DIATOMS are microscopic aquatic plants of the order Bacillariaceae. They are unicellular plants with skeletons made up of amorphous opaline silica. The skeletons show highly ornate, complicated geometrical designs. Diatoms live in water virtually everywhere. They are found in clean sea water, brackish water, and fresh-water lakes and ponds. When conditions are right, diatoms propagate by subdivision in huge numbers. Alkalinity, temperature, and the presence of high concentrations of silica in the water largely control diatom life. When the diatoms die the skeletons drop to the bottom of their habitat to form oozes of vary-ing thicknesses. DIATOMITES Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is composed essentially of the siliceous remains of the diatoms, although other organic skeletons are also present, especially in sea-water deposits where radiolaria, sponges and silico-flagellates are common. Impurities are generally carbonaceous material, fine-grained silt, volcanic ash and dust, and occasional coarse grains of sand. Diatomites are marine, brackish, or fresh-water, depending upon types of diatoms and their method of deposition.

The mechanical properties have been determined for a large number of alloy-free martensitic steels with carbon contents ranging from 0.08 to 0.20 pct and with manganese contents of about 0.4 to 0.5 pet. These steels were tested 1) as water-quenched, 2) after quenching, temper rolling, and tinning, and 3) after tempering treatments which involved temperatures from 400o to 1300oF and times from 1 min to 8 hr. The majority of these tests represent steel from commercial-size coils, i.e., strip 32 in. wide, coil weights up to 20,000 16, and steel thicknesses from 0.0055 to 0.024 in. As a result of these treatments, it has been shown that as-quenched low-carbon alloy-free steels can be produced with tensile strengths ranging from 140,000 to 220,000 psi and tensile elongations from 3.0 to 4.0 pet in 2 in. The tensile strength of the as-quenched martensites can be represented by the equation, tensile strength (ksi) = 119 + 560 (wt pet C). The response to tempering of these steels is related to previous work by Muir, Averbach, and Cohen and by Grange and Baughman. Strain aging of low-carbon martensite has also been investigated. If low-carbon steels are defined as those steels with a maximum carbon content of 0.2 pet, it is found that the literature on low-carbon, alloy-free martensites contains little data on the mechanical properties of these steels. However, the following facts concerning low-carbon alloy-free martensites seem firmly established:'-' 1) The major factors in controlling the strength of the martensite appear to be a) fine structure, b) the internal strain resulting from the transformation, and, particularly, c) the amount of carbon in solid solution. 2) In low-carbon steels, the martensite is auto-tempered and is in the form of needles with only minor amounts of internal twinning, whereas the martensite in high-carbon steels forms as plates which are internally twinned on a fine scale. 3) Care must be taken in comparing the results of work that has been done on low-carbon steels with varying amounts of alloying elements to data on plain carbon steels. As has been noted by Irvine, Pickering, and Garstone,6 alloying elements generally lower the martensite start temperature and, thereby, decrease the amount of auto tempering obtained during the quench. This investigation was concerned with the aluminum-oxide particle dispersions, the mechanical properties, and the re-c,uystallization characteristics of some internally oxidized copper-aluminum alloys. Obserued hardness vaviations are in agreement with variations in oxide particle size revealed by electron metallographic studies. The increase in yield strength caused by internal oxidation is quite sensitive to matrix grain size and is accompanied by a loss of ductility, particularly at higher temperatures. Elevated temperature ductility is con-side,vably improved if major grain reorientation is accomplished by ve recrystallization prior to testing. The oxide particles offer a considerable restraint to softening during annealing after cold deformation. The principles and theory on which the U. S. mining law of 1872 was based are well understood, and have been discussed at great length by many writers. The papers by Dr. R. W. Raymond1 in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers have covered the subject very fully, with explanations of practical results in many adjudicated cases. It is believed that the following instance of the application of the law in recent years will have some weight in a discussion of proposed changes in our mining laws. The litigation between the St. Louis Mining & Milling Co., and the Montana Mining Co., Ltd., a British corporation, over portions of the Drumlummon lode covered more than 20 years, and resulted in a judgment for damages in favor of the St. Louis Co. of such an amount that the Montana Co. declined to pay the judgment, and therefore lost the entire property. The Drumlummon lode claim in the Marysville district, Mont., was located in 1876 by Thomas Cruse. When he staked out his claim, he assumed that the discovery on the Drumlummon vein, and another showing of mineral about, 200 ft. distant, were on the same vein, and the center line of the claim was given a course of N. 579" E. Development of the Drumlummon vein soon showed that its strike was about N. 15" E., and that the other outcrop was on the North Star lode; so it was inevitable that the Drumlummon vein would cross one or both side lines of the location, and the Montana Co. found it advisable to acquire adjoining claims on both sides of the Drumlummon, in order to avoid possible litigation over apex rights. They bought the Marble Heart, but would not purchase the Hopeful (see Pigs. 1 and 2), at the terms proposed for the reason that exploration in the Cruse level had shown the vein to be barren in that region. The owners of the Hopeful were sinking an incline from that claim in 1889, and the Montana Co. enjoined them, contending

