The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the feasibility of joining refractory metal compounds to each other and to oxide ceramics by a vacuum hot press-diffusion bonding method. Very satisfactory joins were made of ZrC to ZrB2, ZrN to ZrB2, ZrC to ZrN, and of ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 to Al203. Each of these join assemblies contained a mixture layer comprising 50 weight-percent each of the two end compounds. The mixture layer, sandwiched between each end compound, enhanced bonding and smoothed out the thermal expansion gradient between the two end members. Strength and thermal shock tests showed that the join areas of the ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 joins were stronger and more shock resistant than the parent materials. Also included in the joining tests was one each of TiC to TiB2, TiC to TiN, TiB2 to TIN, and TiC to ZrB2 joins. Each of these was well bonded, showing that the vacuum-hot-press method can be used for a variety of systems.

This paper presents the results of studies of the elasticity of some isotropic and anisotropic rock samples based on longitudinal- and shear-wave pulse velocity measurements. Experimental evidence from velocity measurements on isotropic steel samples is also presented to show, within error limits, that any two of the elastic constants required to completely describe the elasticity of an isotropic solid can be obtained from any two of the following four velocity measurements: longitudinal "rod,' "plate," extended medium (infinite medium equivalent), or shear wave. Measurements of three of these velocities in an approximately isotropic basaltic rock sample are used to illustrate this application to this type of rock. For the anisotropic study, a suite of Colorado oil shale samples is used. These rocks exhibited transverse isotropy. The five elastic constants required to completely specify this type of anisotropy are obtained from longitudinal- and shear-wave pulse velocity measurements made in directions parallel, perpen-dicular, and at 45° to the bedding plane. Density, velocity, and elastic modulus relationships among these shales are also given. Duvall 1 has described a method for determining the elastic constants of isotropic and, in two cases, anisotropic rock samples. This method is based on ultrasonic pulse techniques and on resonance-frequency measurements of rock samples in the shape of rods (diamond drill cores). A study has been made of the effect of small additions of bismuth on the activity of zinc in dilute solution in molten tin. Free-energy interactions have previously been determined between zinc and various third elements where the solvents were molten bismuth or molten lead.'-4 In both of these solvents, the activity of zinc exhibits a strong positive deviation from ideal behavior (at 550°C y° for zinc in lead is 11.4 and for zinc in bismuth is 3.0). The present work, using tin as the solvent, is an extension to a case where the positive deviation is considerably diminished (y°Zn at 550°C is 1.63). Several previous investigators have studied the Zn-Sn binary system; however, little data is available in the range below 0.1 mole fraction zinc.5= Previous high-temperature galvanic cell studies in the Sn-Zn-Bi ternary system included the determination by Gluck and Pehlke of interactions in the bismuth-rich corner1 and separate investigations of the central region by Oleari and Fioriani6 and by Ptak and Moser.7 Yokokowa et al.8 conducted Knudsen effusion studies in the central region; however, their experiments at 625°K were conducted somewhat below the present experimental temperature range. Their results indicated an increase in zinc activity with the addition of bismuth. The present series of experiments was conducted in galvanic cells represented as follows: Zn Zn++ in LiCI-KC1 eutectic Zn + Bi in Sn (pure reference (fused salt electrolyte) (molten alloy) standard) The experimental apparatus. a multi-electrode system employing alumina crucibles and contained in a Vycor tube under a helium atmosphere, has been described previously, as have been the experimental procedures, precautions, and the methods of data reduction.1-4,- The experimental measurements were made over the range from 450° to 650°C. Between thirty and forty measurements were made in each run. The linearity of the electromotive force vs temperature relations was verified by linear regression techniques. The correlation coefficients exceeded 0.99. The experimental results summarized in Table I include the interpolated electromotive force at 550°C and the temperature dependence of electromotive force. Only results from stable and consistent cells containing more than 0.025 mole fraction zinc are reported. Attempts to run cells at 0.01 or 0.02 mole fraction zinc were not satisfactory. This is attributed to the closeness of the free energies of formation of the chlorides of tin and zinc. Calculations employing Wagner and Werner's criteria for displacement reactions10 indicated that reduction of the zinc content to 0.01 mole fraction places the cell near the borderline concentration for a 1 pct error in measured potential. The compositions shown in Table I are the actual weighed-in amounts. Previous experience has indicated that compositional