The great coal strike of 1902, which confined the work at the Short Mountain colliery of the Lykens Valley Coal Com pany almost exclusively to pumping, gave an opportunity to determine with considerable accuracy the cost of pumping the water from these very old, extensive and wet mines. This colliery, which is located in the extreme southwestern end of the anthracite coal-field, has been operated continuously since 1836, and has shipped 7,747,313 tons of coal. This and the Williamstown colliery are the only operations in Dauphin county. The workings cover about 5 miles along the North dip of the extreme westerly end of the basin, with the operating slopes near the center. They extend around the westerly spoon of the basin and back about 31/4 miles easterly on the South dip. The mines are very deep, the present workings ex tending to 711 ft. below sea-level, and about 1600 ft. below the lowest surface-opening. The coal is hoisted principally from the Short Mountain slope, which is 1550 ft. long, with 26 to 68 degrees dip, and from an inside slope, No. 4, 800 ft. long, with 52 to 72 degrees dip. The ordinary capacity of the colliery is about 1000 tons per day, and the average output for the years 1897 to 1901, in clusive, was 297,000 tons per year. The seams worked are the lowest Red Ash measures, being, respectively, Nos. I, II and III of the coal-bed series, but locally called the " Little Lykens," " Lykens," and " Whites." On the accompanying plan the Lykens seam is shown in full and the Whites in dotted lines. The pumping-plant is divided into four lifts, the pumps being located as shown in the section, Fig. 1, and the plan, Fig. 2.

The practical execution of the design for rolling-mills presented by the writer at the Paris meeting* of thc Iron and Steel Institute in 1900 involves the determination of some questions not yet discussed, among which is the determinatioir of the amount of power required to perform the rolling of pieces of iron and steel of given dimensions. It is necessary to know this factor if we would put motors of proper capacity to the respective pairs of rolls, or, rcciprocally, if, having standard motors at our disposal, we would design grooves to suit them. Moreover, this factor is involved in giving right dimensions to every part of the rolls and housings. Expert designers of engines for driving rolling-mills of the present type receive very indefinite directions, such as: that the motor is to drive a light, medium or heavy train; that it must work with fly-wheel or reversing gear; that the number of revolutions per minute should not exceed 40 or 60, and that at a given speed the power developed should be from 100 to 200 H. P., or from 1,000 to 2,500 13. P. It frequently happens, however, that an cngine of 200 H. P. is forced under the circumstances to press or develop as much as 300 H. P., while, on the other hand, the ,1,500-11. P. engine may be rolling-stock which could be worked with a maximum expenditure of 60 to 80 H. P. Of course such variatior~s as these do not permit the best adjustment of parts or the best economy of power and fuel. The design of roll-trains is even more vaguely limited. The following paper aims to present in a much condensed form the salient results of a detailed geological study of the Bisbee quadrangle, Arizona, carried on during the latter part of the year 1902. It is essentially an abstract of the final official report which will shortly appear in the series of professional papers of the U. S. Geological Survey, accompanied by maps, sections and illustrations. I. Geography. The Bisbee quadrangle, which includes the Warren mining district, lies in Cochise county in the southeastern part of Arizona. It is inclosed between the meridians 109" 45' and 110" 00' and the parallels 31" 30' and 31" 201, the latter being locally the Mexican boundarg line. The area of the quadrangle is about 170 square miles, and includes the southeastern half of the Mule Mountains, one of the smaller of the isolated ranges characteristic of this part of Arizona. The Mule Mountains, while less markedly linear than the Dragoon, Huachuca, Chiricahua, and other neighboring ranges, have a general NW-SE. trend. They may be considered as extending from the old mining town of Tombstone to the Mexican border, a distance of about 30 miles. On the northwest they are separated by the broad, flat floor of Sulphur Spring Valley from the Chiricahua Range, and on the southeast by the similar broad valley of the Rio San Pedro from the Huachuca Range. The maximum width of the range is about 12 miles, and its greatest elevation attained by Mt. Ballard, west of Bisbee, is 7,400 ft. above sea-level. An index-map, showing the geographical position of the Bisbee quadrangle, is shown in Fig. 1. The removal of mine-water by hoisting in tanks instead of pumping, while somewhat a reversion to the methods of the ancients, has come very rapidly into favor in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania during the past few years. In fact, so much so, that at the present time there are at least eight large collieries at which all the water is hoisted, and six more plants are in preparation. The particulars of the plants in operation and under construction, as far as decided on, are given in the tables on pages 107 and 108. Besides these, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western R.R. Co. is constructing a hoist of large capacity for a depth approximating 500 feet, to be located in the Keyser Valley, near Scranton. The hoists will be driven by electric motors, geared directly to the sheaves. The Lehigh Valley Coal Company is planning a large hoist for the Packer collieries in the Shenandoah district, but no work has been done on this as yet. The earliest regular hoisting, I believe, mas done by means of semi-cylindrical tanks (Fig. 1) at the Nanticoke collieries of the Susquehanna Coal Company. These tanks were attached under the regular shaft-carriages, taking in water through six large clack-valves in the bottom, and discharging through an endgate opened by a lever which was operated by a guide-piece on the shaft head-frame. These tanks were designed July, 1880, by the late J. H. Bowden, one of the very early members of the Institute. Similar tanks are still used in emergencies at the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 shafts of the company. The objections to. their use were: that water could only be hoisted during the night-shift, or when the shafts were not in use for hoisting coal, thus requiring a very large sump, and greatly limiting the water capacity of the plants; that the alternate wetting and drying

