"A combined experimental and finite element approach to study the local heat transfer coefficient is presented in this paper. The heat transfer coefficients at different cooling regimes in a roll are quantified by an inverse heat conduction technique; the heat transfer phenomena involved are then discussed. A discussion of the application of the heat transfer information found in the present study for better design of a roll cooling system is also included. Finally, an identification of areas where further work is needed is presented.IntroductionIn metal rolling processes, the roll is used as a tool to deform the workpiece at very high speeds. As shown in Fig. 1, the heat transfer phenomena involved in the process are complicated by the interaction between the roll and the strip, mainly including 1) the heat transferred from the workpiece to rolls in the contact regions, 2) the heat created in the interface due to the deformation of the workpiece and the friction between the workpiece and roll, and 3) the heat removed by watercooling as well as the ambient air. All of these transport phenomena occur at extremely high pressure, high speed, and high heat flux; these make the control of the roll temperatures an extremely challenging problem.In hot rolling, proper cooling of rolls can lead not only to improve the roll shape quality by controlling the thermal crown of the roll, but also to extend the roll life by minimizing the thermally induced stresses [1,2]. Also, knowledge of roll temperatures can contribute to insights about the roll/workpiece interfacellubricant behavior, and lead to the desired surface condition of the workpiece. Therefore, adequate roll cooling or control of roll temperatures is of critical concern to mill designers and process engineers. In order to have proper operation of the process, a good understanding of the influence of cooling practices on the roll is essential [3]."

Under various state laws enacted mostly within the last 20 years, reclamation requirements and standards for hard-rock mining operations have been established virtually everywhere in the western United States. Unlike the uniform and detailed coal mine reclamation requirements under the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act ( "SMCRA" ) and state programs mode led after SMCRA, the various state law hard-rock mine reclamation requirements are based upon a variety of objectives, and therefore are subject to varying standards from state to state. While the diversity of reclamation requirements complicates the determination of what reclamation measures will be required at any particular mine, there are valid reasons for this diversity. There are dozens of different commodities mined in the United States, and mining methods are different for each commodity. Local natural conditions such as climate, precipitation, geology, hydrology, and biology vary widely across the county. Site-specific conditions also affect mining and reclamation methods. Also, factors such as economics, land use, and environmental protection issues receive different priorities in different states and communities within those states. State reclamation requirements in general provide the flexibility to consider site-specific circumstances, allowing operators to design and engineer the best reclamation measures for each mining site. To the mine developer or manager, reclamation requirements must be translated into design, operational, and closure measures for mine planning. Each of these measures must then be assigned additional costs to be factored into the economic decisions for a particular mining operation. On a broader level, reclamation costs must be factored into decisions such as where to invest in exploration and mine development. The purpose of this paper is to provide a summary of the state non-coal mine reclamation requirements in twelve western states. This summary comparison may be useful as a starting point in considering how local reclamation requirements will impact potential mining costs.

