"Ferrous and non-ferrous metals industries are source of both direct and indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Metal industry accounted for 29.7% of the total GHG emitted from the Indian industry sector in 2007. Aluminum is second largest contributor after steel. Indian Aluminum industry has been growing and is adopting several effective measures for better efficiencies through process change and waste utilization. Improvement in the energy efficiency can form the basis of monitoring reduction in emissions. Under the National Action Plan on Climate Change 2008, National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) aims to upscale the efforts to unlock the market for energy efficiency improvement on a public private partnership (PPP) basis. For a transition to low carbon economy industry is undertaking voluntary measures through scientific and technological innovations both in upstream and downstream sectors. In this paper an attempt is made to overview recent developments in Indian Aluminum industry as well as summarize scientific & technological challenges and prospects.IntroductionAluminum plays a vital role in industrial development. It is a substitute for different type of materials ranging from wood to copper and steel. The aluminum industry has high energy consumption and high contribution to greenhouse gases from carbon dioxide and perfluorocarbons (PFCs) emissions. It is estimated that CO2 equivalent burden of aluminum industry is about 1% of total anthropogenic emissions. The anticipated world growth rate is 3.5% for aluminum demand. Through measures to reduce both direct and indirect CO2 emissions, electricity consumption was reduced from 25 kWh / kg of Aluminum in 1998 to 15 kWh / kg of Aluminum produced in 2008. It is targeted to further reduce it to 10.8 kWh. Aluminum industry is also responsible to about 60% of all PFC emissions. The PFC emissions are harmful to environment, accumulate in surrounding vegetation and contaminate. Efforts to reduce PFC emissions from aluminum industry started early and reduced to 0.5-1 kg / tonne in 1990 [1] from 12-15 kg / tonne in 1940. Since 1990s to 2000 it further reduced to 0.2 -0.4 kg / tonne as seen in Fig. 1. The Global Aluminum Sustainable Development Initiative (GADSI), targets perfluorocarbon (PFC) specific emissions reduction of 80% for 2010 relative to 1990."

Evaluation of incinerated sewage sludge as a secondary resource for aluminum, phosphorus, and minor constituents such as copper and zinc was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines secondary resource program. The elemental composition of sludge ash for 14 plants in 11 U.S. cities was determined. Comparing industrialized cities with cities where most of the sewage is domestic, significant differences in heavy metal content were noted. Various parameters were investigated affecting the extraction of metals and phosphorus from a typical industrial city sludge ash and from a Palo Alto, Calif., sludge ash with a high precious metal content. Three extraction-recovery procedures for metals and phosphorus using sulfuric acid leaching, ion exchange, and various precipitation techniques were investigated. The last procedure developed was a combination approach using a three-stage countercurrent sulfuric acid leach that recovered most of the economic values from the sludge ash and also removed the leachable fraction of elements of environmental concern.

"Lately, the development work in closed circuit grinding has mainly been focused on mills and on different types of instrumentation, mathematical models and automation in spite of the fact that the poor efficiency of the classifier is well known. It has also been proven by several investigations that by improving the sharpness of classifier separation, remarkable technical and economical advantages can be achieved. Some attempts to improve the performance of the most common classifier, hydrocyclone, have been made, among them injection of wash water above the spigot cyclone and retreatment of either or both of the products of the primary classifier. No method has been successful enough to achieve general adoption in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to introduce some industrial results achieved by two-stage classification where the coarse product of the turbulent-flow classifier, hydrocyclone, is cleaned in a laminar-flow cone classifier.The main target of the adoption of the two-stage classification circuit it naturally to improve the sharpness of size separation. This again leads to the following advantages in the grinding process:- lower circulating load and increased capacity- lower energy consumptionnarrower size distribution in the fine product- less overgrinding and less slimes- reduced specific surface areaThese improvements, no doubt, reflect on the subsequent concentrating process in the following aspects:the rate of flotation is improved, less reagents and energy is neededthe recovery and grade of valuable minerals in concentrates is improved- savings in dewatering can be expected- less fines in tailings improve the conditions for water recirculation."

Oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfides is accelerated by the activity of acidophilic iron- and sulfur-oxidising microorganisms. The ideal biocide for controlling biocatalysed acid rock drainage (ARD) would be inexpensive, inhibitory toward sulfide-oxidising bacteria at low concentrations, relatively non-toxic toward non-target organisms, degradable in the environment outside the zone of application, stable and long-lived in the impacted environment, sufficiently mobile to penetrate into piles of waste rock or tailings, and effective regardless of the metal sulfides present. A potent agent for combating ARD that fits these criteria is the thiocyanate anion (SCN-). The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of thiocyanate in controlling or preventing ARD within several types of sulfidic waste rock and tailings. Results were evaluated within a context encompassing process water and solids management strategies employed at different precious and base metal mines. Sulfidic rock was treated with solutions of potassium thiocyanate and subjected to accelerated weathering tests in lab-scale humidity cells, trays, and columns. Certain tests also utilised solid phase copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) to evaluate a ærelease on demandÆ strategy. Leach solutions were analysed for parameters indicative of ARD including pH, redox potential, conductivity, acidity, sulfate, iron, and certain heavy metals. Two larger scale field tests were also initiated by personnel at separate mines using, in the first case, ore containing a pyritic component in large columns and, in the second case, waste rock containing base metal sulfides in lined pits. Humidity cell tests showed low concentrations of thiocyanate solution applied to pyritic waste rock could reduce ARD formation by 90 per cent or more compared to untreated controls, with the residual release of ARD components (eg sulfate, Fe, acidity) probably reflective of strictly chemical oxidation of the sulfides by molecular oxygen. Thiocyanate applied at a concentration of 22 mg/kg to waste rock from a base metal mining operation in large laboratory scale columns reduced acidity and sulfate release by 75 per cent to 80 per cent compared to untreated controls. This extent of reduction in ARD may not meet discharge water quality criteria, but has the potential to significantly reduce lime consumption and sludge production in a conventional neutralisation facility. The use of a solid-phase metal thiocyanate compound (CuSCN) at a dosage of 194 mg/kg pyritic ore resulted in the following per cent reductions in leach solution parameters in comparison to controls: sulfate (78 per cent), acidity (93 per cent), dissolved Fe (99.4 per cent), and dissolved arsenic (99.9 per cent). This compound has the further advantage of being relatively stable until needed, dissolving only in the presence of an acidic and oxidising ARD solution. If this line of investigation progresses favorably, it offers the possibility of an ARD prevention technique that may be applicable in some settings. Mine-site pilot scale tests with pyritic ore resulted in reductions in sulfate (56 per cent) and Fe, As (66 - 68 per cent). In sum, thiocyanate at relatively low concentrations dramatically reduced ARD from sulfidic rock in a simulated heap. The pilot test using waste rock containing base metal sulfides has begun only recently. A preliminary process design and cost estimate was made for fullscale application of thiocyanate to waste rock at a hypothetical gold mining operation producing 5000 tpd of ore and 10 000 tpd of sulfide containing waste rock. The combined capital and operating costs for the full-scale thiocyanate application facility were about $US 0.25/tonne of waste rock and $US 0.50/tonne of ore. Although thiocyanate is readily available commercially, it also occurs in process solutions associated with certain types of mining processes. Such solutions after selective treatment might be recycled to sulfidic waste rock or tailings, rather than being treated for thiocyanate degradation.

Many problems have surfaced in our economy during this decade, and the mining industry has certainly had its share: huge capital outlays for environmental controls, volatile markets, double-digit inflation, inadequate capital markets, political uncertainties-plus shortages of energy, manpower, supplies, and equipment. All these and other problems have left their visible marks on the economy of our industry. Solutions are slow in coming; perhaps, in some instances, there are no right answers. However, it appears that many companies are using joint ventures to an increasing extent in efforts to reach partial solutions to some of these problems. A joint venture does present an economic alternative that should be examined-especially when trying to answer questions arising within the current economic context. The dictionary defines "venture" as an undertaking involving chance, risk, or danger. The word was originally applied to hazardous undertakings involving delivery of cargoes to distant ports and subsequent disposition of the merchandise, but it is now applied to any project of limited scope and temporary duration. When two or more entities join in such a project, it becomes a joint venture, and this is the context in which I have used the term. Joint ventures may be formed for exploration, for development of a new ore body, or for expansion of an existing operation. Each requires different approaches for negotiating and drafting the agreement governing the conduct of the joint venture.

