Before getting into a discussion of the subject of my paper, I want first to make it clear to everyone that I am speaking as an individual; and that any expressions of opinion that are contained herein, or may be expressed in any oral discussion that may follow its presentation, are entirely my own, and must not be construed to be the official opinion of the American Petroleum Institute. Demand fob Motor Fuel, 1936 During the year just closed the domestic demand for gasoline exceeded 481 million barrels. This compares with 434,810,000 bbl. consumed during 1935 and indicates an increase of 10.46 per cent. Export shipments amounted to 27,831,000 bbl. while in 1935 they totaled 30,613,000 bbl. Total demand, therefore, was 509,422,000 bbl., or 9.16 per cent above the 465,423,000 bbl. of 1935. Following are the figures for several years: Already we are supplying gasoline domestically and as foreign shipments at a rate almost 25 per cent greater than our low level of 1933. Before giving figures for 1937, I should like to spend a moment or two in discussion of gasoline inventories, from the point of view of minimum working stocks and other requirements and of probable actual levels. GENERAL GEOLOGIC DESCRIPTION The mineral deposit of this case study can be described as a "typical" porphyry copper deposit of the southwestern USA and northern Mexico mineral province. The copper mineralization is related to Laramide age intrusives of intermediate composition which have been intruded into older, mostly crystalline, host rocks. Post Laramide deformation and faulting have subjected the deposit to erosion, leaching, and enrichment processes, which have created a secondarily enriched chalcocite zone. Later basin and range faulting down dropped the ore zone, resulting in deep burial beneath late Tertiary conglomerates and gravels, thus preserving the deposit from further erosion and oxidation. Lower grade chalcopyrite mineralization constitutes the primary zone underlying the enriched blanket. MANAGEMENT OF SAMPLE DATA Sample data were obtained from exploration diamond drill holes that were collared vertically and drilled with surface rigs. Most of the holes were surveyed downhole and found to deviate significantly from the vertical. The data were keypunched from original drill hole logs to formats as described in Chapter 6. Zone Zone Sample Sample Coordinates Sample Assays Leach InterLength Northing Fasting Elev Total Cu Oxide Cu (etc) face] MINERAL BOUNDARY PROBLEM AND TREATMENT According to the geologic description, at least three mineral zones are present within the ore limits, as well as fault boundaries and a buried topographic surface, each of which have to be considered. The interfaces of the various mineralogical and geological boundaries were identified as accurately as possible in each drill hole by the project geologist, the location of the interface was surveyed in the computer program in association with the nearest sample intercept to the interface (note last field of line 3). Thus, the boundary is represented as a point in 3D space at each intersecting drill hole. The linear interpolation (LINTERP) program then searched the last field of the surveyed record to find the top of each mineral zone, or geologic boundary, and read the coordinates associated with that sample point. The program then used the coordinates to compute an interpolated surface between all existing data points as described in Chapter 11. A contour map was plotted for each of the computed surfaces and reviewed by the project geologist. Where the surfaces were poorly defined due to lack of real drill hole information, the geologist, at times, inserted a "pseudo" drill hole intercept according to his best judgment and feeling for the configuration of the surface, and such points were entered into the data stream for LINTERP. The tests here described were rrlade to obtain information regarding costs, efficiency, etc. of baking cores in an oil-fired oven and two electric ovens, which were installed, early in 1920, in the core room of The Ohio Brass Co. and were used almost continuously during the rest of that year. Operating costs were rather high so a complete test was undertaken early in 1921. The ovens will be referred to as Nos. 1, 2, and 3. Nos. 1 and 2 are electric ovens of different makes while No. 3 is an oil-fired oven made by the firm that made No. 2. The three arc. equipped with similar ventilating devices. They have full-height doors at front and rear. The cores are placed on iron racks, which arc lifted by Cowan trucks and rolled into the ovens through the front doors. When baked, they are removed through the rear doors. Fig. 1 shows the general plan of the elecric ovens while Fig. 2 shows the plan of the oil-fired oven. Oven No. 1 is 91 in. (231 em.) wide, 83 in. (210 em.) high. and 79 in. (200 cm.) deep, inside measurements. The walls are constructed ill panels about 18 in. (46 cm.) wide and 43/16 in. (10.6 em.) thick, packed with blocks of insulating material and covered with sheet iron. Thc concrete floor oil which the owns set is 13 in. (33 cm.) thick. 