Automatic Charging and Stoking Machines for use at ferroalloy furnaces are in operation for more than 20years. Dango & Dienenthal Maschinenbau GmbH (short: DDS) has developed several machine generations. Today advanced solutions help to achieve better charging and stoking results to minimize cost and to improve the working environment around the furnaces. Three different alternatives can be considered: Rail-mounted solution The machine(s) travel(s) on an overhead monorail to one or several furnaces and is locked in the desired working position from where charging and stoking is performed. Mobile solution This machine travels on the charging platform and is also locked at the respective working position to perform charging and stoking. Automation of a standard mobile charging and stoking machine A standard charging and stoking machine can be adapted for automation. A reliable navigation system is included. Charging and stoking is performed with the moving machine. Advantage versus other solutions: considerable lower investment cost and possibility to upgrade the mobile charging and stoking machine for later automation. Overall, automatic charging and stoking can save up to 10 per cent of the specific smelting energy. A better and more consistent furnace operation can be achieved. Different programs are used to cope with different furnace conditions and changing raw materials. All machine movements can be recorded and correlated to other furnace parameters. Working environment on the charging platform is greatly improved.

IT is a well-known fact to all Bessemer steel manufacturers using a blooming mill, that ingots show large cracks in the first few passes of the rolls, which, in the following ones, do not always roll up satisfactorily. This deficiency in the quality of the product is generally called " red-shortness," though, in the writer's opinion, mostly unjustly so. Different explanations for the said peculiarity are given by the leading authorities, each works selecting one element as a special scape-goat for the inferior quality of the ingot. The sulphur is generally first charged as being the principal cause of all mischief in this direction ; then, after ascertaining that sulphur is not higher than the average, and sometimes lower in the very worst heats, silicon has to bear its share of abuse. How and why silicon should affect the working qualities of the metal, the writer could never precisely learn, but is convinced that the doctrine of its pernicious influence is an established one with many. In cases where silicon failed to explain everything, resort was taken to calcium, aluminum, and some other known or unknown elements, without settling the difficulty; and lastly, when the skill of the chemist became exhausted, " practical men " came to the same conclusion, which many leading blast-furnace managers had arrived

(written discussiont).-For electrical measuring instruments, especially those types that involve the Wheat-stone bridge or potentiometer principle and standards of electrical resist-ance, there has been, for a considerable time, a need for better resistance materials. For a satisfactory resistance material, much depends on the purposes for which it is to be used. For potentiometers and Wheatstone bridges, such as are in more or less general use, and the more common forms of resistance standards, a good quality of manganin answers fairly well. However, it should not be presumed that manganin is considered ideal for the purpose, for in measuring instruments and resistance stand-ards, there is still much to be desired. An experience of more than 10 years in the study of the resistance standards and resistance apparatus shows that manganin resistances change with time in a way that is very annoying and the maintenance of the unit of resistance to the desired accuracy requires an excessive amount of work or may be said to be prac-tically impossible. The changes in resistance are generally most rapid and erratic in resistances of very low and very high values. In resist-ances of low value, the resistance material is often in the form of thin sheets so that the surface is large and usually more or less unprotected from the atmosphere, or the oil in. the case of oil-immersed standards. In resistances of high value, the resistance material is in the form of fine wire and, therefore, the surface is large compared with the cross-section. In resistances of medium value, the surface is less, compared with the cross-section, or better protected, usually by a silk wrapping impregnated with shellac. This suggests that one of the difficulties with manganin is slow surface action or oxidation, even when an effort has been made to protect the surface from such action However, the changes observed cannot all be accounted for on this basis. There are, presumably, also some internal changes in the resistance material even when it has been annealed. Further; the changes in manganin resistances seem to be more or less independent of its electrical properties. In other respects, too, manganin is not ideal.

