INTRODUCTION Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy) Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. The data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. Dragline vs. Bucket-line Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 106 gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new 7-cu. ft, bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and in operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ Per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These Percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind- The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft- (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. Yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10 gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costin 4¢ Per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ Per cu. yd. Because of small yardage, new equipment is not warranted, therefore we can assume that the dredges of both types are used equip-ment, fully depreciated. Dismantling, mov-

The scope of this paper is the description of two districts in Peru in which deposits of vanadium have been found, and the consideration of much laboratory-work that I and others have done to determine the nature of these deposits. It is with regret that I present some of the data in a state of evident incompletion, particularly the analyses of a few of the minerals, which leaves some doubt as to whether the true nature of the migerals is understood. I make no apology, however, since in this case, as in many others referring to ore-deposits, conclusive opinions cannot be stated until a great amount of work has been done, and the deposit has been thoroughly exploited. I believe that the data and the tentative conclusions here presented indicate a unique and interesting condition which may assist others in work along similar lines; arid further, what is of more practical importance, stimulate a search for a metal which, though long considered rare, is probably so merely because proper care has not been taken to recognize it. An excellent bibliography on the occurrence of vanadium in nature is given by I?. W. Clarke in his paper, Data of Geochemistry;' and in the preparation of this paper 1 have consulted many of the references contained in the Bibliography of the Chemistry of Vanadium, by M. Moisan.2 A brief review of the subject having special reference to the metallurgy of vanadium is contained in the small book by P. The resistivity anomaly known as the K state was studied in Ni-Mo alloys containing 10.5 and 14.0 at. pct Mo. Both these alloys exhibit a large K effect which depends on the mechanical and thermal treatment. On the basis of X-ray diffuse scattering studies which were correlated with resistivity measurements, it appears that the K state in dilute Ni-Mo alloys can be associated with changes in the degree of short-range order within the a phase. An interesting phenomenon that has received much attention in recent years is the K state. The K state is marked by anomalous changes in some of the physical properties of certain alloys without the occurrence of observable microscopic structural changes. One of the early pieces of work in this area was by Thomas' who studied alloys of Ni-Cr, Ni-Cu, Ni-Cu-Zn, Fe-A1, Fe-Si, and Ni-A1. Upon annealing specimens which had been previously cold-worked or quenched from an elevated temperature he found an anomalous increase in resistivity over a certain temperature range. He also found that specimens which had been appropriately annealed to develop the K state showed a decrease in resistivity upon subsequent cold working. These effects are opposite to those found in normal alloys. Although the resistivity anomaly has been rather arbitrarily taken as the "definition" of the K state, there are several other interesting effects which accompany the resistivity increase. In Ni-Cr alloys,2, 3 for example, it was found that the hardness increases with increasing resistivity. It was also found that specimens which have been treated to develop the K state can be cold-worked for as much as an 80 pct reduction of area without an increase in the hardness. In Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys4 the K state is accompanied by an increase in flow stress and by a lattice contraction. In Ni-A1 alloys,5 specimens which have been treated to develop the K state also show an increase in elastic modulus. In Ag-Pd alloys6 the increased resistivity observed on annealing a cold-worked specimen is accompanied by an increase in the thermoelectric power and an increase in the Hall coefficient. The explanations of the K state phenomena are varied and depend upon the particular alloy in question. Several theories have been advanced to explain the increased conductivity with cold work on the basis of changes in the electronic configuration of the alloy as a result of local lattice distortions.7"9 Most investigators, however, believe that some type of local order in the solid solution, either short-range order (SRO) or clustering, is responsible for this effect. Theories concerning the relationship between ordering and the K state have for the most part been speculative, since there is little direct X-ray evidence that can be correlated with the above property changes. Much of the previous work on the K state was done in the Ni-Cr system where the small difference in the X-ray atomic scattering factors of the components nickel and chromium makes it very difficult to use X-ray diffuse-scattering measurements to determine the role of local order. In the Ni-A1 system, however, Starke et al.10 succeeded in detecting a connection between local order and the K state. It was found that a small but measurable K effect correlated with increasing SRO in the nickel-rich a phase. The manner in which local order might increase the resistivity of K state alloys is not completely clear. Since most of the known K state alloys contain at least one transition element, significance has frequently been attached to the presence of an unfilled d shell. It has been suggested that during the formation of the K state the number of conduction electrons decreases as a result of the transfer of s electrons to the d shell where they are more tightly bound.1'11'12 Koster and Rocholl13 have proposed that SRO can cause an increase in resistivity for alloy systems in which the number and mobility of charge carriers are reduced when the percent solute is increased. According to this hypothesis, the local environment of a given solvent atom changes in the same manner with increasing percent solute as it does with an increasing degree of SRO; hence the change in physical properties should tend in the same direction. In this hypothesis, SRO is considered only in a statistical sense, and the increased resistivity of the K state is attributed to a change in the mean distribution of electrons and holes in the s and d states as a result of SRO. From the work of Chen and Nicholson on Ag-Pd alloys,6 it appears that the K state can occur in systems for which the d shell is completely filled. These investigators explained the increased resistivity by picturing the SRO as small domains of some form of long-range order (LRO). According to ~ibson,'~ the number of effective electrons can be reduced by the creation of a new Brillouin zone boundary near the Fermi surface of an alloy as a result of the changing crystallographic symmetry that accompanies the formation of a superlattice. This idea may be expressed in terms of the superzone concept.15 In the present work the role of local order in the formation of the K state in Ni-Mo alloys was investigated. The principal tools used in this study were X-ray diffuse scattering and electrical resistivity measurements; however, these data were supplemented by electron microscopic and field-ion microscopic data. The purpose of the work was to determine whether or not the K state in Ni-Mo alloys can indeed be attributed to the formation of SRO as has been proposed by previous investigators.

