The growth of grain boundary films and Widmanstiitten plates of proeutectoid cementite in hypereutectoid steels ulas considered quantitatively in three plain carbon steels and one "pure" iron-carbon alloy. Growth was found to take place at a slower rate than would be predicted on the basis of a model invoking rate control by long range diffusion of carbon. The films in the pure alloy grew faster than those in the plain carbon steels. A possible explanation is suggested. In 1904, Nernsst' and Brunner2 postulated that ionic crystals growing in supersaturated aqueous solutions grew at rates determined by diffusion through the solution to the growing crystal interface. The gradient down which the diffusion took place was assumed to be fixed by the supersaturated bulk solution concentration, the concentration dt the crystal surface and some arbitrary distance. The flux of material to the crystal was described as Flux where D is the diffusion coefficient, A the crystal surface area, Ci the bulk solution concentration, Co the saturated solution concentration, and 6 the thickness of the diffusion zone. It is obvious that the expression is an adaptation of F+ick's3 first law of diffusion (steady state). This was the initial formulation of what will be defined here as "diffusion controlled growth," i.e., growth limited by the long range diffusion of a component either to or from the advancing interface assuming both phases at the interface to be in equilibrium. This idea of equilibrium interface concentration implies an infinite reaction rate at the interface. Volmer, Zener,' and 11schner6 have derived expressions for the diffusion controlled growth of spherical precipitates in metallic systems. These analyses agree that the growth in a given direction should be parabolic with time. Brown and Hawkes7 observed that graphite, formed both from the decomposition of cementite and from the decomposition of eutectoid austenite in cast irons, grew according to a parabolic relationship and, therefore, concluded that the laws of diffusion controlled growth, as defined above, were obeyed. They, among others, failed to consider, however, that parabolic growth is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for diffusion controlled growth. Mehl and Dube"' have pointed out that equilibrium may not be realized because the concentration at the interface cannot change instantaneously from that of the bulk to the saturation value. Furthermore, they propose that an equilibrium solute concentration in the parent phase adjacent to the precipitate would remove the thermodynamic activity gradient across the interface and, thus, stop the growth process. Frisch" has also emphasized the importance of interface concentrations that vary throughout the growth of a new phase. The variation in activity across an interface, as discussed by Onol' and Cahn and Hilliard,12 is of fundamental importance to this question. Ham13 considered the data of Turnbull14 on the growth of barium sulfate in aqueous solutions. He concluded that the data could be analyzed in terms of a radiation-type boundary condition. Flux across interface = K (c, - C,) [21 where C, is the concentration in the solution at the interface, Co the saturated solution concentration, and K the proportionality constant. The edgewise growth of Widmanstlitten plates, frequently referred to as the rate of lengthening, was first considered by Zener.'' Basing a mathematical analysis on steady-state (constant velocity) growth he concluded that where G is the growth rate, D the solute diffusivity, Ci the concentration in the bulk, Co the equilibrium interface concentration, C, the concentration in the precipitate, a a constant, Y the radius of curvature of the edge of the plate, and rC the critical radius, i.e., the radius which would increase the activity of solute at the interface at equilibrium under the influence of capillarity to that of the bulk. Laboratory data .show that the gas-oil ratio performance of non-uniform porosity limestones produced by solution gas drive is sensitive to producing rate and to fluid properties. Nan-uniform porosity limestones are those for which laboratcry solution and external gas drive tests yield considerably different relative permeability ratio characterislics. The oil recovery performance by solution gas drive depends directly on the number of gas bubbles formed. Laboratory rates of pressure decline, which are 100 to 10,000 times greater than normal field rates. cause the formation of an unusually large number of gas bubbles. This results in abnormally high oil recovery efficiencies. Since it is impractical to reproduce the number of bubbles