We have recently found that many lots of Zircaloy-2 and -4 tubing tested in tension deform to cross section shapes that are "polyhedral" rather than circular. The noncircular cross sections seem to result from a circumferential variation in plastic proper -ties and, therefore, in texture. We examined the diffracted X-ray intensity from (OOOl), {1010), {ll20}, and {1011} planes parallel to the tubing surface around the entire circumference. Tubing that deformed to a circular cross section showed <5 pct variation in diffraction intensity around the circumference from any of these planes. Greater intensity variations were found for all the tubing materials that developed non-circular cross sections during deformation. In each instance the number of intensity maxima and minima was consistent with the number of sides of the &apos;polyhedral" cross section. THE effects of crystallographic texture on the mechanical properties of zirconium, zirconium alloys, and other anisotropic hexagonal materials such as titanium and hafnium have been intensively studied. If the natural crystallographic anisotropy of these materials could be controlled by selected fabrication operations, a material could be produced with a texture, or preferred orientation, in which the maximum strength directions are in the stress directions of the structure. The permissible stress levels of the structure could then be increased. Rittenhouse and Pickle-simerl have shown that highly textured Zircaloy-2 plate can vary from 52,000 to 70,000 psi in tensile yield and from 62,700 to 122,000 psi in compressive yield strengths as a function of specimen orientation. Similar texture effects have been observed in Zircaloy tubing, whose mechanical properties differ depending upon whether the tubing has basal poles predominantly radial or tangential and upon the mode of testing. These same texture effects might be troublesome if the texture in the tubing is not uniform around the tube walls. This paper is concerned with the effects of nonuniform texture on the strain behavior of commercial Zircaloy tubing. BACKGROUND Previously, various lots of commercial Zircaloy tubing were tested under selected stress conditions as part of a program to determine the four quadrants of the yield locus. One of the testing procedures was uniaxial tension and it is the influence of texture variations on the tensile deformation behavior of the tubing that is of interest here. The effect of texture on the strain behavior in tubing is very apparent from a uni-axial tensile test.2 This behavior is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1 for three different tubing textures: 1) basal poles predominantly in the radial direction; 2) basal poles predominantly in the tangential direction, and 3) basal poles equally distributed between the radial and tangential directions. In the first example most of the grains are oriented for prism slip to operate to allow axial lengthening and diametral reduction of the tube. Reduction in wall thickness requires {1122} twinning, a more difficult operation than slip.* In the second example, the texture is such that *The singleCrystal analogy will be used quite often in this paper when strong texturesare being discussed. Diametral reduction requires twinning and again should be more difficult to accomplish. A specimen with basal poles equally distributed between the radial and tangential directions should exhibit about equal diametral and wall strains.* Table I shows the *Diametral strain is accomplished by a combination of circumferential and longitudinal strains. The first tube has a texture with basal poles equally distributed between the radial and the tangential directions. The ratio of true thickness strain to true diametral strain is almost unity. The second tube has a predominantly radial basal pole texture and it is apparent that most of the total strain has occurred by diameter reduction, just as one would predict. There is over three times as much diametral strain as thickness strain. RESULTS We found that specimens from certain lots of commercially fabricated tubing did not retain round cross sections during uniaxial testing. Instead, the speci-

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SH) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

The Atlanta mine is located in east-central Nevada, approximately 360 km (225 miles) from Las Vegas. It lies in Lincoln County, 116 km (72 miles) south of Ely and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Pioche. The property is currently operated by the Standard Slag Co. under a joint venture agreement with Bobcat Properties Inc, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Operations began in May 1975, and the mill is currently processing 109 000 to 122 500 t/y (120,000 to 135,000 stpy) of gold- and silver-bearing ore. Open-pit mining takes place in a breccia zone that occurs between Ordovician limestones and dolomites on the footwall and Tertiary rhyolites on the hanging wall. The quartz breccia ore is among the most abrasive in the world-shovel teeth must be replaced every week, 19-mm-thick (3/4-in.) steel chutes last about a month.

Galvanic contact, occurring between electrically conducting minerals in flotation pulps, may affect the nature of mineral surfaces and influence their floatabilities. Rest potential and galvanic current measurements were made on an electrode combination of pyrite and pyrrhotite under nitrogen, air and oxygen aeration conditions. The results were correlated with their oxygen-consuming characteris- tics and flotation behaviors. The galvanic contact improved the floatability of pyrrhotite, but adversely affected that of pyrite. Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the formation of hydroxide or oxide and sulfate species of iron on pyrrhotite decreased, whereas that on pyrite increased when these minerals were held in contact. An electro- chemical mechanism was proposed for the observed behaviors.

