To those who are in a position to carry the thought to a conclusion; I would like to present a theory for the cause of blisters in galvanized sheets. Blisters that are caused from piping and shrinkage cavities will not be considered because the reason for their formation is entirely obvious. Blisters that occur periodically with no apparent system of ocation, number, size or grouping, and then disappear with no. apparent change in manufacturing method, are the ones to which this theory would apply. Examination of blisters of the latter type has shown that they contain hydrogen gas at atmospheric pressure, and that occasionally traces of oxide or sulfide are found on the inner surface of the blisters. These two characteristics have led to the rather general idea that hydrogen gas generated in pickling, and that iron oxide supposed to be inherent in the ingot and causing weak spots were, in some manner, responsible for the development of blisters in galvanizing. The theory which I wish to advance is that these blisters are caused by moisture that has penetrated the steel after the annealing operation. This moisture comes from the atmosphere, or from pickling or washing and when it is suddenly expanded into superheated steam in galvanizing, the increase in volume is so great that it cannot escape with sufficient rapidity through the small opening where it entered as moisture.The pressure so generated forces the sheet apart along those lines of lamination ;hat may be found in practically all flat sections of steel rolled comparatively cold. The increase in volume. from moisture to steam at 800° F. is 2244 times the original volume of the moisture. The pressure generated by ;he moisture heated to 800° F. and entirely confined would be enough to expand or explode any container. This would explain the source of sufficient pressure to cause a sheet to blister.

E L. DEGOLYER, our new president, though a petroleum geologist by profession, has always s been associated with mining, for soon after his birth at Greensburg, Kan., on Oct. 9, 1886, his parents moved to Joplin, and when he went, in the course of time, to the University of Oklahoma, he intended to follow his course there with another at a mining school. He became a field assistant in the U. S. Geo-logical Survey, however, while still an undergradu-ate, and after field experi- ence in Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, Colorado and Oklahoma, he went to Mexico as geologist for the Mexican Eagle Oil Co. This was in 1909, and as a result he was unable to complete his work for his degree until 1911. In Mexico, he located the Potrero de Llaño No. 4, one of the world's largest oil wells, and also the dis- covery well in the Naran- jos pool; and the Colorado School of Mines conferred the honorary degree of : Doctor of Science on him in 1925. On his return from Mexico, he engaged in the consulting business, specializing in financial ap- praisement, the Union and Marland companies being among his clients. In 1919, he organized the Amerada Petroleum Co., with the backing of Lord Cowdray. Last year, control of the company was purchased by an American group, headed by Dillon, Read and Co. Mr. DeGolyer is n o w president of the company. He is also vice-president and general manager of the Rycade Corp, the Rycade Oil Corp., and president of the Geophysical Re-search search Corp. The l a t t e r represents the practical appli-cation of his inter-est in the use of the torsion balance in the locating of salt domes, in which he has pioneered, the Nash dome being the first oil field in America actually brought into production by these methods.

MECHANICAL loading and conveying equipment has been available for the coal-mining industry for more than twenty years. The earlier equip-ment-was admittedly crude and ill-fitted to perform its intended functions, but there are available today a variety of mechanical loaders and conveyors which may be said to be almost on a par with coal-cutting machines. Despite the fact that such equipment is available and that better and other types of equipment are continually being developed, mechanical loading of coal cannot yet be said to be economically successful, except in a few special cases. It is not an accomplished fact in the sense that machine cutting of coal and electric haulage are accomplished facts and a part of accepted practice. There are two general opinions why we have failed to obtain better results with mechanical loading and con-veying equipment. The equipment manufacturers will say that coal-mine operators have generally failed to establish and maintain the conditions required for suc-cess. The coal-mine operator says that the equipment is not adapted to cope with his specific conditions to the extent required for economically successful results. Just what is the objective of this movement toward mechanical loading? We speak of mechanical loading in such a way as to lead one to believe that we are mere-ly seeking a mechanical equivalent of the human loader and his shovel. Really, we are impressed with the fact that the coal-mining industry has not advanced toward greater productive efficiency to anything like the degree achieved by practically all of the other productive in-dustries, and we are seeking the means to remedy this. We have seen the advantages which follow the intro-duction of coal-cutters and electric haulage-locomotives. The loading of coal is the one major operation in coal mining which has not been mechanized. We believe that a satisfactory, mechanical substitute for the man with the shovel will help us increase our productive efficiency to the same degree as has been accomplished in the other productive industries.

