The fact that iron expands when heated, until fusion takes place, and that molten iron is consequently less dense than solid iron of the same grade, is now universally admitted. It was proved by the extensive experiments of Mr. Thomas Wrightson, reported in the Jownal of the Iron and Steel Institute (1890, No. 1, p. 72, and 1891, No. 1, pp. 75, log), and, in a manner, is illustrated in heavy founding by the shrinkage 'of the molten metal, which must be " fed " in order to obtain solid castings. This decrease in volume requiring " feeding" while the metal is still liquid I call " shrinkage," applying the term " contraction" to the decrease in volume which takes place after solidification, while the iron is cooling to atmospheric temperature. The light-work founder, not having the opportunity to make heavy castings, in which shrinkage can be observed, is apt to confound the two; but they are in fact distinct, and are separated by an act of expanion, which takes place at the moment of solidification. The fact of this expansion was first practically demonstrated by Mr. John R. Whitney, of Philadelphia, Pa., whose experiments are recorded in the National Car and Locomotive Builder of May, 1889. Experiments recently made by the writer indicate that there is a constant relation between this expansion and the preceding shrinkage and forcibly demonstrate the necessity of " feeding " a casting to make its interior solid. This is a matter with which all makers and users of castings have experienced difficulty. The founder being heretofore unable to define correctly the principles involving the urgent necessity of " feeding " has failed to impress the moulder with its importance in making sound castings.

Specimens of Inconel-X alloy solution-treated at 2050°F and aged for periods of 1, 10, 100, and 1000 hr at 1200°, 1400°, and 1600°F have been examined by electron microscopy and by electron and X-ray diffraction. Four minor phases were identified: titanium nitride, niobium nitride, an M23C6 complex carbide, and the intermetallic ? phase. The two nitrides were found in all of the aged specimens and in the solution-treated alloy, the y' phase formed at all aging temperatures, while the M23C6 carbide formed only on aging at 1200° and 1400°F. Variations in the hardness, rupture strength, creep strength, and yield strength of the alloy have been shown to be related to variation in the size and distribution of the particles of the y' phase within the matrix grains of the alloy, with maximum values of these properties occurring when there is a maximum amount of the phase present and a fine state of dispersion of the particles prevails. THE nickel-chromium alloys containing titanium and aluminum are widely used in applications requiring high strength at elevated temperatures. Studies on relatively simple ternary and quaternary alloys'-4 have indicated that the favorable high-temperature properties of these alloys are related to the precipitation of an intermetallic ?'-phase having a structure based On that of the Ni3A1 phase of the nickel-aluminum system. The present investigation was undertaken to identify the minor phases and to study the microstructural changes occurring in one of the more complex commercial alloys as a result of aging in the service temperature range, with particular emphasis on investigating the role of the ?' -phase. The microstructural changes were studied by electron microscopy and the minor phases were identified by X-ray and electron diffraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS Inconel-X alloy was selected for this investigation because the previous studies of Frey, Freeman, and white6 provided extensive information on the variations in metallurgical properties of this alloy resulting from high-temperature aging treatments. Specimens aged 1, 10, 100, and 1000 hr at 1200°, 1400°, and 1600°F were made available for the present use. These were taken from 1-in. round-bar stock of a commercial heat having the following weight composition: 0.04 C, 0.56 Mn, 6.59 Fe, 0.007 S, 0.38 Si, 0.03 Cu, 73.22 Ni, 14.97 Cr, 0.78 Al, 2.38 Ti, and 1-02 Nb. They were solutjon-treated at 2050 for 4 hr and then water-quenched prior to aging. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained from insoluble minor phases which were separated from the alloys by digestion in the reagent of Mahla and Nielsen.6 Back-reflection patterns were obtained from electrolytically polished surfaces of the bulk search to detect the ?'-phase' Cu-K a radiation was used in both cases. The manufacture of coke in Peru, as practiced at the coalmines of the Quishuarcancha and Goyllarisquisca districts, is intermediate between the primitive coke-heap and the bee-hive oven. The method of coking is quite simple. In constructing the coal-heap, preparatory to burning, the ground is first leveled, and a simple stack of stone and clay is built, giving the bottom, to a height of 6 ft., approximately 6 ft. of external diameter. The size of the stack varies in different districts, but is generally 9 ft. high, and slightly smaller at the top than at the bottom. The walls of the heap are from 12 to 14 in. thick, which allows an inside diameter of from 3.75 to 4 ft. These walls are pierced at intervals by three or more tiers of openings or flues, connected with the central flue. The radial flues have a diameter of about 5 in. and are built with a gentle upward slope. The stack (shown in Fig. 1) is permanent; and in this respect the practice in Peru differs from other primitive practices in which nothing is permanent except the yard. Above the permanent 6-ft. portion of the stack there is added a cap of clay, about 3 ft. high, which contracts toward the top, where it has an inside diameter of about 2 ft. This clay cap is temporary, and frequently has to be renewed after each burning. Before charging the coal, there are first built, from the lowest tier of flues upon the ground, a number of temporary flues, leading from the central stack out to the edge of the coal-heap, and constructed of blocks of coal for the greater part of the distauce, the outer edge alone being of rough stoue. First, the forecasted shortage of iron ore in the world led to the fabulous discoveries in the Pilbara district of Western Australia. Now, the demand for nickel has generated even more interest among mining companies in the vast, untapped potential of Australia.