A fine lamellar structure with interlamellar spacings ranging from 0.I to 3.7 was Woduced by high-speed directional solidification and used to study the interaction of dislocations with an array of bimetallic bound-am.es. The tensile flow properties were measured at elevated temperatures and the results interpreted in terms of an image force model. As the width of the plates decreases the strength increases according to a Hall-Petch relation, suggesting pile -ups. Considerable strengthening was also observed at elevated temperatures. In recent years composites containing a strong but brittle phase and a ductile but weak phase have been studied extensively in the search for a high-strength material with adequate ductility.&apos; However, the strength of these composites has been limited to a volumetric average of the strengths of the component phases. In this paper we will show that a composite made by directional solidification of a Cu-Ag eutectic has strength properties that substantially exceed the strength of either of the metals in the composite, and an explanation for this increased strength will be presented. The Cu-Ag eutectic is a near ideal material to study for several reasons. The eutectic structure is made up of alternate plates of silver-rich and copper-rich phases with the same crystal structure.2&apos;3 In addition, the mechanical and elastic properties of silver4 and copper5 are known over a wide range of temperatures and the eutectic microstructure is stable to nearly the melting point.6&apos;7 Therefore, the properties of the eu-tectic are readily comparable to various theories involving the mechanical properties of copper and silver. The experiments consisted of producing directionally solidified Ag-Cu eutectic material, determining the structure and performing tensile tests at different temperatures and strain rates. EXPERIMENTAL A) Solidification and structure. A cylindrical ingot 2.2 cm in diam and 15 cm long was prepared from 99.999 pct pure materials and cast in argon. The ingot was placed in an alumina crucible and was direc-tionally solidified at 7 x 10"4 cm per sec in a Bridg-man apparatus in argon. Metallographic examination at both ends and along the length of the ingot showed a uniform structure that consisted of fine alternate plates of silver- and copper-rich phases. The plates were aligned parallel to the growth direction, as shown in the longitudinal section, Fig. 1, and were in small randomly oriented domains of parallel plates as viewed in a transverse section, Fig. 2. Four smaller ingots 0.175 in. in diam were solidified at speeds of 2Xlo-&apos;, 4.4 xlo-&apos;, 4.4 x 10-3, and4.4x10-4 cm per sec to produce a range of lamellar spacings. HIGH explosives, particularly nitroglycerin, have been used in torpedoes for the purpose of shooting oil and gas wells for more than 60 years. The early history of the oil industry in Pennsylvania is not clear as to who actually torpedoed the first well, although in 1865 the Roberts Torpedo Co. procured a patent covering the process. Gunpowder was first used, although nitroglycerin was substituted shortly afterwards. Wells are shot for the purpose of increasing the flow of oil and gas A shot-hole in the producing horizon, with its contributory fissures and fractures, increases the area of and stimulates drainage into the hole. The shot-hole also acts as a collecting basin from which the oil is pumped. As a rule, hard or close-grained sands or limes are shot, other more or less porous and soft formations usually do not require shooting. and might be injured by blasting. Shooting is also resorted to in mechanical trouble such as straightening crooked holes, sidetracking pipe or tools, and for severing frozen strings of casing or drill pipe. Explosives arc also used sometimes to extinguish oil or gas-well fires although that work, which involves unusual conditions and methods, does not properly come within the classification of oil-well shooting. Some Factors to Be Considered in Shooting Wells Although nitroglycerin has been used extensively for more than half a century in shooting oil and gas wells, there is still a great deal of uncertainty as to the proper method of shooting or the amount of explosive required to produce best results in a particular formation. The possibility of shooting unproductive or cavey formations above or below the productive horizons, shooting into lower water, destroying casing seats, and the splitting or collapsing of casing strings, are factors that require consideration. The engineering departments of a number of the larger oil companies are making a study of methods of shooting, and the amounts of liquid nitroglycerin or other explosives required in shooting various productive

