Field investigation of surface subsidence events associated with both active and abandoned underground coal mines in the United States has established criteria that enable the prediction and classification of mine-related subsidence. The key was establishing the role of geology in all types of subsidence and the recognition of beam subsidence in specific geologic settings. The classification is based on overburden thickness, variations in stratigraphy, topography and mine plan. Types of subsidence are Pit, Room, Sag, and Beam. Pit subsidence is associated with three geologic settings: shale overburden, seasonally wet unconsolidated overburden, and perched water table in unconsolidated overburden. Room subsidence occurs where the roof across the width of the room fails to the surface and a shallow depression develops. Sag subsidence develops where the pillars are failing in conjunction with roof failure. Overburden thickness is generally greater than 150 feet. Beam subsidence can occur in all terrains. It is associated with retreat mining and room and pillar mining where pillar crushing or pillar compression has taken place and barriers are left inplace. They occur as beam arch or one-sided beam subsidence. Beam arch failure occurs where mining has taken place on both sides of a coal barrier. One-sided beam failure is associated with retreat mining moving from a barrier towards the entry in hilly topography. This type of subsidence occurs where a hard, thick, rock unit is acting as a bridge supporting the overburden and outcrops on the hill side.

For over sixty years man has struggled to defeat the natural swamp lands known as the Florida Everglades as demand for land to support the burgeoning population growth in the state continued almost unchecked. Over the past ten years there has been a growing awareness that this land development could wipe out a whole ecosystem in a very short time unless steps were taken to reverse the trends. In 1991, a state law called the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Protection Act was enacted giving power to the South Florida Water Management Board to condemn certain lands for conversion to manmade swamp lands, designed to filter polluting run-off water from the agricultural lands around Lake Ockeechobee.

Two lime sinter processes for recovering alumina from clay, the double-leach process and the single-leach process, are evaluated in this Bureau of Mines report. In both processes, clay and limestone are mixed and sintered to form calcium aluminate from which alumina is extracted as sodium aluminate by leaching with a dilute solution of sodium carbonate. The pregnant liquor is desilicated, then carbonated to precipitate alumina trihydrate which is recovered and calcined to a,-alumina. The fixed capital costs for plants producing 1,000 tons per day of alumina are $85 million for the double-leach process and $86 million for the single-leach process based on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index of 240.0. Because plant locations are variable with respect to the proximity of clay and limestone deposits, a nomograph is included to determine operating costs at various delivered costs of clay and limestone. For plants at which the delivered cost of clay containing 30 percent A1203 is $2 per ton and the delivered cost of limestone is $1 per ton, the operating costs are $81.04 and $89.87 per ton of alumina for the double-leach process and single-leach pro-cess, respectively.

The Lake Superior Region has been a producer of iron ore for over 150 years. Early mining operations concentrated on direct shipping ores, which are the result of post-depositional upgrading principally by deep weathering. As direct shipping ore reserves became depleted, the focus changed to the production of iron ore pellets from taconite. The post-depositional processes responsible for upgrading taconite are regional metamorphism, contact metamorphism and hydrothermal processes (Clout and Simonson, 2005). While these processes are important in iron ore genesis they can also contribute to liberation problems and in some instances reduced pellet quality (Han, 2004). Low-grade metamorphic mineral assemblages can negatively impact liberation and pellet quality. Low-grade iron formation may contain a suite of carbonate minerals including ankerite, dolomite, kutnohorite, siderite and magnesiosiderite. Variation in the distribution and composition of siderite and magnesiosiderite makes controlling the MgO content of pellets difficult. Carbonate minerals also require calcination in the pellet induration process, which requires additional heat to be added to the system, slowing down the induration process and reducing throughput. Prediction of carbonate mineralogy and carbonate mineral chemistry is an important goal of ore characterisation for pelletising properties. Contact metamorphism causes changes in mineralogy and grain size (Klein, 1973; Gunderson and Schwartz, 1962). Increasing the grain size of magnetite should improve its liberation characteristics. However, plant grinding targets may not allow the coarse-grained, more easily liberating magnetite ores to increase throughput and can actually result in decreased throughput due to recirculation. While magnetite and martite ores are well understood (Lukey, Johnson and Scott, 2007) late open-space filling microplaty haematite ores are not. These ores, while composed of similar minerals, have a unique genesis that results in fine grain size and complex textures that present liberation challenges and often make interpreting laboratory metallurgical test results more difficult.

