High methane liberation and mining depth were two major factors which prompted the development of a high- capacity face ventilation system at Jim Walter Re- sources, Inc., No. 4 Mine. No. 4 Mine, one of four deep shaft mines presently under development, is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Birmingham, near Brookwood, Alabama (Figure 1). The coal seams under development are located in the Warrior Coal Field and include both the Blue Creek and Mary Lee Seams, Depth of cover averages 2000 ft. (610 m) with an average total mining height of 8 ft. C2.4 m). [ ] It is generally accepted that the methane content of a particular coal increases as the overburden depth is increased [l] ; experience to date has shown that the gas condition of the No. 4 Mine is no exception to the rule. To further compound the problem, the over- burden depth, coupled with the relatively soft nature of the Blue Creek coal, has resulted in an initial layout based upon 150 x 150 ft (45.7 x 45.7 m) centers. Considering the above-mentioned mining conditions, the means and the effectiveness of the face ventilation system becomes paramount where productivity is concerned.

The production of oil in the Rocky Mountain district, including southeastern New Mexico, increased from 33,048,630 bbl. in 1930 to 34,325,163 bbl. in 1931. This increase was due to production in New Mexico, which exceeded the 1930 figure by approximately 5,000,000 barrels. Total production by fields is given in Table 1. Exploration during 1931 resulted in the discovery of a new oil-producing horizon in the Big Muddy field in Natrona County, Wyoming, and ' the discovery of a new gas pool in the Powder Wash structure, Moffat County, northwestern Colorado. Gas was discovered also in the Frontier sands of the Bunker Hill dome, Carbon County, Wyoming, but no test has yet been made by which to determine the significance of this discovery. All other exploration which resulted in increasing the known reserves of oil and gas in the district was confined to drilling in partly outlined fields where known limits of production were extended. During the year two major gas pipe lines were completed in western Montana, and one in southwestern New Mexico was extended into Arizona. One new project involving the marketing of natural gas from Wyoming fields included the conversion of an existing oil line to a gas line to serve towns in southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska. Colorado The decline of 132,501 bbl. in the production of oil in the Colorado fields during 1931 from the figure of 1930 is due to the natural decline of existing wells, partly offset by the increased production in the Greasewood area. New exploration was limited largely to northeastern Colorado, where attempts were made to find oil in areas adjacent to the Grease-wood field. Powder Wash, Moffat County.—The Ohio Oil Co. is to be credited with the discovery of a gas field in the Power Wash structure in Moffat County, Colorado. The initial well drilled in sec. 5-11-97 encountered a sand at a depth of 2152 ft. which produced 34,188,000 cu. ft. of gas on an open-flow test. The rock pressure was reported as 630 Ib.

In fact, if a mining company is well organized, with the right people in the right management positions, it can be reasonably assured of the adequacy of its operating practices. Management problems in mining are unique, but certain principles of organization are universal. These principles should be used as ground rules in mining as they are in other industries.

The proposed Second Avenue Subway Project in New York City is approximately 8.5 miles long, up to a depth of 120 feet beneath grade and runs the length of the eastern side of the island of Manhattan from Harlem in the north to the financial district in the south. It will reduce overcrowding and delays on the existing parallel line, improving travel for both city and suburban commuters, and upgrading access to mass transit for residents of the East Side of Manhattan. This subway line will have 16 new stations providing transfers to the existing Metro-North commuter rail service and to New York City Transit subway lines and bus services. The first phase of construction includes two TBM rock tunnels 2.4 miles long and two new large and shallow rock cavern stations with clear span openings ranging from 70 to 100 feet and length in excess of 1000 feet with 615 feet center platform, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 20 feet to 40 feet. The design methodology for these large and shallow rock caverns consists of using well known empirical methods for initial estimate of support requirements and then two and three dimensional continuum and discontinuum analyses for verification of the selected excavation sequence and support system. This paper describes the analysis and design methodologies used for the two large and shallow rock caverns with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

