IT is the object of this paper to oppose unnecessary changes, and the introduction of new and confusing terms. From the earliest times of which we have any record on the subject, iron has been divided into general classes. Whether iron was first known in the form of wrought iron or of steel, is a matter of no importance; but at the time when cast iron first became a prominent article of commerce, wrought iron and steel were old products¬steel, at that time, being generally made from wrought iron by the process of cementation. As steel was then properly defined as iron containing more carbon than wrought iron, so cast iron was appropriately defined as iron containing more carbon than steel. Until the year 1776, when Huntsman first began the manufacture of a new kind of iron by melting wrought iron and steel in crucibles, the above definitions were all that could be desired. At first, probably, owing to imperfect appliances, only a highly carburized iron was melted in crucibles, and this led to its being called cast steel. If our ancestors had found a name for this material not involving the use of the word steel, we would have been saved the trouble of the present discussion. As the arts developed, new uses were found for steel, and the products of the crucible were varied, until at the present day it is quite common to find steel containing no more carbon than average wrought iron, and other steel containing nearly or quite as much carbon as some cast iron. All of these various products of the crucible have retained, or received, the name cast steel, usually abbreviated to the simple word steel, without causing any confusion among producers or consumers in regard to terms or their meaning. In 1855, twenty-one years ago, the Bessemer process was introduced ; this was followed in a few years by the Siemens-Martin process, and the products of both were at once, and have ever since been, called steel, from the fact that they were identical in chemical and physical properties with crucible cast steel. At the present time, then, we have three subdivisions of cast steel, viz.: Crucible cast steel, Bessemer cast steel, and Siemens-Martin,

The predominant methods for mining coal in the USA are room and pillar and longwall. Approximately 95 percent of the coal is mined by room and pillar and 5 percent by longwall. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has an ongoing program to improve the rate, quality, and cost effectiveness of stabilizing the roof for both of these mining systems. In room and pillar mining, the installation of permanent roof support is often the task which paces the system operation, and it thus controls the level of production achieved during any mining shift. Two automatic roof bolt insertion equipment developments are discussed, as well as a flexible drill for operation in thinner seams. Progress will be reported on under- ground trials of a particular flexible drill which has been combined with a bolt inserter to form a compact, reliable module for retrofitting to continuous mining machines. In longwall mining, the use of hydraulic supports on the working face provides roof stability. The DOE has several trials ongoing with shield- type supports in difficult strata conditions which are described, as well as a co-funded project with the Bureau of Mines on a resin injection remedial method for consolidating a shear zone at one site. A project to improve the match of strata conditions to shield design is also described, which involves the use of a 1360 tonne vertical load mine roof simulator.

The term "modern automatic baghouses" as used in the title of this paper is intended to designate a general type of mechanical fume filter, introduced some 20 years ago and gradually improved since that time. It is characterized by its small filtering bags, enclosed in groups of 15 to 30 in steel compartments, and by its frequency of shaking, as compared to the old type of baghouse, which uses much larger bags, shaken at much longer intervals. Automatic baghouses are produced by a number of well-known manufacturers. Some recently constructed baghouses of the old type have embodied some of the principles of the automatic type, in that they are divided into several compartments, with separate fans for the different compartments, and flue headers arranged so that when the fan to any one compartment is shut down preparatory to shaking the bags in that compartment, the bags are put under suction by the draft from the other fans, thus making possible more efficient cleaning of the bags. These baghouses have motor-driven shaking mechanisms, and generally are operated under higher pressure and shaken at more frequent intervals than was the practice with the old style baghouse, and consequently have greater filtering capacity per unit of bag area. It is possible to interconnect the fan motors and the motors driving the bag-shaking mechanism, with suitable relays and timing devices, so that the operation of this type of baghouse also becomes to a considerable extent automatic. These baghouses are intermediate between the old style of baghouses, strictly speaking, and the completely automatic baghouses. They may he considered just as modern as the latter, and their proponents can no doubt cite many advantages for them. The authors are less familiar with them than with other types, and the following discussion will be limited to a comparison of the automatic baghouses and old style baghouses, with particular reference to the experience of The Eagle-Picher Lead Co. and The Eagle-Picher Mining and Smelting Company.

