The construction of a new breaker at the Cranberry Colliery, Hazleton, Pa., was forced upon the operators, A. Pnrdee & Co., by a fire which destroyed the entire plant early in January, 1896. The loss included, in addition to the breaker, three boilerhouses and three engine-houses. The boilers were not injured, but the steam-pipes and connections were all broken and warped by the fire. The boilers were probably saved from injury by the presence of mind of the fireman., who started all his feed-pumps and filled the boilers with water. The hoisting-engines were more or less warped and cracked, but by patching and replacing the injured and broken parts, they were made to do satisfactory service in the new plant. It may be worthy of mention that the wrought-iron shaft of one of the hoisting-drums, 12 inches in diameter by 17 feet long, was so heated in the fire that the weight of the drum caused it

The experiments described in this paper were undertaken primarily for the purpose of measuring the quality of work done in screening and sorting in American concentrating-mills for Prof. Richards' work on Ore-Dressiag. For this purpose a series of samples of screened and sorted products was obtained from four different mills, and a plan was devised for sizing these products, and for tabular and graphic representation of the results. The results, together with discussions as to their significance, so far as they serve to interpret the quality of mill-work, have already been published in the above-mentioned work, and it is not the purpose of this paper to duplicate the work, except so far as is necessary to explain and illustrate methods and appliances. The sizing of coarse products was clone by sifting on screens of sheet-metal with round punched holes. These holes ranged in size from 64 mm. to 0.5 mm. in diameter. Below the smaller limit, punched metal, suitable for this work, was not obtainable, and the sizing was carried on by sifting on woven wire-sieves. The finest woven wire-cloth obtainable gave a hole 0.073 mm. square, and the finest silk bolting-cloth pave a pentagonal hole with an average diameter of 0.069 mm. Even these very fine screens served no useful purpose in sifting certain of the very fine classifier-products, of which all, or nearly all, passed through the finest screen. A new adaptation of a method of settling and decantation with water in beakers was therefore worked out, and by this means the sizing mas carried down to grains of a diameter as small as 0.012 mm. About eight years ago a comprehensive study of American timbers was begun in the U. S. Division of Forestry with a twofold object. On the one hand, it was desired to deternliiie the working-qualities of our numerous economically important timbers, and to furnish reliable standards of strength. 011 the other hand, it was intended to get a clearer insight into the properties and behavior of wood in general, with a view of establishing more rational methods in its use, and to furnish data for physical inspectioil which would permit an intelligent application of the standards of strength, and place upon a rational foundation the so-called " factor of safety," which is at present a mere baseless guess. The first object, namely, the establishment of standards for any given species, requires a very large series of tests, since Wood is an exceedingly variable substance, so much so that in the same tree a variation of 50 per cent. in strength may be found; hence the greater need of rational data of inspection. So far, the insufficient appropriations and facilities at our disposal have permitted us to establish really reliable standards for five species of southern conifers only. These have been deduced from nearly 20,000 tests. Besides these, 10,000 other tests have furnished indicatious regarding some two dozen other species. This work is now entirely abandoned, waiting for more prosperous times. The study of wood in general, however, can be carried on with smaller means, and has this year yielded not only very interesting, but highly important results, which will soon be published in detail. The desirability of bringing about greater uniformity in specifications governing iron and steel is generally recognized, and has found expression within recent years, in the efforts of numerous technical societies in that direction. When the International Association for Testing Materials was organized at Zurich in 1895, a committee was appointed, charged as follows: " On the basis of existing specifications, to seek methods and means for the introduction of international specifications for testing and inspecting iron and steel of all kinds." The American representation on this international committee consisted originally of five, and now of eight members. In view of the magnitude and importance of the subject, the Executive Committee of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, since incorporated as the American Society for Testing Materials, appointed a committee of 34 members, including the American members of the above-named international committee, to frame standard American specifications for iron and steel. This committee reported on specifications for (1) Structural Steel for ridges and Ships; (2) Structural Steel for Buildings; (3) Open-Hearth Boiler-Plate and Rivet-Steel; (4) Steel Rails; (5) Steel Splice-Bars; (6) Steel Axles; (7) Steel Tires; (8) Steel Forgings; (9) Steel Castings ; (10) Wrought-Iron. These specifications were designed to be fairly representa-tive of the best current American practice, and were adopted by letter-ballot of the Society in August, 1901. The leading engineering societies have participated at various times in the discussion of these specifications and have lent valuable assistance through the appointment of special committees on like, or closely related, subjects. In another place,* the writer has called attention to the modern methods of the laboratory investigation of clay, and it is desired here simply to discuss one branch of the subject, which, though of considerable importance, has heretofore received little attention in this country, viz., the rational analysis of clay. In order, however, the better to point out the bearings and advantages of this procedure, it is necessary to refer briefly to the ultimate analysis as well. The remarks in this paper refer only to the use of clay for the manufacture of clay-products. Pure clay or kaolin-f is extremely refractory, possesses little plasticity, and usually shrinks aud warps considerably in burning. Even the smallest proportion of impurities changes these properties, so that the kaolin exhibits variations in shrinkage, plasticity, tensile strength, fusibility, and often color when burned. The majority of nearly pure kaolins consist of kaolinite (A1,O2 2SiO,, 2H20), undecomposed feldspar, and quartz. The kaolinite generally forms the finest particles of the clay and is known as the clay-substance, while the rest of the clay-particles are collectively spoken of as sand. In the ordinary or ultimate analysis, the substances generally determined are silica, alumina, ferric oxide, lime, magnesia, alkalies and water. An analysis of this type simply regards the clay as a mixture of elements or oxides, but gives no clue as to the actual condition in which these substances exist, i.e., whether as silicates, oxides or carbonates, etc., a point which it is of the highest importance to know; for the individual components of the clay influence its properties not only according

