The ability of conveyor belts to transport large mass throughputs economically over previously unprepared ground has resulted in this system achieving great and extensive use. A significant component in this development is the conveyor belt itself. The development of high strength steel cord conveyor belts involves the optimising of splice design, the use of excellent rubber material especially in the splice, good craftsmanship during splice production and modern field vulcanisation equipment. The durability of a splice for belts of class St 3000 up to St 790 is expressed by the fatigue strength under dynamic stress. The results obtained with a test method and equipment developed by the University of Hannover indicate the present state of the art in this field. Belts of high nominal strength used on inclined long distance conveyors reach splice fatigue strengths of about 3000 N/mm. The design should only exploit approximately 50% of the fatigue strength determined in the tests as maximum operating stress. IMPORTANCE OF CONVEYOR BELT SYSTEMS The use of conveyor belt technology has expanded considerably over the last decades in the bulk goods transportation sector. Because of the favourable transport costs and the technology's adaptability to specific topographies, belt conveyors frequently represent the most economic solution. When flows of goods are large, as in German lignite mining operations, where masses of up to 40,000 t/h are given, it is the only technically feasible alternative. The use of belt conveyor systems allows the sensible distribution of the waste and the production of the coal (Hager, 1981). But this transportation alternative is also suitable when the masses involved are smaller. Whereas conveyor belts were only suitable for loose bulk goods up until a few years ago, today they are frequently also used for hard rock open cast mines, e.g. in the production of copper ore. Because of the favourable transport costs it is frequently still economic to use mobile crushers with a throughput of up to 10,000 t h 6 which breakdown the large blocks produced y explosives into transportable grain sizes. In many operations, trucks are only used to provide flexibility between the excavator and the crusher, i.e. over short routes, and the long, frequently steep, transport paths to the processing plant or to the spreader are undertaken by belt conveyors (Einenkel et al., 1992). The advantages of belt conveyors, i.e. to cope with large mass flows over inclines and down slopes of up to 1:4 have resulted in this system gaining very extensive use throughout the world. The conveyors can be installed over for the most part unprepared ground with suitable vertical radii, adapted to the locally available belt material. In the process individual conveyor belts with lengths of up to 15 km, and in the underground sector with lift heights of up to 1 km, have been built and operated. This great variety of application possibilities is complemented by a limited ability to pass through horizontal curves. This can be achieved with the help of design measures on the conveyor whilst bearing in mind the characteristics of the belt. STRESSING OF CONVEYOR BELTS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANT The advantage of conveyor belts compared with other systems is also to be found in the large available service-time window, i.e. the excellent reliability and the low costs of energy consumption and maintenance. It is in particular the reliability of a belt transport system which depends to a great degree on its main component, that is the belt - in all its different types and variations. For this reason, the belt is also given the greatest attention in the development of the individual components, because it is the belt which must be designed optimally with regard to various factors. At a selected pH, hydrothermal oxidation of chalcopyrite was carried out under controlled F+,, at elevated pressures and temperatures (172-200°C) by balancing the rate of oxygen injection against the rate of consumption. Chalcopyrite was converted to covellite (CuS) and digenite (CU1.8S) with rejection of iron and sulfur to the solution. Covellite forms in the first stage, followed by nucleation and growth of digenite in the second stage. The effects of rapid and slow injection of stoichiometric quantities of oxygen are compared. Both the covellite and digenite form a porous layer occupying the same volume as the original chalcopyrite grain. An electrochemical kinetic model is presented to correlate the observed results.

Jointing of steel rods in reinforced concrete structures needs careful consideration as it renders the structure weak at the joint. The jointing is usually done at sections of structural members, where the bending moment and shear force are least. Jointing is done either by overlapping the rods or welding or by mechanical splicing. A novel method of jointing them is by inserting the two rods in a steel sleeve and cladding it on to the rods by subjecting the sleeve to explosive energy. A rod jointed in this fashion is tested for direct tension and bending when used in a reinforced concrete beam. The test results show that it is an effective method. The advantage is that a number of joints can be made in a single operation.

