In this period of generally increasing taxes of various kinds, one hears less complaint by mining companies about the high cost of workmen's accident compensation than was the case a few years ago, the reason perhaps being that other and more pressing phases of the tax problem now over shadow the heavy expenditures for compensation premiums which a few years ago were considered a severe burden on the mining industry. Nevertheless, the financial expenditures of the mining industry in higher compensation benefits and hospitalization or in higher premium rates, or both, instead of being less have actually increased in many States in the past year. In the spring of 1937, proposals for increased benefits to injured employees in compensation, hospitalization, or medical aid were actively before legislatures in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and possibly other States. In some cases, the proposed increases in benefits were so much greater than expenditures for similar items in the past that premium rates per $100 of payroll would almost certainly rise sharply. At this same time, occupational-disease-compensation coverage also was under consideration by legislatures in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, and Washington. Sooner or later (and probably within the next few years) occupational-disease compensation will be accorded practically as wide recognition as accident compensation receives at present, and, unquestionably, mining in all of its branches will be affected more or less drastically. Hence, the present outlook is that the mining industry, in company with practically all other industrial activities, will be confronted by materially higher compensation costs than those of the past or the present, to which rather violent exception has been taken, at least in some States and at some times.

"Reflector button signs similar to those used to attract the attention of motorists on the public highways at night are now being used to good advantage by a few mining companies in underground workings for danger, warning, direction, and safety signs and signals. Most safety signs and signals used in underground mining are of the electric light painted-board, or enameled or porcelain metal-plate,type, all of which have good features as well as some disadvantages; among the disadvantages are: The filament of electric incandescent lamps is prone to ""burn out"" occasionally anti usually the lamps are not replaced promptly; painted-board and enameled or porcelain metal-plate signs can be seen only a short distance and often are ""passed up"" unintentionally by employees, consequently these signs do not always serve the purposes intended and may be the cause of injury or death through failure to warn the men of danger.The advantage of using reflector button signs in mines or underground workings is that the cap lamps or headlights with which employees and locomotives generally are equipped, if directed at these buttons will reflect the light back to its source, and if they are arranged to spell words of warning or direction, or if suitable symbols are used, they are discernible and can be read at a distance of several hundred feet. The distance the light is reflected depends largely on the color of the buttons used. The reflector buttons also in many instances can be used to good advantage in conjunction with other methods previously mentioned.Several types of reflector buttons are available, among them the flat-lens type with mirrored metallic foil or plate back, the facet-cut-lens type with a mirrored metallic foil or plate back, and a type with a hemispherical smooth lens with a parabolic mirrored metal back. Lenses for the different types are available in several colors. Crystal, amber, red, and green are the colors of the buttons used to the greatest extent in underground signs up to the present time. These buttons may be had in different sizes, also.It has been observed that crystal-colored buttons reflect light the greatest distance (about 1,000 feet) and red-colored buttons the least (about 500 feet); reflection from green and amber colors ranges somewhere between the red and crystal colors in distance.Reflector buttons for underground use should be designed to reflect light a maximum distance; they should be made of materials that resist oxidation and corrosion, especially of the mirrored backs, and should be relatively free of protruding parts or projections that will collect dust.Reflector buttons approximately 3/14 inch in diameter seem best suited for underground use in general because fewer reflector units are required for a signal of given size."

"INTRODUCTION Sulphuric acid of various concentrations has long been used as a reagent in the determination of olefins and aromatics in hydrocarbon oils 4 such as gasoline, kerosene, and neutral oils from coal—tar distillates. Despite its long use, however, there is no general agreement as to optimum conditions and concentration of acid, and numerous methods and modifications have been recommended. In most cases, treatment of the neutral oil with 60 to 90 percent sulphuric acid, followed by distillation to the original endpoint to remove olefin polymers, is recommended for the estimation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The distillate thus obtained is taken as olefin—free oil and used in later stages of the anlysis. Aromatic hydrocarbons generally are determined in the olefin—free oil by suphonation with more concentrated acid (96 to 100 percent and fuming sulphuric acid are recommended), the hydrocarbons not attacked and removed as water—soluble sulphonic acids being considered as saturated hydrocarbons. In some cases the saturates are examined further by differentiatingbetween cyclic (naphthenes) and acyclic hydrocarbons (paraffins). Generally this is achieved by physical methods, although strong sulphuric acid is known to react preferentially with some types of saturated hydrocarbons,It was the purpose of the present work to make a general study of this type of analysis and to investigate the reactions of hydrocarbons under conditions often used in analyses that employ sulphuric acid reagents. Since previous work is not in good agreement, the optimum concentrations of acid for the different stages of the analysis were determined. Several sulphuric acid methods previously recommended and new modifications were compared, two synthetic solutions being used as the reference oil. The results obtained are presented below under separate headings."