In leaching ores at atmospheric pressure it is often desirable to apply high reagent concentration, long exposure time, and elevated temperature. All of these conditions tend to increase the treatment cost. In conventional leaching, direct or countercurrent, the leaching fluid is needed to transport the solids through the process. This requires relatively large volumes of fluid and limits the reagent concentration economically feasible. The relatively high dilution also increases fuel cost if leaching is to be done above ambient temperature. Heating of water is expensive.

Two reagents have been proposed for the commercial extraction of copper from leach liquors, namely LIX64N produced by General Mills Chemicals, Inc. and Kelex 120 produced by Ashland Chemical Company. Each of these reagents consists of an active extractant and an additive. In the LIX system, the additive improves the kinetics of the extraction reaction whereas for the Kelex system, the additive acts primarily as a third phase inhibitor. Equilibrium and kinetic studies have been conducted with both systems. In general, the Kelex system effectively extracts copper at a lower pH than LIX64N; furthermore, the rate of extraction with Kelex is considerably faster than with LIX which indicates that systems employing the Kelex extractants might also be able to employ agitated columns rather, than mixer- settlers which are absolutely necessary for effective extraction with the LIX reagents.

THE application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and under varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarine geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions.

A process has been developed to refine high-grade commercial aluminum to 99.99 pct purity. This enzploys precipitating titanium, vanadium, and zirconiu~ as borides. The upgraded liquid is partially crystallized under conditions that prevent massive freezing. The resulting crystals are compacted and washed free of adhernig impure liquid aluminum by melting the top crystals while draining off the liquid. Finally, the bottorn portion of the crystal bed is melted and removed as the pure product. Leakage from the crystallizat~on vessel is prevented by a layer of alumina granules that are not wetted by the aluminum. ALUMINUM of 99.99 pct purity is desired in a variety of applications. These include electrolytic capacitors, catalyst carriers, decorative trim for automobiles, aluminum powder, and high-strength alloys. This market was for many years filled by refining commercial-purity aluminum in a three-liquid-layer electrolytic cell of the type originally proposed by Hoopes. To meet the expanding need for lower-cost high-purity aluminum, a refining process based on chemical precipitation and fractional crystallization was developed. The availability of this super-purity metal was announced in November 1961, and three patents1-3 relating to the process were issued in 1965. An alternate process, comprising continuous fractional crystallization of a portion of a liquid-aluminum feed stream under conditions of strong agitation at the surface of the growing crystals, was published by Dewey4 in 1965. Earlier proposals by Larsen 5 and by Regner6 also emphasized the advantage of rapid agitation of the melt in the region of the crystallization zone. johnson 7 more recently proposed extracting purified aluminum from an alloy by mixing crystals of pure aluminum into the molten alloy, allowing them to grow, and removing the pure aluminum as by casting. Aamot's 8 recent patent describes a freeze refining process that involves controlled partial freezing against cooled moving retort walls. The Alcoa process to produce high-purity aluminum is schematically described in Fig. 1. Relatively pure aluminum is treated with boron in a furnace (a) to precipitate high melting point impurities, the supernatant liquid is transferred to a crystallization vessel (b), the liquid is partially crystallized with mechanized "tamping" (c), the remaining impure liquid is tapped out and the crystal bed partially and directionally re-melted to wash the underlying crystals (d), and the balance of the crystals is melted and withdrawn as high-purity aluminum (e). PRINCIPLES OF FRACTIONAL CRYSTALLIZATION Commonly encountered impurity elements form two types of systems with aluminum. Titanium, vanadium, and some other transition elements in periodic groups IV, V, and VI are the high melting point impurities. Initial solidification of aluminum containing small