The U.S. economy made significant progress in 1984. The current-dollar gross national product (GNP), the market value of the Nation's output of goods and services, increased almost 11 percent over that of 1983 to slightly more than $3.66 trillion (table 1), and the real gross national product increased almost 7 percent.2/ Such rapid growth in real GNP has not occurred since the early 1950's. Real final sales increased only 5 percent during 1984, and real business inventories increased $24.8 billion ($57.9 billion in current dollars). Total employment of 106.7 million was an all-time record, and the unemployment rate declined from 9.5 percent in 1983 to 7.4 percent in 1984. During 1984 the U.S. dollar showed great strength on international markets, contributing to large current-dollar negative net exports of goods and services (-$62.5 billion) and even larger negative net exports of merchandise (-$107.6 billion). The strong dollar and the substantial increase in net imports of goods and services helped reduce U.S. inflationary pressures and provided a major source of loanable funds for financing domestic private investment.

As part of an overall strategy to make significant new technological advances for the sustainability of the mineral processing and related process industries CSIRO Minerals has developed a new dry separation device. It represents a technology breakthrough and has the potential to radically change the way in which dry particle size classification is achieved in the minerals industry. Conventional dry separation techniques have limited applications and often suffer from low productivity, high operating costs, low separation efficiency, the need for dust control and a lack of flexibility. In the absence of efficient dry techniques, wet processing is often used. The use of wet processing either requires the introduction of water into a separation process, which causes environmental concerns through the need for water supply and tailings dams or the use of æunfriendlyÆ chemicals for dense media separations that have considerable impact on handling and disposal. Wet processing also increases operating costs due to plant instability, materials handling, thickening, filtration and product drying. The new CSIRO technology exploits a combination of natural and applied forces to achieve specific particle motions that produce size separation. In doing so, many of the traditional shortcomings of dry separation have been overcome. The CSIRO Dry Particle Size Separator is ideally suited for dry size separation applications within the size range 1 mm to 30 ¦mfor moderate moisture levels (2 per cent), have low unit throughput, produce a fixed cut size and are therefore impractical where very high unit capacity and low operating costs are required. This paper presents a review of dry separation devices together with details of the new Dry Particle Size Separator and typical results for a number of materials, including iron ore and quarry dust.

In Kiowa County, Okla., extensive deposits of clay are closely associated with pre-Cambrian anorthosites and gabbros. Investigation by the Bureau of Mines, including 1,723 feet of auger drilling, has shown the presence of very large quantities of clay containing between 20 and 25 percent alumina. All of the material contains large amounts of impurities, and even the best clays, selected for their relatively low content of iron, titanium, and magnesium, are unsuitable for the production of alumina by the sulfuric-acid process The soda-lime process gave somewhat better results, the product being nearer specification for commercial alumina. The clays are not amenable to beneficiation by simple sedimentation processes, and the alumina content could not easily be increased to produce material suitable for any alumina process.

Concentrators processing PGM bearing ores make use of polysaccharide depressants to reduce the recovery of the undesired naturally floatable gangue minerals, mainly silicates, present in the ore. Recent work has shown that high depressant dosages can completely depress naturally floatable gangue and thus prevent it from reporting to the concentrate. These high depressant dosages can, however, have a negative effect on the recovery of valuable minerals present in the ore by reducing the stability of the froth. In order to counterbalance the effects of depressant addition, frothers are added. It is, however, preferable to maintain independent control over bubble size and froth stability which is difficult to achieve with only one frother. An alternative strategy is, to use a blend of frothers, e.g. a weaker frother in combination with a stronger frother. Such a system allows an additional degree of freedom: changing the ratio of the two frothers, that would provide more independent control of bubble size and froth stability. This study demonstrates, through the use of batch flotation tests, how blending low molecular weight alcohols with commercially available frothers impact the solids and water recovery, as well as the valuable mineral recovery and concentrate grade in different PGM ores. Higher water and solids recoveries together with higher valuable mineral recoveries (>90% copper and >70% nickel) were obtained from tests using frother blends.

