Microanalysis of near-surface soils for hydrocarbons is the basis of a method for locating gas and oil deposits. To substantiate this technique, evidence of vertical migration of hydrocarbons from petroleum accumulations is presented. Tabulated data relevant to hydrocarbon surveys conducted in several petroleum provinces are included. PEROLEUM and natural gas are composed principally of the saturated hydrocarbons ranging from methane, the lightest, to nonvolatile liquids and solids containing approximately thirty-five carbon atoms. A technique for locating buried accumulations of these hydrocarbons before drilling obviously requires that some of the hydrocarbons leave the deposit and migrate toward the surface of the earth where they may be detected in their original form. Earliest attempts to link near surface hydrocarbons to petroleum at depth were apparently made by Laubmeyer' in Germany and by Sokolov in Russia. These investigators collected samples of soil air from boreholes one to two meters deep and analyzed them for traces of hydrocarbons. They found that soil air over producing areas is richer in these constituents than is soil air over barren areas. Since 1936 work on petroleum exploration techniques of this type has been going on in this country. However, instead of determining hydrocarbon content of soil air collected in the field, investigators analyze samples of the soil itself for adsorbed and occluded hydrocarbons, which are released by suitable treatment and found in larger amounts than are the quantities reported for soil air. Difficulties often encountered in collecting gas samples in the field, moreover, are eliminated when soil is used as the sampling medium. Field Procedure: Sample locations are first surveyed over the area to be investigated. Care is taken to locate the stations at considerable distances from roads, pipelines, drilling wells, and other sources of contamination. The borehole pay be dug with a bucket-type hand auger or with mechanical drilling equipment. Lubricants are avoided in either case. When the desired depth is reached, a sample is brought to the surface, placed in a pint glass jar or can, and securely sealed. Sample containers are carefully labeled and delivered to the analytical laboratory. Generally a satisfactory sampling depth range is 8 to 12 ft. In some regions, however, satisfactory data are obtained from samples collected at much shallower depths. Such is the case, for example, in areas of west Texas where the limestone and caliche near the surface occlude hydrocarbons and prevent their rapid escape to the atmosphere. In carrying out broad reconnaissance surveys in search of large features, considerable time is saved by first taking samples one-fourth to one-half mile apart along profiles about one mile apart. If the analytical data indicate a hydrocarbon anomaly of interest, additional samples are taken to produce a more dense and uniform sampling pattern within the interesting area. This sampling program is particularly adaptable to areas that are sectionized. In areas covered with a network of roads, sampling along these roads facilitates the reconnaissance survey. Actual sampling density used depends upon areal extent of features expected. When flanks of piercement-type domes where accumulations may be only several hundred feet wide are sampled, stations are often no more than 200 ft apart. Analytical Technique: Of the hydrocarbons composing petroleum, only the more volatile would be expected to reach the surface of the earth. The analytical technique, therefore, was developed to determine only those constituents that exert a vapor pressure at room temperature. Actually, in near-surface soils, only a very small part of the hydrocarbons are heavier than pentane. Details of the analytical technique have previously been reported. Only a brief description of the methods will be presented here. A weighed portion of the sample, about 100 g, is first treated with an aqueous solution of copper sulphate and then with phosphoric acid in a partial vacuum. The copper sulphate prevents the reaction of the acid with carbides that may be present because the sample has been contaminated by auger particles. Such a reaction may produce spurious methane. The role of the acid is to decompose any carbonates present, thereby helping to release the hydrocarbons. The carbon dioxide is removed with potassium hydroxide and the flask containing the

Western Australia is the home of much that is new and interesting in the gold-mining industry. Some of the gold deposits are outranked for size and value by nothing yet discorered, while the value of the ores is, in many cases, rivaled only by their complex character. As in all parts of the world, many of the ore-bodies occur in ways which tax the skill of the miner in following them; and among these the writer considers the case of the East Murchison United more interesting than the average. This is one of the leading gold-mines of the colony in point of production, and is situated near the town of Lawlers, in the East Murchison district. The country for several miles around the mine is mainly granite, and the line of outcrop on which this mine is located can be traced for a long distance. As will be seen from the accompanying plan (Fig. I), there are, at the water-level, two nearly parallel veins running slightly north of west. Structural Features.—The most striking peculiarity of these veins, and the hardest to understand, is their tendency to send out horizontal stringers or side-veins. These vary in size from a veinlet an inch thick to a veil] several feet in width, and they extend with great persistence into the wall-rock on either side of the vein. This tendency is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The usual signs of a movement of the wall-rocks, such as a ribbon-structure of the quartz and a well-defined gouge or seam of clay along the walls, are in many places lacking, while in other places they appear strongly marked. They seem more in evidence below water-level than above. It is a commonlly accepted idea that when a gold-bearing vein loses in width, it often gains in value. In this instance, however, the direct opposite is the case; for in many stopes it has been possible to leave the narrow portions of the vein to act as pillars, and to extract only the wide portions, which are

