THERE are three objectives in translation of works of this character : to give a faithful, literal translation of the author's statements ; to give these in a manner which will interest the reader ; and to preserve, so far as is possible, the style of the original text. The task has been doubly difficult in this work because, in using Latin, the author availed himself of a medium which had ceased to expand a thousand years before his subject had in many particulars come into being ; in consequence he was in difficulties with a large number of ideas for which there were no corresponding words in the vocabulary at his command, and instead of adopting into the text his native German terms, he coined several hundred Latin expressions to answer his needs. It is upon this rock that most former attempts at translation have been wrecked. Except for a very small number, we believe we have been able to discover the intended meaning of such expressions from a study of the context, assisted by a very incomplete glossary prepared by the author himself, and by an exhaustive investigation into the literature of these subjects during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. That discovery in this particular has been only gradual and obtained after much labour, may be indicated by the fact that the entire text has been re-typewritten three times since the original, and some parts more often ; and further, that the printer's proof has been thrice revised. We have found some English equivalent, more or less satisfactory, for practically all such terms, except those of weights, the varieties of veins, and a few minerals. In the matter of weights we have introduced the original Latin, because it is impossible to give true equivalents and avoid the fractions of reduction ; and further, as explained in the Appendix on Weights it is impossible to say in many cases what scale the Author had in mind. The English nomenclature to be adopted has given great difficulty, for various reasons ; among them, that many methods and processes described have never been practised in English-speaking mining communities, and so had no representatives in our vocabulary, and we considered the introduction of German terms undesirable ; other methods and processes have become obsolete and their descriptive terms with them, yet we wished to avoid the introduction of obsolete or unusual English ; but of the greatest importance of all has been the necessity to avoid rigorously such modern technical terms as would imply a greater scientific understanding than the period possessed. The writer assumes that this volume is not intended to serve as a source of statistics on international trade and that the reader is not interested in wading through a lot of statistical tables copied from the various reporting agencies. Generalizations therefore are made whenever possible and not always is the source of the information meticulously cited. The United Nations regularly publishes trade data on mineral commodities. E. J. Gealy, and C. L Kimbell, of the U S Bureau of Mines (USBM), work with these data and estimate that they cover approximately 78% of total mineral commodities traded. THE NATURE AND SCOPE OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE The two and a half decades since World War II have witnessed an unprecedented growth international commerce The end of the war found the world economy seriously crippled. Many countries had suffered severe war damage; international trade was disrupted and nations had to resort to exchange controls and bilateral trading arrangements. The postwar recovery, however, was remarkably rapid Within two decades, world Income more than doubled, and world trade which was less than $60 billion in 1948 exceeded $200 billion in 1968, 8 and reached $278 billion in 1970.18 The growing world trade contributed to world prosperity which in turn fostered growth of trade. This dramatic growth of international commerce was made possible by the progressive liberalization of trade and capital movements by the major trading nations of the world which began immediately after the War and has not yet completely lost its steam. A three ton per day blast furnace using blast temperatures up to 2200°F was operated to recover manganese from open-hearth slag and manganiferous iron ore. The spiegel product containing 12 to 24 pct Mn was blown in a basic converter to high manganese oxide slag as described in the paper which follows this one. HE steel industry, which uses over 900,000 short tons of contained manganese yearly, depends on the maintenance of supplies of manganese from foreign sources such as India, Gold