The ordering reaction and its effect on dislocation awangements in alloys based on Mg3Cd has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. Ordering occurs by the growth of ordered domains until they impinge, thus producing an antiphase domain boundary (APB) network. In the disordered alloy, slip is confined to the basal plane while in the ordered condition slip occurs on the basal, prism, and pyramidal planes. Superdislocations have been identuied on these planes and their origin and expected spacings are discussed and compared with the observations. The APBs between the dislocation pairs have been resolved and have proved useful in the identification of superdislocations. Observed slip structures are related to the changes in mechanical properties produced by ordering. At high temperatures magnesium and cadmium form a continuous series of disordered hexagonal solid solutions. At lower temperatures three ordering reactions occur; two based on the compositions Mg3Cd and MgCd3 are transformations to DO19-type superlattices while alloys based on the composition MgCd transform to a B19 lattice. The ordering process in alloys near the composition Mg3Cd has been studied by several workers'-4 and it has been shown to be a first-order type transformation. The variation of mechanical properties with the degree of order and temperature have been reported in some detail by Stoloff and Davies.5 It was shown that the disordered alloy was stronger and less ductile than the ordered alloy, the differences being attributed to changes in the number of active slip planes and to the presence of short-range order in the disordered alloy. In this investigation the ordering reaction has been qualitatively followed by transmission electron microscopy. The effect of this ordering transformation on the dislocation arrangements in deformed specimens has been studied in some detail. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys were melted in a stainless-steel crucible under a flux and chill cast; both melting and casting were performed in an argon atmosphere. The ingots were hot-rolled and tensile specimens cut from the resultant strips. Some large-grained specimens were grown by the strain-anneal method. Heat treatment was carried out in inert atmosphere furnaces and in oil baths at the lower temperatures. Thin foils for transmission electron microscopy were produced by electropolishing in a cooled solution (temp = -40°C) containing 50 cu cm of nitric acid and 180 cu cm of methanol at a potential of 10 v. The ordering reaction was followed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray, and electrical resistivity measurements but this paper will be concerned chiefly with the electron-microscopy results. Much of the work described in this paper was performed on an alloy containing 26.10 at. pct Cd although two of the micrographs are taken from work on a 25.55 at. pct Cd alloy. RESULTS i) The Quenched Solid Solution. Specimens which were quenched from above the critical temperature showed diffuse superlattice reflections. sark-field analysis on these reflections failed to reveal the presence of ordered domains and thus the superlattice reflections were assumed to arise from regions of short-range order. Quenching from temperatures of 400" to 450°C results in the formation of dislocation loops and helical dislocations. Such defects have been observed and analyzed in detail in several hexagonal metals6-' and as the crystallography and interactions of such loops appear similar in this alloy they will not be reported in detail. THE accepted basis of comparisons between mills of different diameter is the percentage critical speed. [ ] In the following analysis capacity, T, is expressed in short tons per hour, tph, and power consumption, P, in kilowatts, kw. Accordingly power consumption per unit of capacity, Po, will be expressed in kilowatt hours per short ton, or kw-hr per ton. In all equations D refers to the inside diameter of the mill in feet and v to the peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute inside the liners. Comparison between separate mills must be based on equivalent grinding conditions, i.e., same feed, same size distribution of feed, same size distribution of product, and same percentage of solids. In addition, comparisons between separate rod mills must be based on the same rods, same type of liners, and same percentage rod load. Comparisons between separate ball mills presuppose the same balls, similar liners, and same relative ball load. The practical np-range through which the equations apply varies, being narrower for fine grinding in ball mills and wider for coarse crushing in rod mills.