formed under field conditions, laboratory solution gas drive data on non-uniform porosity limestones are therefore not directly applicable to field operations. However, certain laboratory data can be used to make a conservative estimate of field performance. The concepts presented in this paper indicate the possibility that increased field oil recoveries may he obtained from non-uniform porosity limestones by rap- idly reducing reservoir pressure for a short interval of time. It has yet to be established that significant improvements in oil recovery from such reservoirs can he realized by varying the pressure decline rate within limits possible in the field. However, the possibility that recovery may be increased in this manner warrants further study. INTRODUCTION Limestone reservoir rocks can be divided into two general classes according to the nature of their pore space. One class has a comparatively uniform pore system composed mainly of voids between grains of the rock (intergranular type porosity). The other class, in addition to having intergranular porosity, has a secondary pore system composed of combinations of solution cavities, fractures, etc., and is considered to have non-uniform porosity. It has been shown in a previous publication' that the laboratory measured gas-oil flow behavior of uniform type porosity limestones is essentially the same for a test simulating a field solution gas drive as for one simulating an external gas drive. THE definitions of the terms commonly used in connection with metamorphism at elevated temperature near igneous contacts are re-examined. As the study of tactite zones associated with igneous contacts progresses, more and more emphasis is put on the localization of the ore by structural forms. The generally early age of the silicates and late age of the sulphides is well established. Postsilicate structural deformation is likely to localize ore bodies. The silicates are often replaced by the ore minerals. We may not be far from proving that the elements involved in the formation of silicate aureoles are merely normal "volcanic" emanations, that silica, lime, magnesia, and alumina and probably soda and potash are likely to undergo local transfers only. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations.

The regular, bottom-blown Bessemer converter of the present day is a modification of previous forms, and most of the latest proposed modifications of it are merely returns to former types which Ressemer discarded. That he tried almost every conceivable method of blowing iron, with tuyeres at almost every possible position or angle, is well known; and it is to be supposed that he was familiar with the advantages of each type, since he finally settled on that form which has not been improved upon hitherto, for the purposes for which converters will generally be used. Modifications have been tried along two lines: In the arrangement of tuyeres, and in the manner of carrying out the process with tuyeres still blowing vertically upward through the bath. While they have all failed in general competition with the regular modern type of vessel, some of them have found special fields in which they have held their own. The most notable example is in the steel-casting industry, and especially in that part of it concerned with the manufacture of castings which require very hot or very fluid metal, or supply a demand of constantly varying physical or chemical requirements. In this industry the small converters occupy a field between that of the crucible-process and that of the open-hearth process, arid have won a place for themselves in France, England, America, Russia and other countries, which they bid fair to retain until either a new method is discovered of producing cheaply very hot, fluid steel, or the open-hearth process is so improved that very hot steel may be made with it at lower cost of repairs to lining arid roof.

The first Rodpeb mill ever built and placed in full scale successful operation went onstream in mid- 1960 at Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co.'s newly modernized portland cement production plant at Nashville, Tenn. It replaced a third stage of fine crushing and two 7x22-ft Compeb mills in the wet raw slurry grinding department. The Rodpeb mill at Nashville is similar in appearance to a Compeb mill but is larger. The mill, which operates in open circuit, is 9 ft in diameter and 38 ft long. The rod compartment is 12 ft long, with the rods being 11.5 ft in length and ranging in diameter from 4 in. down to about 1 in. The weight of the rod charge is 100,000 lb. The liners of the rod compartment are of the Lorain design.

