DURING the last decade many conditions have been encountered that have materially increased the cost of the production of coal. As in most cases it has not been practicable to increase the selling price of such coal sufficiently to insure the necessary margin of profit, the mine management has been forced to avail itself of what might be termed unusual means that costs might be held at as low a figure as possible. The so-called efficiency engineer has been called upon, costly power plants have been built and machinery has been installed to replace manual labor wherever possible. Another aid used recently to secure economies through the more intelligent production of coal, is the chemist. As the coal industry, barring the production of byproduct coke, does not at once give evidence of its need of the services of the chemist, the writer will endeavor to point out a few of the services that this branch of the staff has been able to render. The preparation of coal in the past has been carried on entirely upon an empirical basis, that is, the criterion adopted has been an ocular inspection. Unfortunately, the appearance of a coal and especially of an anthracite, has but little relation to its fuel value, and as long as coal is purchased for the heat that 'can be obtained from it by its combustion, the quantity of such heat that is purchased must be one of the principal desiderata in selecting or preparing a coal. Were coals purchased for use as bric-a-brac or for exhibition in museums it might be both wise and just to purchase them upon their appearance. After 4 or 5 years of investigation the fact has been established that coals of very inferior appearance, and I now have special reference to anthracite, might and often did possess heating and burning properties superior to those possessed by, bright coals which in the past had commanded considerable and uniform premiums in the market. This being the case the question arose as to whether the trade could be convinced of this fact. The presence of radioactivity in uranium mill wastes has resulted in somewhat unique waste disposal methods. In addition to the common problems of disposing of large quantities of solid wastes, neutralizing acids, minimizing dissolved heavy metals, and clarifying all liquid effluents, the uranium mill operator must sample and analyze liquid effluents for micro-micro quantities of radionuclides such as, radium-226, thorium-230 and lead-210. Special disposal methods or decontamination procedures are required to meet the stringent limitations established by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission on the concentration of radionuclides in liquid effluents. Routine monitoring of the receiving stream is also normally required. In recent years there has been a growing concern about the radioactivity remaining in the uranium mill tailings, particularly at the sites of shut-down or dismantled mills. The State of Colorado, in cooperation with the industry, has adopted regulations for stabilization of inactive uranium mill tailings. The Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide operates mills for the recovery of uranium and vanadium at Uravan and Rifle in Colorado and a mill in the Gas Hills of Wyoming for uranium production. The company also owns former mill sites on which mill tailings are located at Maybell, Rifle, and Slick Rock in Colorado and at Green River, Utah. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methods used by a few uranium mills, largely those operated by Union Carbide Corporation, to dispose of radioactive wastes, to discuss briefly the regulations under which the mills operate, and to present reference information on the subject.

With the pressure on mine and metallurgical managers to take accountability for responsible corporate governance in their operational area, it is no longer acceptable to rely on central departments in the organization to manage safety, health and environmental impacts of the company?s processes. Environmental impacts exist because of the production or mining process. Some of the inputs to the process are natural resources and some of the outputs of the process are the inputs to the environmental control equipment, plant and the environment itself. Environmental management therefore needs to be incorporated in production management to effectively control and reduce the impacts. Many aspects of environmental management are identical to production management and the systems to manage them will likewise be very similar. By examining key components of these two management systems a decision can be made whether environmental management and production management are structurally similar and can be integrated into a combined IT solution.