THE Johnson award for 1926 was given to T. L. Joseph for his experimental work on blast-furnace operation. When the Bureau of Mines undertook its experimental blast-furnace investigation in 1919, a number of operators and metallurgists were doubtful as to the practicability of small-scale tests. Several pre-vious attempts, outside the Bureau, to operate small furnaces had been unsuccessful. However, pig iron was produced in three and four-ton furnaces during the first half of the nineteenth century. The operation of a small furnace did not therefore seem an impossible task. This point of view, together with a realization of the importance of problems connected with the pro-duction of pig iron, prompted the Bureau to undertake this work. Such problems as the feasibility of using charcoal briquets as a fuel, the application of oxygen enriched blast, and the use of new ores and raw ma-terials, in general, can be investigated only at consider-able cost on full sized furnaces, while with an experimental furnace they can be conducted at a com-paratively ;small, cost. The results of small-scale tests are sufficient to determine whether the problem. War-rants the expenditure required for a trial on a com-mercial scale. The accompanying photographs and chart show the various stages of the experimental furnace development. Some idea of the size and shape of furnaces which were tested can be had from the development chart. In oper-ating furnaces A to F, a series of changes were made to increase hearth temperature. Perhaps the most im-portant change was the position of the tuyeres with respect to the bottom of the hearth. The height of the tuyeres above the hearth was gradually increased and the hearth diameter decreased. It was shown by this series of furnaces that metal and slag are the chief source of heat supply to the crucible. For this reason there is a minimum rate at which these materials can be brought into the hearth of a small furnace if it is to function properly. The rate of slag "and metal fall are determined by the burden on the furnace and the rate of blowing. Due to lack of funds necessary to provide ample blowing equipment, hot blast stoves, essential mechani-cal features, and to meet operating expenses, it. was necessary to work with much smaller furnaces, such as G to K shown in the chart. The particular object of these tests was to study the extent to which reactions could be speeded up by decreasing the size of the stock. One decided change, noticed at the beginning of this series of tests, was the effect which coke size had on the production of a strongly reducing gas. Furnace G, 22 in. high, operating on coke crushed to pass 10 mesh, made a gas richer in carbon monoxide than did fur-naces A to F, operating on run-of-the-oven coke.

ONE of the most serious problems in the produc- tion of natural gas is the removal of water from the wells. As a gas well approaches its period of exhaustion, the removal of water by properly de-signed devices becomes increasingly important. Sev-eral methods are used for dewatering gas wells. If the .gas velocity and pressure are high enough, the water in the well will be carried out by the gas on opening the well to atmospheric pressure and allowing the gas to flow unrestricted except for the resistance of the casing. This method of dewatering a gas well is detri-mental to the producing sand, and very wasteful if used frequently. When the well has declined in production a string of tubing is often run in the well, with a packer set at the top or bottom of the well. If the top of the tubing is opened to atmospheric pressure and the gas is allowed to flow unrestricted as in the above method, the water can be discharged at the top of the well, provided the velocity of the gas is high enough. However, if the water has accumulated in the well until the water pres-sure is equal to or greater than the gas pressure, the ,water cannot be brought to the surface. In dewatering :a gas well by this method the operator sometimes finds -that if the packer is set near the top of the well and -the casing is tight, the water can be blown out when .it is impossible to blow it out with the packer set at the top of the sand. This is largely due to some gas leaking into the tubing through the collars. This method of dewatering gas wells is also wasteful. Water can be pumped out of a gas well with virtually the same equipment, as used for pumping oil, but the method involves installing a separate pump for each well, and difficulties are encountered in attempting to pump water under high gas pressure.