Coast, and Union of South Africa. Domestic ores furnish less than 10 pct of the yearly requirements of metallurgical ores and, unfortunately, the United States has no large, or even moderate, grade deposits that could supply a major portion of the requirements for many years. It may be necessary to obtain manganese from low grade materials, even though the cost is appreciably higher than when imported ores are used. An American Iron and Steel Institute questionnaire prepared in 1949 revealed the startling fact that open-hearth slags contained about as much manganese as is imported annually. The quantity of slag produced each year by integrated steel plants (not including cold-melt shops) and the manganese contained in the slag follows: Flush slag, 4,500,000 net tons a year containing 408,000 net tons Mn; tap slag, 7,230,000 net tons a year containing 364,000 net tons Mn; for a total of 772,000 net tons Mn. Some of this slag is returned to blast furnaces but about 75 pct would be available for the recovery of manganese. In several decades, when many of the present sources of high manganese ores have been depleted, open-hearth slag and manganiferous iron ore may become the major source of the manganese required for steel production. In 1948, manganese-ore imports from the U.S.S.R. were 427,000 net tons or 34 pct of the foreign ore. Imports from this source were only 81,000 tons in 1949. It became evident that adequate stockpiles of manganese could not be accumulated for many years. The Bureau of Mines initiated an extensive research program on methods for increasing domestic production of manganese and entered into a cooperative agreement with the American Iron and Steel Institute for recovering manganese from open-hearth slags whereby the Institute provided additional research funds and trained operating personnel. Description of Process and Equipment Numerous pyrometallurgical and hydrometallur-gical processes and combinations of the two can be applied to the recovery of manganese from open-hearth slag and manganiferous iron ore. The process being developed at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of Mines consists of: 1—Reduction of open-hearth slag in a blast furnace to recover the iron and manganese as spiegel-eisen with 12 to 24 pct Mn. 2—Selective oxidation of the manganese from the blast-furnace metal in a basic-lined converter to produce a high manganese slag with up to 60 pct Mn content, which is a synthetic ore for the production of ferromanganese. RECENT interest has been shown in utilizing solid-state techniques for obtaining large oriented grains in the Alnico Alloys.1-4 Unfortunately, due to the inherent brittleness of these materials it is difficult to introduce sufficient imperfections by deformation to support the nucleation and growth of new, recrystallized grains. As a result, recrystal-lization methods for obtaining large grains, such as the strain-anneal technique, do not appear to be feasible. Steinort et a1.2 used a combination of a thermal gradient and internal strains to obtain large single crystals of Alnico 5 from a poly crystalline casting by annealing at temperatures above 1200°C. It was suggested that the strains were the result of the precipitation of the y phase which exists between -850° and 1200°C. THE application of other than mechanical methods to the study of the mechanical-physical properties of metals has become in the last few years a topic of investigation of ever-increasing interest, both from the theoretical standpoint and from that of the engineer and constructor. Besides the investigations which have been made of 'the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic metals, in their relation to the mechanical properties of these metals, which will be discussed more in detail below, there have been made studies of other phenomena in the same relation, and methods for the mechanical testing of metals have even been suggested, for example, the microscopic method of Tammann,1 and the thereto-electric, method of Turner2 for determining elastic limits. The application of all such methods, which are based upon the dependence of some physical, crystallographic, or possibly chemical property, upon the mechanical state of the metal, must be preceded by close and careful correlation of these various "test" properties with the known mechanical state of the different metals or materials. It is with this view that the present work, as well as that of many previous investigators of, what .may be termed in the interests of brevity, the mechanical-magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials of construction, has been done.