"Mine management now recognizes the value of computer-based truck-shovel dispatching in open pit mines. The key tangible benefits are substantial productivity increases with a given fleet of equipment or, alternately, significant reductions in equipment required to meet production quotas. In this paper, the authors review the literature, report on efficient, optimal algorithms for haul truck dispatching in real-time, and briefly discuss methods used by various mines to evaluate productivity improvements over manual methods. Actual results obtained at thirteen mining operations around the world are also presented.IntroductionModular Mining Systems manufactures, installs, and supports its computer-based DISPATCH system at mines worldwide. DISPATCH is a large scale, computer-based mine management system which controls the dispatching of all haul trucks in any open pit mine (Fig. 1). When increased production is important, DISPATCH gets the needed production increase with fewer new or recommissioned trucks. In seeking to improve the economic performance of mines, the management or human aspects are usually seen to be quite seperate from, and more significant than, the technical aspects. There are obvious aspects of industrial relations, man-management, skills training and supervision that are currently the focus of efforts to improve the productivity and quality of the mining process. However technology also has a lot to offer. Analysis of the costs involved suggests that innovations leading to improvement in the productivity of the excavation and transport of overburden and the recovery of coal (both in the mine and preperation plant) can lead to improvements in the economic performance of a mine that may outstrip the obvious non-technical or management opportunities for improvement. While there are some innovations currently being investigated within the industry that relate to the design of mining equipment, the type of machinery being used in open cut mines has not changed dramatically over the last twenty five years. It is also likely that mining equipment will remain essentially of the same form in the forseeable future. If significant improvements to mining performance are to be achieved other than by futher increases in the scale of machinery, then we need to seek ways to operate these same types of machines in a more productive and controlled manner. This paper discusses the identification of mining processes the improvement of which is likely to have a significant effect on mining costs and performance. Some areas of current research are discussed and potentially fruitful areas for future development are identified.

SPURRED by demands of a buoyant economy for mineral products, output from mines in the United States established a new record. Removal of waste material, necessary for the extraction of economic minerals, kept pace with mine production. Earth moving by these two activities exceeded 3 billion tons, an increase of 5 percent over that of 1963. Crude materials from which metal or nonmetal products were derived accounted for 75 percent of the total. The remainder, mostly worthless, was classified as waste. Changes in the minerals industry result from many causes. Technological trends and labor productivity are among several significant and interrelated indexes that assist in the analysis of the changes. Therefore, a. study of productivity is helpful in measuring technological growth in mining. Concepts of productivity tend to vary with the purpose for which the term is used; frequently, productivity is expressed in terms of units of output per unit of labor, such as tons of ore per man-hour or man-shift. Comparisons of levels of productivity for a group of products are usually made using composites of output. Data for all metal and nonmetal mines except gold, silver, mercury, platinum metals group, and sand and grave were used to compile the composite for determining productivity for 1960-64. Copper ore, iron ore, and phosphate rock are mined mainly by surface methods, but characteristics of the deposits and differences in processing the crude material affect production of the commodities. Therefore, productivity data for these selected segments of the minerals industry reflect the influence of physical conditions on the exploitation of them.

The aim of this work was the preparation of nickel-steels from elemental metal powders by powder metallurgy techniques. It was known that plain carbon steels could be made from a mixtufe of iron powder and graphite and that the effect of carbon on iron in powder form was of the same nature as that produced in fusion metallurgy. The problem in making nickel steels from elemental powders consisted therefore in finding out whether sufficient diffusion of the nickel and other incidental metals . normally present in such steels could be induced in the solid state to modify the properties of plain carbon steels made from powders and produce the beneficial effect of alloying. The composition selected originally was that of an S.A.E. 2330 steel. Metal powders, in the proportion correspending to that composition, were mixed with graphite, pressed, and heated at different temperatures for different periods of time, to produce bonding of the metal particles and mutual diffusion of the various elements without melting. Temperatures up to 1325°C and sintering periods as long as 6 hr were first investigated because it was expected.that such conditions would produce maximum diffusion with an accompanying improvement in the properties of the alloy. It was found that, although diffusion proceeded to a large extent under the conditions investigated, it would not be complete unless sintering were carried out at a high temperature for much longer than 6 hr. Relatively high temperatures and long sintering times are objectionable from a practical point of view, particularly when a low COSt material is to be produced, because they necessitate the use of special, costly equipment. Work could be done to improve the diffusion of iron and nickel by changing conditions other than the sintering temperature and time, that is, finer primary or alloy powders could be used. However, a marked change in the properties of the steel had been observed even with only partial diffusion. It was thought, therefore, that instead of trying to improve the diffusion, advantage might be taken of its incompleteness to produce a special structure consisting, in the unquenched condition, of a hard constituent, rich in nickel, dispersed in a tough pearlitic matrix. Steels with such a structure, not readily obtainable by fusion, should have desirable mechanical properties. Besides, it should be possible to prepare them from elemelltal powders under economical conditions. This latter alternative was therefore adopted for the second phase of this work. This report is divided into four parts: I. General Procedure. 2. Effect of Sintering Temperature. 3. Effect of Varying the Nickel Content. 4. Effect of Alloying Elements. General Procedure The general technique of cold pressing as used in powder metallurgy was applied.