4 recess about 5 in. (13 cm.) deep was cut in the floor to provide room for the heating units. Channels and plates supported on I beams serve as supports for the trucks and racks. The ventilating system consists of a Sirroco No. 11/2 fan, connected so as to draw air from the top of the oven or from the room, through damper C, and to deliver it either to the bottom of the oven or to the floor; the delivery is controlled by the vane A. The origin of the watery vapors of vulcanism has always been an object of interest and speculation to the seismologist, and as theories of the genetic origin of ore-deposits have of late years been pretty well narrowed down to the expiring forces of plutonic action, the same question has attracted mining engineers and geologists, as is well shown by the discussions of the subject in our Transactions. The important part taken by volcanic emanations in the origin of pegmatites and quartz-veins, described in my paper, Origin of Pegmatite,' and their latent power to concentrate into useful deposits such scattered gold as occurs in the Hartsel granite, make a discussion of their derivation but a natural third and final step. It is coilceded that enormous amounts of vapor accompany vulcanism, though perhaps we are apt to forget that steam has 1,700 times the volume of water, besides which the column seen over Vesuvius and other volcanoes is greatly mixed with air; the immensity of such volumes compared with solids and liquids is shown by the experiment of Gautier, who, by heating dessicated granite to 100' C., evolved from it gases 20 times, and steam 90 times, its own volume. Dana appraised the average amount of water left in ordinary rocks as 2.5 per cent. T. M. Read estimated that the Mississippi river carries to the sea annually 150,000,000 tons of rock material. If these Mississippi sediments, as deposited, contained 20 per cent. of water, it would be 600,000,000 cu. ft., or 4,500,000,000 American gallons, annually. Allowing the vapor suspended over a volcanic cone to be mixed with 80 per cent. of air, this amount of water converted into steam would replenish anew, every 9 min., a column 15,000 ft. high, 2,000 ft. in diameter at the base, and • 10,000 ft. at the top. Read's estimate is only half of the amount given in a more recent and probably correct one.2

D. W. Fuerstenau (Associate Professor of Metallurgy, Dept. of Mineral Technology, University of California, Berkeley, Calif.) and D. A. Sullivan, Jr. (with the University of California) — Messrs. Bergstrom, Sollenberger and Mitchell have shown in two excellent papers that the energy per unit mass required for the breaking of spheres is inversely proportional to the size modulus of the fragments of the broken spheres. They found that the fragments of spheres broken within a steel enclosure were finer than those produced by breaking spheres encased in gelatin. This results from utilization of part of the strain energy at fracture for secondary breakage. For spheres not encased in gelatin, these authors found that after fracture the fragments of the spheres possess kinetic energy amounting to 45% of the strain energy needed for initial fracture. Breakage of a sphere in gelatin results in waste of this kinetic energy, whereas breakage inside the steel container makes use of this kinetic energy for further size

The effects of the solute elements lead and bismuth on grain growth in zone -refined tin have been investigated. At low temperatures, viz. below 160°C. or at high concentrations, viz. greater than 0.03 at. pct, the temperature dependence of grain growth was found to be constant. A correlation was found to exist between the rates of grain growth in the presence of solute impurities and the factor [C Ir - 1]2 , where C is the solute concentration, r is the radius of solvent atom, and r' is radius of solute atom. It is shown that the Liicke and Detert theory does not give a satisfactory explanation of the results obtained. INVESTIGATIONS of grain growth in zone-refined lead and tin and some effects of solute elements on grain growth in these metals have been reported by Bolling and winegardly2 and Holmes and winegard? The present investigation is an extension of the previous work, and was undertaken to provide additional results which might make it possible to discover the mechanism whereby the rate of grain growth is affected by the presence of foreign solute atoms. The experimental procedure was exactly the same as that described previously.3'4 Figs. 1 and 2 show the results obtained with lead and bismuth additions over the same temperature range, viz. 167" to 220°C, as that used for the investigation of grain growth in zone-refined tin.3 Fig. 3 shows the results obtained for zone-refined tin and for this tin with lead solute additions over an extended temperature range. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS As mentioned previously,3 the character of grain growth in the particular zone-refined tin used in these experiments appears to change as the temperature of annealing falls below about 160°C. The grain growth became somewhat irregular and was characterized by a jaggedness of many of the grain boundaries. The reason for this change is not known, but may be due either to residual impurity effects or possibly an oxide precipitation. It was obvious that normal grain growth only occurred in the zone-refined tin through the high-temperature range 167" to 220°C, and so the effects of solute atoms on grai11 growth over the two temperature ranges will be discussed separately. a) Effect of Impurity on Grain Growth in the Temperature :Range Above 167°C. It is apparent from Figs. 1 and 2 that, for low concentrations of solute, the rates of grain growth tend towards a common value as the melting temperature of tin is approached. As the concentration of lead is increased, the rate of grain growth close to the melting temperature is also reduced, and at high concentrations the temperature dependence of the rate