The recent activity of numerous foreign mining companies in the once flourishing tin fields in Cornwall, England has resulted in renewed interest in the evaluation of hypothermal tin deposits. These deposits are mainly narrow tabular bodies and are usually steeply dipping. They exhibit thermal zoning the mineralization changing from lead/zinc through copper to tin with depth. The tin zone virtually never exceeds 1,000' in depth and the ore shoots within this zone tend to be erratic and localized. The grade which is presently considered to be economic is about 0.7% Sn. , this means a concentration of about l% cassiterite (the only economic mineral) which, being twice as heavy as the gange, represents only. 5% of the lode volumetrically. Within the lode, only one third may reach this economic grade and values within the shoots can range from 100% cassiterite to zero over a few inches. The enormity of the problem of evaluating such a deposit has not been fully appreciated by the companies involved whose experience has, for the main part, been in larger and more predictable ore bodies. This paper attempts to put these problems into perspective and out- lines the useful applicatations of statistical and computer techniques. It also stresses the need for enlightened interpretation of data by men familiar with the problem and that even in this day and age, educated, intuitive deduction should not yet be relegated to the limbo of alchemy and witchcraft.

When the opportunity to revisit the region was offered in 1929, as a result of a cooperative agreement between the State Mining Board of Oregon and the United States Geological Survey, it seemed advisable to pay particular attention to this feature of the lodes, in the hope that if the idea of zonal relations was confirmed it might serve as a guide in exploitation.

ALTHOUGH the question of the "waste of anthracite coal mining" has been so frequently discussed, and a committee was appointed at the first meeting of this Society to consider and report upon the subject, still but little progress seems to have been made in arriving at a conclusion as to how it can be reduced. That committee made a preliminary report at the August meeting, 1871, in which it divided the question into three parts, namely Waste in mining, in preparing for market, and in transportation. I shall not here refer to the first item, as so much depends upon the peculiar features of each separate mine, and the skill of those in charge; but in reference to the second, that of preparing the coal for market in breaker and screens, I wish to make some remarks. There is no use considering the question, whether the coal should be broken up to suit the fancy of consumers; all miners are satisfied that it should not be, but the consumers decide that they want it that way, and the miner must submit, and simply utter his maledictions upon the head of the man who first suggested a breaker or screen, if that is any consolation to him. What is called waste in this process of preparation, is the dust and fine coal, which results from the breaking and screening, and, as we all know, this is a very important percentage of what passes from the slope to the top of the breaker. Now, if this dust and fine coal can be utilized-the slate which is' picked out is not to be taken into consideration as waste-then we get rid of this item entirely. The relative interfacial energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries in silver of greater than 99.999 pct purity were measured as a function of orientation difference 0 between 9° and 36° about <001>. The results are in good agreement with the dislocation model of the grain boundary. The energy vs H curve may be represented by the Shockley and Read equation in the form Eoe (0.55—In 8). READ&apos; has indicated that an ideal experimental method of testing the predictions of the dislocation theory of the grain boundary would be to measure the interfacial energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries between face-centered-cubic grains that have a common <001> axis, as a function of orientation difference 0. The misfit H should be defined by a rotation of each grain through an angle of H/2 away from the boundary. Such boundaries might be expected, from geometrical considerations, to be made up of a series of edge dislocations, at least for small values of 0. Energy vs H relationships for tin&apos; and lead:&apos; were previously obtained for an asymmetrical tilt boundary separating two grains in which generally only one grain was rotated about a <001> specimen axis through an angle of H away from the boundary, the other grain remaining fixed. It is possible, however, that the boundary atoms in tin and lead may have attained a symmetrical position, in relation to the orientations of the grains on either side of the boundary, during equilibrium annealing. The two sets of measurements on silicon ferrite&apos; were somewhat better suited for comparison with theory, since the boundaries were symmetrical tilt boundaries in which the axis of relative rotation was <110> in the first series and <l00> in the second; but this alloy has a body-centered-cubic structure. Although the grain boundaries in silver" were symmetrically tilted, the axis of relative rotation was not a simple crystallographic direction, and it varied from boundary to boundary. Although the above measurements were in good agreement with the Shockley and Read equation,"&apos;: it appeared desirable to carry out experiments under the ideal conditions specified by Read.