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36 3/. The second resort gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 1936 4/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-37 5/.This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others."

One phase of the Bureau of Minest work in the field of health and safety is the promotion of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respir atory protective devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of what it considers the minimum re- quirements for oxygen breathing-apparatus,3 gas masks, hose masks,5/ and mechanical filter-respirators (a schedule of requirements for hose- type supplied-air respirators is being prepared). Approval of oxygen breathing-apparatus is given by the Safety Division; approval of other types of respiratory equipment is given by the Health Division, both divisions being in the Health and Safety Branch, Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau for approval under the requirements of these schedules. As a prerequisite to submitting a device for approval, the Bureau requires a statement that the device is completely developed and of the design and material that the manufacturer believes suitable for a finished marketable device; that the device has been

Hazards in connection with the use of compressed-air jets for ventilating gassy mines are given little consideration by most mine officials largely because compressed air is considered the safest means of transmitting power for operating various types of mining machinery, and the inherent dangers in its use for this purpose are virtually negligible . The installation of compressed-air lines in coal mines leads to the utilization of compressed air for ventilating working places , with the result that , although the primary ventilation systems may be adequate to meet existing needs , proper conduction of normal ventilation has been neglected , so the working faces receive only a small amount ofthe total air circulated through the mine . Reliance in part on compressed air or other auxiliary means for ventilation is always attended by danger that gas will accumulate , due to intermittent operation , and the tendency is to operate auxiliary schemes only. during the working shift ( or possibly only part of the shift ) and to dispense with them during off- shifts or at times during the working shift when gas may accumulate because of lack of ventilation . When the men come on shift the auxiliary ventilating device often may be started without a preliminary examination of the working place , or .. the examination may be made sometime before the oncoming shift arrives , the gas being allowed to accumulate in the meantime. This may result in uncontrolled movement of a body of gas if proper precautions are not taken . Several mine explosions have been caused by the movement of a known body of gas by compressed air into the haulageway, where it was ignited by an arc from a passing locomotive . This danger is more pronounced where supervision is lax .

"Production of explosives in the United States during the calendar year 1936, as represented by reports of sales by manufacturing companies, totaled 391,604,500 pounds, an increase of 27 percent over the amount produced during 1935. This quantity included 81,698,375 pounds of black blasting powder (granular and pellet), 262,047,106 pounds of high explosives other than permissibles, and 47,859,019 pounds of permissible 5/ explosives.The manufacturers' reports to the Bureau of Mines classify the sales of explosives according to five main classes of work in connection with which the explosives were used.Coal mines used 87 percent of the total amount of black blasting powder sold, bituminous-coal mines 79 percent, and anthracite mines 8 percent; coal mines also consumed 98 percent of all permissible explosives and 9 percent of the high explosives other than permissibles. The coal-mining industry consumed 16 percent more explosives in 1936 than in the preceding year, the increase at bituminous mines being 21 percent and that at anthracite mines 4 percent.Metal mines used 29 percent of the high explosives other than permissibles and less than 1 percent of the black blasting powder and permissible explosives. The total quantity of the three classes of explosives used in metal mining in 1936 was 36 percent more than the quantity so used in 1935."

