Pilot-plant and laboratory tests were made on blends of steel plant flue dust and portland cement to determine whether the flue dust could be pelletized for use as a source of iron in dry process cement manufacture. Strength and setting time results showed that an acceptable agglomerate can be made with a Type II portland cement binder. Abrasion-resistant and well-sized pellets were made in a horizontal drum, using a simulated closed circuit, with a binder content of 7.5% and a moisture content below 15%. Pellet quality was found to be relatively insensitive to changes in binder concentration above 5%. Simulations of stockpiling and weathering indicate that little difficulty would be encountered with use of the flue dust pellets in cement plants.

The use of pellets in North American blast furnaces has made the mixes used in the associated sinter plants unique. These mixes generally contain a high percentage of fine waste oxide materials as the principal iron bearing portion of the mix, with iron ores and concentrates added in minor amounts only. Additionally, the sinter basicity is always above one and can be three or higher. This paper will discuss the large body of knowledge and experience developed by one company on this type of sinter mix. Results of laboratory tests will be used to illustrate how mix composition and feed preparation affect sinter productivity and quality.

The flotation technique as employed by Florida phosphate producing companies for the beneficiation of fine phosphate particles has been standardized over the years. Lower recoveries of coarse Phosphate rock by froth flotation technique, however, led to the development of new methods based on skin flotation of phosphate agglomerates. Recent developments of floating coarse rock in large flotation machines have not yet convinced the rock Producers of their higher separation efficiency. It is interesting to note that the selection of a particular machine is still bared on equipment preference by an individual company as well as proven performance of a particular machine for upgrading a specific material. Various techniques which have been developed to beneficiate the coarse phosphate rock have been discussed. Performance of the individual techniques is presented.

Lightweight aggregates include a variety of mineral and rock materials used to provide bulk in concrete building units (block), light- weight structural concrete, and precast concrete units, as plaster aggregate, insulating fill, and other structural and/or insulation purposes. They are distinguished from other mineral aggregate materials by their lighter unit weight- 80 to 100 pounds per cubic foot (pcf) or less for loosely packed lightweight aggregates as compared to 125 pcf or more for crushed stone, sand, gravel, air-cooled slag, and other more common mineral aggregates. The various lightweight aggregate materials may be classified into four groups as follows: 1) Natural Lightweight Aggregate Materials-prepared by crushing and sizing natural rock materials such as pumice, scoria, tuff, breccia, and volcanic cinders. 2) Manufactured Structural Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by pyroprocessing clay, shale, or slate in rotary kilns or on traveling grate sintering machines. 3) Byproduct Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by crushing and sizing foamed and granulated slag, cinders, and coke breeze. With the exception of processed slag, this group is becoming less important as time passes. 4) Manufactured Insulating Ultralight- weight Aggregates-prepared by pyroprocessing ground vermiculite or perlite. This chapter will focus on the use of natural lightweight aggregates and manufactured insulating ultralightweight aggregates, and both the production and use of manufactured structural lightweight aggregates with some comments on byproduct materials. Detailed discussion of the production and use of both expanded and air-cooled slag is presented in a separate chapter in the utilization section of this volume, and there are separate commodity chapters on vermiculite, perlite, pumice, and volcanic cinders. Discussion of the commodities covered elsewhere in the book will be limited to observations on their utilization and relation to other lightweight aggregate materials. All materials considered as lightweight aggregates are derived from some initial natural raw material. While historical definitions have included such organic materials as straw and peat as lightweight aggregates, the discussion in this chapter will restrict itself to lightweight aggregates derived from mineral or rock materials. Thus while the actual lightweight material in use may be a manufactured product, it is derived from an ore or raw material that is obviously a mineral resource. In this context, then, the reserves of raw materials for lightweight aggregate use may include iron ore and flux stone (the components of blast furnace slag) as well as coal (the raw material from which cinders are derived) as well as those clay, shale, and slate deposits that display the characteristics of bloating or controlled expansion when subjected to elevated temperatures (1600 to 2400°F.).