Ordinarily age-hardening is thought of as being associated with a limited solubility of one metal in another. Much less has been written about the type of age-hardening that attends the formation of superstructures. Solid solutions generally have a disordered or random arrangement of atoms; that is to say, in a unit cell, such as that of the face-centered cubic lattice, there is no distinction between atomic sites. Atoms of a given metal may occupy cube corners or face centers. Under certain conditions, however, some alloys develop what is known as an ordered structure. In this case, cube corners would be occupied by only one type of atom and face centers by another type. Associated with this ordering process are many interesting changes in physical and electrical properties. Moreover, in many instances the alloys become susceptible to age-hardening. From the evidence now to be described, it appears that age-hardening in 14-carat gold alloys is due to the formation of both a superstructure and a precipitate. Alloys of the metals gold, silver and copper were known in antiquity. The available knowledge regarding their constitution has been ably summarized and extended by Sterner-Rainer,' Jänecke,2 Carter,3 Wise,4 and Coleman.5 Despite the long familiarity with these alloys and the numerous investigations of their properties that have been made, there is still much that remains unexplained. It has been known for a long time that the hardness of these alloys is closely related to the rate of cooling. Similar changes have been observed in the binary gold-copper systemI6 one alloy of which corresponding to the formula CU³AU, has been the subject of a careful and competent report by the English investigators, Sykes and Evans.7 They have established the fact that the shift of atoms from the ordered to the disordered condition takes place in some critical temperature range. At temperatures above the critical range the structure is random, and at temperatures below it the structure is ordered. No difference between these two structures is revealed by the microscope. Both have a face-centered cubic lattice and complete solubility, so that there is no evidence to suggest that the changes in properties are associated with a phase change. The more slowly the alloy is cooled, the higher is the degree to which the ordering process proceeds and the more marked is the increase in hardness. As experimental data were accumulated on I4-carat gold alloys, several contradictions arose. Certain observations tended to confirm the existence of a superstructure, while other observations seemed to be inconsistent with such a transformation. INE operators have a choice of several classi- fications of mechanical loaders. Within each classification there are many types and makes available. Table I lists loaders on which manufacturing data as to operating characteristics are available. This paper discusses the conditions met in a mine as they affect these characteristics. It is assumed that management will provide satisfactory engineering, supervision, power, maintenance, loader service within a concentration of workings, and a balanced working cycle served by balanced production equipment. These are factors which affect the optimum operational efficiency of a loader. The conditions which determine loader choice are: Height of Vein—The main limitation to the use of a loading machine is the height to which the vein is mined; i.e. a loader cannot be higher than the place in which it is to work unless rock is taken. Since there are several low vein loaders being developed and successfully applied, this does not appear to be a requisite of an efficient mining operation. The maximum useable height of a loader should be equal to the working seam thickness less a working clearance for travel and operation. A—Working seam thickness = B—Artificial roof support thickness = C—Safe headroom below support = (generally about 6 in.) H is a loadability factor and is important because the clearance over the top of the conveyor chain to the roof or roof support must be greater than the largest broken particle or else the particle and/or the conveyor chain may be broken. From this standpoint it might be desirable to use a lower height machine even though it may have a smaller capacity, though this is warranted only when increased lump realization offsets lower man-day and machine pro- duction rates. Ivan Given has stated, "Loading should not be handicapped by securing lump only to grind it in the breaker." Width of Working Place—The width of a working place is the greatest width a place may be safely driven. The working place includes not only the face but the roads the loader must tram when mucking out more than one face. The width is limited by the system of placing props with sufficient room between them for the machine runner (about 2 ft). Maximum width of place in which the loader will operate at maximum efficiency is determined by the type of mounting. With track-mounted loaders, maximum width of place is determined by maximum angular swing of the loading head and proximity of track to the face. The use of double track leads to added expense and operational complexities. Several mines that have used double-track systems have found that a substantial saving is made by the use of machines that load out wider places. Trackless loaders may work in rooms of any maximum width. Minimum width of place in which a loader will operate is determined by width of the loader plus a safe movement area for the operator. Often a barodynamic study of the mine will