&apos; Consequently, the relative energies of symmetrical tilt boundaries in silver between grains that have a common <001> axis were measured. The technique of equilibrating grain boundaries in oriented tricrystals was used rather than the less satisfactory thermal groove method previously employed for silver bicrystals." Experimental Details and Observations The solidification and seeding techniques, described previouslyh for growing tricrystals of controlled orientations, were used to prepare tricrystal specimens from silver of greater than 99.999 pct purity. The silver was obtained from American Platinum Works, Newark, N. J., in the form of poly crystalline rods 10 cm long and 7 mm in diam. These rods were then cold worked by rolling or drawing them into suitably shaped blanks. Single crystal seeds and tricrystals were grown in a high purity graphite boat by means of a movable furnace with globar heating elements. The graphite boat was enclosed in a Vycor tube, which was first evacuated to about l00/u Hg and then filled with a static argon atmosphere. The maximum temperature outside the Vycor tube was 1250°C. A typical tricrystal specimen of silver is shown in Fig. 1. Grains B and C were grown from seed crystals with a <001> specimen axis or longitudinal direction parallel to the direction of growth and with another <001> direction perpendicular to the surface. Each of the two seed crystals was rotated 18" about the <001> specimen axis but in opposite directions away from the boundary. A symmetrical tilt boundary, therefore, separated grains B and C with an orientation difference 8 of 36" about <001>. Grain A in Fig. 1 was grown from the middle seed with a <110> direction parallel to the specimen axis and with a <001> direction inclined at 45&apos; to the surface of the specimen. An investigation has been made of nitrogen absorption by the lattice defects in a low-carbon steel afte~ Plastic deformation. Specimens in which defects were distributed by various combinations of cold rolling and vacuum heat treatment were equilibrated with controlled ammonia + hydrogen mixtures at 300° to 450°C to study the relation between the solubility and the thermodynamic activity of nitrogen. The results are interpreted in terms of nitrogen being absorbed upon two different types of defect sites, called A sites and B sites. The concentrations of these sites are calculated for specimens with various histories of straining and annealing; and the thermodynamic relations descrihing the equilibrium distribution of nitrogen among the A, B, and ordinary interstitial sites in ferrite are evaluated as follows: THE generalization that the solute atoms in a solid solution interact with imperfections in the solvent lattice is now universally recognized and the subject of an extensive literature. All types of imperfections—point, line, or surface—exhibit these interactions, but the relative importance of each type depends upon its concentration, the strength of its interaction with the particular solute atom, and whether the interaction is attractive or repulsive. The strength and sign of the interaction vary with the vectorial displacement of the solute atom from the imperfection in the crystal. The concentration of lattice defects increases during plastic deformation and the effect of the imperfections upon the solute atoms is usually perceived only after cold work or irradiation. Two experimental methods have previously been used to observe the effects of interaction between nitrogen atoms and lattice imperfections in a iron. Internal friction, which was first used for this purpose by Dijkstra,1 has been applied more often than the electrical-resistivity method of Cottrell and Churchman.2 The method of the present investigation has not been used before.* Uniform specimens of steel with a metastable defect structure are produced by cold rolling and subsequent heat treatment below the recrystallization temperature. Variations in the defect structure are obtained by varying the amount of strain and the heat-treatment conditions. The specimens are then saturated with nitrogen at moderately elevated temperatures in ammonia + hydrogen mixtures having various thermodynamic activities of nitrogen below saturation with Fe4N. From the nitrogen contents of analyzed samples, the metastable equilibria of interactions between the defects and nitrogen can be established and the concentration of sites for nitrogen atoms in the lattice defects calculated. A steel was used in the present experiments instead of purified iron or iron alloys because the amount of nitrogen absorbed at defects is larger in the steel over a much wider range of experimental conditions and could therefore be measured more accurately. The effect of alloy composition is discussed in Part II of this paper; it is sufficient to say here that impurities and phase heterogeneity in ferritic alloys favor the generation and/or retention of larger defect concentrations during plastic deformation and annealing at 300° to 500°C. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental specimens were prepared from stock of a low-carbon steel, which will be called "X steel" here, with the composition: C, 0.12 pct; Mn, 0.43 pct; P, 0.010 pct; S, 0.034 pct; Si, 0.007 pct; As, 0.086 pct; Cu, 0.022 pct; Ni, 0.009 pct; Cr, 0.003 pct. The stock was all from a single ingot made by the basic open-hearth process, which was hot-rolled to strip 0.080 in. thick.. This hot-rolled strip, given the code designation "XH", was the starting material for preparing a series of cold-rolled sheets. The latter are designated "XC27",

Highly variable milling procedures within a geologically complex porphyry copper deposit owned by Kennecott Corp. in Nevada made it necessary to estimate copper recovery and concentrate grade in areas where actual test data was lacking. Estimation was made by first determining the relationships between desired metallurgical properties and the ore&apos;s petrology-copper mineral type, rock type, and copper grade. This relationship was then combined with previously estimated rock type, mineral type, and copper grade data in the mineral block model to predict milling properties.

The Flat Gap mine, are important zinc deposit of the Appalachian type, is located in the Copper Ridge Belt in the Valley of Tennessee approximately 30 miles northeast of the Mascot-Jefferson City zinc district (Fig. 1). The ore is found in large stratigraphically linked deposits in solution and collapse breccias of the Kingsport, Longview and, to a minor extent, Mascot formations of Lower Ordovician age. The principal ore mineral is sphalerite and the principal gangue minerals are dolonmite and accessory pyrite. There is local minor galena and very rare barite and fluorite.

The development of huge production facilities and of new or improved processes for manufacturing magnesium from its raw sources has been an outstanding achievement of this war. Furthermore, at least one new method has reached a stage of pilot production that offers promise. Its potentialities seem to indicate that a reduction in cost and simplification or elimination of problems incident to the use of at least one of the present processes are quite within the realm of possibility. Although magnesium of very high purity (99.9 per cent and higher) is obtained, and the rate of recovery reasonable (60 to 70 per cent). the ferrosilicon reduction process is open to a serious objection, which at the time its use was proposed was thought to be sufficient to raise some doubts as to its success, at least on a high production basis. The temperature range at which the reaction is carried out—namely, 2100" to 2150°F.—is very close to the failure temperature of the material of which the retort is made. It is so close that for a time it was assumed it might make commercial use of the process an impossibility. However, at the time under discussion, the demand for magnesium was so great that it was felt by those who had to go ahead and produce this essential metal that the emergency warranted their taking a chance on this process. Subsequent developments have fully justified the soundness of their decision. Fortunately for the war effort, when the plants were put into operation it was discovered that although the retorts did collapse in rather short periods of time, as predicted, they could be blown back into operable shape by application of high-pressure air. This practical method of operation so relieved the situation that the problem disappeared. Nevertheless, if the process had not been successful, or the production of magnesium by the electrolytic process had not been able to keep pace with demands, our war program would have been seriously impaired. Fireless Cooker&apos;&apos; Process For this reason a program was set up and assigned for the development of a new method that had been suggested to the War Production Board in 1941. It is believed justifiable in terming the method "new" for several reasons: (I) while utilizing the same (ferrosilicon) process as the Pidgeon, hence involving similar reactions, the type of retort or furnace is essentially different, (2) the method of operation, reaction temperatures, etc., differ materially, and, most important of all, (3) the problems to be overcome in making the process successful were not and could not have been anticipated by anything previously known about the Pidgcon process. In a previous paper&apos; the authors have investigated the structure of the