DURING the past few years Swedish geo-electrical prospecting methods have been described in several papers; namely, by us in a paper en-titled "Electrical Prospecting in Sweden," published by the Geological Survey of Sweden, 1925, and in a paper, "Electrical and Electro-Magnetic Prospecting," read by Hans Lundberg at the 1926 annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. In a written discussion on the latter paper, Theodore Zuschlag has made some observations, pub-lished in the Trans. Vol. LXXIV, which has just ap-peared. In this discussion the theories of the Swedish geo-electrical methods are criticized. The statements of Mr. Zuschlag are the reason for, our submitting the following information.1 In developing an art, such as electrical prospecting, the first thing to do, of course, is to make clear the fun-damental principles of electrical prospecting and then apply them to practice. This application cannot, in this case, be made by theoretical calculations only, because Nature is far too complicated to permit of exact theo-retical calculations on the phenomena involved in prac-tical electrical prospecting. Therefore, it is necessary to start with simplified cases, then turn to more and more complicated ones, and, finally, to test the applica-tion of results found, first in the laboratory and then in the field under known conditions.. Only in this way can results of practical value be obtained. This pro-cedure comprises three important parts: theory, the work in the laboratory, and the work in the field. In the papers mentioned above, we have briefly out-lined the work done in developing the Swedish geo-electrical methods, mainly giving some practical results, because these are most important and most likely to interest mining people. Possibly, because the discus-sion of theoretical considerations in our papers has been brief and sketchy, Mr. Zuschlag feels justified in in-ferring that the theories used as the foundation in Swedish electrical prospecting methods are not free from fundamental objections. AT the meeting of the Board of Directors on Jan. 28, 1927, the tentative budget of this Institute for next year was discussed, and in connection with the evident necessity for a larger income to meet increasing demands for service, the advisability of in- creasing the dues of members, was brought up. W. Spen- cer Hutchinson advocated an upward revision of the dues "believing it necessary that the Institute have a larger income, in order that it may carry on necessary work and render adequate service to its membership." Since this is a matter that directly affects every member, .President Taylor was directed to appoint a committee, which he did, consisting of George D. Barron, W. H. Bassett, and R. H. Sweetser, with T. T. Read as secre- tary, to bring in a tentative outline of the main factors in the problem for discussion at the annual meeting, on Feb. 15, and to prepare, after they have had the benefit of the discussion at that meeting, a report for the board. The amount of the annual dues is fixed by the con- stitution and can only be changed by proposing an amendment to the constitution. This amendment would have to be submitted to the members by letter ballot at the time of the election of officers for 1928, so that no change can be made in the dues for 1927 in any case. WHY THE INSTITUTE NEEDS MONEY At the annual meeting past-president Reynders, as chairman of the executive committee made the follow-ing report, which since it admirably sets forth the rea-sons why an increase in the dues has been suggested, is included here. "The report of the president has covered the situation so fully that little is left for me to say. However, a word in regard to the functions of the executive com-mittee may not be out of place.

AT the Wednesday morning session on Mine Ven-tilation, D. Harrington's report of the committee on metal mine ventilation was presented. He said the only paper which had been received was one from Nevada, although a number had been promised. Mr. Harrington gave instances from his experience where it had cost less to operate ventilating fans during idle periods in mines than the expense of replacing timber, which was destroyed by fungus during the period when the mines were not ventilated. He referred particu-larly to a metal mine in Michigan and a copper mine in the Southwest where this condition had been found in parallel tunnels, one of which had been ventilated after work had ceased and the other had not been. Mr. Harrington also referred to the fumes after blasting operations in mines operating in large bodies of sul-fide ores. By installing mechanical ventilating devices, these conditions had been greatly improved. He re-ferred also to a recent instance where an ignition of sulfide ore-dust had resulted in an explosion which killed three men and burned a fourth severely. Methane had been found in some gold mines and also in tunnels for city water-supply, and as a result coal-mine inspec-tion methods had been adopted. In one instance the contractor had changed from 40 per cent gelatine ex-plosive to a permissible explosive. A daily gas sample was taken. Nitrogen had been found in some of the mines, and CO, gas had been found in some of the Cripple Creek mines where a fan had been installed to maintain pres-sure on the working faces. It was found by experiment that the oxygen was absorbed by the rock particles, which led to a relatively greater percentage of CO. Coal-mine splitting ventilating methods had been used in some places. Miners' consumption had been made compensable in Ontario, and there is a large threat-ened charge now standing against metal mine oper-ators in the Province of Ontario. Mr. Harrington re-ferred to some of the literature, especially the recent book on ventilation by W. S. Weeks of the University of California. He suggested, however, that a better title for the book would have been "The Physics and Mechanics of Metal Mine Ventilation," since it was especially valuable in this field.