THE magnetic method of prospecting is well suited to determination of faulting in the basement rock. In addition to establishing the horizontal position of the fault, it often furnishes valuable information concerning the depth and amount of faulting. Consider a simple case of a vertical fault, represented in cross-section in Fig. 1. Let A A' represent the plane of observation (ordinarily the surface of the earth), and BB'B"B"' the upper surface of the basement. Assume that the sedimentary rocks are nonmagnetic, so that the magnetic susceptibility of the material above the basement is zero. Let k indicate the susceptibility of the basement rock, c the density contrast between it and the neighboring sedimentary rocks, and the amount of vertical displacement. Fig. 1 shows the material, indicated by cross- hatching, which gives rise to the magnetic anomaly. In most cases it can be assumed that is small compared to the thickness of the sedimentary rocks. The semi-infinite, rectangular slab of rock of susceptibility k, density contrast , and thickness t may then be replaced by a semi-infinite sheet CC' of mass t per unit area at depth 2 (the mean depth of the slab). Nettleton 1 states that this approximation results in an error of less than 2 pct for the computed gravitational field intensity when t is as great as 2/2 and decreases rapidly for smaller values of t. By a theorem of Poisson, the magnetic field intensity can be determined readily from the gravitational field. The theorem states that W = (I/) • (U/i) i1 [1] where W is the magnetic potential associated with the structure, I is the intensity of magnetization which is assumed to have the direction of the inducing field, ? is the constant of gravitation, the density contrast, U the gravitational potential associated with the structure, i the direction of the inducing magnetic field, and i1 a unit vector in that direction. SUMMARY MERCURY is one of the strategic metals of which the supply has been raised from critical uncertainty to more than enough for essential demands. Work by the Bureau of Mines has contributed substantially to increased production of mercury in the United States and to consequent accumulation of Government stocks. Other contributing factors have been higher prices for mercury and Government loans to operators. The Bureau has undertaken 13 exploration projects, 10 of which have been completed. This work has comprised 28,376 ft. of several types of drilling and 23,798 lin. ft. of surface trenching, and has indicated commercial ore containing 34,800 flasks of mercury and marginal ore containing 26,200 flasks, a total of 61,000 flasks; equivalent, respectively, to domestic production for 8 months, 6 months, and 14 months. As Government stocks are now adequate, domestic production (currently at the rate of 50,000 flasks per year) is gradually being curtailed through Government control of labor and operating supplies.

