"A brief review of the Australian mining industry is given followed by a more detailed treatment of a study of the influence of primer Size on explosive performance. This is based on a joint research programme conducted by BHP Central Research Laboratories and Dyno Wesfarmers Ltd and examined the effect of the size of cast primers on the run up and steady state detonation velocitiesof ammonium nitrate based explosives as a function of blasthole diameter. The field trials examined a numter of the Dynamo 'Westfarmers HDF series of primers in conjunction with ANFO, emulsion and watergel explosives. Results indicate that the iun up velocity of 187 mm diameter ANFO charges is negligible using cast primers as small as 150g. However, emulsion and watergel explosives did exhibit run up in both 187 and 3:1mm diameter blastholes, independent of the size of primer. This could last from 7 to 10 blashole diameters"

Electrode control systems regulate power by physically positioning electrodes. Due to the size and weight of the electrodes, this is a slow process where power fluctuations of less than a few seconds are not fully corrected. Nickel laterite AC furnaces operating in high voltage, shielded arc mode typically incur frequent power variations of approximately +I- 20% around the power set point. To provide enhanced power control, Hatch has recently supplied, at commercial scale, a thyristor-switched reactance system called an SPLC. The SPLC incorporates predictive control software to operate furnaces at the maximum transformer rating by reducing the large power swings experienced without the SPLC. The resulting higher average power enables higher production, without increasing transformer or power plant capacity. A 60 MW production version of the SPLC has been commissioned on Falconbridge Dominicans's laterite nickel furnace, yielding excellent results with a 3 to I reduction in power fluctuations. PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. This work relates to wafer bumping technologies for flip chip packaging applications in the electronics industry. Nickel and its alloys are alternative under bump metallization (UBM) materials because of their slower reaction rates with Sn-based solder as compared to Cu-based UBMs. In this study, we compared the morphologies of the intermetallic compounds (IMC) formed between Sn-bearing solders (Sn3.5Ag and eutectic Sn-Pb) and two types of nickel- based UBMs, electroless Ni-P (EN) and sputtered nickel. Both chunky-type and needle-type of intermetallics were observed between the EN UBM and the solders. In the case of sputtered Ni UBM, there is only a layer of scallop-type intermetallics formed. The morphology change and growth kinetics of the IMC in thermal aging process were analysed. Kirkendall voids were noticed from samples of Sn3.5Ag solder vs Ni-P UBM that have undergone prolonged thermal aging at high temperature.

THE application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and under varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarine geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions.

ROM grade variability is one of the most important factors influencing plant product recovery. Due to the influence of grade variability on mine profits, it is deemed important to guarantee a proper homogenization of the ore through a well-planned blending and homogenization pile system from which the ore is reclaimed at an acceptable grade fluctuation. This study tests geostatistical simulation efficiency in predicting in situ grade variability. The methodology is illustrated using a data-set from a large phosphate mine in central Brazil. Additionally, real data obtained at the mine site during January and February 2007 were used to derive the actual grades of each pile formed during this period. Each pile was formed by a selection of blocks within a dig line and these lines mined along the year 2007 were also made available. Given the real grades, it was possible to reconciliate and validate the results predicted by the proposed methodology. The main outcome of this study is the opportunity to check the geostatistical simulation as a tool to quantify the variability of the homogenization system.

The wetting behavior of liquid polymers at solid surfaces and the adhesion forces involved at polymer-filler interfaces should always be considered in the preparation of high-quality polymer composites, including those made with mineral fillers. Spontaneous polymer spreading over the filler surface is a basic condition for the design of polymer-mineral composites. In this regard, the wetting and adhesion characteristics of polymer-mineral systems are reviewed. Based on this review it is clear that several aspects of wetting phenomena at mineral filler surfaces require further systematic study. Specifically, efforts should be made to determine the wetting characteristics of molten polymers at mineral-filler surfaces in greater detail. Also, the effects of mineral-surface contamination (including surface hydration) on wetting and adhesion phenomena need specific investigation. It is expected that an improved fundamental understanding of wetting and adhesion phenomena for polymer-mineral composites will provide the basis for further technological development.

