In western Argentina, in the Province of Mendoza and the Territory of Neuquen, there is a series of solid bitumen deposits which are claimed to be the most extensive in the world. In a linear belt 500 km (311 miles) long, roughly paralleling the axis of the Andes but occupying a variety of positions with respect to the orogenic structures, more than 100 outcrops have been reported. Approximately 70 of these have been prospected, and some mining has been planned or attempted for about half this number. Limited tonnage, high sulphur content, inaccessibility, labor shortages, and disastrous fires have taken a heavy toll among these operations, and in 1947, only 4 deposits were being actively mined, but 8 more were being explored and developed with a view to placing them in production. Inasmuch as these deposits are currently yielding a substantial fraction of Argentina's limited domestic supply of solid fuels, a brief account of the deposits and of the small industry based upon them will provide a commentary on Argentina's fuel problem. Character of Solid Bitumens The solid bitumens of Mendoza and Neuquen are petroleum derivatives, as is indicated by the following ultimate analysis : Constituents Per Cent Hydrogen.................... 6.8 Carbon...................... 82.4 Nitrogen..................... 1.6 Oxygen...................... 2.7 Sulphur...................... 2.2 Ash.......................... 4.3 100. 0 In physical appearance they bear a close resemblance to coal and are commonly called carbon. Their specific gravity has an extreme range of 1.10 to 1.777 in 36 samples weighed, but the average is between 1.14 and 1.24. The material is black, lustrous to dull, with blocky to sub-con-choidal fracture. Though brittle, the purest material is softer than anthracite and exhibits slightly more cohesion. This bituminous material is generally known as asfaltita or asphaltite, but definitive chemical studies indicate that the term asphaltite or grahamite can be applied correctly only to the exceptionally pure material of the Auca Mahuida district in Neuquen. Some other name should be used for the chemically variable bitumens found in all other districts, and the designation "asphaltitic pyrobitumen" has been proposed by Carlos A. S. Piscione.1 At the present time these bitumens are finding favor as solid fuel and as a gas-producing medium. They yield heat values of 8650 to 9750 cal,2 or 14,500 to 16,750 Btu per pound, and in consequence of their excellent heating qualities and the scarcity of imported coal, they are marketed as far away as Buenos Aires at a price of go to 95 pesos, or approximately $22 to 23, per metric ton. In burning, the material swells and decomposes into solid, fluid, and gaseous fractions which burn violently though nonexplosively. Its combustibility has been responsible for disasters and virtually complete destruction at Mina La Es-peranza and Mina Santa Marta, and for minor mishaps elsewhere, as at Mina Escondida in August 1947.

The Pea Ridge iron ore deposit near Sullivan, Missouri, is a dike-like mass of magnetite enclosed in Precambrian porphyries. The ore body tops at the Precambrian surface at a depth of 1300 feet below the present surface and extends to an unknown depth. It dips nearly vertically, intersecting the dip and strike of the enclosing porphyries at an extremely sharp angle. Faulting, both pre- and post-ore, appears to be of minor consequence, and present knowledge indicates that no preferred structural conditions existed prior to emplacement. The ore body is composed of magnetite with specular hematite, quartz, apatite, and pyrite occurring as accessory primary minerals. Specular hematite in appreciable quantities occurs on parts of the cap and the footwall of the ore body. Fresh porphyry breccia is enclosed in the magnetite along the hanging wall and in the western portion of the ore body. Hanging-wall quartz-amphibole and footwall quartz-hematite occur as replacements of certain porphyries. Further alteration has caused sericitization of parts of these zones. The ore deposit is interpreted as having been formed essentially by a single injection of a magmatic differentiate with hydrothermal end phases forming the quartz-amphibole and quartz-hematite portions of the deposit.

Four vertical boreholes in the vicinity of an electrical heater simulating a canister of nuclear waste in a granitic rock mass have been logged with an acoustic borehole sonde before and after thirteen months' heating. Excellent control of the structural geology and fractures present in the rock mass was provided by the considerable amount of oriented core recovered from the four boreholes used for acoustic logging and the large number of others used for a variety of rock mechanics instrumentation. Compressional and shear-wave velocities were measured as a function of stress on some twenty core samples, water-saturated and dry, which were recovered from the four acoustic logging boreholes. Further control was provided by a cross- hole acoustic monitoring program conducted before, during and after heating between the same four boreholes, and by measurements of acoustic velocities in an isolated block of granite in the same heater drift, which was subjected to an increase in temperature and to changes in uniaxial stress. It is concluded from the acoustic logging tests, taken in conjunction with the acoustic cross-hole and heated block experiments, that acoustic techniques: 1. Provide a means for locating and delineating systems of weakly- bonded or open fractures within the rock mass; 2. Provide a sensitive means for monitoring a rock mass for changes in moisture content or structural damage to the rock fabric induced by thermal or mechanical loading; 3. Together with the rock bulk density yield the elastic constants of the rock mass.

