DURING the past year or two considerable time and money have been spent in developing equipment for tubing large-volume high-pressure oil and gas wells without loss of production. That the efforts have met with success is proved by the fact that any properly cased well, regardless of its production or regardless of its rock pressure or working pressure, can now be safely tubed with no appreciable loss of production, provided experienced crews handle the new equipment. It is conceded that a far better gas-oil ratio can be secured by flowing a well through tubing of a proper diameter-the diameter of the tubing depending, of course, upon the volume of fluid and gas and the depth of the well-than by the more usual method of installing a choke at the mouth of the well. Where possible it is becoming the practice to bring wells in through tubing, though in the majority of instances this is not feasible. In many instances it has developed, after a well has been brought in through tubing, that the tubing installed is either too large or too small for the most efficient operation or that the well had not been drilled deep enough. The equipment described in this paper, in the hands of experienced men, permits the tubing of these wells after they have been brought in, with the size of tubing then determined by actual observation to be best suited for each particular well, and with no danger of the well getting out of control, of catching fire, of drilling itself deeper, or of any loss of production. The deeper the flowing production with the consequent future higher lifting costs, the more essential it is that the size of tubing used be such as to give the best possible gas-oil ratio. The ability to bring in these deep wells through the casing and then, immediately after their completion, regardless of volume or pressure, to tube them with the size of tubing that permits the most efficient use of the gas present will doubtless save many dollars.

THE prices of crude petroleum and its derivatives have shown an upward trend from 1915 to 1920, and a downward trend from 1920 to 1923, see Table 1. Over the former period, oil prices were dominated by the rapidly increasing demands and inflation incident to the war and its aftermath, while over the latter period oil prices were influenced at the outset by deflation and then by the conditions of overproduction that have characterized the past three years. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the broader features of the more recent price movements in the petroleum industry and to relate these features to basic economic conditions in the industry.

Column leach studies of a low-grade porphyry copper ore were made. The technique used involved alternating oxygen absorption and copper leach cycles. The leach solution was displayed from the column with oxygen. The volume of oxygen reacting with the ore was measured with a gas burette. The copper released as a result of exposure to oxygen was correlated with the oxygen uptake. The oxidation rate was found to be dependent on the pH of the solution wetting the particles and was markedly increased by increasing the temperature of the system. Decreasing the particle size of the sample increased the oxidation rate. A material balance on the system indicated 1 mole of oxygen yielded in excess of 1 mole of copper in solution. A discussion of the important parameters is presented and the results are related to dump leaching in general.

A. J. Langhammer.—That is rather asking a question of the wrong man. However, I will reply to the question from our point of view. There is a considerable amount of iron powder available but the properties vary over a wide range. Powder metallurgy has progressed to the stage where we recognize certain requirements in powdered iron, and what may be a good powdered iron for one application will not necessarily fit the picture for the next one. Further, I believe that there is room for great improvement in the properties of powdered iron. Also, that there is only a limited quantity of powdered iron available having certain specific properties in which we are at the moment interested. F. P. Peters.—May I have a word? With all possible respect to the contributions of the Chrysler Corporation (and they have been tremendous) to the war effort, I think it is easy to get from part of Mr. Langhammer's discussion a false impression of vaster possibilities than really exist. It would be well if in addition to Mr. Langhammer some other manufacturers of machine parts' might tell us in the next few minutes some of the limitations they have found. For example, what is the maximum tensile strength that is being produced in a commercial part in production today? And what is the actual size limitation on bearings that are in operation and are standing up well? We should always bear in mind the fact—and I think Mr. Langhammer will agree with me— that quoting on a particular part does not necessarily mean placing it in production. In many cases it may be several months before the quotation is resolved and we know whether the part can be made. Let us open up this thing for a little free-for-all discussion of some of the ceilings that do exist in the design of machine parts made by powder metallurgy. The ceiling is not unlimited, and Mr. Langhsmmer will agree with that, 3 am sure. H. Hendriks.*—I do not think that there is so much limitation in the making of powder metallurgic manufactured parts as mentioned. Last year we had the problem of making dies for a special machine used in the manufacturing of slide fasteners. This part was wearing out very fast. It was very hard to make, it had to be hobbed out of a special steel and it was a difficult thing to manufacture in general. The tolerances were one half of one thousandth of one inch on all dimensions. We submitted this die to a manufacturer of powder-metal parts. He thought that it was impossible, but we were not as skeptical as he was and decided to try it anyway. The Canadian General Electric Carboloy Division, in Toronto, gave us then the design for the dies, which we made to their specifications. When the first part was delivered, we submitted it to our Inspection Department and its check showed that all the tolerances were right on the dot. They delivered I9 parts of exact specification, then they went off the beam; they could not keep to the tolerances. It took them a long time to get back again. We do not know what happened, but the main point I want to' make is that if a problem is attacked in the right may, the dies are made right and corrected as to dimensions found out by experiment, I do not think that there is so much diffculty in making powder-metal parts to close tolerances.