The Downhole Seismic Imaging consortium was initiated by the Geological Survey of Canada and three Canadian mining companies to assess the usefulness of borehole seismic techniques for the exploration of massive sulphide deposits within areas of steeply dipping stratigraphy. Field tests were conducted over two sub-economic massive sulphide deposits located in Norman West, Ontario, and Halfmile Lake, New Brunswick, using various shot configurations and a three-component borehole receiver array. The Norman West deposit, or structures associated with the deposit, produce detectable seismic reflections as far away as 1500 m. However, these reflections are difficult to distinguish from fault reflections and lithological contacts near the base of the Sudbury Igneous Complex. At Halfmile Lake, the rock properties are favourable for direct orebody detection. The Halfmile Lake deposit has a clear but relatively complex seismic signature on the downhole data, showing not only P-wave reflections, but also strong reflected S-waves and modeconverted waves. Such prominent S-waves and converted waves have not been recognized previously in borehole or surface seismic data acquired over massive sulphide deposits. These waves add complexity to the interpretation but provide additional imaging capabilities. Reflected S-waves and converted waves should be considered when designing seismic surveys for mineral exploration.

The process for bio-remediation of sulphidic slag (BROSS) operates at 45 degrees C in a neutral (pH 7), aerobic aqueous environment in which sulphide in the slag is converted to sulphate. A two-stage version has been developed that involves quantitative chemical pre-oxidation of total sulphide to thiosulphate, followed by complete biooxidation of thiosulphate to sulphate. Ferric hydroxide, also produced, acts as a flocculant in the bioreactor effluent, concentrating heavy metal precipitates in the thickener as a sludge which can be returned to the smelter. The process has a high sulphate production rate and low acid and nutrient consumptions. Microorganism growth is the rate-limiting stage, requiring a minimum liquid residence time in the bioreactor of about 7 h. Although large quantities of oxygen are needed, sufficient gas mass transfer can be attained in an air-lift reactor. Products are an aqueous stream containing sodium sulphate with only trace levels of toxic heavy metals and a benign, toxic metal-containing sludge

The bioleaching of arsenopyrite, the oxidation of arsenate and the precipitation of ferric arsenate are competing reactions, hence their rates depend on the relative concentrations of the respective species, and the activity of the bacterial culture. Bacterial arsenic resistance may be attributed to the Pst+Pit-mutation and an energy dependent efflux pump. Pst+Pit-mutations result in a reduced uptake of arsenate. This enables the bacteria to survive in solutions in which the arsenate concentration is significantly higher than the arsenite concentration. However, the excretion of arsenate requires energy. Therefore, in the absence of an energy source or during periods of reduced bacterial activity, the inhibitory effect of arsenate may manifest at concentrations to which the culture has been adapted. The chemical ferric leaching rate of pyrite and arsenopyrite decrease with a decrease in the solution redox and may be described using a modified Butler-Volmer equation. The bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation kinetics of L. ferrooxidans also depend on the redox potential, and can be described using a Michaelis-Mententype model modified to account for both temperature and pH. A model developed using the independently determined ferric leaching, and ferrous-iron oxidizing kinetics, has been shown to compare well with the experimental data for the continuous bioleaching of pyrite. Rosario Dominicana, S.A., operates a gold processing complex at Pueblo Viejo, northwest of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The plant processes approximately 10,000 mtpd of oxide gold-bearing ore with a work index of 11 kWh/mt. The ore hardness has increased to about 17 kWh/mt. Metallurgical auditing of the plant was conducted? to find ways to modify the circuit to process hard ore without sacrificing throughput. In addition, unit operations were optimized to increase recovery and reduce operating cost,. The results of modifications made in the plant are discussed in this paper.

The waves of prospectors who struggled across the wide Alaskan wilderness between 1898 and 19 10 came close to but did not actually find the rich copper/zinc/silver deposits strung out along 161 km ( 100 miles) of felsic schist in the remote Brooks Range of northwestern Alaska. They had heard rumors of gold in the valley of the Kobuk River, so they skirted the Arctic ice pack in the Chukchi Sea and, in a force at least 800 men strong, ascended the Kobuk River in 1898. Twenty-eight placer mining camps were established but only a handful survived for more than a few years. One of the placers that died rapidly was Ruby Creek. A map showing the location of Alaskan mineral deposits is given in Fig. 1. The Ruby Creek miners, disappointed with the scarcity of gold in that creek, followed copper-bearing float to two places where the float was especially plentiful. Pits, a short adit, and a shallow shaft uncovered copper carbonates, bornite, and chalcopyrite in fractured limestone but the remoteness of the district blocked efforts to sell the claims or to raise capital for development. Shortly after 1906, the copper prospects were abandoned and, except for an account published in 1913 by the US Geological Survey, they were forgotten, as were the names of the prospectors.

