"INTRODUCTION For the last several years the oil industry has been turning more and more toward conservation arid the study of related production problems. It is generally conceded that ultimate recovery is increased by holding the natural gas in thy sand which is net needed in lifting the oil. The retained gas lowers the viscosity and surface tension of the oil and helps flow the oil from the sand. Lewis states that ""while the operator can not control the original conditions of energy and resistance in the sand, he can partly control the efficiency of expulsion. As it is the energy contained in the compressed and absorbed gas rather than the oil that is exhausted, it is but logical to judge the efficiency of a producing method largely by the relative quantities of gas produced with each barrel of oil. If by a change in method the producer lessons the proportion of gas with each barrel of oil, he should increase the total recovery- of oil correspondingly, even if the rate of production is temporarily reduced somewhat.""The effect of ""pinching in"" or controlling the flow of oil wells in an effort to lessen the proportion of has never been definitely known. The general belief has been that ""pinching"" a flowing well causes the oil and gas volumes to be reduced proportionately, maintaining the same gas-oil ratio as before the reduction in flow was made. Studies of gas-oil ratios in many fields have shown that much gas has been wasted, insofar as its effectiveness in oil production is concerned. Swigart and Bopp carried."

"Nearly every piece of electrical equipment used in mines ""breathes."" In other words, motors, controllers, rheostats, switches, and other similar equipment, even though encased in seemingly tight compartments, breathe in the atmosphere that surrounds them.As the apparatus is used, the temperature of metallic parts is changed generally in positive direction through the heat by friction and the heat due to the electric current. When the apparatus is idle it gradually cools down to the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.This increase of temperature during operation and return to normal temperature when operation stops alternately raises and lowers the temperature of the atmosphere within the compartments which, in strict accordance with Charles' law -T = VT1 V'will expand or contract in proportion to any given temperature change.As compartments are not gas-tight, such expansion and contraction will force the atmosphere out of the compartment =on expansion and suck the surround¬ing atmosphere into the compartment during contraction, hence the term ""breathing.""Investigators of explosion-proof equipment have recognized that such an interchange would take place and have designed their equipment to safeguard possible explosions within the compartments."

"The literature on flotation of oxidized ores except for patents (especially for reagents) is very sparse. The Bureau of Mines in 1936, published a circular on the subject, by Ralston and Allen. The treatment of oxides by flotation was then in its infancy, but several of the most important mining companies in the Western United States and Mexico are now operating flotation plants for treating oxidized ores. The purpose of this present circular is to review the progress made and bring the subject up to date. One of the writers of the 1916 report (Mr. Allen) has been associated with some of the most important mining companies who have put into practical operation the process of flotation of oxidized ores; among these companies are the Shhttuck Arizona Copper Co., Bisbee, Arizona (now the Shattuck Denn Co.) and the San Francisco Mines of Mexico, Ltd., San Francisco Del Oro, Chihuahua, Mexico. His experience and other sources of information have been freely drawn on in pre-paring this paper. Mr. Ralston, assistant chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, contributed many valuable suggestions and criticisms.Sulphidizing Reagents for Oxidize Ores.The various reagents and methods that might possibly be used for sulphidizing were summarized by Ralston and Allen as follows:""Sulphidizing (1) by the use of hydrogen sulphide on either the dry or the wet crushed ore, (2) by the use of solutions of the various sulphides and sulpho-compounds of sodium, (3) by the use of solutions of the various sulphides and sulpho-compounds of calcium, (4) by the use of sulphur vapor, (5) by the use of a sulphureted oil, (6) with colloidal sulphur."

