The salt gradient solar pond has been the focal point of accelerating international attention and interest in recent months. Only recently have most investigators in the renewable energy field come to realize the versatility of the solar pond, and its ability to overcome certain problems usually associated with solar technologies. These realizations, together with clear demonstrations in Israel and elsewhere of its technical feasibility, have combined to bring the solar pond to the forefront of renewable energy technologies. The solar pond is a natural or site-built pond, about one to five meters or more in depth, which has been altered to retard the loss of absorbed solar energy. The absorbed solar energy is usually lost through upward buoyancy of the warmed water, followed by the loss of its heat to the atmosphere. The chief solar pond technology -the salt gradient, or "nonconvective" solar pond-prevents this upward buoyancy by means of a vertical density gradient achieved with dissolved salt. The deep waters in the solar pond reach high temperatures, up to and even above the boiling point of pure water.

"The Fox Mine has been producing copper/ zinc ore since 1970 at a rate of approximately one million tons per year, and until 1978all production was derived from longhole open stopes. In June 1978, a trial stope using bighole mining methods was started to eliminate the development of two sublevels between 400 level and surface. The trial proved to be successful, and bighole mining is now an accepted mining method for both stopes and pillars at Fox Mine.When production blasting was started in the first stope, the biggest problem encountered was the production of large amounts of sulphur dioxide gas as a result of secondary sulphide dust explosions. This gas generation resulted in lost production time and caused minor damage to underground installations to the blast level, and to the headframe. Sulphur dioxide generation has been noted in secondary drawpoint blasts and, on rare occasions, in drift rounds.This paper discusses the occurrence of the sulphur blasts and the practices and precautions used to prevent their reoccurrence at Fox Mine.IntroductionThe Fox minesite is located 30 miles southwest of Lynn Lake, Manitoba. With production startup in 1970, Fox Mine is owned and operated by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited.The Fox orebody occurs as a large lenticular zone of semi-massive sulphides approximately 1,500 feet long and 15 to 100 feet wide running east and west. Dipping 70 degrees to the north, the orebody tends to bottom out at the 3200-foot level and reaches to within 15 feet of surface."

A laboratory investigation was carried out to obtain data on the explosive character- istics of selected coals mined in New South Wales. Seven coal seams were sampled and the volatile matter content of the coals tested varied between 28 and 37 percent. A mod- ified Hartmann apparatus with a volume of 1250 ml was used in the investigation. Dust clou' generation was produced by an air blast delivered radially through a mushroom type valve and the ignition source was a-continuous A.C. spark produced by a 20 000 V, 50 mA transformer. The coal dust parameters invest- igated were the maximum pressure developed, the average and maximum rates of pressure rise at dust concentrations between 200 and 1500 3 g/m.

An investigation of the possibility of improving the grinding characteristics of a gabbro ore containing copper and nickel sulfides via a thermal shock treatment technique has been carried out. The results obtained indicate that the breakage characteristics of the gabbro are particles can be significantly improved by preheating the are particles to a temperature around 400°C followed by rapid water quenching. For a given power input and feed size, the thermally treated material produces a product of much finer distribution than the untreated material. An assessment of the improvement in grindability has been made by calculating feed size selection functions for untreated and heat-treated materials.

The petroleum sector continued to dominate Ecuador's economic activity in 1978, accounting for nearly 10% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and 42% of total export earnings. In 1978, a more flexible petroleum export price was adopted which permitted an expansion of foreign market opportunities. During 1979, Ecuador took advantage of disruptions in the world petroleum supply and renegotiated existing export contracts to accomodate the rapidly escalating world market price. Petroleum sales on the spot market were maximized, and prices reached unprecedented levels. By taking royalty payments in-kind, Ecuador increased its volume of petroleum available for term and spot sales. Although the volume remained about the same as in 1978, the total value of 1979 petroleum exports increased to about $920 million, reflecting a 76% increase over the $523 million received for 1978 crude oil exports. Concerned about its steadily decreasing petroleum reserves (recently estimated at about 1.1 billion barrels), rapidly increasing and heavily subsidized domestic consumption, and the prospect of having to import substantial amounts of petroleum by 1983, Ecuador announced plane which it anticipates will double reserves within the next 5 years. The Government plans to spend $1 billion over the 5-year period. Plans include drilling 325 exploration and development wells and establishment of a secondary recovery program for the Sachs and shushufindi fields. Some exploration wells are expected to reach a depth of 17,000 feet. It is thought that substantial reserves exist in the southeast Amazon region. Late in 1979, it was announced that some 10 million hectares will be available for exploration tenders-probably in blocks of about 200,000 hectares each-in the Amazon jungle of the Orients and in the coastal and offshore regions. The Government planned to commission a private, independent analysis of Ecuador's petroleum reserves that would also include recommendations on efficient production levels.