The term clay is somewhat ambiguous unless specifically defined, because it is used in three ways: 1) as a diverse group of fine-grained minerals, 2) as a rock term, and 3) as a particle size term. As a rock term, clay is difficult to define because of the wide variety of materials that comprise it; therefore, the definition must be general. Clay is a natural, earthy, fine grained material comprised largely of a group of crystalline minerals known as the clay minerals. These minerals are hydrous silicates comprised mainly of silica, alumina, and water. Several of these minerals also contain appreciable quantities of iron, alkalies, and alkaline earths. Many definitions state that a clay is plastic when wet. Most clay materials do have this property, but some clays are not plastic, e.g., halloysite and flint clay. As a particle size term, clay is used for the category that includes the smallest particles. The maximum size particles in the clay size grade are defined differently on various grade scales. Soil investigators and mineralogists generally use 2 pm. as the maximum size, whereas the widely used scale by Wentworth (1922) defines clay as material finer than approximately 4 pm. Some authorities find it convenient to use the term clay for any fine-grained, natural, earthy, argillaceous material (Grim, 1968). When used this way, the term includes clay, shale, or argillite, and some argillaceous soils. Even though no standard definition of the term clay is accepted by geologists, agronomists, engineers, and others, the term is generally understood by those who use it. Clay is an abundant natural raw material, and it has an amazing variety of uses and properties which will be discussed in this chapter. Clays rank among the leading industrial minerals in both tonnages produced and total value. Their importance is indicated in Table 1, which lists the 1988, 1989, and 1990 productions according to the US Bureau of Mines (Ampian, 1992). As industrial minerals, clays are a complex group that consists of several mineral commodities, each having somewhat different mineralogy, geologic occurrence, technology, and uses. In this section these commodities are organized as follows: 1) bentonite, 2) common clay, 3) hormites, and 4) kaolin. Fuller's earth is discussed in both the bentonite and hormite chapters. Fuller's earth is a term based on use, and both bentonites and hormites are sold as fuller's earth. The overlapping is particularly evident where both bentonite and non-bentonite fuller's earth are used for the same purposes or products, such as in drilling mud, bleaching or clarifying fats and oils, and carriers for insecticides and fertilizers. Kaolin, ball clay, halloysite, and refractory clays are grouped together because they consist mainly of minerals of the kaolin group. In a previous paper, it was shown that a lack of clear understanding of the role of initiation mode on detonation characteristics often leads to under-utilization of the explosive system in blasting. This is of particular significance since the very large number of explosive initiation practices currently in use implicitly assumes that the blasting performance of an explosive is largely independent of the exact mode of initiation. This paper deals specifically with bulk-loaded and pneumatically-loaded ANFO under various initiation modes in small diameters. These include initiation by booster and detonating cords of various strengths, and combination of cords and boosters. The nature of energy release and energy partitioning between shock and gas energy have been studied in the underwater test as a function of charge diameter. The paper describes the relative merits of various initiation modes for specific charge geometries and confinement, under end- and side-initiated conditions. Guidelines have also been formulated for use in the field to match initiation practice with blasting requirements.

In the Central African Copper Belt, sulfidization flotation is the standard practice for dolomitic copper oxide ores. It is a delicate process, and its plant application requires close control of the reagent addition. This paper presents the results of a thorough laboratory investigation. It features the monitoring, during sulfidization, of the pulp pH, the residual sulfide ion concentration and redox potential. Variables examined during the process were: retention times, sulfidizer additions, pH, collector type, dispersant dosage and reducing agent addition. Implications of the findings for plant application and process control are also briefly examined.

There is a large use of mercury in Brazil by the gold miners in the so called "garimpos" (non registered mining operations), where it is usual to recover the gold contained in the gravity concentrates by amalgamation, which is highly deleterious to environment if not conducted properly. Unfortunately, this is a common practice there. After presenting in brief the modus operandi generally practiced in the garimpos and the environmental problems, this work reviews some of the research conducted in CETEM according to two approaches: (i) replace amalgamation by other processes and (ii) develop technology to treat mercury-contaminated soils and effluents. Conventional processes like froth flotation, to recover gold from gravity concentrates, and centrifuges were considered. Also as alternatives to amalgamation, innovative process like the recovery of gold by coal-oil agglomerates and a technology that is currently under development in our laboratory, called gold-paraffin process, are described in brief, some results presented and their potential use assessed. To reclaim sites already polluted a technology was developed to float mercury selectively from contaminated soils. The potential use of centrifuges to pre-concentrate the mercury is also discussed. The scope for applying the last techniques is to concentrate the pollutants in a small volume of mass which would be suitable for recycling or isolation from the environment. A prospective technology to treat contaminated soils, or mercury concentrates, is the immobilization of mercury by adding inorganics. Concerning the ionic mercury which may be present in effluents, precipitation of the ions and flotation of the precipitates are being studied.

