity of the faces, but the manner in which these will act is dependent upon the rate of face movement as well as upon the face characteristics and upon the forces exerted. Yet the merits of a method of working-the practicability of controlling face conditions and the means required for such control when applied to any particular case-are usually judged only upon a consideration of the characteristics of coal seam, roof and floor, and the manner in which they have been observed to act. Practically every coal-mining man knows that face conditions are influenced by the rate of face movement, but few have appreciated that this is as much of a factor in the control of face conditions as are the face characteristics and the forces exerted. Fewer yet have recognized or taken advantage of faster rates of face movement as one of the principal means of establishing control of face conditions or of securing more favorable face conditions. Seemingly inherent difficulties, particularly in the control of roof conditions, but also in the control of conditions of the coal seam and floor, are frequently mitigated or disappear when the rate of movement of the faces is sufficiently increased. The characteristics of the coal seam, roof and floor and the forces exerted upon them do determine the general trend or tendency of face action, but the manner in which the coal seam, roof and floor will act and be acted upon and the magnitude of the action during the time the site of mining operations remains at any particular point is very largely determined by the rate of movement of the faces.

IN a previous report1 it was pointed out that a successful attack on roof troubles has to be preceded by extensive scouting. As Lord Kelvin once said, scientific progress can be made only if accurate data are available: "unless you measure, you do not know.? THE CONVERGENCE RECORDER For the observation of roof movements in mines the convergence recorder has shown that it will enable us to get some of the necessary information. Results with convergence recorders were first published by Winstanley and other English investigators for rapidly moving longwall faces. In their investigations the speed of work and the heavy over-burden produced a considerable amount of absolute values of convergence in a short time. Under the conditions frequently encountered in our investigations in Central Pennsylvania, under shallow, overburden and in mines with slowly proceeding extraction, the movements observed were much less in absolute value, for an equal interval of time. This was partly because the mines in which our studies were carried on frequently had idle days, sometimes four or five in succession. Therefore continuous records were not employed and a simple convergence gauge was built. In its first models, it consisted only of two telescoping tubes pressed against roof and floor by a coil spring. At the side of the lower tube a rule divided into 1/-mm. divisions was fixed and a knife-edge, which was attached to the upper tube, was slid over the scale in case of convergence between roof and floor. While the larger motions could be read on this device, it seemed to be desirable to increase the accuracy by inserting between the two tubes a dial meter reading in 1/1000 in. Such a gauge was first built in April 1937 and installed for experimental purposes in a bituminous coal mine in Pennsylvania (Fig. 1). It was read at least once daily, 24 hr. apart, and if feasible at shorter intervals. After several months of experience it can be said that this type of gauge answers the scientific as well as the practical needs. It is a well-established fact that some ores do not reduce as readily in the furnace as others, thus seriously affecting out-put, and consequently, cost of product. With the object of obtain ing some information upon this subject, the following experi ments were made in the laboratory of the Buffalo Furnace Company. Efforts were made to obtain, as nearly as possible, represent ative ores from some of the most important mining districts in the United States. During the last half century, much time has been devoted to investigations of the effect of nitrogen on the physical properties of steel, but in all discussions of results there is considerable doubt as to the accuracy and interpretation of analyses. No conclusions concerning the effects of nitrogen on the physical properties of steel can be more reliable than the methods used for determining the quantities of nitrogen present. The work described in this paper endeavors to establish some additional conditions required by the customary distillation method for reliable and nccurate determinations. Results by a combustion method of analysis for total nitrogen content are presented; these indicate that all of the nitrogen in steel, exclusive of that contained in blowholes, may be determined by the distillation method. Based on these more sound and more reliable analyses, results havc been obtained that bear on the following divisions of the general subject, nitrogen in steel: Nitrification of steel by melting in nitrogen, nitrification of steel by heating in ammonia, decomposition of nitrified steel by heating, and thermal analysis of nitrified steel. Consideration of Two Methods of Analysis