THE defect in wire known as "cuppiness" has appeared and disappeared from time to time but the exact cause of its appearance or disappearance has not heretofore been known definitely. This defect is not limited to one particular metal or alloy but seems to be found at various times in all of the materials that are drawn into wire. Fig. 1 represents cuppy wire made from an aluminum alloy and Fig. 2 illustrates copper wire that became cuppy in drawing without intermediate annealing. Differences of opinion are current among the manufacturers of wire and in the literature (see Bibliography at end of paper), some believing that the source of the trouble lies in segregation in the wire rod, oxides, sulfides, slag, etc. ; others that the trouble is created by an unevenness of stress distribution across the section of the wire, usually thought of as being a function of die shape. All of the published work is of a qualitative rather than a quantitative nature. With this in mind, it was deemed advisable to make a study of the shape of the wire-drawing dies, as well as the oxygen content of the copper to be drawn.

Heats of solution of gold and copper in dilute Au-Cu-Sn alloys have been determined using a liquid metal solution calorimeter. The self-interaction coefficient, Au - has been calculated at constant copper concentrations and n cu has likewise been determined at constant gold contents. Good experimental agreement is obtained between the interaction coefficients and nAu Cc thus demonsbating the reliability of the measured heat values. The measured data are compared with the Predictions of certain solution models. In previous publications,1,2 the results of calori-metric investigations of dilute Ag-Au-Sn and Ag-Cu-Sn alloys have been presented. The present work on the Au-Cu-Sn system concludes a program of studies of enthalpy interaction coefficients in dilute alloys of the Group IB metals with tin. Since the definition and derivation of an enthalpy interaction coefficient has been discussed previously,1,2 no restatement of this theory will be presented here. From the determination of the partial heat of solution of gold and copper in ternary alloys of various copper and gold contents, values of the interaction coefficients can be calculated. These coefficients give an insight into the various solute interactions that occur in the liquid solutions since changes in their magnitude and sign reflect bonding changes that are taking place in alloys of varying solute contents. EXPERIMENTAL Details of the design and operation of the liquid metal solution calorimeter used in this work may be found in a paper by Poo1.3 For the present studies copper of 99.999 pct purity was supplied by American Smelting and Refining Co., gold of 99.999 pct purity by A. D. Mackay, Inc., and tin of 99.99 pct purity by Baker Chemical Co. At the commencement of each series of experimental drops, a tin solvent bath consisting of between 70 and 90 g of the pure metal was inserted in the calorimeter. The weight of the bath was accurately determined and to it were added appropriate amounts of gold or copper to give alloys of the desired composition. For determinations of approximately 0.0015 g-atom samples of Cu were used and for measurements of ?HAu approximately 0.0025 g-atom additions of Au. The heat capacity of the bath was determined at regular intervals during a series of drops using tin calibration samples. Measurements were made of the heat of solution of copper in alloys containing a constant 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 mole fraction of Au, respectively, in order to determine ?HCu in each alloy, and the same mole fractions of copper were used to determine equivalent values for nAu at constant copper concentrations. The composition of the bath was maintained at the desired constant gold or copper content by making calculated additions of the appropriate solute throughout the experiments. The limiting values ?HAu in alloys of constant copper content and of %c, in alloys of constant gold content were studied as a function of the mole fraction of copper or gold respectively in order to determine and nCu. Heat content and heat capacity data used in calculating values of ?ºHAu and ?HCu at the experimental temperature of 720°K were obtained from Hultgren et a1.4 ' RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Determinations of ?HAu. The partial heat of solution of gold in pure tin as a function of gold concentration was determined in the previous study of dilute Ag-Au-Sn alloys1 and can be represented by the least-squares expression: ?HAu(l) =-8075 + 2413xAu [l] which is valid between XAu= 0.00 and xAu = 0.05. The standard error in the constant term, which represents the partial heat of solution of gold at infinite dilution in tin,?HºAu(l)is 35 cal per g-atom, while the standard deviation of the slope, which represents n Au is ± 619 cal per- agtom. Corresponding expressions for ?HAu(l) in alloys containing constant mole fractions of 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04 copper were obtained from the data listed in Table I and are themselves given in Table II. Fig. 1 illustrates the partial heat of solution of gold as a function of its concentration in each of the alloys. For the four alloys of constant copper concentration, the values obtained for ?HºAU(l) (in order of increasing copper content) are -8141 i 36 cal per g-atom, -8210 ± 42 cal per g-atom, -8202 ± 46 cal per g-atom and -8268 ± 51 cal per g-atom. The corresponding values of the self-interaction coefficient, n Au, for these alloys are 3103 * 644 cal per g-atom, 2425 ± 676 cal per g-atom, 2574 * 717 cal per g-atom and 2523 ± 899 cal per g-atom. In Fig. 2 these values of n Au are plotted as a function of the copper content of the alloys and are seen to remain approximately constant within the experimental limits. The addition of increasing, small amounts of copper to dilute binary Au-Sn alloys thus has no apparent effect on Au-Au interactions in these dilute liquid solutions, although more exothermic values of ?HºAu(l) do result from an increase in the copper content of the alloys. Analogous behavior was observed with additions of silver to dilute Au-Sn alloys.' By