oxide films formed on most of the metals that make up the alloys of this study. The metals were studied in order to provide basic information on the structures, both physical and chemical, of the oxide films and to determine how these structures are effected by the temperature, time of oxidation, and surface preparation. It was felt that an understanding of the physical and chemical structure as well as the stability of the oxide film might furnish clues as to the nature of the reaction process and the protective quality of the film. The oxidation of the metals was studied over the temperature range 300&apos; to 7o0°C. except for copper, wherc the range selected was 100&apos; to 500°C. The results of these studies were presented in graphical form as existence diagrams of the oxides on a time-temperature scale. For some of the metals the existence diagrams were simple and showed few chemical transitions, but there were numerous cases where the physical state of the oxide surface was a function of time and temperature. In general the physical state of the oxide surface changed with increasing temperature so as to increase the sharpness of the diffraction patterns and to cause orientation effects to be more pronounced. Deviatiois in lattice Darameters from X-ray values were noted. In general these deviations were of positive nature and may be due to solid solution of the metal in the oxide lattice. This effect might be expected in thin oxide films. In a study of the oxidation of alloys containing two or more metals, there may arise the complicating factor of identification of the oxides formed. A thorough understanding of the oxides formed on the pure metals, therefore, was, essential before investigation of the oxidation of alloys. In this paper it is our purpose to present a study of the following problems: 1. The existence diagrams of various alloys. 2. The effect of the structure of the alloying metal on the existence diagram of iron. 3. The effect of the percentage of chromium on the oxides formed on Fe-Cr alloys. 4. The relationships, if any, between the oxides formed and the protective quality of the oxides. The following alloys are included in this study: alloys of iron with body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic and other metals, 13 Cr-Fe, 18-8 stainless steel, K4²B, Nichrome V, Hipernik, Inconel, Stellite "²I," Refractaloy, Kovar, mild steel, a series of Cr-Fe alloys and a series of Co-Fe alloys. Since many of the commercial alloys in this list contain more than two metals, various complicating factors in the identification of the oxides formed may arise.

Y.-I should like to ask Mr. Neale how the members of the production committees at the individual mines, who came from the mine workers themselves, were chosen or appointed; also from what classes of employees they usually came? J. B. NEALE.-In the union fields, they were chosen by a local. In the non-union fields, they were chosen either by the men in mass meeting or by the company officials. The last way was very unsatisfactory because it gave the men an opportunity to say that they were going to be passed upon as to whether they were slackers or not, by men chosen by the company. When they were chosen by the locals or at mass meetings of the workers, the appointments have been very much more satisfactory. R. D. HALL, ? New York, N. Y.-The matter of inefficiency on the part of the operator is one that I think we may well take into account, because there is a very large inefficiency on the part of the coal operator; it has arisen from reasons almost beyond his control and will continue for these same reasons. It is no use arguing a moral responsibility on the part of the operator, when you make efficiency very largely a loss to the operator who puts it in force. If you ask a man working on a clay wage to work with more efficiency. he says, "Well, I may do it or I may not," it all depends how he feels, but he does not lose anything financially by not working hard. If you ask the man who is working by the ton to put out more tons, he makes a profit by putting out more tons. How is it with the operator? If he gives a man all the cars he needs and all the power he needs, if he runs after his working men and waits on them, he does not get his coal out any cheaper than before.. He gives the man a better chance and there is more efficiency, but at the same time he has increased his expenses all along the line. At the end of the year he finds that his profits have been less than if he had had less efficiency. The efficiency is really against him in many ways. Because he gets a larger tonnage, he reduces the overhead to a certain extent; but hiss tonnage may not be any greater because he may work fewer days. As Mr. Taylor remarked some tine ago, supposing he puts in a machine that is very much more effective than any he had before, he has the same scale; the miner gets out more coal, but he himself does not get any benefit out of it because he has a scale fixed, so much per ton.