In most instances the fluids produced from underground reservoirs have been described as they appear at the surface, and usually it has not been necessary to distinguish between surface and reservoir phases. More recently it has become imperative to recognize the fact that changes in phase may occur between the reservoir and the receiving unit. The simple terminology of "wet" and "dry" gases and "crude petroleum oil" served our needs fairly well in the shallow, low-temperature and low-pressure fields. It has been left to the legislatures, regulatory commissions, and courts to decide whether a field is or was a gas field, an oil field, or both. This they have done by direct definition and also by implication. For example, in Texas:' (d) The term "gas well" is any well (a) which produces natural gas not associated or blended with crude petroleum oil at the time of production, or (b) which produces more than one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas to each barrel of crude petroleum oil from the same producing horizon, or (c) which produces natural gas from a formation or producing horizon productive of gas only encountered in a well bore through which crude petroleum oil is also produced through the inside of another string of casing. (e) The term "oil well" is any well which produces one (1) barrel or more of crude petroleum oil to each one hundred thousand (100,000) cubic feet of natural gas. In the state of Louisiana, the same general result is achieved largely by the following paragraph :* Wells producing both oil and gas shall not waste or blow into the air an amount of gas of more value at three cents per thousand cubic feet, than the market value of the oil recovered. The Commissioner of Conservation shall allow a reasonable time to determine the status of any well. The steam-generating plant at the Garfield smelter of The American Smelting and Refining Co. consists of two divisions in which the boilers are classed as direct-fired or waste-heat. The direct-fired boiler plant consists of eight 330-boiler hp. type K-19 and S-I 7 Stirling boilers located in the boiler room adjacent to the power house, and two 330-boiler hp. Stirling type K-19 boilers in the reverberatory building, which formerly were connected to a reverberatory furnace but now are arranged for direct firing. All direct-fired boilers are now fired with natural gas. The waste-heat boiler plant consists of all units connected to reverberatory furnaces, and receiving heat from the exit gases therefrom. In this classification there are two 490-boiler hp. Erie City vertical water-tube boilers, and six 330-boiler hp. type K-19 Stirling water-tube waste-heat boilers. Each furnace has boilers arranged in battery setting. The boilers are directly in front of the furnace and connection is made through a short uptake and flue (Fig. 1). The Stirling boiler settings rest on concrete foundations at ground level, with the furnace uptake and flue at a low elevation. The Erie boilers are carried on steelwork some 15 ft. above ground level, and stand against the face of the uptake with no connecting flue. The constructional requirements of a larger furnace dictated this type of setting.

EARLY workers attempted to study the structure of alloys by measurement of equilibrium electrode potentials in aqueous solutions containing ions of the metals from which the alloy was made.1 The method was subject to such limitations (e.g., the difficulty in attaining electro-chemical equilibrium at low temperatures) that it has not been widely used by metallurgists. Recently, Seltz and co-workers have introduced a greatly improved method for studying alloys by measurement of equilib-rium electrode potentials in molten salts.2-4 The mathematical treatment is the same, of course, as for equilibrium potentials of amalgams in aqueous solutions.5 This method will probably find extensive use, since it makes possible not only the deter-mination of phase fields of equilibrium diagrams but also the determination of certain thermodynamic quantities which can be used advantageously in metal-lurgical calculations. However, the method presents difficulties. With many metallic and alloy electrodes, reversibility is not readily obtainable. Also, the difficulty of obtaining suitable material from which to make the cells is increased as the temper-ature is increased. Moreover, the necessity of carrying out measurements in a vacuum requires additional apparatus and intro-duces considerable difficulty, especially at the higher temperatures.