show that either an increase in room width and/or a change in the system of propping may be made by using roof bolting, full or part-width room timbers, removable aluminum I-beams at the face, etc. Increasing the width of a working place will, in general, increase loader operating efficiency by providing more material per fall and by decreasing the preparation and moving time per ton. A change in the system of propping that would increase the minimum width might permit the use of a higher capacity loader with safer working conditions. Proper face tirnbering is necessary to insure safety from roof falls and because the speed of preparation and loading generally increases since the men work with greater assurance and there is less chance of kicking out posts. In 1827, chromite was discovered near Baltimore by Isaac Tyson, Jr., who initiated the mining of chrome ore an:! later (1845) .the manufacture of chromium compounds in this country. From 1828 to about 1860 the United States, supplanting Russia, supplied chromite for most of the world. Chrome deposits were found also in California, and the Tyson Company shipped ore to Philadelphia by way of Cape Horn. In 1848, J. Lawrence Smith, an American in the employ of the Porte, discovered large bodies of chromite in Asia Minor. They were developed in 1865 and became the chief source of the world's supply for a number of years. The discovery of the large high-grade bodies in New Caledonia, and later in Rhodesia, with other foreign sources, gives at present an abundant supply for all demands. For a number of years before the great war, the United States produced only a few hundred tons of chromite annually, for local use, but during the war the demand for domestic ore resulted in a production of more than 82,000 long tons of crude ore in 1918, and it was demonstrated that the United States has reserve deposits equal to a war demand of several years' duration. Now that the war is over, the country is conserving its domestic supplies by employing higher-grade but cheaper ore from foreign countries. Rf sputtered quartz has been successfully used in multilayer interconnects for MOS devices. The target potential was 2000 v peak to peak with a frequency of 13.56 Mc per sec. The sputtering rate was approximately 60A per min with an operating pressure of argon gas at 10 to 15 p. The dielectric strength is 8.0 x 10' v per cm and the pinhole density is less than 2 x 10-2 per sq mm. Infrared absorption peaks for the Si-O vibrational bands we at 9.4, 12.4, and at 22.5 p. The etch rate of the sputtered SiO2 is 1200A per min. MOS devices have been fabricated using multilayer interconnects with no degradation of electrical characteristics. MULTILAYER interconnects require an insdating film between the metal layers which can be deposited below any potential eutectic temperature. Sputtered Si4, which can be deposited with substrate temperatures below 200°C, satisfactorily meets the multilayer insulation requirements and has been used to prepare MOS circuits with multilayer interconnects. The pH control system at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Nevada Mines Division concentrator consists of two independent systems, lime dilution and lime addition. Lime dilution is accomplished in a mixing tank where slaked lime and water are introduced proportionately. The desired dilution of the milk of lime is determined by the electrical inputs provided by eight pH probes, one per grinding section. The inputs are averaged and applied to a time base generator. The summation output of the time base generator determines the proportion of lime and water that are to be mixed and applies this input to a voltage sensitive switching device. The switching device provides a signal to one of two relays which will add either slaked lime or water, dependent upon the summation output. The entire cycle is based on a 2-min repetition rate to allow for sufficient mix time. Responsivity is controlled by maintaing a limited maximum solution level in the mix tank. Lime addition is controlled independently within each grinding section. The electrical input from the pH probe in a given section controls the solenoid valves which provide lime to each of the ball mills. The valves remain open within a time range capable of maintaining the pH of flotation feed at a given set point.

On Feb. 16, 1948, the Board of Directors of NME authorized the publishing of "Technical Notes" in METALS TECHNOLOGY. The purpose is to provide prompt publication of very short items of the following general types: I. Results of short investigations which do not warrant a paper. 2. The conclusions of extensive investigations of insufficient general interest to justify a regular paper. 3. Conclusions arising in the course of an investigation, which, because of interest to others in the field, the author wishes to present prior to completion of the investigation. 4. Pertinent factual comment (not mere argument) on the subject matter of previous "Notes." Such Notes will be subject to the approval of the Auxiliary and AIME Publications Committees, but can be handled more promptly than regular papers because they need not be referred to readers. The recommended maxi- mum length is 500 words; notes in excess of 1,000 words will not be considered for this type of publication. A graph or photograph may be included as part of the note when particularly illustrative. As with regular papers, contributions to the new section should be submitted to the Secretary of the AIME. Please furnish two copies each complete with illustrations.