changes during the running of a stable cell are negligible.' Over the range of compositions studied for the binary alloys, the activity coefficient of zinc was essentially constant indicating that Henry's law is followed to 0.05 mole fraction zinc. Expressions are obtained for the energy changes associated with the reaction of (a& (111) slip dislocations on intersecting (110)planes in anisotropic bcc metals. An energy criterion for assessing the likelihood of dissociation of the products of such reactions is also presented. It is found that the "burrier reactions" which form a(100) dislocations at the intersection of two active {110) slip planes are more energetically favorable in metals which exhibit a high value of Zener's anisotropy factor, A, than those which have a low value. The results are presented in a form which permits the stacking fault energy to be obtained from a measurement of the separation between par-tials in a dissociated configuration. However, until accurate calculations or measurements of the stacking fault energies involved are available, it is not possible to assess the physical importance of dissociated dislocations. In a recent paper,' the energy changes associated with several types of reactions between two slip dislocations, (a/2)(111){110), in bcc structures were calculated.* Isotropic elasticity and the approxima- tion v = -3- were employed. The purpose of this work is to present calculations of the energy changes for many of the same reactions using anisotropic elasticity. The problem of dissociation of a(100) and a(110) dislocations is also considered, and maximum fault energies for which dissociation will be energetically favorable are calculated for several bcc metals. Two general types of reactions are considered; those for which the reactant (a/2)(111) dislocations have long-range attractive forces and those for which the reverse is true. An example of the former is: (a/2)[lll] + (a/2)[lll]-a[l00] while the latter are typified by: (a/2)[lll] + (a/2)[111] -a[011] Only reactants lying in different slip planes are considered; therefore, the products must lie along (111) or (100) directions, which are the intersection of two {llO} planes. It will be assumed that the reactants and products are infinitely long parallel dislocations, since in this case the energy change associated with the reactions is a maximum.' THEORY The self-energy per unit length of a straight mixed dislocation in an anisotropic medium can be written? where b is the Burgers vector, K is an appropriate combination of the single-crystal elastic constants, and R and ro are, respectively, outer and inner cut-off radii of the elastic solution. The energy given by Eq. [I] does not account for any variation of the core energy with orientation. This could be manifested by an orientation dependence of the core radius or, equivalently, the Peierls width, of the dislocation. However, the energy contribution due to this source is expected to be small, and current models of the dislocation core are not sufficiently accurate to justify such a refinement. It has already been shown that for the isotropic case the energy contributions due to nonzero tractions across the cores of the reactants and products exactly cancel one another in the reaction.' Accordingly, it will be assumed that this contribution to the total energy change in the anisotropic case is small. In the subsequent discussion it is also assumed that the core radii of the reactant and product dislocation are the same and that, where stacking faults are formed, the faulted region is bounded by the centers of the partials. Consequently only changes in elastic energy due to the reactions will be considered. When the dislocation is parallel to either the (111) or the (100) directions, K may be written:375 K = (Ke sin2 a + Ks cos2 a) [2] where K, and Ks are the combination of elastic constants corresponding to an edge and screw dislocation lying along the same direction as the mixed dislocation, and a is the angle between the direction tangent to the dislocation line and the Burgers vector. Eq. [2] should not be confused with the isotropic approximation to the variation in energy with line Orientation.6 It should be noted that the essentially isotropic expression for K is a result of the characteristic symmetry of the (111) and (100) directions and is not, in general, valid for other dislocation directions in anisotropic cubic metals. The energy* change for a reaction in which the re- actant and product dislocations are parallel perfect dislocations can be written: where Ep and E, refer to the self-energies of the products and reactants, respectively. For dislocations parallel to (100) and (111) directions, Eq. [3] becomes:

