"1 AbstractThe production of alumina from bauxite using the Bayer process generates 0.7 to 2.0 ton of the residue known as red mud and about 800 kg of CO2 per ton of alumina. The direct use of exhaust gases to react and neutralize the bauxite residue may allow a double gain: open a wide range of new applications for bauxite residue reducing its reactivity and sequester from 3 8 to 107 kg of CO2 per ton of alumina. This paper shows a pilot scale reaction of a suspension of bauxite residue-water with flue gas produced from direct burning oil, similar to the exhaust gases of a refinery. Two different types of reactors are used, a spray tower and a packed column. The inlet and exhaust gases are analyzed using electrochemical cells and non-dispersive infrared sensors. The search of a industrial process that combines the reduction of the CO2 emission and the reduction the pH of the red mud opening the possibility of large scale and economically viable ways is the main objective of this work.The use of the exhaust gases of the refmeries to neutralize the bauxite residue may allow a double gain: Open a large array of new applications for the residue with the reduction of its reactivity and sequester millions of tones ofCO2 plus other gases like SO2 [7] and NOx. This project studies the reaction of the exhaust gases from a boiler burning diesel with RM in different reactor types and conditions in order to obtain parameters to design equipment capable of process this reaction on a larger scale. With these objective compositions of red mud were processed with flue gas at concentration similar to the exhaust gases of the calcination process and boilers of the refmeries."

Alternatives and potential barriers on chemistry and environmental fields were discussed. With the objective of industrial application the potential use of these materials were evaluated through the pH control, mass balance and x-ray diffraction."

This material has no large scale current use and is usually stored. This paper shows that it can be used in a suspension with water as a gas effluent cleaner with high efficiency to remove SO2. It can substitute other materials currently used reducing the overall environmental impact and potentially reducing the cost of gas treatment.2 IntroductionThe production of millions of tons per year of alumina around the world generates from 0.7 to 2.0 ton of the residue known as red mud per ton of alumina. The search of industrial processes that combine the cleaning of gas effluents emission and reuse of these residues can contribute to the reduction of the overall impact of the alumina production process.The main objective of this work is to study the efficiency of the red mud as alternative raw material for the control of emissions of SO2 in combustion gases. Usually this is made through alkaline solutions of CaCO3 or NaOH in absorbing equipments like spray towers or packed column. This project main objective is to study the reaction of the SO2 with a suspension of red mud and water in order to obtain the basic parameters to design equipment capable of process this reaction on a pilot scale. With that goal compositions of red mud on spray were processed with flow of gas containing SO2 with concentration similar to the exhaust gases of the combustion process of the refineries."

For a number of years, Alcoa World Alumina Australia (Alcoa) has been investigating opportunities to produce economically viable products from bauxite residues. Three of these potential products are described here, being Red Sand, ALKALOAM« and REDLIMETM.Red Sand has a nominal particle size of +100 micron and is physically little different to crushed bauxite from which it is derived. In AlcoaÆs Western Australian refineries, Red Sand constitutes up to half of the residue going to impoundment areas. Initial testing indicates that this sand could be processed to provide an acceptable general landfill material, a construction back fill or a material suitable for road base construction. ALKALOAM« is the fine-grained residue often referred to as red mud. A great deal of work has been done to show the benefits of adding this material to sandy soils, which are common in coastal regions of WA. ALKALOAM« has properties that can elevate the pH of the acidic soils and also retain phosphorous, reducing overall fertiliser use and protecting sensitive waterways. REDLIMETM is a by-product of the refining process. This material has a high acid neutralising value. REDLIMETM could be more effective at pH control than most available products because of the fine particle size and sodium carbonate that remains with the product.

In the Ora Banda area of the Eastern Gold- fields, the ultramafic rocks tend to be more deeply lateritized than most of the surrounding rock types, and lateritic nickel concentrations have been formed. Extensive drilling_has shown that, of the two intermixed suites be- neath the laterite - an extrusive peridotite- pyroxenite suite and an intrusive, highly magnetic dunite - the latter weathers to a more nickel enriched laterite. The top horizon I of the laterite consists of ferricrete. Horizon II consists mainly of bands of secondary silica in a clay matrix, formed in the reworking zone around the water table and stranded as the weathering profile migrated downwards. Horizon III ('ºaprolite") is composed of serpentinite, magnesite, iron oxides and silica, and grades dowil to the fresh bock composed variously of olivine, ser- pentine, talc, amphibole-chlorite and iron oxides. The main locus of nickel deposition is the zone containing the bottom of horizon II and the top of horizon III. The water table is also at this general level. .