The Bureau of Mines has used various sizes of core barrels above 2 in. and below 10 in. in diameter to core manganese, potash, coal, brown iron ore and bauxite. The paper describes in some detail the methods and types of equipment used to obtain maximum sampling accuracy. Introduction On December 11, 1946, R. D. Longyear, in his capacity as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Exploration Drilling, wrote the author requesting him to prepare a paper presenting the collective ideas of engineers in the Bureau of Mines on the design, standardization and application of core barrels using diamonds or other hard cutting media for drilling holes larger than two inches and less than ten inches in diameter. In subsequent correspondence it was indicated that similar papers covering the experience of other government agencies would be solicited and all such papers received would be combined in a symposium on the subject for discussion at the March 1947 meeting of the Mining Methods Committee AIME. In soliciting such information from other Bureau engineers, it developed that most Bureau experience had been confined to standard core size, two inches or less in diameter, and that larger sizes had been used only for special purposes. It is hoped the data contained herein will be of help to other operators in solving problems encountered in the field. Acknowledgments This paper was made possible by the request of Lowell B. Within the past few years, particularly because of the rapid growth of the airplane industry during the war, considerable attention has been paid to the manufacture of light-wall cold-drawn seamless and welded steel tubing for structural purposes. While the manufacture of such tubing is not, in itself, a difficult matter, some difficulties have been encountered in producing the same under specifications requiring definite physical properties. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods of manufacture and the properties that may be obtained by such methods for tubing coming within about 1/2 to 2 in. (12.7 to 50.8 mm.) outside diameter and 10 to 22 Birmingham wire gage (0.134 to 0.028 in. wall thickness). Such tubing is largely used as structural material in the aircraft industry, and it is of the utmost importance that the physical and chemical properties should be known, and also that the various factors entering into the manufacture should be under such control as to allow these properties to be varied and held within definite limits. In general, tubing may be divided into four classes: namely, specialty tubing, such as riveted-sheet or plate, lock jointed, etc.; brazed tubing; welded tubing; and seamless tubing. Welded tubing may be divided into hot product, such as lap welded and butt welded, and cold product, such as acetylene and electric welded. Seamless tubing may be hot rolled or cold drawn. Specialty Tubing The first two classes present mainly mechanical or structural engineering problems. A simple form of tube is made by riveting together the overlapping edges of rolled sheets or plates formed into a cylinder. Because of the nature of its construction, such a tube is necessarily limited to relatively large sizes. Lock-jointed tubing is produced by passing low-carbon strip through a forming machine having suitable rolls and dies, its manufacture is almost entirely a question of design of the forming machine and its satisfactory operation. The chief application of such tubing is in the manufacture of bedsteads.