Mesabi ores differ from all other soft hematite-ores of the Lake Superior region in having but little or 110 binder. When exposed to heat, instead of baking into lumpy masses as do the Gogebic, Menominee or Marquette fine ores, they are changed to a sandy powder; and the finer particles, having little or no tendency to adhere together in the furnace, are carried by the ascending gas-currents into the down-comers and gas-mains forming flue-dust of a fine gritty nature. The term " finer particles " is used in this paper to mean ore fine enough to pass through a sieve with 80 meshes to the linear inch. Ore coarser than this is not likely to be carried over except in case of a slip, or an explosion in the furnace. The higher the percentage of fine particles in an ore from this range, therefore, the greater the amount of dust likely to result from its use. This statement, however, does not hold good in case of fine ores from the other ranges, and ores from the older ranges, carrying as high as 20 per cent. of material fine enough to pass through a 100-mesh sieve, have been in successful use for years, and have left no records of their causing trouble in furnace-practice by dust, slips, or explosions, so common since the introduction of Mesabi ores. Mesabi ores containing less than 12 per cent. of material which will pass through an 80-mesh sieve are considered of good structure; from 12 to 18 per cent., fair structure; and more than 18 per cent., poor structure. In a recent paper' I took exception to the opening paragraph of Mr. Hill's paper, in which he says:— " In endeavoring to interpret the geological occurrence of oil, the geologist is confronted by the fact that science has not yet solved the problem of its origin, which lies at the root of the subject.... For the present we must consider oil as a material in the rocks, the origin of which is still unexplained." I take this occasion to repeat my objection to the above statement, as well as to the similar statement of Mr. C. W. Hayes and William Kennedy in their recent bulletin2 on the same oilfields :—" The origin of petroleum is one of the most obscure problems by which geologists are confronted." I do not hesitate to say that these statements, which claim we know so little to-day of the origin of petroleum, are not warranted in the present state of geological science, and that, on the contrary, geology can to-day most clearly prove the origin of oil to be inorganic and the result of solfataric volcanic emanations. It has been so long assumed that oil or bitumen is due to the decomposition of the organic remains of the sedimentary rocks, that the words organic and bituminous are used synonymously and, accordingly, without attempt at explanation, the origin of oil is in every case ascribed to some bituminous-shale horizon, more or less full of organic matter. THE DEFINITION of the continental margin, as considered in this paper, is in the broad sense: " ... those provinces of the continents and of the oceans which are associated with the boundary between these two first-order features of the earth" (Heezen et aL, 1959, p. 17). The provinces in the area under con-sideration are: the Continental Shelf, the Continental Slope and the Continental Rise. The Continental Shelf extends from the shoreline to the shelf break, which lies at approximately the 200-meter isobath through-out the region (except north of the Grand Banks, where the break may be defined more properly by the 400-meter isobath). The Continental Slope and Rise occur between the shelf break and the 4,000-meter isobath. (The last figure was somewhat arbitrarily selected for the purpose of this paper.) The Atlantic Continental Margin as thus defined extends along the eastern coast of Canada from the International Boundary in the Gulf of Maine northward to approximately the 60°N latitude off the coast of Labrador. The area of study amounts to at }east 500,000 square miles -an area roughly equivalent to 13 per cent of Canada's total land surface.

"Atlantic Copper is one of the largest copper producers in Europe. Its production facilities, including a primary copper smelter and an electrolytic refinery, are located in Huelva, on the southwest coast of Spain. These installations enable the smelting of over 1 million tpy concentrates to produce up to 260,000 tons per year of cathodes and 900 ktpy of sulphuric acid.Since 1970, several improvements have been made at the Converters Area such as modifications of primary hoods, operations with an OPC system, installation of scrap chargers, the recent installation of the secondary hoods and other environmental projects. All these modifications have been aimed at increasing the capacity of our smelter while keeping our continuous environmental commitment.This paper describes the modifications and improvements carried out at the converters area and our proposals for future developments."