PRECISE knowledge regarding the effect of heat treatment on the properties of steel has made possible the detailed specifications and instructions covering optimum heat-treating temperatures and practices that are in current use. A distinct contrast is presented by the metallurgical treatment of steel adjacent to a fusion weld, as such steel is subjected to each temperature from room temperature to fusion temperature, and cooled at a rate that is not generally controllable but is predetermined by the nature of the assembly to be welded, the kind of welding used, and the surrounding conditions. This is true regardless of the type of fusion welding: oxyacetylene, electric arc, thermit or flash resistance. Therefore it seemed desirable to investigate the effect of this metallurgical treatment on the characteristics of carbon steels commonly used for welding, by a detailed study of metal subjected to each temperature range; i.e., each heat-affected zone. Oxyacetylene welding was chosen for the investigation because of the experimental facility of accurately segregating and studying each temperature zone. The nature of the zones produced by other types of welding is the sane. The difference is primarily a matter of dimensions of each of the temperature zones involved. The advantages and disadvantages of the extent of the zone are of prime moment, and are discussed after the presentation of the detailed zone study. No mention is made of the fused metal proper, as this has been the subject of much published research and the nature of the solidified metal is fairly well known. FOUR mines at Wabana, on Bell Island in Concep-tion Bay, Newfoundland, produced 1,209,777 tons of ore in 1927, and it is expected that the produc-tion will be larger in 1928. The ore is a stratified oolitic hematite of sedimentary origin. Three workable beds and many thin beds occur in a thickness of 400 ft. of interbedded sandstones and shales. It is not profitable under present conditions to mine extensively in ore beds less than 4 ft. thick. The iron ore beds outcrop on the small island and are inclined northward more steeply, than the slope of the ocean bottom. The mine work-ings follow the bedded ore below the sea bottom, No. 3 Mine extending about 2 miles north of the island. At this point there is a cover of 1500 ft. of rock and 600 ft. of ocean water. It is impracticable to operate drills in the ocean to prove the extent of the submarine orebody in advance, and diamond drilling from the mine workings is the only method of exploration. Bell Island has been settled for a long time and a monument at Cupids, near Brigus at the head of Conception Bay, commemor-ates the tercentenary of a settlement there in 1611 by Captain Guy of England. was one of the chief ports of Newfoundland for deep sea fishing and doubtless many a captain wondered about the red rocks as he sailed past. The famous geologist, J. B. Jukes, records seeing a bright red sandstone 8 ft. thick on the northwest side of Bell Island during a visit in 1842, but he evident ly did not try to land on that rocky coast to get a sample. The iron ore is plainly visible in the high cliffs along the coast of the island, as bright brown layers interbedded with gray and white sandstones and dark shales. The heavy red rock was used by the fisher-men as anchor weights for fish nets and small boats, but its real value, so the story goes, was discovered by a merchant in Saint John,

RECENTLY, it has been demonstrated that a considerable densification and interparticle bonding can be achieved if a pressure is applied to a powder compact while the material of the compact is undergoing either a decomposition reaction' or a polymorphic transformation.' The term "reactive hot pressing" has been coined to identify this process in which a phase change is combined with pressure to achieve interparticle bonding. This process is based on a principle which postulates that there is an enhanced reactivity and mobility of the molecular species at the phase-transformation temperature and this effect is utilized for interparticle bonding in powder compacts. This note summarizes the results obtained in an attempt to utilize this technique to produce ceramic-metal composites. In this case, a decomposition reaction of a compound (which after decomposition yielded an oxide) was used to achieve interparticle bonding in ceramic-metal composites. The reactive hot pressing was carried out in a Phillips induction heating unit, using either a graphite or a high-temperature steel die which functioned as both the susceptor and the hot-pressing component. The die was heated to the desired temperature in a helium atmosphere. All cermets produced by this technique were based on alumina as the ceramic phase. Different metal phases such as iron, copper, and chromium were used to study the effect