Slip-line studies on deformed chromium single cvystals showed the usual bcc behavior. At room temperatuve, cross slip was prevalent—slip was not confined to a given plane, but the slip direction was (111). At -10O0K, slip occuvred on (110) planes, twins on(112) planes, and cleavage on (1001 planes. A single-crystal tensile specimen with an axis close to [011] showed a pronounced yield drop and high strain rate sensitivity which zclere used to derive relevant parame tevs in a dislocation dynamics treatment. Transmission electron microscope studies confirmed the existence of (110) slip planes and showed ecidence of loops punched out by precipitates and of grown-in dislocations promoting tangling. OF recent years experimental studies have been made of the deformation characteristics of single-crystal molybdenum and tungsten, but very little has been published on the behavior of single-crystal chromium. During a study of the mechanical properties of chromium, single-crystal studies were made which have already been partially described.&apos; However, additional information was generated which was not directly relevant to the main theme of Ref. 1, and, therefore, was not reported. In view of the need for complete documentation of deformation modes, the experimental observations made on the deformation of single-crystal chromium are summarized here, together with an electron-microscope study of the associated dislocation structures. It was found that, in terms of the deformation modes, chromium is a conventional bcc metal, showing a very pronounced yield-point phenomenon. Further, it was found that the flow strength of these crystals is very sensitive to the strain rate. Finally, the crystals were observed to contain many unidentified precipitates, which often were associated with prismatic dislocation loops. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Single crystals were grown from rods of wrought chromium by the method of zone annealing. Rods of "1/4in.-diam were supported vertically in an argon atmosphere while an induction coil was moved up the rod at 1 in. per hr. The power was adjusted to just below that required for melting, and the process produced single crystals in about 30 pct of the rods used. The orientations of the crystals, in general, lay near [011] and are summarized in Fig. 1. Before this treatment, the wrought material contained 35 pprn C, 68 ppm O, and 12 ppm N.* An analyzed single crystal *Usual metallic impurities found in iodide chromium are: Al, 5 ppm; Ca, A ppm; Cu, 2 ppm; Fe, 75 ppm; Yg, 0.5 ppm; Yn, < 3 ppm; Mo, < 3 ppm; Ni, 4 ppm; Si, < 20 ppm; Ti, < 1 ppm; V, 4 ppm; Zr, < 3 ppm. contained 10 pprn C, 79 ppm O, and 50 pprn N. Tension and compression specimens were shaped from the crystals by mechanical grinding, followed by the electrolytic removal of about 0.010 in. from the surface in a perchloric/acetic acid bath. All specimens had a gage length of 0.75 in., and tension specimens had a diameter of 0.100 in., while that of the compression samples was 0.200 in. Mechanical tests were carried out at a rate of 1.3 pct per min, and temperatures below 0°C were attained by means of a nitrogen cryostat similar to that of Wessel.2 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Modes of Deformation. In addition to the tensile properties of these crystals, which are described in Ref. 1, deformation markings on the surface were studied. Crystals A and F, Fig. 1, were deformed in tension at 300°K to 10 and 16 pct strain, respectively. The surfaces contained visible slip lines, about 1 C( apart, composed of both straight and wavy segments. They did not define a single plane, and so determination of the slip plane was not possible. DuXing 1942, Louisiana attained the rank of fourth among the great oil-producing states of this country. Its present prominent position is the result of an orderly and systematic program of exploitation with emphasis on conservation. Even before the functioning of M-68, the Federal spacing order, development and production in Louisiana were regulated by various acts of legislation, the most recent of which and by far the most effective is Act 157 of 1940. Under the authority of this act, it has been possible for the Department of Conservation to hold many public hearings and thereby to secure data and evidence regarding the feasibility of issuing rules and regulations for development of various oil and gas fields in the state. As a result of information compiled at such public hearings, many orders have been issued by the Commissioner of Conservation that have in most cases provided reasonable solutions to the problems that arise in the exploitation and development of fields in this state. Probably one of the most effective powers granted the Commissioner of Conservation in the state of Louisiana has been the authority to provide for fieldwide unitiza-tion and pooling of condensate fields. This has led to the erection of huge cycling plants in Louisiana, which permit the most efficient recovery of the liquid content of the reservoirs, and further conserve most of the gas reserve that undoubtedly will be of considerable future value. Many months have passed since various orders of the Department of Conservation were put into effect, and all are accomplishing their purpose; namely, the elimination of waste. Although the effectiveness of these orders provides considerable satisfaction to the members of the Department of Conservation, it is also a tribute to the members of the oil and gas industry in Louisiana, who, in addition to providing carefully prepared technical data, have also given unstinting cooperation and have thereby enabled the Department to cope intelligently with the many problems. Production On Dec. 31, 1942, oil and/or gas was being produced in 50 parishes, or 78 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 