INTRODUCTION A rail rapid transit system called the "Metro" system is presently under construction in the Nation's Capital area. The agency responsible for the design and construction of the Metro system is the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, an independent tristate organization set up under an Act of Congress and financed by federal, state, and local public funds supplemented by revenue bonds. When completed, the Metro system will comprise nearly 100 route miles. About fifteen percent of this mileage is now under construction, while designs for the-remainder are in progress. The system is scheduled for completion in about eight years at a cost of approximately 3 billion dollars. The Metro system will involve nearly all types of construction generally used for rapid rail transit projects. About half of the mileage will be underground, comprising approximately 16 miles of rock tunnels, 10 miles of earth tunnels, and nearly 21 miles of cut-and-cover construction in earth (see Figure 1.). The remaining 51 miles of the system is planned to be constructed on the surface as at-grade or elevated structures. The system includes 86 passenger stations, 53 of which will be underground structures. Twelve of the underground stations will be large size chambers in rock while other underground stations will be constructed in earth as cut-and-cover structures. Thus, about one-fifth of the system will be designed as underground structures, namely tunnels and stations, in rock. Recently, in the United States, questions of possible deleterious synergistic health effects of the gaseous and particulate components in the diesel exhaust and mineral and coal dust have been the impetus for extensive research by several agencies. At the present time, diesel engines are tested and approved for use in gassy and non-gassy underground metal and non-metal mines under Parts 31, 32, and 36 of Title30 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Diesel-powered equipment for use in underground coal mines, though not explicitly addressed in the law, is administered under Parts 32 and 36 of Title 30, with Part 36 being applied in the case of equipment working inby the last open crosscut or in the return airways. Operation of diesel equipment in underground mines has the potential for serious health and safety hazards from the gases, vapors, and particulates in the exhaust. Therefore, various countries have rules and regulations for the safe deployment of diesel equipment. The applicable laws and regulations from several countries who have long experience with diesel-powered equipment in their mines are reviewed. Four major areas have been addressed: (1) testing and approval procedures of diesel engines, (2) ambient mine air quality specifications, (3) frequency of sampling and location of samples, and (4) air quality specifications in splits where diesel-powered equipment are operated. The review indicates that most regulations generally consider four possible hazards: (1) toxic components in the engine exhaust, (2) ignition of flammable atmospheres by the engine or electrical equipment, (3) fire hazards presented by the engine fuel oil and by combustible material that might come in contact with the equipment, and (4) mechanical hazards. There is a remarkable similarity in the laws with regard to engine design, testing and approval procedures. However, the aspects with regard to mine air quality and quantity are quite variable-- from a general statement to very specific standards for many different diesel exhaust constituents. However, the laws with regard to synergistic effects of diesel exhaust components and other mine air contaminants are an exception.

Coal mining in Illinois has resulted in many structures being exposed to subsidence damage. Damage mitigation techniques (DMT) applied in the foundation design/construction have proven successful in minimizing damage in several test cases. To determine the practicality of these techniques, the Costs of their application are investigated. The AMT costs are compared to foundation and total house costs for various classes and sizes of houses. An economical and effective subsidence resistant foundation construction is proposed.

According to the unique properties and many applications of nano silver powder, it was prepared from acid leaching tail solution. The low value residual gold and silver ions were occurred with fellow heavy metals as pollutants (Fe2+, Cu 2+and Zn2+) in acid leaching tail solution in Mouteh gold mine in Iran. Preparation of nano silver particles was achieved in two steps: first, by addition of ammonia as separation step and second by using different reagents as precipitation and extraction steps. Different controlled parameters were including pH, residence time and temperature, mixing time, and reducing reagents to metals molar ratio. Acid leaching process was carried out with sulphuric and nitric acid via suitable reductants. In order to remove copper, zinc, and silver ions from solution, all of the conditions were controlled. The optimum conditions for preparation of nano silver powder with less than 90 nm were pH 10.5, hydrazine/methanol to silver molar ratio of 3 to 4, and reduction time of 5 min in 45 °C. The results were evaluated via SEM, A.A and UV- Vis spectroscopy analytical methods.

Time-domain reflectometry has long been an accepted and used method for locating electrical faults in electrical cables. The process has, however, required the use of equipment that is somewhat complex and difficult to use. The skill level needed to operate such equipment is high. Therefore, the use of the time-domain reflectometry process has been limited to selected locations and controlled environments. The process, however, has great potential for mine system applications. The ability to locate and repair trailing power cable without removing it from the mine would result in great savings in cost and employee-hours. Therefore, an automatic microprocessor-controlled time- domain reflectometry system was developed to reduce process complexity and skill level needed to operate the unit. The theory of operations is discussed along with the computer analogies used in the unit. The present unit capabilities are presented and future areas of application and research are discussed.