In a previous paper1 it was shown that activation energies for steady-state creep in lead sulfide single crystals varied with the concentration of electronic defects. For n-type lead-excess crystals, values for the creep activation energy, Qc, decreased from 2.9 to 2.2 ev as the carrier concentration increased from 1017 to 1017 electrons per cu cm, while Q, increased from 1.6 to 2.3 ev for p-type sulfur-excess crystals as the concentration of holes increased from 6 X 1017 to 1018 per cu cm. It was also shown in Ref. 1 that the Q, values could best be correlated with the sum of the self-diffusion activation energies in PbS, i.e., for a given concentration of electrons or holes Q, = QPb + Qs, where Qpb and QS are the activation energies for diffusion of pb210 and s35 in PbS. This result suggests that creep rates are controlled by at least two atomic defects, one for lead migration and one controlling sulfur transport. It would be most desirable to interpret these creep energies in terms of an atomic defect disorder model for lead sulfide. Studies of creep rates as a function of sulfur pressure2 indicate that the defects controlling creep rates are singly ionized lead and sulfur vacancies, VPb and Vs. This hypothesis can be more firmly established by determination of Q, under conditions of constant atomic defect concentration rather than constant electronic defect concentration as has been previously done. Therefore, several measurements have been made of Q, on crystals whose con- centration of lead vacancies or sulfur vacancies has been fixed by equilibration under appropriate sulfur pressure and temperature. It was indicated in Ref. 2 that high-temperature isotherms are available which show how the concentrations of various atomic point defects in PbS vary with composition over the entire homogeneity range for the compound. Two such isotherms are shown in Fig. 1 for 900" and 1000°K. Utilizing these isotherms the concentration of a given defect, say Vbb, may be held constant over a particular temperature range by adjusting the sulfur pressure as the temperature is changed. Thus the concentration of one defect suspected of controlling creep rates may be held constant while other defect concentrations vary. The apparent activation energy for formation of these defects can be obtained from the isotherms giving their concentration as a function of sulfur pressure. Activation energies for creep obtained under conditions of constant defect concentration can then be compared with defect formation energies and certain possible atomic defects can be eliminated as creep-controlling species. We have performed creep experiments as a function of temperature at a stress of 244 g per sq mm under conditions which fixed the lead vacancy concentration, V', at 1016, 3.2 x 1016, and 3.2 x 1017 cm-3, and one were the sulfur vacancy concentration, Vs, was held at lo17 cm-3. The results are presented in Fig. 2 as creep rate, k, vs reciprocal of absolute temperature, 1/T. Specimens 34, 35, and 36 were deformed under constant lead vacancy concentration while specimen

Six hundred miles inland from Australia's east coast Port of Townsville in Queensland's sea of rock and spinifex lies Mount Isa. Decarburized iron and Fe-3.28 pct Ni alloys were impact and tension tested in the temperature range of ambient to 4°K. It was found that alloying with nickel improves the fracture properties of the ferrite matrix. The improvement in toughness of iron alloyed with nickel is attributed to the effect of the nickel addition on the temperature and strain rate dependence of the yield stress as well as on slip behavior. The Fe-Ni alloy exhibits wavy slip when strained at temperatures down to at least 50°K. This behavior contrasts with that of the unalloyed iron where a change It is a generally accepted fact that of the common alloying elements of steel only nickel and manganese improve both the room-temperature yield strength and the notch impact properties. It has been argued for a number of years that manganese refines the ferrite grain size, the pearlite spacing, and the grain boundary carbides in medium- and low-carbon steels and thereby increases resistance to brittle fracture.''' This hypothesis recently was confirmed for a 0.04 pct C iron containing manganese, but at the same time from wavy to planar slip occurs at about 120°K. The observed lower temperature and strain rate dependence of the lower yield stress in the Fe-Ni alloy as compared to the unalloyed iron may be attributed to this difference in slip behavior. In contrast to suggestions published previously, transmission electron microscopy showed that the uniform dislocation distributions and the lack of dislocation tangles which are produced by low-temperature straining of bcc materials cannot be attributed to the absence of cross slip at these temperatures. no increase in notch toughness was observed in a decarburized Fe-Mn alloy.3 It thus appears that manganese only increases the toughness of Fe-Mn-C alloys by refining grain boundary carbides and has no toughening effect in carbon-free iron. On the other hand, the mechanism whereby nickel improves toughness has not been established. Hodge et a1.4 have clearly shown that a 3.28 pct Ni addition lowers the impact transition temperature of 0.02 pct C steel approximately 35°C when the grain size is maintained constant. Recently, Wullaert and Tetelman6 stated that nickel refined the grain boundary carbides of an Fe-C alloy and consequently increased the toughness. They also observed the previously reporteda-'

