by their overdogmatic picture of geology and their resulting drastic oversimplification and idealization of geologic features. I am in hearty disagreement with the recommendation that geophysics should be done by cooperative work between a geologist and a geophysi-cist. That arrangement would be comparable to doing petrography by having a physicist at the microscope and a geologist sitting by his side. The interpretation of the geological significance of geophysical data can be done efficiently only by a physicist who has become also a good geologist or by a geologist who is also a good geophysicist. Less Well-trained Men The rank and file, composing perhaps two-thirds of the personnel of exploratory geophysics, is not, and should not be, composed of highly trained men. The routine, stereotyped character of the work and the impossibility of promotion of more than a few from these lower ranks even under the best circumstances justify companies in filling the bulk of these rank and file positions with men having only a bachelor's degree at the most. There can be a wide range of training for such positions, although certain lines of study are preferred for certain kinds of work, and different employers have different preferences. For work in gravitational and magnetic prospecting, first preference will be for men having geological training and second for men with civil engineering training. In seismic work, men with geological training are preferred by some employers for computers; physicists, electrical engineers and all whose technical education has covered radio circuits are preferred for the other technical positions. Collegiate training in geophysical prospecting brings no preference and by many employers is given a slightly inferior rating. One large company seldom hires men who have just graduated with a major in geophysical prospecting. This prejudice is based on the reasoning that much of what is learned in college is obsolete or obsolescent, that most of the techniques learned in college will have to be unlearned, because different from those used by the employing company, and that in the long run additional courses in basic physics, mathematics and geology are of more value to a man than the courses on geophysical prospecting. Although age-hardening in an aluminum-base alloy containing magnesium was observed by Alfred Wilml as early as 1911, it was not until 1919 that a theory of the mechanism of age-hardening was proposed. Merica, Waltenberg and Scott12 studying the age-hardening characteristics of Duralumin at the National Bureau of Standards, came to the conclusion that age-hardening of this alloy is caused by the precipitation of CuAl2, which is less soluble at the aging temperature than at the solution heat-treating temperature. It was postulated that the initially precipitated particles were of fine colloidal dimensions but that they gradually grew in size. Maximum hardness was assumed to be attained when the particles reached a critical size. This theory was at first received skeptically, since it was a widely accepted view at that time that the solid solution state should represent the hardest state of an alloy. Shortly thereafter, Jeffries and Archer proposed their well-known slip interference theory.'13 They suggested that age-hardening was accomplished by the precipitated particles acting as keys interfering with slip along crystallographic glide planes. They showed that this mechanical theory led direct,ly to the assumption that maximum hardening would be produced by particles of a critical size, which they suggested would have a diameter approximately 10 times that of the aluminum atom. This contribution amplified and explained so rationally the age-hardening theory of Merica, Waltenberg and Scott that wide acceptance resulted. Objections to Simple Precipitation Theory From time to time certain experimental facts have been cited against the simple precipitation theory. The first of these was the discovery by Fraenkel4 that, although the electrical resistivity of Duralumin decreased during aging at higher temperatures (from 100' to 250' C.), it increased during aging at ordinary temperatures. Drilling in Missouri in 1939 was marked by wildcatting in the northern half of the state. The total completions numbered 82, exactly half the 164 of 1938. There were 15 gas wells with an initial open flow of 6,383,150 cu. ft., 4 oil wells with about 40 bbl. initial production, and 63 dry holes. The wildcatting followed the widely publicized leasing activity in the Forrest City Basin in northwestern Missouri, northeastern Kansas, southeastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa. THE young metallurgist of today who thinks casually of the technical literature of the steel industry might conclude that little has been published concerning the Bessemer process. This conclusion is true as relating to the last decade or two, but there is a fairly voluminous Bessemer literature in the period of 1860 to 1910, Since that time, however, an entirely new level of metal-lurgical knowledge of steelmaking has been reached; and the present paper is simply an effort to look broadly from this new level and to bring the recorded history of the process up to date, It is an effort to appraise the acid Bessemer method of steelmaking in the light of today's technical knowledge thereof. In this paper matters of history will be dealt with only insofar as they contribute to an understanding of today's situation. Attention will be directed to the apparent causes of past developments in seeking to perceive the true direction of trends now in existence and effective as bearing upon future developments. The paper will discuss the economics of the Bessemer process, but only to the extent that will bear upon the metallurgist's understanding of his respon-sibility. The problem of the quality of Bes-semer steel will be reviewed and examples will be given of the technical data upon which the reasoning of the paper is based, Matters of engineering design, mechanical maintenance, operation and metallurgical investigation will be surveyed. Compari-sons will be made between the Bessemer and open-hearth processes for the sake of clear and ready understanding,