The principles of three-dimensional geological modelling are well understood and routinely used. Sample data is collated and geostatistical tools used to ensure that sample data is suitable for its end use, which is typically a block model that is appropriate for mine planning. What has become increasingly apparent is that physical rock properties and geotechnical parameters need to be incorporated into the three-dimensional geological model to create an integrated mine model.The approach to the collection of geotechnical information is not as highly prescribed and controlled as collection of geological data. Commonly, the geotechnical data set is incomplete and inconsistent, with little consideration of what the end use will be by those collecting the data, or how the geotechnical data might relate to the geological data. In some cases, specific geotechnical investigation programs are completed, yet correlation between those programs and previously collected data is rarely undertaken to the same level of diligence as found in the geology field.There are some obstacles that need to be considered when attempting to incorporate geological parameters, such as grade, lithology, and geological domains with geotechnical information such as rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR), rock strength, and geotechnical domains into the same three-dimensional block model. Interpolation or geostatistical estimation methods used for grade estimates might not be appropriate for many components in rock characterisation, particularly search geometries. A number of examples are provided to illustrate issues underlying some of the data collection procedures, and their effects on three-dimensional geotechnical modelling.The example presented attempts to highlight generally observed shortcomings in the collection of geotechnical information, parameters which need to be considered when combining geological and geotechnical data into the same model, and the benefits of having a combined block model from the beginning of a project.CITATION:Zunica, K and Penney, A R, 2014. Elemental sulfur is founded to be the predominant sulfur-containing species in a leaching residue resulting from ferric chloride leaching, under given conditions, of a chalcopyrite concentrate. The mineralogical study of the leaching residue which consists of 52% elemental sulfur reveals that the sulfur formed at the end of leaching process is in the form of discrete crystal rather than coating film. Flotation has been applied to recover the sulfur successfully using xanthate as a collector. Dispersants arc needed to prevent the mechanical entrapment of silicate and quartz by sulfur. Very high recovery of sulfur with satisfactory grades can be achieved with a relatively simple notation scheme.

Gold in many ores occurs in sulphides, which, if the gold is finely disseminated, renders the ore refractory and therefore not amenable to the simple process of milling and cyanidation. Traditional methods of treatment of these refractory ores is to produce a sulphidic flotation concentrate which is roasted to form a porous calcine from which the gold is recovered by cyanidation. The roasting process imposes a constraint of a minimum sulphur grade of the concentrate on the flotation plant, which may lead to a lower gold recovery being achieved in the flotation section. Thermal decomposition of the concentrate by roasting means that the sulphur contained therein has to be treated and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner; and, if arsenopyrite is present in the concentrate the environ- mental aspects will be worsened. It has long been recognized that finer milling of gold-bearing materials improves the liberation of gold, especially when the gold particles are very fine. After extensive laboratory and pilot plant investigations (Liddell, Patents), a suitable mill has been developed for the mining industry by Metprotech, which is capable of producing very fine grinds (down to 90 percent passing one m if necessary). In the course of the investigations it has been found that a large number of gold-bearing materials are amenable to fine milling. A specific advantage that fine milling of sulphidic materials has over oxidative processes such as roasting and bacterial leaching is that the sulphides are not decomposed and there is therefore not a sulphur disposal problem. Furthermore, the milled sulphides can become a future sulphur feed source, and can be reclaimed if necessary. A further feature of the Metprotech process is that it is possible to add cyanide to the mill feed

There?s no denying that mining is a male-dominated industry. Yet thanks to technologies developed over the last 20 years, societal changes in sex role stereotyping, individual determi­nation, and the willingness of companies to train women, there are no jobs in mining today where women are not represented. Women are drillers and electricians as well as drivers of heavy equipment and haulpack trucks. They perform jobs ranging from field exploration and metallurgy to clerical and janitorial and warehousing positions, from prospectors and underground blasters to geologists and land reclamation experts, from communicators to legal experts on mining law and more. The Women?s Mining Coalition, founded in 1994 to shepherd responsible legislative mining reform, estimates that 20 percent of the workers in the mining industry are women. Although women are concentrated in clerical and adminis­trative jobs, at least 10 percent are in non-traditional, hardhat jobs, claims the group. There are women in management, but the numbers in senior management remain small, especially in larger companies.

