This publication summarizes, for all interested parties, the research, development, and demonstration in-house projets programed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1980 (October 1, 1979 - September 30, 1980) under its Minerals Health and Safety Research program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advances toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the system technology required to create a healthier and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

Many problems occur in recruiting staff to remote mining operations, relating to both domestic and works environments. These are stated, together with steps which have been taken to overcome them. Geographical and climatic conditions applying to the Agnew mining operation are described. Company policies have been established to define criteria for selection of staff, and to define methods by which the criteria are applied.

Consequent on the development of digital computers the importance of analog simulation as a means of studying engineering problems has diminished in recent years. The general-purpose nature of a digital computer ensures its applicability to a wide range of tasks whereas an analog simulator is confined to the one specific use for which it was designed. Nevertheless the analog technique remains attractive in its application to certain aspects of the study of mine ventilation networks, for reasons which will now be developed.

The White Pine orebody is characterized by a high lateral stress or highly faulted and joined conditions. Because of these difficult conditions roof support has always been a main concern. Mechanical bolts were widely used in the early seventies; however, it became apparent that major improvements in ground control were required if safe operation at White Pine was to be continued. The first step was taken in 1973-1974 with the testing of resin bolting. Record of caves and roof-falls with either type of support demonstrated superiority of resin bolting versus mechanical bolting - Safety was dramatically improved which was the absolute first consideration; however resin bolting was still more expensive than mechanical bolting. In order to generalize resin bolt installation, the second step was therefore to acquire special roof bolters compatible with resin bolting. The machine was to enhance the safety of the operation. This was achieved by the acquisition of the Secoma bolting machine equipped with an automatic bolting turret. Being a "hands off" operation the safety of the operator is total. Using a fixed taped attachment of the drill steel on the chuck a front guide and an automatic regulator torque thrust on the steel drilling in small diameter was possible. Being a fully automatic process only one operator is required per machine versus two operators with the conventional machines. The two main objectives were reached enabling the extension of resin bolting to the whole mine.

The surface charge, electrokinetic potential and surface conductance were studied for silica, alumina and rutile as the functions of PH and concentration of 1-1 electrolyte solutions. The adsorption potentials of potential-determining and specifically adsorbed ions were calculated from isoelectric and zero charge points on the basis of Stern equation and thermodynamic description. From surface conductance and charge data the mean ionic mobilities in double layer were estimated. The results give some information about the real structure of oxide-electrolyte interface and gel-layer concept.

INTRODUCTION This submission was made to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into uranium mining in British Columbia. It discusses the stability of waste rock piles that might be developed in conjunction with uranium mining and the control of leachates that might be generated within these waste rock piles over the short and the long term. Short term refers to the interval during which a waste rock pile undergoes either continuous, or alternatively intermittent development, and in general can be considered to extend over the operating life of the mine. Long term refers to the postmining period, i.e. after the ore-body has been exhausted, and mining operations have ceased. Two major classes of waste material are generated in the course of mining and milling operations. Tails, which are the solid waste materials produced by the milling operations commonly exit the mill in slurry form and are stored in tailing retention ponds. Management and control of these slurried wastes are the subject of other papers to the Commission and this conference. In the course of the mining operations, it may be necessary to remove rock materials that are below cut-off grade. That is, ore concentrations within some of the mined rock may be lower than the concentrations which on the basis of economic considerations justifies milling the material. Rock which is removed in the course of the mining operations, but which is below cut-off grade is referred to as waste rock. This waste rock is commonly consigned to a specific area for disposal where it is placed in a mound or pile, i.e. a waste rock pile. Ore concentrations within the waste rock may vary from zero to just below cut-off grade. Since an increase in the market value of uranium could at some time in future result in reduction of the cut-off grade, it follows that waste rock containing ore concentrations slightly below today's cut-off grade could become ore grade rock at some time in future. For this reason, the mine operators may deem it advisable to separate waste rock according to grade, and to consign the waste rock to two or more individual waste rock piles. For purposes of clarity and simplicity, this submission treats the stability of waste rock piles and leachate control in a manner which assumes that these potential problems are isolated and separate from other aspects of the mining and milling operations. For many site specific cases, the problem of potential leachate control might be integrated with the tailings management aspect of the project, thereby realizing economic benefits while at the same time reducing the potential for adverse environmental impact.