During the last few years the compila-tion of formation logs from rotary well cuttings has become common practice among petroleum geologists. This meth-od has undoubtedly furnished a great amount of information valuable for both scientific and commercial purposes. How-ever, in spite of its great usefulness it has certain drawbacks, principally in the contamination of cuttings by cavings. In extreme cases this contamination can reach such proportions that it is next to impossible to draw conclusions with any degree of certainty as to the nature of the formations penetrated by the drill. This difficulty was frequently encoun-tered during the development of the Okla-homa City Field. In many cases where Wilcox sand-the most prolific sand of this field-was drilled, the samples con-sisted almost entirely of shale cavings with only traces of sand. In order to obtain more reliable knowl-edge of the formations encountered while drilling it is therefore necessary to resort to more coring, and above all to improve our present methods of coring. With this in mind a study has been made of the results of coring in the Oklahoma City Field, and the present article is mainly confined to a statistical analysis of the relation between recovery, diameter of cores and drill pipe, length of cores and a few other factors. Most of the coring in the Oklahoma City Field was done during the early part of, the development. A total of around 18,000 feet or 0.3 per cent of the total footage drilled before February, 1932, has been cored, and about 80 per bent of the cores were taken in the Simpson formation at a depth below 6,000 feet.

With a total value to date of well over $200,000.000.00 for its ore production, the Tintic mining district, which is about 100 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, ranks as one of the three main ore producing areas of Utah. In it are located the biggest silver mines of the country, silver having been the chief metal produced in the camp since its start. Tintic's silver production to date has a total value of over $1 00,000,000, approximately half of the value of the camp's ore production, the balance being roughly divided among lead, gold and copper. Discovery of the camp was made in the late sixties. Lack of transportation and ore reduction facilities delayed extensive development of the area for nearly a decade. In recent years Tintic's ore production has ranged from 350,000 to 400,000 tons annually. In 1924 the camp produced one-eighth of the silver produced in the nation with an output of 7,729,700 ounces. Its lead production was 77,765,000 pounds and its gold production 26,285 ounces.

The purpose of this study is to present the results of a detailed survey of the financial and operating aspects of 30 oil companies comprising a major sample of the American petroleum industry. This review supplements a previous paper entitled "Capital Flow and Capital Formation in the Petroleum Industry, 1934-1941,"a and deals not only with a longer period but also gives new and more revealing analyses of the capital movements and characteristics. The data are gathered from published financial statements of the companies, especially the annual reports to stockholders and Form 10-K to the Securities and Exchange Commission, supplemented by confidential information. The 30 oil companies covered by this study are listed on the leading stock exchanges and for the purpose of analysis are grouped as follows: 9 companiesb engaged principally in crude production, 4 companiesc with production averaging in excess of refinery requirements, and 17 companiesd with refinery throughput in excess of crude production. These samples are sufficiently broad and representative to constitute norms against which individual company performances may be profitably compared. The 30 companies in 1942 produced 54 per cent of the Nation's total output of crude oil and refined 79 per cent of the country's crude run to stills. The financial data apply predominantly to the domestic oil business, although 15 of the companies have investments and operate facilities in foreign countries. The net value of these foreign holdings amounted to 724 million dollars, or 12 per cent, of the combined net assets of the 30 oil companies at December 31, 1942.