Although the pathophysiology of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) is still under discussion, evidence has been accumulated to understand the underlying mechanism. VWF is pathophysiologically characterized by an enhanced vasospastic response to cold, which can result from an imbalance between vasoconstriction and vasodilation in the digital arteries in response to cold (i.e., vasoconstriction-dominant). The imbalance is supposed to be due to faults in vascular vessels and sympathetically mediated vascular tone. Enhanced vasospastic response to cold Narrowing of arterial lumen with medial smooth muscle hypertrophy. Possible functional factors for enhanced vasoconstriction • Increased sympathetic nervous activity to cold (e.g., norepinephrine) • Increased release of endothelin-1 (ET-1; an endothelial-dependent vasoconstrictor) from the endothelium • Increased reactivity of alpha2-adrenoreceptors to cold Possible functional factors for decreased vasodilation • Decreased release of nitric oxide (NO; an endothelial-dependent vasodilator) from the endothelium • Decreased release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP; a vasodilatory neuropeptide) from sensory afferents The question is how their interrelations or imbalances among them are Vibration and arterial damage The next question is, how does hand-arm vibration exposure induce such pathophysiological changes in VWF patients? Recent morphological evidence from animal experiments shows that vibration acceleration stress (including shear stress) and smooth muscle contraction contribute to arterial damage of smooth muscle and endothelial cells. The vibration-induced arterial damage is frequency-amplitude-dependent.

"The chemical treatment of mine-influenced waters is a longstanding environmental challenge for many coal operators, particularly in Central Appalachia. Mining conditions in this region present several unique obstacles to meeting NPDES effluent limits. Outlets are often located in remote areas with challenging terrain where conditions do not facilitate the implementation of large-scale commercial treatment systems. Furthermore, maintenance of these systems is often laborious, expensive, and time consuming. Many large mining complexes discharge water from numerous outlets, while using environmental technicians to assess the water quality and treatment regime multiple times per day. As an alternative solution, this paper describes the ongoing research and development of automated chemical treatment systems for mine water discharges. The current work explains the development of a bench-scale prototype that has been used to evaluate various monitoring, notification, and control strategies. Results from this testing are compared to present day practices to show the costs and benefits of implementing an automated treatment and monitoring program. INTRODUCTION Background The National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), per Section 402 of the Clean Water Act, requires permitting of all point source discharges from coal mines. This program dictates that all water leaving a permitted boundary, whether it be process water or storm water, must leave through a monitored NPDES outlet. These permitted NPDES discharge points, also denoted outlets, outfalls or monitoring points, must meet a rigorous set of effluent limits to maintain compliance. Common effluent limits monitored by coal companies include but are not limited to iron, manganese, aluminum, total suspended solids (TSS), and pH. Raw mine water is often deficient in meeting these effluent limits, and as a result, various treatment processes are required to bring the water into compliance prior to environmental release. Depending on the mining and geologic conditions, water monitoring and treatment programs can constitute a significant operating cost for the mine operator. In Appalachia, acid mine drainage (AMD) constitutes one of the most significant and widespread water quality challenges that must be treated per NPDES guidelines. AMD is a general lowering of water pH that occurs when water and sulfide minerals interact within oxidizing conditions in coal and metal mining. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is a similar term that applies more generally to non-mining causes such as highway construction and other large-scale excavations. Today, mine influenced waters (MIW) is becoming more popular as the general term referring to all types of mining-induced water issues. AMD has been researched substantially over the last 30 years, with investigators studying various causal mechanisms and treatment strategies (e.g. Gazea, 1996; Ziemkiewicz, 1998; Skousen, 2000; Kleinmann, 2001; Johnson, 2003; Akcil, 2006; Kalin, 2006). This research has produced several pragmatic results, which provide numerous methods to predict, prevent, and treat AMD."