WE should like to point out that Hu and cline.1 in their study of the recrystallization of titanium, have obtained data which appear very important for accurately determining the dependence of hardness on grain size for this material. It has been proposed2,3 that the macrohardness. H. of a poly crystalline material should depend on its average grain diameter, l. in accordance with the relationship: H =H0 + kHl-1/2 [1] where Ho and kH are experimental constants. This relationship follows from the hardness dependence on yield stress or flow stress4 and. thence. the Hall-Petch stress-grain size relations.5'6 Fig. 1 shows the Diamond Pyramid Hardness. Dph. values vs the reciprocal square root of the average diameter of the recrystallized grains, taken from the titanium data reported by Hu and Cline. The data in this figure give a linear relationship for the hardness over a wider range of grain diameters than anyone has previously measured. The data are not linear, for example. on an I-1 or l-1/3 scale. At the very large grain sizes the data are in reasonable agreement with measurements earlier reported by Holden, Ogden, and Jaffee.7 For the grain sizes smaller than 1 µ, which correspond in Fig. 1 to hardness values greater than 150, the material was reported as not being completely recrystallized and, therefore, these data appear less meaningful as far as the hardness dependence on grain size is concerned. However. it has been suggested by other investigators that deformed materials exhibit strengthening due to an effective grain size refinement even in the unrecrys-tallized condition.8-10 Also. Hu and Cline have shown that a change in texture occurs for titanium during the recrystallization process and. especially. following it. The influence of this texture change on the hardness-grain size relation would be expected to be less than that reflected in the unidirectional stress-strain behavior, even for an hcp material. because of the actual combined stress system which applies for the hardness test. For, at least, certain combined stresses, average values of the orientation factors should still occur in the stress-grain size analysis of a material exhibiting a preferred orientation.' We previously suggested3 that the experimental constants. H0 and kH. from the Meyer hardness-grain size relation should be correlated with the Hall-Petch constants, uoy and ky.5,6 Our recent study" of the Hall-Petch relation and the hardness-grain size results which obtain for a number of polycrystalline materials shows that: The inequality [2] is explained by noting that the hardness should be correlated. perhaps, with the flow stress at some value of strain, as suggested by Dugdale,12 and. also, that the influence of strain on the Hall-Petch relation is to increase uo and not change k very much." Normally. Dph values and Brinell hardness values are nearly equivalent to each other and to the Meyer hardness number. For the case of titanium, then. the inequality [2] may be evaluated using the experimental values of ao = 8.0 kg per sq mm and ky = 1.3 kg per mm3/2 obtained from the experiment of Guard.6,13 Thus, (Ho/uo) = 12 and (kH/k3) = 1.3. The rheological properties of aqueous solutions of several commercial flocculants were investigated using a rotating coaxial cylinder viscometer. Similarities between the pH-apparent viscosity relationship and the flocculating properties of the reagents are discussed here. Synthetic neutral polymers and polyelectrolytes are used extensively as flocculants in mining and chemical engineering operations. The action of these reagents has been interpreted as adsorption of the polymer flocculant to the mineral surface, followed by the formation of physical polymer bridges between the particles.4,5 A consequence of the bridging model is that the efficiency of a polymer flocculant depends on the degree with which the polymer is adsorbed to the mineral surface, and the extent to which the polymer molecule forms a bridge between colliding particles. The length of the polymer molecule and its orientation at the mineral surface are important in the bridging mechanism since the further the polymer segments can protrude from the mineral surface the greater the probability may be of these segments contacting another mineral particle. Linke and Booth7 have shown that, for a silica suspension, both the settling rate at a given polymer addition and the maximum settling rate obtainable increase with increasing molecular weight. THE Mather mine, of the Negaunee Mine Co., is within the limits of the City of Ishpeming, on the Marquette iron- range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is named for William G. Mather, who has served as President, and Chairman of the Board, of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. for well over 50 years. The property comprises nearly the square mile of section 2, T.47 N. R.27 W., which, except for 20 acres in the northeast corner, was leased