Sheets of the magnesium alloys AZ31B, HK31A, and ZE10A in several different tempers were tested in tension and determinations were made of the ratio of width-to-thickness strain. A marked increase in the ratio with tensile straining and a dependence upon alloy and test direction are rationalized in terms of a balance between the amounts of basal and prism-plane slip. All such variations are related, in turn, to the prevailing crystallographic texture. Fracture appearance is explained on the basis of anisotropy in plastic flow, and implications for developing texture -hardening effects in these alloys are discussed. ThE crystallographic texture or preferred orientation of a given material is determined by details of processing history. Such texture is known to influence many aspects of material behavior, in particular both the yielding and strain-hardening characteristics which are of special interest in the present work. Traditionally, the resulting plastic anisotropy has not been regarded as especially desirable. Earing in drawn sheet is perhaps the most common example of an unwanted effect of texture. However, it has also been recognized that suitable textures may be usefully employed to improve drawability,1,2 as a specific example, and generally to control yielding resistance under combined-stress loading.374 Texture would seem to be a detail of structure not yet exploited to nearly the fullest extent. A convenient basis for characterizing anisotropy in plastic behavior is the ratio of width-to-thickness strains obtained in a tension test;5&apos;6 the parameter is frequently labeled "R" and its value is revealing with respect to the nature of the prevailing texture. R gives a useful measure of a material&apos;s "thinning resistance". For an isotropic material, R = 1. With R > 1 the increased through-thickness strength in a sheet means greater resistance to yielding under biaxial tension, or "texture hardening";3&apos;4 if R < 1 the result may be a "texture softening" under the same loading conditions.4 Most R data relate to steel sheets for deep-drawing applications. Values for steel and other materials of cubic structures are not often much greater than 1 and nearly constant with strain in testing.1,2,7,8 To explore the implications of plastic anisotropy further, it was felt that experiments with much more strongly textured materials would be useful, and this led to the choice of magnesium alloys. The "ideal" sheet texture for magnesium contains the (0001) plane in the rolling plane, which ought to lead to R values approaching infinity. However, departures from the ideal texture, the possibility of slip in non-close-packed directions, and deformation by twinning would all be expected to introduce some range of R. Accordingly, studies on these materials were undertaken. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys in sheet form, Table I, were selected to obtain a variation in crystallographic texture, in the expectation that this would be reflected in differences in plastic anisotropy. Pole figures constructed by the Schulz surface-reflection technique9 were provided with the experimental materials by the Dow Metal Products Co. Profiles of pole density along great circles through the rolling (0 deg) and transverse (90 deg) directions were prepared from the pole figures and are collected in Figs. 1 and 2; considerable departure from the "ideal" (0001) alignment in the rolling plane is evident, with the largest angular spread in both directions being found in the ZEl0 alloy. Results of tensile tests on full-thickness specimens of 6-in. gage length by 1/2-in. width are given in Fig. 3 as engineering stress-strain curves* in rolling and transverse directions. All tests but one were made at a constant drive rate of 0.02 in. per min, and the final values of percent elongation at fracture, over the initial 6-in. gage length, are noted at the ends of the curves; one test on ZE10A-