In this year's review, the concept of solution mining has been expanded to include total solution as well as the technology of leaching, or partial solution methods. Leaching methods continue to make strides in the processing of metallic minerals, particularly in copper and uranium production. No quantitative data are available on the increase of leach operations; however, it is known that there were more systems installed in 1969 and that the estimated 15% of U.S. domestic production of copper produced in 1968 was by leach methods.1 While the number of publications appearing during the year were few,2,3 there were special sessions in this field at the AIME Annual Meeting and SME Fall Meeting in 1969 and more scheduled for these meetings in 1970. Significant areas that should be mentioned are: the continuing interest in bacteria to convert sulfide sulfur to acid thus reducing reagent costs in both copper and uranium sulfide ores, the exploration of leaching agents other than common mineral acids or alkaline solutions,4,5 kinetic studies of leach mechanisms and the development of microfractures for increased leach solution penetration by use of chemical or atomic explosives.6,7

Diminishing returns in management's fight to lower manufacturing expenses have added luster to savings that can be achieved in delivered costs through creative management of the distribution function. This is especially true for companies engaged in the production of bulk commodities, for which transport costs may represent 25 to 50% or more of total delivered price, A. E. Cascino, vice president of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, recently gave an example of why top management in his firm is concerned with distribution: "The price of a ton of phosphate rock, f.o.b. mine, is about $7. The cost of warehousing, freight, and handling frequently totals an additional $11 . . . . If one of our competitors . . . discovers a way in which he can cut his distribution costs by $3, we're dead! Even if we wanted to offset our competitor's more efficient means of shipping with reduced f.o.b. price for our product-we don't have that much profit margin . . . ." In a special report on the revolution now occurring in transportation of goods, Business Week stated in its September 24 issue: "Moving and storing goods on their way from mine and mill through various sub-assemblies to their final markets costs anywhere from $50 billion to $75 billion a year- $100 billion if paperwork costs are included.

THE CHAIRMAN (WILLIAM KELLY, Vulcan, Mich.).-Some 8 or 9 years ago I was at Daiquiri, only a. few miles east of Firmeza, where there are deposits of iron ore of the same general character. There is a great conical hill, perhaps 800 or 1,000 ft. in height and the ore deposit appears to be somewhat in a canoe shape on one side of the hill. The mining has been done by quarrying the ore in benches. These are called levels and to go to the 10th level it was necessary to take mules and ride to the top of the hill, which was to me an upside down arrangement of numbering levels and a novel method of entering and viewing a mine. A little copper ore can be seen in places, and not being a geologist I thought the deposit might possibly be a gossan, but none of the geologists who have written on the subject approve of this hypothesis and the great question seems to be what part, if any, the limestones have played in the origin of ore; whether these deposits are replacements of limestone and whether they are contact ,deposits between the limestone and the other rocks. Examinations have been made by many eminent geologists and the problem has been discussed vigorously on both sides. The deposits are exceedingly interesting from a commercial standpoint and although they have been studied for a number off years the origin of the ore is still a difficult and somewhat controversial question. SINGEWALD, JR., Baltimore, Md.-I have had the privilege of visiting these deposits and have been very much interested in this paper, of Dr. Roesler's; having been on the ground, I can easily appreciate the difficulties under which he labored in attempting to work out the geology of that region, and he certainly deserves considerable credit for the way in which he has deciphered the geological relations of the Firmeza district. There are several points in his paper 1 ,would like to discuss; first, in regard to the geological interpretations. His differs from previous interpretations in the relative age of the diorite and the granite, but you will note that Prof. Lindgren suggests the probability. that those two rocks are very closely of the same age, and Prof. Kemp actually suggests, although he does not-accept the idea, that the granite is probably later than the diorite, so that there seems to be no particular reason

Deep-sea manganese nodules are considered to be potential ores of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Considerable time, effort, and funds have been applied to the study of the distribution of nodules on the seafloor and the location of economically important areas, but less effort has been spent in understanding the origin of nodules. Most theories that have been proposed to explain the origin of manganese nodules have been based on inorganic processes. It is not by coincidence, however, that the area considered to be most economically feasible is, in the zone of high biological productivity in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean and underlain by siliceous biogenic sediment. The genesis of manganese nodules and the concentration of many trace elements are related indirectly, and possibly directly, to the activities of organisms.