A very sensitive high-speed two-colour pyrometer was built to measure the temperature of single particles of sulphide mineral, typi- cally 50 pm in diameter, as they burnt while entrained in a hot gas stream. The pyrometer has been used to study the burning of pyrite and chalcopyrite particles and has thrown light on cenosphere formation. Measured maxi- mum temperatures have been compared with values predicted by diffusion-based models. The pyrometer has also been used to study the burning of small captive pellets (2-9 mmm dia- meter) of lead-zinc concentrate.

Reconnaissance studies of beach deposits along approximately 220 miles of the shoreline of Bristol Bay, Alaska, were made to determine if more detailed investigations were warranted. In addition to preliminary mapping of the deposits, samples were obtained from auger borings spaced at 1-mile intervals in key areas; shovel samples were collected to supplement the borings. Most samples were roughly concentrated in the field; magnetic separation tests, petrographic analyses, and determinations for radiometric equivalent uranium, gold, platinum, iron, and titanium were made in the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Juneau, Alaska. Spot samples from some beaches along the shores of the Alaska Peninsula indicate small deposits containing up to 10 percent recoverable titaniferous magnetite; some larger deposits were indicated to contain from 1 to 2 percent total heavy metal, principally as titaniferous magnetite. Significant amounts of other commercial minerals were not detected.

The experiments were carried out by the method of measuring the electromotive force of concentration cells having zinc as a reference electrode, the second electrode being the liquid alloy Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb. The electrolyte consisted of liquid chlorides and had zinc ions. The measurements were made for seventy -five alloys of different mole fractions within the temperature range of 714° to 877°K. The experimental results enabled the calculation of the activity of zinc in tested solutions. The activities of zinc were calculated by means of Krupkowski's formulas.3 In addition, the formulas for coefficients of activity of zinc, tin, cadmium. and lead as the function of composition and temperature were given. Activity of zinc was compared with the values obtained from experimental results, and good agreement has been observed. On this basis it can be stated that the theoretical formulas are suitable for determining the thermodynamic properties of liquid quaternary metal solutions. IN the metallurgical processes being carried out at present multicomponent liquid metal solutions take part. For the thermodynamic analysis of these processes it is necessary to know the thermodynamic properties of these solutions. Therefore, many experimental and theoretical papers deal with this problem. The theoretical papers are generally based on the assumption that the structure of liquid metals is similar to their structure in the solid state. In this manner the model of liquid solution, consequently described by means of statistical thermodynamics, has been accepted. This method is being lately developed, especially for solid solutions. Statistical thermodynamics was applied among others by Guggenheim 1 for describing the thermodynamic properties. Unfortunately, the formulas of statistical thermodynamics are often not suitable for the interpretation of experimental results. Attention should be drawn to the relations obtained by means of formulas of phenomenological thermodynamics which always have constants derived with the aid of experimental methods. In the case of the multi-component solutions which contain some additions of impurities besides the basic metal, wagner2 introduced interaction parameters. Equations for the relationship between the activity coefficients and composition were also given by Krupkowski." he application of these formulas requires a good knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the corresponding binary systems. In these formulas, as in Wagner's, there appear constants which should be determined from ex- perimental data. Nowadays, different experimental methods are applied for evaluating the thermodynamic functions of solutions, for instance: vapor pressure measurements, calorimetric methods, and the measurements of electromotive force of concentration cells. In the present paper this last method for evaluating the thermodynamic properties of four-component systems, Zn-Sn-Cd-Pb, was applied. For instance in the case of Zn-Sn solutions Alabyshev and Landratov, 4 Fiorani and Valenti, 5 and ptak6 performed the investigations. The Zn-Pb system was worked out by Kleppa 7 and Cd-Pb and Cd-Sn by Elliot and chipman.' This method was also applied for determining the activity of zinc in ternary solutions. 1) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental arrangement with detailed description is given in Fig. 1. It consists of resistance furnaces, one serving for melting samples and the other containing the flat-bottomed, measuring quartz tube with the liquid electrolyte. Liquid metals and alloys are in glass supremax tubes, which have an opening in their lower part above the metal level. This opening allows the filling of the tubes by the electrolyte. In these tubes tungsten wires are placed which by means of suitable conductors are connected with a potentiometer. The Schaffer linear kimberlite complex and Aultman kimberlite diatremes comprise a major part of the State Line kimberlite district of Colorado and Wyoming, which encompasses approximately 200 sq mi (500 km2). The district is located along the eastern flank of the northern Front Range and is underlain prin- cipally by Precambrian granites (approx. 1.4 b.y.) which have been intruded into an older (approx. 1.75 b.y.) metamorphic complex. The kimberlite occurrences are Devonian in age and are related to older Precambrian linear structures. The Schaffer kimberlite complex is a dike or fissure system with enlargements or blows developed at the intersections of cross faults; the two Aultman occurrences are diatremes. Kimberlite within the Schaffer complex is predominately grey to green phlogopite-calcite kimberlite breccia and tuffisitic breccia. Carbonate is abundant in some phases. Inclusions of host granite are common and locally abundant. Upper mantle peridotite, pyroxenite, and eclogite and lower crustal granulite xenoliths are present at many localities. Four phases of tuffisitic kimberlite breccia occur in the Aultman diatremes. These breccias are characterized by high carbonate and serpentine contents. Xenoliths of upper crustal granite, lower crustal granulite, and upper mantle assemblages are abundant locally. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rock xenoliths are also abundant in the Aultman diatremes but are absent in kimberlite of the Schaffer complex. From 1979 through September 1982, Cominco American, Inc., conducted geologic mapping, petrographic studies, geophysical surveys, geochemical surveys, and auger drilling in the Schaffer-Aultman project area as part of an extensive evaluation program of kimberlite occurrences. Forty bulk samples (approx. 8,000 metric tons) were excavated from the occurrences and then were processed for diamonds at Cominco American's heavy media separation and diamond recovery test plant at Fort Collins, Colorado. Indicated grades from the Schaffer and Aultman kimberlites range from approximately 0.5-1.0 carat per 100 metric tons and as such, the occurrences do not appear to approach economic viability at this time.