"""To prevent the propagation of mine explosions, the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, recommends rock-dusting all coal mines, except anthracite mines, in every part, whether in damp or dry condition. It also recom¬mends that rock-dust barriers be used to sectionalize the mine as additional defense; but these should not be regarded as a substitute for generalized rock-dusting."" (Mine safety decision, No. 5, April 7, 1927.)The purposes of this circular are to present concisely the requirements for effective rock-dusting of coal mines in order to prevent propagation of mine explosions, and to point out the principal related facts on explosibility of coal dusts and mixed coal-mine dusts, as determined by extensive testing in the Experimental Mine of the Bureau of Mines. study of these principal facts on coal-dust explosibility in conjunction with the recommendations for rock-dusting, should help to make clear to mine operators and others concerned the necessity for systematic rock-dusting in all coal mines except anthracite mines, and the futility of inadequate or sporadic rock dusting.The descriptions of nearly 1000 explosion tests in the Experimental Mine are available in a forth-coming bulletin2 and in earlier publications.3For detailed specifications as to the kind of rock-dust, amount to use, where to be applied, and method of sampling and testing, the reader is referred to Bureau of Mines Serial 26064, and American Engineering Standard Committee ""Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines"" quoted in Bureau of Mines Information Circular No. 60305.Summary of Specifications for Rock-Dusting1. "Introduction In 1925 the Bureau of Mines published as Technical Paper 346 a discussion of typical crude oils of the Western Hemisphere. That paper was one of a series of surveys of typical crude oils, and was the first of these to deal with properties of crude oils from countries other than the United States. The paper contains comments, tabulated data, and individual analyses of crudes typical of the producing districts of Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru; for comparison, it also has analyses of typical crudes from the chief producing districts of the United States.The Bureau of Mines undertook a study of foreign crude oils for two reasons: First, foreign fields are potential sources of supply for the United States; in fact, considerable quantities of some foreign crudes have already been imported. Second, these oils are very similar in physical and chemical properties to oils found in the United States, and a study of these resemblances has scientific value.After the publication of Technical Paper 346, the attention of the Bureau was called to the fact that the two analyses of crude oil from Venezuela which appeared in that paper were not completely representative of the production of that country. Samples of other types of oil were procured through the cooperation of Mr. R. Ogarrio, manager of the Texas Petroleum. Co., Huston, Texas, and officials of the following companies operating in Venezuela; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., Creole Syndicate, and Venezuelan Gulf Oil Co.. Samples were collected and dispatched by Mr. D. 3. Park, representative in Maracaibo, Venezuela, of the Texas Petroleum Co. The value of the interest and cooperation of these agencies in obtaining the samples is gratefully acknowledged."

"IntroductionMany bituminous coal-mining companies have inaugurated extensive safety Programs, but the failure to have approved or permissible equipment or safe practice in only one part of a mine has resulted in disaster. The necessity of using only equipment bearing the U. S. Bureau of Mines approval plate is emphasized by the fact that many accidents are the direct result of carelessness on the part of trusted employees using non-permissible equipment. A concrete example is found in the case of an explosion on October 26, 1926, in a mine in the Pittsburgh district, Pennsylvania.Story of the ExplosionAt about 10 o'clock on the night of the explosion an examination was made in No 2 butt left and parallel off 7o. 14 north, and was found to be clear of dangerous accumulations of gas. (See figure). Several hours later a crew of two men brought a self-propelling rock-dusting machine within 50 feet of the face of Po. 2 butt parallel before they examined for gas. The machine operator found an accumulation of explosive gas about 18 inches from the roof. He began to wave his arms thoroughly mixing the gas and air. Undoubtedly a highly explosive mixture was created, and as the men attempted to run the machine back to fresh air an explosion occurred.The helper dropped to the floor and was burned about the face and wrists. The machine operator ran down the entry and was more severely burned about the face, neck, and arms. He later developed pneumonia and died. Both men reached the door in the chute between No. 14 and No. 15 north. A pumper, who had felt the rush of air, found the men and helped them to walk outside."

