The continuous process of lead refining as at present operated at the Port Piric plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Ltd. was a development from investigations conducted in connection with the ordinary Parkes desilverizing process. It is not proposed here to discuss the theoretical considerations involved in continuous desilverizing because this aspect has already been dealt with in previous publications.1 Continuous Softening Process For economical desilverization of lead bullion, the bullion must first be subjected to refining processes for the removal of such impurities as copper, sulphur, arsenic, antimony and tin. This refining is effected by first drossing to remove copper and sulphur and then preferentially oxidizing the arsenic, antimony and tin from the bullion in the softening process. The theoretical basis of the continuous softening process is illustrated by the portion of the Pb-Sb-O ternary equilibrium diagram shown in Fig. 1. Under conditions of complete liquefaction, metal of the composition of softened bullion is in equilibrium with an oxide slag containing about 9 per cent antimony. In practice, of course, arsenic also is always present, and while the 0Pb-Sb-As-O quaternary system has not been worked out in detail, it has been found that in softening drossed smelter bullion of the composition produced at Port Pirie, arsenic is always reduced to 0.001 per cent or less when the antimony in the bullion is reduced to a satisfactory figure. In the operation of the continuous softening process, a two-phase system of a bullion low in arsenic and antimony and an oxide slag relatively high in those components exists in equilibrium. To this system is added continuously a bullion containing 0.2 per cent As and 0.8 per

THE presence of tellurium in copper and, by inference, in copper alloys, has been considered seriously detrimental and has been avoided. In particular, very small amounts of tellurium have been found to produce red-shortness, although the effects on cold-working and ordinary physical and mechanical properties have not been known so definitely. References in the literature are few, but as long ago as 1881, Egleston1 reported that 0.083 per cent tellurium in fire-refined copper rendered the copper red-short and therefore worthless for hot-rolling. In hot-rolling copper cakes containing this amount of tellurium, he found that fine cracks appeared in the cakes on the first pass through the rolls, the cracks opening further in successive passes. When cold, the metal was said to be tough and malleable. A few years ago, during the course of an investigation in our laboratory on copper-base alloys, it was found that tellurium-bearing alloys could be machined much more freely than similar alloys not containing tellurium. The study was pursued further in this direction, and considerable data were obtained, which indicated that certain tellurium-bearing alloys might have properties of commercial interest. The work eventually led to patent protection,2 a wide range of tellurium-bearing copper-base alloys being covered. This article presents results obtained on the effect of tellurium on the. mechanical properties of three copper-base alloys: commercial bronze (90 Cu, 10 Zn), 1.5 per cent tin bronze (98.5 Cu, 1.5 Sn), and silicon bronze (96 Cu, 3Si, 1 Zn).

This paper discusses the design of small head frames that will fill the needs of prospectors and small operators whose operations are conducted through shafts. The head frames considered were designed to handle relatively small tonnages. It was assumed that the shafts in which buckets are used would not exceed 300 feet in depth and that not over 60 tons of rock would be hoisted, in, 14 hours. In the design of the larger head frames, a hoisting capacity of about 250 tons per 6 hours from a depth of 300 to 500 feet was assumed. Under these conditions, hoisting speed, rate of acceleration, and weight of rope have a negligible effect on the head frame design and, therefore, have been ignored in the following, discussion. Because timber is relatively cheap and easily obtained in most mining areas, the discussion has been confined to timber construction.

