THREE-QUARTERS of the amount needed to defray the cost of the Louvain memorial clock and carillon has been subscribed by one-thirtieth of the total number of mem- bers of the engineering societies that are indorsing this memorial to the engineers who gave their lives in the Great War. Gifts of materials and services have been made, but about $20,000 is still needed to meet the total expense involved. Small contributions from the twenty-nine-thir- tieths of the total membership who have not yet subscribed should promptly provide this sum. The accompanying illus-tration shows the 48 gold stars made by the American Brass Co. for the four faces of the clock, being boxed for shipment at the works of the Dwight & Lloyd Co. at Netcong, N. J. The actual material of the stars is, of course, an aluminum bronze, which retains its gold color without tarnishing.

Various methods have been proposed in the literature to calculate the pressure losses in drill-pipe and bit-nozzles, i.e., those parts of the mud-circuit where the largest pressure-losses occur. Very few data, however, are available to check the validity of these proposals. Presented in this paper are the results of pumping experiments with clay-water drilling fluids of different specific gravities and different laminar flow-properties (differential viscosity and Bingham yield value), using pipes of different diameters. In addition, a series of measurements on bit-nozzles is discussed. Two main conclusions may be drawn from this work for the flow through pipes. 1. In the laminar flow region pressure losses can be calculated from the differential viscosity and Bingham yield value of the mud. 2. In the turbulent flow region pressure losses can be calculated with good approximation from a viscosity term which is determined by the volume fraction of the dispersed phase. Calculations making use of laminar flow properties may lead to erroneous results. The effect of temperature on the pressure losses in the case of turbulent flow can be calculated from the change in viscosity of the dispersing medium, i.e., water. The main conclusions determined for the flow through bit-nozzles are that for flow conditions prevailing in the field, the pressure-drops in bit-nozzles are independent of the laminar flow properties of the mud. They are solely determined by the density of the mud and the geometry of the nozzle. INTRODUCTION The last decades have witnessed a steady increase in the depth of oil wells. This is illustrated by the increase in the drilling depth record in the USA from 8,046 ft in 1927 to 21,482 ft in 1953. This increasing depth, together with the experience that high rates of mud circulation and high fluid velocities in the bit-nozzles enhance the rate of drilling, has emphasized the importance of selecting suitable mud-pumps when starting the drilling of a deep borehole. For such a selection it is necessary to be able to calculate the pumping pressures necessary to obtain the required circulation rates. The main part of the pressure-losses in the mud circuit occur in the drill pipe and the bit-nozzles. Various methods have been proposed in the literature to calculate the pressure-losses in the drill pipe1,2,3,4. These methods do not all lead to the same results, and at the time this investigation was started insufficient basic data were available to check their validity. Moreover, to our knowledge, no data are available at all on the effect, if any, of the flow-properties of the mud on the pressure-losses in bit-nozzles.

IN our never ending search for new and better ways of underground mining, we find that transportation has had its share of new ideas in the past few years. The old and still effective method of track haulage has had some competition from rubber tired cars and belt conveyors, each of which has its own safety hazards which demand close scrutiny in any safety study. The use of shuttle cars, in particular, has introduced clearance hazards caused by the absence of the more or less positive guides formed by the rails of a track sys¬tem; likewise the requirement of greater clearance tends to increase roof hazards which we all know to be great enough with the best of methods. However, the subject of transportation hazards is too broad to be covered entirely in one paper, so I will confine myself to track methods which carry the preponderance of underground tonnage. I am quite sure that to this group it is an evident fact that haulage accidents are of major importance. However, to stress the point, it may be well to look at a few figures. The Anaconda Company, through its wholly owned subsidiary The Anaconda Company (Canada) I,td., has investigated, optioned and partially developed a large tonnage of iron ore amenable to magnetic concentration. The reserves are located in north central Ontario and occur within a twenty-two mile belt of layered and intricately folded metamorphic rocks, close to the north contact of an igneous complex of granite and pegmatite. There are two main ore deposits. Briarcliffe is a steep to vertically dipping body 100 to 500 feet wide and over a mile long. The Two Mile Lake deposit is flat dipping and confined to an open, asymmetrical syncline; it is approximately a mile wide and 250 to 4.00 