MANY experimental and theoretical investigations have been made on the processes involved in annealing and recrystallization of metals. Most of these, however, have treated the time element as constant and heat-treatments used have been for relatively short times. Aside from the early work by Carpenter and Elam,1 the few that have investigated the effect of time on the processes have usually done so for fairly short time periods. During recent years the growing interest in long-time creep properties of metals and alloys under stress has made increasingly important a better knowledge of the recrystallization during prolonged heating. The recrystallization temperature of 70-30 brass given by Clark and White2 in 1932 was somewhat above 400°F. (204°C.) but under 500° (260°C.), whereas in our laboratory recrystallization has been observed in creep specimens at 204°C, the lowest temperature of Clark and White's range. Since the creep properties are quite different above and below the recrystallization temperature, erroneous conclusions can readily be drawn by the application of short-time recrystallization data to creep problems. It was thus considered of both practical and theoretical value to make long-time annealing studies near the minimum recrystallization temperature. In this way useful additions could be made to data on recrystallization temperatures and, since the reactions in this range are relatively slow, additional insight could be obtained into the factors involved in annealing. Several comprehensive reviews of recrystallization processes have been written,3-5 therefore only a brief review of the generally accepted facts will be given here.

In the spring of 1935 the authors undertook to compare the geomagnetic and direct-current carth-resistivity methods of tracing a concealed dike along its strike. An area near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was selected, where a diabase dike was known. For rapid reconnaissance the magnetic method offers several advantages ovcr the electrical. The resistivity method is useful in determining the position of underground water, a factor of consideration in regions where mining is contemplated. All factors considered, the coincidence between the positions of the dike as determined by the two methods is striking.

RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AT ITS MEETING ON APRIL 17, 1936 Recognizing the fact that the problems of the committee named by the Board to prepare the " official ticket" for officers and Directors of the Institute are various and difficult; and desiring to assist this committee by setting forth some of the principles that should guide the committee and some of the qualifications that should be required of candidates, the following instructions are formulated and the Secretary is directed to publish them in MINING AND METALLURGY concurrently with the publication of the names of each newly appointed Nominating Committee and to send a copy to each member of the Committee. NOMINATIONS TO BE MADE Each year the Nominating Committee is to select "official" candidates for eight places, as follows: (1) President and Director (2) Vice-President and Director (3) Vice-President and Director (4) Director (5) Director (6) Director (7) Director (8) Director GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION The Bylaws provide that "the Nominating Committee shall, so far as practicable, distribute representation on the Board geographically." Pursuant to this provision, the United States, Canada and Mexico have been divided into fifteen districts, as shown on the official map.* Districts 1, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12,13,14, and 15 are assigned one Directorship each; District 2, three Directorships; District 3, eight Directorships; District 4, two Directorships; and Districts 7, 8, and 9, two Directorships between them. It will be the duty of the Nominating Committee to make selections that will give effect to this allocation of Directorships. There is nothing to prevent a Director being named to succeed himself. Attention is called to the: fact that many Institute members now resident in New York formerly lived in the West, South, or North and still have intimate business connections that compel them to visit various parts of the country periodically. Such men are particularly valuable as Directors and their nomination and election tends to minimize the objection that a large number of Directors reside in New York.