Mechanical sampling from conveyors has historically been a staple in the iron ore industry when information related to chemistry, sizing and moisture is required. In order to comply with ISO 3082:2009, samples can be taken either on a mass or time basis provided no bias is introduced by periodical variation in quality or quantity. With the introduction of mechanical sample carousels, you also have the opportunity to collect samples on a mass or time basis. In order to optimise automatic sample stations in a changing production environment, BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHPBIO) has developed a simulation model that enables the various combinations of mass–mass, mass–time, time–time and time–mass to be investigated.The sample station model can utilise actual (variable) feed rates to achieve high resolution and enables the simulation of sample size variation. Cutter speeds and other settings can then be adjusted to better optimise the performance of the sample station with regards to optimal sample size as well as ensuring the sample station is in compliance with ISO 3082. The model can also assist process engineers in adjusting settings to better optimise the sample station and reduce unwanted events such as blockages. The model can be easily modified to conform to various sample station designs. Aluminum crystals with longitudinal-axis orientations of (111) . (110), and (100) were deforined in tension and annealed. The conditions of deformation were controlled so that the re crystallization nuclei originated in either the heavily deformed regions at saw cuts {artificial nucleation) or in the lightly deformed matrix (spontaneous nucleation). The artificial-nucleatioln experiments showed that in lightly deformed (110) and (100) crystals low-angle twist boundaries are most mobile, while in (111> crystals and heavily deformed (110) and (100) crystals high-angle tilt boundaries with near (111) rotations are favored. The spontaneous-nucleation experiments showed the existence of preferred orientations in the (111) crystals. The nonrandomness of the grain orientations is quantitatively determined through a comparison with the results which would he obtained from a randowl set of grain ovientations. PREVIOUS recrystallization studies have been performed on single crystals deformed in tension.1 7 The crystals used in these studies usually had random tensile-axis orientations and the extent of deformation was not a primary consideration. The present study concerns the recrystallization of single crystals with tensile-axis orientations of (Ill), (110), and (100). The emphasis of this work is on the influence of the tensile-axis orientation and the degree of deformation on both the nucleation and growth processes. The multiple-slip orientations were chosen because secondary slip or slip intersection promotes nucleation.1,5,8 These crystals recrystallize at lower strains than the crystals which are oriented for single slip. Also, the greatest variation in deformation behavior is exhibited by the multiple-slip orientations. The stress-strain curves for crystals with tensile-axis orientations of (111) are higher than the stress-strain curves for poly-crystals, and the stress-strain curves for crystals with tensile-axis orientations of (100) are lower (at large strains) than the stress-strain curves for the crystals which deform initially in single slip.g The recrystallization nuclei originated in either 1) the homogeneously* deformed matrix of the crys- tals or 2) the heavily and inhomogeneously deformed regions at saw cuts. The nuclei will be referred to hereafter as spontaneous and artificial nuclei, respectively. The two terms do not imply a difference in the nature of the nuclei; they imply simply a difference in the mode of introduction of the nuclei. During spontaneous nucleation very few (always less than ten) grains nucleate, while during artificial nucleation large numbers of grains nucleate. Only a fraction of the artificially nucleated grains penetrate very far into the deformed matrix during annealing. The grains that penetrate the farthest into the deformed matrix will be referred to as the dominant grains. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thirty-five crystals used in this investigation were grown from the melt in milled graphite boats at a rate of 1.6 cm per hr. The crystals had dimensions of approximately 6 by 12 by 80 or 6 by 6 by 80 mm and the aluminum was of 99.992 pet purity. The as-grown crystals were annealed at 610°C for 24 hr and furnace-cooled. They were then heavily etched and electropolished in a solution of five parts methanol to one part perchloric acid. The crystal orientations were obtained by back-reflection Laue photographs and were accurate to ±2 deg. The tensile-axis orientations were (loo), (110), and (111). Two of the side faces of the (111) crystals were (110) lanes. The (110) crystals had both {100) and {110) side faces and the (100) crystals had (100) side faces. The crystals were deformed at a strain rate of 0.003 per min. Shear stress and shear strain were obtained by multiplying and dividing the tensile stress and strain, respectively, by the Schmid factor, m. For the (111) crystals m = 0.272 and for the (110) and the (100) crystals m = 0.408. The Schmid factor is effectively constant during deformation for all orientations. The deformed crystals were sawed into 1-in.-long specimens while the crystals were totally enclosed in a graphite boat. The sawing was performed very carefully in order to limit the plastic deformation to the sawed regions. The specimens were electropolished in the solution mentioned above to remove the sawed-end deformation as well as controlled amounts of surface material. A special stainless-steel grip was used to hold the specimens during the electropolishing treatment. The gripping faces were flat, with no teeth, to prevent the introduction of extraneous de-