During the past eight years, in trying to estimate world consumption of petroleum and related products, the authors have been unable to account for all the supplies available in any one year. There has remained at all times a balance, which at first was thought to represent almost entirely additions to stocks in foreign countries. But as this discrepancy continued year after year-over 148,000,000 bbl. in 1937—it became unreasonable to conclude that corresponding additional foreign storage capacity was continuously being made available. It became therefore clear that the balance in question was due to other causes than to additions to stocks. Last year Mr. A. G. White, Chief Economist of the Petroleum Economics Division of the United States Bureau of Mines, pointed out to one of the authors that an unknown and important factor in consumption of petroleum and related products is to be found in the requirements for military purposes in foreign countries. This paper is the result of Mr. White's timely suggestion. There are no reliable data available either on the storage capacity, and therefore oil stocks, or on the petroleum consumption for military purposes in foreign countries. This information is so closely related to national defense that its divulgation is forbidden. One can therefore but surmise as to these facilities and needs in line with the relative strength of the military land, air and sea forces of the various countries. The authors have assumed many of the component factors that go to make the tables herein presented, such as fuel consumption of fighting ships in relation to tonnage and horsepower, gasoline consumption of air fleets in relation to number of planes, and the consumption of petroleum products by mechanized armies; but in making these assumptions they have availed themselves of the advice and counsel of those whose wide experience in these questions make their views authoritative. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER is to lay a foundation of elementary theory that might be useful in the discussions which it is hoped will be evoked during this Symposium. It is not my purpose to try to expound the details of the most complete theories as that would be impossible in the time at our disposal and, even if time were available, would probably be of less usefulness than a discussion of the principles underlying the advanced theoretical treatment. I shall try to discuss the fundamental bases for these advanced theories. There exists at the present time very much less need for a detailed description of complete theory than existed when this Symposium was being organized. The reason for this is that a series of papers by L. R. Underwood has been appearing in the magazine Sheet Metal Industries. It is understood that this series will he published soon in the form of a book. Dr. Underwood's articles are complete, critical and well written and it would be hopeless to try to do better in less space. The need, then, is for a brief treatment of basic theory. The objective of any theory of plastic forming- is to enable one to calculate the force and power requirements for the process, and where the deformation is not uniform, to calculate the distribution of strains- In the formed object. We need as the basis for the calculation the relationship between stress and strain in the metal, particularly for the combination of stresses imposed by the forming process. We need to know the stress-strain curve for some simple state of stress, and we need in addition some theory

Uranium of the Grants region occurs predominantly in continental sandstones of the upper part of the Jurassic Morrison Formation, but significant lesser deposits are found in limestone of the Jurassic Todilto Formation and in black shale of the Cretaceous Dakota Formation. The deposits are disseminations that form runs ranging from a few hundred tons to several million tons. The ore consists mainly of uraninite, uraniferous carbonaceous material, coffinite, and such secondary oxidized minerals at tyuyamunite, carnotite, and uranophane. In sandstone, the ore runs were locallized by mudstone, interstitial carbonaceous material, and primary sand channel trends. In limestone, ore deposition was related to folds and fracture zones. The great bulk of production has come from the Ambrosia Lake mines in the Grants district and the Jackpile and Paguate mines in the Laguna district. The ores, which generally have been 0.20 to 0.30 per cent U3O8, are treated at mills operated by Kerr-McGee Corporation, Homestake-Sapin Partners, and The Anaconda Company, all in the Grants district. In 14·years after discovery in 1950, the deposits had yielded concentrates valued in excess of $800,000,000. Since deposition of the Jurassic host rocks, a geologic history involving tilting, faulting, erosion, changing ground-water environments, and oxidation has considerably influenced the existence and character of the deposits. It is evident that their ongm is not simple. However, a degree of agreement appears probable for a pre-Dakota age for the original ore runs, and, at Ambrosia Lake, two principal stages of ore formation, separated by Laramide faulting, are recognized. All earlier ores have been modified by Quaternary oxidation, solution, and enrichment during which time much secondary tyuyamunite, metatyuyamunite, carnotite were formed.