of varying the metal phase on the properties of the composite. a Mono-hydrate (Boehmite) was mixed with different proportions of metal powders (-325 mesh) in dry condition in a mortar and pestle. THE Institute of Mining Engineers has shown so much interest in the educational problem of profitably combining theory and practice, that it seems especially appropriate to lay before its members the methods and aims of the mining laboratory of which I have charge, and in which one form of combination of hand with head work is now being tried. If anything may be contributed toward the solution of this problem by the discussion which follows, my purpose mill be attained. Whether it was wise or not to establish a mining school so far from the principal mining centres, does not now enter into the question. Given, a mining school already begun, how shall it be made most efficient in developing engineers who are trained to think for themselves as well as versed in the works of others ? This is the question with which we have had to deal. In considering the bearing of this laboratory work upon the students' preparation, it will be convenient to take it up under five different heads: 1. The methods and aims of the laboratory. 2. The advantage to students of having a part, at least, of their practical work in the curriculum of their school. 3. The advantage to be derived by mine; and works. 4. Degree of accuracy which may be attained in working ores on a small scale. 5. Reslts of work in the laboratory. 1. The Methods and Aims of the Laboratory.—During the May meeting of 1873, held in Boston, I had the privilege of reading before you a paper stating the plan; and aims of this laboratory. Since that time me have been constantly following out those plans, and are more than ever convineed that me are working in the right direction. We do not feel that the time we have spent has been in any sense thrown away. Perhaps the aims of the laboratory can be most clearly shown by illustration. Many young engineers have school thinking that they know everything. They go to the works, and expect to teach the superintendent something and the men a good deal, regardless of the fact that it is this spirit that has prejudiced workmen against schoolmen. THE rapid increase in cost of discovering new orebodies by churn drilling in the Tri-State district has led to some attempts to lessen the expense by using geophysical methods. Electrical prospecting was tried three or four years ago, but no successful results were recorded. In 1926, the Federal Mining and Smelting Co. engaged the North American Exploration Co., of Houston, Texas, to make some tests with the torsion, balance. At first, it was thought that the most favorable conditions for discovery of ore deposits with the torsion balance would be in locations where the ore was known to occur at rather shallow depths, FIG. 1.-CROSS-SECTION OF DUENWEG LEASE. therefore the first trial was made at Duenweg, east of Joplin, where some zinc ore had been developed at a depth of 130 ft. The gravity gradients at 61 stations on a tract of about seventeen acres indicated plainly one large zone of maximum gravity and a smaller narrow zone of minimum gravity. Fourteen churn-drill holes, half of which struck .ore, show that all the ore found was located outside the zones of maximum and minimum gravity. In the zone of maximum, gravity the limestone beds were closest to the surface, and the first chert beds encountered were at the greatest depth. The results (shown in Table 1) indicated that the gravity of the limestone was greater than the gravity of the fractured chert together with its orebodies, and probably also greater than the bouldery soil and clay on top of the limestone. A cross-section of the Duenweg lease is shown in Fig. 1.

The centenary of Julia Ward Howe, author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," is of particular interest to the members of the Institute because of the very active part that has been taken in the affairs of the Institute by her son, Dr. H. M. Howe. By an order of the Board of Education, the one hundredth anniversary of Mrs. Howe's birth, May 27, was observed in the public schools of New York City with the singing of the fatuous battle hymn. Boston, the city of her adoption, celebrated her centenary by a service in the Church of the Disciples, where Governor Coolidge made an address, and in which John Andrew Post took a prominent part. General Pershing sent a letter, which was read by the Rev. Abraham Mitrie Rihbany, in which he said: "It is a great privilege to bear witness to the widespread effect of ?The Battle Hymn of the Republic? on the morale of the fighting men. It is unique in its religious fervor and enthusiasm and whenever sung it can have but the same effect which it produced when it was first sung in the Civil War."