A wide variety of plants are able to extract nickel (Ni) from soils and accumulate this metal in their foliage. Hydrometallurgical processes have been developed to recover Ni in the form of metal or salts, starting from the plant A. murale. They include: (1) a combustion step, to obtain ash containing 15–20% Ni; (2) a leaching step; and (3) purification. That whole flowsheet has been thoroughly investigated, and the processes scaled up to the pilot scale. Another strategy is presented here, consisting of recovering Ni without burning the plant. Ni can be extracted from the dry plant by water leaching, but the leachate is a multi-element solution from which Ni has to be separated. Selective precipitation of Ni hydroxide is not possible since Ni is bound to organic ligands. In this work, the plant leachate is processed by adsorption on the chelating resin DOWEXTM M4195. The results showed that Ni was selectively retained whereas the other main cations were not. Nickel could be recovered at the elution step. This methodology needs to be further investigated but these initial results are very encouraging and open the possibility of Ni recovery by agromining.

In connection with these activities, the Bureau determines the explosion hazards of combustible gases, liquids, and solids and investigates means by which explosions may be eliminated or reduced in violence.The limits of inflammability and ignition temperature of combustible gases, vapors, and solids are of practical importance because such materials can be manufactured, transported, and used with greater safety, provided the range of concentrations and temperatures that cause explosions are known.Many organic compounds, which until a few year ago were merely laboratory curiosities, are now being manufactured in large quantities owing to the national emergency, particularly those chemicals entering into the manufacture of synthetic rubber, a product that is playing a major role in the Government program of national defense. This re Jolt gives results relative to the limits of inflammability of styrene and its ignition temperature in air and oxygen. This combustible liquid is now used extensively in the manufacture of synthetic rubber."

"Underwater hydrothermal vents are known since the 1970s and their importance for the global economy is growing as new discoveries and new assessments are made each year (Cherkashov et al., 2010; Corliss et al., 1979). The similarities of seafloor massive sulfides, representing the younger versions of the well exploited on land volcanogenic massive sulfides, bring an increased awareness to the potential of the sea (Ajan G. Galley, 2007; Hannington et al., 2011; Herzig and Hannington, 1995). The Arctic Ocean presents itself as an opportunity to study new interest areas and numerous hydrothermal systems (active and inactive) were discovered along the Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge (AMOR) (Pedersen et al., 2010b). The Mohns ridge is an ultraslow spreading ridge of the AMOR (Vogt, 1986) where two hydrothermal vent sites were recently discovered, the Jan Mayen and the Loki’s Castle (Pedersen et al., 2010a; Pedersen et al., 2009; Pedersen, 2005). Here we compare these two Arctic hydrothermal systems, which represent two well-differentiated end-members of hydrothermal fields in the region."

The flow of material in a pump mixer-settler extractor was studied photographically and visually by injecting dye into the equipment and following its advance through the various sections of the equipment. Volumetric measure of the flow was obtained from analysis of the photographs. The organic portion of the settling chamber, the fluid surrounding the pump mixer, and the pump mixer itself were found to be operating in plug flow. The aqueous portion of the settling chamber was found to be partially mixed. Significant dynamic effect was noted due to density changes in the feed streams. The quantitative and qualitative observations made of the flow within a single stage should be of value in predicting the flow patterns in all similar equipment, including opaque and liquid metal solvent extraction systems.

IN a recent paper on titanium-rich Ti-Fe alloys,' the hardness of quenched powder specimens was given, together with the amounts of martensitic a they contained. The values disagreed in two respects with previous determinations that Worner² made on lump specimens: 1—Some martensitic a' is formed in powder specimens of alloys containing up to 12 atomic pct Fe. On the other hand, Worner reports that, although his results on quenched lumps are not conclusive, alloys containing more than about 4 pct Fe "appear to consist of retained ß'' although they "may not be strictly unaltered solid solutions." 2—According to Worner, quenched lump specimens show a maximum hardness at a composition about 3.5 pct Fe. Earlier -experiments by the authors showed a maximum hardness of martensitic alloys in powder form at 10 pct Fe. Accordingly, more experiments have been conducted in order to confirm these differences and to determine with more accuracy the minimum composition of quenched lump specimens that consist entirely of retained ß. Lump samples?x?x1/20 in. were quenched from 1000°C in helium and, on the whole, showed similar hardness values to the specimens that Worner water-quenched from 950°C. The hardness curve the authors obtained shows a more pronounced peak, but in other respects it is very similar to Worner's curve (Fig. 1). While it was possible to make fairly reliable measurements of the percentage of martensitic a in quenched powders (by Geiger spectrometer), the solid samples allowed only approximate estimates to be made from visual observation of line intensities on film. Retained ? begins to appear in quenched lumps containing 0.2 pct Fe; at 2.2 pct Fe there are approximately equal quantities of ß and a'; in a 4.7 pct Fe alloy only a trace of a' appears. These results are represented as a curve on Fig. 1. The hardness and constitution of powder samples were verified by repeating both types of quenching experiment described in the earlier paper.' Identical results were obtained by the two methods, and they agreed with the figures published previously (Fig. 1). The appearance of the martensitic structure under the microscope is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The mar-tensite needles are coarser in the lump; otherwise the structures are similar. Three conclusions are made at this juncture: 1— The properties of quenched lumps reported by Worner are confirmed, on the whole. The differences between them and the properties of powders are probably due to an effect of specimen size. Differences of behavior in various sizes of specimen have been observed previously in martensite reactions in Fe-Mn alloys3 and in Cu-A1 alloys. 2—The maximum hardness of both quenched lumps and quenched powders appears at a composition where martensite formation has all but ceased. In this respect, powders and lumps behave similarly. 3—Martensitic a' has essentially the same microscopic appearance both in powders and lumps. The Fosfago phosphate rock concentrator is located in the state of Goias, Brazil, 300 km south of Brasilia. The ore is from an enriched carbonatite, which was discovered in 1971 during exploration for pyrochlore niobium ore. The flowsheet was developed in Brazil by personnel from Agrico Chemical Company and Consolidated South America. Engineering was provided by Codemin, a subsidiary of Consolidated, Engineering and construction management was pro- vided by both Agrico and Consolidated personnel who formed the Fosfago team. The concentrator was designed for 500,000 tpy of 37-38% P2Oj dried product. The facilities consist of open pit mining, crushing, stockpiling, and concentration. The product is pipelined seven km to a filtering, flash drying, and railroad loadout station. The plant was successfully started in May 1979.