The construction and operation of by product coke-oven plants in America are essential to strong national defense and of the greatest importance to many widely diversified undertakings as well as to safety and health. Carbonization Process Coal used under a boiler or in a locomotive is consumed by combustion. Coal used in a by-product oven is distilled or carbonized, meaning that heat is applied to the coal, out of contact with air, causing a distillation that removes the volatile matter in the coal in the form of gas and vapor, leaving coke as a final product. From the gas and vapor distilled from the coal, many valuable substances can be secured, known as by-products. Hence the name "by-product oven." The simplest example of this principle can be shown by means of an ordinary clay pipe. If powdered coal is placed in the bowl of the pipe, the opening of the bowl is plugged with clay, and the bowl placed in a flame, the bowl will become hot, transferring the heat through the wall of the bowl to the coal within. When this coal attains a temperature of about 750°F., gas will begin to pour out of the pipe stem, and this gas may be lighted. A black liquid also will exude from the stem of the pipe, This is tar mixed with certain other products. What remains in the bowl after distillation is coke. A coke oven corresponds to the bowl of the pipe. A modern oven of the latest type is a refractory brick chamber approximately 42 ft. long and 14 ft. high, averaging 18 in. in width. The oven is filled with coal through closable charging holes in the oven top. Each end of the oven consists entirely of a self-sealing door, the removal of which permits the finished coke to be discharged by means of a power-operated pusher machine. The ovens are built in batteries, and the heating is effected by gas burned in vertical flues in the oven walls, each set of flues heating the walls of two adjacent ovens. Such ovens carbonize a charge of approximately 18 tons of coal in 18 hr., or have a daily throughput of 24 tons per oven, producing about 17 tons of coke. In times of need, the output may be increased by raising the temperature of flues, thus shortening the coking time. There is one great essential difference in principle between distillation in a clay pipe and in a coke oven. In the 18-in. oven, the distillation proceeds from two parallel walls held at a high temperature (over zooo°F.) and instead of all the coal being heated at once, the distillation is a progressive one creeping inward. The average travel of this heating is 35 in. per hour from each vertical wall, and as the volatile products are formed progressively they must push away from the interior toward the wall through the previously formed hot coke, then up the walls and Over the top of the coal charge, finally escaping through the outlet pipe. This results in a cracking of the components into many different and valuable substances not formed when the carbonizing temperature is low.

With the coming of the month of 'October the various sections are beginning active work for the winter. The Colorado, Washington, Montana, and New York Sections are all doing good work in raising funds for the hospital bed at Rheims which is to be a memorial to the members of the A. I. M. E. who gave their lives in the great war. We hope that all the other sections will begin to work with this object in view and will make even a better record than they did with the Belgian Relief Fund. It was with much regret that the President, Mrs. James F. Kemp, and the Secretary, Mrs. Sidney J. Jennings, were obliged to forego the pleasure of attending the Chicago meeting in September. They were, however, ably represented by Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight who gave an informal talk after which was formed the Illinois Section, which has our best wishes for all success-" Over the top and the best of luck!"

