Surface mine operators often gamble that the savings gained from elimination of haul-road subbase preparation will offset any potential loss in production due to deteriorating roads. According to the authors of a manual on haul-road construction, this practice yields results that are almost always undesirable. The lack of suitable weight-bearing material under the road surface permits extensive rutting, sinkage, and overall deterioration of the roadway, and a great deal of maintenance work will be needed to keep the road usable. In addition, say Walter W. Kaufman of Skelly and Loy, and James C. Ault, USBM Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center, adverse road conditions pose a serious threat to vehicular controllability and create unsafe haulage road segments.

Princess colliery, the largest mine operated by the Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, commenced operations in 1877. It was the first mine sunk in the Sydney coal field with the primary object of working submarine coal. Until 1925, coal was won by the room-and-pillar system. By that year, the depth of cover over the workings was 1,300 feet, and physical conditions had become such that it was impossible to extract completely the pillars formed by the working of the rooms. Because of this, the system of work was changed to longwall in the early part of that year. At first, an orthodox hand-pick method was used, with gate roads laid off at 50-foot centres and the mine cars loaded by hand directly on the longwall faces. Later in the year, the first machine-cut conveyor longwall faces were started.

A study was made of the growth kinetics of B-brass layers in a-brass us y-brass diffusion couples in which both phases were saturated in the 6 phase. It was found that useful estimates can be made of the difhsion coefficients at the ß-phase interfaces from interface displacement data, which are relatively easy to measure experimentally; also, a useful estimate can be made of the mean heat of activation for diffusion from layer growth data. The effects of pressure on layer growth kinetics were explored and found to be consistent with a vacancy model for diffusion in 6 brass in both the disordered and ordered temperature range. 1 HE study of multiphase diffusion receives relatively little attention in comparison with that devoted to diffusion in homogeneous materials. Of the hundred or so papers on diffusion written each year,' only a few are devoted to the subject, and it is the rare review article2,3 that devotes any space to multiphase diffusional phenomena. This is unfortunate, since the metallurgist frequently encounters practical situations involving cementation processes such as cladding, protective coating of metals, and so forth in which he needs guidance of a fundamental nature. The investigation of multiphase diffusion phenomena is complicated by the fact that one must consider reactions at phase interfaces as well as the migration of atoms within the individual phases; these reactions cause the interfaces to be displaced within the diffusion zone. The relative displacement of two adjacent interfaces corresponds to the growth of an intermetallic layer, and it is not difficult to determine experimentally the kinetics of layer growth. In the past few years it has been pointed out4,5 that valuable fundamental information may be gained about diffusion coefficients and the concentrations at interfaces through a study of their motion. Accordingly, it is the purpose of this paper to report the results of an investigation of interface motion in a simple multiphase binary system. In the work reported herein, attention was focussed on the growth of a 6 -brass layer in a diffusion couple prepared from a- and y-brass compositions saturated with respect to the 6 phase. This particular system was chosen for a number of reasons. First, the bcc ß-brass phase is disordered for all compositions at temperatures above 468°C and becomes increasingly long-range ordered for all compositions at temperatures below 454° C;6,7 thus, the effects of a variation in order on interface displacement could be determined. Second, diffusion coefficients have already been obtained as a function of temperature in the ß phase both in the ordered and disordered Re- and a theoretical picture of the mechanism of diffusion in this and other ordered solutions is emerging.11'12 Third, some thermodynamic data are available for the a-, ß-, and ?-brass phases,13,4 and these data could be used to gain insight into questions of phase equilibria and concentrations at phase interfaces.