Mines are interesting by reason of what they have done for man, or of what has been done for them by nature. Not all are interesting on both scores. Many profitable mines are commonplace to the geologist; and many presenting unique gcological conditions have been sad failures commercially. The Standard group at Bodie has produced in 25 years, $14,500,000, paying $5,000,000 in dividends.' On the other hand, this output has beeu mined (almost wholly above the 1,000-ft. level) from a system of more than 100 veins, ranging in thickness from 0.5 in. of ('specimen rock" to 30 ft, of clay and quartz; distributed through a zone about 2,000 ft, in width, and representing from three to five distinct periods of formation. This group, therefore, by reason of its industrial record as well as its geological features, may fairly be regarded as doubly interesting. The Bodie district occupies an island of recent (Tertiary) hornblende-andesite, surrounded by a complex of igneous rocks and breccias. The competitive coal market has required coal producers to put more effort into coal quality control. Successful quality control requires a good estimation of the in situ coal quality as well as a good estimation of the probable fluctuation of the in situ coal quality during production. Geostatistics offers a very promising way to meet this requirement. A geostatistical approach toward the coal quality control problem is presented. Two models, the prediction model and the conditional simulation model, have been developed for coal quality data from two large export coal mines in central Queensland, Australia. The mine planning and scheduling aspects based on this and other potential applications of the models are addressed.

This paper presents a review of the state of the art in coal preparation plant instrumentation and a discussion of automation practice that could be applied based on current mineral beneficiation experience and demonstrated foreign technology in coal washing plants. Specific e-mules of applications of remotely controlled slurry values, pneumatic and electronic field transmitters, computers for control and data logging, and on-line analytical instrumentation are given. A program, to demonstrate this technology is described.

This paper deals with the phenomenon of water held in a leach dump due to capillarity. Water is shown to be retained in the fine pores of the ore as well as in the interstices between the rock and soil particles. Upon drainage, Chino leach dump material shows two distinct capillary systems and a double capillary curve is often obtained. Both the igneous and the sedimentary rocks composing the leach material are shown to have appreciable porosity but little permeability. Fluid flow is, therefore, restricted to the interstices between the rock and soil particles. The irreducible water saturation for the aggregate is found to be 884 for the -48 mesh material and 235 for the448 mesh to one inch material. The composite sample of minus one inch dump material had an irreducible water saturation of 52 percent. The irreducible water saturation in the fine pores of the ore was found to be between 73 and 76 percent. Very coarse pores or channels between large rocks exhibit essentially zero capillary retained water. The presence of fine material in a dump can cause high water saturations to be retained and these saturations may be mistaken for perched water tables. Perched water tables can be drained but capillary water will be retained. Capillary pressure data can aid in distinguishing between perched water tables and capillary retained water.

Stoping methods at the Homestake Gold Mine through 1978 had been traditional overhand cut-and-fill, shrinkage or square set. High costs, low-productivity and safety concerns prompted the mine to search for and adopt a "bulk mining" technique as a primary stoping method. Blasthole stoping had been successful but it is very development intensive, and was not suitable for the mine's accelerated mining program. Vertical Crater Retreat stoping was selected, and today accounts for over 50% of ore production. Case histories representing both the successes and failures of VCR stoping in the mine are discussed.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines is investigating longwall panel layouts to maximize coal recovery and minimize interactive problems in multiple-seam operations. When coalbeds are longwall mined in descending order, the transfer of stress from overlying gate roads is a major design constraint affecting pillar stability in the lower mine. The lower mine gate road pillars must be properly designed to withstand the additional load transfer if gate roads are superpositioned in successive seams. The Bureau's MULSIM/NL model, a boundary element computer program, was used to analyze load transfer mechanics for superpositioned gate road pillars. Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), an empirically based design method for longwall gate road pillars, was used to calibrate model input parameters. ALPS provided a basis to verify model trends and to recommend limits for safe pillar design when superpositioning longwall gate roads. The attributes of the MULSIM/NL model and ALPS were combined to develop a modified method for estimating pillar stress for multiple-seam cases. The modified method uses a multiple-seam factor (MS) to estimate the stress on superpositioned lower mine gate road pillars. Numerical analysis shows that MS depends on the interburden thickness and pillar width.