The principle of personal safety is as old as the human race. The application of this principle to industry is of much more recent origin, and may be said to be almost exclusively the product of the twentieth century. The enormous strides in technique and production mode prior to the turn of the century had been achieved without any real regard for the crippled human by-products of that expansive era. It was accepted that. accidents were inevitable and formed part of the price that must be paid for production. It was not until 1885 that the first Workmen's Compensation Act was passed in Germany making the employer financially liable for injuries suffered on his plant.With awakening social conscience came the first organised efforts to reduce accidents in industry. Early 19th century literature dealing with the development of powerdriven machinery and the growth of industry in Europe contains many references to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that accompanied the change-over from the home workshop to the industrial plant. By the year 1900, there were in Germany - and a little later in England governmental regulations dealing with the guarding of hazardous machinery. American industry, now the acknowledged leader in industrial safety, admits freely that when an organised safety movement commenced in that country, there was already a considerable amount of information available to them from European experience. In west-central England, 183 m (600 ft) below the Cheshire Plain, lie the evaporate remains of an ancient sea. Stratified into nine beds of salt separated by marl bands, the deposit stretches roughly 21 x 12 km (13 x 7.5 miles) and contains reserves of rock salt estimated as high as 400 Gt (440 billion st). The Winsford Salt Works, one of England's largest underground mines, extracts the Cheshire salt and sells it for use as animal feed, for application in de-icing programs, and as a key ingredient in sodium fertilizer production and a variety of other industrial processes. Because road de-icing is an important market, demand for Winsford's salt varies with the severity of British winters. Design capacity is 2.25 Mt/a (2.5 million/year). However, production peaked at 2 Mt (2.2 million st) in 1987. Over the past five years, annual production has averaged 1.6 Mt (1.7 million st). Run-of-mine salt averages 92.5% NaCl, mixed with about 5% marl. The marl was formed by deposition of a reddish dust blown into the Cheshire basin from deserts in what is now central Europe. Association with the marl adds color to the salt, producing tea-colored crystals that resemble unrefined sugar. Adaptation of coal mining systems Rock salt mining in the Winsford district began at least as early as 1682. Mining at the current site dates from 1844 but was shut down from 1892 to 1928. In the early 1900s, a series of catastrophic collapses and floods plagued and ultimately shut down then-active Cheshire brine-salt producers. Subsequently, Winsford reopened and began adapting mechanized underground coal mining systems to rock salt extraction.