In previous publications,5 results of single-blow bit tooth impacts on saturated rocks at various stress states were reported. This paper extends these earlier works to include study of bit impact tests on salt water-saturated Berea and Bandera sandstone samples under conditions of elevated confining and pore pressure. During the tests dynamic filtration and deposition of a mud cake were occurring due to the presence of drilling mud in the borehole and a borebole-to-formation pressure differential. Results indicate that saturation of these sandstones with salt water tends to make them weaker than when saturated with nonreactive fluids. Plastic failure often occurs even when extremely high fluid-loss muds are present in the borehole. The failure mode tends toward plasticity with decreasing fluid loss. Brittle failure of sandstones in mud-filled holes is apparently relatively rare. Depending on the stress level, and the associated failure mode, withdrawal of the bit tooth induces a tensile force that seems rather important relative to the quantity of rock removed by vertical tooth impact. INTRODUCTION A vast majority of the oil wells drilled today involve the use of colloidal muds having a measurable mud filtrate loss. It is known from field experience that reduction of the water loss of a mud generally results in a reduction of the penetration rate. This paper describes an investigation of crater formation at simulated bottom-hole pressure conditions for drilling fluids having different water losses. The literature on single bit tooth impact (cratering) at atmospheric conditions is extensive, but only a limited amount of work has been performed at the stress conditions similar to that found in oil wells. Spherical penetrator cratering tests on rocks at hydrostatic pressure were performed by Payne and Chippenda1e.1 Chisel impact studies on limestone with independently varying overburden and borehole pressure and atmospheric pore pressure were reported by Garner, et al.2 Gnirk and Cheatham3 performed "static" penetrator tests on dry rocks at equal overburden and borehole pressures. Podio and Gray4 studied the effect of pore fluid viscosity at atmospheric pore and borehole pressures and varying overburden pressures. Their results illustrated the importance of fluid saturation of the rock. Yang and Gray5 reported single tooth impact tests on saturated rocks at elevated borehole, pore and confining pressures, but with equal pore and borehole pressures. For the work reported in Refs. 4 and 5, filtration across the hole bottom purposely was avoided. Maurer6 has investigated the effect of independently varying pore and borehole pressures at elevated overburden pressures by using a zero water-loss mud in the borehole. His tests were carried out under conditions that allowed independent control of overburden, pore and borehole pressures, but without control of filtration at the hole bottom. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE APPARATUS The single blow chisel impact apparatus used by Garner,2 as modified for this study, is shown in Fig. 1. A cross section of the pressure vessel is shown in Fig. 2. Several pieces of auxiliary equipment were added to the original apparatus in order that the borehole and pore pressure could be applied in a manner analogous to the actual bottom-hole situation. The pore-pressure system included a filtrate volume-measuring transducer and had sufficient surge capacity to allow filtrate to be injected into the sample without significant changes in pore pressure at points remote to the borehole. The borehole-pressure system contained a cross connection to the pore-pressure system so that both systems could be pressured simultaneously. The borehole-pore pressure differential was applied rapidly by the use of a quick and full-opening valve. The operation of this valve triggered two industrial

"The large low-grade Copper Mountain deposit is located in the northern portion of the Gaspé Cooper Mines property. It is approximately 1 mile north of the Needle Mountain deposit. The orebody outlined to date lies in the top 1,000 feet of the Grande Greve formation. Chalcopyrite occurs in association with pyrite and quartz in small veinlets and numerous fractures. The deposit is immediately adjacent and parallel to a quartz-feldspar dyke and may be associated with a nearby porphyry stock. Stratigraphy, alteration and structure appear to have played an important role in ore deposition."

International interest in storage and retrieval of geological data stems from a desire to tap this large and potentially valuable, but little-used resource. The data will be used primarily for development and testing of geological concepts and theory; secondarily as a basis for assessing mineral potential and even individual mineral deposits; thirdly for establishment of world-wide norms averages and standards; and fourthly as a search tool leading to sources of specific data and to repositories of specimens etc. International committee activities are designed to establish acceptable general standards for reference numbering, geographic location, geological terminology, coding etc. ; and to develop progressively the types of data (parameters) that should be recorded in specialized archival files in such fields of world-wide interest as palaeontology, mineral deposits, petrochemistry, stratigraphy, mineralogy, palaeomagnetism, physical geochronology etc. Establishment of world data banks analogous to those in oceanography may come later; for the present we hope to achieve some degree of agreed consistency in national and local data banks throughout the world, and to establish an international index to these banks as first steps in facilitating international exchange. For purposes of this paper, data are defined as facts, reproducibly measured or objectively described.