Tungsten ingots with and without small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium were prepared by conventional powder-metallurgy techniques and hot-rolled to 0.001-in.-thick sheet. The ingots were rolled three different ways: I) initially cross-rolled, then straight-rolled; 2) straight-rolled, and 3) straig-ht-rolled, then cross-rolled. Total reductions were 99.8 pct. Samples of the sheet were annealed, in vacuo, at temperatures from 1200" to 2200°C. Substructures and textures were determined by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The doping agents were found to form particles of mullite (Al,Si,O,,) which, on rolling., appear to form strings of particles aligned parallel to the rolling direction. These strings of purticles are associated with an increase in the recrystal-lizution temperature from 1400°C for undoped sheet ThE addition of small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium to tungsten has a profound effect on the grain structure of drawn and recrystallized wire.'" The grains generally do not occupy the entire cross section of the wire and have lengths many times the wire diameter. The grain boundaries are, in general, nearly parallel to the wire axis and have long ''fingers" projecting one into the other as may be seen in Fig. 1, a longitudinal section of recrystallized doped wire. When unsuitable additions or no additions are made or the wire is not sufficiently reduced during draw- to 2000°C for doped sheet. The particles also limit lateral grain growth while allowing growth parallel to the rolling direction. This results in the formation by primary re crystallization of large highly elongated grains of specific preferred orientation. The undoped sheet recrystallized to small equiaxed gains. The preferred orientations of the large grains were determined from axis density plots to be (113) (691). (0i3) (362), (116) (304) types for the initially cross-rolled then straight rolled material. These orientations are similar to the orientations of the large elongated grains in doped and heavily drawn tungsten wire. The nucleation of the large grains appears to occur by recovery of certain of the polygonized regions of specific orientation, followed by strain-induced boundary migration.

THE new 4800-ton fine-grinding plant at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines property at Timmins, in the Porcupine district of northern Ontario, went into operation in November 1937, and represents the culmination of an experimental program. The plant is a moderately low rectangular building of hollow tile on a steel frame, large enough to house four 7 by 15-ft. ball mills, with a 12 by 27-ft. classifier beside each mill. At one end is space for the addi-tion of another mill and classifier or a mill and classifier for the regrinding of table concentrates. This regrinding is now done in the old grinding department of the main mill building. Also within the new building are the four 6-in. sand pumps for lifting the product from the low-dis-charge ball mills up to the classifier feed launders and the containers and appurtenances of a complete dust-collecting system. Together with the usual overhead crane, these constitute the major units of equipment within the new plant. The location is at the lower end of the main mill buildings toward the old tailings pond, now so neatly leveled off and sodded to rival the very best of our own W.P.A. projects. Close by the new grinding plant is a large dome-shaped structure-the new fine-ore bin designed and built by Mr. Longmore and the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs. There are four separate automatically loaded inclined belt conveyors leading up from the bottom of the bin to the grinding plant. Each belt is equipped with a recording weightometer, in the grinding building. The whole structure and the machinery within it give the impression of permanence and a carefully integrated design with close attention to details, giving the operators every advantage for consistently good work.

ONE of the features of the annual meeting was a round table conference on carbon in pig iron, on Feb. 16. This was presided over by R. H. Sweetser, and the discussion, which was so interesting as to require holding an additional session in the after-noon, ranged over such a wide field that only a brief outline of it will be attempted here. The full discus-sion together with the papers will be printed later. The first paper was one on the need for research in foundry pig iron (1648-C) by Richard Moldenke, who pointed out the trend in present practice of attaining low cost in pig iron production by hotter blast, addi-tion of. scrap to the blast furnace, and. the enormous increase in the output per furnace day. He pointed out that remelting processes are oxidizing processes, to some degree at least, and the metal cannot be given the deoxidizing finish which is characteristic of the steel-making process. The trend today is toward specifying total carbon content in foundry pig irons, and since the carbon content depends on a variety of factors, he suggested that the blast-furnace men and the foundry men study the question and agree on a minimum of total carbon for the given silicon ranges. The discussion of this paper was participated in by E. J. Lowry, Robert Jones, T. L. Joseph,. R. H. Sweet-ser, J. G. Ferguson, W. B. Coleman, E. P. Ross and D. J. Demorest and ranged from a comparison of the total carbon used in making a ton of pig iron in charcoal practice versus coke practice to a discussion of the bad effects observable from the use of scrap This paper was followed by one on carbon character-istics of copper-bearing pig iron by W.. B. Coleman. In view of the belief in many foundries that copper-bear-ing pig iron made trouble in the foundry, experiments were made by adding copper in various amounts up to 1 per cent and with the cooperation of the Robesonia Iron Co. a large number of tests were made over a run of foundry iron. The final conclusion was that the ad-dition of less than 1 per cent metallic copper did not seem to alter the physical properties and that a blast furnace using copper-bearing ore can produce pig iron suitable for making small castings, showing low-Brinell hardness test, good transverse and deflection tests, and high-total carbon.