Atlantic Wharf involved the construction of a six-level underground parking garage and a 32-story high rise tower along the historic Boston Harbor waterfront. The site, historically known as ?Russia Wharf,? consisted of filled land initially created in the late 1800s by extending the shoreline toward the harbor as the urban population and land needs grew to support expansion of commerce and trade. Redevelopment required solutions to address relics of waterfront structures (granite block seawalls, piles, and piers), weak subsurface soil conditions, tidal groundwater levels, and contaminated soils resulting from previous site usage and filling. The foundation system, consisting of drilled shafts with column loads up to 14,000 kips (62,272 kN), concrete diaphragm wall (slurry wall), and up-down construction methodology, was chosen to address these factors. As a prerequisite for development, selected portions of the façades of the former historic buildings were required to be preserved, protected, and incorporated into the final building configuration. The historic façades were temporarily braced and supported prior to the demolition of the buildings and commencement of below-grade construction. This paper will describe the considerations in the selection of up-down construction methodology along with a discussion of the design and performance of the concrete diaphragm wall and drilled shaft foundations. Up-down construction methodology shortened the overall construction schedule while addressing the lateral bracing requirements for the concrete diaphragm wall and restrictive ground movement tolerances to protect adjacent structures. Below-grade construction was completed in March 2010, and the building was opened for tenant occupancy in January 2011.

In mid-1998 Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB introduced the first member of a new family of drill rigs. This new family, Rocket Boomer L1C/L2C/L3C, is based on modern computer technology and also on what is characterised as information technology. The design of the drill rigs are modularised both in hardware as in the software. This means that the functionality of the drill rigs is upgradable step by step. Added upon the basic drill rig functions are the new options as ABC Regular (known also as Contour Control), ABC Total, drillplan generator and communication products. The main objectives of these functions are to facilitate real quality drilling.

New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNIIzarubezhgeologia, VNIIoceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of theRussian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deepsea drilling (leg 1-130),  thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.

The leaching behaviour of nickel?copper matte in an acidic?copper sulphate solution during the repulping stage at Impala Platinum Refineries has been studied. The base metal recovery process consists of a matte repulping stage prior to a series of pressure leach stages. Therefore, the repulping stage is basically an atmospheric leach stage in which the matte containing mostly Niand Cu is leached in copper-spent electrolyte from the tank house, resulting in dissolution of nickel and precipitation of almost all the copper. To understand the nature of the leaching process during this stage of the operation, the effects of temperature stirring rate and matte particle size on the rate and extent of base metal dissolution and copper rejection from the solution have been investigated. The leaching mechanism of the matte in the investigated system is alsoproposed.

Barneys Canyon Mine is a 1.8 million t.p.y. gold heap leach operation near Salt Lake City, Utah. The gold recovery plant has been operating since September of 1989. Carbon elution is done at atmospheric pressure with a high temperature caustic solution. No cyanide is used in the process. Operating experience is discussed.

In recent years, much work has been done to explain the nature of the gold-carbon adsorption mechanism. The benefits of a sound theoretical basis has the obvious application to gold adsorption and elution industrial processes. Unfortunately, the lack of a clear agreement on the mechanism has provided no clear direction towards process innovation and optimization. Jones' (1989) work has gone a long way towards clarifying the specie of gold adsorbed (and thus the chemistry required to remove it). Since the development of hot caustic and cyanide elution, the kinetics have been accelerated by the application of pressure to increase elution temperatures beyond the boiling point at atmospheric pressure. However, the traditional reagent content of 15 g/L NaOH and 5-10g/L NaCN has remained largely unchanged. This is in spite of work that has shown that the presence of cyanide is not required for the elution process to take place (Adams, 1986; Adams; 1989; Jones, 1989). Adams (1989) has also compared NaOH elution rates with and without cyanide. He found improvement with the use of cyanide and a synergistic effect with the use of both. Chesbar Resources Inc.1 is developing a nickel-cobalt laterite project in Guatemala, Central America, by applying existing atmospheric chloride technology to a known resource. The tropical laterite project has an inferred resource of 133 million tonnes grading 1.51% nickel, which represents ~20% of Chesbar?s land holdings in Guatemala. Within its boundaries, the Sechol area has a measured resource of 14 million tonnes grading 1.46 % nickel and 0.08% cobalt, and an indicated resource of 23 million tonnes grading 1.34% nickel and 0.08% cobalt. Notwithstanding the impressive overall resource, the company has taken an innovative approach to a laterite project and is concentrating on El Inicio, a high-grade starter pit with five million tonnes grading 2.1% nickel and 0.08 % cobalt. The process flowsheet is based on atmospheric chloride leaching in a slightly acidic magnesium chloride brine, solution purification by recycled magnesia, precipitation of a mixed nickel/cobalt hydroxide intermediate product, and lixiviant regeneration by modified pyrohydrolysis technology. Initial results suggest that >90% of the contained nickel and cobalt in the non-magnetic fraction of the feed can be recovered, with <5% of the iron leaching. A metallurgical scoping study has established preliminary capital and operating costs for a production facility at a proposed rate of 20,000 tonnes per year of nickel as the intermediate mixed hydroxide. A preliminary assessment of producing a magnesium oxide by-product has also been carried out. This paper reports on the current development of the project and highlights the advantages of working in a chloride medium at atmospheric pressure and slightly elevated temperatures.