Many gold producing states are requiring rinsing of spent heaps to render the leached ore compatible with the environment and are placing reatrictiona on effluent pH, cyanide, and metals concentrations. Parameters which may affect efficient rinsing of heaps have been investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in laboratory column studies. Rinse profiles for cyanide, metals, and pH as a function of the volume of water passed through the spent ore are presented. Fresh water rinsing of spent ore in columns showed that rinsing of cyanide was not affected by the rinse solution application rate. Interrupted rinsing with a rest period between applications reduced the volume of water required to meet effluent cyanide concentrations. Chemical oxidation of the effluent with recycle of the rinse solutions reduced effluent cyanide concentrations and the volume of waste solution generated. Water rinsing was not successful in reducing the alkalinity of the cement agglomerated ore. A dilute acid solution had to be applied after cyanide removal to reduce effluent pH levels to specified limits.

This paper is a review of technological progress in mining geophysics during the past decade. This has been the most significant period in the history of mining geophysics. Among the already existing; techniques, instruments for ground -magnetic and electromagnetic prospecting, were developed that are more, portable and faster to operate. Induced polarization equipment came into widespread use. Airborne instruments of various types became available and were used to survey large areas. Drillhole instruments were developed and have had some use, and it is to be hoped will be used to a greater extent in the future. Two revolutionary new methods, the AFMAG and INPUT, were developed. The wisdom of attempting to cover such a broad field in a single paper might be questioned. There is the inevitable problem that each topic must be discussed very briefly. However, while papers describing individual instruments have appeared, many have yet to be described in the technical literature. The evolution of the ground magnetometer and electromagnetic instruments has not been discussed. It is only recently that a review article has appeared on airborne EM. The existence of review literature on some topics has meant that they are given less emphasis in this review than those topics inadequately covered. It will also be observed that stress is laid on "chose instruments that are generally available to the mining industry rather than those developed by individual exploration companies for their own use.

The isothermal formation of martensite is studied in Fe-Ni-Mn and Fe-Mn-C alloys under conditions where the athermal transformation is completely avoided, there being no martensite present at the beginning of the isothermal reaction. The initial rate of martensite formation is extremely low under these conditions, but it increases greatly as soon as some martensite is formed. It appears that true initial characteristics of the isothermal reaction can be studied only in samples wherein the formation of martensite on cooling is completely eliminated. THE phenomenon of isothermal martensite formation is well established1 -" but the observations have been made in the presence of varying quantities of athermal martensite. Complete avoidance of athermal martensite and the formation of martensite under pure isothermal conditions have been reported by Kurdjumov and Maksimova2 in an Fe-Ni-Mn alloy (23 pct Ni, 3.4 pct Mn, and the balance Fe) and have been confirmed by recent experiments of Cech and Hollomon in a similar alloy. In each case, the isothermal transformation rate was a maximum at the beginning of the transformation and decreased as the reaction proceeded. These initial transformation rates were used by Fisher7 for the confirmation of calculated nucleation rates based on classical nucleation theory extended to include the effect of elastic strain energy. Cech and Hollomon have admitted, however, that up to 3 pct martensite formed on cooling in their samples and thus was present at the initiation of their isothermal runs. In this paper, experiments on similar alloys are described, except that care was taken to remove the incidental martensite developed at the surface prior to the isothermal reaction. It is shown here that the reaction rate at the beginning of the strictly isothermal reaction is very low. As soon as some detectable amount of martensite is produced, the transformation rate increases rapidly but ultimately decreases as the reaction proceeds. When martensite is allowed to form isothermally in the presence of about 2 pct of prior martensite, the apparent initial reaction rate is a maximum and corresponds to the observations of Kurdjumov and Maksimova and Cech and Hollomon. It is evident that the cooperative nature of the martensitic reaction results in a significant stimulating or autocatalytic effect on the isothermal reaction rate. Experimental Procedure The chemical compositions of the alloys used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The Fe-Ni-Mn alloys A and B were melted in an induction furnace, cast into ingots 2 in. diam by 4 in. long, and forged into % in. diam rods. The manganese steel (alloy C) was melted in an arc furnace and cast into ceramic molds 1/4 in. diam by 5 in. long. The rods were sealed in evacuated Vycor tubes and homogenized at 1175" to 1200°C for 50 hr. The long homogenization resulted in some manganese loss from the surface, producing a thin layer of transformed material. This surface layer was removed by grinding and the specimens were then swaged to 0.050 in. diam wire. Measurements of electrical resistance were made with a Kelvin double bridge to follow the course of the martensitic transformation. A small permanent magnet was also useful in scanning an entire specimen for small localized quantities of martensite. This test is almost as sensitive as the electrical resistance method in detecting the presence of martensite (which is ferromagnetic in these alloys) and it was especially useful in deciding whether a specimen was completely free of martensite. The wire specimens (0.050 in. diam by 2.5 in. long) were sealed in evacuated tubes and austenitized for 5 min at 1150°C. The specimens were quenched into water and, unless otherwise stated, stress-relieved for 1 hr at 650 °C in order to induce greater uniformity in the subsequent martensitic transformation. As dem-