of grain growth appears approximately constant. It should be noteil that the effect of bismuth is greater than that of the same concentration of lead, but both these solutes have a smaller effect on the rate of grain growth than silver, as seen from an earlier investigation of Holmes and Winegard. From time to time, one of the authors has had occasion to investigate the graphitizing reaction and has published the results mainly as discussion' of the work of other investigators. In view, therefore, of the diversity of both observations and interpretation, it seemed well to attempt, a revision of the entire subject in the Research Laboratory of the National Malleable Castings Co. The work consisted of a careful study of a single, impure, iron-carbon alloy. The material, which may be considered typical low-carbon white cast iron of the malleable industry, was an air-furnace iron of the following composit,ion: carbon 2.30 per cent., silicon 1.20 per cent., manganese 0.29 per cent., phosphorus 0.156 per cent., sulfur 0.048 per cent. The freezing range extended from 1213' to 1132' C., the latter figure agreeing with Gontermann's data.2 We have attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of this alloy, in the stable condition as related to the mctastable diagr,aui,- from a temperature somewhat below the euteetic freezing point to a temperature l>clow Arl and for a graphitic-carbon content from practically notliing to the original total rarbon of the specimen (see Fig. 6). The profeseional career of Thomas Septimus Austin, who died at El Paso, Tex., Aug. 23, 1906, was contemporaneous with the growth of the silver-lead smelting-industry of the Far West, to which his talents and zeal contributed in no small degree. Born at Stratford, Conn., Dec. 7, 1853, he was the seventh son in a family of thirteen. His parents were well-to-do; and he received a thorough preliminary training at the Hopkins Grammar School, New Haven, Colin., passing thence to the Columbia School of Mines, in New York, where he was graduated in 1876. His first professional work was that of analytical chemist with a Cuban sugar company. In this position he spent a year, and, whatever else of benefit he may have acquired during that year in Cuba, he gained a facility of speech in the Spanish language which was of inestimable value in his subsequent work in Mexico and the southwestern United States. In 1877, he went to the Rocky Mountains, and, under the firm name of Murphy & Austin, opened an assay-ofice in Lead-ville, Colo., which was just then coming into public notice as a rich silver-lead camp. The next year, however, he entered the service of the Germania Smelting & Refining Co. at Salt Lake City, Utah, where he remained until 1882, first as assayer and chemist, and later as Assistant Superintendent. The Germa-nia bears the honorable distinction of being one of the first of the large " custom" lead-smelters erected in the West. Its founders may be called the pioneers of the modern lead-smeltr ing practice, and the Germania served, to a large extent, as a model for the many plants that sprang into existence during the next few years in Utah, southern Idaho, Colorado and other lead-producing districts. The purposes of this study are (a) to determine the accuracy of a previously proposed method for calclrlating average reservoir pressure and (b) to find a method for estimating the shape of the drainage area of each well in a bounded reservoir. Both numerical and experimental methods are used to determine the pressure distribution and the location of drainage bounrlaries in idealized reservoirs at steady state. A number of photographs are included which show flowlines and drainage areas in reservoir models of various shapes. Results from these studies are then compared with those from the previously proposed method for calculating average reservoir pressure.' It is concluded that the previously proposed method is sufficiently accurate for most reservoir engineering purposes. In addition, some simple methods are given for estimation of .shapes of drainage boundaries. INTRODUCTION A method for the determination of the average Pressure in a bounded reservoir was previously developed by Matthews, Brons, and Hazebroek,1 and presented at the Petroleum Branch Fall Meeting in 1953.† In aP- plying this method, the reservoir was first divided into drainage volumes; second, the average pressure in each drainage volume was calculated; and third, these drainage volume pressures were averaged volumetrically to give the average pressure in the reservoir. It was shown that each well's individual drainage volume, at steady state, is proportional to the well's production rate; however. the question of how to estimate accurately the shape of these drainage volumes could not be answered. Furthermore, in calculating the average pressure for each drainage area, the actual drainage areas, which are in general quite asymmetric in shape, are replaced with one of the symmetric prototypes given in T.P. 3876. A question may then be raised as to how accurately the symmetrical figures depict the pressure behavior of the actual unsymmetrical drainage areas. The study reported on in the present paper was made in an attempt to shed light on the above questions. METHODS It was shown in T.P. 3876 that after a period of steady rate of withdrawal the rate of pressure decline becomes constant at every point in a bounded reservoir containing a single-phase fluid whose compressibility is small and constant and whose viscosity is con-