"Indusmin's history dates back to 1937 when they developed the Blue Mountain Nepheline Syenite deposit at Nephton, Ontario, and began supplying material for the glass, fiberglass, paint, ceramics and rubber industries.Since then, as a subsidiary of Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Indusmin has expanded the Nephton operation, diversified into the aggregate quarries for the construction industries, with operations at Acton and Halton, Ontario, established silica plants at St. Canut, Quebec and Midland, Ontario, to supply the glass, carbide, ceramics, cleanser and concrete products industries, and the purchase of a foundry, Fahramet Limited, Orillia, Ontario, supplying steel and alloy castings to the mining, construction cement and petrochemical industries.Indusmin also has a Technical Resource Centre and Head Office facilities in Toronto.As this paper deals with Indusmin's experience with dust abatement, and although dust control is a concern at the Nephton, St. Canut and Orillia plants, we will be confining this paper to the experience gained at the Badgeley Quarry and Midland plant of the Ontario Silica Operation."

INTRODUCTION The production of fines is an unwanted side-effect in most crystallization processes. The definition of “fines" is relative to the size of the desired product and varies from <30 mesh for coarse KC1 fertilizers to subsieve organic material produced by salting-out pro- cesses. Sometimes a well-developed fines distribution is necessary in the production of large crystals, e.g. the fines removal stream from a potash crystallizer. The production of fines is usually not desired in a crystallization separation step. However, product purity can either improve or degenerate with a decrease in crystal size depending on the relative importance of product washing vs mother liquor occlusions in determining over-all purity. Typically, both washing efficiency and mother liquor occlusions decrease with decreasing particle size. Fine crystal distributions have historically been difficult to measure and categorize; however this situation is changing rapidly with the use of electronic particle counters of the electrical zone- sensing or light scattering type. In fact, fine-crystal measurement is perhaps the key to better understanding and control of coarse- crystal crystallization processes. The fine-crystal distribution carries much useful information from which nucleation and growth rates can be inferred. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss a few crystallization processes in which production and/or measurement of fines is important and to categorize the process conditions which yield a fine- crystal product.

In the past decade, many hardrock surface miners have revegetated dumps and tailings ponds to allow those waste disposal areas to blend more easily with the surrounding landscapes. Efforts have also been made to more creatively use the flat land resulting from the disposal of overburden and tailings. However, the mines which serve the best post-mining land uses are those that have been preplanned to incorporate such end uses. To more fully explore such a philosophy, interdisciplinary team from The University of Arizona conducted a study during 1974 and 1975 of six open pit copper mines in the Santa Cruz River Basin south of Tucson, Arizona for the purpose of investigating both interim and end-use possibilities for mine waste disposal areas. Among other reasons for the study, it was felt that alternatives for such waste areas would be more socially acceptable than barren dumps or tailings ponds. The team, known as the Mines Project Group, consisted of architects, engineers, and hydrologists. As it would have been economically infeasible to move the existing waste rock dumps or tailings ponds, preplanning was limited to the disposal of waste generated after the inception of the project. To better present their concepts, architecture professors Kenneth Clark and Fred Matter constructed a large-scale cardboard relief model of the mines and the surrounding Santa Cruz River Valley (1). The model was built at a scale of 1:12 000 (1 in = 1000 ft) with 30.48 m (100 ft) contour intervals and covered an area of 40.23 km by 32.18 km (25 miles by 20 miles) in scaled area. The mines being studied were cut into the model, but the proposed waste dumps and tailings ponds were built separately so different disposal configurations could be evaluated.