It is well-established that hydrostatic pressure distribution is hardly achieved during uniaxial compaction of powders. All the previous investigations1-4 give consistent results and this variation is attributed to the die-wall friction. The conclusions are based on measurements of the density of very small portions of the compact. Although the analysis of the density or the strain distribution in the compact is very helpful in obtaining information about the stress distribution within a powder compact, it does not describe the problem from a more fundamental point of view. The densification in metal powder compacts takes place chiefly by plastic deformation (ignoring particle rearrangement) at the points of contact of the powder particles. The onset of yielding and subsequent growth of the contact areas (for spherical powders) take place fixed by a constant stress equal to three times the yield stress in tension or compression,5-7 assuming little or no work hardening. Therefore, by deforming spherical powders in the die and measuring the contact areas on each particle, the load at each contact point can be determined. In the present investigation, this was done by hot-pressing uniform spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The details of the experiment have been described elsewhere.&apos; The spheres were studied for the size and the number of contact points on each particle using a specially designed goniometer. It was found that the deformed faces that were approximately normal to the direction of pressing were about 2.2 times larger than those parallel to the direction of pressing. Fig. 1 shows the typical deformed sphere. A detailed study showed that the mean value of the contact areas on each sphere was within 5 pct for all the spheres in the die (ignoring those touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die).&apos; The spheres touching the die walls and the top and bottom of the die were found to have larger contact areas (8 to 10 pct) which indicates higher pressures in these regions of the compact and thus higher compact densities in these regions. These results show that density distribution calculated from such an experiment will give results consistent with the previous investigators. Meteor Crater, Arizona, is a natural wonder which for years has been the subject of considerable discussion and study as to its origin and age (Fig. 1). Of the various theories advanced regarding the origin, two have been considered as most probable by a majority of investigators. The first theory is that the crater was formed by a meteorite or a swarm of meteoric material striking the earth at a high velocity and burying itself. The second theory is that the crater was formed by a "steam explosion" from hot solutions or gases coming from underneath the present sedimentary beds which overlie the area. In order to obtain more detailed information regarding the conditions existing at the crater, the present management decided to have a detailed geophysical examination made. The origin of the crater is of considerable scientific importance and interest. More or less active mining operations have been carried out during the past 20 years by various groups who believed that the crater was of meteoric origin, and who hoped that sufficient quantities of such material had been buried to be commercially valuable. Fragments of meteoric material found on the surface of the ground in the debris around the rim gave analysis of approximately 92 per cent iron and 8 per cent nickel, with some platinum and iridium. The material having a gross value of approximately $50 per ton, mining would be commercially profitable if sufficient quantities of the material existed in condition for mining. In the early work numerous drill holes and shallow shafts were put down, mainly in the northern portion of the crater. Pulverized material and debris caused considerable difficulty, and in an effort to overcome this the present management started a 1500-ft., two-compartment shaft on the south rim of the crater and outside of the fill zone. The intention was to sink the shaft in the solid rock outside of the crater, and then to crosscut toward the crater at a depth of 1500 ft. The work was finally stopped when a depth of 650 ft. was reached, because water poured into the shaft through large cracks and fissures in the rock. EFFICIENT handling of large tonnages in open-pit mining demands, primarily, an abundance of well fragmented rock. To accomplish this, a drilling and blasting department composed of a well-knit, versatile group of workers and supervisors must be established. Some costs will remain relatively on the same level over a period of years, while others can be greatly lowered as will be shown. The Utah Copper Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Bingham Canyon, Utah, has been ever alert for improvements in operating methods and equipment to gain increased efficiency and lower costs. BINGHAM CANYON MINE The greatest dimension of the mine is 8000 ft northeast-southwest with a width of 5000 ft southeast-northwest. From the lowest level, at an elevation of 6040 ft above sea-level, the mountain rises in 27 benches on the west side to W level (elevation 7800 ft) and 21 benches on the east side to Q level (elevation 7460 ft). At the inception of open-pit mining in 1906, the overcapping of leached porphyry had to be removed to reach a commercial grade of sulphide ore. The overcapping or