In the course of a recent investigation1 to develop a more satisfactory white-metal bearing alloy, a number of alloy systems were studied. The cadmium-nickel system showed characteristics desirable in a bearing alloy, and the system was therefore studied in some detail. Experimental Method Alloying cadmium with nickel offered no serious difficulty. After melting the cadmium, clean sheet nickel was added while the temperature was maintained at 500" to 600" C. A few crystals of ammonium chloride2 served to clean the nickel when the latter did not "wet" readily. In preparing the individual alloys for thermal and microscopic investigation, a "hardener" containing about 10 per cent nickel was used. Thermal Experiments and Apparatus Time-temperature cooling curves were made by standard methods. Globe electrolytic cadmium was added to the hardener to make a melt of the desired composition weighing between 100 and 200 grams. This charge was placed in a Pyrex test tube, 1 by 10 in., closed with a rubber stopper carrying a thermocouple sheath and quartz stirring rod. The assembly was lowered to a depth of about 4½ in. into an electric resistance pot furnace containing a No. 0000 clay-graphite crucible (to catch the melt in case of a break in the test tube). After the tube was clamped in this position, an asbestos-magnesia mixture was loosely packed in the furnace around the tube and a "halved" cover of transite placed on top. This left at least 5 in. of the test tube protruding from the furnace. When the alloy had melted, the thermocouple was adjusted so that the hot junction was l! in. from the bottom of the test tube. The melt was stirred thoroughly for several minutes to insure composition homogeneity and absence of thermal gradients.

Previous studies have demonstrated the possibility of using aqua regia-extractable copper and zinc in plutonic rocks in exploration geochemistry. The present investigation compares this method of extraction with hydrofluoric-perchloric acid attack and bisulfate fusion in terms of precision and discrimination between high and low concentrations. Statistical treatment of data shows that the overall performance of the aqua regia method compares very favorably with other methods of attack.

THE aluminum oxide known as corundum has several varieties that have been used as gem materials since ancient times. These include the red variety called ruby, the blue variety sapphire, and the asteriated types of ruby and sapphire. Asteriated sapphire was known to the ancients under the name of astrios, and descriptions of this gem were given by Pliny and other early writers. The relation of these gem materials to each other as varieties of a single species, corundum, was first clearly established by Haüy in 1805 and J. M. Güthe1 in 1809. Natural gem corundum is obtained principally in Ceylon, Siam, Burma, India, and Australia. Star sapphires and rubies always have been highly prized and in recent years have become particularly popular in the United States. Natural star rubies of large size and fine quality are extremely rare and rank with large and fine emeralds and diamonds as the most valuable of gem stones. Interest thus attaches to the recent success in commercially synthesizing star sapphires and rubies of a size and perfection unmatched by nature.