A static method for vapor pressure measurement up to 1450 K and above 1 hPa is presented. The method is designed for equilibrium and kinetic studies of metallic systems, including those with a chemical reaction. Congress, under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, as amended, charged the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with the responsibility for safe and permanent disposal of high-level radioactive waste in a geologic repository. The waste will consist of spent fuel from commercial nuclear generating plants and reprocessing activities. Under direction of this law DOE is currently evaluating Yucca Mountain in Southern Nevada as the candidate site for a potential high-level radioactive waste repository. Presidential, Congressional and State of Nevada approval are needed for repository construction to proceed after successful completion of site characterization and recommendation of the site to Congress. The DOE will submit a license application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to construct the geologic repository. Following successful construction DOE will update its license application to operate the repository.

Introduction Flotation is a recovery process that utilizes natural or chemically-introduced hydrophobicity of minerals to separate ore from gangue by attaching the ore particles to bubbles. Flotation has been known since 1906, when it was patented by E. L. Sulman, H. G. K. Pickard and John Ballot. Flotation's first documented plant use was in 1911, when it was used on gravity tailings from a zinc plant. Cyanide leaching was first patented in 1887. Most early precious metals flotation was linked to lead or copper concentrates. Most precious metal flotation is linked to sulfide recovery and utilizes such reagents as xanthates, dithiophosphates and thiocarbanilides. But the involvement of flotation in precious metals recovery does not have to be limited to active flotation of the gold and silver bearing minerals. Flotation can be used to remove interfering minerals, such as carbon, or cyanicides, such as copper, arsenic bearing minerals or other cyanide complexing minerals. Cyanide Leaching The use of cyanide to recover precious metals is the backbone of the industry. The various recovery processes that use cyanide are: 1. Leaching-Counter Current Decantation(CCD) Merrill-Crowe 2. Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) 3. Carbon-in-leach (CIL) 4. Vat leaching 5. Heap leaching These processes are selected depending on ore grade, ore leaching characteristics, reserve size and capital limitations. Ore grade is used as the first criteria to determine the type of cyanide plant required. However, the reserve size can determine whether a ground ore alternative is used. The ore leaching characteristics may indicate that the higher recovery, associated with a process that employs grinding, is the only economic recovery alternative. There are some extremely large leaching plants with grades that would be non-economic for some existing heap leach plants. Many factors, such as strip ratios, metal recovery and reserve size, determine what the ultimate plant design will be. The exact processing scheme that is used, is a multifaceted decision matrix, which gives the process metallurgist some job security. Precious Metal Recovery Using Flotation Flotation recovery can conceivably be used on any ore that has been ground. Many operations utilize gravity separation on the ore to remove native gold from the ore prior to sending it to cyanide leaching. A rapid infrared forming technique has been developed to fabricate titanium matrix composites. This technique applies infrared heating to infiltrate titanium alloys into carbon and silicon carbide prepregs. The entire process typically takes 1-2 minutes in an inert atmosphere. The advantages of this technique are that the process is fast, simple, does not require a vacuum or a high external pressure. The process is very economical both in energy conservation and operation costs. This technique has been used to produce void free composites with limited, well controlled fiber-matrix reactions and mechanical properties comparable to currently available titanium matrix composites.

Size reduction is very energy intensive and is the single most power-intensive operation in mineral processing plants. Research has shown that only a small part of the energy is utilized efficiently. One of the major thrusts of all equipment manufacturers has been to improve this efficiency. Choosing the right equipment to maximize energy utilization in any comminution application has always been the utmost criteria. Due to the high energy cost and depletion of good grade minerals, it is becoming essential to optimize all the subsystems within a given comminution system for the overall economic success of such ventures. Bradley Pulverizer Company of Allentown, Pennsylvania recognized this and started offering its Feeder Controller in 1988 for automatic feed control. After its first successful operation, Bradley made this as a part of all of their grinding system standard offering. It was also recognized that the Feeder Controller was just a beginning and more automation and controls would be required for an overall, efficient grinding system.