IT is indeed an honor and a responsibility to have been selected to present the thirty-fourth in this series of Henry Marion Howe lectures, established to perpetuate the memory of a great teacher and one of America's outstanding scientists. Previous Howe lecturers have established high standards for this annual AIME event. It has been my good fortune to have enjoyed close association with five of these former lecturers; namely, Bain, Grossmann, Johnston, Sosman, and Vilella, all of whom have been prominently identified with the research activities of the organization with which I am connected. Some years ago I had an opportunity to examine a letter written by Professor Howe in 1904. This document was particularly interesting to me since I never had the privilege of personal acquaintance with Professor Howe and do not recall even having seen him during his long and active career. In view of the fact that the letter dealt, to some extent, with matters related to the subject of today's lecture, I would like to quote briefly from it. The letter is datelined, "Bad Kissingen, June 11, 1904." The salutation reads, "Dear Bradley," which suggests that it was probably addressed to Bradley Stoughton, who, I believe, was working with Howe at Columbia University at that time. The letter reads, in part, as follows: "Austenite and Martensite. I have not examined what Osmond says in his new book. His former remarks about austenite I found very confusing, indeed unintelligible. I think we can reconcile matters well enough for the present by assuming that martensite is a transition step between austenite at one end and ferrite and cementite at the other. Above critical range for steel of 0 to 1.80 carbon, austenite is normal state; below Ar1, ferrite and cementite are normal." The letter then continues with a discussion of Osmond's ideas on metallographic nomenclature, particularly his use of the terms martensite, troostite, and sorbite, including the following pointed comment: "For common purposes it seems to me unwise to drag them in, and much simpler to confine ourselves to the end stages Austenite Ferrite plus Cementite Osmond does not really know his own mind— or does not clarify his ideas to others—as to nomenclature." Cycling operations have been successfully conducted in the La Gloria Zone for eight years. The cycling of this zone is now virtually completed. It is proposed that this report shall review the cycling operations of this reservoir so that the industry can more accurately evaluate the cycling process as a production method. The La Gloria project is one of the largest cycling operations in the State of Texas. The gas rights in the field are unitized in three operating units. By mutual agreement Magnolia Petroleum is the designated operator of the project for the 12 operators owning the gas rights. The La Gloria Corp, is the owner and operator of the cycling plant. The development and operation of the field are under the direction of an Operators Committee comprised of a representative of each operator. The Operators Committee is assisted by an Engineering and Geological Sub-Committee. The La Gloria gas field is situated approximately three miles north of Fal-furrias, Tex., and lies principally in the extreme south end of Jim Wells County, with its outer limits extending into the north end of Brookes County, Tex. It is a simple elliptically-shaped dome which has a closure of 350 ft. The field encompasses a surface area of 5,500 acres. The gas reserves are found in 20

An attempt has been made to compare the influences of the two most widely used depressants—alkalis and sodium cyanide—and the most widely used activator—copper sulfate—on the air-mineral contact induced by five sulfur-bearing compounds: (1) sodium di-ethyl dithio-phosphate (sodium Aerofloat); (2) potassium ethyl xanthate; (3) sodium di-ethyl dithiocarbamate; (4) potassium iso-amyl xanthate; (5) potassium di-n-amyl dithiocarbamate. Three different organic types are included in lhis group and for two of these types a higher and a lower homologue have been tested. The study of potassium ethyl xanthate, the preliminary results of which have been described,' was continued until there had been obtained a comprehensive account of the influence of variations in pH value and in the concentrations of xanthate, sodium cyanide and copper sulfate on the adsorption of this xanthate by galena, sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. With concentrations of copper sulfate and collector that the work with ethyl xanthate indicated would give the most illuminating. results, the other four collectors were tested, in a less exhaustive way. The same general principles determine the influence of alkalis, cyanide and copper sulfate, no matter to which type the collector belongs, but there is a gradation in the quantitative measure of such influence. In the list above, the five collectors are cited in the order of their capacity to withstand the depressants, sodium Aerofloat being the least resistant, potassium di-n-amyl dithiocarbamate the most resistant. This order coincides substantially with that of the solubilities of the heavy metal salts formed by double decomposition with the collectors, those formed from sodium Aerofloat being most soluble. There is little difference between the third and fourth members of the series, and under certain conditions their positions are reversed. In general, then, of the three types of collectors investigated, the dithiophosphate type is most easily influenced by depressants, and the

INVESTIGATION of the methods of analyses for magnetite and ilmenite in the Otanmäki iron-titanium ore and respective mill products has resulted in certain improvements in the methods conventionally employed. The outcome of the investigations is summarized as follows: 1-Development of a diamond-drill core analyser for the determination of magnetic susceptibility of drill cores containing magnetic minerals. 2-Development of a magnetite-ilmenite analyser for pulverized products. 3-Development of a potentiometric method of chemical analysis for the determination of iron, vanadium, and titanium in succeeding steps from one test sample. 4-Proposal for a continuous and automatic magnetite assay method.