IT has long been recognized that it would be highly desirable to be able to predict the temperatures at various points in a burning fuel bed and their variations with changes of the properties of the fuel and the rate of air supply. Experimental investigations of fuel-bed tempera-tures1-4 have not been lacking, but the absence of any theoretical back-ground has made it impossible to use the results of these tests as a basis for prediction, except in a very general way. A mathematical analysis5, based on a somewhat simplified theory of the distribution of heat in a, fuel bed, has recently been completed by the author. Even though numerical values of some of the coefficients are not. known, the calcula-tions result in some conclusions of general significance. Thus, for example, it appears that when the temperatures throughout the fuel bed can be calculated, the rate at which ignition of the fuel by underfeed action can be maintained can also be calculated. The uncertainty concerning the values of the coefficients referred to above is a serious limitation on the use of that method. The following paper presents a discussion of these coefficients and includes estimates of their values based on the data now available. A brief description of the theory on which the analysis is based, and some results of the calculations showing their degree of agreement with experimental results, are presented by way of introduction to the discussion of, the coefficients. AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2). PROSPECTING Two methods of prospecting are used in this district: (1) test pits, (2) churn-drilling. Usually there is certain quite definite information on an area to be prospected; some of the indications are float ore suck as small gravel or small and large boulders known as "dornicks” scattered over the surface, and ore exposed by erosion in gulleys and ravines, which have cut or eroded through the overburden. Often these natural erosions furnish an indication of the thickness of the ore and to some extent of the area of the ore body. Deposits of brown ore are very irregular both in thickness and extent. Deposits are often lens-shaped or long narrow leads, some of which may be parallel and separated from one another by sand, clay or gravel. The bottom-the footwall-is also very irregular. This footwall is usually lime clay-disintegrated limestone, locally called "white horse," which usually is found at a depth of 6 in. to 20 ft. overlying the limestone. At some places sand and gravel is found under the ore instead of clay. No ore is found under the lime clay, although often the ore has sunk or slumped and is found in the upper portion of this clay, as at some of the Sloss workings at Russellville. The origin of these ores has been discussed by Major E. C. Eckel and Dr. E. F. Burchard in U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 400, and recently the latter has done further work on ores in the Russellville district, of which reports undoubtedly will be published.

Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County, Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals and investigations of their chemical and physical properties. The coal represented by the sample from Weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures When placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the gas from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld. County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.

THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civilization as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the [ ] commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported. THE "slot" system of mining in use at the Golden Queen mine, Mojave, Calif., does not involve any new mining methods. It is, however, a new combination and adaptation of several stoping systems in common practice. The first plans for stoping operations at the Golden Queen mine called for ordinary shrinkage stopes. The hanging wall of the vein, where exposed, is a very hard felsite with a dip varying from 50º to 70º. The vein itself is quartz, shattered and fractured enough to make it easy to drill and blast to a clean hanging wall. There is no well defined footwall. The footwall limits had to be determined by assays as the metal content faded out into the felsite. Two shrinkage stopes, each approximately 200 ft. long, were laid out and started on the 200-ft. level. One of these stopes, varying in width from 8 to 18 ft., was carried on up to the top limits of the ore, approximately 120 ft., without a break in the operation. The shrinkage system proved entirely satisfactory and low costs resulted from this operation. In the final drawing of this stope, two timbermen followed down on the ore, scaling the hanging wall clean of small fragments and placing an occasional long stull from foot to hanging wall where it was deemed necessary. Few such stulls, however, were required. The hanging wall stood up very well until the stope was entirely emptied of ore. Waste fill was then put into the stope by the glory-hole method, through a waste raise that had previously been run to surface from the middle of the stope. The second shrinkage stope ran into difficulties about 35 ft. above the sill floor. Up to this point the maximum width of the ore had been about 15 ft. The ore suddenly widened into the footwall to a distance of 40 ft. in the north end of the stope. In extending the stoping operations over this width, it was soon found that the vein material would not arch and support itself. Drilling in this end of the stope was then entirely too hazardous, and all operations were stopped. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines describing; gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the, United States. These papers are designed to dissemminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole; on the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and. study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the mining and primary crushing methods employed at the plant of the Ebsary Gypsum Co., Inc., Wheatland, Monroe County, N. Y. This company is capable of maintaining a maximum yearly production of 220,000 tons of crushed gypsum, thereby ranking as one of the largest gypsum operators of the State. The methods and practices employed typify the standard methods followed by gypsum producers in western Now York State, The bed of gypsum mined lies only 35 feet beneath the surface and is above average thickness for this vicinity.

THE Geology Department of the. University of British Columbia has undertaken the task of examining the ores from as many as possible of the gold mines of British Columbia. The object of this work is two-fold. First, it is known that detailed mineralographic studies are useful in attacking ore-dressing problems, and these studies are intended to be helpful to mill operators. Second, it is hoped that mineralogical and mineralographical studies will prove useful adjuncts to those of lithology and structure in throwing more light on problems related to the origin of the deposits. The paper shows that gold, for all practical purposes, is not present in an ore mineral in solid solution nor as a eutectic with any mineral; if the latter were true the gold particles would be distributed equally throughout that mineral. The gold occurs either as native gold or as a gold-silver telluride and is not distributed regularly through any mineral or minerals: The relationship between the gold or gold-bearing telluride and the associated minerals affords a means of classification that is not only simple but also appears to be directly related to the geological nature of the deposit, which may be summarized as follows: 1. Disseminated Gold Type. ;-Precious minerals in extremely small grains, which are distributed without regard to grain size, fractures or grain boundaries: (1) Hedley variety-gold in native form; (2) Surf Point variety-gold predominantly as telluride. 2. Veining Gold Type.-Precious minerals in grains of various sizes, which occur mainly along fractures and grain boundaries: (1) Cariboo gold quartz-gold in native form. (2) Waneta variety-gold as telluride.