Mining claims must have a discovery of a valuable mineral deposit to be valid. When required, a Federal government mineral examiner makes a determination of validity and recommendations thereof to authorized management officials. The examiner should show whether or not an existing mining operation, or a proposed operation have economic viability. This is accomplished through an analysis of legal entities, land status and use, geologic and mineralogic relationships, and mining, milling and processing techniques considered in an appropriate economic evaluation framework. A framework involves market and market entry studies, reserve analyses, all costs analysis, royalty buyouts, tax structure, discount rate of return, and escalation and risk factors. An income approach to value is then used by means of a simple or complex discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to certify validity. Whether one claim is owned by a single miner, or hundreds of claims are owned by a large corporation, thorough, fair, consistent, and appropriate economic concepts should be applied by the mineral examiner.

A computer simulation of the automatic control of continuous mining machines has been prepared, similar to previous simulations of longwall mining systems and coal thickness sensors. The simulation allows for programmed variation of the horizon detection method, the azimuthal guidance system, the type and configuration of the miner, varying hardness in the unmined face material (leading to varying error in the machine heading), and the miner's cutting cycle. It simulates control of the miner in three axes. Use of the simulator makes it possible to anticipate problems arising from the complex character of underground mining, which include unpredictable multi-pass coupling and unpredictable variation in geological conditions.

"The proposed classification of ore reserves based on geostatistical and economic parameters is designed to be used as a communication tool to identify for investors, bankers, and financial analysts the degree of risk associated with a specific class of ore reserves. The class designation identifies the degree of accuracy of the estimates for tonnage and grade of annual production volumes of ore. It thus enables decision makers to quantify the risks and uncertainties inherent to the ore reserve in achieving over-all economic goals and annual financial objectives.IntroductionDuring the evaluation, in 1980, of the Creede silver deposit in Colorado, U.S.A., as a potential bulk mining project, the authors were faced with the problem of conveying to senior management the risks and uncertainties that are implied by using common or conventional classification systems to categorize ""ore reserves"". The estimated numbers for tonnages and grade of the projected ore reserves represented the only entry for future revenue from the project. It was, therefore, necessary to convey to management the level of risk associated with those numbers when implementing further stages of development, and to convey what impact significant differences would have on the profitability of the project. The desire to quantify these risks led to a revised definition of ""ore"" and to a re-examination of the classification system of ""ore reserves"". Traditional methods for estimating tonnage and grade of reserves do not include a quantification of the errors of these estimates. The advent of geostatistical methods made this quantification possible. The proper application of geostatistical methods, with adequate geological input and a reliable set of sample data, is essential to its validity.Others have proposed a classification of ore reserves based on geostatistical parameters. Diehl and David (1982) recognized ""that concepts of proven, probable and possible have to be linked to the production rate or time horizon"". Royle (1977) had also addressed this problem. Forsyth (1987) pointed out that bankers are concerned with ""the probability that the variability will fall within a certain degree of accuracy"" especially for grade estimates, and would like to see grades expressed together with the error of the estimate at the 950Jo confidence level."

The new St. Clair River International Tunnel Project presented unique challenges in planning, permitting and approval. The project straddles the border between the Province of Ontario and the State of Michigan necessitating the review of U.S. approval legislation that has not been used in 60 years. The preparation of an environmental impact report to satisfy the legislative requirements for the Federal laws of the U.S. and Canada as well as the Province of Ontario and the State of Michigan presented a daunting task. In all, over 200 external contacts were made in carrying out the environmental approvals and permitting work. The definition of the alternatives including the NULL option were documented along with the impacts and mitigation measures. A "Modified Delphi" technique, along with other methodologies, was used for alternative evaluation and selection. A formal and informal public consultation process was undertaken which involved over forty major presentations and external meetings. A unique alternative to the traditional design, tender, build contracting practice was adopted; The Negotiated Compressed Process (NCP).

Nickel smelting and converting can be viewed as processes in which iron is either partitioned or transported between matte and slag. Metal recovery depends on the mass of iron transported to slag, the thermodynamic environment in which the transport is made, and the extent to which the slag, once formed, is left in contact with the matte. The importance of these effects is discussed with reference to a new equation which describes metal recovery in terms of a mass balance and a thermodynamically related parameter which is easily measured in practice.