Introduction The geological processes that form coal can also concentrate trace elements in the coal. For example, the average concentration of arsenic in bituminous coal (20 ppm) is ten times the average concentration found in all the other rocks that make up the earth's crust (2 ppm). Similarly, other elements, such as antimony, cadmium, mercury and selenium, are more concentrated in coal than in the earth's crust. When coal is burned, trace elements can be further concentrated. Although no new constraints on trace clement emissions were placed on the power generation industry under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, the act does mandate a three-year study of air toxics. Any new regulations aimed at electric utilities as a result of this Federally-mandated study will almost assuredly be very costly-an estimated $1 billion per year. Many trace elements in coal are associated with mineral matter. For example, arsenic is commonly associated with pyrite, cadmium with sphalerite, chromium with clay minerals, mercury with pyrite and cinnabar, nickel with millerite, pyrite and other sulfides, and selenium with lead selenide, pyrite and other sulfides (Finkelman, 1980). There are also cases in which some of these elements are organically bound. Just as both organic and pyritic sulfur can be found in the same coal, the same trace element may be both organically bound and present as part of a mineral in the sane coal. Physical coal cleaning techniques are effective in removing mineral matter from coal and can potentially remove at least some of the trace elements associated with specific minerals, thereby reducing the release of these elements into the atmosphere. Conventional coal cleaning to remove trace elements As part of a project funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, CQ Inc., a wholly-owned EPRI subsidiary located in western Pennsylvania, has demonstrated that large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements are possible if conventional coal cleaning techniques are properly applied. Four examples are given in Tables 1 to 4. In each example, the results shown were generated by cleaning the coal at CQ Inc.'s commercial-scale cleaning test facility. Cleaning results for Upper Freeport Seam coal from Northern Appalachia are provided in Table 1. Data are presented in the table in two ways: as a weight-based concentration (parts per million) and as a concentration per heat unit (grams per billion Btu). Grams per billion Btu is analogous to pounds per million Btu, but avoids the use of numbers with many decimal places. The heat-based concentration provides a better measure of boiler impacts, because the increased heating value obtained through coal cleaning reduces the number of tons that must be burned to produce a given thermal output. Reducing the quantity of coal burned reduces the quantity of trace elements entering the boiler. This raw coal is relatively high in several trace elements of environmental concern, including arsenic, cadmium and chromium. Cleaning provided large reductions in the quantity of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, fluorine, lead, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc. The results for tests with a Powder River Basin coal, Rosebud/McKay, are presented in Table 2. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, fluorine, mercury, nickel, selenium and zinc were observed with cleaning. The concentration of chromium increased with cleaning, while lead concentration increased in one test and decreased in another. Table 3 presents test results for Croweburg Seam coal from Oklahoma. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium and zinc were obtained with cleaning. Smaller reductions were obtained with lead and nickel, while chromium, fluorine and mercury increased in at least one of the tests. Table 4 presents cleaning test data for Kentucky No.11 Seam coal. In this case, large reductions were obtained with all elements measured. In general, these data indicate that physical coal cleaning is effective in reducing the concentration of many trace elements, especially if they are present in the coal at relatively high concentrations. The degree of reduction achieved is coal-specific, relating in part to the degree of mineral association of the specific trace element and the degree of liberation of the trace element-bearing mineral. A process has been developed to refine high-grade commercial aluminum to 99.99 pct purity. This enzploys precipitating titanium, vanadium, and zirconiu~ as borides. The upgraded liquid is partially crystallized under conditions that prevent massive freezing. The resulting crystals are compacted and washed free of adhernig impure liquid aluminum by melting the top crystals while draining off the liquid. Finally, the bottorn portion of the crystal bed is melted and removed as the pure product. Leakage from the crystallizat~on vessel is prevented by a layer of alumina granules that are not wetted by the aluminum. ALUMINUM of 99.99 pct purity is desired in a variety of applications. These include electrolytic capacitors, catalyst carriers, decorative trim for automobiles, aluminum powder, and high-strength alloys. This market was for many years filled by refining commercial-purity aluminum in a three-liquid-layer electrolytic cell of the type originally proposed by Hoopes. To meet the expanding need for lower-cost high-purity aluminum, a refining process based on chemical precipitation and fractional crystallization was developed. The availability of this super-purity metal was announced in November 1961, and three patents1-3 relating to the process were issued in 1965. An alternate process, comprising continuous fractional crystallization of a portion of a liquid-aluminum feed stream under conditions of strong agitation at the surface of the growing crystals, was published by Dewey4 in 1965. Earlier proposals by Larsen 5 and by Regner6 also emphasized the advantage of rapid agitation of the melt in the region of the crystallization zone. johnson 7 more recently proposed extracting purified aluminum from an alloy by mixing crystals of pure aluminum into the molten alloy, allowing them to grow, and removing the pure aluminum as by casting. Aamot's 8 recent patent describes a freeze refining process that involves controlled partial freezing against cooled moving retort walls. The Alcoa process to produce high-purity aluminum is schematically described in Fig. 1. Relatively pure aluminum is treated with boron in a furnace (a) to precipitate high melting point impurities, the supernatant liquid is transferred to a crystallization vessel (b), the liquid is partially crystallized with mechanized "tamping" (c), the remaining impure liquid is tapped out and the crystal bed partially and directionally re-melted to wash the underlying crystals (d), and the balance of the crystals is melted and withdrawn as high-purity aluminum (e). PRINCIPLES OF FRACTIONAL CRYSTALLIZATION Commonly encountered impurity elements form two types of systems with aluminum. Titanium, vanadium, and some other transition elements in periodic groups IV, V, and VI are the high melting point impurities. Initial solidification of aluminum containing small percentages of these elements will produce solid markedly enriched in them at temperatures slightly above the freezing point of high-purity aluminum. Most other elements, such as silicon and iron, produce eutectic type reactions with aluminum. In this case the first solid formed on initial solidification at temperatures slightly below the freezing point for high-purity aluminum is markedly depleted while the remaining liquid is enriched in these elements. The Bureau of Mines for a number of years has been carrying on an investigation of properties of crude oils from producing fields in the United States and has published a series of reports on different fields, including oil fields of Texas3. Production Data The Spindletop field was discovered in 1901 when the pay sand was found at deaths of about 800 feet. During the following twenty-five years a number of attempts were made to find a deep productive sand. All attempts sere failures until a roll drilled by the Yount Lee Oil Company found oil late in 1925. An intensive drilling campaign began at once, and the production of the Spindletop field increased to a daily average of 93,217 barrels in September, 1926; the present production is estimated at 66,000 barrels doily. The general types of industrial behaviour of liberated valuable sulfide minerals in the 0 - 10 ¦m size fraction are described and tests to explore on site at a concentrator the general nature of any deficient behaviour are discussed. In addition, the general types of behaviour of the gangue minerals in this size fraction are also described in terms of their mechanisms for recovery. These behaviours are also discussed in terms of the type of grinding device and grinding environment in which they were produced and the target grinding product size. Major recent improvements in the industrial capabilities of grinding devices are discussed.Present difficulties in characterisation of particles in the 0 - 10 ¦m range are described and desirable improvements for the future are outlined. Further, desirable improvements for industrial processing of valuable minerals in this size range are discussed along with some remedial actions.

