Recently, the Korean government prepared a strategy for deep seabed mining, which consists of three stages for 20 years until 2010. The first step of the program is focused to conduct deep seabed exploration until 1993. The apparent "hurry-and-spend to catch-up" policy that the Korean government has shown in deep seabed mineral exploration was motivated by an effort to qualify a prerequisite requirement to be a pioneer investor as a developing country under the terms of Resolution II and the New York Understanding. Since 1983, KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute) under the auspices of the Korean government has carried out deep seabed mineral exploration. The KORDI had a joint exploration program with USGS from 1989 to 1991 aiming to evaluate the potentiality of manganese nodule in the western part of Clarion-Clipperton Zone as well as that of manganese crusts in the western Pacific. In 1992, Korean government accelerates its program by the confirmation of national policy and the equipment of new built research vessel, Onnuri-Ho. The RIV Onnuri-Ho is about 1400 G/T, which is equipped with various advanced instruments including GPS, multi-beam echosounder (Seabeam 2000), multi-channel seismic system, and MDM system.

Mine management now recognizes the value of computer-based truck-shovel dispatching in open pit mines. The key tangible benefits are substantial productivity increases with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, significant reductions in equipment required to meet production quotas. In this work, we review the literature, report on efficient, optimal algorithms for haul truck dispatching in real-time, and briefly discuss methods used by various mines to evaluate productivity improvements over manual methods. We also present actual results obtained at thirteen mining operations around the world.

The strength of coal mass saturated with gas is an essential parameter in studying the mechanism of gas and coal outburst,and its prediction method. Up to now, there has not been a method for determining the strength of coal mass saturated with gas.This paper describes a new method whereby the strength of in-situ coal mass can be determined and stored continuously and automatically. The simulation results obtained in the laboratory indicate that the new method allows a fast, reliable, inexpensive and convenient determination of the strength of coal mass.

During sulphide ore grinding, electrochemical interactions between grinding medium and the minerals play a significant role in bringing out enhanced ball wear on the one hand and alter the surface property of the ground minerals on the other. The role of the flotation reagents added simultaneously during grinding with respect to ball wear as well as flotation is yet to be established. Electrochemical measurements such as rest potential, combination potential and galvanic current between sulphide mineral and ball material couples have been carried out in the presence and absence of flotation reagents to understand the nature of electrochemical interactions between ball material and sulphide mineral. Electrochemical mechanisms and models have been proposed to explain the role played by the flotation reagents during different binary, ternary and quaternary interactions with respect to ball wear during grinding.

This paper describes how a back-propagation neural network is built for predicting the properties of engineering materials from their other properties, compositions or processes. A predicted result of the impact toughness of a 12Cr-2Ni-1.5Mo stainless steel from its tempering temperature is presented. Furthermore, the combination of this neural network for prediction is able to supplement the unpredictability of the expert system outside its domain of expertise. An integrated system may perform more intelligently and solve more complex problems as well as human expert, in some case even better.

Due to record low tin prices and an uncompetitive position in world markets, the Renison tin mine has undergone three major phases of restructuring in the last three years. This has involved substantial job losses, almost all of which have been through voluntary retrenchments. Retrenchments took place in 1988, 1990 and 1991.The last phase of restructuring was the most dramatic, as many aspects of the operation of the mine were changed. New pay structures were introduced, and the miners' contract system was scrapped. Drastic pay cuts occurred in many areas, although the opportunity was also taken to increase pay at some of the lower levels where inequities existed. Work practices were changed, as was the management structure.

Antimony has been utilized by mankind for thousands of years. However, due to recent environmental concerns, antimony is often considered to be an impurity element, Since antimnoy is commonly found in precious metal refractory ore bodies, extraction is essential. The Sunshine Mine in Kellogg, Idaho has recovered antimony from its precious metal tetrahedrite deposits since the 1940's. A plant was initially constructed as a primary antimony source during World War II. This facility also decreased the downstream smelting penalty for the silver copper-lead concentrate and provided an industrial commodity from a potential environmental nuisance.' This paper describes the Sunshine antimony processing- facility. Specifically, the relevant process chemistries involved in concentrate leaching, metal electrowinning, and sodium antimonate production will be discussed. In addition, ongoing areas of research to improve unit operations and treatments implemented to meet environmental' discharge requirements will be covered.