percentages of these elements will produce solid markedly enriched in them at temperatures slightly above the freezing point of high-purity aluminum. Most other elements, such as silicon and iron, produce eutectic type reactions with aluminum. In this case the first solid formed on initial solidification at temperatures slightly below the freezing point for high-purity aluminum is markedly depleted while the remaining liquid is enriched in these elements. Gravity drainage is the self-propulsion of oil downward in the reservoir rock. Under favorable natural and operational conditions, it has been found to effect recoveries comparable to water displacement. With modern technical knowledge, the operator can often make a choice between dissolved gas drive, water drive and gravity drainage as the principal recovery agent in a reservoir. It is desirable that the opeator be able to determine which of the three agents will be most effective under each set of conditions. So far, gravity drainage has received less consideration than the other two. In this paper. an endeavor is made to set forth some of the principles of gravity drainage, to point out the types of reservoirs favorable for it, and to show how it may be applied in them. Field examples are described and discussed. Introduction Since early in the history of the oil industry, it has been recognized that gravity is one of the three important natural forces for expelling oil from the reservoir rock. As knowledge of the technology of oil recovery progressed, ideas changed with respect to the relative importance of the three forces and with respect to the manners in which they functioned. For a time, disproportionate emphasis was placed on the importance and function of gas and the need for conserving gas pressures. More recently, disproportionate emphasis has been placed on encroaching edge water. Only lately has there been evidence that the function and importance of gravity was to receive due consideration. Study of this neglected phase of oil recovery is needed to round out our knowledge of reservoir behaviors and to gain a balanced viewpoint of the interplay of forces that may operate in varying importance in reservoirs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss mainly in a qualitative way, the functions of gravity, to present some concrete instances where it has been important and to raise some questions that should be investigated further. Oil-recovery Agents The important natural agents for effecting oil recovery that may be originally available in a reservoir are gas, both dissolved in the oil and free in gas caps, encroaching edge water and gravity. Each of these agents can act in a dual capacity—physically to overcome the surface energies that hold the oil within the pores and mechanically to overcome viscous . resistance and to propel the oil through the porous reservoir rock to the wells. Advancing edge water displaces the oil from the pores and lifts it updip to structurally lower wells. Gravity drains the oil from the pores and flows it downdip to the wells. Gas displaces oil from the pores, entrains it in the gas stream and flows it to the wells, but gas in solution also affects the physical properties of the oil and thus can influence oil recovery by the other agents, whether or not the mechanical energy in the gas is utilized. Variations of a very reliable geochemical field test for beryllium developed by Patten and Ward, have been adapted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to facilitate rapid testing of reconnaissance samples and to aid in rapid examination of known occurrences. Although several qualitative tests for detecting beryllium have been described in the literature,1,2,3, the Patten-Ward4 morin geochemical field method has the advantages of being rapid and being quantitative for minute amounts of beryllium. In addition to the morin field method, Patten, in cooperation with Griffitts, have developed a contact- print method for determining beryllium in hand specimens.5 The semiquantitative method can be used for rapid screening of samples in exploration or reconnaissance work. The use of beads for fusing samples provides a more rapid test, but gives less accurate results than the method developed by Patten and Ward. The semiquantitative method, however, requires less equipment and combines three stock solutions into one reagent for easy application. Estimates of samples in the range from 3 to 1000 ppm varied from about 0.25 to 5 times the actual beryllium content.