Aluminum is the most abundant metallic element of the earth's crust and is a constituent of nearly every type of rock (Clark, 1924, p. 13). The sources of aluminum and aluminous material most commonly used by modern industry are the bauxitic raw materials consisting of bauxite, bauxitic clay, and aluminous laterites. These are mixtures of hydrated aluminum oxide minerals and mineral impurities. End Uses Bauxite is used as an aluminum ore and in the manufacture of refractory products, aluminous chemicals, and abrasives. Other raw materials are used for aluminum ores, but their use is minor compared to bauxite. Refractory products made from bauxite are synthetic mullite, high-alumina fire bricks, castables, monoliths, cements, and ramming mixes used by the iron, steel, and cement industries. Chemicals made from bauxite are aluminum sulfate and sodium aluminate for water treatment and aluminum chloride used in refining crude petroleum. Among the abrasive products made from bauxite are coated abrasives, sharpening stones, and grinding wheels. Special grades of bauxite are used in the decolorization and clarification of raw sugar and lubricating oils. Bauxite has been used for road surfacing but mainly because other material was not more readily available. Perhaps the oldest use of bauxite and aluminous laterite is for a building stone. Ancient temples and more recent structures in India have been made from these and some varieties are suitable for decorative stone. Geology Mineralogy and Properties – Bauxite is a mineral raw material composed principally of one or more hydrated aluminum oxide minerals and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania and elements in minor or trace amounts. The hydrated aluminum oxide minerals are gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore. Corundum is not included as a bauxite mineral although it does occur in some bauxite deposits. Boehmite and diaspore are both alumina mono-hydrates and have essentially the same composition, but diaspore has a greater hardness and a higher specific gravity because of a more tightly bonded and compacted atomic structure. Gibbsite is an alumina trihydrate mineral. Properties of bauxite minerals are shown in [Table 1].

Because of its chemical activity it does not occur in nature in a metallic form but principally in the silicates, feldspar, mica, shale, and clay. Bauxitic raw materials-bauxitic clay, aluminous laterite, and bauxite-develop from these aluminum silicate sources. Bauxite and aluminous laterite are naturally occurring mixtures of aluminum hydroxides and mineral impurities, and they are the major sources of aluminum. End Uses Bauxite is the basic ore of the aluminum industry. It is refined into aluminum hydroxide and calcined for feed stock to electrolytic smelters. Over 90% of the tonnage mined is refined and smelted into aluminum. The total tonnage consumed by other industries is small in comparison, but bauxite and alumina are important for the manufacture of refractories, ceramics, chemicals, abrasives, pharmaceuticals, catalysts, cements, dessicants, and flame retardants. Some aluminum-containing industrial products are made from clays and other materials but the majority originate from bauxite directly or from aluminum hydroxide and alumina refined from bauxite. Lateritic type bauxite is also used as building and decorative stone. Geology Mineralogy and Properties Bauxite is a mineral raw material composed principally of one or more aluminum hydroxide minerals and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other elements in minor or trace amounts. The important aluminum hydroxide minerals are gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore. Bayerite, nordstrandite, and tucanite are naturally occurring aluminum hydroxides but are rare and not commercially important. Mixtures of gibbsite and boehmite are common, boehmite and diaspore less common, and gibbsite and diaspore rare. Gibbsite is aluminum trihydroxide. Boehmite and diaspore are aluminum oxide hydroxides and have essentially the same composition, but diaspore has a greater hardness and a more tightly bonded and denser atomic structure. Although not technically correct, the commercial terms trihydrate and monohydrate are frequently used to distinguish types of bauxite. If bauxite is all or nearly all gibbsite, it is referred to as a trihydrate ore; if boehmite or diaspore or a mixture of both are the dominant minerals, the bauxite is called a monohydrate ore. If substantial amounts of both gibbsite and boehmite are present, the bauxite is frequently referred to as a mixed ore. Properties of major bauxite minerals are shown in Table 1. Silica, iron oxides, and titania are major impurities always present in deposits of bauxitic raw materials.. Silica impurities usually occur as clay minerals, micaceous minerals, or quartz, but cristobalite and feldspar are found in some deposits. The most common clay minerals are kaolins; however, illites and chlorites are often found in small quantities. Varying proportions of aluminum, iron, and clay minerals make bauxite, aluminous laterite, ferruginous laterite, and bauxitic clay deposits gradational with each other. Hematite and goethite are the common iron mineral impurities in many bauxites. Magnetite and ilmenite occur in deposits derived from basic igneous rocks. Other iron minerals associated with bauxite are maghemite, pyrite, siderite, and marcasite. The titanium minerals found in bauxites are anatase, leucoxene, rutile, ilmenite, titaniferous