The subject of the constitution of copper-iron mattes has received considerable attention in recent years by Keller,' Belles,2 Hofman,3 and Gibb and Philp.4 Still more recently Friedrich, Röntgen, Wiedmann, Heyn and Bauer, and Leroux have published, in some instances, elaborate researches on the various systems of the sulphides, and the snlphides and their respective metals, which enter into the constitution of mattes, and have added very greatly to the knowledge of the subject. The work of Friedrich has been especially fruitful. But to' date no effort has been made to correlate the data obtained in the latter researches and apply them to the study of the product called " matte," which is made in such large quantities by copper- and lead-smelters. In this paper we propose to determine, by metallographic and chemical means, the constitution of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron mattes in the light of the recent data above mentioned. We do not discuss copper-nickel mattes or speisses (artificial arsenides). The paper is divided into three sections: I. A review and discussion of the various binary systems of the metallic sulphides, and the binary systems of various metals and their respective sulphides entering into the constitution of mattes; also a discussion of the physical properties of these sulphides. II. A description of the results obtained from the chemical and microscopic examinations of the samples of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron matte obtained from various plants.

THE observation of the flow layers, or Lüders' lines, produced in mild steel when it is stressed into the plastic range often provides considerable useful information for the study of the fundamental mechanism of the plastic flow of metals. It is a commonly observed fact that as soon as the upper yield point in a mild-steel tensile-test bar is passed, an unstable condition develops in the equilibrium, the load on the testing machine drops and if the surface of the bar contains a thin mill scale, the latter begins to flake off rapidly along certain "lines." These "lines" are in reality traces of wedge-shaped flow layers and are formed by the intersection of the surface of slip and the surface of the bar. The average plane of the flow layer itself has been found by various experimenters to be inclined at an angle of approximately 45° to the axis of the test bar. In a body of more complicated shape stressed in possibly a different man-ner, the tangent planes to the flow layers at each point seem in many cases to be inclined at an angle of about 45° to the principal stress direc-tions at the point. As examples of the latter may be mentioned the logarithmic spirals obtained when a rivet hole is punched in a thin plate, or when a tube is subjected to internal pressure only, etc. Hence if the flow layers are observed from an experiment, the shear-stress trajectories -the curves indicating the directions of the maximum shearing stresses in the body-may then be approximately determined. Since the latter curves form an orthogonal family inclined at 45° to the principal stress directions, the family of principal stress trajectories, or the curves indicating the directions of the principal stresses, may be thus obtained. Although the discontinuous type of stress-strain curve at the yield point is commonly observed with test bars of mild steel, more recent experiments have shown that this is by no means the only material exhibiting this interesting phenomenon. A similar effect has been observed in zinc and cadmium crystals, by Becker and Orowan;1 in duralumin and other aluminum alloys, by Dawidenkow,2 Elam,3 Fell, and others; in copper and copper-alloy crystals, by Elam;5 in brass by Elam;5 in brass wires by deForest;6 in higher carbon steels, tungsten steel, and

"Artisanal mining is basic mining characterized by manually intensive work methods utilizing primitive or simple equipment and conducted by individuals or small groups exploiting deposits. Artisanal mining in Rwanda and Burundi is further complicated in that the techniques applied are often inadequate, resulting in low productivity and poor recoveries, and workers are paid low wages with owners reluctant to reinvest in the mining operations. A consequence of this vicious circle is often poor working conditions, with miners operating under unsafe and/or unhealthy working conditions. An additional problem is that mining is conducted in a manner that is detrimental to the environment.Artisanal mining is commonly more dangerous than large-scale modern mining operations. Artisanal operations are generally subsistence activities with the miners focusing more on immediate concerns than the long-term consequences of their activities. When miners have no other source of income, they will usually find ways to evade controls and carry on working. Machinery tends to be expensive and often far beyond the reach of most artisanal miners, and therefore there is a general tendency for workers to focus on labour intensive and riskier mining methods.This paper proposes the introduction of small-scale mechanization with labour-intensive manual mining utilizing a bench mining approach in artisanal mines operating in Central Africa. From the 1950s to the 1980s bench mining was successfully conducted in Burundi utilizing manual labour. In order to achieve a balance between job creation and project economics, the combination of manual and mechanized mining is proposed. Manual mining offers the benefit of local job creation while ensuring good mining techniques, such as minimizing mining loses and dilution. Through the introduction of mechanized loading and hauling activities, areas of high stripping ratios can be viably mined, thus increasing the amount of resources that can be exploited. The use of a loader and tractor-trailer arrangement is proposed, thereby improving throughput, productivity, and worker safety and, reducing the impact on the environment."