From time to time since the initial installation of an experimental flotation section in 1940, Permanente Cement Co. has made efforts to beneficiate the low-grade limestone fraction which occurs in its deposits at Permanente, Calif. The encouraging results outlined in this article are the result of Permanente's latest effort. THE PERMANENTE LIMESTONE AND THE REASON FOR ITS BENEFICIATION The Permanente deposit is a sheet of Calera limestone over 700 ft thick lying within the Franciscan sediments of the San Francisco peninsula. Limestone suitable for cement manufacture underlies, overlies, and is interbedded with low-grade limestone and chert. Andesite intrusions are found as a secondary gangue. INTRODUCTION THE reaction of carbon in solid solution in a metal with the surface oxide film on many metals may be inferred from thermodynamic calculations for high vacua and high temperature conditions. Holm1 has recently shown that oxide films may be removed from ferrous materials by heating in a vacuum at high temperatures and that carbon is the essential element in the reaction. Considerable work has been described in the literature on the decarburization reaction. Several general references may be noted.2,3,4 However, the nature of the mechanism involved in the decarburization is not well understood. Our interest in this reaction resulted from many attempts to degas and to reduce by pure and dry hydrogen the surface oxides 0n strips of various types of chrome-nickel alloys. Some of the early experiments on the behavior of 13 pct chrome-iron in vacua of the order of 5 X 106 mm and at a temperature of 600°C have been reported.5 These experiments showed a slow reaction with the residual oxygen or water vapor in the system and no reaction with hydrogen. This is in accord with thermodynamic data which would lead to the prediction that it is extremely difficult to maintain a hydrogen atmosphere at 600°C pure enough to reduce Cr203 formed on the surface. The crystal structure of the superficial oxide film formed on 13 pct chrome iron and Nichrome V has been investigated in the thin film range by Gulbransen, Phelps and Hickman,6 and shown to be Cr203. It was surprising to us to note that when a specimen of Nichrome V containing approximately 80 pct nickel and 20 pct chromium was heated to 850°C in a high vacuum, the specimen' lost weight. The rate of weight loss was very temperature sensitive. A study of this reaction in vacua and in a hydrogen atmosphere is the subject of this communication. TYPE REACTIONS Let us consider the various reactions which may occur when a metal is heated in vacua, in a hydrogen atmosphere, or in an oxygen atmosphere. The number and kind of reactions will depend upon the chemical nature, of the metal, its alloying constituents and the location of the alloying constituents. The metals used in this study are chrome-nickel alloys of the heater type. They consist essentially of chromium, nickel and iron, small amounts of carbon, silicon and manganese and traces of zirconium, calcium, aluminum and magnesium. The trace elements are added to improve the lifetime and other characteristics of the alloy when used as a heater. The recovery properties of compression-deformed lithium fluoride single crystals were investigated as a function of prior strain, annealing time, and annealing temperature. The recovery process was studied by observation of etch pits and birefringence stress patterns. The recovery process involved first a redistribution of the dislocations and then a decrease in their number. Only by annealing at high temperatures after small strains (<0.02 in. per in.) was it possible to obtain complete recovery of mechanical properties. LITHIUM fluoride affords unusual opportunities to extend the knowledge of deformation mechanisms of nonmetallic crystalline compounds. Single crystals of high purity are readily available. These crystals deform by slip on the (110) <110> system.&apos; Unlike those of several other ionic crystals, the stress-strain curves of annealed lithium fluoride are reproducible.2 Dislocations generated in the crystals during deformation can be revealed by etch pits.3 This fact makes possible more detailed studies of mechanisms than is usually the case with metals. Also, because lithium fluoride is transparent, it is possible to follow the recovery process with birefringence stress patterns. It has been shown that with metals an increase in temperature increases the amount of recovery for a given time, and the amount of recovery increases with increasing time at the same temperature.4-6 The yield stress has also been shown to be dependent on the rate of cooling after annealing.&apos; Annealing germanium, a covalent-bond material, at high temperatures after deformation redistributes the dislocations and reduces their number. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the knowledge of recovery properties to an ionic crystal, lithium fluoride. The effect of strain, time, and temperature of recovery on the stress-strain curve was investigated. The recovery process was followed by observations of etch pits and birefringence stress patterns. LARGE deposits of titaniferous magnetite occur associated with anorthosite and gabbro in the Lake Sanford area, Essex County, New York. The ore, gabbro, and anorthosite show consanguineous relations. Anorthosite grades through gabbroic anorthosite into gabbro but is locally intruded by gabbro. Structural and petrographic evidence suggests that gabbro was differentiated from anorthosite by filter pressing. Field and laboratory study of ore occurrences indicates that an ore residuum concentrated in the gabbro through magmatic segregation by normal crystallization and flowage. Ore occurs as bands which grade into gabbro, and also as large masses which replace anorthosite. Ore in the gabbro is finer grained and richer in ilmenite than ore in anorthosite.