THE liability for damages to the surface caused by subsidence is an ever present threat in all underground mining. In ordinary lode mining, this threat rarely materializes into an action, due to the method of mining metalliferous ores, the dip of the veins, and the nature of the ground itself. In the mining of coal, however, this threat is very real. The coal frequently lies close to the surface, in beds underlying large areas of land of which the surface is suitable for agricultural or urban development. Furthermore, the coal is generally mined by the "room and pillar" method and when the pillars of coal are removed, the subjacent support is destroyed. This question of the duty of surface support has now become a very live one in Colorado. What was waste prairie land a few years ago has become valuable agricultural land dotted here and there with growing towns. Frequent references will be made here to Colorado conditions and adjudicated cases, but those conditions and cases and the conclusions to be drawn therefrom are applicable to all coal-mining states. Briefly stated, the question is "Does the owner of the substrata or underlying mineral owe any duty of surface support to the owner of the superjacent strata or surface?" There is -no absolute duty of support owed by the mineral owner and this assertion is made with full knowledge of numerous expressions to the contrary by courts of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and other coal-mining states. Whether or not any duty exists depends upon the circumstances surrounding each case, and since in the nature of things those circumstances are rarely identical, there can be no absolute rule.

The paper defines the various operational advantages associated with the use of cribless tailgates during longwall extraction and considers the associated ground control issues that need evaluating to ensure a successful outcome. Reference is made to longwall mines in Australia currently using cribless tailgates and the geotechnical and ground support factors that allow them to do so This includes the nature and behaviour of the roadway roof the stability of the chain pillar and also the type and timing of installed support A specific case history from a colliery in NSW will he referred to whereby heavy standing support was replaced with lower density tensioned cables as routine TV secondary support, which resulted in both improved TG roof conditions and a significant cost reduction. The conclusion will be drawn that cribless tailgate roadways can potentially he used in many environments either due to the existence of highly competent immediate roof conditions or through the appropriate application of active reinforcing support measures in less competent conditions. Use will he made of Strata Engineering?s roof behaviour and stability model in demonstrating the various concepts involved.

THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE SCALE IN OPTICAL PYROMETRY AT the basis of optical pyrometry lie the theoretical and experimental data of the so-called blackbody. The black body is essentially a theoretical conception, with certain simple properties attributed to it -fundamentally, the property that its radiation at any temperature is a unique function of the temperature and does not involve any other variables. As a theoretical conception, an equation has been developed by Boltzmann connecting the total radiant power with the temperature, and another equation by Planck connecting the distribution of radiant power throughout the spectrum with the temperature. The integral of the latter with respect to wave-length conduces to the former and permits the evaluation of the constant c1 of the Planck equation, ass given in the form. J-= cl?-5 c2 (1) e ? T ? 1 assuming that the constant Q of the Stefan-Boltzmann law E=a(T4-T40) is known. The other constant c2 is arrived at by other methods, which will be discussed later. This equation for the black body lies at the foundation of optical pyrometry. To make the discussion complete, it should be stated that the theoretical black body is quite closely realized by a hollow enclosure with walls at a uniform temperature and radiating through a small orifice. The electrically heated black body, first introduced by Lummer and Kurlbaum, is an essential part of the equipment of a pyrometric research or testing laboratory. Numerous investigations have shown that its radiation conforms to that of the theoretical black body within experimental errors. Hence by operating the electrically heated black body at the melting point of some pure metal for which the temperature of melting has been determined on the vas scale. a standard is obtained for comparison with

THIS paper is chiefly a description of the improvements in dust control chat have been brought about in the assay office grinding room at Wright-Hargreaves. The fume exhaust systems are briefly included because they also are important to the health of the employees. There are three chief factors which determine the efficiency of a dust control system: First, the amount of time and thought spent in designing it. Second, how close! y it is kept up to date with the growth of the plant-a system that is adequate for the number of machines operating when it is installed may fall short of fulfilling its purpose as the plant expands. Third, unless someone is held directly responsible, a system is likely to get out of repair and gradually lose its efficiency-this can easily be detected by regular dust surveys. In designing the present system at Wright-Hargreaves, the object kept in mind was to reduce the dust concentration of all operations to a safe limit, chat is, well under 300 particles per cubic centimecer of air. By doing this, a condition would be attained chat would make it possible to discontinue the use of respirators, which at best are not very comfortable and do not remove all of the hazardous fine-dust particles.

This report describes fluidized bed techniques employed by the Bureau of Mines at Minneapolis to differentially sulfatize the manganese in two samples of low-grade manganiferous ferruginous carbonate slates from the Cuyuna Range district, Minn. Suitable mechanics of operation were established. A space rate of 1.25 to 1.5 fps, a retention time of 3 to 3.5 hours, a temperature of 700° C, and a 10 percent sulfur dioxide gas in air were adequate for sulfatizing the slates by fluidization. Under these conditions the overflow product removal rate from the 4-inch-diameter reactor was 4 to 5 pounds per hour. The sulfur dioxide was used more efficiently in the two-stage treatment than in the single-stage treatment. However, approximately 80 percent of the manganese was converted to sulfate by either treatment.