During World War II the Pocos de Caldas bauxite deposits of Minas Gerais in Brazil yielded some 60,000 tons. Since then they have maintained a small but almost continuous production. Known for many years, the deposits have been reconnoitered by a number of geologists,1-4 but no dimensional study has been possible because there have not been enough exposures to show clearly the depth, bedrock, and habit of occurrence. The deposits are somewhat unorthodox in their occurrence mainly on steep slopes of mountainous terrain. Although the parent rocks are a sequence of alkalic intrusions that bauxitize readily under the proper conditions, bauxitization has not been the dominant weathering process in the area. It is limited to certain localities where important volumes of bauxite have formed by laterization of several rock types, each yielding a distinctive type of bauxite. Bauxitization may be observed in several stages and in both direct and indirect cycles of formation. The deposits are unique in being of demonstrably recent age, so that the conditions under which the bauxite formed are essentially those of the present time. The bauxitization sequence is postulated in Fig. 1.

Nassau County, New York, is undertaking several projects to improve the water quality in the Western Bays of Long Island. A major step forward will be the completion of the Bay Park Conveyance Project, which will divert most treated effluent away from the Western Bays to an existing ocean outfall at the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. The ongoing works include 3.6 miles of microtunneling, 7 miles of sliplining, 14 shafts, and a 75 MGD pump station. This paper provides an overview of the design and an update on construction progress through December 2022. The project is a collaborative effort between Nassau County, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the design-builder, and various consultants.

The primary water supply system for the City of San Francisco and adjacent peninsula areas consists of aging and deteriorated pipelines crossing under the San Francisco Bay (the Bay). This system is highly vulnerable to seismic damage from the nearby San Andreas and Hayward fault zones. The Bay Tunnel Project will replace the existing system with a 8-km-long (5-mi-long) tunnel underneath the Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using earth pressure balance methods and will have a two-pass lining system of precast concrete bolted, gasketed segments for initial support, and a welded steel pipe final lining. The project challenges include tunneling through both soft ground and rock conditions without any intermediate shaft access over the entire alignment. Seismic performance criteria include maintaining service flows after a large earthquake.

An algorithm is proposed for updating the probability of slope failure on the basis of sequential testing using Bayesian probability theory. The approach is novel and computationally straightforward since, unlike other methods, updating of the probability of failure is carried out directly. This is because the probability is treated as a random variable whereas other methods have considered it as a purely deterministic value or as a function of shear strength parameters that are updated individually. The prior information required for the Bayesian analysis is obtained by a conventional probabilistic analysis. An exponential distribution is then used for the probability of failure, applying the principle of maximum entropy. This distribution is continually updated for individual slope cells, where repetitive excavation creates several such cells and a corresponding series of Bayesian estimates of the probability of failure is obtained. The approach is applicable to most simulations but there are limitations on its use. A more mathematically rigorous refinement using the beta distribution is currently under development

Heavy rainfall and typhoon oftentimes cause the collapse of hillslopes across mountain roads. Disastrous consequences of slope collapses necessitate the approach for predicting their occurrences. In practice, slope collapse prediction can be formulated as a deterministic classification problem with two class labels, namely ?collapse? and ?non-collapse?. Nevertheless, due to the criticality and the uncertainty of the problem, evaluating the collapse susceptibility of an area is a challenging task. This study proposes a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) approach, named as K-Nearest Neighbor Based Bayesian Classifier (KNNBC), to deal with slope collapse assessment. In the proposed model, Bayesian inference is used as a framework to achieve probabilistic prediction of slope collapse. Meanwhile, K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) is employed as a density estimation technique. Equipped with probabilistic outputs, the K-NNBC is able to yield predictions with different levels of confidence and diminish misclassified cases. Experimental results point out that the proposed model is very helpful for decision-makers in slope collapse assessment and disaster prevention planning.