Numerous contradictory statements have been made in the past regarding the importance of the seasonal influence of demand for motor fuel on prices of oil securities. It has often been said that the time to buy oil securities is in the spring, or just prior to the heavy consuming season for gasoline. The fallacy of this argument is brought out in the following paragraphs. Seasonality of Oil-security Prices The indexes used in this paper as indicators of prices of oil securities and general industrials are those compiled by Standard Statistics Co. The oil producing and refining stock index includes 14 representative petroleum companies, while the all-industrials index is made up of 347 issues. All figures are stated as relatives, with 1926 = 100. The primary basis of the index, and one that gives a good weighting of the relative importance of the company within the industry, is the total market value of the stock issue outstanding; i.e., the market price times the number of shares outstanding. Adjustments are made for the addition or elimination of issues from the group index, for stock dividends, split-ups, stock rights, et cetera. At the present time the oil producing and refining index includes the following companies: Atlantic Refining Co., Consolidated Oil Corporation, Continental Oil Co., Gulf Oil Corporation, Humble Oil & Refining Co., Ohio Oil Co., Royal Dutch Co., Shell Union Oil Corporation, Socony-Vacuum Oil Co., Standard Oil Company of California, Standard Oil Co. (Indiana), Standard Oil Co. (New Jersey), Texas Corporation, Union Oil Company of California. In calculating the seasonal for oil-security prices several periods have been selected as indicat,ive of major changes in the industry, as follows: 1. 1918 through 1936. This gives an over-all picture of the industry during the motor-vehicle, motor-fuel era. 2. 1927 through 1936. This period includes the control stages, both voluntary and coercive. 3. 1927 to September, 1933. This is the pre-code period of control.

MR. T. L. McCALL: Planning ahead in coal-mining is essential, but the question may be raised, just how far ahead can we plan. You can overdo it: chat is, you can get in a rut. Never let planning get a hold on you to chat extent. You must be prepared to deal intelligently with any new conditions that arise, and to apply new discoveries. It may become necessary to abandon ? .your plan, make the best you can of the ground you have developed, and start again, with a new plan. So far as the submarine workings of the Dominion Steel and Coal Company are concerned, we cannot know definitely what lies ahead of us under the sea: we must ?base our tentative plans on assumptions, and, as we meet changing conditions, we must change our plans. In the case of inland mines it is possible to bore in advance, and consequently it is generally possible to set out your plans in advance, block out a section of the mine, and develop to obtain a uniform product for a whole year, or perhaps even longer. MR. J. B. MORROW: While planning in coal mining, we must bear in mind chat the consumer also is planning ahead. Some people will tell you that, in ten years time, the demand is going to be all for pulverized co al; others believe that the field for such fuel is limited. Needless to state, planning for a pulverized-coal market is quite a different matter to planning for a general grade, ore stoker, market. In planning, therefore, our endeavour must be to keep a jump ahead of the work being undertaken by the anthracite producers. This year, they are spending about two million dollars-money contributed, not by the Government, but by the industry itself-in the study and promotion of new and improved ways of burning anthracite. For example, they are perfecting small hot-water heaters, and one they have brought out weighs only about ten pounds. I feel that research of this type must be regarded as an essential part of planning in coal mining. We, in the soft-coal industry, are also planning types of more efficient burning equipment and doing other investigational work.

THE bituminous sand of northern Alberta has already an extensive literature, and most of the reports dealing with the subject are still available (see Selected Bibliography at end of paper). A phenomenon so striking and, as regards its extent, so unique, as the deposit in the vicinity of McMurray settlement could not fail to attract the notice of the early explorers, and we find references to it as far back as the latter part of the eighteenth century. However, scarcely a thought had been bestowed upon the possible economic value of minerals in the the remote northern parts of Canada before the second decade of the present century, and practically no detailed mapping had been done north of the town of Athabaska. The late Wm. Ogilvie made a track survey of Athabaska river in 1884, and surveys of certain lines-including the 23rd base line-had been completed by 1911. Between this base line and lake Athabaska, nothing had been attempted. Actually, no definite information at all was available regarding the character and extent of the bituminous sand when, in the earl y summer of 1913, a reconnaissance party set out from Athabaska for McMurray. At that period, the journey was made in summer by scow or canoe. No telegraph line had been laid, and a casual mail service by canoe or dog team once in three months formed the only means of communication with the outside world. The investigation has begun by the Mines Branch was continued during several subsequent years. The sand deposits were studied and sampled, the bi rumen was extracted from the sand and studied chemically and physically, and the economic significance of the deposit was given exhaustive study.