Crushed and broken stone is used directly in construction as an aggregate and accounts for about half the value and two-fifths of the quantity of natural aggregates consumed in the United States. Sand and gravel provide most of the balance of aggregates except for some lightweight materials such as pumice and expanded shale. Conditions necessary for production of crushed stone from a deposit are : 1) Quality-should pass rigid specifications for strength and durability. 2) Cost-low average total delivered cost. Construction aggregates are hard, essentially inert materials suitable for being formed into a stable mass either (1) by the addition of cementing or binding materials that produce a concrete or (2) by compaction or by natural weight to produce a road base or foundation. Aggregates usually provide about 80 to 100% of the material volume of the construction masses in which they are used. The construction industry utilizes as aggregates about 70% of all crushed stone produced in the United States according to statistics provided by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) , [Table 1], using definitions as shown below. Nonconstruction uses of crushed stone, [Table 2], are included elsewhere in Industrial Minerals and Rocks because such uses require the special physical or chemical characteristics which are discussed in those chapters.

Mineral aggregates are those natural and manufactured industrial mineral and rock materials that provide bulk and strength in port- land cement concrete, bituminous concrete mixes, and plaster or stucco surfaces. They may also provide special characteristics such as thermal and acoustical insulation, weight, surface textures, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. Most aggregates are relatively inexpensive materials, but despite their low unit value, the tonnages consumed each year in the United States and throughout the world make mineral aggregates by far the leading industrial mineral and rock materials both in terms of volume (tonnage) produced and value consumed. The major use of mineral aggregates is in concrete. The low cost, high bulk aggregates tend to keep concrete construction costs at levels competitive with other building materials. Other major uses of aggregates include highway and railroad base or ballast materials, graded fill, and various industrial uses such as metallurgical and chemical fluxes and raw materials-these latter uses are often considered nonaggregate uses of mineral aggre- gate materials. The value of mineral aggregate materials at the production plant varies from less than a dollar per ton to several dollars per ton for most crushed stone and sand and gravel, $2 to $15 per ton for slag and expanded clay or shale aggregate, to as much as $60 to $100 per ton for expanded perlite or vermicu- lite. The more specialized the use, the higher the price-although there are naturally some exceptions to this rule of thumb. The first four parts of "Construction Materials" deal with the utilization of four major mineral aggregate types: Crushed Stone, Light- weight Aggregates, Sand and Gravel, and Slag. While the focus will be on the use of these industrial minerals and rocks there will also be some coverage of sources, mining and production, especially in those cases where they are

The purpose of this chapter is to review the uses of sand and gravel by the construction industry. The specific intention is to give tech¬nical people the general perspective and frame¬work which they need to help in making tech¬nical and business decisions. In the sand and gravel industry such decisions are based on an understanding of sociologic, economic, and technologic factors. In order to discuss the sand and gravel industry intelligently, it is necessary to define sand and gravel. "Sand" as most often used by industry is not sand in an engineering or geo¬logic sense but should be called "natural fine aggregate." The expression "fine aggregate" is preferable to "sand" because fine aggregate in¬cludes grain sizes which, according to engineer¬ing or geologic classifications, are defined as pebble or grit size. Natural fine aggregate is distinguished from manufactured fine aggregate in that the manufactured material is crushed and screened to produce the required sizes and natural fine aggregate is only screened. Coarse aggregate is generally defined as aggregate which will not pass a No. 4 or %o-in. sieve. Coarse aggregate may be natural (gravel) or manufactured (crushed stone, crushed gravel, slag, or coarse lightweight aggregate). Gravel is usually considered sufficiently crushed to qualify as manufactured coarse aggregate when two or more sides are broken. Sand and gravel (crushed or uncrushed) is used in asphaltic and portland cement concretes, is subbase for pavements, as fill where good drainage is needed (such as around structures), and for many other uses. About 96% of all he sand and gravel produced is used in construction.