feet thick. On its flat easterly plunge, it is saucer-like in shape and is amenable to open-pitting for an east-west distance of several thousand feet. Magnetometer surveys, confirmed by drilling, indicate at least a three mile eastward extension of this deposit. Location and Access: The property is located in the Kowkash Mining District of northwestern Ontario, roughly forty-four miles north of the community of Nakina on the main line of the Canadian National Railroad. (Fig. 1) Access during the exploration period was entirely by airplane from Nakina. (Fig. 2) More recently, Nakina itself was connected to the highway network in the Longlac-Geraldton area. The property is roughly 190 miles by existing and proposed railroad from the Great Lakes waterway system. The Trans-Canada pipeline moving natural gas from western to eastern Canada passes through Geraldton roughly 70 miles south of the property. Topography: The surface features in the area are typical of a sizeable portion of the Precambrian Canadian Shield area. Many lakes, low swampy areas, and glacial moraine-type features are common in this recently glaciated area. The average elevation is between 800 and 900 feet above sea level, and the relief is probably less than 100 feet with the greater portion of the area less than 50 feet. The topographic "highs" are formed either by outcrops that were resistant to glacial erosion or by moraines, eskers and drumlins which were deposited upon the recession of the glaciers. The better mineralized zones, composed chiefly of quartz and magnetite, commonly form ridges resistant to erosion and weathering. Previous Work: Because of the obvious outcrop of the magnetite-rich beds and knowledge gained from early developments within the general region, it is conceivable that the presence of the iron formations has been known for a good many years. THE first session of the Institute was held on Tuesday evening, September 16th, in the William Molson Hall, of McGill University, Dr. T. Rivard, Mayor of Montreal, who spoke as follows : GENTLEMEN: We welcome you with pleasure to our city, and we are proud to find that you have deemed it worthy of your visit. I understand that your association was founded in 1871 with some thirty courageous members, and that so valuable has it been esteemed, and so attractive was it found, that nearly one thousand have now enrolled their names as members and associates. Much of civilization is due to the discovery of metals, and the magnitude of our works to their widespread abundance. The high temperatures encountered in the operation of jet engines have imposed most drastic requirements upon the materials used in their construction. There are two different approaches to the materials problem connected with the design of parts in contact with high temperature gases. The first approach is to use a material which will perform satisfactorily at a temperature comparable to that of the gas. The second approach is to use a cooling system so that the material is maintained at a temperature appreciably lower than that of the gas. Besides the conventional method of cooling by means of a liquid in contact with the material exposed to a high rate of heat transfer, a less orthodox method consists of making the part to bc cooled of a porous material', so that the cooling fluid can be forced through the pores, In this scheme, the temperature of the coolant moving in a direction opposite to that of the heat flow increases gradually while passing through the porous material, and the coolant forms a protective layer on the surface exposed to heat, This method, referred to as ((sweat cooling," was pro- posed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in September 1944, and the experimental work on the preparation of porous metals was started early in 1945. The sweat cooling method opens new lines of research in powder metallurgy by extending the field of application of porous metals. The porous metals available at the present time are used mostly as bearings or filters, and a rather limited number of alloys are made for these applications. In addition, the fabrication of bearings or filters does not require a very close control of the permeability, while in the case of sweat cooling such a control is of primary importance. In designing a sweat cooled part it is imperative to assure a given rate of flow of coolant under certain conditions of Pressure drop. Generally, the Proper pressure drop and the rate of flow of coolant are deduced from heat transfer and design considerations, and consequelltl~ the Permeability of the Porous metal to be used is also determined. It is therefore necessary for the designer to have available a continuous series of porous metals covering a range of permeability as wide as possible. Contrary to the requirements established in the fabrication of filters, the actual pore size of a porous metal intended for sweat cooling is of little consequence, except for its effect on permeability. The tensile strength is likely to be of great importance for some applications. Since the tensile strength of a porous alloy decreases with increasing porosity, an important problem is to develop porous alloys having the maximum permeability with minimum porosity.

