Finely ground dried bentonites were compacted with a laboratory size Komarek roller compactor. Before compaction the moisture content of the bentonite was adjusted from 8-12% by adding water in a mixer. Predetermined amounts of Nat CO3 activator were dissolved in that water and added to the bentonite. Comparative rheological tests were then run with the compacted, activated bentonite versus unaltered bentonite. Compaction and activation of the bentonites improved their viscosity and water loss properties considerably, more so than extrusion and slurrying. It was concluded that, by using a compactor, bentonite reserves can be extended because low quality material can be improved without adding organic polymers. Introduction Many bentonites mined in Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana are naturally of drilling mud quality. Those of low sodium content, and those of predominantly potassium, calcium, and magnesium exchangeable cations need altering to meet drilling mud requirements. Most foreign bentonites require sodium activation to meet drilling mud standards set by the American Petroleum Institute (API).

Application of an hydraulic mining system to a troublesome overburden removal project has unlocked an estimated three million tons of ore reserves at Caland Ore Co., Ltd.'s open-pit iron operation in Ontario, Canada. The mine, operated by Caland under a 99-year lease and royalty agreement with Steep Rock Iron Mines, Ltd., would have been forced to curtail its mining operations later this year as the economic limits of the original pit design were being reached. As a result of the stripping program, which uses a tandem set of Marconaflo jet slurry systems, Caland officials now estimate that mining will continue into 1977. These reserves, added to existing ore stockpiles, are expected to sustain the firm's pelletizing operation well into 1981. In addition, Caland engineers are initiating studies to continue mining since the ore body, to date, has yet to bottom out.

THOUGHTFUL people have raised questions as to how long nature's bank could continue to accept our drafts. These questions came to the fore so persistently, and there were so many evidences -such as the failure of natural gas in Indiana, the increasing scarcity of lumber in the Lake Superior region, the progressive sterility of Southern farm lands, the choking of the Sacramento River by tailing-point-ing to possible danger from overdraft or to misuse of resources and opportunity, that President Roosevelt called a conference which assembled at the White House on May 13, 1908, to consider these and related questions. This, the first great Conservation Congress, had a wide and beneficial influence on the thought of the world. It profoundly influenced the course of succeed-ing events and, while even yet there are sharp dis-agreements as, to the wisdom of much that has been done in the name of conservation, I believe that thoughtful men, and engineers especially, agree that the time had come when sharp attention was properly called to the waste that accompanied development of our resources. RESOURCES LARGE BUT NOT INEXHAUSTIBLE In 1908 there was a surprisingly large number of men, who should have known better, prepared to argue that our resources are "inexhaustible." No competent mining engineer, of course, believes that, as regards minerals at least. They may be, and, in most cases, fortunately are, large; as to many of them our knowledge is too general to permit measuring the reserves; but we know now, and I think the public appreciates, that there is a limit to our supply of gas, oil, coal, iron, and metals. Indeed, with the inten-sive study made necessary to meet the demands of the war, and the more careful accounting required by the newer systems of taxation, depletion has become a common word, and that mines are wasting assets has become a platitude.