AT the meeting of January 28 which was held too late to be reported in the February MINING AND METAL-LURGY, Messrs. Taylor, Barron, Bassett, DeGolyer, Hutchinson, Norris, Rand, Reynders, Smith, Sweetser and Callow were present. Aside from routine matters, relating to finances and membership,, the Board author-ized establishment of a payroll account and payment by check. It also approved plans for a regional meeting to be, held at Cleveland on April 19 and 20 under the auspices of the Ohio Section and the Iron and Steel Committee. Following a report from the Committee on increase of Membership, Messrs. Barron, Bassett, and Sweetser were appointed as a special committee to con-sider the feasibility of increasing the dues. Mr. Read was made secretary of this Committee. A pleasant feature of the meeting was the presence of past-presi-dent Olcott and the presentation by him to the Institute of an elaborate scrap book, covering the excursion through Mexico made by the Institute in 1901. The meeting was preceded by a dinner at which Scott Turner spoke of the problems of the Bureau of Mines and the large volume of service work for the govern-ment it was now called on to perform. M. L. Requa discussed the need of more exact data covering our national reserve of minerals. E. N. Cooper gave a vivid picture of conditions in Mexico. W. H. Bassett told of the problems before the Institute of Metals, and Zay Jeffries told of the plans for that Division now being formulated. Max W. Ball reinforced what Mr. Requa had said relative to the importance and value of conservation studies as relates to minerals.

ONE of the features of the annual meeting was a round table conference on carbon in pig iron, on Feb. 16. This was presided over by R. H. Sweetser, and the discussion, which was so interesting as to require holding an additional session in the after-noon, ranged over such a wide field that only a brief outline of it will be attempted here. The full discus-sion together with the papers will be printed later. The first paper was one on the need for research in foundry pig iron (1648-C) by Richard Moldenke, who pointed out the trend in present practice of attaining low cost in pig iron production by hotter blast, addi-tion of. scrap to the blast furnace, and. the enormous increase in the output per furnace day. He pointed out that remelting processes are oxidizing processes, to some degree at least, and the metal cannot be given the deoxidizing finish which is characteristic of the steel-making process. The trend today is toward specifying total carbon content in foundry pig irons, and since the carbon content depends on a variety of factors, he suggested that the blast-furnace men and the foundry men study the question and agree on a minimum of total carbon for the given silicon ranges. The discussion of this paper was participated in by E. J. Lowry, Robert Jones, T. L. Joseph,. R. H. Sweet-ser, J. G. Ferguson, W. B. Coleman, E. P. Ross and D. J. Demorest and ranged from a comparison of the total carbon used in making a ton of pig iron in charcoal practice versus coke practice to a discussion of the bad effects observable from the use of scrap This paper was followed by one on carbon character-istics of copper-bearing pig iron by W.. B. Coleman. In view of the belief in many foundries that copper-bear-ing pig iron made trouble in the foundry, experiments were made by adding copper in various amounts up to 1 per cent and with the cooperation of the Robesonia Iron Co. a large number of tests were made over a run of foundry iron. The final conclusion was that the ad-dition of less than 1 per cent metallic copper did not seem to alter the physical properties and that a blast furnace using copper-bearing ore can produce pig iron suitable for making small castings, showing low-Brinell hardness test, good transverse and deflection tests, and high-total carbon.