This study was carried out in a bid to survey Ganboke gold mine in Pala, Mayo-Kebbi Province, southwestern Chad. The Ganboke mine is now being prepared for investigation and development, and the research sought to perform rock properties tests of relevant rocks through its geological survey, rock mass evaluation, and in-situ and laboratory tests and analyze the stability by the means of limit equilibrium method, thereby suggest appropriate methods to design the pit slope and individual benches in Ganboke mine. Targenting GS1-GS1&apos; section with the depth of 180 m and GS2-GS2&apos; section with the depth of 150 m in the survey area, we set the height of the bench at 10 m and 15 m, and the angle of bench at 60o and 70o, respectively, and then reviewed the stability for dried condition and saturated condition. The result of examination indicated that it would be appropriate to set the bench height at 10m and the bench angle at 60o in developing the mine slopes concerned. History of the feldspar industry in the United States has been summarized by DuBois (I)*. The earliest production of feldspar in the United States is reported to have been from Mitchell County, North Carolina, about 1744, with the product shipped to England, In about 1825 several pegmatites were worked to a limited extent in Connecticut, with the production shipped to England. The first feldspar grinding facility was constructed about 1850 in Connecticut, with chaser mills used. Feldspar has been produced continuously in the United States since about 1870. Feldspar is produced from the following states: North Carolina, California, Georgia, Connecticut, South Carolina, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arizona, and Wyoming. Total United States production for 1969 will amount to approximately 900,000 tons. The most current published figures for world production is 1966, at which time 2,165,000 tons was produced. It is estimated that world production of feldspar for 1969 will amount to 2,410,000 tons. Historically, feldspar has been produced by hand sorting and hand cobbing of coarse block feldspar obtained from the intermediate and wall zones of zoned pegmatites. In the United States the reserve of known block feldspar, recoverable by hand sorting is nearing depletion. More emphasis is now placed on feldspar sources contained in finer grained rocks, especially coarse granites or fine-grained pegmatite and beach, dune, and river sands from which the feldspar is obtained by beneficiation.

ROCK BEHAVIOR has proved of national interest in a variety of fields. The behavior of rock consequent to a nuclear blast was used to detect such blasts, as criteria for the design of underground military defense installations that would resist nuclear blasts, and for judging the feasibility for peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. An obvious peaceful application of nuclear explosives would be for large-scale rock excavation, and plans were presented during the year to improve the present Panama Canal or create a new canal by this method. These plans were based largely on earlier crater tests that demonstrated rock behavior when subjected to a buried nuclear blast. A knowledge of rock behavior under impact was used to evaluate the materials of the moon by means of the geometric configurations visible in the close-up pictures of the moon surface taken by the U.S. rocket Ranger 7. The composition of the moon must be considered in devising methods for taking samples of the surface layers or in designing underground shelters as bases for future explorations of the moon.

The concept of selectively extracting copper from a low-grade dump leach solution followed by stripping the copper into an acid solution from which electrowon copper cathodes could be produced occurred to the Minerals Group of General Mills in the early 1960s.This simple, elegant idea has resulted in a technology by which about 2.2 million tonnes of high quality copper cathode was produced in year 2000. The growth of this technology is traced overtime with a discussion of the key plants, the key people and the important advances in leaching, plant design, reagents and electrowinning that have contributed to the growth of this technology. Some thoughts on potential further advances in the technology are also given.

In 2002 the authors updated the MFire model developed by the US Bureau of Mines. MineFire, developed by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc. (MVS), uses the MFire model to perform mine fire simulations on typical mine ventilation networks. The MineFire program is capable of producing visual schematics and other analysis tools for input and output of the MFire model. The MFire model, however, was limited to 500 branches and 10 fans. This paper discusses the newly modified MFire model that is now capable of modeling over 5000 branches and over 400 fans among other expansions and improvements. Given the long history and proven track record of MFire, the expansion did not modify the core calculation methods or results. This paper focuses on a general discussion of the MFire program and issues encountered in expansion of the algorithm. An example large network with simulation results is discussed.