An improved technique is described for the accurate determination of melting points of metals in the temperature range 1500' to 2500°C. The improvements consist of gradient heating and refinements in cavity preparation to obtain true black-body conditions. The melting point of hafnium, as determined by this method, is set at 2222°±30°C. This is over 200°C higher than one of the values reported earlier. Discrepancies in the previously reported values for the melting point of hafnium are explained. The melting points of zirconium and titanium are found to be 1855O±15OC and 1668°±10°C, respectively. Reproducibility of results was ±3OC. PRIMARILY, this report is being made to correct a 1975o±25oC1 value for the melting point of hafnium, and to present an improved method for melting point determination. As a matter of interest, the technique was also applied to determining the melting point of zirconium and titanium. There is a wide difference in the melting point of hafnium as reported by competent investigators. DeBoer and Fast' reported a value of 2230°±500C, and later work of McPherson, as reported by Aden-stedt, placed the melting point at 1975o±25oC. Zwikker" calculated that the melting point was 2430°C. In resolving this discrepancy, improvements were made in the procedure for determining the melting points of refractory metals in the range 1500" to 2500°C. Special techniques are necessary to determine the melting point of these metals accurately. Since the metals oxidize in air above 900oC, the determinations must be carried out in an inert gas or vacuum. Also, every known refractory contaminates them to some extent. In addition, the attainment of true black-body conditions is always difficult. DeBoer and Fast actually determined the melting point of Hf-Zr as-deposited iodide process alloys and extrapolated to 100 pet Hf. McPherson employed a tungsten wire suspension similar to that described by Schramm, Gordon, and Kaufmann,1 and used hafnium metal produced by the iodide process. There was no apparent reason for the wide spread in melting points, since the quality of the metal was very good and the work was under the direction of highly competent investigators. Retracing some of this work revealed one understandable error in the case of hafnium, and led to development of an improved technique for determining melting points of reactive metals in the range 1500" to 2500°C. Material Crystal bar hafnium, zirconium, and titanium were used for this work, with analyses as shown in Table I. The hafnium was of the highest purity that has been prepared, though not as pure as the zirconium and titanium. At the instigation of the Pittsburgh Area Office of the AEC, a special lot of Hfo2 was purified, converted to the tetraflouride, and bomb-reduced with calcium, all at the Iowa State College Laboratories. This crude hafnium metal was then refined by the iodide process at the Foote Mineral Co. All specimens were cut with a Sic wheel, ground, pickled, and dried carefully before use. Procedure General Tungsten Suspension Method—In this method, a small specimen is suspended by a fine tungsten wire in a slender, induction-heated tungsten or tantalum cylinder, all under vacuum. The melting point is determined by heating the specimen slowly while observing it with an optical pyrometer focused upon a portion of the specimen that radiates as a black body. This means that there should be no reflected radiation, either from colder objects near the pyrometer or from hotter surfaces. The induction heater would be the only hotter object and, if it is slender enough, the specimen will attain the same temperature. Often a slender hole is drilled into the specimen as a source of black-body radiation. This was the general method used by McPherson in obtaining his value of 1975°C for the melting point of hafnium. A scrubber of new design has been invented for the beneficiation of glass and chemical sands. The machine is described and its capacity and metallurgical efficiency compared with the performance of other sand cleaning devices. THREE years ago, when the Process Research Laboratory at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. sought a remedy for the increasing cost of disposing of great quantities of spent sands from foundries, R. C. Edwards developed a continuous inclined paddle scrubber which removed a substantial amount of the charred coatings from the grains with a surprisingly small amount of degradation of the sand itself.' The satisfactory results obtained on foundry sand, using this piece of equipment in conjunction with classification, suggested that a similar procedure could probably be applied to the cleaning of other sands, such as those required by the glass and chemical industries. This paper describes the flowsheet and the results of tests performed on impure natural sands. The four materials tested were silica sands obtained from widely separated geographical areas. Three of the sands tested contained various amounts of iron oxide and the fourth an excessive amount of calcareous bonding