The old laboratory at the School of Mines was among the notoriously bad ones, being situated in apartments of the main collegebuildings not originally intended, and conspicuously unfit, for the use to which they were put; while, as in many of our schools and colleges, the assaying was done in the basement of the college. Prominent among the disadvantages of such an arrangement are insufficient light, poor ventilation, and little or no provision to carry off offensive gases. It is not my intention now to present a complete description of this building. I wish merely to call attention to a few points in its construction and equipment, which may prove of interest to those who contemplate erecting buildings for snch work, and who may be, as we were in this instance, limited as to funds. Nonferrous alloys upon which desirable properties can be conferred by heat treatment are becoming of increasing industrial importance. The alloys of copper with a constituent which has a solubility varying with temperature are materials of this character. Some of the constituents which are effective in producing a change in the mechanical properties of these alloys upon heat treatment are, according to Corson,' nickel and silicon, iron and silicon, cobalt and silicon, and chromium and silicon. In addition to these elements, Gregg2 states that the combination of beryllium and silicon is effective in producing age-hardening characteristics in copper. The effect of these elements, however, as dispersion-hardening constituents in the copper alpha solid solutions does not seem to have been studied in any considerable detail. This paper deals with the heat treatment and properties of three alpha brasses containing 3 per cent. of nickel plus silicon in the proportion necessary to form the compound nickel silicide, Ni2Si. Some information of a preliminary nature in regard to the hardening by heat treatment of phosphor bronze containing the same percentages of nickel and silicon is included. The method of hardening the alloys, which is effective in increasing the tensile strength and proportional limit, is similar to that used in the case of duralumin type aluminum alloys. It consists of a quench from a temperature at which the hardening constituent is in solid solution, followed by an aging at a lower temperature to precipitate the dissolved constituent in a dispersed condition. This results in an increased resistance of the alloy to deformation with an attendant improvement in the tensile properties.

DURING the heat-treatment of silver specimens for tensile tests it was observed that the bars blistered and became brittle when heated in a hydrogen atmosphere. [ ] To check this unexpected result, a wide variety of commercial silvers were heated in hydrogen at 850°C, Only a few of the materials developed blisters, the most severe of which is the tube pictured in Fig. I. AS a portion of a general study of liquid-metal thermodynamics, high-temperature galvanic cells were used to study the effect of added dilute solutes on the activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450° to 650°C. 1,2 The cells were of the type The experimental procedures have been described previously.1 In the course of studies conducted in the bismuth-rich corner of the systems Bi-Zn-Au and Bi-Zn-Cu, marked discontinuities were observed in the electromotive force-temperature relations for a number of the experimental compositions. Above the discontinuity temperatures, the relations, which were linear, exhibited slopes similar to the binary alloy of the same mole fraction zinc, as shown in Figs. I and 2. Below the discontinuity temperatures, the slopes were markedly different, but the relations remained linear. In general, as the amount of the third eletnent was increased, the slope of the lower portion of the relations tended to become less positive. The slopes of electromotive force-temperature relations reflect the entropy of mixing of zinc and, therefore, the occurrence of a discontinuity marks the transition between two different equilibrium situations involving the solution of zinc. A number of other investigators3-5 have used such observations to determine liquidus boundaries in binary alloys. Since the upper portions of the ternary electromotive force-temperature relations of this study had the same slopes as the binary alloys, the discontinuities are interpreted as marking the transition between the single-phase liquid region and the underlying two- and three-phase regions. Reference to the Zn-Bi equilibrium diagram6 confirms that the binary alloys were single-phase liquids at the experimental temperatures. Fig. I shows the electromotive force-temperature relations for the alloys containing Bi-Zn-Au and Fig. 2 shows similar relations for the Bi-Zn-Cu alloys. In the lower portion of each figure, the temperature of the discontinuity is plotted vs the mole fraction of the added solute at the various levels of zinc concentra- tion. Cross-plots from these curves at constant temperature permitted the construction of the partial liquidus surface isotherms shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

The computer must be more reliable than the coal-cleaning plant mechanical processes if it is to help improve clean-coal quality and yield by performing data gathering and process control tasks. This paper discusses coal-cleaning plant environmental hazards and installation philosophies that can protect the computer. Specific reference is made to a computer system installed at the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal-Cleaning Test Facility.