"The Bureau of Mines in Serial No. 2606,4 issued in May, 1924, gave tentative specifications for rock-dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines. Subsequently, a sectional committee of the American Engineering Standards Committee was appointed to formulate recommendations for standard practice in rock-dusting coal mines. The report of this Committee which follows was approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee, December 30, 1925. Several members of the Bureau of Mines staff served on this Sectional Committee and its recommendations are essentially in harmony with those of the Tentative Specifications in Serial No. 2606.As certain explanatory details contained in that serial are not included in the recommendations formulated by the American Engineering Standards Committee, it should be considered by coal-mine managements in conjunction with the committee's report which follows:Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines to Prevent Coal-Dust Explosions 1. Definitions of Terms Used: The term ""Mine"" shall include all underground excavations from which coal is hoisted or transported to the surface, through one or more openings.The term ""Main Haulage"" shall include all underground slopes and planes, all rock tunnels, and all entries excepting those from which rooms or chambers are turned.The term ""Entry"" shall include all underground haulageways, travellingways and airways, excepting working places as defined below:"

"IntroductionThe data contained in this paper were collected during the course of an investigation which covered 15 representative coal mines in 6 coal-mining States. The purpose of the investigation was to determine by atmospheric sampling how much dust was raised into the air during the various operations of coal mining, such as undercutting with machines, loading coal by hand, and transporting it from the working face to the surface. The data thus obtained were considered from two angles - namely, the possible physiological effect of inhalation and the explosion hazard of the dust. No attempt will be mode to discuss the former factor in this paper.CONDITIONS OF MININGThe mines in which this investigation was conducted were considered representative, and it is believed that the results obtained will suffice for the average dustiness encountered in most coal mines. .All of the coal mined was bituminous, from beds 30 to 120 inches thick. Only the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining was employed. Daily production ranged from approximately 700 to 1500 tons and the men employed from 150 to 450. Coal was undercut by short-wall mining machines in all mines, with the exception of one in which pick mining was employed. Loading at the face was done by miners; none of the mines used mechanical loaders. Electric drills, both for brushing roof and for shooting coal, were commonly used although some roof work was done with jack-hammers and a. little of both with augers. Coal was hauled by motor, mule, or rope power in end-gate cars with capacities ranging from 1600 to 3600 pounds. With few exceptions, coal was won at the face by dry methods - that is to say, no water was employed fox wetting down the dust either during undercutting, loading, or transportation."

A FACT not generally understood about the Engineering Societies Library on Thirty-ninth Street in New York -in particular, not realized by many of the great indus-tries of the country-is that it is a free public institution. To utilize its valuable facilities one does not have to be a member of the national engineering societies (which shoul-der its financial deficit each year). Anyone, at any place in the world, can use the library. A man in California, or in South America, or in Persia, can write or cable to the Library staff and receive information on the same basis as any engineer living in New York. For example, a few months ago an American mining en-gineer in China needed additional geological information about a district which he was about to explore. He cabled his need to the Engineering Societies Library and the next steamer brought him the data he wanted. A phosphorus company in Alabama wished to obtain a translation from the Norwegian of an article on cement which they had heard about. They wrote to the Engineer-ing Societies Library; the article was located, and a trans-lation made and sent them.