In the present study, the phase equilibria of the MnO-SiO2-CrOx system were measured by conducting the following experiments under controlled oxygen partial pressure, Po2, at 1873 K:1) Phase equilibria of the MnO-Cr20 3 binary system were measured for Po2 = 2 x 10-6 ~2 x 102 Pa.2) Phase equilibria of the MnO-SiO2-CrOx ternary system were measured for Po2 = 2 X 10-6 Pa.Based on the results, the phase diagram of this ternary system was established under the condition of the Si-deoxidation process of stainless steel (Po2 = 2 x 10-6 Pa and T = 1873 K).IntroductionAt the deoxidation stage in steelmaking process, generally multiple deoxidizers participate in deoxidation reactions, and the composition of deoxidation products ""non-metallic inclusions"" greatly varies depending on deoxidizing efoments and their contents. In order to control non-metallic inclusions formed by the refining process of steel, it is essential to clarify the equilibrium relations among non-metallic inclusions and molten steel.Especially, during the refining process of stainless steel, nonmetallic inclusions in molten steel seem to- change as follows. After the oxidation refining, Mn-chromite is formed in molten steel as non-metallic inclusion. By the deoxidation with silicon addition (mainly less than 1 mass%), Mn-chromite inclusions are changed their compositions to Mn-silicate. Segawa et al.[l] have reported the effect of amount of silicon addition on composition and mass ratio· of non-metallic inclusions during the Sideoxidation process of 18Cr-8Ni stainless steel at 1873 K, as shown in Figuri; L At higher silicon content than 0.5 mass%, only Mn-silicate was identified as non-metallic inclusion. On the other hand, at lower silicon content, both of Mn-chromite (MnO Cr2O 3) and Mn-silicate were identified. However, the thermodynamic and the kinetic analyses of the above-mentioned Sicdeoxidation process have not been made due to lack in the thermodynamic data for the non-metallic inclusions· of the MnO-SiO2-CrOx system, such as the phase diagrams, the activities of the components, and the free energy of intermediate compounds. In relation to the phase diagram of this system, those of the MnO-SiO2 [2] and the SiO2-Cr2O 3 [3] binary systems have been only reported"

Present practice of lead-zinc flotation at North Broken Hill Limited is described and factors influencing plant objectives and performance discussed. Mineralogical examination of final flot- ation products showed mineral liberation to be 94T complete and size by size metal recovery tables indicated a need for finer grinding to improve lead and silver recovery, but coarser grinding to improve zinc recovery. A steady grinding circuit, at constant ball mill power and cyclone overflow pulp density, is found desirable for satisfactory flotation circuit operation because instabil- ity in the grinding circuit inevitably leads to flotation instability and as a consequence less than optimal flotation operation. Remov- al of the variable lead flotation middling product from the grinding circuit decreased grinding instability.