The deformation of' impure beryllium crystals by basal glide at room temperature invariably tevminates by basal cleavage after a few percent strain. It is generally accepted that .fracture of this type is caused by the splitting of low) -angle boundaries, or bend planes, by obstacles that restrict the motion of the bed planes in the deforming crystal. The details of such a process have been developed by Stroh, who showed that the high tensile stress norrnal to the basal plane in the region where the bend plane is split results in the propagation of a basal cleavage crack, provided there is no available dejorvrlatzon mode having a shear component normal to the basal plane It has been postulated that puvification of beryllium might lead to increased basal ductility by the vemoval of barviers to bend plane motion and possibly by the activation of nonbasal defor~rlation systems. Large increases in the amount of basal glide that can he sustained prior to fracture have been observed in crystals purified by zone refining. In each case, eventudal fracture was by sharp basal cleavage, suggesting that the split bend plane model still applies to tile fracture of beryllium of rensonably high purity. In the present work, calculations are made to show to what extent basal duetilits can be increased by purification while the split bend plane .fracture process remains applicable. Experimentally observed ductilities are generally somewhat lower than those predicted by calculation because of premature failure due to defects introd~cced during specimen preparation and testing. SEVERAL investigators1-4 have studied the deformation characteristics of beryllium single crystals of commercial purity, and have related the strong anisotropy of plastic deformation in single crystals to the problem of brittleness in polycrystalline beryllium. For most orientations, the principal deformation mode is basal slip, which, at temperatures between 300" and 900°K, begins at a critical resolved shear stress of approximately 1500 g per sq mm and terminates after 3 to 6 pet glide strain by cleavage on the basal plane in the neighborhood of (1120) bend planes that are formed during the deformation. This type of fracture, which is also observed in zinc at low temperatures, has been interpreted by stroh5 to be caused by the splitting of bend planes by obstacles to their motion. In the Stroh model, a (11.20) dislocation wall, or bend plane, moving along the slip direction under the action of the applied stress, encounters obstacles which cause part of the bend plane to be held up, the other part continuing to move. Stress concentrations are built up in the region where the bend plane is split, with a high tensile component normal to the basal plane, resulting in a microcrack at the end of the split wall. Because no deformation mode having a shear component at an angle to the basal plane is available to relieve the stress at the crack tip, the crack can propagate under a sufficiently high applied stress. This report covers the area producing from limes and sands of Pennsylvanian age, roughly embracing the territory between the Red River on the north and the Llano Mountains on the south, and between Fort Worth on the east and Abilene on the west. It includes Archer, Cooke, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, Clay, Baylor and Foard counties in the North Central Texas or Red River Basin area, and Brown, Callahan Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, Erath, Palo Pinto, Stephens, Shackel-ford, Throckmorton, Young and Jack counties in the West Central Texas area. Furthermore, it includes a brief review of development in Jones, Runnels, Haskell and Fisher counties. North Central and West Central Texas during the year 1928 produced an approximate total of 50,948,7461 bbl. or oil. This represents a decrease of approximately 7,720,250 bbl. under 1927 total production. This decrease was due to a slump in production in Brown, Archer, Wichita, Stephens and Cooke counties. Brown County showed the greatest decrease. The 1928 prodction in this county was approximately 4,500,000 bbl. less than the 1927 production. Gross production during 1929 in the North and West Central Texas area can be expected to be lower than in the year 1928. Only one county showed a considerable increase in production. Wilbarger County production increased approximately 3,000,000 bbl. during 1928. Its daily average increased from 9000 bbl. in April to 36,000 bbl. in August. At the close of 1928 it was averaging close to 32,000 bbl. daily. Drilling activity in North and West Central Texas during 1928 showed but a slight increase in completions. The total number of completions during 1928 was 3902, of which 2094 (53 per cent.) were producers, as compared to 3805 completions and 2112 (56 per cent.) producers during 1927. Brown, Young, Wichita, Archer and Wilbarger counties were the leaders in development. The outstanding discoveries for the districts were the Consolidated pool, extensions in the Greyback pool of Wilbarger County, and the Stephens pool, Fisher County.