THE world production of copper for the first eight months of 1927 shows an increase of 3 per cent over the same period in 1926. Since February of this year, however, production has been considerably curtailed. The United States reduction in the last four months has been offset by the increased South Ameri-can and Belgian Congo production. The United States is now producing 58 per cent of the world production, Chile and Peru 17.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 5 per cent. In 1926 the United States produced 54 per cent, Chile and Peru 16.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 6.3 per cent. THE mining engineer is being more generally called on to examine and report on properties where the introduction of mechanical loaders is proposed, and as the use of these labor-saving devices presents an entirely different problem from that of hand-loading, an outline of procedure is herewith pre¬sented based on five years of intensive field experience in making such studies. It is impossible to outline an examination which will cover every condition but the most important variables are noted and the re¬port may be amplified or abridged to suit individual mine requirements. There are, of course, exceptional cases in which a single minor variable will determine the final conclusion; the result of mechanical loader application can be, estimated within close limits by considering all variables listed and taking into account the sum of all those found to be applicable to the property under examination. It is necessary that a high degree of accuracy be exercised in the analysis of conditions, and that a relatively narrow margin be figured on all estimates of tonnage outputs and costs. In making an examination for this purpose the data as to company name, business address, name of mine, geographical location, rail or water connections, type of mine (whether shaft, slope, or drift), and the name of seam should, of course, be included, to be followed by the minimum, maximum, and average thickness of seam, a brief description of the charac¬teristics of the coal, the impurities contained, location of regular impurities or partings, together with nota¬tion as to quality, uses, and-markets for the coal. It is also necessary to make cross-sections of the seam so that face preparation may be studied in an effort to eliminate all regularly-occurring impurities at the working place. The possibilities for further cost re¬ductions by the removal and gobbling of partings under¬ground before mechanically ? loading out a face are sufficiently great to warrant careful study and analysis. The classification of the mine from the standpoint of gaseous or non-gaseous operation will determine the general type of electrical equipment needed. A notation regarding the power whether generated at the mine or purchased, together with the amount, voltage, and type of current available is necessary since these matters determine the exact type of elec¬trical equipment to be used. A brief description of the ventilating system, giving type of fan, amount. of air delivered, water gage, and whether force or ex¬haust type, will enable the engineer' to figure venti¬lating requirements per man under mechanical loading practices. The pitch of seam in degrees, the pitch of working faces, and a brief description of rolls or horsebacks should be included, as these affect the efficiency of mechanical loading and, therefore, the economic re¬sults obtainable. -Notations should be made as to the amount of water found in working faces, and whether pumping, sprinkling or rock-dusting methods should be considered. As the character of the floor affects the operation of the machine at the face if a cater¬pillar-tread type, its hardness should be determined, and also whether impurities consisting of floor ma¬terial are likely to be loaded with the coal. The char¬acter of the roof and overlying stratification determine the mining system and width of roof span at work¬ing faces. It therefore directly regulates the amount of tonnage to be loaded by machines without a move from one place to another.

THROUGH the courtesy of the Southern Appala-chian Coal Operators' Association, a joint meeting of the Southern Appalachian Efficiency Associa-tion and local members of the A. I. M. E. and A. S. M. E. was held at Knoxville, Tenn., on Nov. 12. In introduc-ing the subject and stating the object of the meeting, H. Foster Bain, speaking for the. Institute members, said "Shoveling coal is the largest job of hand labor re-maining in this country, with the exception of the mis-cellaneous work on the farms, and even there nearly all the big jobs are now performed with the help of machines. The men in the coal mines, by hand labor, dig, each year, more cubic yards than were taken out of the Panama Canal. It has been a natural ambition of engineers, operators and men alike to follow here the characteristic lead of American industry and to substi-tute as far as possible the work of machines for the work of men; to promote the latter to the position of con-trolling and directing mechanical power rather than being themselves the machines that lift the coal from the floor of the room into the mine car. "Handling materials is one of the regular jobs of mechanical engineers, and the American Society of Me-chanical Engineers maintains a Materials Handling Division for discussion of the technical problems con-cerned. Having in mind the excellent results that had flowed from application of mechanical power and de-vices to these problems in factories, port terminals, warehouses, and other above-ground plants, the Me-chanical Engineers began to consider the possibility of introducing similar methods underground. Individual-ly, many were called upon to design, erect and operate machines for such use and at once they found them-selves faced by many novel conditions and difficulties. The Division thereupon planned a general meeting in New York in March, 1926, for consideration of problems and progress in this field. He omitted to inclose a flow-sheet of the concentration process, which detracts somewhat from its value to the technical man, and cost figures are lacking. Perhaps he was run off the lease when his questions on milling recoveries became too searching. Still and all, according to the picture the plant ap-pears to be operating efficiently. It is reasonable to believe that the cost of electric power per ton milled is held to a low figure. We commend the proper pro-fessional stance of the gentleman on the business end of the hand jig, though we look in vain for the time honored spring board to aid him in giving the most efficient stroke.