A party, consisting of George I. Adams, of the United States Geological Survey, A. H. Purdue, of the University of Arkansas, and Ernest F. Burchard, was engaged, during the summer of 1902, in the study of the zinc- and lead-deposits of Northern Arkansas. An extensive report on this field is now in preparation. The following preliminary statement of results and conclusions is made in advance of the final publication, which will be accompanied by detailed geologic maps and other illustrations and a fuller treatment of the subject. Location.—The Northern Arkansas field embraces Marion county and adjacent portions of Boone, Baxter, Newton and Searcy counties. Outside of this area there are a few scat tered mines, notably in Sharp and Lawrence counties. The mining development lies north of the Boston mountains, in what is known as the Ozark Plateau. The country has a broken surface, as a result of dissection by streams, and there are numerous exposures of the mineral-bearing horizons in the valley slopes. This has greatly facilitated prospecting. History.—Lead-ore was discovered in Northern Arkansas by the early explorers and pioneers, and at first was utilized for rifle-ballets. Later, it attracted considerable attention, and in the '50's was smelted in the vicinity of Lead Hill. There was a revival of the industry during the "70's, but the cost of transportation was so great that it was practically abandoned. Zinc-ores at first attracted little attention, probably because they were not so well understood. Before the Civil War, however, some zinc was smelted. In the '80's, prospecting was carried on generally throughout the field, and resulted in finding zinc at so many places and so readily accessible that

In addition, he has published the results of important work, on the castability of ternary alloys, on the determination of oxygen and-oxides in steel, and on high-temperature oxidationn and scaling of steel. IN THE Alumni catalogue of Amherst College and with the Class of 1848 is recorded the name of Louis Palemon Ledoux, who on graduating studied for the ministry at the Union Theological Seminary in New York and was ordained by the Presbyterian church. Louis Palemon Ledoux entered college from Louisiana and, as his name implies, was of French ancestry. His departure from the traditions of his forebears in register-ing in a Protestant college and later becoming a Presby-terian minister brought about some alienation from his family which, however, softened with the passage of years and disappeared between later generations. In time the Rev. Louis P. Ledoux was married to Kate C. Reid of New York City and was stationed for a year at Newport, Ky., where on Nov. 2, 1852, his oldest son Albert Reid Ledoux was born. The next year, the family moved to Monroe, Mich., where for two years the young clergyman was pastor of the Presbyterian church. A call to Richmond, Va., then led them to live from 1855-1858 in the, Virginia capital, but the father became afflicted with what was then regarded as a mysterious ailment, malaria, and to escape it migrated in 1858, when the young boy Albert was a little over five years old, to Cornwall-on-Hudson, and became pastor of the Presbyterian church in the lower village near the river. In 1861 he was honored with the degree of D.D. from the State Uni-versity of Indiana. Some years later throat trouble compelled the Rev. Dr. Ledoux to give up preaching and led him to establish a school for boys, known as the Storm King School, above Cornwall, on the slopes of Storm King Mountain. As a boy Albert Ledoux roamed the woods of Storm King and became deeply attached to this .wonderful hillside, commanding as it does an extended view of Newburgh Bay to the north and the remoter reaches of the Hudson. In his later years he built his home on its slopes and continued to roam its woods for his recreation. In later years, also, the writer used to look each October for the fringed gentian which Dr. Ledoux gathered in some secret nook to wear in his lapel. In the Storm King school, Albert Ledoux and his brother Augustus Damon, seven years younger, were educated and entered the School of Mines of Columbia College.

THE LIFE and works of Alexander Agassiz, first president of the Calumet & Hecla Mining Co., were recalled to memory when a monument bearing his statue was unveiled in Agassiz Park, at Calumet, Mich., on Sept. 26, The statue is the work of Paul W. Bartlett, of New York, and was erected by George R. Agassiz, eldest son of Alexander Agassiz. We are indebted to Rodolphe L. Agassiz, now president of the Calumet & Hecla Consolidated, for the accompanying photograph of the statue. The principal address at the unveiling ceremony was delivered by Allen F. Rees, of Houghton, who said, in part: To the world at large Alexander Agassiz was preeminently the man of science. With all his devotion to the industrial life of this district, he found the time to devote to the con-tinuation of his work of scientific research which had been the life work of his fa-ther, Louis Agassiz. Not only did he acquire eminence for his scientific at-tainments and learn-ing, but he was recognized and hon-ored throughout the civilized world for his achievements and accomplishments in the realm of original research. His work in the fields of nat-ural science, in oceanography, in marine zoology, and in other similar lines of research, has added much to our knowledge of the world's mysteries. His life was one of accomplishment also in the industrial world. The union in one life of acknowledged achievement as a scientist and the accomplishment of great results in the prac-tical industrial world is a rare thing, and its possibility has never been exemplified in greater measure than in his life and its results.