The roles of the phase diagram and the diffusion and solubility analyses in the selection of sources for the diffusion of zinc into GaAs are discussed. Isothermal sections of- the phase diagram are described at 1000°, 775°, 744°, and 700°. Below 744° the three solid phases, Zn3As2, GaAs, and ZnAsz, may be in equilibrium. In the composition regions where the three solid phases are in equilibrium, the partial pressures of the components do not vary with composition and there is no liquid phase. A diffusion source composition within that region containing 5, 50, and 45 at. pct Ga, As, and Zn was selected to yield reproducible diffusion profiles without surface damage. The 5/50/45 ternary source Provides a significant improvement in the reproducibility and planarity of- the zinc diffusion as compared with other zinc diffusion sources that result from starting with elemental zinc, dilute solutions of zinc in gallium, or various combinations of zinc and arsenic. Several experimental diffision profiles for the 5/50/45 diffusion source have been determined. The profiles are very steep in the region of the junction and produce devices that exhibit step junction behavior. The junction depth varies as the square root of time. Diffusion at 700°C for 4 hr gives a 5-µ junction depth and a surface concentration of 2.4 x1020 cm-3. The surface concentration is enhanced by a factor of three and the junction depth decreased by a factor of ten as compared with diffusion with a starting source 01- elemental zinc. The differences in dijyusion behavior with these two sources are due primarily to the approximately 10' greater equilibrium As4 partial pressure for the 5/50/45 source. ThE most common technique for the preparation of GaAs p-n junctions for diverse applications ranging from switching diodes to injection lasers has been to diffuse zinc into the solid from the vapor phase. The zinc impurity has generally been provided by introducing into a diffusion ampoule elemental zinc, dilute solutions of zinc in gallium, or various combinations of zinc and arsenic. For the purpose of eliminating surface deterioration, zinc has been diffused into GaAs through SiO2 films1 and from zinc-doped SiO2 films.2 During a study of the injection and recombination mechanisms in GaAs junctions, we found that these diffusion techniques either resulted in nonreproducible diffusion profiles and nonplanar junction interfaces or were extremely inconvenient to use. An unpublished report by Allen and pearson3 emphasized that an understanding of diffusion requires relating the diffusion conditions and system compositions to the ternary phase diagram. Recent studies have made it possible to relate the effect of starting source composition on the GaAs sample surface and diffusion profile reproducibility and, in addition, to estimate the expected surface concentration and zinc diffusivity. These studies include the Ga-As-Zn phase diagram,415 the determination of the incorporation reaction for zinc as a substitutional impurity,6 and the analysis of the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient.' In this paper the role of the phase diagram in the selection of the starting diffusion source composition is illustrated, and an application of the diffusion and solubility analyses is used to demonstrate their utility in the estimation of surface concentration and diffusivity for various starting source compositions. Consideration of the isothermal sections of the ternary phase diagram shows that below about 744° C a composition region exists where the three solid phases Zn3As2, GaAs, and ZnAs2 are in equilibrium without a liquid phase. In this region the partial pressures of the components do not vary with composition, and thus the surface concentration and diffusivity depend only on temperature. A diffusion source composition within that region containing 5, 50, and 45 at. pct Ga, As, and Zn was selected. As will be described in detail, this diffusion source yields reproducible diffusion profiles without surface damage, planar junction interfaces, and steep profiles that result in devices with step junction behavior. Only closed diffusion systems are considered. Open or flowing vapor systems require the maintaining of constant vapor pressures in the flowing gas and represent control problems outside the scope of this discussion.