ALUMINUM alloys containing magnesium and silicon are susceptible to strengthening and hardening by suitable heat-treatments, and they constitute a class of alloys of considerable commercial importance. Generally, they contain these two elements in the proportions required for the formation of the intermetallic compound Mg2Si, or an excess of silicon; no commercial wrought alloys are made with an appreciable excess of magnesium. The reason for not having excess magnesium is obvious from the results given in this paper, since it is shown that excess magnesium results in a proportional decrease in the solubility of Mg2Si. This is the eighteenth1 of a series of papers from the Aluminum Research Laboratories dealing with the equilibrium relations in aluminum-alloy systems; most of the previous publications concerned binary aluminum-alloy systems; this is the fourth of a group pertaining to ternary aluminum-alloy systems. The work on this system was com-pleted in 1930, but the results were not published because of the pressure of other work. Hanson and Gaylor2, in 1921, presented the results of an extensive investigation of the aluminum-magnesium-silicon system. Their results indicated that an excess of magnesium over the amount required to form the compound Mg2Si caused a noticeable decrease in the solid solubility of Mg2Si in aluminum. A more recent investigation3 in these laboratories showed that the solid solubility of Mg2Si in aluminum was 1.85 per cent at 595° C. and decreased to 0.30 per cent at 300° C. The results of the latter investigation were used as the basis for the present work.

"Quench sensitivity of heat-treatable aluminium alloys is closely related to the precipitation process taking place during quenching. Faster cooling results in less precipitation of coarse phases during cooling, leaving more solutes in the solution before ageing. An alloy in such state would be of greater hardening potential as larger amounts of hardening phases may precipitate out during ageing. Hence, to understand the quench sensitivity of an alloy, it is essential to understand its precipitation process. Precipitation is a diffusion-controlled process and the diffusion is made complicated by the so-called quenched-in vacancies. These vacancies form during solution treatment, become “excess” when temperature goes down, and annihilate during the following cooling and ageing treatments, making diffusion now a function of both temperature and time. This paper first investigates the formation and annihilation of quenched-in vacancies and their effect on diffusion. The diffusion affected by quenched-in vacancies is considered in the kinetic models to realise the calculation of TTT/CCT diagrams for aluminium alloys. The calculated CCT diagrams have been used to explain the observed quench sensitivity and age hardening behaviour of various commercial alloys. The transformation from GP zones to other hardening phases during ageing is also discussed.INTRODUCTION The heat treatment of aluminium alloys mainly consists of three stages: a solution treatment at an elevated temperature, quenching from this solution treatment temperature to room temperature, followed by an ageing treatment to allow the precipitation of strengthening phases(Davis, 1993).The following statements generally describes how quench sensitivity is observed in heat-treatable Al-alloys: faster cooling results in,(i) less precipitation of coarse phases formed at high temperature during cooling, (ii) more solutes kept in solution before ageing, and (iii) larger amounts of hardening phases being formed, i.e. a greater hardening potential. Thus, the quench sensitivity of an alloy is closely related to its precipitation kinetics."

The purpose of this study was to provide basic information to aid further research on beryllium mineral flotation. Contact-angle and microflotation (Hallimond tube) methods were used to study collector action and flotation response of beryllium minerals and associated gangue minerals with representative commercial surfactants. Chrysoberyl received prime attention. Results indicated that selective flotation of beryl and chrysoberyl from fluorite and quartz is possible with sodium isooctyl phosphate below pH 2, and fluorite and topaz are readily collected by both anionic and cationic surfactants. Several modifying reagents were studied at one pH and one level of collector concentration. Aluminum sulfate, starch, and sodium silicate proved to be depressants in chrysoberyl flotation.