"Refratechnik, a leading German refractory company, acquired a majority shareholding in Baymag in 1979. This acquisition included the mining rights for a magnesite deposit of exceptionally high purity in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.The deposit, situated in the Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, is of Cambrian age and has ore reserves of 50 million m. t. of magnesite. The Baymag magnesite deposit is one of the purest in the world. The deposit was opened up and mining commenced in early 1982. Production of various caustic calcined magnesia products in a rotary kiln operation in Exshaw, Alberta, was started in mid-1982. The product application ranges from pulp and paper production, to the chemical industry, and to animal feed supplements. Since the end of 1983, Baymag has produced high-quality refractory grade fused magnesium oxide f or specialty applications in the steel industry.IntroductionAlthough magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth and forms about 2.06% of the earth's crust, common knowledge about magnesium and especially magnesium oxide (MgO) as an industrial mineral is not widespread. The reason might be that, with the exception of magnesium metal as the element, magnesia products are not generally sold as final products to end-users, but rather are needed for the production of final products such as steel, cement, paper, etc. Therefore, some general comments are given about the different sources of MgO, the different products, world production and consumption , before Baymag specifics are addressed. Magnesium metal will not be discussed in this paper."

Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

It?s school vacation time again, and kid?s thoughts turn from textbooks and term papers to fun and play, includ­ing outdoor adventures. Old quarries can become swimming holes on hot summer days; sand and gravel piles look like interesting playgrounds; aban­doned mine shafts beckon explorers. But, for the unaware, all three mean danger. Already this year we have seen two stark reminders that mines and minors don?t mix. In Oklahoma, a 13-year-old girl drowned while swimming with friends in an inactive strip mine. In Maryland, a six-year-old boy playing on a quarry site, plunged more than 100 feet to the bottom of the quarry. Playing at such sites may seem like harmless fun, but every year dozens of children and adults are seriously hurt or fatally injured while playing on active and abandoned mine property. These accidents sometimes happen in traditional mining areas like the coal fields of Appalachia and the remote areas of the west. But the threat is anywhere there are active or abandoned quarries, sand and gravel pits, underground mines, or other mining operations.

Historically mining engineers haven't spent enough time planning waste dumps, but waste movement costs often outweigh ore haulage costs. There is a real incentive to plan waste dumps right the first time to minimise rehandle and final closure costs. At BHP Billiton Iron Ore there has been an increasing sophistication in waste dump design and they are becoming as important as the pit design. Closure landforms are now included in mining studies. Closure is embedded in the business planning cycle. The results from the recent life of mine study at Whaleback is a case in point where a base case of the shortest hauls with no closure constraints was compared against a closure case. A properly planned and executed waste plan revealed that no rehandle was required and haulage costs were eight per cent less if closure design implementation was carried out concurrent with mining. At cessation of mining the landforms were such that decommissioning of critical acid rock drainage dams and coverage of exposed pyrite areas could occur straight away, without the need for additional rehandle.  The paper also covers design and scheduling elements of waste design both in-pit and ex-pit, management of potentially acid forming material (PAF) and trends in PAF management and designing for final landform closure. This paper illustrates that there is value in terms of costs savings, sustainable outcomes and reputation if the mine planners are involved in the closure planning process.

Blasting complaints are as unpredictable as human nature. Being prepared to speak to the complainant, and having a good idea of what you should say, or what NOT to say, may affect the evolution, and eventual resolution of the complaint. The person taking that first phone call will probably not be responsible for resolving the complaint. However, the person in charge should respond to the complainant ASAP, the same day, if possible.