THIS annual lecture, under the auspices of the Institute of Metals Division, and which was illus- trated by lantern slides, has been printed in full and a limited number are available for distribution on request. Some excerpts from the lecture are given below: Ever since the simple geometrical relations of crystals were discovered, it has been recognized that their proper-ties are best explained by assuming that their ultimate particles are arranged on a space lattice, and that the char-acteristics of that lattice determine the shape of the crystal and its physical and mechanical properties. Modern ex-amination by means of X-rays has widened that concep-tion and given it greater; definiteness, and the atoms are now regarded as the particles forming the space lattice. The splendid achievements of investigators in this field have made it possible to state, for a large number of sub-stances, the form and dimensions of the lattice. The char-acteristic of a lattice is that a unit of simple geometrical form is repeated at regular intervals in three dimensions so as to fill the entire crystal. It follows that there must be certain planes in which the atoms are more closely packed than in planes drawn at any angle to them, and it is these planes of closest packing which play the greatest part in determining the growth and other properties of the crystal. There are actually two stages in crystallization, what-ever be the medium in which it occurs. The first is the ap-pearance of crystal nuclei; the second the growth of those nuclei to form crystals of appreciable .size. The first is clearly a kinetic phenomenon. In the molten mass, solu-tion, or vapor, the molecules are in a state of rapid motion and frequent collision. When the temperature has fallen so far. that it is possible for a crystal to exist, a few col-liding molecules may fail to rebound, and so become at-tached to one another, the balance between the attracting and repelling forces-between them causing them to arrange themselves on a space lattice, to which other molecules sub-sequently attach themselves. It was once maintained that the X-ray evidence demanded that the molecule should dis-appear in the solid crystal, but this was a wrong inference, and in many crystals, but not in all, the chemical molecule retains its identity in the solid state. In pure metals the atom and the molecule are identical, so that the conditions are unusually simple. How many. nuclei will be formed in a given mass is evi-dently a problem in probability. Experiments to deter-mine the relation between the temperature and the number of nuclei formed in a given time have been made with some success by using viscous organic substances, but metals offer much greater difficulties, and the few determinations which have been published are vitiated by serious errors. However, the examination of sections of ingots of the same composition and cast at 'the same temperature in similar molds will show, that the number of crystals does not vary widely.

WHILE Mr. Fahrenwald has been working on the fundamentals of ore-dressing, in Idaho, the Northwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington, has been studying the corresponding fundamentals for the closely-allied subject of coal-washing. In this work many of the principles outlined in Mr. Fahrenwald's paper have been touched on, one important exception being that phase of his studies where conditions were approximated between those existing on a table and those existing in a hindered-settling classifier. During the past three years this work has been given over almost exclusively to a study of coal-tabling to devise better methods of cleaning fine sizes of coal, particularly the coals of the Northwest, which are very difficult to wash. One important result of this study thus far has been the development of a satisfactory hindered-settling coal classifier, now in use in several commercial plants. Recently table stratifica-tion has been the subject for study. This latter phase of the work with coal,. as well as the earlier portion dealing with hindered-settling classification, has in a measure paralleled Mr. Fahrenwald's work with ore. Without going into details about the results of the coal experiments, I shall merely say that, from a quali-tative standpoint, they are, in general, concordant with Mr. Fahrenwald's, but that from a quantitative stand-point the results, particularly those with, table strati-fication, are somewhat different. These differences may disappear as the work progresses-Mr. Fahrenwald is further ahead with his experiments than we are at the Northwest Station-but if not, the disparity would not be surprising, and indeed would be what one might reasonably expect when investigators work on two very dissimilar materials and use different apparatus and methods of study. However, this- mention of our coal-washing experiments is made only in passing. A principle of general application that may be estab-lished from Mr. Fahrenwald's paper is that different types of stratification should be used in successive' gravity-concentration processes to. obtain best results.

SUMMARY THE results of an enquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration 'are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys.