In technological studies on steel considerable emphasis has been placed on the identification of the foreign inclusions, testimony of which is adequately given in the metallographic literature covering methods for their identification. The outstanding accomplishment in this field is the scheme devised by Campbell, Comstock and Wohrman for identifying various oxides, sulfides, silicates and other constituents by systematic etching tests and microscopic examination.&apos; The time involved in carrying out this procedure has led to attempts to secure quicker methods, or at least to shorten the time required to secure essential information. An example of this is the use of dark field illuminatin,2 but when this was tried out by the authors it was found that cavities and pits on the polished surface appeared bright on a dark field and could not be distinguished from small glassy inclusions. Still another means is the Leitz Ultropak, an instrument equipped with optical units for the illumination of the specimen by reflected light to secure an effect similar to dark field illumination. The structures are made visible in exceedingly sharp details by utilizing the inherent properties of the samples, such as refractive index, absorption coefficients and reflection powers. We have had no experience with the Ultropak, but a recent paper by Benedicks and Löfquist3 describes methods for determining the refractive index of (Fe, Mn) O and MnS by the use of this equipment. Presumably this method would be subject to about the same limitations as dark field illumination, though the, feature added by Benedicks and Löfquist appears to offer great promise in inclusion identification.

The electrical resistivities of aluminum alloys containing CU, Ge, Zn, Ag, Cd, and Mg were found to increase linearly with the atomic percentage of the solute atoms. Application of Linde&apos;s rule to these data suggests that each aluminum atom contributes 2.5 electrons to the metallic bond. ALTHOUGH aluminum invariably exhibits a Jt\. valence of three in ionic solids, it does not follow necessarily that its valence in the metallic state is also three. As a matter of record, many properties suggest that the number of bonding electrons in metallic aluminum is less than three. For example, as shown in Fig. 1, the atomic radii1 of the metallic elements in the solid state decrease with increasing atomic number at the beginning of any one period. The atomic radius of aluminum, however, is greater than that which would result from a regular decrease in atomic radius with increasing atomic number, suggesting that the number of bonding electrons in aluminum is somewhat less than three. Correlated with the anomalously large atomic radius of aluminum is its abnormally low melting temperature. As the atomic numbers increase in any one period, the melting temperatures of the metallic elements increase.&apos; As shown in Fig. 2, however, the melting temperature of aluminum (13) is only slightly greater than that of magnesium (12). Again the number of bonding electrons in metallic aluminum appears to be nearer two than the expected value of three. In addition Ageev and Ageeva3 alculated the electron density distribution in the aluminum lattice. A comparison of such electron density curves for various assumed valence states of aluminum with experimentally determined curves suggests that the actual number of bonding electrons in metallic aluminum is between two and three. Hume-Rothery and Raynor&apos;, " have suggested that the above-mentioned abnormalities are associated with the overlapping of the Brillouin zones of metallic aluminum when it is in the usual face-centered cubic structure. The importance of the number of bonding electrons in metals has been extended recently into the field of mechanical properties. While formerly it was thought that the plastic properties of alpha solid solutions were primarily dependent upon the lattice strain induced in the solvent by the solute, it is now known that the difference in the number of bonding electrons of the solute and solvent also has its influence on the plastic properties."1&apos; In order to achieve a satisfactory correlation of the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of aluminum alloys,"&apos;T however, it was necessary to assume that the number of bonding electrons contributed by aluminum was about two rather than the expected value of three. It appeared to be desirable, therefore, to seek other criteria for evaluating the number of bonding electrons contributed by aluminum to its alpha solid solutions, especially in view of the practical as well as the theoretical importance of the effect of valency on the plastic properties. Instrumented cable bolts developed at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health were used in conjunction with existing ground control systems to monitor rock mass loads at Tg Soda Ash’s trona mine, Granger, WY. Axial and shear loads were determined to levels of strain gauge accuracy of ±5 N or ±5 microstrain. These gauges were embedded in a remanufactured king wire that replaced the conventional king wire. Cable bolt performance, quality of grout, and installation techniques were also assessed. By using instrumented cables, a mine operator can determine axial load along the cable at predefined gauge locations. These data provide necessary input for an operator to design a safer working environment for miners.