Performance of a high-pressure, vaporizing gas-drive project in a volatile oil reservoir is discussed. The project has been in operation for over 8 years. Present recovery from the over-all displaced portion of the reservoir is 40 percent, and an ultimate recovery of 60 percent is indicated. Calculations reflect an over-all displacement volume of 50 percent for the entire reservoir; therefore, ultimate oil recovery will be 30 percent of the entire reservoir oil originally in place. Laboratory vaporization tests conducted prior to project initiation also are presented and discussed, along with an analytical method of determining stock-tank oil production and gar injection requirements related to over-all volumetric displacement efficiency from these data. Introduction The Shoats Creek field is located in Beauregard Parish, La., in the extreme western part of the state (Fig. 1). Discovered in 1956, the field is productive in three Cockfield sand zones, ranging in depth from 8,000 to 9.000 ft. The upper two zones, 1st and 2nd Cockfield, are condensate-bearing gas reservoirs. The lowest zone, the 5th Cockfield, is a volatile-oil reservoir. Laboratory work conducted on crude oil from the 5th Cockfield zone shortly after field discovery demonstrated that, when contacted with dry gas, signidcant volumes of the oil could be vaporized at reservoir temperature and at an appropriately high reservoir pressure. Further study led to the conclusion that early initiation of a crude vaporization project in the 5th Cockfield zone would be superior economically to other methods of reservoir depletion. Consequently, the zone was unitized and gas injection operations started late in 1958. This paper discusses laboratory work performed in conjunction with the project, and project performance to the present. History of Development The 5th Cockfield zone in Shoats Creek is composed of a thin, very shaly, low-permeability sandstone. Oil accumulation is controlled by a structural trap bounded by faults along the north and west and by a water contact on the southern boundary (Fig. 2). The zone covers a productive area of 1,550 acres at an average depth of 9,000 ft. The net sand section is thin, having a maximum thickness of 10 ft and an average thickness of 5.5 ft (Fig. 3). Average reservoir rock properties, as determined from core analysis are presented in Table 1. Shaliness of the zone is illustrated by the typical electric log of the 5th Cockfield section in Fig. 4. Because of the thinness and poor quality of the sand, the 5th Cockfield was developed on a wide spacing. Eleven completions were made in the zone between 1956 and 1961 for an average density of 140 productive acres per completion, with the majority of wells being dually completed in the 2nd and 5th Cockfield. Average initial potential for producers in the 5th Cockfield was 130 BOPD. Oil from the 5th Cockfield has a stock-tank gravity of 50.5" API; with a bubble-point pressure of 3,515 psia, the oil was highly undersaturated at the original reservoir pressure of 4,675 psia. Pertinent properties of the oil as determined in the laboratory are presented in Table 2. Because of the volatile nature of the crude, laboratory studies of its susceptibility to vaporization, as well as a vapor-liquid phase study, were conducted in addition to a standard PVT analysis. The vaporization study was conducted in a visual cell; a stepwise illustration of this work and laboratory measurements are presented in Fig. 5. Field

Work on the design of Kelex 100 was initiated several years ago at the Research Laboratories of Ashland Chemical Company. The effort was specifically directed toward the synthesis of an organic molecule which would strongly and selectively chelate copper ions in acidic solutions and form an oil soluble complex which would be stable in contact with an aqueous phase having a pH of approximately one. This publication describes efforts to establish data which could be used to estimate the economic utility of the new reagent. For helping to accomplish these ends, the author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. A. V. Henrickson of Hazen Research, Inc. for gathering a portion of the data presented here and to thank the copper companies who supplied leach solutions for studies described in this paper.

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23 percent of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with L/D ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests a radial prestress of 3,000 psi or 5,000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3,000 psi prestress, was 54.3 percent for limestone, 40.3 percent for marble, 44.7 percent for sandstone, and 23.4 percent for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5,000 psi prestress, was 74.2 percent for limestone, 51.2 percent for marble, 61.6 percent for sandstone, and 29.7 percent for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room and pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent.