The sub-level caving mining method has been applied in base metal mines in Canada under a wide range of ore body and wall rock conditions. This method has been used for primary, as well as secondary mining of both small and large ore bodies of varying ore values. Early experiences of almost all operations were somewhat disappointing. This paper details the initial problems encountered, the design changes made and solutions evolved. Additional experience and the development of operating skills, have helped the method gain acceptance as a viable method for the mining conditions to which it has been adopted.

INTRODUCTION An evaluation of the radiological health risks from uranium mining and milling requires the determination of several key parameters. As shown in Figure 1, the first step is the estimation of the radioactive source term. The radionuclides in the ore consist of the 238U decay series nuclides shown in Figure 2, the 235U series nuclides, and 40K. The 238U decay series isotopes dominate the source term, with the 235U series isotopes causing less concern and 40K remaining at background levels. [ ] Specifically, the risks from uranium mining and milling are mainly associated with 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn, and its short-lived daughters. These radioisotopes are mainly alpha-particle emitters; hence, some dispersion mechanism is necessary to bring them into intimate contact with man so that they can be inhaled or ingested For water pathways, the leaching of the isotopes from [ ] the solid ore or tailings provides a measure of the amount of contaminant initially available to the environment. For the air pathway, dust-creation mechanisms such as blasting, crushing or general resuspension processes dominate for 226Ra and 230Th. However, 222Rn, being a chemically inert gas generated from the decay of 226Ra, can migrate through the ore, overburden and tailings over considerable distances. As shown in Figure 1, the next step in the pathway to man is environmental dilution and delay. For the water transport mechanism, the delay in the isotopes reaching an accessible water supply may be considerable (several thousand years or more), but for airborne nuclides the dispersion in the atmosphere is rapid and constitutes the main mitigating factor. Considerable ventilation is provided in underground mines to dilute and remove radon and its daughters in order to keep their concentrations low and thereby minimize their inhalation by miners. The rate of uptake by both the workers and the general public is often difficult to ascertain. It involves breathing rates, rates of water consumption and other poorly-defined parameters. Many of you are familiar with the Washington Metro Project. However, inasmuch as some may not be, and others may want to refresh their memories regarding certain facets of the project, I will cite a few summary details about the rail transit system we are constructing. That summary will also give each of us a common point for departure as I develop the principal thoughts that I want to leave with you. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is an interstate agency established by Compact between the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia and approved by the United States Congress. Currently, the Authority has approval to build and operate a 101-mile (162.5 km) regional rapid rail transit system as shown on Appendix A. Of that total, 38 miles (61.2 km) will be in D. C., 32 miles (51.5 km) in Maryland and 30 miles (48.3 km) in Virginia. (Mileage figures, because of rounding error, do not add to 101 miles.) Referring again to the 101-mile total, 48 miles (77.2 km) will be underground, 42 miles (67.6 km) on the surface and 10 miles (16.1 km) on aerial structures. Of the 48 miles (77.2 km) that are underground, 15 miles (24.1 km) are rock tunnel, 14 miles (22.5 km) are earth tunnel, 0.5 miles (0.8 km) 9.s sunken tube and 19 miles (30.6 inn) are cut-and-cover construction. The system will include 86 stations, with 51 of them underground. Referring again to the full 86 stations, 43 will be in D. C., 23 in Maryland and 20 in Virginia. We currently have 37 miles (59.5 km) of line and 41 stations in operations as shown on Appendix B. Coal mine drainage, which occurs predominantly as acid mine drainage in the East, is a serious contaminant of surface and groundwater systems (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). Treatment of this pollutant can be very costly and is often difficult to achieve (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). A major source of coal mine drainage in surface waters is polluted ground- water discharge, therefore treatment of surface water does little to combat groundwater contamination. Prevention of the formation of coal mine drainage and restricting its entrance into the groundwater protects both surface and groundwater systems. The formation of acid mine drainage may be inhibited by preventing contact between toxic spoil, air, and water (Grim and Hill, 1974). This may be accomplished by surrounding toxic spoil with a relatively impermeable barrier, thus restricting groundwater and oxygen flow through the toxic zone. Toxic spoil packages constructed in this manner would minimize the entrance of acid mine drainage into the groundwater system, allowing dilution by uncontaminated water to occur. If successful, concentrations of coal mine drainage would be reduced below toxic levels.