For many steel parts it is desired to obtain the maximum toughness consistent with the strength required by the mechanical design. It is generally recognized that the greatest toughness at any given strength is found in steels having a tempered martensitic structure.' and is virtually independent of the composition of the steel2 (except for carbon). The choice of the composition of a steel for the parts in question should be based, therefore, on hardenability considerations and on manufacturing facility and economy. In a recent paper3 the concept of hardenability was discussed and a somewhat new approach to the problem was suggested. The hardenability was defined in terms of the cooling conditions (speed of cooling) required to avoid the pearlite and the bainite reactions. Since all the alloying elements do not have the same effects on the two reactions, the bainitic and pearl-itic hardenabilities must be considered separately. In order to design a steel for a given part, it is necessary to design a composition that has both sufficient pearlitic and sufficient bainitic hardenability. However, this requirement does not fix the combination of alloying elements to be used; an infinite number of steels would have the required hardenabilities. Other considerations limit the choice. For example, decreasing the carbon content increases the toughness at a given hardness, and for this reason low-carbon steels are often desired. Limitations or requirements of refining, casting, or forming practices often affect the level of some of the alloying elements. Price considerations enter. Frequently, however, it is very desirable to minimize the tendency toward quench-cracking while maintaining the necessary hardenability. This paper is concerned with suggesting a method for choosing compositions that will have the required hardenability together with minimum tendency toward quench-cracking. Quench Cracking Since only the case in which the entire part will transform to martensite in the particular quench employed is being considered, the analysis of the quench-cracking problem is somewhat simplified. Quench-cracking arises from the temperature gradients existing throughout the piece during cooling. Because of these temperature gradients, the contraction arising from the decreasing temperature and the expansion arising from the austenite-martensite reaction do not occur uniformly over the parts, and stresses are set up that tend to cause cracking. The temperature gradients can be reduced by decreasing the severity of quench. This, however, requires that the hardenability be correspondingly increased by increasing the carbon or alloy content. ONE of the main criteria used to rate the heat-resisting properties of alloys is stress rupture.1 During a stress-rupture test a tensile specimen is held under a constant load at a constant temperature until it fractures. The chief measurement made during this test is the time required for rupture at the specific test stress and temperature. It was found empirically from a series of stress-rupture tests at a constant temperature that when the logarithm of the time for rupture is plotted against the logarithm of stress a straight line is obtained within experimental error.2~3 This method of showing stress-rupture data has been adopted by many investigators and the KACA.4 By interpolation and extrapolation from these plots, values of the stresses required to rupture the specimens (the rupture strengths) in 10, 100, and 1000 hr are obtained for specific temperatures. Alloys are then rated for a particular application on the basis of their rupture strengths at the rupture life that most nearly represents the application. Inasmuch as stress rupture is an important criterion in rating heat-resisting alloys, it would be advantageous to know the quantitative dependence of the time for rupture on stress, temperature, com- position, and structure. In order to obtain this information, an investigation was made at the KACA Cleveland laboratory during the spring of 1945. The theory of rate processes was used because it has been found to apply to certain processes such as chemical reactions, viscous flow, and creep that occur at a definite rate for given conditions. It was thought that stress rupture was such a process. An equation was derived that gives, for a given com- position and structure, the dependence of the time for rupture on stress and temperature. The investigation is part of a general program to provide information that will lead ultimately to the development of better alloys in order that the efficiency and power output of gas turbines used in aircraft propulsion can be increased. THEORY The theory of rate processes will first be discussed as a general theory. It will then be shown that if stress rupture of heat-resisting alloys can be treated as a rate process, certain equations must be satisfied. Later sections will then show that these equations are satisfied. General Theory of Rate Processes The theory of rate processes5 eveloped by Eyring and others has been applied to chemical reactions as well as to other processes such as viscosity of liquids and diffusion. In every case in which rate- process theory can be applied, there is a small subdivision, so that the macroscopic process is the net effect of all the small processes. T. H. Alden (General Electric Research Laboratory)—This paper as well as earlier ones of Dr. Wood represent an important contribution to the experimental