The main direction of research was the application of autoclave technology for the flotation concentrates or biooxidation feedstocks. The industry modernization also expects the possibility of increasing the yield of the flotation concentrate, to allow an increase in gold extraction in flotation circuit. This paper provides brief description of results obtained for concentrates with the yield of 4 and 8%, as well as corresponding biooxidation feedstocks. Technological efficiency of autoclave oxidation is shown for both concentrates and biooxidation feedstocks. The process has been evaluated on a laboratory and a continuous pilot plant scale. Gold extractions from POX discharge are ranging from 94-97% for each product, with only 5-7 kg/t cyanide consumed.

THIS paper will present a review of the mining operations of one of Canada's most lately established gold mining districts (1). The history of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas is interesting in view of the fact that, although they have long been the scene of a certain amount of mining activity, they remained little more than an uninhabited wilderness until 1933, since which time ten producing gold mines and mills have been established in permanent operation, eight of these having entered production since the beginning of 1937. As complete a background as possible will be given concerning the major influences having a bearing upon living and economic conditions in the mining communities. The object, here, is to show the diversity of problems which demand the attention of the operator starting up and operating a new mine in present times, and to indicate the ways in which these problems are successfully met in this district. A description of the power facilities and plant equipment will be followed by a summary of the problems encountered and methods applied in exploration and development. This is to aid in forming a background showing the circumstances which influence the mining methods and costs of the various operations. The paper will conclude with a description of the mining methods used and the costs of the operations, including summarized analyses of the stoping methods and mining conditions. The various phases of operation will be dealt with separately, in so far as this is possible, in order to present clearly the salient features. It is necessary, however, that the reader bear completely and constantly in mind the fact that in actual operations these phases arc, to a large extent, intimately related and greatly affect each other, as well as being, in turn, affected by other circumstances beyond the control of the operator. A few of these circumstances are: capital available during the development period and early stages of productive operation; strength of rock comprising the ore and its boundary walls; grade, size, shape, and location of ore-bodies; and many other natural items which must be carefully weighed in relation to the details of operation.