12 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. This is indeed an enviable record for any state. However, it is reasonable to assume that eventually all parishes in the state of Louisiana will be productive. From a geological viewpoint, there is no apparent reason to assume otherwise—a point that a11 operators seeking oil and gas production in this state may well bear in mind. Twenty new fields were found during 1942—a rate of discovery that does not compare favorably with the 30 new fields found during 1941. The record of discoveries in Louisiana during 1942 is further disappointing when it is realized that 8 of the 20 new fields discovered were gas fields. An apparatus has been developed which permits selective acidizing of producing formations and determination of the relative permeability of a formation by fluid injection. This apparatus, known as the "Electric Pilot," is an electrical fluid-interface locator, the electrical circuit of which is completed when the elec-tcodes in the well are in contact with a conductive fluid, but is not completed when immersed in a nonconductive fluid. Results are given for a number of typical acidizing applications in which the interface locator was used to control the acid. Description of the method used in making a permeability survey and the data obtained are also included. Introduction Early in the development of the acidizing industry it was recognized that one of the most important problems to be solved in the chemical treatment of any well was the determination of what part of the exposed section in the well should be treated and the selection of the technique that would insure treatment of the desired section. One of the first techniques adopted for assisting in proper placement of the acid, which is still widely used, is the method of confining the acid to the producing section by means of a column of oil, which is known as the Carr1 method of treatment, named for its inventor. In the Carr method it is not possible to selectively acidize a specific horizon in a multiple pay zone, so many improvements and modifications of the basic Carr technique were devised to accomplish this result. In order to overcome the possibility of the acid entering an undesirable section at the bottom of the well, organic gel plugs2 were introduced into the bottom of the well, which served to halt the entrance of the treating solution into these zones.3 These chemical gels later liquefied because of bacterial action and were removed from the well with the produced fluid. In fields where a gas cap existed, as in the Goldsmith field of Ector County, Texas) it was imperative that a treating technique be evolved that would confine the acid to the oil-producing zone below the gas cap. By so doing the oil-productive capacity of the wells could be improved without greatly increasing the gas production and this would lower the gas-oil ratio of the well. ~h, technique employed4 to achieve this effect utilized two pumps, one for pumping the chemicals down the tubing, the other to simultaneously force oil down the annular space to confine the acid to the oil pay, thus preventing the chemicals from entering the upper gas-bearing zones. Experience has indicated that gas wells and certain types of oil wells respond better to &apos;&apos;stage treating.&apos;&apos; This technique utilizes the introduction of a certain volume of acid and then allows the well to &apos;&apos;clean up99 before introduction of the next and usually successively larger stages. Where such methods are employed steps must be taken to keep a disproportionate share of the acid from entering the most permeable and previously treated Zones. A special tool

The geophysicist is interested greatly in the resistivities of different formations or parts of the earth&apos;s crust; sometimes he is interested in a single figure in the nature of an average, or what may be called the effective resistivity, of all the formations or parts of the crust at a given location to a certain depth. Conversely, the engineer whose work is concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines in such a manner as to avoid electrical interference between these two types of facilities is concerned very much with this effective resistivity; to a lesser extent he is interested in the resistivities of individual formations. In connection with his work the coordination engineer often estimates the effective resistivity of the earth from measurements of the mutual impedances of lines; in other instances he derives from measurements of a different type the resistivities of different layers of the crust and synthesizes these to obtain an estimate of the effective resistivity. In connection with problems concerning the coordination of power and telephone lines, measurements from which earth resistivities can be estimated have been made at many points in the United States by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and its associated companies, in cooperation with various power companies and with railroad companies having electrified sections of line. Other such measurements have been made by the Joint Subcommittee on Development and Research of the Edison Electric Institute and the Bell Telephone System. A study has been made of the correlation of these data with the ages and types of materials of the strata of the earth&apos;s crust at each of the test locations. The purpose of this study has been primarily to provide information to assist in predicting the order of magnitude of effective resistivities to be used in the preliminary consideration of problems concerned with the coordination of power and communication lines. To make the results of such a study most useful, it is essential that the geological data to be secured when such a prediction is wanted be readily obtainable.