COAL-CLEANING plants using the launder process generally wash the fine coal (minus 3/8 or minus 5/16-in.) separately in a plant consisting of washing launders or troughs placed one below another and sometimes supplemented by additional washing equipment such as tables and jigs. The coal and its associated impurities enters the feed end of the top launder, with a current of push water. As the material moves along the impurities, being heavier than coal, settle toward the bottom of the launder and are drawn off, with some coal, through "free discharge" boxes to the launder below. These boxes were given their name because their discharge falls freely; that is, it does not discharge into a water seal. Thus the impurities are progressively concentrated in the lower launders until box products are sufficiently free of coal to be discharged to refuse. The overflows of the upper launders go to clean coal while the overflow of the lowest launder, and perhaps that of the one immedi-ately above, is usually recirculated to the plant feed. Thus the bulk of the clean coal is removed rapidly and the impurities are concentrated more slowly. The chief purpose of this paper is to present the cleaning data of such a plant under different operating conditions.

For relative gravity measurements, the author in 1918 described an instrument1 of which the essential part consists of a highly astatized, standing pendulum turning about a horizontal elastic axis. This type of instrument has been used recently in practical field work, therefore a description of its principle and technical development is given herein. Part I, describing the principle, is a direct translation of the original Swedish paper.l Part II gives an account of the practical elaboration of the instrument, together with some description of measurements performed. I. Principle of Using Astatized Pendulums1 In order to reduce the trouble and waste of time attending the use of ordinary pendulums in measuring the force of gravity, various instruments of another type have been suggested for relative determinations, as a rule arranged in such a way that the attraction of the earth on a certain body or mass of fluid is balanced by elastic force from a spring or a shut-in mass of gas. A change in the force of gravity is then made manifest as a change in the position of equilibrium of the body, in that the deformation of the spring (or compression of the gas) is changed. With such instruments there are, however, great difficulties in keeping the elastic force constant or its variation known with sufficient exactitude, because of elastic after-working, influence of temperature, and so on. The author suggests for relative determinations of gravity another type of instrument, in which two directional forces (control coefficients) rather than two forces are compared with one another. By "directional force" or "control coefficient" is meant that quantity in a rotatable system that, multiplied by the angle of deflection, indicates the moment counteracting the deflection. In this way it will be possible greatly to reduce the influence of the elastic after-working, which in instruments with spring devices acts so disturbingly. Activity in the oil fields of the state was at a low ebb during the year because of the longest period of low prices that has yet prevailed, which has been detrimental to both the eastern and western sections of the state. Production for the state as a whole shows a drop of 209,192 bbl. during 1939, the total being 5,356,963 bbl. The loss is in the production of the western division, where a loss of approximately 300,000 bbl. more than offset a gain of approximately 100,000 bbl. in the eastern division. The loss in the western division can be attributed to decline in drilling activity due to the low prices prevailing, which were caused by flooding of the normal markcts with cheap Illinois crude. The gain in the eastern division is the result of repressuring operations begun in previous years and now showing results, and not to any renewed drilling activity. Gas development in western Kentucky during 1939 was of minor importance. In eastern Kentucky approximately 50 producing gas wells were drilled, which were sufficient for present market with excess reserves already developed. With the severe winter and additional industry load every gas well connected has been on line for the past three months. Although all demands are being met, development will be greatly increased during 1940 to meet depletion. From the geological point of view, the drilling activity in the western division developed additional information of benefit. Several wells on blocks of acreage assembled in previous years were drilled in the deeper parts of the Western Coal Basin—southern part of the Illinois Basin— giving for the first time accurate information about the Pennsylvanian and lower formations down to and through the Devonian.