This is the Centennial year of AIME and many of us reading this issue of ' will be getting ready to attend the Centennial Celebration in New York from February 26 through March 4. The officers of the Division sincerely hope that a large number of our members will attend the fine technical sessions and social functions arranged for this really big meeting. The year 1971 will be a crucial one for MBD. This SME Division is a working group organized "to furnish a medium of cooperation among those interested in the basic unit processes and unit operations of minerals beneficiation; and to promote the advancement of this branch of mineral technology through meetings for professional intercourse, and to stimulate the preparation, reading discussion and circulation of papers connected therewith." No one can deny the worthiness of these objectives or minimize the efforts that Division officers and members have made to attain them. Much has been done over the past several years to achieve a smooth-running and effective MBD organization. However, there is still room for improvement and much more needs to be done in order to provide the best possible services for the membership and the profession.

Describes important developments in, four counties, all of which brought in 40° oil. Indications are favorable for the future, although the daily production of the agate decreased 19,000 bbl. during the year 1923. THE state of Kansas had a daily average crude-oil production of about 87,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year. This showed a steady but consistent decline during the 12 months, so that the daily average production at the end of the year was slightly over 68,000 barrels. GREENWOOD COUNTY THE most active development in Kansas during the year was in Green-. wood County, in a line from near Sallyards in T 25-R 9 to east of Madison in T 22-R, 11. The main part of. this development has been in a succession of pools beginning at the south with the Polhamus pool in 34-24-9 and 3 and 4-25-9; Thrall pool in 28, 29, 32 and 33-23-10; Burkett pool in. 13, 23, 24 and 26-23-10; Seeley and Wick pool in 22, 27, 28, 32 and 33-22-11 and 5, 6, 7, and 8-23-11; Frohm pool in 11, 14 and 15-22-11; Madison pool in 31 and 32-21-12 and 6, 22, 12 and 1-22-11. Some of these pools, have two or more sands, locally called Bartlesville and Burgess Sands. They range in. depth from 1850 ft. near Madison to 2450 ft. near Sallyards, the general dip being to the west. The thickness of these sands runs from 20 to 100 ft., the initial production of the wells being 50 to 1000 bbl. of 40-gravity oil or better.

After a short historical background of the process evolution, this article descvibes present-day plant facilities and operating techniques utilized for high-purity bismuth production. The plant is one of the world's largest, with an annual output of some one million pounds of refined bismutlz. PREVIOUS papers1 written by staff members of Cerro de Pasco Corp. have referred briefly to the production of refined bismuth. Since the Corporation is one of the world's foremost producers of high-purity bismuth, a detailed description of the process for extracting the metal may be of general interest. Following a short historical background of the development of the actual process, this presentation will trace the progress of bismuth from its entry into the primary smelting circuits to its concentration in electrolytic lead cell slimes. Our facilities for the treatment of anode muds will be described and the extractive methods given in some detail, with particular emphasis on the techniques which result in the production of refined metal. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Shortly after Cerro de Pasco began smelting operations at Oroya, Peru in 1922, it became apparent that the dust carried by copper converter gas contained appreciable amounts of bismuth. Although dust collection efficiency was poor prior to building of the 550-ft stack and installation of the central cottrells in 1938, a large stock of dust was accumulated during the intervening years, having the following approximate composition: Oz. per ton Ag - 11.0 Pct Sn — 0.5 Pct Pb - 49.0 Pct Zn - 6.5 Pct Bi - 2.0 Pct Insol. - 1.5 Pct Cu - 0.7 Pct Fe - 2.3 Pct Sb - 3.0 Pct S - 10.0 Pct As - 7.5 In the mid-1920's, experimental crucible melts of this dust with carbon indicated that most of the bismuth and silver, and some of the lead, could be reduced to a fairly clean bullion. Other products were a small amount of leady copper matte and a slag high in zinc, arsenic, antimony, and