Reservoir and producing characteristics can govern the decision to use either a one-, two- or three-dimensional model for making predictions for gravity-drainage reservoirs. Examples of conditions requiring one-, two- and three-dimensional calculations are given. In 1961 the author presented a method for predicting one-dimensional gravity-drainage performance. This work has been exrendcd to obtain a three-dimensional model, which is described and for which a sample problem is presented. Introduction Many papers on gravity drainage or gas-cap drive'-3 have been presented for conditions where the reservoir is treated as a single areal segment so that, in effect, only one-dimen-sional flow is considered. Other authors'-Q ave given evidence showing that the one-dimensional concept would be unsatisfactory to predict reservoir performance for certain types of reservoirs. Experience has indicated that specific reservoir and producing conditions govern whether one-, two- or three-dimensional concepts must be used as a basis for reliable reservoir performance predictioils. Previously the author presented a paper outlining a method for predicting the performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs.' That paper treated the reservoir as a single areal segment so that it was applicable for only one-dimensional flow. The work has been extended to obtain a three-dimensional model that can be used to predict performance of gravity-drainage reservoirs. Although capable of being three-dimensional, it can be used equally well for one- and two-dimensional predictions. This paper discusses those reservoir and producing conditions governing the choice of model, and also describes a three-dimensional model suitable for predicting reservoir performance in the more complex situations. Discussion The Choice of Model To predict reservoir performance, it is necessary to represent the reservoir by a physical model. A mathematical model, based on the assumed physical model, then is used to predict the movement of oil and gas within the reservoir. The word "model" is used here to connote the combination of both a physical model and a mathematical model based on the physical model. Certain types of reservoir situations may be predicted suitably with a one-dimensional model, whereas two- and three-dimensional models may be required for other situations. This section illustrates reservoir conditions associated with the use of a specific type of model. Many types of reservoir structures are such that gravity drainage possibly could be an important factor in oil production. Production practices, as well as the nature of the structure. can influence the type of model that should be used. obviously, it is impossible to discuss all combinations of reservoir structure and production practices that might be encountered in gravity-drainage reservoirs. The following are typical examples of conditions where a choice must be made among a one-, two- or three-dimensional model to predict reservoir performance satisfactorily. Conditions Requiring a One-Dimensional Model Fig. la shows contours for an asymmetrical anticline in which gravity drainage might be expected to be important. Fig. Ib depicts a cross-section along Line A-A in Fig. la. Existence of a gas cap is a good clue that gravity drainage will be an important factor in producing oil from this type of reservoir. However, it is not essential since a gas cap will form as oil is produced from the reservoir. The development of highly selective mineral processing reagents, which are not merely metal-ion specific, but specific to the particular mineral surface structure, is essential for the exploitation of relatively more difficult-to-process ore deposits, in particular for the separation amongst minerals having the same constituent ion. Both the choice of the functional group as well as the molecular architecture of the reagent determine its selectivity. Several examples are presented in this paper to illustrate the concepts of structure specificity and molecular recognition at mineral surfaces - the concepts crucial to the advancement of the emerging science of reagents design. Recent advances made in the understanding of molecular interactions involved in the synthesis of biomineralized materials are discussed so as to delineate the utility of this approach in the design of selective reagents for mineral separation.

In non-ferrous metal furnaces the installed magnesia-chromite refractory lining is exposed to several stresses, rather complex in their interaction. Therefore, a detailed investigation and understanding of wear mechanisms through “post mortem studies” is an important prerequisite for refractory producer. Additionally, in order to determine the most suitable refractory products and to improve the lining life of refractories, practical corrosion testing with processing slags is performed. For this purpose the test-facilities, such as induction furnace, rotary kiln but also cup test and drip slag test, allow the best possible understanding of chemothermal brick wear on pilot scale. Prior to testing a complete mineralogical investigation, thermo-chemical calculation via FactSageTM of the slag was carried out. Based on such research results, combined with specific process knowledge RHI Magnesita can recommend appropriate brick lining solutions for non-ferrous metal furnaces.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration characteristics of high-clay sylvinite ores from potash companies operating in the Permian basin near Carlsbad, N. Mex. These ores, containing 14 to 19 percent K20 and 3 to 5 percent clay slimes, cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods because of their high clay content. A solution to this problem was shown to be the use of two-stage moderate scrubbing conditions for clay disaggregation and removal as opposed to strenuous attritioning. Bench-scale beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation from the scrubbed material resulted in acceptable product grades and recoveries. By using a coarse grind, emphasis was placed on production of premium granular and coarse products. Flotation results showed that concentrates of 59.6 to 60.4 percent K.0 values can be obtained. Continuous pilot plant beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation resulted in concentrates containing 58.8 to 59.8 percent K20 with recoveries of 69.7 to 81.4 percent of the K20.

One mine manager states these were direct spin offs from the work being done to qualify for a safety award in the program known as the ""IMSRS 11 over a three-year period of time. ""Of Course"", stated this manager, ""these were in addition to an 87% reduction in our disabling injusry frequency rate.”Officially known as the International Mine Safety Rating System or the Five Star Mine Safety Rating, a new approach to mine safety is being used with enthusiasm by a significant number of mines in Canada, the U.S., Australia, Chile, Indonesia, the Philippines and South Africa. Significant results are coming into the International Loos Control Institute from over 125 mines from these countries.The program is built around a mine safety audit system that gives positive recognition to a mine at 5-step intervals along the way, (a star with each step attained). The Institute has licensed auditors in locations in Canada and the U.S. available to audit.It is believed the success of this program is the result of the premise upon which the program is based. The results being achieved are due to the concept that a modern, well-managed mine safety program maintains the basic foundation of a complete management system. When properly implemented, it reinforces those factors common to production, quality and safety. (Attitude - skill - knowledge - fitness - structure - machine - equipment - materials and processes). The IMSRS contains elements that reinforce all these factors. It uniquely treats safety as part of the ""right way"" to do the job and not just the ""safe way"" as a distinctly separate entity. Mines using this program now recognize that many of the older safety techniques were not necessarily the right way or the most efficient way to do things. It appears that this new approach to mine safety is a new avenue for the attainment of management's real goals for being in business, and at the same time achieves optimum support for the important target of safety and health for the mine worker."