Potash is one of the principal foods and is necessary for the growth of most vegetables, grains, and fruits. For many years, this country depended entirely upon foreign sources for its supply of potassium compounds. However, during the last 15 years the domestic production of potash has gradually increased, as shown in table 1. 7/ Imports now supply only half of the American market. In 1936, the equivalent of 207,000 tons of K20 was imported, and 210,000 tons was produced domestically. In 1935, domestic consumption was approximately 420,000 tons of potash, a 57 percent increase over that for 1934 and surpassing previous peaks of 1928 and 1930.

Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals 4/ and investigations of their chemical and physical properties. 5/ The coal represented by the sample from Weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures when placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the as from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.

"In an earlier consideration of the vapor pressure of iron 3/ it was found necessary to estimate the specific heat of gaseous iron to write satisfactory free-energy-of-vaporization equations for the several forms of iron. That the specific heat of gaseous iron will exceed greatly the classical value of Cp = 4.967 calories per gram-mole per degree is evident from even a cursory Lamination of its spectrum. The two lowest energy states are separated by only 416 cm-1, which is small enough so that the second state is effective, theoretically, at below room temperature. Such phenomena are by no means uncommon, but, while they have been recognized with substances that ordinarily are encountered as gases, classical gaseous specific--heat values still are used, often without question, for the vapors of metals and other elements that are solids under ordinary conditions. The following calculations for iron and copper gases are presented to illustrate the sort of deviations from classical values that are encountered with metal gases.The methods employed in calculating from spectroscopic data of thermodynamic quantities such as specific heat, entropy, and free energy have been described, in detail by Giauque 4/ and others. These will be briefly reviewed here. It is customary to separate the translational energy of a molecule from the rotational, vibrational, and electronic energies. In the case of monatomic gases, only translational and electronic Energies are involved. The classical expression for the specific heat of a mona¬tomic gas, Cp = 4.967, deals only with energy stored in the molecule as translational energy and consequently is valid only in temperature ranges in which no appreciable number of molecules undergoes a change in electronic state."

"In matte smelting of copper it has been established that the sulphpr present will combine with copper as long as the latter is present, and that thereafter it will combine with iron. The Cu-Fe ratio in the matte is determined by the Cu-S ratio, presumably owing to the much greater affinity of copper for sulphur or, expressed thermodynamically, the greater stability of copper sulphide in contact with silicate slag. Now, the work of Fournet and of Schütz, which is quoted in many elementary metallurgical texts, indicates that manganese ranks ahead of copper in its affinity for sulphur. Hence, we might expect that manganese could be concentrated from its admixture with iron. Compounds by matte smelting, and Rotts / has patented such a process. This greater affinity of manganese or sulphur is used to advantage in iron metallurgy, also, in which it is well-known that sulphur will combine with manganese and separate from metallic iron as manganese sulphide. Manganese sulphide,however, is quite soluble in silicate slags. 5/ The loss of manganese in slag in any attempted matte smelting is therefore great.If this solubility of manganese sulphide is slag is a physical one and the reaction MnO + FeS MnS + FeOIs substantially complete, then it might be expected that the addition of copper sulphide, which is almost entirety insoluble in slag, would serve to extract the manganese sulphide with the formation of a manganese-copper matte on the other hand, if an equilibrium exists in the above reaction, a copper sulphide layer would displace that equilibrium in one direction or the other, according to whether iron sulphide or manganese sulphide were more soluble in the matter layer."

THE Workmen's Compensation Ace defines Silicosis as "a fibrocic condition of the lungs caused by the inhalation of silica dust sufficient co produce a lessened capacity for work". This fibrocic condition muse exhibit a specific appearance in the X-ray picture of the chest-an appearance which is not characteristic of several lung conditions which can cause lessened capacity for work and which are not due co silicosis. The layman is sufficiently familiar with this subject co know chat, as far as our knowledge goes, quartz is one of the principal objectionable factors in the production of this condition. He should also know that silicosis respects neither geographical nor industrial boundaries. It is as much a factor in some industrial processes (e.g. foundry work, sandblasting) as it is in mines handling ores containing quartz. Its development co a recognizable stage is usually a matter of many years. As yet, its cure is unknown. Its prevention is possible in varying degrees. The layman should also know that the development of fibrosis may be accelerated by breathing in, or living in, any atmosphere containing dust. Few normal adults, particularly those above a certain age, have clear lungs, and fibrosis in varying degrees is noted in the farmer, the steel worker, the clerk, and many others in varied occupations. It is not restricted to miners. Medical and industrial journals, and at times the press, are crammed with data pertaining to this subject, much of which is misinformation. This is particularly true of certain !laces where the preventive and compensation measures for the good o those earning their livelihood in an industry in which silicosis may be contracted are not so far advanced as in our own Province. A great many of these publishings are alarming to the layman. They leave him with the impression that he is taking his life in his hands if he elects to work underground, particularly in a gold mine-that he has at once sold his heritage of health and chat sooner or later he will succumb to the ravages of this ailment. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Actually, under present conditions in Ontario mines, a very small percentage of the men employed ever become impaired by silicosis to the extent chat they must withdraw from the industry. I propose to tell you briefly something of this subject as it affects our mines.