The use of blower fans and tubina- for auxiliary face ventilation is a somewhat controversial subject. Most authorities agree upon the advantages of this system over the maintenance of line brattice for dead-end ventilation. They also recognize the system&apos;s disadvantages. However, there is considerable disagreement as to the proper relation of the advantages to the disadvantages. It is the purpose of this report to present the opinions of four authorities of diversified occupation and permit the reader to form his own opinions on the subject. ORsErvers Carel Robinson is a mining engineer consultant of wide repute, who has a background of operating experience. Thomas G. Fear is a mine operator whose present position is that of chief engineer for the Hanna Coal Co. at St. Clairsville, Ohio. E. H. Denny is chief of the Coal Mine Inspection Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and is a very able engineer whose past experience well qualifies him to appraise this problem. Cloyd M. Smith, editor of the periodical Mechanization, is a ventilation consultant. For a number of years he was a member of the Mining Department of the University of Illinois and has studied mine ventilation for many years. SULPHUR has long been one of the banes of the steel manufacturer and often no effort and expense have been spared in order to reduce it to a small per cent. in the finished product. This condition is clue to a general conviction that in many cases where steels have failed in service, sulphur has been the cause. But there has been a growing feeling in recent years that the verdict against sulphur has been unnecessarily severe. In cases of segregation it was present in augmented amounts along with other impurities, but it had not caused the segregation. High sulphur in pig iron is caused by poor furnace conditions and the sulphur is merely one indication of an iron that has not been properly reduced. No amount of subsequent treatment under oxidizing conditions in the open-hearth furnace can remedy the defects, although the per cent. of sulphur may be considerably reduced. In other words, the causes of bad steel can frequently be traced back to bad pig iron, and sulphur is merely one indication that the pig iron is bad. The writer recently visited a steel plant where a mass of evidence had been accumulated which substantiated this fact, and the superintendent was .emphatic in stating that high sulphur was not harmful provided the steel was not otherwise poor due to insufficient reduction in the blast furnace. The presence of a moderate amount of sulphur is desirable from the standpoint of the man who machines the steel. The low-sulphur material drags and the production of a smooth surface is very difficult. A slight increase in sulphur enables the machinist to produce a smooth surface without difficulty. Since, therefore, such large quantities of steel are subjected to machining, it becomes highly important that the sulphur controversy should be settled, and if its presence is proved to be harmless the ban on it should be lifted.

The intent of this paper is to present the general strategy and method of implementation to achieve a "fast-track" mine development. The major objectives of a "fast-track or rapid development schedule are to minimize front-end development expenditures and to realize an early cash flow from operations. The Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corp. (HIMCO) is used as the working example to illustrate the development schedule. Borealis is a 2.9 kt/d (2,500 stpd) gold-silver heap leach operation near Hawthorne, NV.

THE increased demand for iron ore has necessitated a re-examination of ore-bearing lands on which the presence of water previously has indicated hazardous and expensive operating conditions. In view of the importance of iron ore production to the national economy and defense, the Ground Water Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the state of Michigan, began a study of mine drainage in the Iron River district in 1945, and later extended the work to the Marquette district. The purpose of these studies was to define the principles involved in the movement of surface and ground water toward the mined areas, with the hope that the information obtained in the research would lead to the development of methods of water control and to a reduction in the total mining costs. Not only are the direct costs of drainage increasing, but also the indirect operational costs of working a wet mine are becoming a larger proportion of the total mining costs. For some wet mines the direct costs of pumping and drainage may range from 35 to 40Ø per ton of ore produced, but the indirect costs due to handling wet ore and controlling the water may be five to ten times this amount. The methods of study were formulated as the work progressed, and inasmuch as they were the first large-scale studies of their kind, they should serve as a guide for the solution of similar problems in other mining areas. The Iron River district was chosen for a pilot study because in this district the longest records of mine pumpage and water-level observations were available, including, as they do, the records for the Homer mine of the M. A. Hanna Co., where pumping from surface wells began in 1930. The results of the first investigation by the Michigan Department of Conservation have already appeared." The first section of the report on a similar study of the Marquette district, which was started in 1948, will be published this year. Methods of Study In an effort to reduce the flow of water into the mine workings in the Iron River district, about 4500 gpm was pumped from the bedrock being mined and about 9000 gpm from the glacial overburden. In the Marquette district in the vicinity of Ishpeming and Negaunee, about 5000 gprn was pumped from the bedrock and about 4000 gpm was pumped from the glacial overburden. Where the water was pumped only from the bedrock, the rate of pumping ranged from a few hundred gallons per minute in the dry mines to many hundred gallons per minute in the wet mines. In each district, pumping from the overburden was localized on a few properties where costly pumping installations had been made and the expenditures for power had been large. In each district a comprehensive ground-water investigation was made of the whole area, involving the collection and interpretation of all the available data bearing on the source and quantity of water to be controlled. Although it is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the methods of making a ground-water investigation, it should be pointed out that a drainage study follows a pattern of engineering analysis that determines the occurrence, source, movement, disposal, and quantities of water involved. The investigation in the iron-mining districts of Michigan began with the construction of a map of the buried bedrock topography. Because the ground-water reservoirs occupy the low points in the bedrock basins, this map gives information concerning their areal extent, depth, shape, and degree of interconnection. The depth to water in the drillholes and wells indicates the altitude to which the ground-water reservoirs are filled, and the logs of the material penetrated in the drillholes and wells indicate the general character of the materials filling the reservoir. The slope of the ground-water surface indicates the direction of flow through the reservoir, the water movement being from the points of higher altitude to points of lower altitude. By analysis of the rise and fall of the ground-water levels in response to additions of water through recharge and to changes in the rate of discharge through pumped wells, estimates of the total quantity of water in storage and of the rate of flow through the reservoir