ABOUT fifty pages of Henry M. Howe's profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neumann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211}. Attempt's to develop the structure of the bands by various methods so that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent. of nickel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2 was reproduced in. the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form {211}. Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form {211} as sketched in Fig. 2.

RECENT lead-smelting techniques have tended toward use of high-grade concentrates with minimum amounts of flu, accompanied by profitable employment of roast reaction.1-5 In order to better understand these smelting processes, thermodynamical calculations have been carried out on the Pb-S-0 system, and the results obtained have been presented in isothermal reaction diagrams in which log Ps, and logPo, were the axes. The diagram thus constructed seems to be more convenient to grasp the equilibrium aspect than those published hitherto.6-8

Machine loading of coal into mine cars is increasing rapidly. Particular reasons for its use frequently apply to certain localities, but in general, it is profitable to install mechanical coal-loading equipment: (I) when existing hand-loading contract rates prevent further cost reduction; (2) when the height of the coal bed requires that either top or bottom must be taken to place cars in rooms; (3) when labor shortage or limited house-plant capacity prevents the production of desired tonnage ; (4) when tonnage requirements are in excess of possible hand-loaded production from developed areas; (5) when working places are scattered and it is possible to concentrate production, and therefore supervision, by the installation of mechanical equipment; (6) when rapid development is essential. Having decided to install loading equipment, the problem then arises as to what type is best adapted for a particular mine or coal bed, the choice lying between mobile track equipment, pit-car loaders, scrapers, shaker conveyors, belt conveyors and drag conveyors. MajoR FactoRs Influencing Choice of Equipment In determining the type of equipment to be used, the following major factors must be studied: Grades.—Adverse grades, while permitting other types of loading equipment to work successfully, may prevent the success of a shaker conveyor installation. Thickness of Bed.—The thickness of coal governs the choice of equipment. A machine that requires 5 ft. of head room should not be selected for a 3-ft. bed where otherwise it would be unnecessary either to brush top or to lift bottom. Nature of Pavement.—Soft or scaly bottoms are unsuitable for the use of any type of digging loader, shaker conveyors or scraper loaders. nigging loaders and scraper loaders scale the bottom, mixing it with the coal and causing preparation difficulties; shaker-conveyor drives frequently work themselves loose, destroying the conveyor alignment and creating maintenance problems. The influence of thermal and mechanical treatments upon the elevated-temperature stability, the microstructure, and the mechanical properties of aluminumaluminum oxide alloys is investigated. Compacts from atomized and flake aluminum powders were sintered at temperatures just below the melting point of aluminum in a vacuum of 10-4 Torr for several hours and were then hot-extruded. During this treatment the hydrated oxide present on the surface of the powder particles decomposes, the water vapor produced reacts with the aluminum forming additional oxide, and the hydrogen developed is removed by diffusion to the surface. Extrusions of compacts so treated are stable at temperatures up to the melting point of aluminum and do not form blisters and internal defects typical of extrusions from untreated powder. Electron micrographs of extrusions from unsintered compacts show long parallel oriented platelets typical of the IN previous investigations1,2 the properties and structure of aluminum alloys were described which had been produced by cold compacting aluminum powder and then hot pressing and extruding the compacts. Both the structure and the properties of these alloys differ significantly from those of commercially produced aluminum-aluminum oxide alloys. When commercial alloys are produced, they are given a sintering treatment in air at about 600°C between cold compacting and hot pressing.3 During this treatment the hydrated oxide, which forms the coating on the aluminum-powder particles from which the alloys are prepared, is decomposed.4 The chemically bound water which is released reacts with the aluminum and forms aluminum oxide and hydrogen. Most of the hydrogen is eliminated by hydrated oxide skins on the original powder particles, while