The Directional Drill Monitor (DDM) is an advanced instrument for real time in hole surveying. It was developed by Du Pont (Australia) to suit Australian gassy coal mining conditions. The instrument consists of three units: i. Down hole transmitter ii. Acoustic transducer iii. Data receiver processor unit (i.e. up hole unit). This paper describes the function of each unit in detail and highlights the importance of the DDM in long hole drilling efficiency. Surveying is carried out independent of hole depth. Each survey takes 2-3 minutes to complete, the frequency of surveying to control borehole trajectory is determined by the accuracy required for a particular hole.

A small scale continuous flotation cell was designed and constructed at Noranda Technology Centre to develop a mobile testing flotation circuit located next to the production circuit. This mobile small scale flotation pilot plant can easily and economically be set up at any circuit in a mill and used to evaluate and predict plant performance against a given flotation condition. The main feature of the cell, beside the provisions of automatic pulp level and feed rate control, is to provide a reduced surface to volume ratio approaching to that of an industrial machine. This paper describes the basic design and the results of various testwork carried out to date including aeration, conditioning, reagents, recirculation, flotation gas, etc. are presented in comparison with the plant production results.

The purpose of this work is to determine the influence of sample length or size on the value of variance (Semivariogram) to select the suitable length that is required to the geostatistical computations of ore evaluation. Three cases in Ghorabi Iron Ore were studied. The first one was on the iron fraction (Fe%) at which the semivariogram gave an evidence to good continuity of the fraction in the ore. In this case, the length of sample has not important influence. The second case was for the Mn% component of the same area where the semivariogram has a nugget effect. The selected length for this case was 4 meters. The Cl% fraction of the ore was the third case where the anisotropic phenomena was appeared and the suitable length is 3 meters.

Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines' lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for more than 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars" left between them. These pillars range up to 100 m (330 ft) long by 40 m (130 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) thick. Hudson Bay have been successful in removing these pillars by using cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel load-haul-dump equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has required that many innovative techniques be tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined. Background Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is located in Manitoba some 800 km (500 miles) north of Winnipeg and 200 km (125 miles) by road from the Hudson Bay smelter complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. I). There are currently three producing underground mines and one open pit operating at the Snow Lake Division, producing copper and zinc concentrates. Pillar recovery is intensive and vital to continued production of these mature mines. The crown pillars are producing more than 50% of the current mine production. This figure will increase in the future. The two mines at which crown pillar recovery is taking place and that will be discussed are the 400 t/d (440 stpd) Rod Mine and the 1000 t/d (1100 stpd) Stall Lake Mine, both five-day-a-week producers. Crown pillar mining has been applied for some time at these mines. However, it was only recently that the crown pillars became vital to production. This has necessitated a number of innovative techniques to recover them.

The paper reports on the experimental work and results obtained in processing a xenotime concentrate. The rare earth resource concentrate has been treated by three different methods namely, hydrothermal leaching, alkali roasting and alkali pugging or baking. The recovery in hydrothermal leaching with caustic soda at 150-160°C has been 89%. En comparison, processes involving alkali roastings with soda ash at 850°C and with caustic soda at 500°C, and alkali pugging or baking with caustic soda at 200°C have given recovery values close to 100%

The Jewett Mine is located in two East Central Texas Counties, Leon County and Freestone County. The area is primarily suited for agriculture with approximately 90% of its agricultural income coming from beef cattle and hogs. In addition to livestock both of these counties produce hay, oats for grazing, pecans and corn. There are 1,101 farms and/or ranches in Freestone County consisting of 381,248 acres. Less than 15% of this acreage is harvested croplands. Leon County has 1,227 farms and/or ranches for a total of 442,387 acres, of which less than 13% is harvested cropland. Total annual agricultural sales for Leon County are approximately $36 million and Freestone County has approximately $21 million. Ninety percent of the annual agricultural sales derive from livestock.