material. The iron oxide was present predominantly in the form of grain coatings, which were scuffed by the paddle scrubber, and in all cases a product was manufactured which would meet one of the sets of specifications imposed by the glass industry.' The Edwards paddle scrubber used in these tests consists of a rubber-lined steel cylinder 18 in. in diam and 48 in. long, mounted on a frame so that its slope can be varied 5" to 35" from horizontal. This variable slope permits controlled flow of material through the machine. Rubber paddles rotate inside the cylinder and are secured to a center shaft 2 in. square, which extends through the entire length and is turned at both ends so that it can be supported by sleeve bearings centrally fixed in the end plates of the shell. At the upper or feed end it extends through the bearing on the end plate into a sheave, to which the motor drive is connected by means of Texrope transmission. The four sets of paddles mounted on the shaft, two in each set, are made of rubber belting, 1/4 in. thick, 9 in. wide, and 16 in. long. The two paddles in each set are secured on opposite sides of the square shaft, but in the same longitudinal position along the shaft axis. In other words, the two paddles in the set operate 180" apart. Each successive set is mounted 90" from the preceding one. One end of each paddle is bolted to the square shaft and the other weighted by a steel bar, lx1 1hx9 in. long, which is attached about Yz in. from the outer tip of the paddle. By centrifugal force at proper shaft speed, these weights force the paddle surface to rub smoothly against the rubber lining of the cylinder. During operation, the sand forces its way between the paddle face and the surface of the cylinder, providing the necessary abrading action as the pulp flows by gravity down the length of the cylinder. The capacity of the machine is limited by the amount and the hardness of the coating material and by the quality of product desired. This paper describes experiments which represent an effort to measure preciscly the pressure-time history in detonating condensed commercial explosives. The performance of explosives in mining has been a favorite subject for experimentalists and theorists for many decades. Much useful empirical information has been developed; but it has not yet been possible to predict, or even to account for, the behavior of explosives in mining on the basis of fundamental physical principals. A basic piece of information that would appear necessary for any rigorous analysis is the pressure-time history in the detonating condensed explosive. The experiments described here represent an effort to measure this relationship precisely in commercial explosives. THE EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental method, first described by Cowan and Jacksonl has been extensively evaluated by Cowan and Balchan for relatively simple explosives. The experimental procedure involves the detonation of a layer of explosive between metal plates whose external surfaces are polished to a mirror finish (Fig. 1). The implantation of B+ , P+, and As&apos; into silicon has been studied with the purpose of making shallow p-n junctions. The influence of such parameters as 1) ion energy, 2) target orientation and temperature, 3) total dose, and 4) annealing schedule was investigated. An energy range of 70 to 300 kev was used for boron and phosphorus implants and up to 500 kev for arsenic. It is found that the experimental projected range agrees well with theory and that shallow junction depths can be made reproducibly. ION implantation has received much attention recently as a technique for doping semiconductors. Specifically, it has the potential of supplementing or replacing the diffusion process as a method for making p-n junctions. In a few specific cases it has been used successfully to make semiconductor junction devices. Potential advantages of ion implantation doping over diffusion techniques are: 1) It affords greater control of shallow junction depths (< 0.2 µ) while maintaining high peak concentrations. This is particularly important for high-speed switching devices, since lower junction capacitances and resistances can be achieved. 2) More precise registration of small planar structures can be realized if proper masking procedures are employed. This advantage is especially useful in the design of high-density integrated circuits. It has been used to advantage in FET fabrication since the edge of the source or drain can be aligned precisely at the edge of the gate electrode.