by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to the Negaunee company. The latter is a partnership of Cleveland-Cliffs and the Bethlehem Steel Co., organized to equip the property, retaining Cliffs in charge as operator. Shipments of ore from this area are mainly through Marquette, which is 16 miles to the northeast on Lake Superior, or through Escanaba, a Lake Michigan port, 65 miles to the south. Cleveland-Cliffs, in 1943, operated 12 mines in the Lake Superior district, with shipments of 6,635,576 tons for the year. GEOLOGY The north footwall of the Marquette Range synclinorium outcrops near the north line of sec. 2, the iron formation dipping to the south at an angle of about 40º. The south side of the trough reappears at a distance of 4 ½ miles on sec. 26 and the surface geology between shows iron formation or intrusive diorites. The latter are harder than most phases of the iron formation and, as a result of glacial action, appear as buttes or low-lying hills. The general elevation of sec. 2 is about 1450 ft. above sea level, or 850ft. above Lake Superior, and the higher diorite outcroppings about 1600 ft. above sea level. The geological structure has been complicated by a series of major and minor faults, one of which may be illustrated by the diorite sheet, which tilts south with the iron formation in the north half of the section and then reappears near the center to repeat this sequence. Sectionally the geological series includes a nearly eroded capping of Goodrich quartzite followed by the considerable thickness of Negaunee iron formation, which is cut by intrusive dikes or diorite sheets, and underlain by the Siamo slates grading into quartzites. The ore deposits occur mainly in troughs formed by the intersection of impervious dikes and the footwall slate, but include locally enriched lenses or bands in the iron formation and also interbedded with the Siamo slate. The ore is a soft red hematite with an indicated dried analysis from the surface drilling to date of 61.50 per cent Fe, 0.134 per cent P, 5.40 per cent Si, 2.87 per cent Al and 0.015 per cent S. Pressure oxidation of gold containing concentrates and ores is an effective pretreatment for liberating refractory gold. This is particularly true when an appreciable portion of the gold is associated with sulfides and is not amenable to conventional cyanidation. A brief review of the literature on pressure oxidation of refractory gold materials is presented. The chemistry of the aqueous oxidation of arsenopyrite and pyrite is discussed. Data obtained on pressure oxidation and subsequent cyanidation of concentrates and ores tested at the Sherritt Research Centre are also presented.

The Industrial Minerals Div., of the AIME meeting scheduled for Nova Scotia Sept. 8-12, 1953, promises to be one of the outstanding gatherings ever attended by the group. Complementing the educational value of technical sessions will be the superb fishing, boating, golfing, and tennis facilities. [ ] Sponsor of the meeting is the Nova Scotia Mining Society. The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Industrial Minerals Div., AIME have been invited to participate. The land immortalized by Longfellow's poem, Evangeline, still contains much of the forest primeval-enough to make it a wonderful vacation spot for delegates and their families. Its scenic beauty is almost unmatched in the area north of the border. Quoting from the Nova Scotia tour book; "Nova Scotia, once known as Acadia, is 374 miles long, from 600 to 100 miles wide ... Excepting the Isthmus of Chignecto, 17.5 miles wide, the province is entirely surrounded by water, no portion being more than 50 miles from the sea . . . has 4625 miles of coastline, guarded by 356 lighthouses and fog alarms. The province is renowned for its picturesque coastline, its harbors dotted with islands, its deep valleys and multitude of beautiful lakes." A progress report on the plans for the meeting will be made monthly. Thus far, technical sessions will be held at Keltic Lodge, Ingonish, N. S. The lodge will also be the starting point for many of the field trips and social events which are in various stages of planning and development.

PROPERTY LOCATION Located in the Copper Creek area of the Galiuro Mountains, the Old Reliable is on ground first claimed for mineral value during the Civil War. The deposit was mined sporatically from 1880 to 1919 and again in 1953 and 1954, with a total of about 30,000 tons of ore removed. The ore body is a near vertical breccia pipe containing approximately 4,000,000 tons of 0.80% copper with mineralization occuring as chalcocite, chalcopyrite, malachite, chalcanthite, and chrysocolla. The host rocks are extrusive lavas of cretaceous age which were intruded and mineralized by Copper Creek Granodiorite, which is Laramide in age. The ore zone, which occurs on the toe of a ridge, is about 300 feet by 600 feet in plan, with the bulk of the deposit extending from the surface to a depth of 500 feet.