This title of is not that originally chosen for the Colloquium, which was 'A high gold price'. Such a title would have been unfortunate because it would have related the Colloquium only to the high gold price of the past two years, which reached the dizzy peak of 850 dollars per ounce in January 1980. The chosen title is, of course, the right one because it places the whole problem in the right perspective. It relates to a situation that has occurred many times before. Over the course of the past century, the gold price has periodically been inhibited from rising, so that it has undergone a succession of stepwise increments. With each increase, the relationship of the working cost to the gold price alters, and gives rise to a jump in ore reserves. Award for CMI fuelling technique Consolidated Metallurgical Industries Limited - the Lydenburg-based ferrochromium producer in the J.C.I. group - was one of the five recipients of the 1981 National Productivity Institute annual award.

Native asphalt was produced in 1980 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output decreased 22% in 1980 to 1.25 million tons while value decreased 2% to $25.0 million. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert, Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. The product was used mainly in street and road repair. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsonite Co. in Uinta County, Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County, Utah. This material was used for purposes other than road repair.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is sponsoring the construction and operation of a coal cleaning test facility at Homer City, Pennsylvania. The facility represents a major investment by the electric utility industry to advance the state of the art of conventional coal cleaning technology. The facility is unique in design and can process large quantities of coal in conventional flowsheet configurations, simulate full size plant conditions, and perform open and closed loop performance testing on conventional and advanced coal cleaning equipment. Computer operation will also be demonstrated. The facility objectives, initial complement, and operating plane are discussed as they relate to other coal cleaning projects at EPRI.

The economics of the producer-consumer interface - the route from mine to market - impact much more severely on specialty industrial minerals, extender/fillers that have to be sold, than on commodity industrial minerals that are basically supplied. Working capital costs for inventories and accounts receivable, fixed capital costs for storage/ warehousing/distribution, and sales and marketing costs all make the extender/filler producer much more of a marketer than a miner. The future survival of an extender/filler producer will primarily depend on the skill he has in the economics of the interface.

Introduction The methods used in surface, mining vary throughout the world, depending on many variables such as: the types of over- burden materials, the depth of the overburden, the thickness of the seam, and other operational choices, both financial and functional. However, the stripping machines are typically draglines, stripping shovels, excavators, scrapers, loaders, and bulldozers. In all cases the economic feasibility of mining thin seams depends on the market needs, the market location, the equipment used, the mine management, the quality of the coal, and the labor market. Slight negative combinations of these parameters have closed many mines while positive combinations allow others to exist. The limited mobility or slow movement of large stripping shovels, draglines, and bucket wheel excavators make them more economically fitted to areas where large quantities of overburden are to be moved. This is necessary to keep the transfer and setup time between pits a negligibly small percent of the total operational time. Equipment such as the scrapers, loaders, backhoes, trucks, and bulldozers that are either very mobile or can be trailered is more versatile and can be used in the smaller area mines.* Mobile equipment is also more practical in areas with shallow overburden because of the constant movement required while removing overburden. In thin coal seams the equipment is usually paired such that the operational equipment can be listed as: (1) dragline-loader, (2) shovel-truck- loader, (3) scraper-loader. (4) loader-truck-loader, or (5) loader-loader. In these operations the overburden is removed with the first machine(s) of the pairing and the loader or loaders are used for coal production. Recent articles in Coal Age (Chironis, 1978) and Mining Engineering (Wiebmer, 1978) have discussed varying philosophies in mining similar seams of coal. One operator uses draglines for competitive mining while the other uses scrapers for the same purpose. Both cite strong cases sup- porting their choice of equipment as good sound economic decisions and their success supports their choices. The drag-line operation is adding new larger draglines to decrease the cost of mining, rather than to increase coal production. The development of structural defects in the overburden material immediately behind a production blast was studied using surface and subsurface techniques. A significant increase in vertical and horizontal fracture intensity was recorded. The extent of fracturing into the highwall appeared to be dependent on the structural and petrologic characteristics of the various lithological units and the relative position of the explosive charges. A shallow zone of disruption to a depth of 10 m and extending to around 30 m from the newly formed highwall crest was recorded. Horizontal fractures in lower units of the overburden sequence were recorded at distances up to 50 m from the new highwall Face.

