Attempt has been made to determine the nature of charge on activated carbon surface by studying the electro-kinetic properties of the carbon in the presence of cations, anions and aurocyanide solutions. The zeta-potential measurements were made in the presence of individual ions and also in combinations. The cations and anions chosen were those commonly associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area. It was found that the iso-electric point of Norit Carbon was at pH 4.45; below this pH the charge was positive, while above, it was negative. In the absence of gold cyanide solutions and in the presence of individual cations the i.e.p. shifted to the alkaline range (pH 7.2-8.5) while in the presence of anions the i.e.p. was shifted to less than pH 3.5. In the presence of aurocyanide solutions, the iso-electric point was still in the acid region irrespective of whether anions or cations were present. The probable mechanism for such a behaviour has been attempted after measuring the specific conductivities of solutions before and after gold adsorption, by studies using the electron- probe-mirco-analyser, and S.E.M. on the carbon surface.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a technique to separate and recover the three major components, Pb, Zn, and Cd, from lead smelter flue dust. This research was conducted as part of the Bureau's effort to reduce environmental conflicts and occupational hazards associated with mineral-processing operations and to recover valuable constituents in emissions and effluents. The laboratory process utilizes sulfation roasting of the flue dust followed by water leaching to extract over 95 pct of the cadmium and zinc. Ninety-nine percent of the cadmium was recovered from solution by cementing with zinc dust, and zinc was electrowon from the resulting solution after purification. Zinc electrolysis was carried out in a 1-liter cell at 35° C with a cathode-current density of 8 A/dm2 in a solution containing 65 g/l Zn++ and 180 g/l H2S04, Current efficiencies of 80 pct were obtained. The leached residue consisted largely of PbS04, which was converted to PbC03 and leached with H2SiF6 to produce PbSiF6 electrolyte. Ninety-five percent of the lead contained in the residue was converted to electrolyte. Lead was electrowon from solutions containing 70 gil Pb++ and 90 g/l H2SiF6 using a lead cathode, Pb02-coated titanium anodes at 28° C, and a current density of 1.6 A/dm2. Current efficiencies approaching 92 pct were obtained. Accessory minerals such as cobalt and nickel were separated into purification residues and liquor.

Mining means drilling and blasting in order to break down the rock, loading and transport, and often also crushing the ore down to a suitable size. These operations can be done in open pits or in underground mines, and also, to a lesser extent, in marine mining. The same operations are also used in various types of construction, i.e., for roads, water power stations, etc. Before beginning a detailed economic analysis of the factors which enter into deciding whether to mine by open-pit or underground mining, and at what point a change should be made from open-pit to underground mining, or vice versa, it is of interest to consider some general factors.

In March, the Minister of Mines, Mrs. Judy Erola, released a mineral discussion paper at the annual meeting and convention in Toronto of the Prospectors and Developers Association. Among the mineral objectives discussed was the revitalization of the "junior" mining industry. That industry reportedly has seen its share of total exploration expenditures fall from 50% in 1969 to 10% in 1979. Some sources believe the reason to be the rise of exploration costs and more- restrictive legislation The junior mining industry reportedly was responsible for 40% of all mineral discoveries in the 1969-79 period. CZECHOSLOVAKIA Czechoslovakia expects its capacity for the recovery of gallium metal to increase from 1,650 kilograms to nearly 3,000 kilograms per year by the installation of new recovery equipment at the aluminum plant at Ziar Nad Hronom in Central Slovakia. World production data are not reported, but the United States consumed 8,000 kilograms (estimated) in 1981, of which 5,536 kilograms were imported. Gallium is recovered as a byproduct of the Bayer process for the conversion of bauxite to alumina, and from certain zinc processing wastes. It is used for electronic applications such as light-emitting diodes for visual display panels in calculators, clocks, and other instruments.

