The cadmium-uranium system was studied by thermal, metallographic, X-7-ay and sampling techniques; special emphasis was placed on the establishment of the liquidus lines, The single inter metallic phase, identified as the compound UCd11 melts peritectically at 473°C to form a-umnium and melt containing 2.5 wt pct uranium. The cadmium-rich eutectic (0.07 wt pct uranium) freezes at 320.6°C. Solid solubilities in uraizium and cadmium appear to be negligible. Between 473°C and 600°C the liquidus line is retograde. NO publication relating to the cadmium-uranium phase diagram was found in the literature. The establishment of this diagram was of considerable interest to us because of a possible application of the system to the pyrometallurgical reprocessing of nuclear fuels. Analysis of liquid samples, metallographic examination, thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis were used to establish the phase diagram from about 300° to 670°C. Particular emphasis was placed on the establishment of the liquidus lines. The same system was concurrently studied in this laboratory by the galvanic cell method.' Both studies benefited from a continual interchange of information. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Stick cadmium (99.95 pct Cd, American Smelting and Refining Co.) contained 140 ppm lead as the major impurity. Reactor grade uranium (99.9 pct U, National Lead Co.) was most often used in the form of 20-meshspheres. This form was particularly suitable because it does not oxidize as readily as finer powder. The liquidus lines were determined by chemical analysis of filtered samples of the saturated melts. The liquid sampling technique is described elsewhere2 alumina crucibles (Morganite Triangle RR), tantalum stirring rods, tantalum thermocouple protecthecadmiumtion tubes, Vycor or Pyrex sampling tubes, and grades 60 or 80 porous graphite filters were used. Uranium dissolves in liquid cadmium rather slowly. In order to achieve saturation of the melts it was necessary to modify the procedure of Ref. 2 by the use of more vigorous stirring and longer holding periods (at least 3 hr) at each sampling temperature. The samples were analyzed for uranium by spectro-photometry (dibenzoyl methane method) or by polar- ography. The analyses are estimated to be accurate to 2 pct. Thermal analysis was performed on alloys contained in Morganite alumina crucibles in helium atmospheres. Standard techniques were employed; heating and cooling rates were about 1°C per min. For the determination of the peritectic temperature, Cd-10 pct U charges were first held for at least 50 hr at temperatures in the range 435° to 460°C to form substantial amounts of the intermediate phase. For the determination of the effect of cadmium on the a-p transformation temperature of uranium, charges of Cd-25 pct U (-140+100 mesh uranium spheres) were first held near the transformation temperature, with stirring, to promote solution of cadmium in the solid uranium. The holding times and temperatures for these treatments were 18 hr at 680°C for the cooling run and 28 hr at 630°C for the heating run. Alloy specimens for X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of the intermediate phase were prepared in sealed, helium-filled Vycor or Pyrex tubes. Ingots from solubility runs and thermal analysis experiments also were examined metallographically. Crystals of the intermediate phase were recovered from certain cadmium-rich alloys by selective dissolution of the matrix in 20 pct ammonium nitrate solution at room temperature. Temperatures were measured with calibrated Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples to an estimated accuracy of 0.3°C. However, the depression of the freezing point of cadmium at the eutectic is estimated to be accurate to 0.05°C because a special calibration of the thermocouple was made in place in the equipment with pure cadmium just prior to the measurement. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The results of this study were used to construct the cadmium-uranium phase diagram shown in Fig. 1. This diagram is relatively simple; it is characterized by a single intermediate phase, 6 (UCd11), which decomposes peritectically, and which forms a eutectic system with cadmium. The solid solubilities in the terminal phases appear to be negligible. An unusual feature of the diagram is the retrograde slope of the liquidus line above the peritectic temperature. The Liquidus Lines. The liquidus lines above and below the peritectic temperature are based on three separate solubility experiments. The data are shown in Fig. 1 and are given in Table I. It is apparent from the figure that the solubility data obtained by the approach to saturation from higher temperatures fall on substantially the same lines as those obtained

This paper deals with the responsibilities of an operating geologists and the relationship of operations to exploration. It should be of interest to those soon to enter the profession, those new to mining geology and as a review to more experienced geologists. Subjects discussed include detailed geologic mapping, sampling, core logging, assaying, selection of proper map scale, posting geological and assay data, section preparation, identification of ore controls, delineation of development drill targets and geologic hazards, models and the very important topic of salesmanship. Methods and ideas, proven valid in vein, pyrometasomatic replacement and porphyry copper deposits are presented. Hopefully, these will smooth the path for new members of our profession.