The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree. Abstract - The basis of the tomographic velocity imaging technique is briefly described and an application of the method to detect and image a cross-section through a chromite pod is presented. Using the chromite application as an example, the relative costs of tomographic data acquisition and processing are compared with those of diamond drilling to obtain similar resolution. A number of different tomographic survey configurations and the potential role of the method in surface and underground exploration are discussed.

The U.S. iron ore industry is located primarily in Northern Minnesota and Michigan's Upper Peninsula with one additional small plant in Missouri. There are currently some 10 plants operating that produce about 48 million tons per year of pellets. The major reagent use occurs in the three general areas of: flocculation, flotation and pellet additives. Minor areas of usage are for corrosion inhibition and dust suppression. Current practice as to types of reagents, consumption, and method of application are reviewed. The interaction of reagents with other parts of the process are discussed. Also included is a discussion of future reagent needs.

"Cupola melting is a complex physical and chemical process having a number of nonlinearities which make conventional process control difficult. In addition, sensors for both inputs and outputs of interest to the foundry operator are often difficult or impractical to apply in a production situation. The present work is an effort to control the process using both intelligent and conventional control techniques as appropriate. Neural networks are used as an inverse process model in a cascade, feedforward controller in conjunction with a finite difference model of the cupola. A separate implementation of the neural net serves as a stand-alone visualization tool; it can operate on a laptop computer and is a useful tool for the cupola operator. IntroductionThe goal of the present work is to develop a controller to improve the efficiency of cupola melting. Although cupola melting as a process has a long history, automatic control has been elusive because the process has been poorly understood. The purpose of this four-year program, which has been underway for about six months, is to develop a controller for the cupola process using intelligent and conventional control methods.The Cupola ProcessThe cupola furnace [1,2] is one of the oldest processes for making cast iron, and is still the dominant method. It takes the form of a water-cooled vertical cylinder, as large as 4 m in diameter and 20 m tall. The charge consists of scrap metal, alloying ingredients, limestone, and coke, which serves as fuel; it is composed by weight and fed through doors near the top of the cupola. Air, usually heated and often enriched with oxygen, is blown in near the bottom through tuyeres extending a short distance into the interior of the cupola. As the coke is consumed, the charge drops and melts. A continuous flow of iron emerges from the bottom of the furnace, at rates as high as 100 tons per hour, and. is transferred to casting lines in the foundry. The exhaust gases are drawn from the top of the cupola, where they are processed to meet pollution standards."

Sandstone paleo-channels encountered during coal mining operation can significantly slow down the advance in mining, and often completely shut-down coal mine production, with consequent extensive economic losses to the mine operator. Definition of the encountered channel usually involves intensive drilling; vertically from the surface and/or horizontally from underground vantage points. Coal operators with limited resources often resort to exploration by extending mine faces toward the channel. Both drilling and underground mining exploration are prohibitively expensive and usually provide only partial information about the location, size and shape of the sandstone channel. A low cost alternative which can also provide a more comprehensive picture of the channel is the application of Underground High Resolution Seismic Methods (UHRSM) developed and successfully tested by GECOH Exploration. UHRSM applies surface seismic reflection technology rotated as needed (usually 90 degrees) to accommodate the faces of the exposed channel, coal rib, or coal in front of the inclusion (sandstone channel, etc.). This entails placing high frequency seismic sources and geophones horizontally across these exposed faces. Refraction and reflection events from the front and back of the channel are isolated, analyzed and inverted, to calculate the channel's location and geometry. This paper presents a summary of the geophysical exploration technique and two case history examples where it was applied. In the first case, the accuracy of the technique was verified through subsequent mining. Mining is yet to commence in the second case. Both cases were applied to room-and-pillar nines where the irregular rib lines significantly extended the data processing effort. This suggests that UHRSM will find the easiest application when used along straight rib lines, but that is not a requisite to the application. The UHRSM should find ready application in longwall mining to delineate sandstone channels and other non-coal inclusions in the middle of the panels or ahead of the gate road faces.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated flotation hydrodynamics to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate. Fluid velocity profile measurements were used to characterize the hydrodynamics within commercial phosphate flotation cells and laboratory flotation cells. The effects of agitation, aeration, and pH on coarse phosphate recovery were measured in the laboratory flotation cells and correlated with the hydrodynamics measurements. Test results revealed that the agitation energy and aeration level had a significant effect upon flotation response. By optimizing these two parameters, 92 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a rougher flotation concentrate grading 28 pct P2O5?