IN an article on magnesium and its alloys, Gann and Winston1 stated that manganese has a limited solubility in the liquid state. W. Schmidt2 showed a diagram according to Joseph Ruhrmann indicating that the solubility of manganese in liquid magnesium falls from about 2.65 per cent at 790°C. to about 0.5 per cent at 695°C. The curve was extrapolated to show zero solubility at the melting point of pure magnesium (Fig. I): This work suggested that at the lowest manganese contents it was not possible to detect either a eutectic or the formation of a solid solution, so that manganese was stated to be present in the structure as large individual crystals. Two years after the presentation of these results, Gann3 brought evidence to show that some manganese is capable of dissolving to form a solid solution, any excess of manganese present then assuming chiefly the form of small blue-gray particles scattered throughout the primary magnesium crystals, occasionally in clusters but seldom at the boundaries. He presented micrographs of cast alloys containing o.1, 0.4 and 1.0 per cent manganese that show a small amount of coring around the individual particles due to solid solution, and indicate that the location of the manganese particles is closely associated with the original dendritic structure of the primary crystallization. He also pointed out that the amount of manganese that can be dissolved in magnesium depends on the amount of other alloying elements present, the effect of the second alloying element being to decrease the amount of manganese retained in the alloy. E. Schmid and G. Siebe14 have determined the solid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature by means of precision X-ray diffraction measurements. They found that the solubility is 3.4 per cent at 645°C and decreases to practically zero at 200°C. It is apparent that the X-ray diffraction measurements of Schmid and Siebel are not in agreement with the results of Ruhrmann as presented by Schmidt. This disagreement, and also the lack of data on magnesium-aluminum-manganese and magnesium-zinc-manganese systems, led the author to the present investigation, to determine accurately the liquid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method for making solubility determinations consists of saturating the molten magnesium or the alloys with manganese at various temperatures and analyzing the dip samples taken from these melts. Melting is carried out in a cylindrical steel pot heated by an electric resistance furnace. The pot had a metallic outside coating to protect the steel against oxidation, and a graphite inside lining to prevent the contamination of the melt by prolonged contact with iron. The inside diameter of the pot was 4 in. and the depth 12 inches.

I. GENERAL DISTRIBUTIONS APPEARANCE, AND RELATIONS MINING in Butte has seldom encountered covellite in commercial quantities. The notable occurrences, extending vertically and laterally perhaps several hundred feet, presented scattered, bladed lenses of this mineral in a matrix of quartz, pyrite, enargite, bornite, and chalcocite. But under the microscope covellite is seen to be widespread in the Butte ores, though in such small quantity that megascopic examination will not discover it. In early mining operations covellite was found in the Gray Rock vein, a member of the Blue vein system. As described by Sales,1 it persisted as an occasional ore mineral, associated with quartz, pyrite, tetrahedrite, bornite, chalcocite, and minor amounts of sphalerite, from the 700-ft. to the 1,200-ft. level of the East Gray Rock and Diamond mines. From variation in Young&apos;s modulus and Vicker&apos;s hardness during GPl zone formation in A1-2 at. pct Cu the following was observed: 1) the presence of grain boundaries does not have any perceptible? effect on the aging reaction; 2) the modulus charge is orientation dependent; 3) the activation energy for zone growth is confirmed to be 11 * 1 kcal per mole; 4) reaging after reversion is preceded by an incubation time that varies with temperature. An analysis is applied to the present data and to data of other workers and kinetic laws dependent on the quenching rate are determined. TUNGSTEN incandescent lamp filaments possess a typical structure of elongated crystals generated upon heating the silica-alumina doped wire rapidly to 2200°C or above.&apos; It is known that these very long grains exhibit a preferred orientation, but there is disagreement in the literature about the direction. Rosi,2 and later Rieck; reported that the <135> direction of the large grains in doped wire tends to be parallel to the wire axis, but other investigators have reported that <110> is the preferred direction. Some further investigation of the orientations of large grains in tungsten wire is reported in the following. In the first series of experiments, 6-in. lengths of wire were heated rapidly in a bell jar. Current was passed through the wires and within 15 sec the wires had reached the grain coarsening temperature. 2 min was the annealing time. Wires were heated in hydrogen, nitrogen, and vacuum. Later, wires were heated in an evacuated tube furnace in which the tube was brought from 1000°C to the operating temperature within 25 sec and held 5 min at temperature. Temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer. After heating, the wires were electro polished and etched, and the orientations of the large grains determined by the Laue back-reflection technique. Most of the experiments were carried out on a single spool of 5-mil silica-alumina doped wire, but a few tests were made with 5-mil thoriated tungsten wire and 10-mil undoped wire. 5-mil silica-alumina doped wires were reduced to smaller diameters by electropolishing for one series of experiments. Orientations of the large grains in silica-alumina doped wire heated in various atmospheres are presented in Figs. 1 and 2 as plots of the direction of the wire axis relative to the cube axes of the crystals. For most of the conditions studied, the preferred orientation cannot be described as a single direction, but the points might be said to group themselves about the arc passing through <110> and <113>. This arc is the trace of the (211) planes and contains the <135> and <124 as well as <011> directions previously observed by other investigators. The preferred orientation of large crystals in silica-alumina doped tungsten wire might be most generally described, therefore, by stating that a (211 ) tends to be parallel to the wire axis. This is true also for wires reduced in diameter by etching and furnace heated, Fig. 2, i.e., the recrystallization texture is apparently unchanged upon removal of the outer layers and substantially independent of the temperature gradient within the wire.