lead; this slag contained some tin but only small quantities of silver, bismuth, and copper. After the laboratory results had been confirmed by operation of a small reverberatory, a dust reduction furnace was constructed. The ±10 pct Bi-Pb bullion produced from this operation was stocked until 1930, when an Oroya-designed converter type furnace3 was installed for the elimination of arsenic, antimony, and some lead from the bullion. This process concentrated the bismuth from 10 to about 60 pct. By means of the bismuth process developed4 by W. C. Smith at East Chicago (1909-1914) and the discovery of a method5 for separation of lead from bismuth with chlorine gas in 1929, it became possible to begin production of refined bismuth. Unfortunately, bismuth deleaded with chlorine always contained residual chlorides, and the removal of the chlorides by caustic soda left a lead content of 0.02 to 0.04 pct. This final problem was solved6 by substitution of air-blowing for the caustic treatment, which effectively removed all excess chlorine and gave bismuth which was practically lead-free. In 1934, a pilot electrolytic lead refinery began operations at Oroya. Lead smelting was resumed in 1935 and two years later a 100-ton-per-day lead refinery was put into service. In conjunction with the latter, the present-day Anode Residue Plant was constructed. Until 1940, the plant treated both lead anode slimes and dust reduction bullion. The dust reduction furnace was shut down in that year, and all cottrell dusts (with the exception of the product from the arsenic cottrell) were mixed with pyrite and treated in a Wedge roaster to eliminate all possible arsenic. Calcine from this operation joined the sinter plant feed; hence the bismuth from the copper and lead circuits was collected in the lead bullion and subsequently in lead anode slimes from the electrolytic lead refinery. The latter source has been the only bismuth-bearing material of any consequence entering the Anode Residue Plant from late 1940 to the present. A copper refinery began operating in 1948, and the cell mud from this plant is mixed with lead slimes and processed through the same circuit, though only a small quantity of bismuth is present in electrolytic copper cell residues. Sulfurization of copper oxides was investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). When mixtures of cuprous oxide and sulfur were heated, the surface of the cuprous oxide was converted to cupric sulfide at the melting point of sulfur (119°C); additional sulfuriza-tion took place when the sulfur vaporized above 200°C. Cupric oxide also reacted with sulfur to form cupric sulfide but the starting temperature was approximtely 225°C. When the cupric oxide and sulfur were physically separated, sulfurization still occurred indicating a reaction with the vapor phase of sulfur. Sulfurization was obtained in runs with cuprite, chrysocolla and basic copper carbonate. Further decomposition of cupric to cuprous sulfide was noted at somewhat higher temperatures. The DTA-TGA data made it possible to set up postulated reactions in each system. These techniques were found to be well suited for studies of this type. Because of the difficulty encountered in flotation of many metallic oxide minerals, efforts have been made to find suitable reagent combinations to sulfi-dize these minerals in the flotation circuit. Recently Bautista and Sollenberger,1 using a different approach, showed that the surfaces of many oxide minerals can be converted to sulfides by heating them with sulfur to temperatures between 150° and 225°C. This technique was effective even with chrysocolla, a mineral which is very difficult to sulfidize. The primary objective of the present study was to obtain information on the reactions between the oxide minerals and suIfur. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved might prove useful in pointing the way to improvements in the process. A secondary objective was to demonstrate the value of thermo-analysis in investigations of this type. Bollin and Kerr2 have reported the use of a modification of differential thermal analysis to study the thermal reactions which occur on heating elemental constituents in a closed system to synthesize copper sulfides and iron sulfides. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) was used to detect enthalpic changes as mixtures of minerals and sulfur were heated. The DTA indicated the temperatures at which reactions started and whether they were exothermic or endothermic. Weight change data were obtained by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). These data could often be used to support postulated reactions and to eliminate consideration of other possible reactions. EQUlPMENT Differential thermal analysis (DTA) involves measuring the temperature difference between the sample being tested and a thermally inert reference, generally aluminum oxide, as both are heated at a uniform rate. Series connected thermocouples in the sample and reference are used to detect the temperature differences that occur as the sample undergoes enthalpic changes.3 Crystalline transitions, fusions, vaporizations, dehydrations, decompositions and many solid state reactions can be detected. A DTA unit manufactured by the Robert L. Stone Co., Austin, Tex., was used in this investigation with a temperature rate increase of 10°C per min. The samples and reference were placed in Inconel cups with wells in the bottom into which the differential thermocouples fit, and run in a nitrogen atmosphere. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) measures the changes in weight that a sample undergoes as it is heated. A Chevenard thermobalance converted electronically for graphic recording was used with a heating rate of 5°C per minute. An X-Y recorder plotted temperature on the X axis and weight changes on the Y axis. A flow of 250 ml per min of nitrogen was streamed through the furnace. Samples were placed in a porcelain crucible open at the top, unless otherwise noted. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Sulfur: Two sulfur samples from different sources were tested. The DTA of a high purity sulfur and a reagent grade sublimed sulfur are shown in Fig. 1. Nearly all the tests were run with the sublimed sulfur due to the difficulty in grinding and high electrostatic charge encountered with the high purity sample. An intensified search for gas, because of the shortage in the area, led to the completion of 482 wells in southwestern Pennsylvania during 1944. This number was 27 more than the number in 1943, but 118 of the wells were nonproductive. Shallow Development Oil The initial production of the 25 producers completed was slightly less than was obtained from four wells above last yearJs total. The largest well, 20 bbl., was found in the Big Injun (Miss.) sand in Morris township, Washington County, at a depth of 2085 ft. It is currently producing about 3 bbl. per day. Outside the main producing area, a well drilled in Nicholson township, Fayette County, obtained 15 bbl. per day from 1864 to 1866 ft. in the Gantz (U. Dev.) sand. The Federal subsidy of 75¢ per barrel, effective , 1, 1944, which increased to $3.40 the current pipe-line price in this area, seems to have been insufficient stimulus to materially increase drilling for oil, although more repressuring operations are contemplated. Gas The volume of initial open flow of gas developed is off slightly over 10 million cu. ft. from 36 more wells than were completed a year ago, and the average rock pressure of this new gas is more than 100 lb. less than that obtained a year ago. Apparently the best find of this year was reported in Patton township, Allegheny County, where an initial volume of over 4 million cu. ft, was encountered in the Speechley (U. Dev.) sand at a depth of from 3293 to 3303 ft. The rock pressure there, 1190 lb. per sq. in., is nearly virgin. However, this area is fairly well delimited by dry holes and docs not seem nearly so promising from the standpoint of reserves as the Armbrust area, which was discovered several Years ago. In the patton township locality another fair well with 1303 M cu. ft. open flow and 400 lb. Per 59. in. rock pressure completed in the Hundred-Foot (U. Dev.) sand at a a depth of 2125 feet. Armstrong County, as usual, leads in number of producing wells completed with lowest percentage of failures but ranks only fou th in volume of production developed. Only two wells here had more than one million cubic feet capacity, but the rock pessure was under 200 Ib. Per sq. inch. In Fayette County, where the largest portion of new gas was found, activity appears to be shifting eastward. In Luzerne township, four producers having a total combined initial open flow in excess of 10 million cu, ft, were found in the Big Injun (Miss.) sand. The best well was found also in the same area in the Speechley sand (U. Dev.) at a depth of 3460 ft. This was a 2500-M CU. ft. well in Georges township. Several wells of more than a million cubic feet capacity were found in Jackson, Washington, Wayne and Whitley townships, Greene County. None of these, however, was in a new pool.