Environmental regulation in Mexico has matured dramatically and effectively in the last decade. The gap between environmental regulation in the United States and Mexico is rapidly narrowing, so much so that it is no longer necessarily less burdensome to operate in Mexico from a regulatory perspective. This paper is intended to give a general overview of the system of environmental regulation in Mexico. The actual application of Mexican laws and regulations governing the environment to a specific operation will require a much more detailed review of the applicable environmental standards.

"Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition has been shown to be a highly versatile technique for the synthesis of complex oxides. High dielectric constant oxide thin films of SrTiO3, BaTiO3, Ba1-xSrxTiO3 and SrxBa1-xNb2O6 can be be be deposited at 800 ºC with this technique. The fluorine substituted B-diketonate precursors have been shown to be well-suited for the deposition of high quality, epitaxial thin films of these materials.IntroductionThere has been a resurgence of interest in thin film ferroelectric oxides as a result of the development of techniques to deposit high quality material. Both physical and chemical vapor deposition techniques have been realized. Of the chemical vapor deposition techniques, metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) has received the most interest for the deposition of ferroelectric oxide thin films. This results, in part, from the availability of a number of volatile metal-organic precursors.(l) Moreover, MOCVD offers the advantages of high growth rates, uniform coverage over large areas, conformability, abrupt interfaces and excellent epitaxial crystallinity. Of the metalorganic precursors, the B-diketonate complexes have played an important role especially in the deposition of ferroelectric oxides containing alkaline-earth metals such as BaTi03 and Ba1•XSrxTi03. For example, barium tetramethylheptanedionate Ba(thd)2 has been used in the preparation of BaTi03 by MOCVD.(2) These compounds, however, are not without their problems. Ba(dpm)2 has a relatively low volatility; and as a consequence, temperatures in excess of 180·C are required for volatilization. This leads to the necessity of a complex precursor delivery system to insure that the precursor does not condense before the reaction zone. Moreover, the Ba precursor tends to oligomerize leading to a decrease in vapor pressure as well as a problem with reproducibility. To counter these problems, novel liquid source and solid source precursor delivery systems have been developed. (3)(4)"

The caisson foundation for Vent Building No. 6, at the southern landfall of Boston's Third Harbor Tunnel, was installed inside an unbraced concrete cofferdam 250 feet in diameter and about 70 feet deep. As a spectacular engineering feat, the cofferdam itself certainly ranks first. However, the foundation work within was no routine caisson job and made its own contribution to the state of the art. Comprised of 5 ft. diameter caissons socketed 10 to 16 feet in sound rock, it posed serious challenges in logistics, space limitations and time, requiring development of unique, purpose-made equipment. The unexpected discovery of significant depths of shattered rock overlying acceptable sound rock, along with other surprises of lesser import, compounded the problems. How these challenges were planned for, met and overcome is the subject of this paper.