An investigation has been made of 500 samples of universal and sheared plates of basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steel manufactured by the Pottstown Iron Company, the carbon-limits being 0.07 to 0.18 per cent. Through the courtesy of Mr. W. H. Morris, President, I am able to lag before the Institute the results of these tests. The samples tested were all taken from the finished material, and the chemical determinations were made on drillings from the broken test-pieces, which were sent to the chemist without giving him the heat-numbers. The results are such as to encourage me to keep on with the work, and, if possible, to have it carried out on other steels. It is kith this view that I now offer my tables in their incomplete form. My first table mas constructed by grouping the tests according to chemical analysis in various. ways, and making a rough tabulated statement, from which the ultimate strengths were worked out and carefully compared with the actual results of the tension-tests. From data thus obtained, one table after another was worked out, and by this method of "cutting and trying" I finally arrived at the results which I now present in Table I. (p. 771). I do not claim absolute accuracy, but my approximations have proved to be so close that the figures are practical data for current use at the works. The indications are that a pure iron, without carbon, phosphorus, manganese, or silicon, if it could be obtained, would give 38,000 pounds ultimate strength. This is assumed as a base, and to it is added the effect of each of the above elements, as explained below. The upper part of Table I. gives the ultimate strength due to carbon and phosphorus, and is the same for both basic Bessemer and basic open-hearth steels. The lower part gives the increase in ultimate strength due to manganese. By adding this to the amount obtained from the upper part, we have the ultimate strength of basic Bessemer

BOTANICAL methods of prospecting for metalliferous ores are based on the premise that deposits at depth may be reflected chemically in surface vegetation. For the past several years, on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission, the U. S. Geological Survey has investigated on the Colorado Plateau the application of botanical methods to uranium prospecting. Results suggest that orebodies may be found under a considerable cover of barren sandstone through the absorption of uranium and associated trace elements by plants growing at the ground surface. Plant physiologists have demonstrated that uranium is a necessary nutrient for plant growth and therefore is present in all plants.' The amount present is small but measurable. The absorption of uranium by plants growing over ore deposits forms the basis, therefore, for a method of prospecting by plant analysis.

Ernest R.. WOAKES, Cana, Colombia: The allusion in this paper, under the heading " Mining on the Isthmus," to the Espiritu Santo mine at Cana is neither according to fact nor worthy of the most interesting and able summary of the mining districts of Colombia contained in the remainder of the paper. The following remark is certainly open to contention: "The most widely-known mine of this department is the Espiritu Santo, at Cana, a quartz-mine opened up in 1680 and abandoned in 1727 on account of the attacks of the Cana Indians. This mine undoubtedly produced great quantities of gold, although many of the accounts given of its ancient richness are probably exaggerated. In 1884 it was rediscovered and reopened by the Darien Gold Mining Company, and under the able management of Mr. Thomas H. Leggett, now prominent in South African mining circles, produced for a time successful results ; but later the veins became pockety and the output unsatisfactory." The mine here referred to, though situated at Cana, was not the Espiritu Santo mine, and was closed down in 1892. Mr. Leggett, however, ran ten stamps on the ore from it for some two or three months in the year 1890, when he left Colombia. The Espiritu Santo mine was not reopened by the Darien Gold Mining Company until the year 1894. For the last three years the ore from the old Spanish workings of this mine has been yielding in the mill 1 ounce to the ton, and has served to keep the mine going whilst extensive development-works have been