Characteristics of surface deformations i.e., sub¬sidence, inclination, curvature and horizontal strains, are evaluated, based on information obtained by direct field measurements over three longwall panels in the Northern Appalachian Coalfield. Surface deformations have been precomputed using Bals' and Knothe's theories. The results have been compared with Bureau of Mines field data to evaluate the applicability of the two theories to the U.S. min¬ing conditions. Measured horizontal movements and the resulting horizontal strains differ as much as 300 percent from precomputed values. Topography has no detectable effect on vertical movements but appears to have substantial effect on the development of horizontal strains. The horizontal deformations computed from our field measurements generally exceed the limits used in other countries to protect surface structures.

This paper gives the history of the audiometric testing program carried out by Inco Metals Company, including the program objectives the personnel and equipment involved, calibration and testing, the test procedure, and the classification and evaluation of the test results.IntroductionThe operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Metals Company are located primarily in the Sudbury District. They also include a refine ry at Port Colborne and a mine and concentrator at Shebandowan near Thunder Bay.The company operates nine underground mines, and one open pit, while maintaining six underground mines on a standby basis. Ore from these operations is processed in four concentrators. The metallurgical facilities include a smelter, a matte processing plant, a copper refinery, a nickel refinery and an iron ore recovery plant at Sudbury, and a nickel refinery at Port Colborne. Inco Metals currently mines roughly 9,000,000 tons annually and produces IS elements.Excessive noise in the work place has been a serious problem in the mining industry since the introduction of compressed-air-powered machinery in the last century. At the same time, growing levels of noise inherent in our social environment can threaten the hearing of employees and their families.Only in the last 20 years, however, has the extent of this problem and its implications for people working in the industry and their families been recognized. Since the industry has become aware of the situation it has taken steps to implement comprehensive noise reduction and hearing conservation programs."

The Belize economy recorded modest growth during 1980; the growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in real terms was between 1% and 2%. At current prices, the 1980 GDP reached $108 million2. This output was largely attributed to the performance of a few industries, mostly nonminerals. Such performance improved significantly the balance of payments situation by reducing the deficit from $19 million in 1979 to $4 million in 1980. The rate of inflation was an estimated 18% in 1980 and would have been greater if not for a conservative monetary policy and price control on a number of essential items. Expert earnings increased $43 million, or 50%, from the 1979 level. After increasing more than 25% in 1979, imports increased only 6% in 1980 to a level of $141 million owing to the decline in investment and stabilization of petroleum prices. The balance of trade deficit was $9.8 million in 1980, a marked improvement from the 1979 level of $45.1 million. The mineral output for Belize accounted for only a fraction of 1% of the GDP. Such activity was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were primarily used in construction of the Northern Highway between Orangewalk and Belize City. Mineral resources are deficient or nonexistent in Belize for the majority of metals and nonmetals, although the Government and others continue to believe that petroleum must exist in Belize. The proximity to Mexican oilfields and the growing finds in the Peters area of Guatemala support this expectation. It is common practice when thermally drying coal from wet coal preparation facilities that the coarse +0.5mm fractions and fine fractions (-0.5mm) are combined and fed to a thermal dryer. There are very good reasons for this concept. The coal feed is much easier to handle in this condition for it is not as likely to stick inside the dryer or hang up in the material handling equipment, and is easier to feed and discharge. However, it is generally only the -0.5mm fines that really need to be dried. The +9.5m fraction of the cleaned coal will leave the dewatering screens, or drain and rinse screens, at an acceptable surface moisture, probably 5 or 5 ½ percent. The 9.5m x 0.5mm mesh fraction can be centrifuged to about 8 percent. The -0.5m fines can range from 18 to 22 percent or more, depending upon the type of equipment employed to dewater, and upon the size distribution within this size range.

From a computational point of view calculating a variogram is a perfectly simple operation. For any particular study, we know which variable is to be studied. We also have a good idea of structural parameters which are likely to be important (the scale of the phenomenon, the probable direction of the anisotropy, etc.). Finally, we know the structure of the data file. So we can specify the parameters to be used to calculate the variogram (the distance classes, the angular classes, etc.). This allows us to decide which variogram program is most appropriate (1, 2 or 3 dimensional data, regularly or irregularly spaced, etc. ) . In general, the basic statistics (mean, variance, correlation? etc.) have been calculated beforehand, and so the distribution of the data is already known. Consequently, the choice of the parameter values fed into the variogram is by no means arbitrary. But it must nevertheless be made before the' variogram is calculated. If the resulting variogram is not satisfactory, the whole sequence of operations has to be repeated. Before going on to see how this can be avoided, it is worthwhile having a brief look at the common causes of "unsatisfactory" variograms.