TWO or three years ago there were submitted to me some reports of tests that had been made on a semi-oxidized ore of silver looking to its treat-ment by combined flotation and cyanidation, together with a sample of the ore, with a request that I check the tests and confirm them, if possible. These tests had been made by a machinery-supply house and with them was a flow-sheet for a proposed mill, with full details of equipment to be used in the mill. The limited data on which this was based at once attracted my attention and have caused me from time to time to put various groups of students at work to develop simpler methods of obtaining data, which it appeared should be at hand and could be obtained by simple tests before attempting to treat these ores commercially. A brief discussion of the working out of such methods may be of interest and may contribute somewhat to the de-velopment of better testing methods for the small operator who has not at his command a staff of metallurgists. Of several tests on samples of varying assay and mineralogical composition, by cyanidation alone, by flotation alone, and, by combinations of the two, the following report was perhaps the most complete and may well serve as a typical example: METALLURGICAL TEST REPORT Silver Mines Co. Semi-oxidized Ore Procedure: Ore ground to 65 mesh, given flotation treat-ment using pine oil and potassium xanthate. Flotation tailing was thickened and given cyaniding agitation in solution strength of 5 lb. cyanide per ton and 2 lb. lime per ton.

THE Isley furnace control, here presented as a novelty in furnace construction, is, in principle, one of the oldest methods of maintaining furnace heat for industrial purposes. Records unearthed in Egyptian tombs and the primitive methods of melting metal practiced by African tribes today indicate that fanning the fire and forcing the furnace by bellows have been an effective means of regulating heat for man's work during thousands of years. Even today, these cruder forms of mechanical draft production are still nn use within the borders of this most highly developed industrial land. Stacks, as we know them, are of com- paratively recent historical age but their attractive simplicity and seeming effectiveness have made them exceedingly popular. And so we find one of the most important types of furnace the world has even known, the open-hearth furnace, duly and more or less properly equipped with a chimney. The regenerative, or reversing, type of furnace, how-ever, required another mechanism between its hearth and the stack to provide a means for alternately con-necting one side and the other of its system of regen-erative chambers and flues to the stack and to a source of fuel and air supply respectively. Various types of reversing valves were developed, some of which are re-markably well designed for maximum efficiency and ease of installation as well as operation. However, this combination has a number of inherent faults which are so difficult to correct as to make efforts in the direction of improving over-all efficiency almost futile. These inherent difficulties are as follows: (1) The necessarily high temperature at which the gases must be delivered to the stack in order to make it operative. (2) The great temperature difference incidental to the reversal of flue gas and air and consequently the large variation in preheated air and fuel delivered to the furnace dur-ing the cycle. (3) The leakages and resistances created by the reversing apparatus and the complicated flues necessary. (4) The inadequate range of control af-forded by the natural draft system, especially under adverse atmospheric conditions.

ONE of the simplest and most easily effected steps toward mechanization and concentrated mining in coal mines is the substitution of transport or room conveyors for the customary tracks in rooms, thus bringing the coal to the cars instead of taking the cars to the coal. As this involves little or no change in the established room and pillar layout, it appeals to the conservative operator who is more or less fearful of changes in system involving the element of roof con-trol. An increasing number of these room conveyors would seem to attest the favorable commercial results secured. Rooms are naturally driven as wide as roof conditions permit, providing maximum tonnage from each room cut. If the rooms are more than 12 to 14 ft. in width the room conveyor is usually set along one rib, a porta-ble face conveyor being set along the face itself and within easy shoveling distance of it, so arranged as to discharge to the transport conveyor. As the room ad-vances the latter is lengthened and the face conveyor moved up laterally. The advantages of this layout are, briefly, low lifts, no shoveling, no waiting for cars. It gives easy shovel-ing conditions and continuous production so long as there is loose coal at the face. Several loaders are usually employed at the face and the room is loaded out several times each shift. In fact, where the rooms are fairly wide, by judicious management, cutting and load-ing may go on simultaneously. Under these conditions, naturally, the face conveyor plays an important part as it is the appliance on which the coal is actually loaded. Someone has aptly stated that the loading is a question of "foot pounds," which is an appealing way to put it, for it is the number of pounds to be moved by the number of feet which measures the work to be done. It can easily be seen that the design of the face con-veyor is a matter of importance. It might be an im-perfect target for the shovel or of an awkward shape and height, and so involve extra effort on the part of the loader, tiring him when kept up continuously and at the same time slowing up his shoveling speed.