Research performed by the U.S. insurance industry has determined that mine subsidence is uninsurable. Consequently, the insurance industry has decided not to voluntarily offer mine subsidence insurance. The U.S. Department of the Interior has long been investigating the effects of mine subsidence. These investigations have resulted in Federal regulations and controls of mine subsidence. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report generally describes mine subsidence, the development of mine subsidence insurance programs, and the eight current mine subsidence insurance programs in the United States. The States that have these subsidence programs include Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Major aspects of the programs include history, administrative and operational procedures, insurable structures, recognition of mine subsidence, major exclusions, claims, insurance premiums, and the economic health of each program. Addresses of agencies involved with mine subsidence insurance are also given. Information within this report can be useful for residential and commercial property owners and mine operators. States that are considering starting or have an existing mine subsidence insurance program can also use this report as a model for initiating or modifying their programs.

In contrast to pyrometallurgy's six thousand year history in the production of metals, that of hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it at all was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in wpper production in the present century, paricularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching, and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. Solvent extraction has become a major factor during the past quarter century by permitting novel leaching technology which produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulphuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends which should grow in importance in the future with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed briefly and key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared to that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

Introduction Gravity-based coal/mineral preparation plants must be operated to yield products of a quality satisfactory to existing markets. However, because of historic control problems, recovery is frequently sacrificed to achieve quality, resulting in losses of valuable product. Plant control has ranged from intuitive in-plant spot quality judgments made by various operators to gross methods involving such devices as density gauges, floats, grabsample on-the-spot sink/float tests, etc. Millions of tons of quality coal/minerals are lost to refuse each year, because of the historic lack of a continuous and dependable control system. The result is serious economic, as well as environmental, losses. While the economic losses are obvious, the less obvious environmental ones, in the case of coal, result from the misplacement of more ignitable quality fuel to refuse banks. Until recently, a control system capable of supplying a market-grade coal/mineral product, while continuously minimizing product losses to refuse, has been technologically unavailable. Coal/Mineral Washing Tracer System Performance Monitor (CMWTSPM) The first Coal/Mineral Washing Tracer System Performance Monitor (CMWTSPM) originated in the late 1970s as an innovative idea and ultimately resulted in Leonard Patent No. 4,345,994 issued on August 24, 1982. In a classic example of successful university basic research, the patent was followed by two US Department of Energy (DOE) merit awards for fundamental optimization research at the University of Kentucky, a number of publications, a successful applied research program (underwritten by SENTREX at Irvine, CA) and field tests at the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company Keystone Mine near Indiana, PA. The system is now operational and is marketed by SENTREX as the SENTREX Performance Monitor. A diagram of the system is shown in Fig. 1. This system relies on metal detection as the basic tracing medium. Since it is capable of tracing particles as fine as 0.19-in., the system is ideal for coarse coal/ mineral cleaning processes. Basically, the CMWTSPM records the distribution of synthetic coal/mineral particles, of known size and specific gravity, between product and refuse output streams of coal/mineral washing, gravity-concentrating processes. For any given particle size, surface area and shape are constant. The particles are [ ] designed to find their way into the center of their respective inprocess specific gravity/size streamlines. The system will yield a complete partition curve to show the percentage of misplacement for any selected size/specific-gravity particle fraction, thereby providing a point-to-point insight into process failure. When used to evaluate operational processes, this full partition curve is far more diagnostic than the simplifying, derivative, single index number known as the Ep value. The Ep value is commonly used for convenience to represent symmetrical partition curves, but, if the actual partition curve is non-symmetrical, use of the Ep value can result in serious diagnostic error. While the Ep is useful in design and for rapid performance evaluation and process adjustment, the full partition curve is by far the more diagnostic. It will provide insight into the behavior of particulate flow, through non-symmetry, as a means to highlight potential systemic failures. Performance of the process is measured and improved by determining the extent of particle misplacement and by making timely adjustments to the unit to reduce the misplacement. Electrodeposition of lead metal from high purity brine electrolytes containing lead chloride (PbCI,) was conducted so as to assess the feasibility of electrowinning lead-metal directly from aqueous chloride electrolytes. Tests were performed at 65 and 80°C (338 and 353°K). Characteristic features of the deposits, on both lead and graphite substrates, were correlated to operating parameters associated with: electrolyte temperature, current density and total lead- concentration. Photomicrographs of these morphological features were obtained by use of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