IN 1871, two furnaces at the Glendon Iron Works, which had been blown out on account of the "coal strike," were altered from the open-top plan with side flues for collecting the gas, to closed tops with cup and cone. In one furnace the suppression of the side flues permitted a considerable alteration in the profile, but in the other (No. 5) no change in this respect was made; the side flues were simply bricked up and new ones cut through the sides close to the top. This furnace was in blast over four years, and we can, therefore, form a pretty good idea of the effect of the alterations on the furnace process. The principal dimensions are; Height 72'; greatest diameter, 18'; diameter at tuyeres, 8'; diameter of top, 10'; diameter at stock line (point at which the top of the materials is kept), 11'; cubic contents, 11,900 cubic feet. The table below shows the average results for periods of twenty-six weeks each. 1st, of the open-topped furnace; 2d, of the furnace with the first charger used, which was an ordinary cup and cone (diameter of cone 5' 2") 3d, with the charger used ever since, a "double" cone 7' 5" diameter outside, having a central opening 3' in diameter. The diagram (Plate II) shows the daily variations, in the grade of the irons for the same periods.* * In calculating the average grade of each day's iron, each twelve hours was taken by itself whenever more than two kinds of iron were made in the 24 hours, and the diagram drawn accordingly. air-lift and equipped with tapered tubing of proper design, we would have a gas input consumption of about 2500 cu. ft. per bbl., which at 3 to 4c. per 1000 cu. ft. would be 7 1/2 to l0c, per bbl., and there would be very infrequent loss of production due to stoppages. It has been demonstrated that with efficient design of air-gas lift, the production of wells can be increased much beyond that obtained with the former type of air-lift employed; also that small wells can be operated by air-lift with tapered tubing at a cost that places this method in competition with beam pumps in many fields. The next step in conservation that the writer expects to have an opportunity to demonstrate is that of restoring the pressure in a pool and producing by air-gas lift all of the oil possible to lift economically. This combined operation is probably the method toward which we shall eventually be working in recovering the maximum quantity of oil from pools where the oil is recovered through bore holes. General Discussion on the Air-gas Lift H. P. Porter, Tulsa, 0kla.—The papers presented at this meeting contain a great amount of valuable information. Wonderful progress has been shown in the development of air and gas-lifts. There has been nearly everything brought out that touches upon the subject. The real point that is lacking is exact knowledge of the velocity with in the flow column which will produce the best effect—that is the thing we must know more about. Velocity in Gas-lift Flow In other lines of industry the matter of velocity of fluids in pipe lines has been well analyzed and there are known laws by which to calculate velocity of flow; for instance, in irrigation work large pumps are designed with intake pipos to employ an intake velocity of 4 ft. per scc. By reduced cross-sect'ion the velocity is increased rapidly as it enters the pump and the discharge rate is at 12 ft. per src., which in turn is reduced in the discharge column to 4 ft. per sec. Crushed coal, grain and granular material is found to be best conveyed by air when a pneumatic conveyor is employed at 100 ft. per sec. As in the design of a pumping plant or a pneumatic conveyor, the velocity at the lower end of the column in the flowing well must be controlled within certain limits for best results. Mr. Griswold, I believe, stated that they had velocity as low as 15 it. per scc. and from that up to 78 ft. per sec. Mr. Pierce and Mr. Lewis showed an ideal flow column showing how the velocity increased as the fluid was carried up the column, hut did not give any figures as to the velocity. It would be well to take that sort of a diagram to establish an ideal velocity at the lower or intake end, and then calculate the velocity from expansion of the gas as it goes up. It may be that the, ideal intake velocity would vary, depending on the depth of the well, the quantity of liquid to be handled or the pressure which it may be desired to hold. The subject is one that might be worth much research.