The committee appointed .by W. R. Ingalls, president of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, to nominate candidates for the' annual gold medal of the Society consisted of E. G. Spilsbury, J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Bradley Stoughton. This committee recommended Mr. Schneider of the Creuzot Works in France for achievements in ferrous metallurgy, which recommendation was approved by the Society. From the report of the committee, the following facts relative to Mr. Schneider's career are taken: Born in 1868, Charles Eugene Schneider undertook the management of the Schneider establishment in 1898, after the death of his father, Henri Schneider. Under his enlightened management, the Schneider establishments have been considerably extended, their activity being not only directed to increasing production, but also to spreading more and more their scope for action in all branches of industry-in metallurgy, mechanical and electrical construction, shipbuilding, artillery and ammunition, and in public works. During the 10 years preceding the war, the number of employees in these establishments, and without counting those of the more numerous subsidiaries, increased approximately 50 per cent. While giving to peace industries all the attention necessitated by the progress in science and the continual improvement in industrial methods and products, Eugene Schneider, with a perspicacity that recent events have justified in a striking manner, especially directed his

INTRODUCTION In early 1979 Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR) of Brookwood, Alabama approached TMCI Construction, Inc (TMCI) to make a proposal on a program that involved the sinking of up to 10 ventilation shafts of approximately 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter and ranging in depth from 500 to 700 m (1650 to 2300 ft) for the JWR coal mines in Alabama. At this time TMCI was already constructing the first spiral underground bunker (capacity 2000 tons) in North America for the JWR organization at their No. 4 mine in Alabama. The TMCI proposal was based on the use of the mos modern large diameter shaft boring machine rather than sinking the shafts using the conventional drill blast-muck technique. The proposal was made based o: the experiences by the parent company, Thyssen Schachtbau, which has been using this type of machin in Germany for shaft boring since 1971. As a result of the TMCI proposal JWR issued a purchase order to TMCI for the construction of four 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter, concrete lined, unfurnished ventilation shafts ranging in depth from 500 to 700 (1650 to 2300 ft). An order was thus placed with WIRTH Machinen- and Bohrgeraete Fabrik GmbH, in Germany for the manufacture of a model 650/850 E/Sch "Schachtbohrmaschine" (Vertical Shaft Borer = V-mole which arrived on site in Alabama in early 1981. The first V-mole GSB 450/500 was introduced in Germany in 1971 and was capable of enlarging in one step a pre-drilled 1.2 m (4 ft) pilot hole to 4.5 - 5.0 m (14.7 - 16.4 ft). This machine has sunk 9 staple shafts and deepened one surface shaft for a total of 2360 m (7740 ft) of shafts. On the last shaft boring operation in 1978 the machine was converted as an experiment to drill without a pilot hol using a hydraulic pumping system to remove the cutting debris. A second generation machine, the SB VI 500/650, was introduced in 1977 for enlarging the pilot hole to a range of 5.0 - 6.5 m (16.4 - 21.3 ft) diameter. This machine is still in operation and has already drilled well over 2000 m (6500 ft) of shaft. The third generation of V-mole, the SB VII 650/85( for diameters from 6.5 to 8.5 m (21.3 to 27.9 ft) was: commissioned in May 1980 and has been used for two surface shaft deepenings totalling 606 m (1990 ft) with another scheduled for 1982. The main advantages favouring the use of such V-moles were identified as: 1) A reduction in manpower to the crew required in a conventional shaft sinking operation. 2) A considerable reduction in time to complete a shaft compared to conventional techniques. 3) The use of the V-mole eliminates many of the hazards encountered in conventional sinking. Based on the successful performance of the first three V-moles in Germany, Thyssen Schachtbau decided to employ this principle abroad. In 1980 a second machine of the third generation was built and is now operated by TMCI Construction, Inc. in Alabama. The first shaft was completed at the end of 1981 and this paper describes the method of operation including some unique aspects not attempted on prior V-mole operations and some of the statistics arising out of the experiences during the first shaft boring operation. THE NO. 7 MINE FAN SHAFT SITE Jim Walter Resources, Inc. was formed in 1970 to exploit the coal field in Alabama on the southern tip of the Appalachian coal field. The coal reserves amount to around 650 million tons of mainly good quality coking coal of which about 350 million tons are to be extracted over the next 30 years. Shaft sinking and preparatory work began in 1972, and at present 6 mines are producing around 5.4 million t.p.a. Annual production is to expand to 10 million t.p.a. as soon as possible, and the ventilation shafts to be sunk by TMCI play a vital role towards attaining this goal. The first shaft site is located at the No.7 mine, near Brookwood, Alabama. The actual location of the shaft relative to the production shafts is shown on the mine plan (Fig. 1), which also shows the room-and-pillar extraction system used at present. The mine plan further shows the conveyor route used for the muck removal. The geological survey showed that the strata consisted of horizontal layers of mainly sandstone, sandy shale and shale interspersed with several coal seams. The seam being extracted at the No. 7 mine is a combined seam made up of the Blue Creek and Mary Lee seams at a depth of 513 m (1682 ft) and having an average seam thickness of about 2 m (6 ft). At the beginning of September 1980 the surface site preparation and pre-grouting work was completed by JWR, and TMCI was able to commence with Stage I of the shaft sinking program - the drilling of the pilot hole.