Inasmuch as] the mining of phosphate rock and its transportation has so general a bearing on the great industries of this continent, entering as well into the problem of our trade with foreign countries, it may be useful to place on record the following list of localities from which certain products of a like nature are received by us in a business way, or in which we are interested more or less either by ownership or by competition. As a ready means of comparison, the percentages of the mine products and the deteriorating constituents are given : Coprolite (Cambridge).—This material is obtained from the Upper Greensand formation in Cambridgeshire. The phosphate runs from 50 to 60 per cent., and averages 64 per cent. It contains much carbonate of calcium, but little iron, in the ferric condition. The superphosphates manufactured from the material are permanent and little liable to a revert." They contain from 28 to 35 per cent. of soluble phosphate. Coprolite (Buckingham).—From the same formation as the Cambridge variety, and very similar in composition.. It averages 60 per cent. phosphate. Coprolite (Suffolk).—These coprolites are not so valuable for the manufacture of superphosphate as the two previous varieties, as the iron they contain is in the ferric state, and liable to "revert" the soluble phosphate. The phosphate varies from 48 to 60 per cent., but averages 54 per cent. They are of Tertiary formation. Coprolite (Potton or Bedford).—The average amount of phosphate in these coprolites is about 50 per cent. In some cases they may, however, run up to 60 per cent., and in others may not exceed 45 per cent. They belong to the Lower Greensand formation. The ferric iron frequently is as high as 4 per cent., and the alumina as much. Russian phosphate comes from the chalk, and occurs in carious rounded masses. It contains from 28 to 35 per cent. of phosphate, but may run up to 69 or 70 per cent. Curacoa phosphate is also of very high class quality, giving 80

INTRODUCTION Published laboratory procedures used by the major crusher manufacturers for estimating crusher size are based upon techniques developed in the mid 1940's. Specifically, the two largest U.S. crusher manufacturers are using the Bond impact procedure. Although the procedure is still in use, there is little confidence in the results. Unless the laboratory results fall within a preconceived range, personal experience is used for selecting the number of crushers and connected horsepower (Coleman, 1978). There have been numerous theoretical studies of the communition of particles. However, no procedure has been widely acclaimed for predicting crusher power requirements. Experimental studies have included breakage by slow compression, slow speed impact and high speed impact. Theoretical results have increased our knowledge of the comminution process, but the procedures have not been capable of analyzing the complex mechanism of industrial crushing machines. The purpose of this chapter is to review the empirical crushing procedures that have been used, including advantages and disadvantages. A new procedure which has been in development at Allis-Chalmers Corp. from 1977 to 1982 is detailed. Actual results of the new procedure on a concentrator feasibility study are included. EXPERIMENTAL GOALS The goals of a laboratory crushability procedure are accurate predictions of: (1) Rock crushability, measured as energy per unit mass. (2) Crusher product size analysis. A procedure capable of predicting these parameters should be inexpensive and require a minimum amount of sample. CRUSHABILITY TESTS Bond Impact Procedure F. C. Bond (1946) detailed the development of the pendulum impact device that is still used by the leading crusher manufacturers (Bond; Rexnord, 1976). With the expansion of open pit operations, belt conveyors are going to be used in the 13 608 to 18 144 t/h (15,000 to 20,000 stph) capacity range, which calls for a review of some of the horsepower calculation methods. This paper presents methods (based on German research data, field tests and theoretical considerations) for the evaluation of the Ky factor in the CEMA formula for belt conveyors of large carrying capacity, which fall beyond the limits of the data given in tables in the CEMA book. (The CEMA limits are 407 N\\m (300 lb ft) and Tave = 7.3 Mg (16,000 lb). At these large loads, the impression resistance of the belting on the idlers plays a major role, which in turn influences the magnitude of the drive horse power required. An example will illustrate the order of magnitude difference of the horsepower values obtained by using a conventional calculation method and the suggested method, as well as the beneficcia1 influence of the 4-roll idler in comparison to the standard 3-roll unit for a large caving capacity belt conveyor. This paper concerns itself with the analysis of the resistance to motion of belt conveyors, emphasizing the evaluation of the frictional resistance to motion due to load and belt pressure on the idlers and the flexing resistance of the belt and material when passing over the idlers. In the case of long and heavily loaded belt conveyors, the aforementioned resistances reach extremely high values calling for close analysis of the phenomena, presently not calculable with normally used formulas. This paper establishes correlation between experimental and empirical data presenting practical formulas a tool for the designer of high-capacity belt conveyors. The application of the formula is illustrated in an example in the Appendix.