"In this work, a novel compound 4-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole was first synthesized and its selective adsorption mechanism on the surface of chalcopyrite was comprehensively investigated using UV-vis spectra, zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectrscpy Measurements(XPS), and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and first principle calculations. The experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that AMT would chemisorb onto the chalcopyrite surface by the formation of a five-membered chelate ring. The first principle periodic calculations further indicated that AMT would prefer to adsorb onto Cu rather than Fe due to the more negative adsorption energy of AMT on Cu on the chalcopyrite (001) surface, which was further confirmed by the coordination bonding energies of AMT-Cu and AMT-Fe based on the simplified cluster models at a higher accuracy level (UB3LYP/Def2TZVP). The bench scale results indicated that the selective index improved significantly when using AMT as a potential chalcopyrite depressant in Cu-Mo flotation separation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the most important processes to separate valuable minerals from gangue by taking advantage of differences in the physical chemistry of their surface properties(Laitinen et al., 2014), particularly in their surface hydrophobicity. Hydrophobicity differences between valuable and gangue minerals could be regulated by adding different chemical additives (surfactants)(Kor, Korczyk, Addai-Mensah, Krasowska, & Beattie, 2014), such as collector and depressant. It could be conducted economically to selectively separate and enrich the complicated and/or poor ores, by adopting appropriate surfactants. For example, the beneficiation of molybdenite usually relies on a two-stage process to realize flotation separation of molybdenite from other unwanted sulphide ores(Wie & Fuerstenau, 1974). In the first step, a bulk molybdenite concentrate is produced by utilizing kerosene/ diesel oil and pine oil/alcohols as collector and frother, respectively. Second, sodium hydrosulphide, sodium cyanide, ammonium sulphide, or Nokes reagent are adopted as depressants in the separation stage. However, these depressants are usually toxicant and cannot meet the requirements of environmental protection. A large number of efforts have been taken to develop alternative environmentally-friendly depressants (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; J. H. Chen, Lan, & Liao, 2013; Li et al., 2015; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhai, & Guan, 2017; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhang, Guan, Liu, et al., 2017; Yin et al., 2016). Although some novel and environmental-friendly depressants have been reported to achieve good performance in Cu-Mo flotation separation at a laboratory scale, there are still some challenging problems, including toxicity, high price or poor performance in practice, which severely limit their practical applications in Cu-Mo flotation separation on a commercial scale."

Dunng the last 5 years a United Kingdom colliery has utilised a yielding-pillar configuration to extract a relatively thick coal seam at a depth of 640 m. As part of ongoing research into the siting of roadways adjacent to extracted longwall panels, seved field monitoring sites were established at differing locations to investigate roadway stability and yielding-pillar performance. Characteristic roadway deformation has been identified together with strata softening pathways which indicate the temporal increase in the height of softening into the roadway roof. In the assessment of such a complex problem numerical modelling, using FLAC, has been shown to contribute vital additional information, and provide further insights into the mechanisms controlling strata behaviour.

The lattice parameter of 99.999 pct pure Ag rtlas redetevnzined and found to be az5 = 4.08626 5 0.000041 with the vefnzctiotz correction included); the expatzsion coejjicient between 10° and 65°C was 18.73 X10-6°C-1. The lattice paratneter increased upon solution indium in silver in good agrement with other authors. The solid-solubility limit around room temperature was at 20.4 wt pct of in, which suggests that the high-temperature solubility (at about 689°C) determined by other authors is too low. The expansion coejficient of si1ver increases with the itzcrease of indium content between 10° and 65° C from, 18.73 (In = 0) to 20.9 x 10-6°C-1 (In = 20.4 pct), being only very slightly influenced by small amounts of indium. The expansion coefficents of all solid solutions increarsed strongly with temperature, reaching values > 27 x 10- 6 800°C. ACCORDING to the Ag-In diagram,' the solubility of indium in silver (the a phase) extends to about 18 pct by weight at room temperature. However, there has been only one investigation of the solubility limit by X-ray methods—that of Weibke and Eggers.2 Hume-Rothery, Lewin, and Reynolds measured only the lattice parameters of Ag-In solid solutions3 as did Owen and Roberts4 and Adler and Wagner.' The thermal expansivity of four solid solutions was determined by Owen and Roberts4 in a temperature range between 25" and 300°C. In view of the limited amount of work on Ag-In solid solutions, it seemed appropriate to redeter-mine the lattice parameters and the room-temperature solid-solubility limit, to find the exact expansion coefficients of the solid solutions at about room temperature (between 10° and 60°C) and the expansivity up to 800°C, and finally to derive the thermal-expansion coefficients for any alloy within the solid-solubility region. The spiraling rate in phosphate rock demand during the period 1957 to 1967 led producers to expect a continuation of a high growth rate. Consequently they expanded production capacity to meet the expected demand. Both the domestic and the world demand has shown little growth over the past three years. Florida producers operating at less than 75% of installed mining capacity, produce all that their markets will absorb. We expect that the nest few years will bring only a slight improvement in this condition. An increased demand in the domestic agricultural market will be partially offset by a continuing erosion in the export market.