and Some Results The details of the distillation and combustion methods are chemical in character and of little interest to most readers. They are therefore described in an appendix. The distillation method is essentially that described by Hurum and Fay1 and was generally used throughout this work. THE vapor phase deposition of molybdenum and tungsten from the hexacarbonyls has been thoroughly investigated by Lander and Germer1 and shown to yield well-bonded coatings on a variety of hot metallic surfaces. They also demonstrated that chromium coatings2.3 could be similarly deposited, but did not investigate this metal extensively. Recently,4 conditions have been described by which this compound can be prepared in quantities sufficient for laboratory scale plating experiments, and it is the purpose of the present communication to outline the results of preliminary experiments upon the plating of chromium from its carbonyl. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The apparatus used in these experiments is shown in Fig I. At one end, connected by a short length of rubber tubing, is a Cenco Hypervac 20 pumping continuously. At the opposite end is a needle valve which allows a small stream of purified hydrogen to flow through the apparatus. Connected in series are a trap T1, maintained at the temperature of dry ice and acetone, the plating chamber, and two traps T2 and T3 containing crystals of the carbonyl. T2 is kept in a constant temperature bath (not shown), while T3 is at room temperature. Stopcock S6 allows the hydrogen flow to by-pass the carbonyl traps. A McLeod gauge is connected so that it can measure the pressure at the pump through Ss, or the pressure at the plating chamber through S9 and S6. The standard (12 liter) volume connected by S5 is used to determine the volume included by S4, S6, Se, S10, the needle valve and the McLeod gauge. Knowledge of this volume allows calibration of the flow of hydrogen. The apparatus* is built entirely of pyrex, except for the needle valve, the rubber connection to the Hypervac, and the cover of the plating chamber. The plating chamber is water-jacketed, with a large brass top allowing insertion of the specimen to be plated. Set into the brass top is a ground glass stopper through which thermocouple leads are sealed. The thermocouple wires (pure Pt, and 87 pct Pt-13 pct Rh) serve the double purpose of measuring the specimen temperature and suspending it in the chamber. Surrounding the chamber is the coil of an induction heater, H. The apparatus is designed to allow variation of the following conditions: I, the specimen temperature, from room temperature to about 1000°C, 2, the carbonyl vapor pressure, from 40 to 220 microns, and 3, the hydrogen flow. IT is well known that the oxide of beryllium was identified as a new "earth" in 17971 and the metal first isolated in 18272. The history of the many difficulties encountered by early investigators, the laboratory achievements of Lebeau3, Fichter4 and Oesterheld5, and the eventual development of methods for commercial production are well covered in the literature, particularly in the authoritative published work of Siemens and Halske6 reviewing their comprehensive investigation of the element. Accordingly it has seemed desirable to restrict this paper to the properties and uses of beryllium and its alloys.

Park City, Utah, elevation 7200 ft., is on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Mountains about 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, elevation 4200 ft. The town and surrounding mining district are served by two railroads: one, 28 miles long, is a branch of the Union Pacific R. R. and joins the main line at Echo; the other, 35 miles long, connects with the main line of the Denver & Rio Grande R. R. at Salt Lake City. The main shaft and important mine buildings, elevation about 8200 ft., of the Silver King Coalition Mines Co. are 11/2 miles by road to the southwest of Park City, and are near the head of Woodside Gulch. The property of this company is a consolidation of several groups of mining claims, and comprises an area that is roughly 4 miles long by 1 mile wide, the long axis of which has a N. 55" E. bearing. Geology A general geologic section through the property shows a basal formation of gray quartzite, called the Weber quartzite, above which seems to lie conformably the Park City formation. Both beds are of Carboniferous age. The Park City strata consist of a number of beds of limestone, with intercalated beds of quartzite, sandstone, and shale. The exact thickness is difficult to determine, but is apparently between 650 and 850 ft. Above the Park City beds and conformable with them lie the Woodside Shales. These thinly bedded fine-grained shales, about 1000 ft. in the thickness, are of no economic importance. They are overlain conformably by the Thaynes formation, which has about the same thickness and is composed of beds of limestone, sandstone, and shale. A thin bed of shale divides the formation into an upper and a lower part; the upper part contains more lime than the lower part. The Woodside shales and the Thaynes formation are of Triassic age. All the beds dip northwest, the dip is usually from 20" to 30°, but may be as great as 40°. In places, intrusions