Gypsum (CaSO4-2H2O) is an abundant and naturally occurring mineral. Under elevated temperatures (250 to 300°F) gypsum loses its crystalline water and is converted to hemihydrate (CaSO4 -0.5H2O). The hemihydrate form is also called plaster that is widely used in wall- board, joint compound, and many other industrial applications. At temperatures higher than 450°F (up to 1,200°F), gypsum loses all crystalline water and is converted to anhydrite form (CaSO4). The loss of crystalline water at elevated temperatures is an endothermic reaction. This property makes gypsum an attractive filler and fire retardant in certain thermosetting plastics. The applications of gypsum in plastics, food, pharmaceutical, and paper coatings will be reviewed in this paper. The future of synthetic gypsum, a by product of various industrial processes, will also be discussed.

"The leaching of sulphide minerals generates a significant amount of energy. There are three systems that might be used to remove this energy. These are: cooling coils, quench water, and flash recycle. Flash recycle is the recycling of slurry from the autoclave to the feed tank. Heat is removed in this arrangement when the slurry at elevated temperature and pressure is flashed to atmosphere, releasing steam. The slurry is returned to the autoclave at lower temperature, resulting in cooling. The cooling is directly proportional to the steam released from the recycled slurry. Design equations and results for the flash recycle system are presented. A fourth proposal for removing heat is to recycle slurry from the back of the autoclave. These four alternatives not only remove the heat, but also have an effect on the leaching efficiency. Amongst the four alternatives, design calculations indicate that the flash recycle option is the optimal solution in terms of leaching efficiency and heat removal, and recycling product from the back of the autoclave is the worst. In spite of its efficiency in terms of heat removal and leaching, the implementation of the flash recycle system is limited to a few operations in the platinum industry.INTRODUCTIONIn considering ways to improve leaching operations, focus is placed on the chemistry, on the kinetics, the agitation and perhaps even on the gas mass transfer conditions. It was decided to hold the exposition in Chicago, this year, for two reasons: The U. S. Army commandeered the Grand Central Palace Exposition Building in New York, immediately on the close of the last exposition and converted it into a receiving hospital, the use for which is now, happily, nearly ceased; and it was thought that the Exposition would succeed in bringing about a greater development of chemical industries in the Chicago district and the adjoining states. The new euphoria in diamond exploration brings with it a need to understand the challenges that new projects can face in different stages of the development and risks that the commercial outcomes from the new projects fall short of expectations. In many cases, the problems are related to a poor understanding of the technical risks and a failure to adequately address them during the course of investigation. Failure to evaluate all disciplines to the same level of certainty could lead to a situation where the important issues are only identified late in the project development, resulting in costly delays and financial difficulties. The diamond projects located in Canadian Arctic, with its challenging environmental, geographical, social, political and geological contexts are especially sensitive to the high variability of the outcome. This presentation highlights some of the technical aspects that could be the leading sources of risk in diamond projects and could ultimately result in inappropriate mine designs, reducing the economic outcome.

Human operators, geological conditions, equipment changes, mining sequences, and roof conditions are some of the continually changing operating conditions that drive a dynamic mining environment. These dynamic characteristics make it difficult to automatically analyze mining data because attributes change as the mining environment changes. Mine monitoring systems could provide mine managers with much more useful information than they do presently, if automatic analysis were possible. Automatic analysis of sensor data is also key to autonomous mining systems. This paper describes artificial intelligence (AI) and sensor fusion based sensor data analysis techniques developed over the past four years. These techniques were used to classify machine operating events by continuously monitoring machine power usage in a continuous miner section at an under- ground coal mine. The result is a report similar to an industrial engineering time study. First, numerical pattern classification techniques broadly identify operating events. However, domain knowledge about inter-machine and intra-machine interactions is necessary to identify and refine dynamic event boundaries. By implementing AI and sensor fusion based techniques we are able to classify machine events more accurately and recognize more specific events. These techniques could easily be applied to many different mining sensor data applications

The laminated model, in conjunction with the seam element method, is expected to be a powerful predictor of subsidence due to coal mining. The fundamental solutions for the model are presented. Numerical approach to determine the roof-to-floor convergence and evaluation of ground movement are discussed. Numerical results and comparisons with field observations are given to illustrate the validity and the potential of the model.