Prospectivity, the relative value of gold, investor confidence, general economic stability and legislation driven by public attitudes are seen as the major influences on the gold mining industry in New Zealand. Since the 1860s the gold mining industry in New Zealand has been subject to the complex interaction of these influences resulting in three successive boom and bust periods. The booms are related to periods of greatest potential economic growth. The busts are more strongly related to downturns in the economy and falling gold price. The influences may be expressed as trends over time. The role of gold has changed from being a currency base to that of a traded commodity. This change has caused price instability and rapid fluctuations in its value. Increased competing land uses, shifting public attitudes and legislative changes have added to the instability of the industry. Reaction against change is to be expected from the companies until new legislation is seen to be functioning efficiently. Other trends show that there has been a tendency towards reduced exploration and consolidation of active gold mining projects. The future consequences of this are likely to be felt both regionally and nationally as there will be no new discoveries to fill production voids which will develop as currently producing mines close. The review of New Zealand's resource use statutes is nearly complete. A period of legislative stability can now be expected. There are some positive signs that consents will be obtained much more quickly than under previous legislation, particularly by those companies which develop the skills to work with the system. The new regime is about consideration of impacts rather than specific activities. This, together with excellent prospectivity, bodes well for the identification of mineral resources in New Zealand.

The DEAREX knowledge acquisition and engineering system is a teaching and exploration tool designed to facilitate the under- standing and development of expert systems by explorationists without the aid of a knowledge engineer and without recourse to expert system languages. To fulfill its objective, the DEAREX system considers the selection of exploration methods in desert areas. The system consists of three parts: 1. A tutorial which introduces the basic and selected advanced concepts of expert systems, 2. A sample program illustrating how an expert system works and can be used, and, most importantly, 3. A knowledge acqusition and engineering program which enables users to develop their own expert systems. The tutorial provides a brief and concise introduction to expert systems, a 10 rule exploration example which defines, explains and illustrates the basic concepts and design of expert systems, and a glossary of expert system terms including cross references. The sample program is a larger, self contained example of an expert system with some commentary illustrating addition- al expert system concepts and the role of the knowledge engineer in particularizing rules and ascertaining the knowledge base. Restricting itself to the selection of exploration methods in desert areas, the knowledge acquisition and engineering program questions the user and converts the answers into an expert system. Questions pertain to geology, infrastructure, availability of instrumentation, personnel, etc. Additional information may also included. In conclusion, some salient points concerning knowledge engineering toolkits, shells and knowledge acquisition capabilities such as contained in DEAREX are discussed.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines publication presents a case study of the processes used in permitting the Nome Offshore Placer Project, a gold mining project offshore Nome, Alaska which operated from 1985 through 1990. The mining project, developed by Western Gold Exploration and Mining Company, Limited Partnership (WestGold), used the BIMA, which was at the time the largest bucketline mining vessel in the world, to dredge gold from the ocean floor. This case study reviews the permitting process from the regulators' and industry's perspectives, as well as characterizing the efficiencies and inefficiencies associated with this case. The Federal, State and local laws applicable to the Nome Offshore Placer Project are identified, agency jurisdiction and interagency relationships are explored, and the chronology of the permitting process is examined. The regulatory authorities for both environmental monitoring and post-mining monitoring are delineated. Significant milestones affecting the project and required regulatory submittals are also included. The case study of the Nome Offshore Placer Project is detailed with respect to agency involvement and coordination, approaches to permitting from both the regulators' and developer's perspective, environmental issues, and permit stipulations which were unique to the project. The advantages and disadvantages of these topics are discussed.