The work of the mining division is divided between seven sections, each in charge of a supervising engineer, as follows: 1. Metal-mining methods section, the supervising engineer of which is also supervising engineer of the Southwest Experiment Station at Tucson, Ariz. 2. Metal-mining research section. 3. Nonmetal minim section. 4. Coal-mining section. 5. Mine-ventilation section. 6. Mineral-industries survey section. 7. Electrical section. The names of the sections indicate broadly the fields covered by each, and in the following pages the objectives and type of work of each section will be summarized briefly and the active problems listed. The work done during the calendar year 1936 will also be summarized.

It is estimated that during 1936 world consumption of petroleum, its products and related fuels reached an all-time peak of 1,757,778,000 bbl., an increase of 143,000,000 bbl. over 1935. As indicated in Table 1, world output of petroleum and related fuels exceeded demand by 92,510,000 bbl. during the year, as compared to an excess output of 88,000,000 bbl. during 1935. Production within the United States exceeded domestic demand by approximately 51,000,-000 bbl. in 1936, as compared to an excess output of 53,000,000 bbl. in the previous year. Outside the United States, production exceeded demand by 41,510,000 bbl. in 1936 and by 35,000,000 bbl. in 1935, indicating that foreign output is making no progress toward curtailment in line with demand. Table 1 also combines excess production in the United States with the favorable balance of exports over imports, showing that stocks in the United States were reduced by 23,400,000 bbl. in 1936, as compared to 22,447,000 bbl. in the previous year. In the rest of the world, excess output over demand combined with the excess of imports over exports from the United States indicates an unfavorable balance of approximately

This paper, describing the mining and reduction methods and costs at the Oceanic quicksilver mine, is one of a series of similar reports being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on various mines in the United states. The property, which is owned and operated by the Anglo American Mining Corporation, Ltd., is 5 miles east of Cambria, San Luis Obispo County, Calif. It lies in a region of steep hills and sharply incised canyons on the west slope of the Santa Lucia Range at an elevation of about 500 feet above sea level. The climate is ideal for living and operating conditions. A 40-mile paved highway connects the mine with San Luis Obispo, the nearest convenient railroad town.

MR.]. G. TRAILL: My only excuse for contributing to the discussion on Mr. Hall's interesting paper is that I had the good fortune to be employed at Noranda during those romantic years, 1927 and 1928, when construction was at its height. The mine was in course of being rapidly prepared and brought into production, and the initial difficulties in crushing-plant and smelter were being met and overcome. They were stirring days, and perhaps those members who were with the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress in 1927 sensed the atmosphere of excitement and activity that prevailed. Early History. Noranda must surely possess some of the most remarkable ore-bodies known to mining men, and the story of their development is pure romance. Ed. Horne's faith in the property, and the persistence of Thomson and Chadbourne, were richly rewarded in the end, but only after some very thin times had been experienced. In those early days access to the district was by the Kenojevis river and various portages to Osisko lake, on the shores of which the mine and smelter and the town of Noranda now stand. But all the early work was done on the Chadbourne claims, more than a mile to the west; through the b~sh. I have read a log of the events of that period, and through the whole tale of hard work, discouraging developments, occasional shortages of food, and constant danger from forest fires, can be read the faith and persistence of the men in charge. The Chadbourne ore was of that well-known type which, though just too low-grade to pay (with gold at $20 per ounce), is yet sufficiently encouraging to lead one on in the hope of striking something better. It was only as a last resort that work on the Chadbourne claims was suspended and a diamond drill brought to the gossan-covered hill beside the lake. The diamond-driller told me his version (it may be exaggerated) of how the position and direction of the first hole were decided on. He was told, "You might as well set up your drill here, and drill in, say, that direction". I believe that the first hole went through the richest ore ever found at Noranda. After the drill had gone through about 150 feet of solid sulphide ore running 17 per cent copper and 4 dwt. of gold per ton, it passed into barren rock, but the diamond-driller expressed the opinion (I wonder how he knew)) that the hole would come into ore again before long.