THE paper on "Cross-cuts in Coal Mining," by J. J. Rutledge (published in MINING AND METAL-LURGY, February, 1927, p. 64) was brought up for discussion at the annual meeting, where the follow-ing comments were made T. D. Thomas (Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co., Lansford, Pa.) : This question has caused me a lot of worry, not in the particular district in which I am, but throughout other districts. There are always several angles to consider. If you are in a hurry to push development work, you might increase the distance between cross-cuts from 60 to 350 ft., but if you have a 40-ft. chain pillar every 60 ft. it will cut down your entry driving a whole lot. Looking at it from the ventilation angle, I agree that too many cross-cuts in entries are bad things. You have a tremendous amount of leakage, and I have seen currents starting out with 45,000 cu. ft., and after passing about 30 or 40 cross-cuts the current has dwindled down to about 18,000 or 15;000 cu. ft. The result is that the question of putting in auxiliary fans is raised. That involves several points into which I do not want to go too far, but I am in favor of not getting in too many cross-cuts, putting them in only where they are necessary: I think the state mining laws are wrong in a number of places on that, and that when you finish with a cross-cut it should be in the room. It should be well sealed on an entry. There are several ways of tightening up the cross-cuts so as not to have the great amount of leakage and wastage of: air that we now have. 'I prefer tile stopping; other people prefer cement or brick, but there is a big fac-tor to all mines, saving the mine. I checked up on the number of fans in the anthracite region and found there are 651. That was derived from the state report of 1921, and it enabled me to compute from the power the weight of the air. In the anthracite region of Pennsylvania we put in 9 tons of air to every ton of coal we get out. Tracing that back again and taking the Government's figures which they made some time ago, I found but 20 per cent of the air got to the faces where it was actually needed. That is a tremendous big loss and shows a possibility for saving, money for the various coal companies. Chairman Rice: I think what Mr. Thomas refers to was an investigation by R. Y. Williams, of the Bureau of Mines in Illinois, where a study was made of 100 typical mines, and, speaking off-hand, my recollection is that we found as little as 15 per cent of air reached the faces in one of the mines and another was as much as 50. That seems to be a reflection on the type of stoppings and general ventilation scheme.

IN anticipation of a shortage of labor for hand-tram-ming at the Cliffs shaft mine of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., early in 1923 three 4-ton Goodman storage-battery locomotives, equipped with Edison batteries, were purchased. Storage-battery locomotives were chosen for this work because the expense and time required to put up trolley-wire and to bond the rails of the complicated system of tracks on the levels, where the locomotives were to be used, would not have been warranted by the amount of ,ore to be handled. The only changes in the tracks necessary for storage-battery locomotives were new switches and extra ties and braces on curves. The tracks were 24-in. gage, and were laid with 20-lb. rail. Edison batteries were chosen, because it was desired to charge the batteries from the trolley circuit already, in the mine, and this would have been impracticable with lead batteries. Each locomotive is equipped with 126 A-4 Edison cells, which are charged in series from the 240-volt trolley circuit while the trolley locomotives are running; and are discharged in parallel in two banks of 63 cells each. These locomotives were so successful that later 5 smaller locomotives, weighing 11/2 tons each, were pur-chased for use e with cars that are filled by hand and on levels where the amount of ore handled is small. These locomotives, built by the Geo. D. Whitcomb Co. of Rochelle, Ill., are equipped with batteries of 40 A-4 Edison cells each, the cells being the same as those, on the larger locomotives. They are charged from mer-curial-are rectifiers. These locomotives are operated by the trammers themselves, and have not special oper-ators like the larger machines. The trammers are all young men of American birth, and take quickly to the operation of machinery, and the simplicity of the con-trol on these locomotives has made special training unnecessary. A survey of the results was made by the A. C. Nielsen So., an excerpt from which follows: Eight Edison-equipped battery locomotives are now in use at an Ishpeming mine of the Cleveland-. Cliffs Iron Co. This equipment was installed to take the place of men who formerly pushed loaded cars by hand. Results have been very satisfactory and the de-pendable, trouble-free operation of the Edison batteries is considered to have been an important factor in the effectiveness of the new hauling method.