The variation of binary-diffusion coefficients with composition in the liquid Bi-Sn system at 300°C was measured using the capillary-reservoir technique. The experimental coefficients did not exhibit a simple composition dependence. A number of tests were also made to determine the effect of variation of density with composition on convection within the capillaries. These tests indicate that the density changes arising from composition duferences may give rise to high diffusion coefficients unless care is taken to maintain a stable configuration. In recent years there has been considerable interest in diffusion in liquid metals. However, the bulk of the work done to date has involved measurements of self-diffusion or diffusion of dilute concentrations of "solute" metals. Because there are possible applications to liquid phase processing of metal alloys and since additional data may help to clarify the nature of diffusion in liquid metals, investigations of the concentration variation of diffusion coefficients in binary alloys have been undertaken. Of past studies only two have covered large ranges of binary composition. Niwa et al.' investigated the Pb-Sn, Bi-Pb, and Bi-Sn systems and Grace and Derge2 investigated the Bi-Pb system. Because of the discrepancy between the data of these investigators, it was deemed desirable to check the possibility of convection arising from the variation of density with composition. The capillary-reservoir technique of Anderson and saddington3 was chosen for the present investigation since it has been widely used for measurements involving dilute solute concentrations and it was the technique used by Grace and Derge.2 It was necessary, however, to modify the normal procedure of using a pure metal bath to avoid measurement of integral diffusion coefficients over large concentration ranges. The alloy system chosen for study was the Bi-Sn system for which there are some data available.' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE In order to utilize the capillary-reservoir technique for measurements of diffusion coefficients as a function of composition, it was necessary to modify the normal procedure slightly. This modification consisted of using a reservoir composition which was only slightly different from that in the set of capillaries, in order that the integral coefficients measured might be taken over a small composition range and might thereby be assumed to approximate the differential coefficient at some average composition between that of the capillary and that of the bath. It was found that a composition difference of approximately 0.10 mass fraction provided a satisfactory compromise between a small increment in composition and reasonable accuracy in measuring changes of composition. The alloys were prepared from tin and bismuth of 99.999 pct purity. The materials were first cleaned of surface oxides, then weighed and melted to form a homogeneous alloy in a Pyrex filling apparatus. The capillaries used were of precision bore Pyrex tubing 1.000 *0.005 mm bore. Capillaries of various lengths (from 2.85 to 5.85 cm) were cut and sealed at one end by fusing a 3-mm Pyrex rod to the end. The capillaries were filled by inserting them into the filling chamber, evacuating the chamber, submerging the capillaries, and pressurizing the chamber with argon. Two sets of capillaries were prepared for each run. One set contained an alloy more dense than the bath alloy and one set a less dense alloy. This procedure was followed so that the effect of density difference on the measurement could be determined. After filling one set of capillaries, these were placed open end up in a capillary holder and transferred to the diffusion chamber which consisted of a Pyrex tube inserted into a graphite block. The second set of capillaries was then filled and placed into the diffusion chamber. The reservoir alloy, which had been melted in a separate crucible, then was poured carefully into the diffusion chamber. Sufficient reservoir alloy was used to cover all capillaries to a depth of several centimeters. A theoretical equation is developed describing membrane potentials of shaly sands as a function of the cation-exchange capacity per unit pore volume of the rock and saturating water salinity. This equation is based on the same simple physical model as that employed earlier7 describing the electrical conductivity of shaly sands. Experiments conducted with NaCl solutions showed that the equation is obeyed, except in the case of saturated salt solutions where minor deviations were observed. A possible explanation is given for this discrepancy. As the clay content and the porosity of shales may vary appreciably, shale membrane potentials also vary. It was found that membrane potentials of shales can be calculated accurately with the aid of the same theory. Consequently, changes in membrane potentials can be accounted for by simple measurement of cation-exchange capacities per unit pore volume of both shales and shaly sands. Charts are given to facilitate interpretation of the electrochemical part of the SP in terms of cation-exchange capacities and the salinities of mud filtrate and formation water. INTRODUCTION A spontaneous potential (SP) log is a record of the way in which the electrical potential of a sonde varies as it passes down a borehole. Such variations frequently reflect rock texture, e.g., permeable