APPLICATION of seismic methods to the location of buried channels in placer mining is fairly common knowledge, yet some of the facets of seismic refraction surveys have remained obscure in their application to mining. This description by a member of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation team investigating bedrock at the Oso Dam site, may offer a lead to wider application of the method for bedrock determinations in engineering of mine and mill plants, tailing disposal, and water supply. It may also offer assistance in planning geological exploration in areas covered by overburden. Pertinent, and perhaps more than passingly significant, is that the seismic survey of the Oso dam site started at noon and was completed the afternoon of the next day. Location Oso dam site is on the Navajo River, Archuleta, County, Colo., 30 miles southeast of Pagosa Springs, Colo., 10 miles northwest of Chama, N. M. Bedrock at the proposed dam site is Mesa Verde Formation, Cretaceous age sandstone. The nearest good sandstone exposure is about 5/8 of a mile upstream from the location of the seismic determinations. The material above bedrock is sand and gravel with sandy loam soil covering benches above the river. The site appeared favorable, after a geologic and topographic reconnaissance, but overburden thickness was unknown. Exploratory drilling was not contemplated in the near future so a short seismic investigation was selected as the most suitable method of determining depth to bedrock. Field Procedure Geophysically, a seismic depth investigation is simply the measurement of depth from ground surface to the top of a layer which transmits seismic waves at a higher velocity. In this case the high-velocity seismic layer tentatively correlates with the Mesa Verde sandstone. Field procedure required a seismic explorationline or "spread" with 12 geophones set at measured intervals. Explosive charges were buried at few feet in the ground and detonated at shotpoints near the ends of the spread, and at intermediate points. The time of travel of the seismic waves from the shotpoints through the ground to each of the geophones along the spread was measured and recorded photographically with equipment housed in a field truck. The seismograph on each spread provided a time-travel graph. From it were computed the speed of seismic waves in various layers below the surface and depth to each different seismic layer below the shotpoint. In the case of the Oso dam site it was possible, in addition, to determine the depths below certain geophones, because there were only two seismic layers involved. Interpretation In seismic exploration waves are refracted from the top of layers which often correspond to divisions between subsurface formations. When drill holes are available the geologic logs offer a means of correlating stratigraphic breaks with seismic layers, improving reliability of seismic interpretation in terms of depth to bedrock or other geologic terms. There were no drill holes available in the case of the work at the Oso dam site. Geologic conditions appeared favorable for seismic technique because of excellent contrast in seismic wave velocity between the overburden and the Mesa Verde formation. The upper layer had a velocity of approximately 2500 fps and was interpreted as overburden, the lower layer had a velocity of approximately 9000 fps and was assumed to be the sandstone. These velocities are of the order expected in these materials. The seismographs obtained at the Oso dam site were excellent. The energy from the shot came in strongly at each geophone, giving an easily read record. Time-travel graphs plotted from wave arrival times were uniform and made interpretation comparatively easy. In Spreads 1 and 2 near the river the lower velocity layer was 12 to 15 ft deep. For the spreads on higher ground, or the bench south of the river, it was from 15 to 29 ft deep.