IT is customary for the president of an engineering society, in his annual address, to describe either some engineering problem with which he has beer connected or to review the work of the society during his administration. My first thought, this being the sesquicentennial year of our nation, was to review the advance in coal mining for the past fifty years, during which period I have been more or less intimately con-nected with the bituminous coal industry, and have personally witnessed most of the great changes which have occurred in methods and machinery used in the production of coal, but preparation of the requisite address would take more time than could be spared to prepare it, and its presentation would consume so much time that it .would not be suitable. The new arrangement providing for giving the presi-dent's address at the business meeting makes it more .appropriate to review the work of the Institute during the past year, together with some suggestions which appeal to me as being of advantage to the future wel-fare of the Institute, which I will try to do briefly. The work of the business office has been reviewed in the Secretary's report and it will not be necessary for me to dwell on it. Suffice it to say, it seems to be going along very well. Additional work could be done which would be to the advantage of the Institute, if we had the money with which to defray the necessary ex-pense incident to it, but I will refer to this again later. I would be derelict if I did not refer to the splendid work of the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary. Keeping in touch with all the sections, which number now about 26, and affiliated student societies which number 40, besides special committees, and represent-ing the Institute on various boards, provides work enough to occupy the Secretary's time almost exclu-sively. In addition to this the Secretary and the As-sistant Secretary have the work of editing and publishing the TRANSACTIONS of the Institute; the issuing of the magazine, MINING AND METALLURGY, in the splendid manner in which it goes out to the mem-bership is no light task and I think they should receive the commendation of the membership for this work.

THE Secretary of Commerce is to be urged to as-sume leadership in assembling data as to produc-tion and consumption of minerals and metals, and studies of their importance in trade, as a result of the joint conference of the Institute and the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, held on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 15. With no set program and no especial effort to promote interest 120 members of the two soci-eties assembled and for two hours discussed in the most informal and frank manner the whole situation. George Otis Smith acted as chairman, Clinton H. Crane, who was to have served in that capacity, having been called abroad unexpectedly. Major Taylor for the Army and Capt. R. E. Bakenhus for, the Navy paid high tribute to the value of the reports already made by the committees of the two societies and pointed out the need of addi-tional data and of constant review of the figures, as a measure of national defense. J. E. Spurr, R. C. Allen, W. O. Hotchkiss, Fred Hellmann, W. Spencer Hutchin-son, P. N. Moore, A. C. Lane, E. E. Ellis, and others discussed various phases of the subject, reviewed what had so far been done, what was now in progress, what had been planned for the future, and the necessary limitations of the work. A. W. G. Wilson related the experience of the Canadian Government in this field, emphasized the importance of studies of the rate of consumption, and brought up the special case of the waste of the sulfur in sulfide ores with correspondingly increased demand on raw sulfur supplies. Mr. Lane pointed out that conservation, to be soundly based, must recognize the necessity of the present value of the ex-pected future returns exceeding the cost of the conserva-tion. Mr. Ellis called attention to the remarkably rapid change in technology and other factors that made predic-tions for more than a very short period extremely risky. Mr. Hotchkiss noted the large part of modern industry that is fundamentally dependent on minerals. Studies made by him indicated that even in a furniture manu-facturing center, such as Grand Rapids ids with its large consumption of wood, the metal and mineral industries constituted 60 per cent of the industrial life. For Michi-gan as a whole 55 per cent of the capital used in all in-dustries was employed in the mining and the metal in-dustries. This, he said, was little recognized because the buyer of alloys and metals was so far from the pro-ducer of raw materials, .but the ultimate supply of the latter was evidently of fundamental importance to the whole people. Mr. Spurr held that the more knowledge as to these matters the better. Mr. Hellmann felt that in the especial case of copper, wastage was less impor-tant than markets and economical routing of metal to them. Mr. Hutchinson classified minerals into three groups: (a) those, such as gold, that are used with very little loss; (b) those, such as coal, as are entirely consumed in use; and (c) the intermediate group. The problem, he thought, was necessarily different for the minerals of each group. Mr. Manning proposed definite-ly that since it was manifestly a great national problem, the Department of Commerce be asked to assume leader-ship here and to devote the necessary funds and staff to keeping up such a perpetual inventory of mineral resources as would best serve the public needs, both for war and peace. Both George Otis Smith and Scott Turner agreed that this was probably already within the authority of the Department but Mr. Turner told of the difficulty in obtaining sufficient funds for the work. Recognizing that the job was large enough to require the help of both public and private interests and the desire of the two societies to be helpful to the maximum extent, the Chair was asked to appoint a committee from the meeting to present to the Council of the Society and the Board of Directors of the Insti-tute a definite plan for further work. DISCUSSION of a paper is sometimes more in-teresting in what has not been said than in what is said. In the present case the paper is mainly directed to certain thermo-dynamic relation-ships in the blast furnace. Careful reading of the dis-cussion fails to show a single use of the term, heat unit, or its equivalent. If we wish to know very-much about the furnace action it is necessary to count calories or B.t.u. Nothing much is. said about the availability of heat at high temperatures, although it will be generally admitted that in seeking underlying limiting factors in the furnace economy the hearth heat relations offer-the most promising clues. Those discussing the paper, with exceptions of course, apparently have failed to recognize an outstand-ing fact. It is a fact that the heat actually generated by the air oxygen in CO formation (including the blast heat) is in excess, after charging off radiation, etc., by from 70 to .90 per cent over the heat absorbed in melting the iron and slag and calcining the stone reduction by CO absorbing no heat. The fact stands out as plainly as does the fact that the furnace functions largely as a gas producer. The surplus heat is there. It is in the picture. Why not take a look at it, face the fact? That the surplus heat is necessitated by the hearth conditions admits of very little if any doubt. The furnace is really two separate pieces of apparatus: the hearth, doing certain work, and the superimposed shaft, doing certain other work. The combustion of fuel in the hearth, primarily serving the hearth pur-poses, generates much more heat and gas than the shaft requires, or can use, in smelting work. The result is surplus heat makes still more gas in the heat-absorbing reaction between CO, and coke; what is left of the surplus going to top heat. Here we have a simple yet adequate sketch of the furnace action. Having obtained a fairly comprehensive view of the existing heat relations of both hearth and shaft, the way to improvement seems quite plain. Either do more of the work above the hearth or put more heat into the hearth. Since there is already a great surplus of heat above the hearth, probably little needs to be done by way of increasing the proportion of the work done in the shaft. The shaft can, however, probably do much more work than it is now doing provided that a way, can be found to get more work, done in the hearth. The hearth heat is nicely balanced. Losses by radiation and water cooling and other losses are already taken care of. Any increase of hearth heat development could be utilized in taking care of increased smelting work. Aside from the possibility of increased blast heat, there is one sure way of putting more heat into the hearth, and this is to blow more air. And since the shaft already has more gas than it needs, the increased gas resulting from the greater blast volume can be withdrawn from the bosh after it has done its work in the hearth. Now an increase of burden will cool the shaft, cut down solution loss and thereby supply addi-tional coke in the hearth to burn with the additional air blown. The hearth heat per pound of coke charged will be proportionately increased. The balance between hearth and shaft will be better. Gruener's ideal will be more nearly attained, if not exceeded. Most inter-esting of all perhaps, the more the burden is increased, the more coke will reach the hearth and the more burden can be added. The effect is to be cumulative.