A technique is described for preparing finegrained lead telluride by ultrasonic agitation of a solidifying melt. Material prepared by this technique is dense and chemically homogeneous. N-type PbTe, containing 0.03 mole pct PbIz, has been made and its thermoelecCric Properties have been measured as a function of temperature. For comparison, the properties of similarly doped PbTe made by cold pressing and sintering, and by extrusion, have also been measured. The ultrasonically prepared material compares favorably with the others in its thermoelectric-efficiency factor. Comparison of compressive-flow curves for the three kinds of PbTe show that the ulhasonically prepared material has much superior ductility. The cleavage strength of the ultrasonic material is related to the grain size, D, by the Petch relation:Extrapolation to infinite grain diameter yields a fracture strength of 5000 psi for single-crystal PbTe. WHEN metals and semiconductors solidify in a mold they normally assume one of three cast structures illustrated in Fig. 1.' Solidification in a casting starts at the mold walls where a large number of fine crystals of random orientation can be nucleated to form the chill zone. Because of the anisot-ropy of the growth rate, those crystals whose direction of maximum linear growth is parallel to that of the heat flow grow faster and crowd out the crystals of less favorable orientation. A second zone, having a preferred orientation, called the columnar zone, thus forms adjacent to the chill zone. The speed of growth of the columnar grains will depend, in the case of limited undercooling of the melt, on the rate at which heat can be abstracted. The columnar zone can extend to the center of the casting, Fig. l(a), but it is frequently followed, in solid-solution alloys, by another zone of equiaxed randomly oriented grains in the central portion of the casting, Fig. l(b). The equiaxed structure in Fig. l(c) represents the completely grain-refined case where the equiaxed grain size is small. The third type of structure is the most desirable because it imparts a somewhat higher strength for all except high-temperature applications, it reduces segregation of the doping constituent, and it reduces the possibility of hot tearing (the separation of grains due to the melting of a low-melting point constituent in the grain boundaries). In order to obtain fine-grained castings, the nu-cleation frequency must be increased and grain growth must be restricted. Various techniques have been employed for obtaining this end, namely: rapid cooling, vibration, and inoculation of the melt. The success of these techniques depends upon the characteristics of the metal species and on factors controlled by heat transfer through the crucible walls. Recent studies2" have shown that the application of ultrasonic energy to the solidifying ingot is an extremely powerful tool in the improvement of the crystalline structure of metallic castings. Both the mechanical properties and homogeneity of the ingots are improved. Ultrasonic oscillations may affect the crystallization process by 1) permitting subcritical nuclei to agglomerate and thus form nuclei of sufficient size to cause crystallization, 2) changing the state of surface adsorption of various catalysts found in the liquid melt, 3) breaking pieces of solid from the solidified surface near the supercooled region thereby increasing the number of possible nuclei, 4) causing temperature fluctuations to occur in certain parts of the melt thereby increasing the supercooling at specific points in the liquid, and 5) decreasing the critical nucleus size by increasing the pressure at specific points in the melt.' IN the use of free bubbles with precise temperature control and continuous pH measurement, the contact angle apparatus differs from all previous equipment. Experimental procedures differ sharply from the captive bubble method1,2 of introducing the gaseous phase in the three-phase system. When freed from the tube and captured by a solid surface, a bubble more closely conforms to the spherical ideal set up by the usual mathematical analysis of surface free energy or surface tensional relationships of the forces involved. The assembled equipment, Fig. 1, departs from the usual contact angle apparatus in providing: 1) water circulation for fixing temperature, 2) instruments to measure and record pH during testing, and 3) a system for producing and using free bubbles. The apparatus allows testing over a broad range of closely controlled conditions, and the use of free bubbles gives contact angles independent of operator manipulation, which was unavoidable in the older captive bubble method. A bubble released below the specimen rises through the liquid and contacts the mineral. If the mineral is gas-avid the bubble adheres, developing a finite contact angle. Reaction cells (1), 2x33/8x5 3/16 in. ID, are of pyrex glass 5 mm thick. To prevent optical distortion, the sides are optical flats and are planed parallel to within five wave lengths of light over the entire surface. Special cement is required to withstand chemical attack and thermal shock. The cell is placed in a thermal jacket (2) made of welded aluminum. A water seal for the optical ports is made by using O-rings tightened against the flats of the cell by fine-threaded and adjustable ports, Fig. 2. In-flow water is discharged downward from a manifold located near the bottom of the cell jacket. Water overflows the weirs at each end of the cell jacket, discharging from both sides to a collecting manifold (24). A hose (26) leads the overflow water to the thermal-conditioner well (4), which is recessed to accommodate a reaction cell and two beakers (150 ml). Both the thermal jacket and the thermal-conditioner well are insulated to minimize the effects of temperature differentials. Water, discharging from the thermal-conditioner well, returns to a thermostat bath and pump (3), from which it is pumped to the thermal jacket. The thermostat bath permits temperatures to be adjusted from 1" or 2°C to 80°C and will maintain the selected temperature within 0.2ºC. Experimental statistical designs were used at Zortman Mining Company's, Zortman, Montana, heap-leach operation to establish functional relationships between key operating parameters and gold/silver recoveries. Zinc feed rate, lead feed rate, and vacuum (CFM/gpm) account for 64% and 67% of the attainable gold and silver recoveries, respectively.