INTRODUCTION THE kinetics and mechanism of transfer of a constituent across a slag-metal interface are fundamentally important because many metallurgical processes involve the existence of a slag phase and a metal phase. Industrial processes seldom proceed to equilibrium, and information of the rates and modes of reactions are therefore often of greater practical importance than equilibrium data. A study of the kinetics of sulphur transfer across a slag-metal interface under reducing conditions will contribute a great deal toward a better understanding of desulphurization in the blast furnace process. The general principles existing in the transfer of a constituent, such as sulphur, across a slag-metal interface can be extended to similar transfer phenomena in other metallurgical processes. The present paper will demonstrate how such studies will lead to fruitful results from both the practical and theoretical standpoints. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The apparatus used was simple. A graphite crucible 1 5/8-in. id, a wall 1/8-in. thick, and a depth of 4 in., was packed in an outer fused silica tube with powdered magnesia. The crucible assembly was rotated at a speed of 235 rpm inside an induction coil. A charge of 250 g of Armco ingot iron was introduced into the graphite crucible and melted by induction heating. The melt was held at a desired temperature [ ] for 3-5 min., after which 7.5 g of granular ferrous sulphide was added and the bath was held for another 3-5 min. A metal sample was then taken by means of a fused silica tube and a rubber suction bulb. Immediately after the metal sample was taken, 30 g of a prefused and crushed slag were introduced. Mining any seam can seriously affect subsequent operations in coal seams both above and below the one being mined. The effect is often detrimental to the recovery, cost and safety of mining the subsequent seams. This paper describes the ground control mechanisms involved in mining through a passive subsided zone or all actively subsiding trough. Data were extracted from case studies, primarily from the Appalachia region, for construction of empirical models to predict interaction problems that can occur in overlying seams. Inner-burden thickness, innerburden lithology, percentage extraction, lower seam height, time and overburden were analyzed to determine their effect on upper seam damage. Magnitude of upper seam subsidence was incorporated, together with a broad classification of rock types, to predict the type and range of damage that can occur in the upper seam. Results are summarized in graphically and nomogram form for use in. engineering design.