A study of specimens shows that the key to both oxidation and enrichment at Duck-town is the behavior of pyrrhotite, which is in part dissolved and in part replaced by marcasite. Enrichment takes place chiefly at the expense of marcasite. THE material that forms the basis of this paper was collected in the spring of 1922, during a ten-day visit to Ducktown by the writer in the company of Prof. L. C. Graton. The time available for the work was far too short to allow anything like a thorough study of the deposits, and structural and stratigraphic questions, though they have an important bearing on the origin of the primary ores, were necessarily left untouched. Attention was focussed on the zone of oxidation and enrichment; and by devoting most of our time to the upper levels, open pits, and old workings, and examining the deeper levels only thoroughly enough to obtain a fair idea of the nature of the primary sulfide ore, we were able to make a reasonably complete survey of the various orebodies. With this field work for a background, the writer later made a study, in the Harvard laboratories, of the specimens obtained during the visit. As some of the facts brought to light by this study appear to be new, it seems worth while to set forth the outstanding features and a proposed explanation of them. Much of the Ducktown material that is obviously of greatest significance, as regards oxidation and enrichment, is soft and crumbly. Notwithstanding the desirability of gaining from such material all possible information as to its mineral composition and textural relationships, but little has heretofore been learned regarding it; but, by suitable preparation of this material in connection with the present study, it has been possible to examine it under the microscope without any disturbance of its texture and about as satisfactorily as if it were hard, fresh ore. The information thus gained has contributed measurably to the results set forth in this paper.

The primary object of this study was to determine the effect of ferrite and its orientation upon the mechanical properties of a precipitation -hardening stainless steel with particular attention to the short-transverse properties. The investigation consisted of Jour major parts : the preliminary investigation of billet properties, the effect of forging reduction and ferrite content upon mechanical properties, the effect of notch orientation upon impact strength, and the relationship of heat composition to ferrite content. Low ductility and impact strength in the short transverse direction were found to he associated with the orientation and shape of- the ferrite plates. It was also determined that impact strength varied with notch orientation. The test values obtained with the notch perpendicular to the plane of the ferrite plate were lower than those obtained in the notch-parallel condition. The over-all investigation showed that high ferrite contents in general had a deleterious effect upon mechanical properties and that the ferrite content could he minimized by exercising rigorous control of the heat composition. A careful balance of elements, nitrogen in particular, must he maintained in order to reduce the formation of ferrite. THE precipitation-hardening stainless steels were developed to fulfill a need for high-strength corrosion-resistant alloys. In the annealed condition they are soft and ductile and possess many of the desirable characteristics of the austenitic stainless steels. In the hardened condition, the alloys exhibit the high strength and hardness of the martensitic stainless steels. The alloy under consideration in this investigation has a nominal composition as follows: C Mn Si Cr Ni Mo N 0.13 0.95 0.25 15.50 4.30 2.75 0.10 The hardening mechanism is identical to that of other hardenable steels in that it depends upon the transformation of austenite to martensite. This alloy because of its annealed structure and its ability to be hardened combines the desirable forming and corrosion properties of the austenitic grades with the high hardness and strength levels attainable with the hardenable grades. The reason for this apparent duplicity of proper- ties can be explained by considering a basic metallurgical difference between the hardenable stainless steels and those of the austenitic group. Both types are austenitic at 1800°F but, while the martensitic grades transform to martensite upon rapid cooling to room temperature, the austenitic grades remain austenitic even when cooled to temperatures below room temperature. The major difference then is in the degree of austenite stability. This stability can quantitatively be described by the Ms temperature. The Ms is defined as that temperature at which austenite begins to transform to martensite. The austenitic grades for example may be cooled to -300°F without producing significant quantities of martensite. The hardenable stainless steels on the other hand have an Ms temperature in the vicinity of 400" to 700°F. In cooling to room temperature, these alloys traverse the entire Ms-Mf range and show almost complete transformation