Iron and steel slag represent man's most successful attempt to date to profitably utilize a solid waste. Its consumption represents a solution to a solid waste problem and also represents tonnage of natural aggregates that will not have to be mined with concomitant disturbance of the land. Slag has been produced as long as iron has been made; but until a little more than 50 years ago, it was mostly a waste product to be disposed of with as little effort and cost as possible. Huge piles of waste slag were generated over the years of iron and steelmaking. Sporadic use was found for small amounts starting with slag (from Catalan forges) used for road bases by the Roman Empire. The first recorded sustained commercial use was, as is often the case in man's history, for making war. Some profit- conscious munitions maker in the 16th century realized that he could make cannon balls of slag instead of the more precious iron. Other small-volume uses gradually developed: cast building blocks, slag-lime mortars and cements, slag wool, ballast, road base, and, finally, in concrete. But it was not until after World War II that the true potential of blast-furnace slag as a construction aggregate was really recognized. Now nearly all blast-furnace slag produced is used, and much of the earlier stock- piles in the U. S. have been reduced or entirely consumed. Steel slag for aggregate use has been in commerce for only the past 10 years, and use has increased rapidly (10-50% per year) during the past 5 years as blast-furnace slag supplies became depleted. However, much remains to be accomplished in determining character and optimum conditions of use for various types of steel slags before such slags will realize their full use potential. Although slag represents only 2% of construction aggregate materials used in the U.S., its production involves certain features that make its production record far more important than national tonnage figures would indicate. Its source is in iron and steel production and concomitantly slag availability is restricted to those areas where iron or steel is produced. In such areas, it often represents one of the principal aggregates marketed and, because of special properties that make slag a selected aggregate for certain uses, the tonnage imbalance may be overcome by the importance of its contribution to quality or special characteristics of end products. The location and number (Fig. 1) of slag plants handling this annual production is governed by the geographic makeup of the iron producing industry. Prior to the period marked by World War 11, most blast furnaces were in the Great Lakes area-Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Gary, Buffalo, Detroit, Youngstown, and Toledo, with exceptions at Baltimore, Bethlehem, and Birmingham. Since that time, iron and steel facilities have been established in Texas, Utah, and California. Today 85 slag plants in 15 states provide employment for almost 2000 persons. The slag plants also recover almost 4 million tons of slag-encrusted iron each year for return to the blast furnaces. Much of the success in developing uses for slag can be attributed to the efforts of the National Slag Association founded in 1918. Since then, it has conducted numerous field and laboratory investigations to demonstrate the properties and uses for slag and slag products. These investigations have resulted in total recognition of blast-furnace slag as a construction material of consequence. During the course of an investigation into the drawability of automobile-body sheet steel, it became apparent that certain advantages would be possessed by a deep-drawing steel with a very low yield strength, but almost normal tensile strength, provided a reduction in yield strength could be accomplished without sacrifice of ductility and fine grain size. It would also be desirable to have this steel free from strainaging; that is, free from the tendency for the yield point to return after it had been eliminated by straining. It was known that wet hydrogen treatment acted to eliminate aging, but as carried out by other investigators, at relatively high temperatures, this treatment resulted in grain coarsening. It has been established by some of the experiments reported in this paper that all of these objectives can be accomplished by treatment in wet hydrogen at a low temperature, in the neighborhood of 720°C. The time of treatment is relatively short (about 3 hr. to completion with 20-gauge sheet) if the water content of the hydrogen atmosphere is made fairly high, say almost 30 per cent by volume. At this temperature, the grain size remains fine in the time required. After this treatment sheet reduced the usual amount by cold-rolling has a grain size of about A.S.T.M. No. 7. The yield point is completely eliminated, and the yield strength is reduced to a very low value, in the neighborhood of 15,000 lb. per sq. in. The stress-strain curve departs gradually from the straight-line elastic part after the fashion of nonferrous deep-drawing alloys. This elimination of the yield point is accompanied by a very low indentation hardness; for example, 32 Rockwell B or even lower. There is no aging as measured by increase in the yield strength upon aging at room temperature or for 3 hr. at 200°C., after stretching about 10 per cent in tension. Tensile strength is only slightly less than the box-annealed sheet, seldom dropping much below 40,000 lb. per sq. in. Elongation is practically unchanged, or increased slightly. The term yield point, as here used, refers to the phenomenon of heterogeneous deformation occurring at a substantially constant load, observed principally in annealed low-carbon steels. If such a steel is loaded in tension, the load increases steadily with elastic strain, suddenly falls, fluctuates slightly about some constant value for a time and then begins to rise again as deformation proceeds. THE mechanism by which the super-saturated solid solution of 20 per cent silver in aluminum decomposes has been reported in two previous publications. 1,2 The analysis of streaks in Laue photograms showed that thin platelike particles (the so-called Guinier-Preston aggregates) form upon {111} matrix planes in the early state of decomposition.1 The size of these particles is larger, the higher the temperature at which they form in accordance with nucleation theory;3 at all temperatures they increase in size with aging.2 When they have grown thick enough to afford three-dimensional diffraction, powder X-ray photograms show that the structure is not that of the equilibrium precipitate y but that of a transition lattice ?'. Since this is also platelike in shape and also lies upon the {111} matrix planes with the {110} direction in the matrix parallel to the {11.0} direction in ?', it seems likely that the original platelet particles are merely ?' in an early stage of formation, and thus finely dispersed. The atomic spacing and pattern on the {00.0} plane in ?' are identical with those on the {111} matrix plane to which it lies parallel, and since comparable directions in the two planes are parallel, the lattices are thus coherent at the interface; an analogous coherence has been found in aluminum-copper alloys.3 The structures ?' and y are both close-packed hexagonal and are oriented alike; they differ only in interatomic distances. Consequently, ? ' is regarded as y strained from its ordinary dimensions by the lattice coherency between it and the matrix.2 The lattice movements that transform the matrix to the equilibrium precipitate appear to be very simple.2 The mechanism of precipitation in this system is simpler and is more precisely known than that in any other system,2,4 hence the system should be a profitable one for the difficult task of correlating property changes with structural alterations. The present report provides additional studies on powder X-ray diffraction from alloys of 10 per cent, 20 per cent and 30 per cent Ag, and presents the correlation of crystallographic changes with changes in microstructure, Brinell hardness and electrical resistivity of the three alloys. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The preparation of the 20.2 per cent Ag alloy has been described.2 Alloys containing 9.9 and 29.7 per cent Ag were prepared from 99.97 per cent Al and 99.99+ per cent Ag using a similar procedure. IT has been known for several years that in certain age-hardenable alloys precipitation of finely divided particles occurs simultaneously with the changes in physical properties; while, in other alloys, these changes take place prior to, or without any, precipitation. . The silver-copper alloys are generally considered to be the classical example of the first group, and the aluminum-copper alloys (duralumin) are typical of the second group. The two types of aging are explained by the precipitation theory and the knot theory respectively. ? It is well recognized now that these theories do not conflict with each other; the one used for a given aging system depends upon which way the alloy in question happens to age-harden. However, previous work on the aluminum-copper alloys1,2 has shown that if the aging temperature is raised sufficiently the hardening will be accompanied by actual precipitation. In fact, it is quite probable that all of the so-called knot-hardening alloys will harden by precipitation at elevated temperatures. Therefore, a combination of the knot and precip-itation theories is necessary to give a complete picture of the age-harden-ing of these alloys, and indicates that knot formation and precipitation are not independent processes. To test the generality of this concept, it is necessary to show that the alloys that commonly harden by precipitation will harden prior to precip¬itation if the aging temperature is sufficiently lowered. For this reason, it would be well to carefully re-examine the aging characteristics of the silver-copper alloys at aging temperatures somewhat below those used by previous investigators. If hardening can be detected prior to precipi¬tation in these alloys, it will lend great weight to the idea that knot forma-

Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. comprises a Gold Division at Joutel, Quebec, and a Silver Division at Cobalt, Ontario. In 1979 the Silver Division milled 41,700 mt (46,000 st) of ore at a recovered grade of 139 g per mt (4.06 oz per st) for a production of 5,816 kg (187,000 oz) of silver. The 100 -year -old mining, camp of Cobalt has long been noted for its high-grade silver ores, and now seems to be on the threshold of being revived with several companies operating in the area. In 1979, the Gold Division milled at the rate of 27,200 mt per month (30,000 st) and processed 333,000 mt (367,000 st) at a grade of 6.58 g per mt (0.192 oz per st) with a mill recovery of 91.670 to produce 2,013 kg (64,700 oz) of gold. The average total cost per ton milled was $22.10 per mt ($20.05 per st) which was $3.66 per g ($1 13.90 per 0s). These figures make Agnico-Eagle one of the lowest cost producers in North America. Gold occurrence in the Joutel ore is fine-grained and contained within sulfide facies composed mainly of pyrite with minor pyrrhotite. Two underground mining methods are employed with long hole stoping accounting for about 75% of the ore mined and shrinkage stoping the remainder. Ore from underground is hoisted into a 545 mt (600 st) coarse ore bin from where it is conveyed to a 45 mt (50 st) surge bin ahead of the 10-51 Hydrocone crusher. Crushed ore is then screened to make a 13 mm (112 in.) product with the oversize being recrushed in a 7-60 Hydrocone. Mill feed is conveyed to two 900 mt (1,000 st) fine ore bins. The Hydrocones were installed as part of a new crushing plant in March of 1980 and have contributed substantially to an increase in mill capacity. Space has been left to install a third crusher in the future. The fine ore bins discharge to a 2.75 m by 3.66 m (9 ft by 12 ft) rod mill, followed by a 3. 7 m by 5.5 m (12 ft by 18 ft) ball mill in closed circuit with a Krebs 380 mm (15 in.) cyclone to produce a 7070 minus 37 micron (400 mesh) .flotation feed. This pulp is first treated in a 34 cu m (1, 200 cu ft) Maxwell flotation cell and then in an additional twelve 2.8 cu m (100 cu ft) cells. Combined flotation concentrates are reground to 9070 minus 37 microns (400 mesh) in a 1.8 m by 4.9 m (6 ft by 16 ft) ball mill in closed circuit with a single Krebs 254 mrn (10 in.) cyclone. Flotation tailings are sent to the tailings dam. Reground concentrates are then aerated with lime to a single Pachuca and thickened in a 16.75 m (55 ft) diameter thickener with the addition of diesel fuel to render any activated graphite inert to adsorption of