"INTRODUCTIONPlatelet-activating factor (P AF) has been shown to mediate a broad range of biologic activities (1). Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group, an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon of the glycerol backbone, and an ether linkage at the first carbon. The alkyl group attached to the first carbon can exist in a variety of chain lengths, with the C16 and C18 forms predominant in humans. The structure of P AF has been identified as 1-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphorylcholine (2,3).PAF can be released from a variety of cell types, such as basophils, neutrophils, and alveolar macrophages ( 4-6). Stimuli for the release of P AF include calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and zymosan. In addition, endotoxin has been shown to be a potent stimulant of P AF release from alveolar macrophages (7).P AF has been shown to have a number of pulmonary effects. It has been associated with asthma since it can cause contraction of pulmonary tissue (8) and leukotriene secretion from leukocytes (9) and induce airway constriction when inhaled by humans (10). In addition, PAF is a potent chemoattractant and can cause migration ofneutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (11,12). Endotoxin is a lipopolysaccharide-protein complex derived from the cell walls of gram-negative bacteria. I.PS is the lipopolysaccharide portion of endotoxin. LPS contains four covalently joined subunits: lipid A, 3-deoxyoctonate, a core polysaccharide moiety, and an 0-specific antigenic polysaccharide side chain. Rough LPS contains no 0-antigen side chain. The liP.id A portion of LPS has been associated with most of the biolQgic effects of endotoxin (13). This lipid A subunit consists of a D-glucosamine disaccharide backbone substituted with four fatty acid side chains. Endotoxin is found in a wide variety of occupational settings associated with organic dusts derived from plants or animals, such as cotton, cereal grains, silage, rice, and poultry (14-18). In addition, airborne endotoxin has been found in sewage treatment plants, composting plants, offices with contaminated humidifiers, and showers or saunas (19-22)."

THE producers of this liquid metal call it quicksilver, while the consumer generally refers to it as mercury. It is one of he seven metals that were known to the ancients. These seven were gold, silver, iron, copper, quicksilver, lead, and tin. Other metals were sometimes accidentally alloyed with some of these, but it was not until 1490 that antimony, for example, was discovered and identified as a separate metal. It is not surprising that quicksilver should have been known in ancient or even in prehistoric times, as globules of the native metal often occur in the outcrops of the ore. Furthermore, the first man to build a fire on an outcropping of quicksilver ore would probably have found globules of quicksilver in the cold ashes of his fire after it burned out. The inability to pick up the globules with the fingers would excite interest and an attempt to gather it in shells or gourds to be exhibited and traded. The ore of quicksilver is the red sulfide, cinnabar, which has been mined and used as the pigment vermilion since before the beginning of written history. In recorded history, quicksilver is first mentioned in documents by Aristotle, 384-322 B.C. Theophrastus, in 315 B.C., credited the Athenian, Callias, with the invention of methods to beneficiate cinnabar in 415 B.C. In China also there are records antedating Christ which mention both vermilion paint and the fluid metal. From these early records, it seems certain that not only was cinnabar used as a pigment in those days but also that the metal was reduced from the ore and was used for amalgamation, for gilding, and for medicinal purposes. When driving mine roadways in the vicinity of tectonic disturbances and fault zones, sudden outbursts of gas, along with ejections of fine coal, occur. Substantial dynamic changes occur around the roadways in the coal and around the support. The problem has several aspects. Studies have been carried out on the technical analyses of the phenomena which occurred in the Velenje Lignite Mine from 1957 to 1988. The second part of the investigation involves systematic laboratory studies of strength and deformability characteristics of lignite samples and "in-situ" measurements of stress changes during the driving of some roadways. Analyses of events (using the model of limit convergence and the finite element method) showed the possibility of gas outbursts, taking into account the deformability conditions when crossing over from compact lignite to the disturbed region. The rate of advance of roadways and the method of support strongly influence the occurrence of the phenomenon. The preventative measures used in driving roadways under such conditions include trial drilling and the use of blasting instead of machine cutting.