THE test of the English cupellation furnace should be so supported that the cupeller can change readily the elevation of the test, and at the same time watch the litharge channel. It is also important to raise or lower either side, independently of the other, in me of uneven wear of the side walls or of the breast. If the refined silver is poured from the test, it is much better to control the lowering of the test from the front than to raise the back by screws or a lever. In order to enable the cupeller to manipulate the test with one hand, when the litharge is running, and to pour the refined silver from the test without aid, I have altered the common support to the test, as shown in the accompanying drawing. The common method of supporting the test is by four screws, working in cross-bar nuts beneath the test. The points of the screws set, into the test plate upon which the test rests. These screws are usually worked by pounding or pulling upon the heads, which may be either small pulleys or straight bars, as shown on the back screws in the drawing. AMONG the feldspar-rocks there are certain types which occur constantly in different areas-viz., the aruphibolitic plagioclase- rocks and the granulitic rocks Composed of quartz and alkaline feldspars. Among the latter soda: granulites as well as potash are met with; also the corresponding gneisses occur. GROUP I.-THE ORES OF THE ARCHEAN CRYSTALLINE SCHISTS. The Rocks. The ore-bearing rocks of the ore-province of central Sweden are chemically and petrographically unlike the more monotonous gneiss- and granite-areas which surround them. On the whole, they constitute a quartz-feldspar formation in which purer quartzitic rocks, limestones, " skarn " rocks, and ore-bodies are very subordinate members. (Skarn is the Swedish name for rocks of varying composition, mostly consisting of lime, magnesia, iron, and alumina, silicates of the pyroxene, amphibole, and garnet groups; as secondary minerals, epidote, chlorite, biotite, and talc occur. The skarn is scarcely an independent rock but is connected with the ore-deposits. It is formed through an interchange between the silica of the quartz-feldspar rocks and the basic constituents of the ore-formation.) [A BRIDGED SUMMARY.-The amphibolites must be considered as stretched and dynamo-metamorphosed dioritic rocks. R. S. Shoemaker: Our first question is, is there a need for a grizzly before a primary crusher? What is its effect on crusher capacity and crusher maintenance? Is it worth the extra capital cost in a crusher installation? Vincent: ASARCO has a grizzly at Mission. Utah Copper uses grizzlies ahead of their gyratories. There is some quite abrasive ore at Mission, an argillite type of rock, which has a work index of 16.5 to 20, which is getting up toward the taconite classification. We get a life of 12- 16 million tons per set of concaves or per mantle with the grizzly ahead of the crusher. At Duval Corp., some 6 miles to the south of Mission, their crusher installation on a good, hard rock does not have a grizzly, and the last information I had is they get a life of about 2 ½ -3 million tons on their mantle and concave. At Silver Bell, our other copper unit in Arizona, they do not have a grizzly ahead of the gyratory and there they get a life of about 5-6 million tons. At Utah Copper, which we all know is a fairly soft ore, relatively speaking, they get a life of 24-27 million tons with grizzlies ahead of the crushers. I think a grizzly has a very definite effect on the life of the mantle and the concaves. As far as a jaw crusher is concerned, I think that usually it is desirable to have a grizzly if it is properly designed, which means it is self- cleaning. Otherwise I would not like to see one in the circuit.

AT the meeting of January 28 which was held too late to be reported in the February MINING AND METAL-LURGY, Messrs. Taylor, Barron, Bassett, DeGolyer, Hutchinson, Norris, Rand, Reynders, Smith, Sweetser and Callow were present. Aside from routine matters, relating to finances and membership,, the Board author-ized establishment of a payroll account and payment by check. It also approved plans for a regional meeting to be, held at Cleveland on April 19 and 20 under the auspices of the Ohio Section and the Iron and Steel Committee. Following a report from the Committee on increase of Membership, Messrs. Barron, Bassett, and Sweetser were appointed as a special committee to con-sider the feasibility of increasing the dues. Mr. Read was made secretary of this Committee. A pleasant feature of the meeting was the presence of past-presi-dent Olcott and the presentation by him to the Institute of an elaborate scrap book, covering the excursion through Mexico made by the Institute in 1901. The meeting was preceded by a dinner at which Scott Turner spoke of the problems of the Bureau of Mines and the large volume of service work for the govern-ment it was now called on to perform. M. L. Requa discussed the need of more exact data covering our national reserve of minerals. E. N. Cooper gave a vivid picture of conditions in Mexico. W. H. Bassett told of the problems before the Institute of Metals, and Zay Jeffries told of the plans for that Division now being formulated. Max W. Ball reinforced what Mr. Requa had said relative to the importance and value of conservation studies as relates to minerals.