description of fatigue fracture. The mechanism of fracture proposed by the authors, however, is not established by this data nor supported by other data existing in the literature. Although taper section metallography provides a rather detailed picture of fatigue crack geometry, photographs so obtained must be interpreted with care. The narrow bands revealed by etching, frequently associated with surface notches, are labeled by the authors "fissures". Measurement shows, taking into account the 20 to 1 taper magnification, that the depth of these structures is at most 2 to 3 times the width. This distinction is important in the conception of a mechanism of crack formation. It is difficult, for example, to imagine a deep, narrow fissure arising from a "ratchet slip" model. A surface notch, on the other hand, may form easily by this mechanism. The notches observed in the present work are the subsurface evidence of the surface slip bands or striations in which fatigue cracks are known to originate.4-6 It is clear that an understanding of the structure of these slip bands is of key importance in understanding the mechanism of fracture. The evidence presented shows that these regions etch preferentially, possibly because they contain a high density of lattice defects, or as the authors state equivalently, because they are "abnormally distorted." However, it is not possible to conclude that the distortion consists of a high density of vacant lattice sites. The fact of a high total shear strain in itself does not assure a predominance of point defects as opposed to other defects, for example, dislocations. Other evidence in the literature which suggests unusual densities of point defects formed by fatigue7-' refers not to the striations or fissures, but to the material between fissures (the "matrix"). If a choice must be made, the preferential etching would seem to be evidence for a high dislocation density, since dislocations are known to encourage chemical attack in copper;g no such effect is known for the case of point defects. A third alternative is that the slip bands are actually cracked, but that near its tip the crack is too narrow to be detected by the authors' metal-lographic technique. In this case the rapid etching can be readily understood in terms of the increased chemical activity of surface atoms. Unless a vacancy mechanism is operative, the motion of dislocations to-and-fro on single slip planes will not lead to crack growth. Point defect or dislocation loop generation are the principal non-reversible effects predicted by this model. In any case, the nonuniform roughening of the surface in a slip band6 requires a flexibility of dislocation motion which is not a part of the to-and-fro fine slip idea. The same is probably true of crack growth by a shear mechanism. Either some dislocations must change their slip planes near the end of the band and return on different planes,'0 or dislocations of opposite sign annihilate." The mechanism by which these processes occur in copper at room temperature or below is that of cross slip. Thus cross slip appears to be essential to fatigue crack growth.6'10"12 The fact that a tensile stress opens the slip bands into broad cracks does not indicate the structure of the bands or the mechanism by which cracks form. The charactersitic concentration of slip into bands during fatigue shows a low resistance to shear strain in these regions. (This fact in itself may be inconsistent with a high concentration of vacancies.) The authors contend also that continuing shear produces an additional mechanical weakening so that the bands fracture easily (are pulled apart) under the influence of the superimposed tensile stress. It is equally possible that the only weakness is a weakness in shear, that the crack propagates by a shear mechanism, and that subsequently the tensile stress pulls the crack apart. Even the direct observation of bands opened by a tensile stress would not be conclusive since, as argued above, they may be fine cracks. The same argument applies to internal cracks, their existence in the presence of a tensile stress not indicating the mechanism of formation. Internal cracks originating in regions of heavy shear have also been seen following tensile deformation of OFHC copper,13 so that this mode of fracture is not unique to combined tensile and fatigue straining. The authors point out in their companion report14 that 90 pct of the cracks formed during pure tor-sional strain were within 8 deg of the normal to the specimen axis. If the tensile stress were an important factor in crack propagation, it is surprising that the cracks cluster about the plane in which the normal stress vanishes. Similarly, a study of zinc single crystals showed that for various orientations the life correlated well with the resolved shear stress on the basal plane,'= and was not dependent on the normal stress across this plane. Safety records in the mineral industry for 1954 will do well to hold their own as compared with 1953, because of the poorer rate in the coalmining branches, even without the recent mine explosion at the No. 9 mine of the Jamison Coal & Coke Co., Farmington, W. Va., that killed 16 persons. .The cause of that disaster has not yet been ascertained. The metal-mining branch appears to have improved its record over the last year, however. Health Diesel equipment continues to be favored in non-coal mines. Equipment includes locomotives, trucks, tractors, and muckers.