the oxide particles in extrusions from sintered compacts are broken up. The strength of extrusions from treated powder is somewhat lower, but their ductility is considerably improved over that of extrusions from untreated powder. The slip-trace patterns on electron microgvaphs of extrusions which had been strained in tension before replication indicated that the grain size of the extruded alloys was approximately the same as that of the original powder particles. Coarse-grained alloys were produced by severe cold work and annealing of the extrusions. They have significantly lower room-temperature strength, but about the same ductility as the vacuum-sintered fine-grained alloys. The size and shape of oxides in the coarsegrained alloys is similar to those of the fine-grained alloys, but the particles are somewhat more uniformly distributed. diffusing to the interior or exterior surfaces of the compact, but it is difficult to eliminate all of it because the solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum is very low even near its melting point. Extruded alloys which are not sintered before hot pressing and extrusion appear quite sound upon metallo-graphic examination, but develop severe surface blistering and internal fissuring when they are heated to elevated temperatures after extrusion. Fissures and blisters have been observed even in commercial alloys which had been sintered in air, although they are much less severe.' Because of the importance of this sintering treatment it was studied in this investigation in a modified form, using vacuum sintering rather than sintering in air, to insure more complete elimination of occluded hydrogen. The technique is described and the effect of the treatment upon the structure of the alloys is documented. It has been known for some time that extruded aluminum-aluminum oxide alloys are very finegrained, but an exact delineation of grains in electron micrographs has not been possible. This paper describes the field opeturluns at the Fry in situ combustion project in Crawford County, 111. Field operations may be divided into three phases—-preliminary engineering studies of 1960 and 1961, ignition, and, finally, operation of the test. The Fry combustion project was a pilot test of cocur-rent in situ combustion on a 3.3-acre inverted five-spot. In the summer of 1960, air injection tests were conducted using old wells in the area and a new air injection well drilled especially for the test. In the summer of 1961, four new oil wells were drilled on a 3.3-acre pattern for the pilot test. All old wells in the near vicinity of the pilot test were abandoned to preclude any possibility of gas escaping to adjacent formations. A compressor plant was also installed at the test site in 1961. Air injection tests and other engineering studies were made. At the conclusion of these tests, ignition was accomplished with a 40 kw electrical igniter. Operation of the Fry combustion test was little different from the usual oilfield operation with the exception of the high rate of air injection. No difficulty was found with the openhole completion. There were no unusual corrosion or emulsion problems until bottom-hole temperatures exceeded 150F. Four cores were drilled into the burned-out portion of the reservoir with no mechanical difficulties. INTRODUCTION A cocurrent or conventional in situ combustion test was conducted on the Fry unit of the Marathon Oil Co., in Crawford County, Ill. Besides testing combustion in the Fry type of reservoir, the test was intended to evaluate various operating procedures. This paper presents a discussion of the Fry combustion test field operations. The geology of the reservoir and the test performance are discussed in other papers.'.' HISTORY OF THE FRY UNIT The Fry unit consists of 11 leases totaling 337 acres in an area in which oil was originally discovered in 1906. Production from this reservoir, as from all Robinson sand reservoirs in the area, was very high during the first few years. As the dissolved-gas energy was dissipated, early attempts to retard the decline consisted of vacuum, air, and gas repressuring, and recently, most of the area has been subjected to water flooding. Following early air repressuring, the Fry waterflood unit was formed and water flooding initiated in July, 1952. In the area in which the Fry combustion test was conducted, a peripheral water flood of a 160-acre area was developed as shown in Fig. 1. Between 1956 and 1960, it became apparent that the water flood was unsuccessfd. In looking for a suitable site for an in situ combustion test, the Marathon Oil Co. selected the Fry unit as possessing those features most desirable for such a research project. Field operations associated with the Fry combustion test began in the spring of 1960.