Stockpiles have always been a necessary part of coal mining except, perhaps, when a person was mining only for the needs of his family from a seam on his home place or coal mined for the use of a small hamlet and carried to each man's house as it was mined. Then it may have been stockpiled at each man's place for several days or on the village common. Mining with this limited production required waste stockpiling. Stockpiling of the products of coal mining, both coal and waste material, has always been a necessity. Very little coal has ever been moved directly or immediately from the working face to the point of consumption and burned. It has always been expedient to stockpile the coal some- where and store the waste.

In recent years stricter requirements imposed variously by the Companies Acts, auditors and the Stock Exchanges have resulted in annual financial statements of mining companies becoming more detailed, informative and useful. Standards of reporting on ore reserves have not kept pace with the improvements in financial information disclosure, despite the fact that ore reserves are usually the most important asset of a mining company. The ore reserve reporting practices of fifteen leading Australian mining companies are analysed against important specific criteria. In terms of detailed and meaningful disclosure, there is scope for major improve- ments in annual ore reserve reporting Practices.

The concept of limit burning velocities is being used to formulate a quantitative theory of flammability limits. Competing and complicating processes dissipate power from a combustion wave and quench propagation at some characteristically low limit velocity. Two earlier reports dealt with process (a), natural convection (RI 8127); and with process (b), conductive-convective wall losses (RI 8469). This report considers process (c), radiative losses, and process (d), selective diffusional demixing. The limit burning velocity for radiative losses is [(SU)c ~ e cp] It is normally not a significant process for premixed gas flames; however, for laminar flame propagation in a gravity-free environment, it is the only loss process present. Accordingly, limit velocities at zero gravity should be much lower than on earth, and premixed gases should be flammable over wider composition ranges. For highly emissive dusts, soot, or ash-forming flames, radiative losses are significant even under normal gravity conditions. Selective diffusional demixing is a complication that manifests itself in the form of cellular flame structures and wide gaps in composition between upward and downward propagation limits. It induces a burning velocity shift (?Su)d, causing the flame to behave as though it were richer or leaner than its initial composition, depending on whether the fuel or the oxidizer mole¬cule has the higher diffusivity. A simple pertubation analysis shows that the process generates stable cellular flames whenever [dsu] > 0, where ci is the concentration of the reactant with the higher diffusivity. The same analysis indicates that at the opposite stoichiometry, where [dcu] < 0, laminar structures are stabilized. A simple formula for the diameter of cellular flames is derived, which predicts that dcell should vary inversely with the product of the diffusivity difference Di -DJ, and the burning velocity slope [dc ]. Those predictions are in good agreement with the available data. Buoyancy forces for upward propagation induce flame front curvature, and hence buoyancy and selective diffusion are mutually supportive in upward propagation. Thus large gaps in composition between upward and downward limits are present in those composition domains where cellular flames are stable.

The Ortiz Mine is operated by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields Ltd., one of the world&apos;s major gold producers. The Ortiz Mine is Gold Fields only heap leaching facility as well as being their first operating mine in the U.S.A. The hydrometallurgical processes utilized for recovery of gold and silver at Ortiz are discussed along with the several practical changes in operation adopted since start-up. Included are heap leaching by cyanidation, concentration of values on activated carbon, desorption, and the final electrowinning steps prior to shipment. Construction costs and pertinent technical data are shown.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale experiments to determine whether or not surface waters with a high organic content could be purified sufficiently to be used to replace the natural high-quality deep well water currently being used in the silica flotation step of phosphate rock beneficiation. Waters abundant in organic matter were collected from two central Florida streams, flocculated with a cationic polyethylenimine polymer, and processed in a sand filter. This treatment removed most of the organic materials from the water. Untreated surface water, treated surface water, and distilled water were used to compare the flotation response of the acid insolubles in an amine flotation circuit. Surface water treated with PEI-1000 was shown to be as effective as distilled water for the acid-insoluble-flotation step. Flocculation and filtration can therefore produce water suitable for amine flotation of quartz, which would permit substitution of surface water for deep well water.