beds intercalated in an impermeable series often are indicated by a sharp change in potential. Nowadays it is recognized that SP logs may be interpreted in terms of formation-water salinity and formation shaliness. The four sources of the SP are illustrated in Fig. 1. El and E4 represent streaming potentials generated by the flow of mud filtrate through mud cake opposite permeable formations and through shale, respectively. An extensive review of the literature on the evaluation of these streaming potentials is given by Lynchl and will not be discussed here. The remaining part of the SP generally is called the electrochemical potential, which is divided into two parts: a membrane potential across the shale (E3, Fig. 1) and a membrane potential in the permeable sand at the diffusion boundary between formation water and mud filtrate (E2, Fig. 1). It was found by wyllie2 that the membrane potential across the shale, E3, is the most important contribution to the electrochemical potential, the shale acting as a semi permeable membrane. When the sand is clean it does not influence the diffusion process, so E2 equals the value of the so-called liquid-liquid junction potential observed when the two solutions diffuse freely into each other. When the sand contains clay, however, this interferes with the diffusion process and affects the diffusion potential generated. The greater the proportion of clay, the stronger this effect will be. DISLOCATION damping in single crystals is orientation dependent.&apos; If dislocations are distributed uniformly over all the slip systems in a crystal, and if each dislocation contributes identically to the damping process, then a damping loss or decrement 6 arises. In fact, however, for a crystal of axial direction (hkl), dislocations on certain slip systems are oriented to make a larger contribution to the damping loss than are dislocations on other slip systems. Thus the measuring damping, 6 (hkl) is proportional to an orientation factor (hkl), which weights the ability of each slip system in the crystal to contribute to the total damping. If it is assumed that dislocations are distributed uniformly on all slip systems, then for a given orientation of an fcc crystal this factor is determined2,3 by the three nonzero elastic constants Cll, C12, and C44 and the density p. In this communication measured values of elastic constants for two Fe-18Cr-Ni alloys are reported, and the dislocation damping results on two different orientations of each alloy are analyzed for orientation dependence. Elastic constants were determined by measuring the ultrasonic velocities of one longitudinal and two shear waves in (110) direction of the fcc crystals.4 Variation of velocities with the change in orientation is very small for (110) orientation,3 and so this direction is ideal for orientation factor and comparative damping measurements. Experimental Procedures. The nominal compositions of the alloys studied are given in Table I. These alloys were vacuum-melted and vacuum-cast from high-purity materials at U.S. Steel Applied Research Laboratories. The single crystals were grown by the modified Bridgeman technique. The specimens were homogenized at 1350°C for 20 hr, cut to shape and size with a spark cutter, and then annealed at 1100°C for 20 hr prior to use. In the KHz frequency range, the Marx composite piezoelectric oscillator was used to obtain the damping. The ultrasonic pulse technique was used to measure the ultrasonic velocities and the attenuation in the MHz frequency range. Table I gives the values of the ultrasonic velocities. Values of C11, C12, and C44 calculated from these velocities are also given in Table I, and it is evident that there is very little variation in C11, C12, and C44 with nickel content. This slight variation may be attributed to inaccuracies in velocity measurements and practical differences in the orientations of the specimens. For example, in B the time interval for vl was 2.4 ± 0.05 sec giving an error in v1 of 0.235 x or 0.005 in. per sec. The elastic constants obtained by pulse technique were tested by calculating E<110>, Young&apos;s modulus for the (110) direction, from the equation: This value was compared with the value computed from the resonance bar measurements in which where fr is the resonance frequency and I, is the length of the specimen. In attempts to correlate mechanical properties with microstructure, it is desirable to determine the effect of ß grain size. Determination of 6 grain size is not a problem where a has precipitated at ß grain boundaries. However, in alloys which have been processed to produce an equiaxed a +ß structure the ß grain size is difficult to determine because ß grain boundaries do not etch. The ß grain size can sometimes be laboriously determined by searching for grains which have some a! outlining the 6 grains. This difficulty of ß grain size determination in equiaxed a + ß alloys can be overcome by heating below the ß transus temperature for a short time and water quenching. Fig. 1 shows the starting equiaxed a + ß structure of the Ti-5.25A1-5.5V-0.9Fe-0.5Cu alloy used in this investigation, and Fig. 2 shows the microstructure of the same sample water-quenched after heating 1 min at 1675"F, which is 25°F below the 0 transus. HIGH-temperature anneals in wet hydrogen are widely used in research as a technique for decarburiz-ing Fe-C alloys. This technique is also used commercially in processing low-carbon steels for magnetic applications. The results of some calculations to be presented show that for temperatures up to 1100°C there is a critical temperature for maximizing the decarburization rate of alloys containing about 0.1 pct C. The low-temperature portion of the iron side of the Fe-C phase diagram1 is reproduced in Fig. 1. Preliminary calculations show that the critical temperature is between 727" and 905°C. In this range, the alloy contains two phases during heat treatment, ferrite and austenite. Decarburization therefore occurs by a process termed "diffusion accompanied by a phase change".