During several experimental programs conducted at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy, Technical University, Aachen, whisker formation was observed when iron ores were reduced at low as well as at high temperatures. Thus, in an attempt to find the reason for the volume change taking place during reduction, iron whisker growth was observed. Whisker growth appears to be one of the important reasons for the swelling of pellets. One set of experimental observations determined that when iron forms as needles rather than as a crust on the surface of oxide, the pellets became very porous. In related experiments, the beneficiation of finely disseminated iron ores, in which the metallic iron is separated from the gangue in granular or nodular form, was achieved by a reduction-concentration method. In this process, which is conducted at sufficiently high temperatures, oxide whisker growth, resulting from the formation of volatile suboxides and a gas transport mechanism, plays a vital role in the joint deposition of SiO, and iron from the vapor stage.

Broadly speaking, the year 1934, one of the most active in the history of the Coast, has been both disappointing and revealing. Of the 18 new oil-producing areas, only two have shown the qualities of a first class oil field. Many of the new areas are discouraging for the horizons exploited, because of close association of gas and salt water, and the absence of any appreciable oil zone. In spite of amply fulfilling the expectations of drilling and geophysical development, the year has fallen far short of the results that normally should be expected from such a campaign. In 1934, the Cockfield zone has been disappointing because its exploration down the dip from the Conroe and Tom Ball fields revealed only such distillate fields as Splendora, Eureka, and the great gas-sand thickness at Katy. The zone proved good at Raccoon Bend. Newer Oligocene and Frio fields in Texas, with the exception of Hastings, were also disappointing, as Van Vleck arid Old Ocean attest. The discovery at Dickinson is not startling. The development of Hastings, Tom Ball, Dickinson and the deep zone at Raccoon Bend will be slow. A new strip of prospective territory of minor importance lying inland from the Conroe trend was opened by the Kittrell discovery. During the year 206 unproductive wildcats were drilled on the Texas Coast, compared with 207 during 1933 and 141 during 1932. During 1934, there were 835 oil and gas wells and 229 dry holes drilled in proved fields, in contrast with 1100 in 1933 and 512 in 1932. The past year's production was actually 60,868,260 bbl., or 2,020,764 bbl. less than in 1933. The present annual rate of Texas Gulf Coast production is about 61 million barrels per year. The daily Texas Coast production decreased 5537 bbl., or 3.2 per cent, during the year. The total daily production at the end of the year was 173,598 bbl. Eighteen wildcats opened up new oil and gas pools during 1934, so that there are now 78 active pools and 3753 producing oil wells. The production of the average well is 45 bbl. per day. The price of crude oil was almost uniform in 1934,

British Columbia is enjoying a period of sustained high-level activity in all aspects and sectors of its mining industry. The total value of mineral production for 1962 was in excess of $229 million. This was the greatest total value attained for any year to date, exceeding the previous record year of 1956 by more than $40 million. It appears reasonable to expect that value of production for 1963, stimulated by increased production attained during the year, and by improved metal prices for some of the major products, will be substantially in excess of that recorded for 1962. Elsewhere in this issue appears a detailed report of prospecting and exploration activity in the Province. For the purposes of this review it is sufficient to state that the level of prospecting and exploration activity during the past several years has been greater than at any previous time and that there does not appear to be any slackening in activity or interest.