Comprehensive world mineral industry investment data do not exist, but limited material published on aggregates of in vestment in some elements of the world mineral industry suggest a continued up-turn in the investment level, at least in market economy countries in 1989. Steel industry investments in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries are not yet available for 1989 but, as shown in table 6, increased by 22.1% in 1988, after showing a decrease of 5.2% (revised) in 1987. The pattern of investment ups and downs varied during 1988 within country blocs and economic alliances showing no particular trends. Investment in the steel industry by the United States increased by 58.3% between 1987 and 1988 and was 1 1.9% higher than the previous highest amount invested during the 1984-88 period but was still 41.5% less than the amount invested in 1983. Investment in the steel industries of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) dropped again in 1988 from the revised amount for 1987, which became the first drop after several years of steady growth in what became the expanded ECSC in 1986. This drop in 1988 was the result of lower investments by Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Nether- lands, and Spain, investments grew or remained level in Belgium, Portugal, and the United Kingdom in 1987 and 1988. A decrease in investment in the Canadian (-26.6%) steel industry was offset by in- creases registered by the members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) of 31.7%, by Japan of 19.8% by Turkey of 22.4%, and a slight increase by the nations of Latin America. If data for the world steel industry as a whole, including those of the centrally planned economy countries, were available, the same pattern presumably would be shown as that reported; that is, it would remain fairly stable, with increases in some countries being offset by decreases in others. However, the lack of comprehensive information on the centrally planned economy countries makes it impossible to determine whether the overall trend was up or down despite recorded increases or decreases in production of the materials involved. Background The mine is located in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. Cambria County is located within the Allegheny Mountain section of the Appalachian Plateau Province. The geologic structures in the mine area included folds, faults, joints and cleats in the coal. These geologic structures seem to have genetic relationships with the Allegheny Front (lannacchione and Puglio, 1979). The mine's geologic structures have been influenced mainly by Ebensburg Anticline and Wilmore Syncline (Watson, 1979). Current longwall panels lay along the western limb of the Wilmore Syncline oriented south 30° west. Surface topographic relief in the area is less than 152 m (500 ft) and overburden thickness varies from 183 to 244 m (600 ft to 800 ft). The coal seam in the mine is part of the Lower Kittanning Formation. The thickness of the B-seam is the subject of discussion. It varies from 1.2 to 1.5 m (48 to 60 in.) and consists of two parts. The lower part is 1.1 to 1.2 m (44 to 48 in.) of soft coal and the remainder is bony coal. The coal seam dips slightly from 0° to 6° to the east-south direction. Panel entries are driven 61 m (200 ft) wide, consisting of three 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries and two pillars 24.4 x 30.5 m (80 x 100 ft) centers. The mine has a history of cutter roof problems in the entries (Fig. 1) that has delayed the advance rate of entry development considerably and the cost of maintaining those entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports (Fig. 2). Due to excessive convergence in the headgate, installation of additional support and often resetting of steel beam, to provide enough clearance, in these entries imposed additional delay during the retreat of the longwall face, as the shearer cuts coal adjacent to the headgate and shield support at the headgate needs to advance under the steel beams (Fig. 3). "IntroductionCopper has been recycled ever since its discovery. Even in Graeco-Roman times recycling of this resistant, and thus valuable material was carried out as a matter of course. Just take, as an early example, the Colossus of Rhodes: after the figure collapsed during an earthquake, the bronze parts were melted down into ingots and sold.Copper is a material which can be recycled again and again because copper produced from recycling is not different from copper originating from primary materials. This is mainly due to electrolytical copper refining whereby not only the base metals but also the precious metals can be removed. In contrast, with aluminum and iron only the more electropositive elements can be removed by refining, and the resultant scrap must, therefore, be sorted mechanically into various alloys for subsequent smelting.The recycling rate for different base metals is given in Table 1. Despite this ideal prerequisite, the generally quoted recycling rate of copper of about 40070 appears rather low. However, it must not be forgotten that the recycling rate is defined as the ratio of the annually utilized quantities of copper scrap and the annual production figures (Table 2). Moreover due to the economic growth over the last 30 years the availability of copper from scrap materials is lower than its consumption because copper is principally employed in very long-life consumer durables and only returns to the recycling circuit after many years.