SPODUMENE is a lithium-bearing pyroxene, and is an important source of lithium compounds. Because of its high alumina and lithia content. it might be a desirable constituent of glass batches. The use of spodumene in ceramics will undoubtedly increase, as it has been shown that a mixture of the proper proportions of this mineral with soda feldspar and potash feldspar has a much lower maturing temperature upon firing than has any one of the three components.1 The mineral spodumene seldom occurs as pure mineral, but ordinarily with feldspars, mica and quartz. All spodumene-bearing rocks tested contained these minerals as gangue. Small amounts of iron and manganese oxides also were present, usually as stains on the silicate grains. Mica associated with the spodumene carried a considerable amount of lithia. This was discovered in flotation tailings, which, although virtually free of spodumene grains when examined microscopically, showed 0.4 to 0.5 per cent Li20 on chemical analysis. The lithia content of micas picked from the North Carolina spodumene rock was variable. Some samples contained little lithia, others more than 3 per cent. In 1938, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston, [t] the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Tennessee Mineral Products Corporation, undertook to study the beneficiation of North Carolina spodumene by froth flotation. The Bureau had previously published investigations on the beneficiation of spodumene.2, 3 The methods described in the second publication3 did not give good results with badly weathered spodumene rock, so that more thorough investigation of the subject was warranted. A PAPER prepared by James A. Adams, development engineer of the fitline & Smelter Supply Co., and presented at the last Annual Meeting of the A.I.M.E. in New York City, de- scribed a new automatic pulp density controller which has had a most favorable reception. Manual control has until now been the universal practice in spite of its shortcomings; samples of pulp for density determination were often improperly taken, and only at the operator's convenience, so that the trend in density changes was frequently missed, and the grinding circuit al- lowed to operate under something less than the most efficient conditions.

This is something new in my life. A lot of you men here today I do not know, and some I do know. So if you have any remarks to make, I wish you would give your name and the name of your company. This is the first Acid Meeting which has been held under the auspices of the National Open-Hearth Steel Conference, and I hope it is a success. Whether it is a success or not depends entirely upon the support we get. If it does get good support, I have the idea it will be continued as a regular feature of the National Open-Hearth Steel Conference. We all think we have pretty good practices. But we can all learn and I hope that you, gentlemen, who take issue with the things someone else has said will stand up and give your opinions. Otherwise, the meeting will fall rather flat, and we won't get a great deal out of it; and there will not be enough interest shown by the National Committee to continue to place the meeting on the regular yearly program.

LEAD is a dull and sober metal, and in times of economic stress it en- joys, or at least occupies, a position which partakes somewhat of its physical lethargy and stability. The past ten years have witnessed in this country a decline in the production of lead, and a shrinkage of ore reserves, following closely the general economic situation. Metal prices have not justified exploration and development of new sources. Momentary rallies in industry have brought no response from lead.

IN ITS capacity for service to the public the oil industry is truly gargantuan. But it is only in this respect that the industry is the voracious, many-headed, many-armed and many-handed creature it has been so often painted by those who know it not too intimately and only from the outside. Contrasted sharply with the immensity of the service rendered is the relatively modest share of the national income which has gone to those who provided the tools and the mental and manual labor with which the service was performed. No doubt the relative meagreness of the re- ward was the result of a combination of fortuitous circumstances respecting the nature and accessibility of the industry's raw material and the extensive development and application of the most advanced technology, spurred by an intense competition.

THE year 1939 has seen the iron and steel industry driving for efficiency with unabated zeal. "Efficiency" is here used in the sense of enabling the customer to do more with less, either supplying him with more economically priced steels or with higher priced steels that will do a job more economically. The plain carbon steels have been improved tremendously in quality be- cause of recent control tests. All steel companies have been urged to hold to .closer chemical control, closer standards, soundness, and more control on grain size, and now attention is being directed to closer control of hardening properties. Better control of open- hearth operations undoubtedly will result in an increase in the application of special carbon steel. Further, with a better understanding of quenching, the present trend to study the quenching of this class of steels will be ex- tended. These steels will then be used for purposes to which they are best suited. Utilization of special carbon bars and large shapes seems to be developing less slowly than special car- bon in the form of strip. There are many reasons for this and the future development of this trend will be important. Continued development of the manufacture of parts from strip and sheet to replace forgings, and of formed; structural members such as channels or welded pipe, is notable. Special carbon sheets with nonaging properties have been produced during the year; they maintain a higher degree of ductility over a longer time and are less sensitive to the changes which took place in the former product when stocked.

DR. TILNEY, the great expert on the study of the development of the brain of human beings and animals, tells us that the greatest difference between the human brain and the brain of animals is that man alone has shown evidence of being able to predict the future. Just why he throws overboard the busy bee who lays up honey for the winter, the squirrel who gathers nuts, and the humble ant, I do not know. At any rate, it is nice to be assured by an authority that we have this power of prophecy. My own experience with attempting to prophesy the future has convinced me that our only possibility of being good prophets is to be good students of history.