THE following experience in rebuilding a furnace crucible while in blast may not be wholly uninteresting to some, notwithstanding its purely practical character. Few are aware of the frequent calls made on a furnace manager's skill and ingenuity, to meet the irregularities which present themselves with kaleidoscopic variations in the operations of furnaces. Unfortunately the methods pursued in overcoming these practical difficulties are too seldom recorded, and much valuable information is lost that could not fail to be of value to many, and to none more so than the educated technical manager, with a limited practical experience, who, without a literature or record of any kind to refer to, finds himself, in times of emergency, dependent and looking for assistance from those whom it is his province to instruct and direct. With positive data, however, that like difficulties have been successfully overcome, he can confidently resort to similar expedients, with such modifications as the circumstances may demand in his particular case, and pull through seeming impossibilities in the face of ignorant prejudice. The Quinnimont Furnace (60 x 15 feet) had been in operation but two months, when it became necessary to draw the tuyeres out a distance of 18 inches, in order to give them a resting-place; the brickwork under them being completely cut away, so that after each

Stress corrosion cracking of two heats of 18 pct Ni maraging steel in rod form immersed in an aqueous solution of 0.6N NaCl at pH 2.2 has been studied on un-notched specimens stressed in a hard tensilf machite. Austenitizing temperature in the range 1830 to 1400 F has been shown to have a marked influence on the propensity to crack, the loulest austenitizing- temperature producing the greatest resistance to failure. In the nzosl susceptible conditions, the cracks followed the original austenile grain boundaries; but when tlze steels zcere heal treated to inproze their resistance to stress corrosion, the cracks becatne appreciably less branched and slzouqed significant tendencies to become trans granular. Electron metallography of the steels indicated the presence of snzall particles, possibly of titanium carbide, along- the prior austenite grain boundaries and these particles u:ere more readily detectable in the structures that were most susceptible to cracking. Crack propagation rates, which appeared to be dependent upon applied stress and structure, were usually in tlze reg-ion of 0.5 mm per hr and may, therefore, be e.xplained on tlze basis of a purely electrochetnical ,nechanism. However, there is some ezliderzce from fractography that crack extension may be assisted by ttlechanical processes. Anodic stit)zulation reduced the tiwe to fracture, although cathodic currents of small magnitudes delayed cracking-; further increase in cathodic current resulted in a sharp drop i,n fracture litne, possibly due to the onset of hydrogen ewbrittlement. THE use of the high strength maraging steels, with their attractive fracture toughness characteristics, is restricted because of their susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in chloride solutions. Although this limitation has resulted in investigations of the stress corrosion susceptibilities of these steels, there have been few systematic studies aimed at defining the various parameters that determine the level of susceptibility. It is the case that the usual tests have been performed with the object of defining some stress or time limit, on unnotched or precracked specimens, within which failure was not observed,' but while such results may be of some use in design considerations, they are necessarily concerned only with the steels as they currently exist and not with their improvement to render them more resistant to stress corrosion failure. This omission may be considered unfortunate because the indications are that stress corrosion in maraging steels shows dependence on structure in following an intergranular path, and since experience with other systems of intergranular stress corrosion crack- ing is that susceptibility may be varied by modifying heat treatments, a similar effect may be expected with maraging steels. It is sometimes from such observations that a fuller understanding of the mechanism of stress corrosion crack propagation begins to emerge, leading in time to the development of more resistant grades of material. The present work was undertaken to study only one aspect of the influence of heat treatment upon the cracking propensities of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel, namely the effect of austenitizing temperature, although certain ancillary measurements and experiments have been undertaken. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Most of the measurements were made on a steel, A, having the analysis shown below, although a few results were obtained on a steel, B, having a slightly different composition. Both steels were supplied in the austenitized condition, A as 3/8-in-diam rod and B as 1/2-in.-diam rod. Cylindrical tensile test pieces were machined from the rods: the overal length was 2 1/2 in., the gage length 1 in. and the diameter 0.128 to 0.136 in. The stress corrosion tests were carried out with the specimens strained in tension in a hard beam testing machine, the necessary total strain being applied to the specimen over a period of about 30 sec, after which the moving crosshead was locked in position and the load allowed to relax as crack propagation proceeded; the load relaxation was recorded. The load was applied after the specimen had been brought into contact with the corrosive solution, the latter being contained in a polyethylene dish having a central hole through which the specimen passed, leakage being prevented by the application of a film of rubber cement. The specimen was in contact with the solution for over half of its gage length and the solution was exposed