of diorite porphyry have deformed the beds. THE Bureau of Mines has been charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from low-grade bauxite, alunite, and clay. As one part of the program, an investigation of the application of ore-dressing methods to improve the grade of high-silica bauxite is in progress at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. This paper summarizes data obtained so far and presents detailed results of tests on four typical samples. MINERALOGY OF BAUXITE The name bauxite originally was used to designate the dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2H20). The designation has been retained, although the existence of a specific mineral of such composition has been disproved. The term is now applied to ores of aluminum consisting of various mixtures of the minerals gibbsite (A1203.3H20), diaspore (A1203.H20), and boehmite (A1203.H20). The predominant hydrous aluminum oxide in most American bauxite, however, is gibbsite. In some instances bauxite may be amorphous mixtures of the hydrous aluminum oxides that approximate the composition of dihydrous aluminum oxide (A1203.2H20). The proposed name for this material is cliachite. Gibbsite and boehmite, the trihydrate and monohydrate, are soluble in a solution of sodium hydroxide at elevated temperature and pressure, whereas diaspore is practically insoluble. The solubility of these two minerals is the basis of the Bayer process of alumina extraction. All bauxites contain certain impurities, the commonest of which, in the order of their importance, are: silica, principally as a constituent of kaolinite, and to a lesser extent as quartz; iron, as hematite, limonite, and siderite; and titanium, as ilmenite, rutile and leucoxene. Minor impurities are zircon, cobalt and nickel. Bauxite is produced commercially in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee, but the most important deposits in the United States are in Arkansas, in the vicinity of Little Rock. HISTORY OF BAUXITE BENEFICIATION The literature on bauxite beneficiation is limited, but the reports of Gandrud and DeVaney1 and Clemmer, Clemmons, and Stacy2 show the possibilities of flotation as a means of beneficiating bauxite. COMPAÑIA Minera de Peñoles, S. A., at its Avalos unit operates a lead-zinc concentrator having a capacity of about 600 short tons per day. Lead and zinc concentrates are made by flotation methods. The concentrator is at Terminal de Providencia, in the state of Zacatecas, some 70 miles south of Saltillo, Coahuila. The Peñoles-Avalos railroad operating between the plant and Estacion Avalos, a distance of 6 miles, makes connections with the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad, which in turn connects with the Nacionales de Mexico at Saltillo. The three railroads are each of different gauge, requiring the transfer of all supplies and concentrates at each junction. The mill operates on company ores, on ores from leased mines, and as a custom mill. The custom business is very small. The lead concentrates are shipped to company smelters at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and Torreón, Coahuila. Since the European war, all zinc concentrates have been shipped to the United States. ORE TREATED The major source of ore supply is a group of four mines owned or leased by the company, some three miles south of the mill in the mountains, from which the ore is delivered to the mill by a gravity aerial tramway. Custom ore comes in by rail. The ores occur in chimneys. The upper levels contained oxidized siliceous ores of lead, copper, silver and gold, with varying amounts of zinc. These ores were direct-smelted. In the first two years of operation a good deal of the tailing loss was caused by the oxidized content of the ores milled. Much of the ore in the transition zones between the oxides and sulphides was not mined. The ores now being milled are clean, hard sulphides in a limestone gangue, with only occasional contamination of oxides. The lead and zinc sulphides are of coarse structure and are freed even above flotation sizes. The galena is usually "steel" colored, easily and quickly floated. When there is any oxidation, it is usually on the coarsest crystals. The zinc minerals vary a good deal in color; a resin sphalerite predominates but there are varying shades of brown marmatites. On an average, the zinc sulphides contain 64 per cent zinc. The only common copper mineral is chalcopyrite. Little is known of the occurrence of gold and silver. Waste minerals are mainly limestone and pyrite, both of which are barren. The ores vary from 20 to 35 per cent pyrite. When Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, no one knew what black powder was except the Chinese: they knew enough to make dazzling fireworks with it. But the realization that black powder could also do useful work came much later and, like all important discoveries, it altered the course of history. It was in the 14th century that black powder was first used to break rock in a very crude way: there were no drills and the powder was simply poured into cracks and exploded by setting it afire. Because its energy value was pretty low, the need for something more powerful was felt when the industrial revolution arrived.