THE results of shock-loading studies on copper were reported several years ago by smith. In his experiments, Smith found that there was a correlation between the shock direction and the orientation of twins which the shock produced. By using free-surface-type shots in which the free surface of the specimen was not normal to the shock direction, he showed conclusively that twinning of copper in impulsive loading was caused by the rarefaction wave. Similar tests with iron, however, showed that it twinned during compression. More recent studies of iron2 and on Fe-Si single crystals3 have shown that twinning can be suppressed in these materials by shock loading at pressures high enough so that the velocity of the shock wave exceeds the elastic-wave velocity. From these observations, it appeared that twinning was caused by the shear stresses present in the zone undergoing adjustment from one-dimensional to three-dimensional loading. At high pressures, such a zone becomes so thin that there is insufficient time for the relatively ordered motion of atoms involved in twinning to occur. Twinning in copper, therefore, cannot be produced by a single compressive shock wave because resolved shear stress large enough to create twins exists only for a very short time (0.01 psec or less) before the pressure increases suddenly and loading becomes essentially hydrostatic. (A typical pressure vs time record for a copper shot, illustrating the short rise time of the compression wave, is shown in Fig. 1.) If, on the other hand, a second shock wave can be created in a precompressed sample, then the new elastic limit is several kilobars,4 and a resolved shear stress sufficient to cause twinning should be maintained for an adequate time period (0.1 psec or more). This experimental situation can, in fact, be realized. The experimental arrangement used to do so is shown in Fig. 2. By utilizing the pressure transformation in Fe-V alloys, it was possible to shock-load the copper in compression while the copper was already precompressed. In the first test, an 8 wt pct V-Fe sample was used as a driver for loading the copper, and the copper was exposed to the following series of compressive shocks: 1) an elastic wave of about 8 kbars, which is usually ignored in shock studies; 2) the pressure transformation wave for the driver of 200 kbars; and 3) the driving shock wave of 270 kbars pressure. Metallurgical determination of the angular twin distribution, shown in Fig. 3, with respect to the shock direction and the shock rarefaction direction (which was 23 deg from the shock direction) showed that twinning took place