"Plastic Filled Valley (PFV) wire rope represents a significant development over the design of conventional wire rope. A sealing thermoplastic is impregnated under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure into a conventional lubricated wire rope to produce a lattice of plastic which surrounds and separates the strands from each other and from the core. Metal-to-metal contact is thereby alleviated and the lubricant is sealed in. The wear resistance, rope breaking load, fatigue resistance and crushing resistance are all increased. The result is a rope which offers exceptional service life.Laboratory tests carried out in Canada and at the University of Stuttgart, in West Germany, confirm the increase in fatigue life. The field trials conducted so far have indicated that the results obtained in the laboratory can be duplicated in the field.IntroductionIn times of double -digit inflation, the consideration given to operating costs throughout industry commands considerable attention. The same can be said of the mining industry. A set of large-diameter wire ropes used on the huge draglines in strip mining can cost in excess of $100,000. Because a machine may use three sets of rope s each year, it is clear that the costs of wire rope can contribute a considerable percentage to any operating budget. As wire rope is a product which is used extensively throughout the mining industry, it would appear timely to turn our attention to any ""Method of Extending Wire Rope Service Life"" in order that wire rope life can be optimized and wire rope costs can be minimized."

For the past few years, the Cyprus Bagdad Copper Company began experiencing a significant "ore-dilution" problem from its low grade open- pit copper mine located at Bagdad, Arizona. To pinpoint the causes of this dilution, a study was initiated to investigate as well as to improve in-pit ore-waste selection-procedures using conditionally simulated ore-bodies. Prior to the actual use of conditional simulation; a comparison of different estimation methods for a mined-out area in the pit was performed. Specifically, kriging estimates were compared against the original estimates of the company which were based on the polygonal approach. The results of this comparison clearly identified part of the so- called "ore-dilution" problem, which was the initial over-estimation of average ore grades from blast rounds, using the polygonal approach. The results from the use of conditionally simulated orebodies demonstrated that the "ore-dilution" problem can be reduced by more than half if in-pit ore- waste selection is based on the kriged estimates rather than the polygonal estimates. This simulation study also showed that the current use of the polygonal approach has the effect of shipping a larger tonnage of lower grade material to the mill.

INTRODUCTION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is a relatively low-cost instrument developed by Hawkes and Bailey (1973) and was originally intended to monitor stress changes in mine pillars subjected to uniaxial stress changes. In this regard, this instrument has found considerable use by the mining industry. More recently, there have been attempts to use the stressmeter for determination of more general changes of the in situ rock stress. This paper reports on a study to characterize the performance of the rigid inclusion stressmeter for this application and presents results on the effect of anisotropic stress changes. These stress changes must be accounted for to properly analyze general changes of the in situ rock stress. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is an instrument designed to measure variations of the in situ stress around a borehole. The stressmeter studied in this work, is manufactured by Irad Gage, Div. Creare Products, Inc. Lebanon, New Hampshire. It consists of a stiff hollow steel gage body that is preloaded across a borehole diameter. The preloading is activated by sliding a wedge between an upper platen and the gage body. Aggregate resources should be considered primary factors in urban development. Resource planning is essential because land values, previous construction, or zoning restrictions often preempt exploitation of aggregate deposits within an urban area. Sequential land use practices allow development of area prior to urban development population and aggregate consumption trends in Austin, TX, indicate that substantial quantities of reserves will be lost to future development. Aggregate materials are present in nearby areas. However, a comparison of transportation and reclamation costs indicates that reclaiming land after mineral extraction can be significantly cheaper than transporting materials longer distances.