Traditionally, only the large mining companies have maintained specialist departments in such areas as Rock Mechanics, Ventilation and Safety. To the small companies this has been a luxury that they could ill afford. Any work required by such companies in these areas, more complex than could be handled by the existing staff, was done by consultants. This situation is changing though and there is a need arising for many specialist departments. These changes are partly being brought about by the effects of inflation as the ever increasing costs are causing more and more operators to increase the size of their operations in search of economies of scale. In addition though the plethora of new laws and regulations are creating a need for many more specialists in all areas of mining in order to ensure compliance. The abovementioned factors, added to the existing Pattern of mines endeavoring to improve the working environment for their labor force, both for reasons of practical labor relations and also due to further legislative pressures, have thus created a climate where, in the near future, departments such as Rock Mechanics, Safety, Ventilation, Environmental Engineering and Subsidence Control will be commonplace in mining companies. It will no longer be practical to function without such services. Many mining companies already maintain such departments and this has particularly been true of the big mining groups of South Africa. From the experience gained by many of these large companies with specialist departments, it is clear that the maintenance of a cadre of experienced, competent professionals in such a department has not always been easy. It would seem from the experience gained that one can generalise and state that graduate mining engineers tend not to view specilisation as an optimum direction for their career development. It is of course true that many professionals, especially those with higher than a bachelors degree, do view these areas as valid career options, but even here experience shows that wastage is high. The time therefore seems to be ripe to take a look at this area in some detail to see whether reasons for the problems can be isolated. Working from that some suggestions can be made as to directions in which improvements might be made. If the challenge of the demands of the new regulations are to be met then such improvements must be made.

Efficiently clear ice and frozen materials from ore-handling equipment. Approach Compressed air-propane torches that develop a high energy flame jet were used instead of ordinary propane torches. How it Works A high velocity high temperature stream of gases impinges on the ice and frozen materials to both melt and blast them away. Quantification of size, shape and composition has been one of the more difficult areas for those concerned with fine particle processing of coal.&apos; Image analysers fed by optical microscopes and by scanning electron microscopes possessing backscatter detectors and energy dispersive facilities now offer techniques to improve the speed and precision of previous methods. This paper discusses the methodology and procedural difficulties associated with the microanalysis of coal. Photographs show display quality on the image analyser monitor and the equipment mentioned. Data illustrating several of the procedures are included. The major portion of data for design and operation of plant for fine particle processing depends on information regarding size, shape and composition of granular material. The lower limits of particle sizes become more important as lower grade deposits are mined. Because of the trends towards treatment of finer materials, the use of image analysis offers advantages in time, effort and accuracy. As energy becomes more critical, the above applies especially to coal processing. The Zeiss Microvideomat 2, a leading member of the second generation instruments, is now available for image analysis. There is a precision television scanning system with monochrome camera, display, control panel and central processor (see Figure 1).

"ABSTRACTThis paper briefly describes the mining method proposed for the iron ore deposits in Wadi Shatti, western Libya. The iron ore produced will be used in the steel plant at Misurata on the Mediterranean coast. GeologyThe Wadi Shatti is located in the central part of western Libya. Flat iron-bearing sedimentary rocks are exposed with remarkable regularity in this valley. It occupies an area 200 km long by approximately 20 km wide trending in an eastnortheast direction between Jabal Fazzan in the north and Zel1af Sand Dunes in the south (Fig. I). Only a part of this valley has been ful1y explored by drilling on a 400- by 200-m pattern in an area of 18 km2 south of the town of Taroot. Farther to the south, no exploration by drilling can be done due to the presence of sand dunes .The iron-bearing bed is about 10to 15m thick, with a dip of 2 to 4 degrees in a southerly direction . The overburden consists mainly of clayey sandstones, 4 to 5 m thick, in the northern part, increasing to 35 m in the southern part. The iron ore bed consists of three different layers, from the floor upward: (1) Lower Reduced Ore (LRO), having a varying thickness of 1 to 7 m; (2) Magnetic Ore (MO), with a thickness varying from 4 to 12 m mainly in the central part of the area; and(3) Upper Reduced Ore (URO), with a bed thickness varying from 0 to 7 m."