A simple reproducible method was developed for determining the ignition temperatures of magnesium and magnesium alloys and by this method magnesium and over 100 magnesium alloys were measured. The ignition temperature of magnesium was determined in O2-SO2, O2-N2 mixtures and in O2 from 0.166 to 10 atm pressure. The ignition temperature of magnesium is generally lowered by alloying and increased by an increase in oxygen pressure. WITH the expanded use of magnesium alloys in industry, ignition temperatures are of considerable importance, especially in heat treating and for service at elevated temperatures. Magnesium alloys exhibit a relatively slow linear oxidation rate up to temperatures near the melting point.' At some critical temperature the rate of oxidation becomes extremely rapid. This high rate of oxidation is accompanied by the emission of light and additional characteristics suggesting a flame. The literature concerning the ignition temperatures of magnesium and magnesium alloys is relatively incomplete and the values reported by various authors are not in agreement. The most probable reasons for this are: 1—The absence of a suitable definition of ignition, and 2—the need of a standardized method of determining the ignition temperatures of inflammable metals and alloys. The exact date of the discovery of the fact that magnesium will ignite and burn is unknown. It is likely that H. Davey encountered this property of the metal during its preparation in 1808. The first reference in the literature specifically on ignition of magnesium is by Lenze, Metz, and Rubens.' They investigated the inflammability of certain magnesium alloys. Brown3-' reported that magnesium ribbon will ignite in air at 507 °C by what was called the rising temperature method. Hartman, Nagy, and Brown" reported that magnesium powder ignites from 475" to 560°C depending on particle size. According to Guise, Mars, and Wilson prolonged heating in air at 427°C of common casting magnesium alloy causes it to ignite. Samples of magnesium alloys were placed directly in the flame of a torch by Carapella and Shaw.' These investigators obtained some evidence of melting prior to ignition. For commercial magnesium, they reported an ignition temperature of 650°C. Their values varied from 450" to 800°C for magnesium alloys. Willmore and Peterson" studied the effect of air velocity, humidity, rate of heating, and foreign metal contact on the ignition temperature of magnesium. They conclude that melting is not a prerequisite for ignition and that the conditions which influence ignition are complex and difficult to analyze. The tensile properties of columbium and Cb-H alloys containing up to 455 ppm H were studied as a function of temperature and strain rate. Hydrogen, introduced into columbium at elevated temperatures, using a thermal -equilibrium technique, embrittled columbium most severely at about —77°C. This elnbrittle ment occurred even at hydrogen concentrations of an order of 20 ppm. At higher temperatures, the hydrogen tolerance of columbium increased in relation to the increased solubility of hydrogen in tile metal. Below this temperature hydrogen tolerance, as determined by ductility and fracture stress, increased slightly. Strain rate had little effect on the tensile results for cross-head speeds over the range 0.002 to 2.0 in. per min. Strain aging during the tensile test appears to explain the ductility mininmum at —77°C. The apparent increase in hydrogen tolerance at lower temperatures is attributed to the low mobility of hyhogen. Experiments were performed in which samples were prestrained in tension at room temperature and tested to failure at —196°C. Results suggest that hydrogetz segregation to preformed crack nuclei can cause subsequent embrittlement even at temperatures where hydrogen mobility is too low to cause embrittlement in a normal tensile test. COLUMBIUM is an example of the class of bcc metals with ductile-brittle transition temperatures sensitive to the presence of interstitial atom contaminants. Hydrogen is one of these embrittling contaminants. The embrittling effect of hydrogen is less potent, perhaps, in columbium than in some of the other bcc refractory metals, but it is still a problem of both theoretical and practical interest. Unlike hydrogen in iron and steels, hydrogen in columbium is exothermically rather than endo-thermically occluded. The embrittlement process in exothermic systems has not been studied as extensively as that in endothermic systems, especially at hydrogen concentrations below the limit of solubility. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the embrittlement process in initially pure columbium as a function of hydrogen content, temperature, and strain rate. The Cb-H phase diagram, according to Albrecht et al.,1 is shown in Fig. 1. Columbium reacts exothermically with hydrogen producing a solid solution at concentrations of less than about 250 ppm (parts per million by weight) H at room temperature. At concentrations above the highly temperature-dependent solvus a second phase is formed. Like many similar hydrogen-metal systems,2 his system exhibits a miscibility gap with respect to hydrogen solution. Albrecht found the critical temperature of the miscibility gap to be about 140°C, the critical concentration to be 0.23 atom fraction hydrogen, and the critical pressure to be 0.01 mm Hg. Above 140°C there is a solid solution of increasing lattice constant extending across the phase diagram. Hydrogen concentrations of particular interest in this investigation were those below the limit of solubility in columbium. At hydrogen concentrations above the limit of solubility, columbium will contain the hydrogen-rich second phase and will be brittle under most testing conditions because the hydride generally precipitates as platelets with coincident matrix lattice strains.1'3 At hydrogen concentrations below the limit of solubility, the tensile behavior of columbium is expected to be more sensitive to the interrelationships between hydrogen concentration and mobility and the testing variables such as temperature and strain rate. Literature references to the hydrogen embrittlement of metals, especially ferrous alloys and titanium alloys, are too voluminous to mention. It is only recently, however, that detailed studies of the hydrogen embrittlement of columbium have been undertaken. Wilcox et a1.4 studied the strain rate and temperature dependences of the low-temperature deformation behavior of fine-grained are-melted columbium (1 ppm H) and the effect of hydrogen content (1,9, and 30 ppm H) on the mechanical behavior of columbium at a series of temperatures for a single strain rate. A strain-aging peak was ob-served at about -50°C which was attributed to the presence of hydrogen in the metal. Eustice and carlson5 studied the effect of hydrogen on the ductility of V-Cb alloys at a series of temperatures over the range -196° to 25°C. Pure columbium was embrittled by 20 ppm H which produced a ductility transition at approximately -70°C. Ingram et al.6 studied the effect of oxygen and hydrogen on the tensile properties of columbium and tantalum. A minimum in the notched-to-unnotched tensile ratio of hydrogenated columbium was obtained at about -75°C, but because of the relatively large hydrogen content employed (200 and 390 ppm) the ductility