waste now remaining is quartzite with intercalated limestone beds. The limestones are usually soft in nature except in the south-middle portion of the mine where they have been metamorphized along the contact zone. This area usually gives drilling and blasting operations a great deal of trouble. Here occurs the greatest amount of secondary blasting, as the well-established fracture planes cause the altered beds to break into large boulders. Several massive quartzite "ribs" occur in the overburden, and as a result, the uniform breakage is difficult to obtain. The major quartzite areas have been subjected to complex folding, fracturing and faulting because of the intrusion of the underlying stock. The monzonite porphyry, which carries the commercial values, presents no serious drilling problem because of its softness and extensive minute fracturing throughout the mass. A series of major slips or faults pass through the ore body which, although of considerable advantage to the drilling and blasting department, sometimes works to the disadvantage of the track department. Drilling and blasting of the porphyry apparently becomes easier as depth is attained, but highly siliceous streaks throughout the pit still present difficulties. At no place is the rock of such character as to allow excavation without preparations. On certain higher elevations or levels, old fill material can be dug by the shovels, but only at some risk to equipment because of bank slippage. Several methods of analyzing pressure build-up data in wells have been presented by various authors. This paper reviews the theory and method of D. R. Horner and presents example calculations performed on data obtained by testing several different types of wells. These calculations include, (1) graphical estimation of final static pressure, (2) determination of the productive capacity of the pay away from the well bore and. (3) the degree to which the formation adjacent to the well bore has been damaged by completion or other causes. The methods of testing and precautions which should be taken to assure the best data possible are discussed. Limitations and reliability of calculated results are also treated. INTRODUCTION Pressure testing of wells is generally limited to the determination of producing and static mean formation pressures. The so-called "static" pressure determination.. along with PVT, electric log and production data, enable the reservoir engineer to determine, within reasonable limits, the drive mechanism of the reservoir and in some cases. the amount of edge water encroachment. Producing pressure tests enable calculation of productivity indices and allow the engineer to plan the systematic production of a pool for optimum conservation of suhsurface energy. The radial flow formula advanced by Muskat&apos; has been based on the assumption of incompressible radial fluid flow. It has been known that reservoir fluids do not behave in an ideally incompressible manner. For example, incompressible flow theory indicates a simple logarithmic relationship between the difference of the instantaneous and static well pressures when plotted against time. &apos;The latter stages of this type of plot of pressure build-up data generally show a marked devia-, tion from the earlier straight line trend. which deviation may be shown to be due to the compressible flow of fluids toward the well bore. Shut-in times of 24, 48. 72. or at most 96 hours are currently in wide use for determining so-called "static" reservoir pressure. Due to the continuation of compressible flow of fluids into the well bore long after this arbitrarily taken shut-in time, the determination of static pressures has almost invariably resulted in lower than equilibrium values. Materials balance calculations made early in the life of a reservoir often result in a calculated reserve which later observations prove to be too low. Failure to obtain reliable "static" reservoir pressures within the prescribed 24 or 48-hour build-up period has undoubtedly been a major factor in obtaining these low estimates. Comparison of theoretical and actual productivity performance has indicated that formation damage and not being able to attain true static pressures have been partially responsible for the observed discrepancies. Research into the theory of compressible flow behavior has resulted in methods of applying these theories to the testing of wells. Application of the developed theories to pressure build-up performance indicates that in many cases the following can be estimated. 1. The static reservoir pressure. 2. The in-place effective formation permeability away from the well bore. 3. The degree or extent by which the formation has been damaged adjacent to the well bore, either through completion methods or subsequent damage due to fluid entry. REVIEW OF THEORY Horner2 has shown that the pressure build-up within a "point source" well is approximated by the following formula: Equation (1) is the approximate "point source" solution to the radial compressible flow equation advanced by Muskat. The solution assumes the following: 1. A point source well is producing at constant rate from the center of an infinite reservoir with a constant pressure at its external boundary. 2. The fluid flowing is present in one phase only. 3. The compressibility and absolute viscosity of the fluid remain essentially constant over the range of temperature and pressure variation encountered. 4. The well i.; shut-in at the sand face arid there is 110 after production into the well bore. 5. The formation permeability is homogeneous in the direction of flow. From Equation (1) it can be seen that if an ideal well were shut-in while producing from a reservoir under the conditions assumed, the pressure build-up would be a logarithmic func-