&apos; 3) Ion implanatation permits lower temperatures than diffusion techniques. This factor alleviates the problem of compatibility of diffusivities often encountered when designing multiple-junction structures. Also, the lower temperatures create fewer thermal defects and dislocations, which may account for the high efficiency of some ion-implanted solar cells.2 4) Impurity profiles can be more easily tailored to resemble ideal distributions. Successful exploitation of the potential advantages of ion implantation techniques will depend on increased knowledge and understanding of the subject. The factors likely to be influential in determining impurity distribution profiles in ion-implanted single-crystal targets have been reviewed by J. F. Gibbons.3 In addition to the mass and energy of the implanted ion, the total dose, target orientation, and target temperature are important parameters. The annealing temperature required for removing lattice damage and incorporating the implanted species on an electrically active site is very important. This paper describes an investigation of some of these factors. Implants of boron, phosphorus, and arsenic into silicon have been studied. Energy ranges of 50 to 300 kev were used for boron and phosphorus and up to 500 kev for arsenic. In addition to the implantation energy, the effects of total dose, target temperature, and post implant anneal have been investigated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The implantation targets were silicon wafers cut from Czochralski-grown crystals, lapped, and chemically polished. The orientations were (111), (110). and (100) with misorientations of up to 7 deg from the principal axis. For this study, accurate target alignment (i.e., within 0.1 deg) was not available and quoted misorientation values should be regarded as approximate . The implantation equipment consisted of an ion source, a 300-kev linear accelerator tube, an electromagnetic separator, and the associated target supporting and beam focusing assemblies. The ion source was a simple oscillating electron type source,4 which has been described elsewhere.5 The gaseous compounds BF3, PF5, and AsH3 were used as ion sources for B+, P+, As+, and AS+&apos;. Analyzed current levels of up to 20 pamp could be obtained; however, for this investigation target current levels of 1-3 µ amp were usually employed. The analyzed ion beam was collimated through a double slit (1.4 x 0.4 cm) and swept perpendicularly to the long axis of the slit such that an area of about 2 sq cm on each target was covered. Dosages of around 1015 cm-2 were normally employed, but smaller amounts were also used for comparison. A uniform flux density over the bombarded area was assured by the continuous use of profile monitors similar to those described by Wegner and Feigenbaum.6 Post-implant annealing was accomplished in an argon atmosphere in a temperature range of 600" to 950°C. It was not part of the purpose of this investigation to study the annealing kinetics; however, some isochronal and isothermal anneal experiments were conducted to determine the time and temperature necessary to render a reasonably high portion of the implanted ions electrically active (i.e., higher than 50 pct). Post-implant anneal temperatures of around 900° and 600°C were required for boron, and arsenic and phosphorus implants, respectively. Arsenic and phosphorus implants increased in conductivity rather abruptly at the proper anneal temperature of the isochronal curve, but boron increased more gradually over a wider range. Isothermal anneal curves were reasonably flat after 10 min, so an anneal time of 1/2 hr was used for the experimental results described below. The profiling techniques were: 1) neutron activation analysis, 2) differential sheet resistance,7 and 3) junction staining.8 The differential sheet resistance technique is commonly employed in this type of study. THIS paper describes experiments in which eight test samples of gelatin dynamite were fired in three different types of apparatus and the quantity and composition of the gaseous products of detonation determined. The special dynamites were so prepared that the oxygen balance of the samples varied from -35.0 to +6.0 g. per 100 g. of explosive, including the wrapper. By means of this graded series of explosives, the relation between oxygen balance and gaseous products of detonation could be studied explicitly. The effect of varying oxygen balance on explosive strength has-been discussed in another paper.1 The apparatus employed in the work described in the present paper included (1) the Bichel gage, a steel bomb of 15-1 volume; (2) the Crawshaw-Jones confined detonation apparatus, a steel cannon from which the explosive is fired into a pipe of 904 volume; and (3) the Hercules tank, an apparatus in which the explosive is confined in a quartz block which is placed in a steel tank of about 4500-1. volume. A full description of the apparatus is given later. VARIABLES AFFECTING COMPOSITION OF DETONATION PRODUCTS The character of the detonation products of commercial explosives is governed in part by the same factors that affect the combustion products from explosive mixtures of air with gases or vapors. In either case, combustible materials-namely, carbon, hydrogen, and sometimes sulfur-are present and combined variously. In an exploding gas mixture the combustibles are oxidized by oxygen in the admixed air, whereas with explosives the necessary oxygen is provided by oxygen-carrying materials in the explosive ingredients.