The second-order, nonlinear, partial- dillerential equation representing the transient radial flow of gas - condensate fluids in reservoirs has been integmted by using finite -dillerence equations and electronic computers. Effect was given to pressure -dependent permeability, viscosity, and compressibility and to distance-dependent permeability. The influence of a second-degree velocity term in the Darcy equation was investigated. Implicit methods were used and practical, convergent solutions were obtained with material balance to less than 6 x 10-4 for recovery of one- hall the reserve at constant flow rate. Integration results provide the productive period of a reservoir for a given constant rate and the fraction of the fluid initially in place that can be recovered in that period. The properties of a lean and a rich fluid are represented in a set of integrations designed to demonstrate the effect of different constant-recovery rates and significant variables emphasized one at a time. INTRODUCTION A method is needed for computing the availability or reserve of a gas in a formation, making use of all technical and engineering information that is pertinent. As a step in this direction, a program for computing transient linear flow1 was developed that utilizes principles of earlier finite-difference computing for a similar purpose2-4 and gives effect to significant pressure- and distance-dependent properties of reservoirs and their contents. The present paper pertains to transient, radial flow of gas-condensate fluids. In the partial-differential equation of flow, effect is given to the variables viscosity and compressibility,5 and also to permeability. Included in the study is the quadratic form of the Darcy equation of flow that has been the subject of field tests6 and that has been applied to a gas with constant properties in transient flow computing. 7 Inclusion in the differential equation of variable coefficients to represent properties greatly complicates the higher derivatives of the equation. Because it was impractical to make a required improvement in certain of the finite-difference derivatives by Taylor-series expansion, five-term derivatives were used in the implicit computing. Related methods were developed that can improve general facility in manipulating finite-difference equations. The relationships between mineral deposits and various plate margin mechanisms are examined under the constraints of radiogenic isotopes and other geochemical indicators. It seems like1 y that: (1) deposits of the spreading ridge association are fairly ubiquitious through most of geologic history and can be recognized by the lithologic assemblage and primitive lead isotope ratios; (2) most metals in the island arc association are not derived entirely from a subducting oceanic plate, and have a partly continental affinity; (3) subduction beneath a continental plate generates ores which are derived either from the downgoing plate or from the lower crust; (4) the heating of a continental plate by thickening or by mantle plumes may develop a metallogenic province involving extraction of metals from the curst; (5) rifts and grabens developing thick sections of marine sediments with evaporites may be the locus of base metal mineralization by movement of reducing brine solutions resulting from diagenesis and bacterial reduction of sulfates

This paper deals with the methods of mining the high-grade clays of California. The fact that the majority of the clay pits in the state are operated on a scale that is small by comparison with most metal mines causes a diversity of methods and gives rise to problems of selection of the method best suited to given conditions. Two or three operators in California produce approximately 500 tons per day of a single kind of clay from a single pit. About five varieties of clay are mined on a scale of 200 to 400 tons per day; not over 15 varieties are mined on a scale of 50 to 200 tons per day; and more than 50 varieties are mined at the rate of less than 50 tons per day. It is the aim of this paper to delimit, as far as the data at hand permit, the conditions and scale of operations that favor the selection of each dominant method of mining that is actually being applied at California properties. Details of the occurrence and utilization of the clays of California have been given in a recent bulletin1 and will not be considered here. Geographical and Geological Features of California Clay Deposits The greater part of the high-grade clays consumed by clay-working plants in California is mined from one of three producing areas in the state: (1) Lincoln, Placer County, on the eastern edge of the Sacramento valley, 30 miles northeast of Sacramento; (2) Ione, Amador County, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, 38 miles northeast of Stockton, and 12 miles west of Jackson, one of the important towns of the famous Mother Lode gold-mining district; and (3) Alberhill, Riverside County, 90 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Other districts of minor importance are near Cardiff and Carlsbad, San Diego County, and El Toro and San Juan Capistrano, Orange County. In addition, there are a number of isolated properties in various parts of the state.

As part of an over-all laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing ad other techniques for a more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or a batch of pellets has been developed. Through this test, it has been shown that dry fracture load is directly proportional to bentonite content in batches of pellets, but inversely propor tional to bentonite content in individual pellets of the same batch. This apparent paradox is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that large pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than small pellets. In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors found large variations in the results of strength tests on closely sized pellets from the same batch.' Reasons advanced for such variations in the quality of pellets in which the binder is bentonite were the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Even when resulting pellet strength is good, there is still the question of whether the same strength could have been attained through a more effective use of a smaller amount of bentonite. The authors' own and other studies 2-3 have pointed out the strong dependence of pellet strength on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder.