ALTHOUGH a large number of X-ray photograms of cold-rolled steel have been published, two circumstances have led to the experimental work reported in this paper. The first is that no complete study, making use of the pole-figure method of Wever1, has been made of cold-rolled low-carbon steel. Wever has published pole figures of mild steel sub-jected to plane parallel deformation1,2 and undoubtedly he has applied the method to cold-rolled mild steel, but the authors have not found these data published. Kurdjumow and Sachs3 have applied the method to the study of rolling and recrystallization textures in electrolytic iron; their results will be referred to later. The reason for this dearth of papers using the pole-figure method is obvious; a greater number of photograms and more analytical work (although this work is quite simple and straight-forward) are required to construct a pole figure than most investigators have felt worth while, despite the fact that no other method of which the authors are aware will satisfactorily depict the orientations of the crystal-lites in a polycrystalline aggregate. The second circumstance that led to the work reported in this paper was the appearance of a paper by Wayne A. Sisson4 on the same subject. In his valuable study of the factors influencing the development of pre-ferred orientations in cold-rolled mild steel, Sisson made one observation that required confirmation; that is, that at some stage of the rolling proc-ess the type of preferred orientation changed from the type that gives a photogram characterized as a "six-point" X-ray pattern to that known as a "four-point" pattern. A similar observation had been made by Tam-mann and Heinzel5, who studied the orientations developed in the rolling of steel by the specular reflection of light from the etched surface of rolled samples. THE SEAL BEACH oil field is between the Long Beach and Huntington Beach oil fields, south of Los Angeles, and about half the productive area is with-in the city limits of Long Beach. The proved area lies in portions of Sections 2, 3 and 11, T. 5 S., R. 12 W., S. B. B. & M. Seal Beach is 'an additional link in that remarkable chain, of oil fields extending from Newport to Beverly . Hills, filling in one of the few remaining gaps. It differs from other fields along this line of folding in that it is an oil field in an area of tide lands. Ocean-connected sloughs have access to this area, which ac-counts for its extensive mud flats. The surface eleva-tion of the low ground varies from 2 to 5 ft. above sea-level. This condition called for much preliminary work in building roads prior to field development. Roads are constructed with dredges and drag-line scrapers, which excavate mud from alongside the proposed road and pile it up to a grade high enough to be above high tide. The road bed is then surfaced with gravel, or decom-posed granite, which makes it serviceable in all kinds of weather. An immense amount of road material has already been hauled into this field. Well locations are staked in the mud flats, sometimes ahead of road build-ing, and material is dragged to its place on the ground by tractor. It is necessary to drive piling to support derrick foundations. The present practice is to drive 5 piles for each derrick leg, 4 under the rotary table, 2 under the draw-works, 2 under the Samson post and 4 under the pipe rack, a total of 32 piles. This pro-cedure is, of course, varied to suit special conditions, using either more or less piling.

Cobalt recovery from arsenical concentrates by pressure leaching and reduction involves special methods and operating problems. Principal steps in the process are auto-oxidation acid leaching under pressure, filtration of the tailings, purification of the solution, hydrogen reduction of the ammoniacal solution, and electrical furnacing for sulfur removal and granulating the metal. Extracting cobalt metal from arsenical ores has presented a major metallurgical problem for many years. In acquiring the Blackbird mine near Salmon City, Idaho in 1943 Calera Mining Co. accepted the challenge to solve this problem.

The Grace mine magnetite deposit, located 2 miles north of Morgantown in Berks County, Pennsylvania, was discovered in 1948 by an aerial magnetometer survey. It is situated on the southern border of the Triassic lowlands section of the Piedmont province. Cambrian sandstones, shales, and limestones overlie Precambrian crystalline rock and were folded and thrust-faulted during the late Paleozoic Appalachian revolution. Late Triassic continental sediments were deposited on the deformed basement rocks and were intruded by Late Triassic diabase dikes and sills before regional tilting and normal faulting occurred. The Grace mine magnetite ore is characteristic of the Cornwall type. The ore has replaced a Cambrian limestone lens isolated between Triassic diabase footwall and Triassic sedimentary rock hanging wall. The ore body is roughly tabular in shape, dips 20° to 30°NE and plunges about 20°N80°E. The ore is granular, fine- to medium-grained, typically consisting of unevenly distributed magnetite in a matrix of light green to white serpentine gangue. Magnetite is the major ore mineral, pyrite and chalcopyrite are common accessory minerals, and pyrrhotite occurs locally. Sphalerite, marcasite, galena, hematite, digenite, and goethite are uncommon. Serpentine, talc, and chlorite are the major gangue minerals; calcite and dolomite are common, and phlogopite, tremolite, and biotite are present locally. Apatite is a common accessory; sphene is rare. Calcium-magnesium silicates were formed first by contact metamorphism of impure limestone by the intruding diabase. Later, the silicates were altered hydrothermally to the serpentine- talc-chlorite assemblage now present. Magnetite, the first ore mineral, formed by replacing serpentine and was followed by pyritepyrrhotite and then by chalcopyrite-galenasphalerite. Marcasite, secondary pyrite, goethite, and hematite are secondary minerals resulting from alteration of pyrrhotite and magnetite. It is estimated that confining pressure was about 1500 bars and the temperature range was 500° to 675°C during ore formation.