The reduction of chromous oxide from lime silica alumina slags by carbon-saturated iron behaves as a first-order process having a rate of 0.001 grams Cr min 1 cm 2 (pct Cr ) , substantially independent of slag composition and temperature over an important range for iron smelting. The equilibrium ratio (pct Cr)/[pct Crl is below 0.04 for slags having lime-silica ratios above 0.6. MANY studies have been conducted on chromium in slag-metal systems under oxidized conditions. Until recently the only automatic control of electric parameters in submerged-arc furnaces has been electrode control with electrode current or electrode impendance as controlled variables. Elkem Research and Development Centre has delivered this kind of control for a long time, both stand- alone controllers and control algorithms incorporated in an integrated computer control system. In recent years we have noticed increasing interest in more sophisticated electric control. Results both from pilot-plant experiments and from production furnaces show that proper electric conditions in the furnace are more important to the furnace operation than was assumed earlier. Optimal electric conditions lead to lower power consumption per ton of metal and allow use of cheaper raw materials Besides, power contracts and the market situation lead to more frequent change of load on the furnaces. Therefore it is important to vary the load in a way that allows proper electric conditions to be maintained. Based on this renewed interest in electric control, Elkem Research and Development Centre has carried out a project, starting with analysis of existing electric instrumentation and control algorithms for electrode control, and ending up with an integrated electric control strategy including power-demand control as shown in Figure 1. In this paper we will give a resume of this work and present a new integrated control strategy put into operation for the first time in June 1983. [ ]

THE history of the development of the strip in- dustry, mentioned in this paper, was covered in considerable detail by Stephen Badlam in his paper presented. before the American Iron and Steel Institute at its meeting in New York last October. The description of progress in rolling strip there out-lined will be found good reading by anyone interested in the subject. Quoting from Mr. Badlam's paper, "For practically thirty years, we find no record of the use of the backing-roll principle, until in 1916 the Lukens Steel Co., Coatesville, Pa., put in a 206-in. plate mill of the four-high type. This was a reversing mill with two 32-in. working rolls and two 50-in. backing rolls and is today making the widest and heaviest plate made anywhere in the world." The functioning of this mill, though rolling hot plate, is, on account of the extreme width and thinness of plate rolled, quite comparable to the rolling of wide strip either hot or cold and was a considerable factor in demonstrating the marked advantages available with the four-high or backing-roll mill for thin accurate rolling. As the writer has brought out, a demand for a product, the rolling of which required the character-istics of the backing-roll mill, was broached by the In-ternational Nickel Co. This resulted in an inquiry of March, 1924, for the building of a mill capable of cold-rolling wide nickel and monel metal sheets or strip, as mentioned. It may be of some interest to note, that whereas the .six-roll cluster mill with plain bearings was built for this installation, the mill designed by the United En-gineering and Foundry Co. for this inquiry was of the four-high type with roller bearings on the backing-roll necks, being essentially the same design as the four-high roller-bearing mill built in 1925 for the Rome Brass & Copper Co. This Rome mill, to quote again from Mr. Badlam's paper, "fulfilled every requirement, and was the model on which succeeding mills of this type were built."

In recent years the Homestake mine has been served by three shafts, the B. &. M., the B. & M. No. 2 and the Ellison, supplemented by an inside shaft, the Milliken, extending from the 2000-ft. level to the 3200-ft. level. In 1932, when a new operating shaft was under consideration, the bottom of the mine was at the 3200-ft. level. The B. & M. and the B. & M. No. 2 shafts were down to the 1550-ft. level and the Ellison was being deepened from the 2600 to the 3200-ft. level. All ore was hoisted at the B. & M. and Ellison shafts. Levels below the 2600 level, which were under development only, were served by the Milliken shaft. Below the 1550-ft. level, the mine was served only by the Ellison shaft from the surface. Within a few years, when ore reserves above the 1550-ft. level would be depleted, operation would be limited to the Ellison shaft and the auxiliary underground shaft. The Ellison shaft alone was not adequate for hoisting the entire output from the deeper levels and also handling all men and supplies. Furthermore, assurance of safety and uninterrupted operation required two fully equipped shafts to the deeper levels. Therefore a new operating shaft was authorized in November, 1932, and was named for A. J. M. Ross, the mine superintendent. Plans for New Shaft The B. & M. shaft, begun in 1878 before much was known of the form and extent of the orebodies, was too near the ore and was endangered by ground movement. In 1924 this shaft was seriously threatened and sinking of the B. & M. No. 2 shaft, to supplant it, was begun. The latter was completed to the 1550-ft. level in 1928. In the meantime ground movement at the B. & M. shaft had practically stopped and, though loss of the shaft constantly threatened, ore hoisting was con-

The sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar; but very few, even of those who knew hinl well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ((Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. THE third annual Joint Western Mining Convention, held at Los Angeles, Sept. 10 to 13 inclusive, was a notable success both as to attendance and interest. Registration the first day amounted to 201, and the total crept up to 347 before the close. The American Institute of Mining Engineers was well represented, approximately 80% of those registered and most of the speakers being members. This illustrates largely the amount of interlocking membership and the reason for holding at one time and place meetings of the several related organizations. The plan has proved so successful that it is probable that Spokane will extend an invitation for next year that seems likely to be accepted. It is proposed that the convention be timed so as to permit visitors from the East to stop there Oct. 3 to 5, en route to the American Institute of Mining Engineers meeting at San Francisco, Oct. 7 to 9. Simultaneously, it is expected that the Petroleum Division will hold its fall session at Los Angeles, the two streams of travel meeting in San Francisco, just before departure of the party of engineers traveling to Japan to attend the World's Engineering Congress. The Los Angeles meeting opened Monday morning with a general session under the auspices of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress with Philip Wiseman in the chair. After a series of short responses to the welcome extended, Charles W. Merrill discussed the needs of the western mining industry. A complimentary luncheon to members and delegates followed.

For many years, coal has been known to exist in the valley of the Sabinas river, in the State of Coahuila, and for about 15 years it has been worked by the Mexican International Railway Co., which opened mines for its own fuel-supply when the railway was built, and has been mining continuously ever since. The coal-basin worked by this company lies along the Sabinas river, principally on the SW. side. It covers a wide area and has been carefully prospected, but only in a few parts have the beds been found sufficiently thick and regular for economical operation. This Sabinas basin was considered the only one in this field, until, in the Spring of 1899, the Las Esperanzas basin was found by Messrs. J. L. Elliot and E. D. Peters, who were in Mexico looking after some copper-properties. After a further examination by Mr. James T. Gardiner, of New York, the Mexican Coal & Coke Co. was organized in June, and active work was begun on Nov. 5, 1899. The coal-field of Las Esperanzas, situated in the State of Coahuila, about 85 miles SW. of Eagle Pass, Texas, adjoins and runs parallel with the Sabinas basin—an anticlinal separating the two outcrops by about 2 miles. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of a part of the basin. The coal-formation is in the Upper Cretaceous, and corresponds with the Laramie measures of the United States. But little was known of the coals of Southeastern Ohio until the present survey of the State under Dr. Newberry began its work. The results of the geological investigations of Prof. E. B. Andrews in this region, and of the chemical investigations of Prof. T. G. Wormley, both of which appear in the reports of the survey for 1869 and 1874, and more recent special reports by the former, together with some data for which I am indebted to the kindness of Dr. Newberry, and my own limited observations, have served me for the preparation of the following notice of the coals lying on the western border of the great Appalachian coal-basin in the region drained by the Hocking River and its tributaries, and belonging to the Lower Coal-Measures. Some uncertainty exists as to the place in the suc- ' cession of the lower coals to be assigned to the seams known and mined in the Hocking Valley. It is the opinion of Prof. Andrews that the inequalities of the original surface were such that we cannot identify in that region the lowest coals known in Northwestern Pennsylvania and the contiguous parts of Ohio, but that we must rather count from above downwards. These conclusions Dr. Newberry is not prepared to accept, and further researches will be necessary before certainty can be attained in this matter. Meanwhile it seems, from a study of its relations to the Pomeroy or Pittsburgh seam, that what is known as the great vein of the Hocking Valley, occupies the horizon of the Upper Freeport coal, E of the Pennsylvania survey, or No. 6 in Dr. Newberry's enumeration, counting from the base. This seam, in the region in question. assumes certain characteristics which, taken in connection with its geographical position, give it a great importance among the coals of the State. The area to be noticed includes the whole or parts of several townships in Perry, Hocking, Vinton, and Athens Counties, lying near the margin of the basin over which the vein in question assumes the character of a dry-burning or splint coal, and has a thickness varying from six to ten and even twelve feet. Its precise limit southward cannot at present be clearly defined, but it has been found as far south as the line of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, with a thickness of six feet, and is mined at various points along the valley of the Hocking River, near Nelsonville, where it attains six or seven feet.