to the air during testing. SMALL power-driven, toothed, cast-iron rolls were used first to break anthracite in 1844. Prior to that time, men with hammers, who stood on perforated cast-iron- plates, .broke the large lumps into commercial sizes. In order to convert run-of-mine into the various sizes required by the anthracite industry, about 20 million tons must be broken, annually, [ ] into smaller sizes. This phase of anthracite preparation is of major importance, because the degradation accompanying reduction in coal sizes should be kept at a minimum. The exclusive use of toothed rolls for that purpose indicates that comminution by rolls is the best solution of the problem. Many improvements have been made in tool design, but the most important was a reduction of the peripheral speed of the rolls from 1000 to 300 ft. per minute. The higher speed was based upon and approximated the velocity of a falling piece of coal when it entered the rolls. Exhaustive roll tests at the slower speed showed that the same size reduction could be affected with less degradation. Deformation substructures of' polycrystalline tungsten, W-2, 9, and 24 pct Re, and W-3 pct Ta were studied by tra?zsrnission electron microscopy. The stress-strain curve for unalloyed tungsten showed gradual yielding followed by work-hardening. Electron nzicrographs indicated a gradual increase in dislocation density with increase in strain up to 5.0 pct. Dislocations, although frequently jogged, were straight over moderate distances and were in a randorn array. Stress-strain curves for alloy specimens of W-2 and 9 pct Re and W-3 pct Ta exhibited a drop in stress at yielding followed by only slight work-hardening. Electron micrographs of these specimens after strains of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 pct revealed no change in dislocation substructure from the unstrained specimens. After 2.0 pct strain, the three alloys exhibited dense networks. W-3 pct Ta was characterized by straight, frequently jogged dislocations comparable with the dislocation structure in unalloyed tungsten after a similar amount of strain. In contrast, W-2 pct Re exhibited dislocations that contained widely spaced jogs, while W-9 pct Re had developed a cell structure after the relatively srnall strain of 2.0 pct. The W-24 pct Re alloy contained a few dislocations after 0.1 pct strain, while after 0.5 pct strain twins were evident. Dislocation slip bands apparently preceded the twins. The stress-strain curve for the alloy indicated that twinning commenced after approximately 0.25 pet strain. These results indicate that the primary effect of low rhenium concentrations (2 and 9 pct) in tungsten is to increase dislocation multiplication after macroyielding by reducing the Peierls-Nabarro force (lattice resistance to dislocation motion). The dislocation bands that precede twins in W-24 pct Re may be caused by localized internal stresses resulting fro a metastable structure, for example, clustering of rhenium atoms. The effect of high rhenium additions (22 a 65 pet* Rproperties of tungsten. Klopp, Witzke, and Raffo5 reported bend transition temperatures as low as -100°F (200°K) for dilute electron-beam-melted W-Re alloys tested in the worked condition. Recrystalliza-tion increased the bend transition temperature, but alloys with 2 to 4 pct Re were still markedly superior to unalloyed tungsten. Fractographic examinations of tungsten and W- 3 pct Re and W- 5 pct Re alloys by Gilbert 6 revealed that these low rhenium alloys showed a greater tendency toward cleavage failure than did tungsten. Garfinkle 7 showed that rhenium additions, up to 9 pct, to (100) oriented tungsten single crystals increased the proportional limit stress and decreased the flow stress and the rate of work-hardening. In addition, while deformation in unalloyed (100) oriented crystals apparently involved both (110)100) and (112) slip, crystals with rhenium contents of 5 andpct or more deformed primarily by (112) slip. The mechanism by which high and low rhenium additions affect the mechanical properties of tungsten is still not well-established. The present investigation was undertaken to determine by transmission electron microscopy the effects of low rhenium additions, 2 and 9 pct, and a high rhenium addition, 24 pct, on dislocation substructure in the early stages of deformation of polycrystalline electron-beam-melted tungsten. Unalloyed tungsten and a W- 3 pct Ta alloy were included for comparison. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Triple electron-beam-melted tungsten, W-2, 9, and 24 pct Re, and W- pet Ta were used for this investigation. Chemical analyses of the cast ingots are given in Table I. A description of the starting metal powders and melting and fabrication pro-cedures for unalloyed tungsten and the W-Re alloys is reported.5 The W-3 pet Ta alloy was processed in a similar manner. Compression specimens measuring 0.300 in. (7.6 mm) in length by 0.130 in. (3.3 mm) in diam were machined from swaged rods. All alloy specimens were annealed in a vacuum of 8 x 10- 6 Torr (10'2iVper sq m) for 1 hr at 3600°F (2255°K). The recrystallized grain size ranged from 0.06 to 0.08 mm diam for the alloy specimens. Unalloyed tungsten was annealed at 2400° F (1589°K) for 1 hr to produce a recrystallized grain diameter of approximately 0.12 mm. Specimens were electropolished in a 2 pet NaOH solution to a diameter of 0.125 in. (3.18 mm) to remove surface notches resulting from grinding and to improve reproducibility of t data. The ends o the compression specimens were ground flat, parallel to each other, and perpendicular to the longitudinal axes with 4/0 emery paper. Compression Tests. The compressive stress-strain apparatus used for compression tests is described in detail by Stearns and Gotsky.9 Room-temperature compression tests were conducted at a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min (0.25 mm per min).