The relative concentration of 1" at grain boundaries in controlled orientation bicrystals has been examined by autoradiographic techniques, and by activity measurements of grain boundary surfaces exposed by preferential ,melting. The autoradio-graphs indicate that thallium is concentrated at grain boundaries in as-grown bicrystals, but not in zcell-annealed bicrystals. They also indicate that the solute concentration and the distribution on as-grown bicrystal surfaces are markedly different than that of the bulk material. The boundary surface measurements are in agreement with the autovadiographic evidence. On the basis of these measurements, as-grown bicrystals containing approximately 100 ppm of Tl, solidified at rates between 5 and 30 cm per hr and with tilt boundaries greater than 10 deg, exhibited grain boundary segregation equivalent to roughly 10 atomic planes of pure solute. Higher solute concentrations (equivalent to 140 atomic planes of pure solute) were obtained in bicrystals solidified slowly (0.6 cm per hr); slightly higher values were obtained in specimens containing a large angle nantilt boundary. Annealing for various times over a range of temperatures eliminated grain boundary segregation within the experimental uncertainty of the results (equivalent to 1 atomic Plane of pure thallium at the boundary). The results for the as-grown bicrystals can be qualitatively accounted for by assuming the presence of a groove on the solid-1iq;id interface, at the grain boundary. SOLUTE segregation at grain boundaries may be considered in two parts, namely, nonequilibrium segregation associated with the solidification process, and equilibrium segregation in fully annealed materials.&apos; There is much indirect evidence for nonequilibrium segregation, based on preferential etching at grain boundaries and the mechanical properties of as-cast alloys. In addition, some direct observations have been reported in which radioactive tracers were used as solute additions and segregation detected at the grain boundaries by autoradiographic techniques. However, there is little detailed quantitative data on solute concentrations related to grain boundaries, particularly for different freezing conditions and grain boundary configurations. Equilibrium segregation at grain boundaries has been considered both theoretically and experimentally. cean&apos; has made an estimate of the maximum equilibrium solute concentration that might be expected at a grain boundary, based on the lattice distortions in the boundary region. He arrived at a concentration which was equivalent t a monatomic layer of pure solute. A similar value, based on thermodynamic arguments, was calculated by Cahn and Hilliard for the segregation of phosphorus in iron. Experimentally, much higher values of solute concentration at grain boundaries have been reported recently by both Inman and iler&apos; for phosphorus in iron, and Ainslie et 1.&apos; for sulfur in iron. They observed concentrations equivalent to as much as 20 to 100 atomic layers of pure solute at the grain boundaries. However, in both cases it was shown that the observed segregation was not due solely to equilibrium segregation at the grain boundary. In the former case, precipitation effectss due to trace impurities in the material were believed to account for the large amount of solute present at the grain boundary. In the latter case it was shown that a high density of dislocations in the boundary region could provide a large number of additional sites for solute atoms, other than at the grain boundary. Thomas and chalmera have reported on the equilibrium segregation of po210 in grain boundaries of Pb-5 pct Bi alloys. Using autoradiographic techniques, they observed a concentration of polonium along the boundary trace on the surface of annealed bicrystal specimens grown from the melt. The concentration only appeared after annealing, and varied with boundary angle, increasing as the boundary angle increased. Their conclusions have been questioned by Ward," who pointed out that the segregation they observed along the boundary trace was much too wide to be compatible with the usual concepts of the thickness of a grain boundary of several lattice spacings.