S URFACE effects in the cleavage of brittle crystals have been known for some oftime,1, 2 but our knowledge of surface effects in the plastic deformation of crystals is of relatively recent origin. In 1936, Roscoe9 eported his observations comparing oxidized and clean cadmium crystals. He found that cadmium crystals 1/2 mm in diam when covered by an oxide film less than 1200 atoms thick had critical shear stresses about twice those for clean crystals. This effect is anomalous in that it cannot be caused by the inherent shear strength of a normal oxide film. Either an interaction between the film and the crystal causes the large increase in strength, or the oxide film has an abnormal mechanical strength. Several authors since Roscoe have studied surface effects in crystal plasticity. A complete review of the literature will not be presented, but most of the results may be summarized as follows: 1—The critical shear stress for slip is increased markedly by very thin oxide films on zinc4 and cadmium crystals;" ' also, the entire stress-strain curve is raised by an oxide coating;3,4 both effects increase with decreasing specimen radius. 2—Surface active substances such as oleic acid destroy the hardening effect of oxide films.4, 6-8 The time required for the reduction of the hardening effect to begin increases with the viscosity of the solvent4~ 3—There has been dispute in recent years about the effects of surface active substances themselves on plastic deformation. Rehbinder, Lichtmann, and Maslenikov9 state that surface active substances reduce the strength of metal monocrystals markedly and increase the number of slip lines per unit length at a given strain. The effect varies with orientation for tin crystals being smallest for x, = 0, largest for x, = 45", and intermediate as x, + 90°.10 Several workers claim to have disproved the results of Rehbinder')"." but Rehbinder and Lichtmann9 have defended themselves and Masing with his collaborators" has confirmed some of Rehbinder's results. 4—Immersion of metal specimens in electrolytes such as sodium chloride reduces their strength12,13' and subsequent cathodic polarization increases the strength reduction. For noble metals, the strength reduction occurs for both anodic and cathodic polarization," increasing with increasing polarizing voltage. 5—Electroplated copper coatings effect the creep rates of zinc monocrystals. Poly crystals are not affected." 6—Immersion in dilute acid destroys the hardening effect of an hydroxide film. When an acid solution is applied to a steadily creeping crystal, the creep rate jumps to a very high value and then drops gradually to a steady value which is higher than the initial steady rate.*' " If the hydroxide film to be removed is very thin (about 100A thick), the creep rate does not change measurably, but a small rapid strain-increment is observed when dilute acid is applied." 7—Crystal plasticity depends on specimen dimensions. This was observed by Lichtmann and Ven-stroml" for monocrystalline tin and by Andrade and Kennedy" for polycrystalline lead. 8—Immerson of copper crystals in mercury has no effect on their stress-strain curves.'" 9—Bombardment of creeping cadmium crystals with a particles which penetrate the surface to only 0.005 mm may increase their creep rates as much as five times.''' The experiments which will be described in this paper pertain to: (a) the effect of a crystal's shape on its plastic deformation, and (b) the effect of metallic surface films on plastic deformation. For the work pertaining to (a), crystals of zinc, tin, and lead were grown which had various shapes. These were tested in simple tension. Macroscopic rotations about the tension axis which are unpredicted by the classical theory of slip were observed, and serrated edges were observed in tin crystals. For the work pertaining to (b), the effects of evaporated and electrodeposited films of copper, nickel, gold, and zinc on the mechanical properties of zinc, tin, and lead crystals were determined. The films influenced both slip and twinning of the crystals in creep and tensile tests. Experimental Details Chemically pure zinc, tin, and lead were used in this investigation. (written discussion ?).-The effect of reducing gases on hot solid copper has been known for many years in the copper industry, and precautions taken to guard against it in the general practice in copper heating and annealing. In view of the statement that Bengough and Hill, in 1910, were the first to suggest the possibility of the formation of gas within the copper itself, it is interesting to note that in Harper's Magazine for April, 1904, an article, "Life and Diseases of Metals," by Professor Heyn, illustrated the effect of reducing gases on copper by a photograph, which is shown in Fig. 1. This he entitled "Copper burst asunder by disease." After referring to the effect of hydrogen on steel, he makes the following remark: "Similar symptoms of poisoning, caused by hydrogen or gases containing hydrogen (as gas for lighting purposes), are apparent in copper when exposed to red heat. Not every kind of .copper is susceptible to this poisoning in equal degree. Copper per-fectly free of cuprous oxide is entirely exempt from poisoning. Most of the various coppers of commerce, however, contain cuprous oxide, formed during the smelting process while exposed to atmospheric influences. In such coppers, containing cuprous oxide, hydrogen causes a terrible disease on the copper being heated red hot. The copper bursts asunder and is permeated by cracks. This disease is practically incurable and can be eradicated by resmelting only. The results work destructively according to the amount of cuprous oxide contained in the copper." It must have been evident to Professor Heyn, as it was to us on reading this article, that the bursting asunder of the copper was clue to the formation of steam. Practical copper heaters have known for many years that it was quite possible to produce blisters, or large gas holes, in the interior of copper plates or bars by heating to a high temperature in reducing gases. These facts, of course, do not detract from the value of the study of the action of hydrogen gas that has been made by Mr. Pilling, but simply illustrate that the practical effect of reducing gases on furnace-refined copper has long been a troublesome factor in the heating or annealing of that metal.