A remarkably simple construction system that derives its internal stability from metal straps buried in backfill is finding diverse mine applications, ranging from rock crusher headwalls to massive slot coal storage facilities. Reinforced Earth (Re/Earth), the system trade name of Reinforced Earth Co., is proving itself 20-50% less expensive than alternative earth embankment structures, and in the case of cast-in-place concrete walls, six to seven times faster to erect. While the majority of applications are in the realm of civil engineering-projects such as retaining walls, bridge abutments, slide buttresses, and containment dikes-a growing proportion is mine related. Of the estimated 120 Reinforced Earth projects that will be completed this year, company president David P. McKittrick expects mining to account for about 20% of the business volume.

The two-phase flow of a drilling fluid in a diamond drill bit is investigated by deriving and solving the steady-state continuity and momentum equations. Parameters in this analysis are rotational speed of the bit, local rate of addition of drill solids, non-Newtonian nature of the drilling fluid and drilling rate. The describing equations relate the flow and pressure drop to the design characteristics of the bit. The equations are integrated numerically yielding the flow-rate pressure drop characteristics for the bit, flow distribution in the bit and velocity and static pressure as a function of position in each flow channel of the bit. Results are presented for a particular bit design. This paper shows that under normal drilling conditions certain parameters may be neglected in the hydraulic calculations for a diamond drill bit. Therefore, shortened forms of the equations presented can be used to fit the proper diamond bit to the drilling fluid hydraulic system. INTRODUCTION Like the conventional bit, the diamond drill bit is a key component in the circulating system of a well. The conventional rock bit is fitted to the circulating system by selecting the flow nozzles which provide the system with the proper flow-rate pressure drop relationship. Fluid behavior across the face of the diamond bit must be better understood so the bit can also be fitted to the circulating system. Data from field-operated diamond bits are presently available and do yield some information regarding the flow-rate pressure drop relationship. However, the number of factors affecting this relationship is quite large. Drilling parameters and conditions such as bit penetration rate, bit weight and rotational speed are important. Moreover, flow channels in the bit are part of the cutting head, and introducing drilled solids into the flow channels reduces the flow area, causes additional drag and influences the pressure drop. Many tests would have to be performed if field tests were required to study all parameters which might influence fluid behavior in the bit. A logical approach to this problem is to investigate analytically the fluid behavior in the bit, including parameters that are present under normal drilling operations. This approach, which seems to offer the best method for future studies, is presented in this paper. Following is the general procedure. 1. Equations describing the most general flow channel are written and include the addition of drilling solids (which is related to penetration rate), rotation of the bit, design parameters of the bit and non-Newtonian properties of the fluid. 2. A typical bit is designed and the bit parameters are substituted into the equations. 3. Parameters are assumed (penetration rate, rotational speed of the bit, mud weight, etc.). 4. The describing equations are numerically integrated to obtain the pressure drop across the face of the bit as a function of flow rate. 5. The pressure-drop contribution of each component (friction, acceleration, etc.) is obtained from the numerical solution, and those factors which largely influence the total pressure drop are identified. Classifying the drilling fluid is important in establishing the friction factor relationship since the frictional pressure losses are the main contributors to the total pressure drop. High-density drilling fluid is commonly assumed to be a Bingham plastic. 1-3 Govier4 presented a method for selecting a friction factor in the laminar flow region from the rheology properties of the mud and a modified Reynolds number. Metzner5 presented a criterion for selecting the friction factor in the turbulent flow region. The bit design used in conjunction with the solution of the equations has divergent flow channels. Stall, which is the backflow of fluid in the channels due to eddies that occur on the outer perimeter of the flow stream, can occur in these divergent channels (or diffusers). POTENTIAL differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about 15 years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electrochemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are modified to measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles.