It was not for the purpose of asserting any superior knowledge or authority, but simply of clearing up, in greater detail, some points casually mentioned in Mr. Scott's able paper, that the writer entered, some two years ago, into the discussion which that paper initiated. In such matters there is always room for differences of judgment, as well as for additional data, which may modify or complete the conclusions even of the best authorities. Those who are immersed in the duties of practical administration or work in the field, and who, being remote from the great scientific national libraries, are obliged to rely on their private collections, and to supplement them by their recollections of earlier studies, labor under special disadvantages in such a discussion; and it must be to the scientific and engineering world a matter for gratitude that Mr. Lyman has been willing to give the benefit of his advantages in this respect. Mr. Lyman would, however, doubtless at once disclaim the conclusion that his masterly summary constitutes " the last word " on this subject, and welcome further evidence, comment and criticism, such as the various contributors may continue to offer. This, therefore, is the motive, and must be the excuse, of the introduction by the writer of the following observations. Silicon thin films were deposited by electron beam evaporation in an ultrahigh vacuum onto (0001) and (1102) sapphire substrates. Attempts were made to correlate the structural properties of the deposited silicon films with the following: 1) substrate orientation, 2) substrate surface condition, 3) substrate temperature, and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000°C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. The following sapphire surface treatments were investigated: 1) annealing in the ultrahigh vacuum at 1200° C; 2) heating in a hydrogen atmosphere at about 1350°C; and 3) etching with silicon by evaporating silicon onto sapphire substrates heated to 1200° or 1300°C. Twinned silicon films were occasionally formed at substrate temperatures between the 800° and 1000°C on unprocessed mechanically polished substrates; however, the reproducibility and crystallinity of these films were generally poor. Single-crystal and twinned silicon films were formed at substrate temperatures between 700° and 1000°C on substrates which were silicon-etched at 1300°C prior to deposition. Fiber texture films were formed at substrate temperatures between 500° and 700°C. The (111) lattice plane of the silicon single-crystal films was parallel to the (0001) sapphire plane and the (100) silicon plane was parallel to the (1102) sapphire plane. TECHNIQUES are well-established for growing single-crystal silicon thin films on sapphire by chemical methods.'-* Vacuum epitaxial techniques have a number of advantages over chemical epitaxial techniques in the fabrication of thin film microcircuits.5 One of the most significant is that vacuum techniques are compatible with well-established procedures for forming vacuum-deposited thin-film resistors, capacitors, and interconnections. Salatna, Tucker, and young6 recently reported the formation of relatively poor crystalline-quality silicon films on sapphire by electron beam evaporation in a vacuum of about 7 x 10-7 Torr. The purpose of the investigation described here is to determine the relationships between the structural properties of silicon thin films deposited on sapphire substrates by electron beam evaporation in an ultra-high vacuum and the following: 1) substrate orientation; 2) substrate surface condition; 3) substrate temperature; and 4) deposition rate. The substrate temperatures were varied between 500° and 1000° C and the deposition rates were varied between approximately 50 and 700A per min. Two orientations of sapphire were used: (0001) and (1102). The thick-nesses of the films were between 8000 and 16,000A. The morphology and crystallinity of the deposited films and substrate surfaces were investigated by optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and electron diffraction. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A cross section of the ultrahigh-vacuum thin-film evaporator is shown in Fig. 1. The bell jar is stainless steel and copper gaskets are utilized at all seals. High vacuum is attained by a 6001iter per sec ion pump and a titanium sublimation pump. Sorption pumps are used to rough the system to a pressure of about 10 µ prior to starting the ion pump. Vacuums in the 10- 10 Torr range were attained after baking the system at about 250°C for 8 hr. Vacuums in the 10-8 to 10-9 Torr range were maintained during silicon evaporation. The silicon charges, which were cut from p-type single-crystal boules which had resistivities between 2000 and 4500 ohm-cm, were placed in the water-cooled copper crucible of a 180 deg bent-beam 5-kw electron beam evaporator. During evaporation, a molten zone was formed in the top center of the silicon charge, and the portion of the silicon charge in contact with the water-cooled crucible remained solid. A capillary tube variable volume cell is described, which has operated satisfactorily over a range of 100°F and 3,500 psi to 550°F and 1,500 psi. The cell contents are entirely visible over the length of the capillary with the exception of a space at the top amounting to three per cent of the total volume. Observations on the critical behavior of simple systems have been greatly facilitated by the apparatus, it being possible to establish the critical conditions for a particular mixture in the course of a day's run. INTRODUCTION Many types of apparatus have been designed for obtaining data on the phase relationships of hydrocarbon systems. Such apparatus can in general be subdivided into