A HIGHLY successful joint conference on coal-mine transportation was held at Pittsburgh on Oct. 20 by the Pittsburgh Section of the American Insti-tute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and Mining Section of the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsyl-vania. C. E. Lesher, executive vice-president of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., presided over 215 members and others in the morning and Graham Bright, sales en-gineer with the Mine Safety Appliances Co., presided over about 180 in the afternoon. There were four prepared papers and much discussion, as well as a good luncheon between the sessions. Mechanical loading in the Pittsburgh district was discussed by L. E. Young, production vice-president of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. More companies in this district are using loading machines, more types of machines are being tried, and more coal is being mined by them than heretofore. The draw-slate above the Pittsburgh seam is the main problem; but devices for supporting and moving draw-slate are being tested. Except in two mines, the slate is being taken down. The fundamentals of the machines are similar, but the electrical drive and other parts have been improved. The problem is to recover or move as much coal as possible without hand labor. Methods of cleaning coal must be improved to meet the new methods of loading. The Pittsburgh Coal Co. has ten Joy machines and others are under order, a Myers-Whaley machine, Jeffrey conveyors, and Eichoff conveyors. The last mentioned are used in entries and other conveyors in rooms. At Montour No. 10 mine, one Joy machine is worked in rooms and one in entries.

THE fall meeting of the Petroleum Division at Fort Worth, Texas, Oct. 19 and 20, attracted even a larger number of members and guests than had been expected. Over three hundred registered the first day though the attendance and interest in the program was so keen that it was necessary to begin technical sessions without. waiting for registration. Members were present from as far away as Venezuela and while the larger attendance was from the Mid-Continent and Texas fields, California and the eastern states were represented by influential delegations. One pleasing feature of the meeting was the presence of a number of the older executives of the oil industry who evi-dently have come to realize the importance of the work the Division is doing in advancing technology. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Production Engineering section of the Division. E. 0. Bennett, chief production engineer for the Marland Oil Co. of Texas, and chairman of the Fort Worth Sec-tion. of the A.I.M.E., served as general chairman. J. B. Umpleby, president of the Petroleum Reclamation Co. and vice-chairman of the. Division was in charge of. the program with a special committee in charge of the technical sessions, of which A. C. Rubel of the Union Oil Co. was chairman. The sessions were held in the ball room of the Texas Hotel, which also served as general headquarters. The Wednesday morning session was devoted to the air-gas lift, John M. Lovejoy, chairman of the Division, presiding. The first paper, on the "Principles Under-lying the Air-Gas Lift." by J. 0. Lewis, was presented by R. R. Brandenthaler and discussed by Messrs. Love-joy and Millikan. Mr. Brandenthaler's own paper on the "Effect of Gas Lift on Physical Properties of Oil" followed and was discussed by Messrs. Umpleby, Walker, Mills, Bennett, Williams and Van der Gracht, the dis-cussion turning mainly on what is known and what unknown regarding oxidation of oil under various con-ditions. The third paper of the morning, "Handling Recirculated Gas," by R. D. Gibbs, was presented by Mr. Taylor. The discussion that followed was general and brought out a large amount of data on the costs and results of compression versus, absorption in total gasoline recovery from gas. The next group of papers dealt with "Mechanical Installations of Air-Gas Lift," the first by E. V. Foran on the Texas district outside the Gulf Coast, the second by L. L. Brundred on the Gulf Coast, the third on Kansas and Oklahoma other than Seminole by R. W. Bond, the fourth on Seminole by C. R. Swartz, and the fifth relating to California by H. C. Miller. Some of these were read by title in order to give more time for discussion which was active and participated in by. Mills, Griswold and others.