Large scale mining of Mesabi taconites may have moved nearer to realization with the arrival of the latest model Linde Jet-Piercing machine at Reserve Mining Co.'s Babbitt, Minn. property. When the machine is placed in operation it is expected to pierce blast holes in the hard taconite beds up to 10 times faster than is possible with existing drilling equipment. The new primary blast hole drilling machine has been designated the JPM-3, and is the successor to the JPM-1, in operation at Erie Mining Co.'s taconite mines at Aurora, Minn. The size of primary blast holes which can now be pierced has increased from a nominal 61 in. diameter to 71 in. diameter and maximum hole depth has increased from 35 ft to 47 ft. Development has progressed to where 71/2 in. holes can be pierced with the same speed as 61/2 in. holes. Piercing progress is controlled by electronic blowpipe descent controls. Other features of the JPM-3 include: automatic burner ignition from the operating cab; heated and air conditioned operating cab designed for all-year operation; mechanical improvements for sub-zero operation common to the Mesabi, and redesign of wearing parts for longer service with minimum maintenance. The 40-ton machine is self-propelled. Power, oxygen, and cooling water lines trail from the machine. Jet piercing is based on combustion products of oxygen and a liquid fuel such as kerosene. The flame, jetting from a burner at speeds of about 6000 ft per sec, disintegrates layers of spallable rock. The burner is cooled by water which is then directed through orifices around the periphery of the burner. The water changes to steam and carries the spallings out of the hole. The equipment used in Jet-Piercing is essentially a tractor-mounted blowpipe containing a combustion chamber and nozzle, which is in effect a miniature rocket motor, from which the supersonic combustion gases emerge to do their work.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to present the results obtained by solving the fractional flow' and frontal advance' equations to obtain oil recovery at water breakthrough as a function of the length of the system being flooded, the linear velocity of injection and the displacing phase viscosity. The method of solution makes use of the stabilized zone concept first presented by Terwilliger, et al3 when calculating saturation distributions in a gravity drainage system. In order to check the calculated results, the equations and method of solution were applied to the system on which Rapoport and Leas' reported experimental data. METHOD OF SOLUTION The solution of the fractional flow equation and the frontal advance equation is obtained by assuming that a water front forms to sweep the oil out ahead of it. There is ample evidence that under the proper conditions a water 'front does form. If this water front is not to dissipate, the water saturations which comprise it must have equal linear velocities. These water saturations are said to comprise the stabilized zone. Equation (2) indicates that for all these saturations and hence fw must plot as a straight line against saturation for those water saturations comprising the stabilized zone. The water saturations lying between the highest in the stabilized zone and the highest that can be achieved in the porous medium comprise the variable zone. Regardless of the numerical value of the length of the system, the variable zone must eventually span all of it, so that for long enough systems in Equation (1) will be small enough to be neglected. Hence, for the saturations in the variable zone Equation (1) can be simplified to In order to determine the composite fw function applicable to the entire range of saturations in the porous medium, it is necessary to find the water saturation which separates the stabilized zone from the variable zone. This dividing saturation must be on the curve defined by Equation (4), and a tangent curve at that point must pass through the initial water saturation to satisfy Equation (3). Hence, the valid fw curve is given by a straight line starting at the initial water saturation, tangent to the curve of Equation (4): and along the curve of Equation (4) from the point of tangency on. A massive mudslide blocked a river in Utah, impounding a 61 m (200 ft) deep lake. Under emergency conditions, a system was designed and constructed to: (1) drain the impounded lake; and (2) provide a permanent diversion for the river around the mudslide. The system consisted of a low level tunnel, a connecting vertical shaft daylighting close to the lake shore, control valves mounted within the tunnel, and an inlet channel between the lake and the shaft. This paper focuses on the problems and concerns surrounding the inlet channel excavation and the stabilization of the remaining vertical rock walls.