In 2013, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) produced 251 Mt from 15 mines in Western Australia. Throughout the mines, Ore Reserve models are used for long-term and medium-term mine planning. Grade control data aids the accuracy of short-term planning. Reconciliation of models with grade control data is important for maintaining confidence in predictions from the models, understanding the limitations of the models, and identifying issues that may require further work.There are a large number of sites and models, with more than 200 professionals involved in different parts of the reconciliation process. Regular meetings of all involved and enabling effective communication are important in the reconciliation process.Reconciliation data is gathered and processed through a web-based system; Grade Block Reconciliation System. This system cuts each grade block against the required model, stores the results, and allows users to view and analyse the data. Development of this system has occurred over a number of years and all Rio Tinto Iron Ore mine geologists and resource geologists now use it as standard to report reconciliation results. The results can be viewed in many ways including by different time periods or benches. Graphing the results assists identification of trends. Centralising and standardising reconciliation has allowed easier comparison between sites. Flexibility in the system allows users to customise reports to manage issues unique to their particular site.In parallel with system development, substantial effort has been put into ensuring mining professionals get together to discuss and understand reconciliation issues. To facilitate this there are now regular sessions, including site visits. Issues are assessed on a case-by-case basis and decisions on how best to address the issues are made by the relevant stakeholders. The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant provides unparalleled ability to ensure safety of the workers, public and environment. Although small spatially, it can vary the airflow from 66,000 acfm to 460,000 acfm. It can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based-real-time mine ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

Late Cretaceous Blue Spur Conglomerate preserved as isolated remnants at Gabriels Gully, Weatherstones, Forsyth, Waitahuna Gully and Adams Flat was deposited during the intiation and early stages of extensional movement on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. The deposits represent successive courses of a single fluvial system flowing across the Tuapeka Fault zone from the up-thrown (northeast) block. Each course, beginning with the channel at Gabriels Gully, was abandoned as a result of uplift-induced defeated antecedence in favour of a new course farther to the southeast around the southeast-propagating tip of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Schist and quartz in the conglomerate was derived ultimately from schistose rocks northeast of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Caples Terrane greywacke detritus in the middle and upper beds of the conglomerate was probably recycled from pre-existing sedimentary cover on the up-thrown block, following initiation of uplift on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. Most of the gold is derived from vein sources in Otago Schist rocks to the north, and/or associated placers. Hydrothermal veins at Waipori, Hindon, Barewood, and Macraes are the most likely primary sources. There is no evidence to support previous interpretations of deposition by river systems flowing from the southwest, or axially along the Tuapeka Fault zone from northwest to southeast. High gold grades within Blue Spur Conglomerate should have a linear trend more or less similar to the orientation of the host channels, but are likely to drop off rapidly to the southwest. Extensions of the conglomerate-filled channels are unlikely to be preserved, but there is a strong probability that younger placers recycled from the former channels exist.

Dr. Healy's paper presents a concise state-of-the-art description of mechanistic, thermodynamic models available today for design, interpretation, and trouble-shooting flocculation processes and problems. Coagulation by manipulation of inorganic electrolyte concentrations is controlled largely by adjustment of electrostatic repulsive forces, guided by well understood theory. For simple solids in simple electrolytes, existing models are capable of predicting the influence of potential determining ion and one dominant, non-reacting, symmetrical electrolyte concentration on floc stability quantitatively. Concentration changes required to coagulate and disperse can be estimated. Convenient, easily understood means are available for summarizing the effects of key variables, (e.g., pH, ionic strength) on dispersion stability, and estimating tolerance to unintentional changes (Matijevic coagulation domain diagrams). These models have not been developed to the point that mixed unsymmetrical electrolytes can be easily handled. They are capable of describing two- solid heterocoagulation, but not “n-solid” heterocoagulation. In combination with recently developed computer codes for simultaneous computation of solution equilibria, ion exchange and electrical double layer properties (1,2), these models .should be capable of describing simple clay coagulation systems. This has not been done. Models developed for polymer flocculation are valuable interpretive tools, have some qualitative predictive value, but are less potent in quantitative needs. Most real systems probably involve more than one mechanism of floc stabilization. Little has been done toward developing combined models, even in the simplest systems.