BOTH the foundryman and the theoretical metallurgist are now generally agreed that the anomalous "rising" or "bleeding" of certain ferrous castings of killed metal is primarily attributable to hydrogen. How and why the phenomenon occurs, however, have not been made clear. The following discussion is intended to harmonize foundry experience with metallurgical theory so that the foundryman may possibly improve his ability to prognosticate whether a certain casting may bleed or not. BLEEDING, RISING, AND PIPING The "rising" to be discussed here is not to be confused with the action in rimming ingots as a result of the carbon-oxygen reaction, although a conclusion will be drawn that may apply to the art of controlling the rimming action. Only killed metal is considered, which includes both steels and irons. In Fig. I, three killed, chill-cast ingots are shown: a porous ingot whose evolution of gas during late stages of solidification has ejected metal through the top; an ingot in which moderate gas evolution during solidification has lifted the mushy central metal, i.e., it has "risen"; and, third, a sound ingot with good piping characteristics. The first type is referred to as "bleeding," and generally infers that a solid skin had first formed through which the liquid metal later erupted. There is no fundamental distinction between bleeding and rising in reference to killed metal.* POROSITY Hydrogen appears as a cause of bleeding because the gas evolution simultaneously leaves a porosity of a type traceable to hydrogen. Twenty years ago, Melmoth1 noted that killed steel that rose unexpectedly in the mold, if returned while liquid to the furnace and heated further under a reducing lime slag, would again rise in the mold; but that if the ingot were allowed to solidify and was then remelted no rising occurred. A critical quantity of the responsible gas is therefore removed by the rising action. Melmoth associated rising with high silicon (0.7 to 0.9 per cent) and concluded that silicon increased gas absorption. Because silicon is a strong deoxidizer, oxygen must, therefore, be eliminated from consideration of the three common gases in steel-oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen. Butterworth2 later decided that pinhole porosity was caused by gases dissolved in the metal and that hydrogen was obtained from steam in the mold. A new tankhouse was started in January 1959 at the Copper Refinery of the Boliden Co., Skelleftehamn, Sweden. In early 1961 a semiautomatic machine for looping and straightening of starting sheets was introduced to substitute previous manual operations. The machine as well as consequent, racking and handling is described. Finally, economic benefits achieved and new constructions for the future are discussed. HISTORY Tankhouse operations at the Boliden Co. 's Smelter in Skelleftehamn started in 1932 on a scale that since then has been gradually increasing. In order to rationalize the operations, a new tankhouse was erected. It went into production in January 1959 and was designed for a yearly production of 35,000 metric tons at a current density of 16 amps per sq ft. Already from the beginning, however, the tankhouse has been run with a current density of 21.5 amps per sq ft, corresponding to a maximum capacity of 50,000 tons a year. During the time of planning of the new tankhouse, due consideration was given to the possibilities of mechanizing the operations. New ideas could be and were actually tested on full or pilot plant scale in the old tankhouse. In that way we developed a system for the cathode handling including washing, weighing, and transportation. A system using forklift trucks in combination with trailers and overhead cranes has been developed for transportation and racking of anodes and also for handling of anode scrap. With respect to the electrolyte, circulation and temperature control are partly automatic. Special attention was paid to the production of starting sheets, which operation normally requires a great number of man hours, and it was made the object of a particular survey as to the best ways of straightening starting sheets, attaching loops to the sheets, and so forth. As a result, a machine was designed during 1957-58 and built in our own shops. After a period of tests, the new equipment was put in operation commercially on the 10th of April, 1961. Since this date the machine has produced about 2 million starting sheets without interruption and has been the only source of looped starting sheets for the tankhouse. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Fig. 1 shows all the major parts of the system. These parts are: slitting machine with feeding table (I), standard roller leveler, type Ungerer (2), tilting roller table (3), conveyors for sheets and suspension bars (4, 7), storage of suspension bars (51, punching and stitching machine (6), two lift-turn-tilt tables (8) for discharging the starting sheets, two rack conveyors (9) for sheet assemblies. Included are a hy-daulic pump station and panels for pneumatic and electric controls. SLITTING AND STRAIGHTENING The machine is fed by hand by a man sitting in front of the slitting-machine table, Fig. 2. This operator inserts one sheet at a time into the slitter. After being trimmed, the sheet is automatically conveyed to the following step of handling, straightening. The slitting machine cuts away about 8 mm of the upper and lower parts of the sheet (in relation to its original position in the stripper section) for two reasons. The first one is to give the machine sheets of uniform dimensions; the second one is a matter of quality. Normally the starting sheets as stripped have a thick edge at the bottom end. This part would collect anode slimes and might also cause short circuits when inserted in the cells without trimming. The straightener used is of German construction