In the Institute of Metals Division Lecture of 1940, E. H. Dix, J~.(I)~ discussed the acceleration of the rate of corrosion by high constant stresses. Experimental data obtained on this subject at the Aluminum Research Laboratories and a theory compatible with these facts were included in that lecture. The present paper contains data and ideas subsequently developed at the Aluminum Research Laboratories. Dix pointed out that in order for acceleration of corrosion by constant stress to occur: (1) There must exist in the alloy a susceptibility to selective corrosion along more or less continuous paths, as for in- stance at grain boundaries, and (2) There must exist a condition of high stress acting in a direction tending to pull the metal apart along these continuous paths. Acceleration of corrosion rate by stress is not confined to any one alloy system. Table I lists some of the metals and alloys and some of the corroding environments in which acceleration of corrosion by stress was sufficient to cause cracking (stress- corrosion cracking). THE oilfields in Illinois are located principally along the LaSalle anticline in the southeastern part of the state. The oil produced comes most largely from beds of Pennsylvanian and Mississippian age, but there is an increasing important production from deeper horizons, as will be noted under new development. The oil is largely of paraffin base, and has an average specific gravity of about 35° Baume. The rank of Illinois as an oil producer has dropped from third since 1913, when its production was exceeded only by that of California and Oklahoma, to eighth in 1923. This has been the result of failure to find new pools of considerable size to offset the declining production of the old wells and of the greatly increased production of some of the other states. The noteworthy features of petroleum production in Illinois during 1924 are: the low rate of decline for the state as a whole; the smaller percentage of dry holes; and the larger average initial yield of the new wells.

The selection of centrifugal pumps for mill discharge duty should be based on the total circuit concept. The practice of operating the mill circuit based on limitation of the pump can result in losses in one day which would offset the pump cost. Operating data from 25 grinding circuits have been reviewed and comparative results on added mill capacity have established advantages far beyond the less significant maintenance costs with increased circulating load and better cyclone operation. Mill discharge pumps should be selected on the following basis: i) Best available design for wear performance ii) Size to provide best economic life iii) Liner material best suited to circuit conditions Pump efficiency is a secondary consideration because power consumed by pumps is small compared to mill power input. Energy dissipated in mill pumps is contributing to comminution of ore.

The literature of milling is replete with papers devoted to the subject of ball milling, all of which no doubt have contributed in one way or another to progress in that art. In this paper reference will be made to only a few of the many authors, but the value of the contributions of all who have written on that subject is hereby acknowledged. With a few exceptions the efforts of most students of the subject have been devoted to laboratory investigations of principles. Davis1 was one of the first to report on plant-scale investigations and to present to mill men certain criteria for the guidance of ball-milling practices. His conclusions with respect to the significance of sizing analyses of classifier sands in their relation to the factors of mill speed and ball sizing are particularly referred to. Those conclusions were: 1. If the balls are large or the speed of the mill is high, crowding will appear at the finer sizes in the classifier sands. 2. If the balls are small or the speed is low, crowding will appear at the coarser sizes in the classifier sands. 3. The indications are that best efficiency is obtained when the screen analysis of the sands show a minimum crowding at any size. The last conclusion was qualified by the statement that it had not been proved conclusively. It is surprising, however, that the litera- ture of later years reveals little evidence that millmen have made any serious attempt to apply those criteria. This may, perhaps, be explained by the fact that the average plant-scale ball-milling problem presents so many variables that an investigation of any one of them encounters the problem of control of the others—a problem that often is unsurmountable in a small plant. In a large plant, in which there is a duplication of grinding units in parallel operation, opportunity may be afforded for determining the value of such criteria. Nevertheless, a study of published data from grinding circuits of both large and small plants suggests that either Davis' criteria have been tried and found inapplicable or have never been given consideration. For the purpose of testing Davis' conclusions and with improvement of ball-milling efficiency as the final objective, a test program was initiated in the concentrator of the New Cornelia branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation early in 1938. The practices of that plant have already been described.2 The fine-grinding units are arranged so that any one of eight units may be operated as a test unit and its results compared with those of the remaining units. All units receive similar feed from a common storage bin, in which the product of the fine-crushing plant is bedded by traveling tripper. The ball mills are all similar in size and operated at the same speeds, and are individually metered. The feeder conveyors of each unit are equipped with Merrick weightometers. On the basis of experience accumulated during the completion of some 150 gold/silver process development projects, general guidelines are presented for developing the most cost effective process for a specific project. Steps involved in process development for lode ore deposits generally include a review of pertinent background information on the ore deposit, sample procurement and preparation, sample characterization, study of concentration possibilities, investigation of leaching and metal recovery methods, economic evaluation of alternative processes, optimization of the selected process, a pilot plant program if warranted, and finally, process design and feasibility studies. Each of these steps is discussed, with emphasis on the relation between technology and economics.