&apos; For intermediate stages of decarburization, the carbon concentration profile in a flat plate is shown in Fig. 2. The carbon content increases linearly from zero at the surface to a value, cB , at the two-phase boundary. cB is known from the phase diagram, see Fig. 1. SEVERAL systems have been investigated by Bates, Wald, and weinstein&apos; to determine the compatibility of pure PbTe with various metals. This was accomplished by experimentally determining the direction of the reaction given by Eq. [I]: The direction of this reaction is very important if alloys of the PbTe system are to be used in thermoelectric generators because the presence of free lead in the matrix, followed by incipient melting in the vicinity of the hot junction, could cause a bonding failure. According to anssen,&apos; the Au-Te system contains only one stable compound, AuTez. The initial alloy which was reacted was therefore of the composition AuTez + 2Pb. Ten-gram samples of PbTe plus 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 70 at. pct Au were encapsulated in carbon-coated quartz capsules in vacuo. All materials were of semiconductor (99.999+ pct) purity. Carbon coating was used to prevent reaction of the quartz with any of the alloying constituents (the solubility of carbon in the constituents of the alloys is negligible). Each capsule was then placed in a thermal analysis furnace, melted, and cooled through the transformation region. Thermal arrests were monitored on a strip chart recorder. Each sample was subsequently examined microscopically after standard grinding and polishing techniques were applied. For better contrast between the phases, the samples were etched in Murakami&apos;s etch; however, both phases could be identified without etching. Several of the samples were ground into powder, stress-relieved, and X-rayed in a Debye-Scherrer camera using nickel-filtered Cu-Ka radiation. The phase diagram shown in Fig. 1 indicates that the pseudobinary system exists as a simple eutectic with no measurable (<I pct) solid solubility at either limit. Figs. 2,3, and 4 are photomicrographs of the structures obtained with 20, 40, and 50 at. pct Au, respectively. At higher concentrations of gold (>40 pct) slight divorcement of the eutectic occurred, apparently due to a) the difference in density between gold and PbTe (19.6 and 8.25 g per cu cm, respectively) or b) the nonideality of the liquid as noted by the curvature of the liquidus lines. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and continuous pilot plant flotation tests to determine the feasibility of recovering commercial-grade mica from an Alabama graphitic-mica schist. Preconcentration of the ground ore on a Humphrey&apos;s spiral was employed to reject the heavy minerals and part of the quartz in a product virtually free of mica. The acid-cationic mica flotation process recovered over 89 percent of the mica in a product containing 98.7 percent mica. Grinding of the mica concentrate in a fluid energy mill produced a product with a bulk density of 12 lb per cubic foot.

In open cast mining of coal, the cost per ton of output is four to five times less and labor productivity five to six times higher than in under- ground mining. This is why the coal industry of the USSR is oriented toward giving priority to the development of open cast coal mining. Deposits of coal which lend themselves to open cast mining in the USSR are enormous, with 90% of them located in the eastern part of the country. The technique is by no means limited to the eastern part, however-despite wide variations in climate, other parts of the Soviet Union also use open cast mining. The occurrence and type of coal deposits in the USSR vary greatly. Some of them are flat coal seams 2 to 40 m thick, and a few are even thicker. There are also deposits having a complex mode of occurrence, such as a series of seams of different thicknesses with angles of dip varying from slightly inclined to steep, often with dislocations. Overburden materials are quite diverse with regard to physical and mechanical properties. There are three kinds encountered-loose or unconsolidated overburden, medium-hard material, and hard rock. The stripping ratio, i.e., the amount of cover per ton of mined coal, varies from 1 to 12 cu m per ton. SYSTEMS OF MINING The great diversity of natural conditions has brought forth a variety of technologies and techniques in the open cast mining of coal. In open cast practice, the following systems of mining are used : (1) a transportation system in which the overburden is transported to spoil banks by rail or by truck; (2) a system with direct disposal of overburden, the rocks being dumped on spoil banks with a stripping excavator; and