The Naval Consulting Board is asking the aid of all the members of the Institute in its effort to help solve the submarine problem. Probably every member of the Institute has some suggestion, and while each one of these may be of only slight value in furnishing the remedy, the aggregate may be of great service. Every member of the Institute will soon receive a pamphlet known as Bulletin No. 1 of the Naval Consulting. Board of the United States in which full information and instructions will be given to all of those who are willing to assist. It is hoped when this information is received the members of the Institute will give it their prompt attention and write as soon as possible to the Secretary of the Naval Consulting Board, 13 Park Row, New York, N. MORE than 2500 members of the AIME from all sections of the U. S., Canada, Central and South America are expected to attend the 175th General Meeting scheduled for Los Angeles Feb. 16 to 21, 1953. The Southern California Section will be host for the meeting. It will be the first time the Annual Meeting has been held in Los Angeles. In keeping with the historic nature of the event, headquarters will be the fabulous Statler Hotel, recently opened in downtown Los Angeles. Meeting plans are under the direction of Henry T. Mudd, General Chairman, assisted by members of the Southern California Section, headed by Basil P. Kantzer. The annual business meeting is scheduled to be held Tuesday, February 17, at the Statler Hotel, at 4 pm. Minerals Beneficiation Div. has planned a very important program, with 10 technical sessions, the famous Scotch Breakfast, divisional luncheon, and participation in the Mining Branch and All-Institute activities. The MBD business meeting is set for the morning of Feb. 16, 1953.

INTERNAL The year 1976 was another outstanding year in the operation of the Institute and in the success of its varied activities. Total AIME membership reached 59,773 for a gain of. 6.4 percent. Total revenue increased to $5,111,2 10, up 22.4 percent, and balance sheet assets increased to $8,479,612, up 12.2 percent from the previous year. AIME and its constituent units conducted 30 technical meetings during the year, and attendance was up at most of them. Publications issued by the Constituent Societies continued a healthy growth. During the year 9 new local Sections were established, and at the end of the year the Institute had 150 Sections, with 19 of them overseas. Details on all of these operations are on pages 2 and 3 of this report.

With proud humility and keen anticipation, I accepted the office of President of the Institute one year ago, and it is with a great deal of pride in you-our membership that I make this report. You are the reason for a productive and prosperous year for AIME. Superior, good or satisfactory results were experienced in 1978 from almost everything we did as a leading engineering technical society. I recognize and pay tribute to the WAAIME organization. Their work is vital to our efforts, and their programs have proven effective. WAAIME can depend upon our continuing support.