A full-scale geotechnical model of a 15-foot (4.6 m) wide coal mine entry in correlation with computer finite-element analysis (FEA) is being employed at the Bureau of Mines Spokane Research Center for basic research on roof-bolt support systems. Physical and computer modeling of various coal mine roof-bolt reinforcement systems will increase our basic knowledge of how roof supports function. This information, in correlation with computer FEA and underground verification tests, will provide a basis for establishing safer, more cost- effective roof control plans and help establish guidelines for employing fully grouted and conventional bolting systems. The basic rationale for the research, research approach, methods and equipment employed, results to date, and future research plans are described in this paper.

"The historical transformations in fire -resistant conveyor belt compositions in the past 20 years have been influenced by factors of material cost, changing flame and burn test requirements, material replacements, adhesion and oil resistance considerations, increased responsibility and legal liability. Specifically, this has resulted in a swing from neoprene-cotton belts to S.B.R. blends and synthetic fibre carcasses, and tighter quality control and documentation of test data.Flame dynamics are discussed and the function and performance of the multiple types of flame-resistant additives in the flame front are presented. Specific flame and burn test requirements are described. The belt manufacturers' requirements and criteria in selecting the types of flame-resistant additives are presented.The author will describe the composition of the types of flame-resistant compounds used in a practical production, the belts that are available on today's mark et and future developments in requirements that may further transform the composition of fire-resistant belts.IntroductionThe historical transformations of conveyor belt compositions in the past two decades have been based on factors common to those leading to changes in man y organic compositional products. These factors are material cost, new materials, the customer' s changing requirements, government regulation s and increased manufacturer' s liability.As a basis for understanding the product, I will provide a brief breakdown of the conveyor belt composite. Figure 1 represents a cross section of a typical belt. A skim rubber coats each fabric ply of the belt carcass and is of a different rubber composition than the outside layer of rubber which forms the cover. This outside cover layer is designed to protect the belt from environmental factors such as heat, oil and abrasion, and other factors involved in the service condition s under which the belt will operate. In the case of fire-retardant belt s, both the skim coat encapsulating the fabric plies and the outer cover must contain sufficient fire retardancy to overcome the contribution to burning of the decomosition products of the fabric."

The overall purpose of this research was to improve the understanding of how the post disaster seismic location system works, what determines the signal size, what is the character of the seismic noise, how well the system can detect blows from a trapped miner, and how well the source of the blows can be located. Based on an improved understanding of the system, improvements were suggested in the seismic subarray configuration, and in the system deployment procedures. An important part of this research was to become familiar with the seismic system operation and to work with the Westinghouse Electric Corporation and MSHA personnel to modify and improve the system. To accomplish this we participated in the planning, execution, and data analysis for a number of seismic field tests. Several in-mine field tests were conducted. From these tests the capabilities of an in-mine seismic system were analyzed and specifications were made for designing an operational in-mine system. Several portions of the work done on this grant were covered in previous reports. In particular the capabilities or the presently operational surface based seismic location system has been thoroughly documented by Durkin and Greenfield (1981). Portions of the location procedures and effects of mine openings on seismic signals have also previously been published. These portions or the work will only be summarized in this final report.

Fatigue is the primary cause of failure of structural and mechanical components subject to dynamic loading. Recognition of this basic fact and the development of appropriate techniques and details are important in the design and repair of off highway trucks (OHTs). The frames and appendages of OHTs and other mobile plant used in the Pilbara are subject to tough operating conditions. Any fatigue-prone details quickly show up and become a maintenance liability of considerable concern. Much of this equipment is approaching the limit of its fatigue life and maintenance managers face decisions on whether to repair or replace. Even new equipment often contains some poor details which suffer distress soon after commissioning. In those cases a repair is required which will reinstate the detail to its original intended design life. Repair details must be practical and cost effective. They must also be tailored to the capability and expertise available in the field or in local manufacturers' establishments. This is particularly important where original equipment was manufactured overseas and long delivery times are involved. Lessons are drawn from components which have failed, using the evidence constructively, to provide an upgraded part or an improved substitute. With the experience now available it is relatively easy to extrapolate to cover new problem areas. This paper describes specialised techniques of mechanical fastening and detailing for low fatigue susceptibility, built up over many years of experience with OHTs and other mining plant and equipment in the Pilbara.