to martensite. The semiaustenitic stainless steel, however, occupies an intermediate position with respect to its austenite stability. The analysis is so balanced that the Ills temperature lies at or slightly above room temperature. The resulting alloy retains much of its austenite at room temperature and yet responds to hardening heat treatments. Achieving this delicate balance of elements is therefore of great importance. Slight imbalances of the equivalent Cr-Ni ratios frequently result in the presence of 6 ferrite. It is the effects of this ferrit with which we are concerned, more specifically the effect of the quantity and ferrite orientation upon mechanical properties, particularly ductility. PROCEDURE A) Preliminary Investigation of Billet and Forging Properties. In order to determine the effect of ferrite on billet properties, billet stock from three heats with various ferrite contents was utilized. Tensile specimens were obtained in the transverse and longitudinal directions from this material and heat-treated as shown in Tables I and 11. Forgings were made from these same heats, the purpose being to determine what effect, if any, the ferrite might have upon the mechanical properties. These forgings were made in such a manner as to elongate the ferrite in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The method of forging was as follows. A section was cut from a 6-in.-sq billet of Heat A and flat-forged to 1-1/2 in. thick. Working was done from one direction only with no edging passes as shown

Reduction of silicon from blast-furnace-type slags by carbon-saturated iron is a very slow reaction even under conditions of rapid stirring. Equilibrium under atmospheric pressure of carbon monoxide was approached from both sides, and the silica-silicon relation was established at temperatures of 1425º to 1700°C for slags containing up to 20 pct Al2O3. Silicon carbide is formed by reaction of graphite with high silica slags and the conditions for its formation were determined. Activities of SiO2 and of CaO in their binary solutions at 1600°C were determined. The effects on the activity of SiO2 were established for additions of 10 to 20 pct AI2O3 and of 10 pct MgO. STUDIES of chemical reactions between blast-*>-5 furnace slags and metal have been focussed on the transfer of sulphur from metal to slag. The important role which silica reduction plays in this process' has led to a study of the transfer of silicon from slag to metal and the equilibrium represented by the equation SiO2 (in slag) + 2C (graphite) = Si + 2CO (g). [I.] The authors2 have published an account of the experimental method employed in attacking this problem and of three series of experimental results at 1600°C. This paper contains data on some additional compositions and extends the observations to cover the temperature range 1425° to 1700°C. The data are used to determine the activity of silica in the slags. As in the earlier experiments, the atmosphere was carbon monoxide which flowed through the furnace at 150 ml per min. In certain heats designated in the tables and figures, the gas was bubbled through the melt using a graphite tube. The latter increased in porosity during a run and in some cases bubbling ceased as indicated by cessation of surging. Some results were discarded for this reason. Experimental Results The new data are shown in Tables I through V and both old and new data are plotted in Figs. 1

It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method used to determine the corundum contents of samples of hard crystalline gneiss containing both corundum and red garnet. A chemical analysis of the rock for alumina would not fix the amount of corundum became at least three other constituent minerals of the rock, mica, feldspar, and garnet, contain alumina combined with silica. Following are the principal minerals found in the samples, together with their specific gravity and hardness as given by Dana: The corundum occurred in crystals of a gray or bluish gray color, in minute grains and coarser up to 0.5 in., and no massive or block corundum was observed. The larger crystals were commonly quite slender, well defined, and the normal hexagonal form clearly developed. They lay with the structural planes of the gneiss, and sometimes appeared prominently in relief on weathered surfaces. In some cases these crystals had suffered partial or total alteration to mica, margarite, or other soft minerals, a condition illustrated by sample D, which appeared to be studded abundantly with corundum on the flat faces. Garnet, a striking feature of nearly all the samples, was present in small rounded crystals of a pink to red color. The samples were first broken to pass a No. 4 mesh screen. This was done with a hammer on an iron plate, particular care being taken to avoid the breaking of the crystals finer than need be to pass the screen. A portion of the sample weighing 500 g. was then taken and, with a little water added, was scoured round and round in an iron bucket with a wooden block, until the coarse crystals of corundum were cleaned of adhering pieces of mica.