DISPERSION strengthening has been studied in a number of metal-metal oxide systems. To date those pure metals available as fine particles (less than about 5 p) have received most of the attention whereas solid solution alloys, generally unavailable as fine powders, have not been examined in detail. The present work was undertaken as a preliminary study to evaluate combined effects of solid solution and dispersion strengthening. The technique used was that of dry mixing of elemental powders with the oxide, followed by a diffusion treatment to obtain the solid solution. The average particle size of the powders used was: Ni, 3.2 p (1nco B); Mo, 1.3 p (Fansteel Metallurgical Corp.); and y alumina, 0.027 \i (G. L. Cabot, Inc.). The particle size of the metal powders was determined by Fisher subsieve measurements while the size of the alumina was calculated from a surface area determination. Prior diffusion studies on small compacts pressed from mixtures of nickel and molybdenum powders with and without 7.5 vol pct A1203 indicated that diffusion was complete after sintering for 100 hr at 1800" , or 50 hr at 2250", or 20 hr at 2550° F. The progress of diffusion was followed by microstructural examination and micro-hardness measurements. Two observations made during the diffusion experiments were: 1) That diffusion proceeded faster in the presence of alumina, confirming similar findings by Seith and Loepman on "SAP'';4 2) That diffusion at temperatures above 1800°F resulted in coarsening of the alumina in agreement with results of other authors reporting on the growth of alumina in nickel above 1800"F. Similar experiments in the Ni-Cr system using 6 and 20 p Cr powders of 0.7 and 0.025 pct 0, respectively, did not result in significant solid solution formation even after long time exposures at 2550° F. It must be concluded that chromium oxide films around individual particles interfere with normal diffusion. A nickel alloy containing 5 wt pct Mo and 7.5 vol pct alumina was fabricated by dry mixing of powders, isostatically compacting at 30,000 psi, diffusing for 120 hr in dry hydrogen at 1800" F, and extruding at 1950"~ with a 30 to 1 reduction of area ratio. The resulting structure, presented in Fig. 1

"NAME…""Utah"" is derived from the name of the Indian tribe, variously spelled ""Yuta, “Ute"" ""Youta,"" ""Uta,"" ""Eutaw,"" and finally ""Utah."" It means ""in the tops of the mountains,"" or ""on the heights."" The state emblem is the ""Beehive,"" typical of industry. State nickname is ""Beehive State.""AREA…Utah is the tenth state in area. It contains 84,990 square miles, of which 2,806 miles are water. When admitted as a territory in 1850, Utah included all the area from the east line of California to the summit of the Rocky Mountains between the 37th and 42nd parallels, which embraced practically all of the present state of Nevada, all of western Colorado, part of Idaho and part of Wyoming, in addition to the present area of Utah.TOPOGRAPHY…Utah is generally mountainous, with several main ranges and also detached groups of mountains. The valleys are broad and level. The mean altitude of the state is 6,100 feet above sea level, which makes the state the third highest of the Union. The highest point in Utah is King's Peak (13,498) in the Uinta range. The lowest point is Beaverdam Creek (2,000) in Washington county.CLIMATE…The climate is diversified between mild temperate in the northern portion to semitropical in the southern portion. There are four distinct seasons. Snowfall is heavy at the greater altitudes and rare in the southern portion. Rainfall is moderate throughout the state. Extremes of heat and cold are unusual."

Geological investigation and research have contributed greatly in making industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. North Carolina contains a wide variety of industrial minerals and rock. Mica, feldspar, kaolin, halloysite, talc, pyrophyllite, silli-manite, and spodumene are used to illustrate the progress being made. IN a previous paper1 an attempt was made to indicate the importance of industrial minerals in North Carolina and the wide variety of such materials present. The present paper is concerned with geological investigation and research which have made industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. Geological mapping has gone through three stages in North Carolina during the present century. The first stage is represented by excellent reports of which Corundum and the Peridotites of Western North Carolina,2 Volume I, now a classic, is representative. In this report, a geologic map of the western third of the state is shown on a scale of 10 miles to the inch. The next stage is represented by folios" of the U. S. Geological Survey published between 1902 and 1932. Most of these contained 30 min quadrangle maps on a scale of 2 miles to the inch. The third step is represented by reports prepared during the past 10 years which contain geological maps4 on scales varying from 500 ft to 1 mile to the inch, while many mine maps have been prepared on scales varying from 20 to 150 ft to the inch. As the scale on which geological mapping has been done has decreased, the amount of information secured has increased. Pratt and Lewis did excellent work on the peridotites of western North Carolina, but their maps lacked details. Keith and others added