THIS paper describes the application of amine flotation to a specific problem-that of increasing the grade of magnetite concentrates derived from an iron ore requiring extremely fine grinding for mineral liberation. Experiments conducted on an iron ore from Wisconsin had shown that concentrates containing 60 to 62 per cent iron and 12 to 14 per cent silica could be produced by magnetic separation. The residual silica occurred as quartz and hornblende, either entrained or locked with magnetite. Most advantageous utilization of the concentrate, however, necessitated that the silica content be reduced to about 5 per cent, equivalent to an iron content of 67.5 per cent. It had been demonstrated that tabling of the magnetic concentrate removed sufficient quartz and hornblende to yield an acceptable concentrate, but disadvantages inherent in tabling dictated that flotation be investigated as a substitute. The goals set for the flotation investigation were: (I) the production of concentrates of about 68 per cent iron content from the magnetic concentrate; (2) an iron recovery of about 85 per cent of that in the feed to flotation; and (3) minimum reagent cost. Both batch and continuous flotation tests were employed; the former, to establish the procedure and the latter to verify it. Although the data were obtained on a specific ore, and with a commercial application in view, it is believed that they have a bearing on other problems where amine flotation is being used or is anticipated. SAMPLES Two samples, designated "minus 100mesh magnetic concentrate" and "minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate," were used for the batch experimental work. They differed only in the degree to which the crude ore was ground prior to magnetic separation. They were stored moist in steel drums in quantities sufficient for all the experimental work reported. This procedure had the advantage of allowing all tests to be made on common samples, but had the disadvantage that the individual flotation samples, because of the difference in storage time, were subject to various stages of surface alteration. Previous work had indicated that common samples were desirable for the batch studies, and it was decided that if these data appeared sufficiently promising the effect of surface alteration could be checked best by continuous tests. The size distributions and the assays of the samples are given in Table I. The minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate, on which most of the flotation tests were made, assayed 60.9 per cent iron, 13.3 per cent silica, and 0.016 per cent phosphorus. The minus 325-mesh portion represented 78.1 per cent of the sample by weight, and assayed 67.9 per cent iron. Thus, the insoluble, mainly silica, was concentrated

W. D. Haentjens (Barrett, Haentjens and Co., Hazleton, Pa.) — The authors are to be complimented on undertaking a project which has little available experimental data. There are so many variables in the hydraulic transport of solid materials that it is difficult to correlate the experimental information from one series of tests into usable data involving other materials or even similar materials but of different size consists. The friction data is of particular interest to those involved in pipeline design. Most such pipelines, however, involve portions which are not level and the effect of sloping or vertical lines might also be considered in extensions of this test work. Pump manufacturers are concerned about criticism resulting from the stated amount of degradation occurring in a pump. The amount of degradation is affected somewhat by pump design and this should be taken into consideration. The pump which was loaned for this work was a modification of a standard medium duty slurry pump. This modification was for maximum particle size, however if minimum degradation is the object, then other design changes would be indicated. Although there is a tendency to be less concerned with degradation in industrial applications, it is nevertheless an important factor in many uses and further studies should be made. In particular, the amount of degradation could possibly be segregated into more classifications, rather than charge some losses to the pump which apparently are occurring in other handling. It seems difficult to evaluate the degradation which occurs in handling the coal into the pump sump and in removing it from the line into the tank. Each handling, of course, contributes some degradation, as does the screening operation itself. These are all charged to the pump, or to the pipe line and pump together; and, although they may be small, they could possibly be evaluated. It is interesting to note the verification of the old rule of thumb of maximum particle size equal to approximately one-third of the pipe size. Our experience has shown size distribution to have an effect on the flow characteristics and if this data is available for the tests which were run, it would be interesting supplementary information. A. P. Pipilen, M. Weintraub and A. A. Orning (Authors&apos; Reply) — In this paper the authors have attempted to outline some of the major factors affecting a rational design for a solids-liquid transport system. They are grateful to Mr. Haentjens for pointing out several other equally important considerations. Pump manufacturers, in general, should be complimented on the strides that have been made in decreasing particle degradation within the pump. Considerable research and a great deal of mathematical analysis is required before pump design in this field can become a science rather than an art, for each system requires a different set of compromises. As Mr. Haentjens indicates, maximum-particle-size handling capability may be inconsistent with minimum degradation; even more important, the rotor profile for the most efficient transfer of energy to the fluid may have to be compromised to reduce particle breakage, for, whenever particle density differs from fluid density, the two phases will have different trajectories. Some evidence of this geometric factor is provided by a cursoy analysis in the Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations now in preparation, where it is indicated that, for the pump used, degradation decreased when the tangential velocity was decreased and when the radial velocity was increased. This relation, itself, is probably a function of particle size and concentration. Some data on particle size distribution, as requested by Mr. Haentjens, will be provided in the Report of Investigations referred to above in addition to that already presented in Table II of the original paper. However, in the limited number of tests it is difficult to distinguish between cause and effect, for not only did the particle size distribution alter the flow characteristics, but, through the medium of degradation, the operating conditions rapidly altered the particle size distribution.