The Institute of Metals Division Lecture in 1936, given by R. F. Mehl, on diffusion in solid metals1, was introduced with the statement that "the phenomena of diffusion are intimately related to many basic problems of the metallic state, but in addition to this the process of diffusion is of first importance practically." In view of the scope of that lecture, it does not seem necessary to review the importance, history or present status of diffusion problems. One aspect of the subject of diffusion that has received little attention became of some immediate importance in the course of a study on segregation. When a solid solution alloy freezes, the familiar mechanism of solidification requires that the first nuclei formed be low in solute concentration, with a resultant normal segregation or coring effect during freezing. Theoretically, musion of solute atoms during solidification should result in a homogeneous solid solution. Actually, of course, it is impossible in most binary alloys to obtain a cooling rate that will permit diffusion to eliminate coring in the freezing dendrites. For a given alloy, the extent of diffusion attained up to the point of final solidification will determine the degree of enrichment in solute atoms of the final liquid phase. The flow of this liquid into dendritic contraction channels and the solute concentration of the liquid seem to be the determining factors as to whether the final gross segregation is normal, inverse or absent. The purpose of the present study of diffusion was to determine to some extent the separate diffusion rates of copper and magnesium into pure aluminum with a view to clarifying previous results on segregation in these alloys; i.e., the fact that under similar freezing conditions aluminum-copper alloys segregate inversely and aluminum-magnesium alloys segregate normally. Of concomitant interest were the questions of the homogenization times required for segregated ingots or partially melted, i.e., "burnt," structures, and the solution heat-treatment times required for cast, hardenable aluminum-copper and aluminum-magnesium alloys, for worked and annealed structures, and so forth.

IT WAS in June, 1889, that I was first admitted to the society of educated men. The admission ticket had been signed, on the recommendation of my old and beloved teacher, Bobby Richards, by General Francis A. Walker at the time President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an institution familiarly known as M. I. T. I immediately proceeded to take advantage of that privilege by departing for Steelton, Pennsylvania, where I understood I was eagerly awaited by the educated officials of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. I was some. what disappointed at the casualness of my reception and at being tucked away in that preserve closet of steel works known as the chemical laboratory. Oil-field activities in Oklahoma made 1936 the best year since 1930. Approximately 2800 wells were completed, an increase of about 20 per cent over 1935. Purchasers' reports filed with the Corporation Commission showed a total of 200,240,252 bbl. of oil purchased from leases in 1936. The assembly of a complete table of the oil fields of the state was not achieved, as many of the early records of operators and pipe-line companies are not complete, and data for the older fields will perhaps never be fully tabulated. Table 1 includes all of the new fields and most of the important fields of the State of Oklahoma. The outstanding developments of the year were: the discovery of rich Wilcox-sand production in the Moore pool; the spectacular drilling campaign in the Capitol or Mansion extension in the Oklahoma City pool; the surprising extension of the Olympic pool and the Hunton lime zone in the Fitts pool; and the failure to find more Ordovician production in southern Oklahoma. Wildcat discoveries, which were on a par with 1935, resulted in the discovery of such promising pools as Billings-Wilcox, North Bethel, North Earlsboro and North Lucien. The Fitts-Upper Simpson, Edmond, Jesse, Keokuk Falls and South Burbank pools underwent considerable development. Fitts Pool.—The Fitts area in Pontotoc County was greatly extended during the year and was the leader in drilling activity in the state. The producing limits were pushed to the east and north and the development of the Hunton lime horizon was outstanding. In the Upper Simpson zone 162 wells were completed; 137 in the Hunton lime zone and 26 in the Wilcox zone. The Oil Creek zone, a sand body below the Wilcox member, was discovered by the Magnolia-Statler No. 3 well located in the 1/4. 1/4 of sec. 28-2N.-7E. Moore Pool.—The Moore pool, in Cleveland County, which was opened in 1935 by the Sinclair Prairie-Franklin Community No. 1 well, surprised the oil industry when the Sinclair Prairie-Marvel No. 1 well, on Apr. 1, 1936, discovered a rich body of Wilcox sand below the distillate