The work of Leon Guillet concerning the effect of nickel on the structural properties of brass is checked. The best value for the coefficient of equivalence t, that is, the amount of zinc replaced by 1 per cent. of nickel, is shown to be-1.1 per cent. The best hot- and cold-working nickel silvers, varying in nickel content between the limits of 4 and 18 per cent., are tabulated and plotted diagrammatically. Also, some data are given showing a comparison between the physical properties of a hot- and cold-working low copper-nickel silver, and a commercial cold-working nickel silver containing approximately 8 per cent. more copper. THIS investigation of low copper-nickel silvers was undertaken to check the work of Leon Guillet on special brasses and to determine, more accurately, the effect of the addition of nickel on the microstructure of the binary alloys of copper and zinc. It was hoped that the results could be successfully applied to the practical production of low copper-nickel silvers. To explain the results of his investigations on special brasses, Leon Guillet evolved his conception of "fictitious compositions." He states,1 in his general conclusions, that on the introduction of a small amount of a third metal to a copper-zinc alloy, it enters into solid solution with the normal constituents up to saturation, but by so doing it brings the ternary alloy into a state microscopically equivalent to a binary copper-zinc alloy of fictitious composition, and physically more nearly like the latter than the brass containing copper-zinc in the ratio actually present. The physical properties of the ternary alloy, when compared to the same properties of an actual brass of the fictitious composition, are modified by the natural properties of the third element. Beyond the point of saturation, a special constituent appears and the above generalization no longer holds.

IN THE southwestern Wisconsin zinc district, lying in Lafayette, Grant, and Iowa Counties, and the adjoining territory in northwestern Illinois, the orebodies are generally small, and are mined out in a few years. Many of the mines are developed with an expectation of five years or less of actual production. For this reason, as well as for considerations of economy, certain features in the development practice, which have been worked out with a view toward keeping the ratio of time required for, development to that occupied by actual production as small as possible, are of interest. ORGANIZATION The organization of a crew for, this work is as follows: Inasmuch as speed in sinking is desirable, the shaft crew comprises three shifts working 8 hr. each. In the smaller shafts, running up to 6 by 12 ft. (1.8 by 3.6 in.) in size, two men are employed on a shift; in larger shafts an additional man is usually employed. A mine foreman, or ground boss, has general control of the work of the three shifts. He is usually with the crew on the first and the early part of the second shifts, and plans the work to be done for the third shift when it comes on. His schedule, of course, is flexible and when pump changes, or other special conditions warrant, he, arranges his working time to suit the occasion. The surface crew for a sinking operation is made up of two hoistermen, each working 12-hr. shifts. Since the various operations in the shaft must be conducted in succession,. and not in combination, one with the other, separate attendance for hoisting and general plant is unnecessary. Drilling is done when no hoisting is necessary and vice versa. The hoisterman trams out and dumps the excavated material which the crew in the shaft is mucking, as a part of his regular hoisting work.

Coal reserve estimates are prepared using a simple equation: the product of area, bed thickness, density and recovery factors. Each of these elements involves a degree of risk based on certain assumptions. Reserve area, thickness and density rely on certain physical data whose accuracy, reliability and sufficiency may be problematical. Estimates of recovery factors for mining and coal preparation are often subjective. Most reserve estimates assume, sometimes incorrectly, that the subject reserves will be completely extracted. The principle that certain coal resources are reserves, if they can be considered economically recoverable at the time of determination, needs to be reexamined in the light of recent market cycles. Reserve estimating requires the exercise of judgments, the validity of which reflect the qualifications, experience and objectivity of the estimator.

THE high copper price during the war stimulated the capacity to produce far beyond a possible normal consumption. The curves in Fig. 1 show this. The line YZ indicates, what the world production and consumption of primary copper nor-mally would have been, had not the 3 war upset the rhythm of industry. Granting that the maximum world production of 3,150,000,000 lb. in 1917 was obtained by crowding both the equipment and the grade of ore mined, yet in many instances addi-tional capital was invested, upon which the producer will be driven to earn at least a reasonable interest. During the period of deflation, or C liquidation, which we have entered, the consumption of copper will nat-urally be below the normal. Fig. 1 shows the actual consumption ex-pressed-in per cent. of normal : 1919, 96 per cent.; 1920, 94 per cent.; 1921, 70 per cent. The copper industry, consequently, faces: (1) Potential over-production capacity; I (2) Diminished consumption. To deny the existence of these factors would be illogical. To minimize the menace of this potential producing capacity might lead to regret. All past attempts at artificial control have not proved very successful. Obviously the remedy is to increase, if possible, the consumption of copper to a point where these factors cease to be dangerous. In ultimate analysis, this means: Produce an article so cheap and so good that no one can afford to use substitutes. The problem can be solved by: (1) Re-ducing price; (2) Improving product offered.