Steelmakers are increasingly motivated to use iron ore resources with a wider range of grades and mineral types that were previously considered unsuitable or uneconomical for sintering. In this respect, specific issues, which now require further investigation and understanding, include the sintering of ore types with:- overall higher gangue content- elements that cause problems in the steel manufacturing operations- distinctive sintering performance compared with traditional hematite-rich iron ores. Laboratory-based investigations of the sintering performance and the behaviour of gangue impurities during sintering is an important step towards the successful utilisation of these resources in steelmaking.In terms of laboratory-based sintering investigations, there are two generally accepted experimental scales utilised prior to undertaking industrial-scale trials, which include: bench-scale tablet (compact) testing and pilot-scale pot testing. The former has the advantages of flexibility and more precise control of sintering conditions; but it is difficult to simulate the heterogeneity of a sinter bed. The latter, which is carried out in pots with diameters between 150–500 mm, simulate the commercial sintering process and conditions quite well, but is time-consuming and labour-intensive due to operational complexity. It is therefore desirable to establish a smaller scale pot testing facility that avoids the disadvantages of the normal sintering pot but can provide comparable information.To explore the feasibility of small-scale pot testing, a ‘millipot’ facility was established to examine the sintering performance of iron ores and other non-traditional ferrous materials. The millipot has a diameter of 53 mm and height of 400 mm. The facility has the capability to monitor the sintering temperature at a number of locations (axial, radial) within the sinter bed and to adjust the suction (‘windbox’) pressure. The idea of incorporating intelligence into computers to aid decision-makers has been evolving for over two decades. In recent years, significant progress is reported on applications to business and sciences. In engineering functions, the Artificial Intelligence approach that seems to have great potential is the application of Knowledge Based Systems.The primary objective of this paper is to identify domains in mining engineering where application of knowledge based systems could be beneficial. Incorporation of the expertise required during the analysis and interpretation stages of an engineering design problem through knowledge based systems is recognized as an area of significant benefit. To this end, the components of knowledge based systems for mine ventilation and strata control design are described. The potential applications and limitations of knowledge based systems are outlined. IntroductionCorrect decisions are the key to success in any enterprise. Scope of decisions varies with the echelons of management hierarchy. The decisions of top management are strategic, relating to the long-term future of the organization. In a mineral organization, these deal with such issues as the acquisition of a new mineral property or the diversification of the business to exploit additional markets. At the operational level, a manager is concerned with decisions pertaining to day-to- day eventualities related to production activities and other short-term needs. In either case, the prerequisite is the timely availability and use of information. The difficulty involved in decision-making depends on the situational aspect. In. many cases, the decisions to be made under given conditions are fairly straight-forward and standard. This may be due to experience gained from decision-making in similar situations in the past. In fact, many decisions in operations management are either repetitive or routine."

BY surface treatment of coal is meant the application of a material, either solid or liquid, to the surface of pieces of coal. The purposes of surface treatment are varied. They may be to identify or "trade- mark" the coal, to modify the burning characteristics, the coking tendencies, or the behavior of the ash, to prevent the freezing of wet coal, or to control the dust. The control of dust is the usual purpose of surface treatment. TRADE-MARKING COAL The application of color to the surface of coal for the purpose of identification and registration of the trade-mark has been practiced to some extent. In 1928, the Glen Alden Coal Co. began to color its coal and adopted the trade-mark, "Blue Coal." The Old Ben Coal Co. later followed a similar practice with "Green Coal." A commoner means of identification of coal has been the stenciling of designs or pasting labels on large lumps or in the distribution of small cardboard tags through the smaller sizes. The details of the method used to color coal have not been revealed. Usually all of the coal is not treated, because of the expense. Only enough pieces are colored to show clearly when distributed through the coal. The patent literature gives information on some of the methods proposed. Esselen and Weiss have patented the deposition of a coloring material in the valleys of the surface of the coal. Sperr covers the quenching of coke with water containing a pigment or dye that will deposit on the coke. He also suggests electroplating with copper or nickel. Glinsmann subjects the freshly fractured coal surface to the action of an alkali or alkali earth ferricyanide and a ferric salt. Barsky and Hanson specify a method for the application of the same chemicals covered by Glinsmann.