AS a member of the Institute and as the president of the National Coal Association, I come before you today in a dual role. As an Institute mem-ber I welcome the opportunity to make complimentary reference to the growing support which bituminous coal operators are giving to programs looking to the advancement of the engineering profession, and to suggest plans whereby these programs may be enlarged to mutual advantage. As a representative of the bitu-minous industry, it gives me special pleasure to express the appreciation of the industry for the services ren-dered to it by members of your profession. Needless to say, there is a close relationship between the engineer and the coal operator. With increasing frequency and in the interests of the industry, the engineer is becoming more of a factor in the business of producing coal. I need look no further for an out-standing example of this encouraging trend than to Samuel A. Taylor, who not only is a bituminous coal producer but also has risen to such eminence in the engineering profession as to have been chosen the head of this great body of technical men, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. There are many coal operators whom I might mention as having achieved distinction in the engineering world, such as Howard. N. Eavenson, chairman of the .Coal and Coke Committee. And I would be guilty of a serious .oversight if I failed to make reference to Eckley B. Coxe, one of the founders of the Institute in 1871, a prominent anthracite operator and credited with several important inventions. While it is true that a. considerable number of execu-tives of coal-producing companies in this country came up through the engineering ranks. the proportion of mine executives in England, France, and Germany who are graduate engineers is much larger than it is in the United States. In France all members of the staff are engineers and such is the case in Germany up to the owner of the mine. In Germany the owner is not so frequently an engineer as is the rule in France.