A layer of brass was formed on 0 brass using a vapor-solid reaction technique. The variation in composition with distance within the phase layer and across the a -ß interface was determined by an electron probe. The diffusivities were calculated as a function of concentration; the diffusion coefficient in brass was found to change by a factor of twenty-five over a compositional range of 8 at. pct. An explanation is proposed to account for the large change in the diffusivity, based on possible stresses in the diffusion zone; it is suggested that the concentration dependence of the thermodynamic factor might decrease the activation energy with increasing zinc content. ALTHOUGH the body of data on diffusion coefficients (D- values) in terminal solid solutions and in isomorphous systems is quite large, there is but little quantitative information for intermediate alloy phases. This paper recounts measurements of D-values for the ? phase in the Cu-Zn system. The experimental method employed consists in the forming of alloy layers and determining and analyzing the concentration-distance (c-x) curve. The experimental method employed could have been applied to several systems; the Cu-Zn system was chosen because the D-values in the a and ß phases are well known, and can thus be used for purposes of comparison. The rates of growth, of intermediate alloy layers are known for a number of systems. In nearly all cases the thickness varies parabolically with time, as to be expected if the rate of growth is controlled by the D-values. In a few cases, nonparabolic behavior has been noted.1 Nonparabolic growth may be the result of a) a variation of the composition at the phase interface with time, b) interface-controlled kinetics, c) short diffusion times coupled with long vacancy lifetimes (in vacancy diffusion),2 and d) crystal reorientation during diffusion in anisotropic systems.3 In the Al-Ni system4 and in the Al-u5 system parabolic growth kinetics are slowly approached after an initial transient period. In general those phases stable at a given temperature in a system A-B appear as separate phase layers when A and B are put in contact and given a diffusion he at-treatment. In most cases the compositions at the interface of adjacent phase layers are those read from the phase diagrams for the termini of the respective phases. This discontinuity in concentration is taken as independent of time, and the growth of one phase at the expense of another is assumed to be independent of interface kinetics, i.e., the rate of interface movement is controlled by volume diffusion in the phases concerned. wagner6 has given many solutions for multi-phase diffusion processes, assuming that the chemical diffusion coefficient, D, is independent of concentration, as have others. Jost7 has pointed out that the familiar Boltzmann-Matano solution is as valid for a (c-x) curve exhibiting concentration discontinuities at phase boundaries as for the usual single-phase case. Heumann and associates8,9 have applied this solution to the multi-phase case, but lacking concentration data within the several layers were forced to assume linear concentration gradients, thus calculating only average D-values. The purposes of the present study were: 1) to determine the dependence of D on concentration, 2) to calculate the intrinsic diffusion coefficients D?Cu and D?Zn, 3) to establish the time-law for the movement of the interface, 4) to determine the concentration limits at the ß-? interface, and, 5) to attempt to clarify the mechanism of diffusion. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The ? phase is exceedingly brittle; conventional solid couples and conventional sectioning methods were thus inapplicable. Vapor-solid couples were accordingly employed. Unfortunately the equilibrium vapor pressures of Zn for the ? phase are unknown; to escape this awkwardness, samples were enclosed in a capsule containing powder of an alloy of known composition, sufficiently large in quantity as to be effectively an infinite source, maintaining the concentration of Zn at the sample surface constant with time. The sources of Zn-vapor which can be employed in reaction with Cu, or a brass, or ß brass, to form a layer of ? brass satisfactorily wide in concentration range, are alloys of the phases ?, or ? + E or ? + d (depending on the temperature).

IN connection with other investigations on the properties and characteristics of chilled iron car wheels, the question as to the best range of annealing temperatures was raised. Chilled-iron wheels are cast with a chill against the tread and the inside of the flange, the remainder being in sand. The composition of the metal is so chosen that under these conditions the tread and inside of the flange will show white iron to a depth of from 5/8 to 7/8 in. (15 to 22 mm.), the remainder of the wheel becoming graphitized or gray. In order to relieve the stresses set up during cooling under such drastic conditions, the wheels are stripped from the mold, while still red hot, piled in a soaking pit, and allowed to cool very slowly from their temperature at stripping. Obviously the most suitable temperature for this annealing is the highest at which no formation of graphite occurs within the white tread and at which the wheels can be stripped from the molds. Inasmuch as no direct determinations have been made of the temperatures at which the' formation, of graphite takes place in white iron of compositions used in car wheels upon annealing, it was considered worth while to determine these temperatures as a means of establishing the maximum temperatures at which the annealing of the wheels may be carried out. In the course of this work, some incidental observations were made which are of interest in connection with the theory of graphitization in white iron. The literature on the subject of the formation of graphite both during cooling at casting and upon annealing is very extensive and can be best studied by reference to a comprehensive discussion of the subject by Hatfield. 1 Perhaps the most important contributions of previous investigation are the following: 1. Whether a given mass of molten iron becomes white, mottled, or gray upon casting, depends on its composition and its rate of cooling through the temperature range of solidification and immediately below.