two classifications; (l), indirect measurement of phase volume, and (2), direct visual observation of phase volume, each of which has outstanding advantages and disadvantages. Indirect measurement of phase volume requires the use of rather elaborate apparatus including internal probes in which are located the device for determining the locus of the interface between phases. Such equipment is by its very nature costly, and is complex from the standpoint of operating technique. Probing techniques can be used, however, over wide ranges of temperature and pressure with a high degree of reproducibility. Apparatus for visual observation of phase behavior obviously has the advantage of enabling the experimenter to see exactly what takes place, but because the material to be tested is contained in a cell constructed of both metal and glass, is limited severely as to the temperature range of operation. Furthermore. the maximum pressure usually is limited by the choice of material used for sealing the glass to the metal, and by the strength of the glass itself. In the interest of increased efficiency of observation, as much of the cell as possible should be visible to the eye. Glass capillary tubes have been used successfully but have always given difficulty at the metal-to-glass seal. An apparatus has been devised to overcome the problems of sealing and resistance to temperature effects that have heretofore been the limiting factor with glass apparatus in the observation of phase volumes at elevated temperature and pressure. APPARATUS The objective which dictated the general arrangement of the apparatus (Figs. 1 and 2) was simplicity of operation. The air bath, A, was constructed of an iron framework to which was attached approximately one inch of glass wool bats which were covered on the outside with "Masonite." A roughly octagonal center piece was installed to provide forced circulation of the air by the fan, B, past the heaters, D, cell, F, and thermoregulator, C, respectively. The entire top of the box is removable to facilitate charging of the cell and to permit easy maintenance. H. H. Hausner (Sylvania Electric Products Inc., Bayside, N. Y.)—I tested the 18-8 stainless steel powder described by Grobe and Roberts and the results were excellent. The powder was compacted and sintered in purified hydrogen to a very low density (approximately 20 pct and more porosity). Where the other powders show very little ductility when sintered to such a low density, the described stainless steel was surprisingly high in ductility. I would appreciate it if the authors could give us some data on a similar powder but without silicon and also data on 430 stainless steel powder. H. S. Kalish (Sylvania Electric Products lnc., Bay-side, N. Y.)—I should like to verify the excellent results obtained by Grobe and Roberts with their pre-alloyed stainless steel powder. It seems to me, however, that their data are conservative and that even better densities and higher tensile strength can be obtained with these powders by the selection of proper particle size fractions. The accompanying data were obtained by sintering compacts pressed from the powder made by Vanadium-Alloys Steel Co. to 0.8 in. in diam about % in. high in a cylindrical double action die without the use of lubricant. The compacts were sintered for 1 hr at 2370°F in hydrogen purified by passing it through a Deoxo unit (palladium catalyst) and a Lectrodryer. Even the density obtained using the as-received (—100 mesh) compacted at 40 tsi was quite high as was the hardness. This indicates that by increasing the sintering temperature slightly above 2350°F the coining and subsequent secondary sintering operation can be avoided. With the — 325 mesh fraction, however, very much higher density can be obtained and a high hardness. I have no tensile data to present, but I feel that it is not too optimistic to expect. that unusually high tensile strengths and good ductility can be obtained in this sintered material on the basis of the density and hardness data. The sintered stainless steel made by the above-described methods came out of the furnace very bright and clean. The purified hydrogen atmosphere is important in sintering stainless steel to reduce the oxide present in the powder. The result of such a sintering is good densification and good ductility of the sintered product. G. A. Roberts (authors' reply)—We are greatly indebted to Messrs. Hausner and Kalish for their discussions of our paper. Their encouraging remarks are greatly appreciated and their confirmatory data will do much to add to the value of the paper. At the present time it is impossible to provide complete data on a similar stainless steel powder without silicon, but we do know that, in general, the properties are slightly inferior. Data on such a powder and on other stainless steel types are to be published in the near future.

VARIOUS suggestions as to proper fees for engineering services have been put forth by individual practitioners and by the American Institute of Consulting Engineers, the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers, the Iowa Engineering Society and the Mahoning Valley (Ohio) Engineers, for the guidance of both the engineer and his client. The American Institute of Architects also has a schedule of minimum charges (revised 1908). So far as can be determined, however, the four national societies representing civil, mining, mechanical and electrical engineering have never given consideration to this question. An examination of technical periodicals published during the past decade shows that these schedules make provision for three methods of charging; i.e., (A) a percentage of the cost of the completed project; (B) a per diem rate; and (C) a fixed sum.