In view of the increasingly widespread deterioration of concrete structures as the result of the interaction of the alkalies sodium and potassium released by hydration of portland cement and susceptible rocks and minerals in aggregates, it is believed that a paper summarizing the geographic distribution of these aggregates will be of interest to producers and users of concrete, concrete products, and concrete-making materials.

INTRODUCTION United Nuclear Corporation and Homestake Mining Company are partners in a major uranium mining and milling venture near Grants, New Mexico. The partnership was formerly called Homestake-Sapin Partners and was recently renamed United Nuclear-Homestake Partners (UN-HP). The mill, originally built in 1958, had a capacity of 1,650 tons per day. With subsequent improvements and the addition of the adjacent Homestake - New Mexico Partners mill, the UN-HP mill is currently rated at about 3,500 tons per day. US 4,190,436 - In the cyanide leaching of gold ore in tailing or ore dump piles, or gold ore in vats or on pads, the ore is agitated and oxygenated by introducing timed bursts of air, along with cyanide in a cyclic or regulated manner. US 4,201,749-In the Bayer process production of alumina wherein aluminum hydroxide is precipitated from a sodium aluminate solution for use as seed, sodium oxalate and caustic components are removed from the precipitate by washing it first with a washing liquor which is saturated with sodium oxalate but has little content of caustic, and secondly with hot water. NOW, after a year's continued impact of war, the task of the petroleum-refining industry stands out clearly and looms up in larger aspect. This time it is not, as it was so largely in the first World War, simply a matter of increased quantity- more and more of the same petroleum products that had substantially been standard for years. In this era the emphasis is largely on newer and improved materials which had been produced, if at all, in comparatively insignificant quantities, and for which manufacturing equipment was not available on a large scale. At the beginning of 1942 four great product needs (besides a number of lesser one-) confronted the industry: 100-octane aviation gasoline, toluene for T.N.T. production, high-quality lubricating oils for aviation and Army equipment service, and petroleum chemicals for synthetic rubber manufacture.

SEVEN years ago there was installed in the hospital of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, an ultra-violet ray quartz lamp, the standard equipment which is found everywhere in the offices of physicians and among usual hospital equipment. The use of this lamp was con- fined largely to treatment of pathological cases, still treatment of under-nourished children, run-down anemic people, both men and women, and, as a general tonic, was part of the routine hospital procedure. At the latitude of the Ceur d'Alene district and especially because of the position of the towns in deep canyons, with much overcast and cloudy weather, sunshine is not plentiful at any time of the year; for many of the winter months there is scarcely any. Underground workers, particularly during the winter, have little sun- shine; it is not unusual to have none at all for weeks at a time. Treatment by the ultra-violet ray lamp in the hospital has resulted in many extraordinary benefits but the use of the lamp is expensive and limited. Some weeks ago attention was directed to the automatic solarium equipment of the Burdick Corporation. The doctors strongly recommended the increased use of the ultra-violet lamp for its curative powers and tonic effects, urging that it be made accessible to all employees. Real interest was . . also displayed by employees with the possibility of securing ultra-violet ray treatment for themselves and families under better conditions than it was possible to have by the limited use of the lamp at the hospital. This resulted in the installation of the so-called sun room or automatic solarium as an adjunct to the mine change-house. An annex was built to the change-house, with dressing rooms for women, children and men from other departments, and the outfit put into use on Sept. 5, 1929. The only technical session on Thursday was a continuation of the Symposium on Pyrometry. The members not attending the symposium -made the trip to La Salle. They were welcomed by the Mayor, to whose speech Major Arthur S. Dwight briefly responded. After luncheon the party divided and was taken by automobile to the various chosen points of interest, such as the cement works, the various zinc smelters, the coal mines, and underground cement-rock mines, where underground steam shovels were operating, etc. A special scenic trip was arranged for the ladies. The party returned by special train to Chicago, arriving at 7:30. Those desiring to visit the coal mines at Franklin and Macoupin Coun-ties left by train that evening on a special car for Benton, and were piloted through the field by Mr. Putnam, superintendent of the Old Ben Coal Corpn., Mr. Carroll, assistant general superintendent of the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., and Carl Scholz, general manager of the Vallier Coal Co. Through the courtesy of the various railroads the visitors were furnished a special coach which took them to the various mines with the least delay and enabled them to see more than would be otherwise possible. Mines 8 and 9 of the Old Ben Coal Corpn., at West Frankfort, were first visited; thence the party proceeded to Orient mine of the Chicago; Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co., where luncheon was served, and then proceeded to Vallier, where both the top and the under-ground workings were inspected. The party returned to. Benton and from there proceeded in automobiles to inspect the washery plant of the United States Fuel Co. at that point; and boarded the train reaching Chicago Saturday morning. Several left Benton for their homes without returning to Chicago.