Pennsylvania has been a leader in the pageant of industrial America because of her natural mineral re- sources, geographical location, and the ingenuity and industry of her citizens. Brick and other clay products were manufactured in Philadelphia in William Penn's time. Ores of iron, zinc, lead, and copper were mined and smelted in eastern Pennsylvania long before the Revolution. Coal was mined on a commercial basis in the anthracite region as early as 1820 and in the bituminous fields in 1830. The first canals and railroads were constructed to transport minerals and mineral products. Oil was struck at Titusville in 1859. A significant event occurred in 1855-the establishment of the Farmers' High School-Pennsylvania's first attempt to provide higher education for its youth. The Farmers' High School included instruction in geology, mineralogy, and assaying. In 1859 the laws of Pennsylvania transferred to the School the state geological and mineralogical collections formerly located in Harrisburg. Well-informed people are familiar with the effects of the Land-Grant Act of 1862. With inspiring words it established state institutions of higher learning where "the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies . . . to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts . . . in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the sev-

Measurements of the latent heat of transformation from a to 0 titanium were made using a pulse-heating technique. Rapid heating was accomplished electrically by discharging a low-inductance capci-tor hank through a thin-strip specimen. Both high-purity titanium and titanium containing 2700 ppm of 0 were studied. An electrical-resistivity technique and a plot of energy input us temperature rise were used to monitor the phase change. It was concluded that: 1) the latent heat of transformation is 800 i 48 cal per mole; 2) phase change occurred in less than 200 sec; and 3) the percentage phase change that occurs is linearly a function of the energy available for phase change. In addition, this experiment provides a simple and inexpensive method for determining specific heat of electrical conductors over large temperature ranges. The chief advantages of this technique over past pulse-heating experiments are: 1) static measurements of capacitor-bank voltage capacitance and specimen resistance can be made quickly and accurately to determine the energy supplied to the specimen; 2) the specimen is heated so rapidly (10 µ sec) that there is no appreciable heat loss during the heating. THE purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of the capacitor bank as a tool for basic experimental investigations and to determine the rapid phase-change kinetics of titanium. The capacitor provides a number of unique properties: 1) rapid heating rates in the order of l09oC per sec can be obtained; heating rates as slow as l04oC per sec are available by merely adding a given amount of inductance to the circuit; 2) the energy input can be precisely determined and can be varied from several joules to millions of joules, depending on the bank capacitance and voltage; 3) the specimen can be heated uniformly through the thickness and length or non-uniformly, as desired; 4) the apparatus is simple and inexpensive and can be easily altered; 5) the form of the specimen can be wires, sheets, foils, rods, and cylinders; 6) there is great precision in the timing of events; 7) this technique may be readily used in conjunction with rapid cooling.

(written discussion *).-Ad-vantage will be taken of this occasion to mention briefly a form of double potentiometer which has been used at the Bureau of Standards for about 2 1/2 yr. in calibrating thermocouples. The calibrations referred to are those made by comparison to standard couples. In order to insure equality of temperature between the couples, the junctions are fused together; consideration of fundamental principles will show that this introduces no error. Two separate potentiometers are used, one connected to each thermocouple, and each potentiometer is provided with a reflecting galvanometer. The two spots of light are reflected on to a single scale, the galvanometers being set in such a position that the spots coincide on the scale at a point marked zero when the circuits are open or when the potentiometers are balanced. By setting one potentiometer to a desired value and adjusting the other so that both spots pass across the scale together as the temperature rises or falls, simultaneous readings are obtained. By making observations first with a rising temperature and then with a falling temperature, the rates of rise and fall being approximately equal, and taking the means of the results found, several minor errors such as those clue to differences in the time lags of the two systems, etc., are eliminated or greatly reduced. Accurate modeling of the semivariogram is an extremely important step in the geostatistical analysis of mineral deposits. Automatic fitting of a mathematical model is often possible but not necessarily desirable. Significant geologic and statistical information must be taken into account in the fitting process, which is not always available to the computer. Manual model fitting is, on the other hand, extremely time consuming. Interactive graphics are best suited to optimize the process. Many interactive methods are described, which are adapted to modeling semivariogram in one-, two-, or three- dimensional environments.