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has issued publications dealing with the various classes of explosion-proof mining machinery that have been tested and approved as permissible for use in mines having atmospheres that may become inflammable by reason of the inadvertent presence of gas or dust. These publications are confined almost entirely to description of the features contributing directly or indirectly to the prevention of explosion or shock hazards, and are intended to give inspectors, safety engineers, and others already familiar with the general safety requirements more detailed information on the safety features of the design of a particular machine. As a background for papers describing permissible machines and to avoid the necessity of duplicating descriptions of methods of conducting investigations and tests of such machinery, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, was pub¬lished in 1929. Three bulletins giving detailed descriptions of the three most numerous types of machines have been issued, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotive and Power Trucks. The gamma-alpha transformation in iron and iron-rich alloys is of such practical and theoretical importance that many papers have been published upon the subject relating to critical temperatures, transformation rates and accompanying property changes. Although crystallo-graphic studies are of less immediate practical usefulness, the opportunities which these offer to furnish data on the basic atomic movements which characterize the transformation are not to be neglected1. The early work on the crystallography of this transformation has been reviewed in the fourth paper of this series2; since then several important papers have appeared. Our present knowledge may be briefly summarized as follows. Kurdjumow and Sachs, working with a 1.4 per cent carbon steel3, established the orientation relationships subsisting between the face-centered gamma and the metastable tetragonal lattices in freshly quenched martensite, and between the face-centered gamma and the body-centered alpha lattices in tempered martensite. The orientation relationship observed in the latter case may be stated in terms of planes and directions observed to lie parallel in the two lattices: {111} ?//{110}a [110] ?// [111]a (This notation is used throughout as the most descriptive means of expressing the fact that any (111) plane of the gamma phase may be parallel to any (110) plane of the alpha phase, and that a [110] direction in a particular (111)? plane is parallel to a [Ill] direction in the corresponding (110)a plane.) From these relationships the atomic movements that transform the gamma lattice into the alpha may be inferred. This paper constitutes the third progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines. It presents comparative costs of drilling with conventional and detachable bits and describes the operating practice in rock drilling and the reconditioning of drill steel and bits at 10 mines not discussed in previous reports.3/ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report has been prepared with the assistance and cooperation of the officials and staff members at the mines visited. Costs and other data at individual mines were developed and furnished by the operators.

THE study of diamond drill results at the Lake Athabaska property of Athona Mines, Limited, and the co-ordination of information secured, has demanded extensive application of methods for interpreting true conditions, both structurally and from the point of view of ore outlook. This work was in charge of a capable engineer, who, as the result of exhaustive study of the drill cores, has been able to issue maps and plans exceeding the expectations of the majority of engineers and geologists who visited the field during the past summer (1935); that is, having in view the fact that staking of the property had been completed but a few months beforehand and that geological conditions were practically unknown up to the time drilling began in April. The following pages present an outline of the work of the assay and engineering offices in co-ordinating and interpreting the results of the drilling. The writer desires to acknowledge the suggestions offered by A.P. Beavan, geologist and engineer at Athona Mines, whom he assisted during the drilling campaign, and also the co-operation of the drilling contractor's employees. The geological map, mine plans, and forms accompanying the paper are from the Company's engineering office files.