The efficient recovery and preparation of small sizes of anthracite called No. 4 Buckwheat (3/32 by 1/32 in.) and No. 5 Buckwheat (1/32 in. by 0), pre-sent a difficult problem to the anthracite operators. In many instances preparation of these sizes, particularly No. 5 anthracite, is extremely inefficient. In many of the older preparation plants, inadequate facilities, and often none at all, were provided as an integral part of the plant for cleaning this fine anthracite. Consequently, much of the material smaller than 3/32 in. was discarded. As the demand for these sizes increased, facilities for preparing the fine sizes were often crowded into existing structures with consequent sacrifices of capacities and efficiency. In addition to this condition, the methods of preparing the finest sizes are being developed in an attempt to improve their efficiencies. Because the demand for small sizes of anthracite still is increasing, many operators would benefit by investigating and improving the cleaning equipment employed on these sizes. The object of this paper is to de- scribe a stationary screen device from which the underflow is restricted by orifices, called a launder screen, along with operating results of several applications of this screen; a settling tank in which two classified products are produced by the installation of a cylindrical partition of smaller diameter than the original tank, one product being recovered from the small tank created by the partition and one product from the space between the inner and outer tank walls; a small pocket classifier or hydraulic trap for use in removing high ash particles from a sludge flow; the classification or segregation of sludge solids occurring in a 16 in. diam pipe flow by analysis of samples procured at different zones; and the operating results of a Fahrenwald sizer, as well as the performance of the concentrating tables handling the classified products. These simple devices were employed at the collieries of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Company Incorporated, Lansford. Pa., in order to improve preparation results on the fine sizes of anthracite. Launder Screens The launder screen is a screening and dewatering device which probably could be used advantageously in the flow diagram of many fine coal plants. Fig 1 shows that it consists of a stationary screen constructed by placing 6 in. high partitions every 6 in. along a launder. Holes are then drilled on 6-in. centers across the bottom of the launder to receive pipe bushings of the desired diameter. The screen cloth is tacked on top of the partitions. When water and solids are fed to the screen, only a small portion of the total water is removed through the orifices in each compartment so that the water in the feed is distributed evenly over the whole length of the screen. The screening action which results is very efficient because the solids are kept in a fluid condition for the full length of the screen. SIX years have passed since the last grindability table was published.&apos; In that time the list has been increased with many new tests, and the development of the new Third Theory of Comminution2 has made possible the reduction of all results to a consistent work index value. In this tabulation all grindability and crushability test results are given in terms of the work index, with formulas for reversion to the older units if desired. The average values for 57 different classes of materials are listed in Table I. The total number of work index values listed is 1211, and the overall average work index is 14.42. The complete tabulation, with each test listed alphabetically both under material type and under company name, can be obtained by writing to the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Processing Machinery Department, Milwaukee 1, Wisconsin. The work index Wi is the calculated total work input in kilowatt-hours per short ton required to re- duce from theoretically infinite particle size to 80 pct passing 100 microns, or to approximately 67 pct passing 200 mesh. The work inputs required per ton for the same size reduction of different materials are directly proportional to their work indexes, and according to the Third Theory the work input per ton is inversely proportional to the square root of the diameter of the product particles. Burrell, former coordinator of raw materials, Pittsburgh, Penna., has been made manager of raw materials for Columbia-Geneva Div. of U. S. Steel Co., San Francisco. J. H. Cazier has resigned as general superintendent of Bagdad Copper Corp., Bagdad, Ariz., to devote full time with E. A. Scholz to the operation of the Copper King, Phillips and Black Pearl Mines near Bagdad. They have operated the Copper King zinc mine for more than two years.. Production started from the Black Pearl and Phillips tungsten mines during the past year. Robert T. Chapman has resigned from Reynolds Mining Corp. to join Westmoreland Manganese Corp. as general superintendent. Annan Cook, with Kennecott Copper Corp.&apos;s exploration dept. for the past three years, has been appointed district geologist for the eastern states.