"This paper begins with a brief discussion of the geology of the Newfoundland Zinc Mine area. The results of groundwater studies and pumping tests are then presented. It was decided that groundwater in the mine could best be controlled by conventional sump pumping and grouting. The system is fully described, as well as plans for improvements on the method. LocationThe Newfoundland Zinc Mine is located in the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, six miles northeast of Daniel&apos;s Harbour. The mine is situated at an elevation of approximately 350 feet above sea level, 5 miles farther inland , west of the long range of mountains which rise abruptly with elevations of over 2,000 feet above sea level.GeologyThe ore deposits occur in lower Ordovician carbonate rocks that form part of the stable St. Lawrence platform, which is mainly composed of (1) the lower Cambrian Labrador group, (2) the upper Cambrian to lower Ordovician St. George group, (3) the disconformity overlying Middle Ordovician limestones and shales of the Table Head formation and, (4) two overlying klippen composed of Cambrian and lower Ordovician rocks.The ore deposit is a Mississippi Valley type of the Tennessee variety, having proven are reserves of 5.3 million tons averaging 9.70/0 zinc from eleven ore zones which exist in an area of 5.5 square miles.Among these ore zones, the L zone is the major underground mining area, and is by far the largest of the known deposits. It has proven are reserves of 3.4 million tons with 11.5% zinc; this underground development has been inprogress since 1974.Stratigraphically, the orebody, which occurs about 300 feet below the disconformities between the Table Head and St. George formations, is situated in the upper St. George formationof lower Ordovician age.The upper St. George formation of the L zone is divided into three main units (Fig . I) : the underlying lower limestone the middle grey dolomite pseudo breccia unit and the overlying siliceous dolomite unit. In this area of the mine, the beds of the St. George formation dip gently west to northwest to 10 to 15 degrees. The orebody, which is generally strata controlled with a southwesterly plunge and which has the form of thin, narrow, but elongate, en-echelon ore bed s, is contained in grey dolomite pseudo breccia. Its dimensions vary from 50 to 900 feet in width and 8 to 120 feet in thickness, and the over-alllength exceed s 6,000 feet.The surficial deposit of the area is a till comprising a heterogeneous mixture of sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders, with an average depth of 20 feet."

Literally millions of words have been written on the subject of mineral slurry pipelining. The sheer bulk of literature on the subject should be enough to convince the interested observer that the method is both viable and widely applied. It is the intent of this paper to examine typical mineral slurry applications. This examination should reveal the reasons that the slurry system was selected over other transport modes and it should provide a framework for determining the applicability of the technique to new projects. Slurry transport involves the conveyance of solid particles by suspension in a moving liquid. Almost any combination of solids in liquids may be imagined, and the conduit may be an open channel or a closed pipe. Historically, the most numerous slurry transport applications consisted of mineral particles in water. However, current research investigations are emphasizing other liquid carriers, specifically those which have greater economic value. Among these are gaseous and liquid fuels and chemical feedstocks. Another area being investigated involves the use of the pipeline as a chemical reactor system. The long residence time and turbulent flow characteristics of the pipeline make it particularly attractive for certain chemical reactions. The problem of instantaneous outbursts remains unsolved after over a century of events and the investigation of the mechanism of the phenomenon and means of treating it. Outbursts have occurred of up to 5,000 tonnes with perhaps up to 500,000 m3 of accompanying gas, either methane (CH4) or carbon dioxide (C02) or mixtures. The low density of CH4 and the high density of CO2 give particular problems. Australia with both gases has experienced outbursts for 85 years with fatalities as recent as 1978. The Bulli Seam of the Illawarra area of the Sydney Basin is affected and outbursts with both CH4 and CO2 occur. The Northern and Central Bowen Basin also experiences outbursts with both gases. Proneness of affected mines is related to the high rank of the&apos;coal and the proneness of the seams-is localised according to depth, gassiness, structure and development geometry. Proneness may be reduced by appropriate choice of mining methods. In addition to outbursting mines other mines have symptomatic phenomena. Traditional preventive methods have been used and control by induce- ment has been practised. INTRODUCTION Much discussion has been generated over the years among geologists and engineers as to the ideal drill-hole configuration and spacing for evaluating various types of mineral deposits. Little can be found in the literature about the outcome of the programs, probably because of their subjective nature and the then lack of suitable means of scientific testing. In years past the drilling patterns and sequence were almost entirely determined by the experience and personal bias of the senior engineer, geologist, or project manager on the job. However, planning a drilling program- spacing, pattern, sequencing, etc.-is simply a specific case of sample design, or the design of a sampling program. Having been exposed in the preceding chapter to the theory of regionalized variables, and having learned something about the tools for measuring correlation, or lack of correlation, among samples within a given mineralogical population, we are now prepared to apply these concepts and new-found parameters to a scientifically designed mineral sampling program, be it by drilling or other means.