The past year has been another year of vigorous fundamental research in mineral processing as evidenced by the active publication of results, particularly in Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, United States and USSR. It was also noteworthy for several significant meetings and conferences. The Basic Science sessions at the AIME Annual Meeting continued to attract an increasing audience and the sessions were especially notable for the active discussion of papers. The third Engineering Foundation Conference on Particulate Matter Systems,1 chaired by F. F. Aplan, was held in Milwaukee in August and attracted over 100 experts from five continents. Sessions at this week-long conference covered comminution, particle characterization, separation of fine particles, fluid-solid separations as applied to pollution control, flotation kinetics, particle-particle interactions and particle agglomeration. This popular conference will be continued under John Karpinski of Bethlehem Steel Corp. as 1968 chairman.

The following notes, prepared in 1908, as the result of a personal examination and extensive explorations under my direction in 1906, have been revised and greatly augmented after two subsequent visits and further explorations in 1910. The hard iron-ores of the south coast of Oriente Province, in the island of Cuba, have been known for many years, in fact one mine has been in operation for more than 20 years; but it is only within the past four years that the large mantle-deposits of brown ores of the north coast have attracted serious attention. A. C, Spencer&apos; has described these ores in a paper, entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, which refers to the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas deposits. C. M. Weld,2 in a scholarly paper, The Residual Brown Iron-Ores of Cuba, has discussed the character and possible genesis of these deposits with particular reference to the Moa field, calling attention also to the Taco and Navas fields in addition to those described by Spencer. Descriptive articles with reference to the Mayari field, and a few words about the Moa deposit, have also appeared3 It is the purpose of the present paper to give some account of the exploration of the Moa deposit arid to call attention to its commercial importance. Also considered in the calculation are the elastic constants, Curie temperatures, saturation magnlelizalion values, and indications of short- range order. The measnred activity coefficient of iron in anstetnite could not be accurately matched. The major source of uncertainty in the model is thought to be the magnetic contribution to the entropy of austenite. Calcrclations were extended to Fe-ni-C alloys using available carbon-acliuity data. The free energy of transformation from martensile to r at fixed composition was obtained as a function of nickel and carbon contetzt, and binary thetal-carbon phase diagrams Were estimaled as a function of nickel contenl. We needed thermodynamic information for Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C alloys at temperatures between 400" and 800°K in order to interpret the results of several phase-transformation studies. The most recent theoretical analysis of the thermodynamics of Fe-Nialloysl was based on a lumped-parameter, regular-solution model and used the Fe-Ni phase diagram available at that time.&apos; Because significant difficulties were encountered in attempting to extend this analysis to Fe-Ni-C alloys, and because more experimental data has become available recently, we decided to attempt a new correlation. The analysis used here allows the extrapolation of measured and calculated thermodynamic values to lower temperatures and the extension of the thermodynamic analysis to Fe-Ni-C alloys. The structure of this correlation consists of expressions containing a total of twenty-one adjustable parameters. The forms of these expressions are discussed in the next section; however, a less formal summary is presented now to provide a physical overview of the model and to indicate its connections to prior work. Primary input information for this correlation is described below. The measured values of the specific heat of iron3 and its analysis475 and theoretical estimates of the specific heat of y* iron at low tempera- loys at 1123°K has been measured by solution calori-metry.7 The enthalpies of both a, and y have been measured most recently by Scheil and Saftig,B who used a dry-ice calorimeter. These data are used to formulate expressions for the heat of mixing of y and the heat of transformation of a, to y both at 1123°K. The a and y solubility limits in the Fe-Ni phase diagram have been redetermined recently9 by methods which assure a close approach to equilibrium. The a to y transformation can occur without change in nickel content or free energy at a temperature called TO; TO temperatures for various nickel contents have been estimated from transformation studies. The computed free-energy functions are adjusted by means of the parameters to fit both the phase diagram and the TO temperatures. Primary emphasis is placed on the phase diagram fit. Iron activities have been measured in Fe-Ni austenite10 between 973" and 1173°K. These activity data, which cannot be fitted accurately with our model, indicate that iron is substantially ideal in iron-rich austenite. Secondary, but helpful, information for the present correlation is provided by neutron diffraction and saturation magnetization measurements on both body-centered and face-centered Fe-Ni alloys."-&apos;3 These results were interpreted11 in terms of composition-insensitive, localized magnetic moments on both iron

It is well to bring before you again the chief purpose of the National Research Council and of this its Division of Engineering, to stimulate others to make researches rather than to make them ourselves, because a given amount of our energy spent in inciting others will accomplish far more than if applied in executing them ourselves. This is because there are scattered through the numberless governmental, educational, and industrial laboratories of the country a very great number of investigators not only capable of being stimulated, but willing to aid in cooperative broadly planned research rather than to follow the haphazard methods of the past. Taken collectively, these laboratories and their personnel can produce an annual crop of knowledge the value of which is of the order rather of billions than of millions of dollars. I invite you to regard this potential product as a crop, to be planned, fertilized, harvested, and distributed with the sane order of statesmanship, the same breadth of view, with which we treat any other great human product or achievement, whether agricultural, industrial, or transportational.