In the author's previous paper an attempt was made to analyze in detail the gravitational effects arising from certain subterranean anomalies of simple form, and extending to infinity in three directions. As a result of this critical examination, certain features—which were considered to be characteristic of the anomalies under investigation—were disclosed, a close observance of which enables a complete interpretation to be reached. The most simple case was first considered; viz., that of a heavy horizontal plate, bounded above and below by horizontal planes, and extending to infinity on one side of a vertical plane containing the y axis, in the three directions + y, —y, and +x. After this, the investigation was extended to the case of a similar infinite horizontal block having an inclined face. In each case the form and behavior of the gradient curve and the curve of differential curvature were analyzed, and entirely distinct interpretations were put forward, based upon (1) the gradient, (2) the differential curvature and (3) a comparison of these two quantities. In continuation of the previous work, and as a preliminary to further analysis of more complex structures, certain factors will now be examined which characterize (1) the simple infinite vertical block and (2) an infinite block which is inclined to the vertical, formations which are of considerable practical interest, being typical of important. geological structures—intru-sive dikes, lodes, veins, etc.—and because, even though in nature these may be irregular, valuable guides to a more complete interpretation are obtained by assuming, as a first approximation, that they have the simple characteristics to be studied hereafter. In the previous paper certain preliminary assumptions were made in order to render the resulting deductions universally applicable and entirely independent of the particular scale employed. Coal companies in the anthracite region are studying various methods of mining, seeking one that will shorten considerably the life of the gangway and thus decrease the maintenance charges. In steep pitching measures, the maintenance charges of the gangways are high because of the cost of replacing timbers and cleaning up falls. Therefore, if the length of the gangways can be decreased and the mining made more concentrated, the life of the coal gangways will be decreased and the maintenance charges per ton of coal produced will be smaller. The practice in the anthracite region is to drive long coal gangways and to work the breasts as the gangway from which they were driven is advanced. In many cases these gangways are from 4000 to 6000 ft. in length; and some are even longer. As these must be maintained not only until they have reached their limit but until second mining begins (which may be some years later), the maintenance charges are high. If the gangway is allowed to close, when the time comes to remove the pillars the cost of re-opening it may be as expensive as the original driving cost. The Lehigh and Wilkes-Barre Coal Co., at its Wanamie Colliery at Wanamie, Pa., has been using a system of mining that, as far as the writer knows, is not used in any other place in the anthracite fields. Calculations are reported on the differential sensitivity of the updip invasion of oil strata of varving permeability to the driving pressure differential. It is assumed that the water-oil interfaces advance with sharp fronts, or that the microscopic displacement efficiency is independent of rate and capillary pressure effects. It is found that, under such conditions, limitations of withdrawal rates will not greatly inhibit the "fingering" and bypassing tendency through high permeability strata unless the differential fluid head across the original oil column is of the order of or exceeds about 80 per cent of the driving pressure differential. In practice, such restrictions will be feasible only for oil reservoirs and aquifers of high permeability and dip, but may develop automatically under combined gas injection and water drive operations. INTRODUCTION A commonly expressed view regarding the intrusion of edge-waters into oil producing formations is that the geometry of such advance is rate sensitive. Specifically, it has been suggested that high rates of advance, stimulated by rapid withdrawals, will lead to "fingering" and an irregular type of invasion, whereas at low withdrawal rates the water encroachment will be more uniform. Two factors tend to support this view. One is the resultant effect of capillary pressure and gravity gradients in the displacement processes' involved in water intrusion, which are magnified at low rates of flow so as to improve the recovery efficiency. The other is the direct retarding effect of the rising water head as it advances upslope into the producing area. Capillary pressure forces give rise to a rate sensitivity of the oil recovery by water displacement in uniform strata as well as differential effects in non-uniform formations. These are basically independent of the effect of gravity and would also occur in horizontal beds or when the oil and water have the same density. Unfortunately, however, the fundamental equation describing the displacement process under the action of capillary pressures can be solved only by numerical or graphical procedures, and moreover the solutions are sensitive to the character of the capillary pressure and relative permeability curves.* On the other hand, the direct effect of gravity can be given a formal analytical solution if the simplifying assumption is introduced that the water advances with sharp fronts in the individual uniform strata. It depends on the absolute permeabilities of the water invaded zones and hence results in a rate sensitivity of the differential invasion in stratified media. Although a tieatment of this factor alone will not give a complete evaluation of the effect of rate on water intrusion in non-uniform pays, it should provide at least a semiquantitative measure of the sensitivity of "fingering" to withdrawal rate. Such a treatment will be presented in the following sections. GENERAL THEORY The basic element of the theory is the history of water advance updip in a uniform stratum (Fig. 1).