Land Application Discharge (LAD) is a useful method of disposing of waste water from mining operations and in certain climatic regimes, stormwater runoff. LAD systems function under the premise that metals, salts and nutrients in water are dispersed over a large area and are effectively assimilated into the soil profile. Depending on the soil structure, migration or mobilization of dissolved metals through the soil profile can be Substantially reduced. Land application of treated effluent from sewage lagoons or waste water plants was probably the first general use of land applied water. LAD has gained popularity with the mining industry as a means of disposing of waste water and process water. In addition, large volumes of snow meltwater and stormwater are often placed in storage in Montana during spring, and Land Application Discharge has shown to be an effective method for disposing of stormwater during the dry, summer season. LAD can also provide an alternative to recycling or treating waste water at on-site waste water treatment plant&. Application of stormwater or process water can result in little or no change to the background concentrations of metals in baseline water quality samples. One cautionary note about LAD: high salt concentrations and pH values are associated with process water from heap-leach facilities and are known to cause burning of local vegetation. Some pre-treatment of process water may be necessary to prevent such environmental problems.

Anticipating a major power cost increase in 1990, Cyprus Copper Company decided to modernize the Miami Smelter at a cost of $92.5 million. The modernization project included the addition of an Isasmelt vessel for use as the primary copper smelter and the modification of the existing electric furnace to a slaglmatte separating vessel. The project was completed in June of 1992 and is currently operating at close to its design capacity. This paper provides a summary of the decision making process, a description of the project, a summary of start-up problems and solutions and the current status of the smelter operation.

"Aur Resources Inc. is the operator of the Louvicourt Mine located 40 km east of Val d'Or. Quebec. Les Entreprises Minieres Redpath Limitée a member of the 1.S. Redpath Group of companies was contracted to construct two vertical mine shaft collars in deep overburden.During the spring of1991 two vertical shaft collars were established in wet, running sand that was in excess of20 m deep. This paper will illustrate the engineering and construction techniques used in establishing these collars and the methods used to overcome the various obstacles that occurred during construction.IntroductionThe Louvicourt copper/zinc/gold/silver deposit is located 40 km east of Val d'Or, Quebec, is adjacent to the former Louvern Mine which operated at depths of 40 m to 850 m below surface (Fig. 1). This deposit was discovered in mid-1989 as the result of systematic exploration and diamond drilling based on a geological model. The Louvicourt project is operated by Aur Resources Inc.The property is being developed to produce 4000 tid with an anticipated life of just over 17 years. Mill start up is scheduled for July 1. 1994, commercial production October I, 1994, and full production by late 1995. The current production plan provides for 24 040 (XX) t averaging 3.89% copper, 1.95070 zinc, 0.039 oz gold per tonne and 0.99 oz silver per tonne, to be mined."

World investment 10 all mineral and mining industry sectors is not available. However, partial information available provides some information useful for analysis. Information available in this section covers limited geographic information on investment in the steel industry, limited information for petroleum industry capital spending, and total U.S. foreign investment in comparison to the mineral-related sectors (tables 13, 14, and 15). Annual steel industry investment is available for the European Community, almost all countries within the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Latin America, and other countries with significant mineral industries, such as Canada, Japan, and the United States. Although information was not available for 1992, data for 1991 indicate that for those countries aforementioned, total investment increased by 8 %. However, investment patterns were very different within the different groups of countries. While the European Community had a net increase of 12 %, dominated by an almost °40 % increase in Germany, EFTA member countries had a 26 % decrease in investment for the same period. Investment in EC countries was almost seven times that of EFT A countries. Japan's investment in the iron and steel industry, by far the largest of those available, almost twice that of the EC and almost four times that of the United States, increased by more than 20 %. In North America, investment in Canada and the United States decreased. Almost all of Latin America decreased investment in the sector. The notable exception was Mexico, with a 60 % increase. Changes in Mexico's investment policies of the recent past, its economic growth, and privatization of its iron and steel industry are some of the reasons for such an increase. The other country covered individually in Latin America, where investment in the iron and steel industry increased, although slightly, was Argentina. This limited information does not allow a comprehensive analysis of global industry trend, which in turn impacts many other mineral commodities, and with the transition in many countries within Europe and Central Eurasia that are now effecting the steel industries of the countries that were members of the U.S.S.R. and its CMEA partners, it is most regrettable that comprehensive and comparable data, both current and historic, on investment in this area are not available.