Conventional analyses of seepage through saturated media do not apply when tailings impoundments are located above a partially saturated zone. Three stages of seepage are identified and methods for estimating the seepage rates and duration of each stage, based upon flow in partially saturated and saturated porous media, are demonstrated. The effectiveness of earthen liners is discussed and procedures for estimating the required properties of the porous media are provided.

PRIOR to 1902, the tramming of ore from the stopes to the shafts, in the Butte mines, was done by man or animal power, but the demand for greater tonnage and the need for more improved methods of tramming the ore resulted in the installation of the compressed-air locomotive in a few mines. Some of the objections to animal haulage were thus eliminated, but this locomotive was not generally adopted, because of a number of limiting features. It was superseded by the electric trolley locomotive. The early types of trolley locomotives were not satisfactory from the operators&apos; viewpoint, but. they had many economic advantages and after a number of years, in which improvements were constantly made in the structural details, they became dependable, so that the use of animals for main haulage in the mines has now been practically abandoned. There are now operating in the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., 185 trolley-type locomotives, each of which has replaced five animals. It cost approximately $50 per month to keep an animal, hence the economies that resulted fully justified the expenditure of electrifying the haulage systems. The haulage conditions in this company&apos;s mines possess many advantageous features that are not always found in underground mine workings. The drifts and crosscuts are large, approximately 5 ft. (1.5 m.) wide by 7 ½ ft. (2.3 m.) high, and have curves of no less than 18 ft. (5.5 m.) radius; and the roadbeds of the drifts and crosscuts have a uniform grade of 0.5 per cent. toward the shaft, or in favor of the loaded trips. In all of the mines, except two, the track gage is 18 in. (45.7 cm.), and all tracks in the main haulageways are laid with 25-lb. (11.3 kg.) rails. The stations at the shaft are large, well-lighted, clean, and cool. The average temperature of ,the stations, however, is about 75° F. (24° C.), while the average temperature in some of the drifts and crosscuts is 92° F. (33.5° C.).

While working upon the processes which have been descaribed from time to time in the Transactions of the Institute for the estimation of these elements, I discovered that certain reactions take place under certain conditions which if overlooked, give erroneous results. Some of these reactions are new, to me at least. Estimation of Manganese. A weighed sample is dissolved in nitric acid and the manganese precipitated by potassium chlorate in the usual manner, care being taken to add some strong nitric acid at the last, and boil, to completely destroy the chlorate. Filter through purified asbestos, suck the filter dry with an aspirator; then wash with HNO3(1.40sp). gr.) until the acid comes through clear, and again suck dry with the aspirator. The nitric acid used for washing must be free from nitrous acid, for this acid reduces the peroxide of manganese; the lower oxide thus formed is dissolved by the strong nitric acid and is carried through the filter; some manganese also will nearly always be dissolved if the precipitate is washed with water.