A longwall coal mine in Appalachia about 1,500 ft deep encountered a fault while developing a new longwall panel. The fault extended from mining depth to the surface near a secondary road and drainage. The fault was located inside the anticipated angle of draw within the mined panel and gob. The fault extended vertically out and up, away from the panel, caved zone, and gob at nearly the angle of draw: the fault very nearly following the angle of draw. It was initially thought that "fault reactivation" could possibly occur. Fault reactivation is the phenomenon of having mining subsidence localized along a fault leading to a "reactivation" of the fault and shearing and displacement along the fault. Such fault reactivation would disrupt and deform the fault plane beyond the normal angle of influence of the subsidence trough, and may provide a conduit for any ground and surface waters to reach the mine. We contacted all operators of longwall mines in Appalachia to determine if any Appalachian longwall mines had ever experienced fault reactivation, and teamed that none had experienced the phenomenon. After studies of possible water intrusion quantities and rates based upon in-fault pump tests, which indicated that water intrusion rates should be manageable, and the prior experience that faults in this particular area were usually barriers to water flow, mining proceeded with caution and monitoring. Mining was successful with no noticeable increase in water inflow rates, and no measurable off-setting of the fault exposure on the surface. It can be concluded that the fault did not reactivate due to its relationship to the mining sequence.

"Jute fibers have in the past decades being investigated as possible reinforcement of polymer composites. However, information is still needed on the fiber interaction with a polymeric matrix for a complete evaluation of the capacity of load transference inside the composite. The present work investigated the interaction of jute fibers with polyester matrix by means of the critical length assessment through pullout tests. Tensile tests of polyester sockets embedded with different fiber lengths allowed the critical length to be determined and then the interface shear stress to be calculated. A relatively low interfacial strength was found, which indicates a weak adhesion between the ramie fiber and the polyester matrix. The SEM analysis of pulled out fibers corroborates this result.Introduction Natural fiber, mainly those lignocellulosic extracted from plants, have, in the past few decades, attracted the attention not only of scientists but also of industrial technologists of our society interested in their engineering applications. As it is well known, uses of natural fiber in clothes carpets, baskets, ropes and low cost construction roofing has existed from the beginning of our civilization. Today environmental and energy saving issues are motivating research works on new uses of lignocellulosic fibers in polymer composites [1-6]. Moreover, industrial application of lignocellulosic fiber composites are already in technological sectors such the automobile industry, packing and civil construction [7-9].In addition to environmental, economical and social benefits, some lignocellulosic fibers present specific properties that are comparable to those of other synthetic fiber used for polymer composite reinforcement. For instance, the specific strength (GPa.cm3/g) of curaua (1.31), sisal (0.92) and ramie (0.93) fibers, from results obtained with very thin diameters [10] are relatively closer to that of glass fiber E (1.33). Therefore, in principle, it would be technically justified to replace glass fiber, which is more expensive, toxic and represents a problem to the environment [ll], by a strong lignocellulosic fiber. However, serious drawbacks such non-uniform dimensions and heterogeneous properties [6] as well as the tendency to form aggregates during processing and incompatibility with a hydrophobic polymer matrix, reduce the potential of lignocellulosic fiber to be used as composite reinforcement [1-6]. In particular, a low interfacial strength causes a weak adhesion between the hydrophilic fiber and the polymer matrix."

The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a new 2500 STPD gold operation. The control system of the mine and milling operations are a hybrid of DCS (Distributed Control System) control and PLC (Programming Logic Controller) control. A DeltaV DCS system serves as the main control and operation platform while the PLCs operate a multitude of vendor specific packages. The communication backbone of the DCS system is a hybrid of star and ring fiber optic topology, which provides reliability and flexibility. The communication between the DCS and PLCs is typically facilitated by serial communication. This communication insures the integrity of the whole control system.

Mining is a risky business. The cost of exploring for new mineral deposits is high and the success rate of finding one worthy of development is relatively low. And once a deposit is identified, there is no guarantee that it will become a mine. Mining companies have to spend a lot of time and money on due diligence, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and sustainable development and environmental issues before deciding whether the deposit will become a profitable mine. And then there are the millions of dollars spent in developing the deposit and building a mine. No wonder the mining industry has trouble attracting investment capital. Companies take a large risk in developing reserves and investors take a similar risk in investing in them. So mining companies must be as accurate as possible in determining mineralization that makes it to reserve status. After all, reserves are a company’s most important asset and one of the critical factors analysts and funding sources look at when determining if a mine or mining company is worth the risk.