By S FREDERICK RAVITZ AND KENNETH E FISHER (Tech Pub 681, also Trans , vol 121 2300 words) Four liquids are ordinarily produced in lead smelting, namely, bullion, speiss, matte and slag To determine whether these exist together in equilibrium, the distribution of gold and silver among them was measured To crucibles containing similar mixtures of all four products, varying amounts of silver were added, and the crucibles were heated together under the same conditions for 3 hr, during which the charges melted and separated into four layers After cooling, these layers were assayed for silver, and the distribution coefficients, 1 e , the ratios of the concentration of silver in any particular layer to that in the bullion, were calculated In each experiment, each distribution coefficient was found to be constant, regardless of the amount of silver used Similar results were obtained using gold instead of silver The constancy of the distribution coefficients indicates that the bullion, speiss, matte, and slag exist together in equilibrium

"Aluminium rolling processing from ingots to cold rolled coils comes with a lot of challenges especially in controlling defective products in casting, hot mill and cold mill operations. Hence this study focused on reducing defects at mills and cast-house using six sigma approaches. The use of six sigma approach will help the production experts to determine the gap between its operation and world class process. Practical data from First Aluminium Rolling mills were presented and analysed and mini improvement projects were proposed based on organisation need to achieve excellence. This study encourages aluminium alloy industries to pursue process improvement projects on the basis of analysis on data obtained from their shop floor, hence ensuring that through this, recovery is improved and cost of poor quality is reduced.INTRODUCTION Engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986 introduced a new concept in which a set of techniques and tools are used for process improvement by controlling variations (defects). These tools and techniques are explained by an acronym DMAIC. Improving the quality of process through these methods helps identify and reduce variations which paves way for organisational excellence. Foster-Miller has recently developed a new concept for a highly specialized shaft lining system. This innovative shaft lining system uses a continuous slip forming placement technique, lining the shaft from the bottom up such as in a raised bored shaft. Although this part is not unique, the concept is designed to use polyurethane foam instead of concrete for the liner material. Furthermore, the concept is designed to attain rates of advance of 30 m/h (98 fph). The polyurethane foam liner is designed to be thinner (100 mm or 4 in.) than a conventional concrete liner (300 mm or 12 in.). It will eliminate the high cost associated with the erection and operation of an on-site concrete batch plant. The system will be designed to operate remotely, requiring few personnel for its operation. This system (or parts of it) may be appropriate where fast construction speed is required or where a jointless liner is needed.

We have developed new recycling technologies, based upon an eco-friendly biotechnology, in order to extract precious and rare metals sourced from end-of-life products and electronics. We have been focusing on the metal ion-reducing bacteria, Shewanella algae and Shewanella oneidensis, that are able to reduce and deposit gold ions (Au(III)) or PGMs ions (Pd(II), Pt(IV) and Rh(III)) into metal nanoparticles at room temperature within 120 min. When processing the aqua regia leachate of printed circuit boards, Shewanella bacteria were able to rapidly and selectively collect gold ions under acidic conditions in the presence of heavy metal ions, proposing a new bio-recovery system for gold. This biotechnological procedure also has the potential to allow the recovery of PGMs from the leachate of automotive catalysts. Shewanella bacteria were also able to successfully perform the complete reduction and deposition of the PGM ions. The ability to collect the PGM ions suggests that this represents a new process for the biorecovery of PGMs from used automotive catalysts. Our proposed biological method enables the rapid and highly efficient recovery of precious and rare metals via separation and concentration utilizing microbial reactions at room temperature.

Slope design in an open pit mine includes determining bench height, bench face angle and berm width. Case histories are presented of two highwall slopes (160 and 220 m or 525 and 720 ft high) excavated in dipping strata in an op¬erating coal mine. These examples illustrate the influence that bench face angle can have on the stability of an entire slope. The two highwall slopes, the lower of which experienced significant instability, were excavated in approximately the same lithologic and structural environment. The main differences between the slopes were the angle at which the bench faces were excavated and the excavating methods that were used. Relevent aspects are also described of the engineering geology, slope design and excavation procedures.

In recent years, considerable advances have taken place worldwide in the design and construction of first tunnel linings. With these advances, there is a tendency to move away from traditional support that includes heavy open profiles of rolled steel arches, to a lighter solution with the use of an optimized tubular steel cross section rib, and shotcrete reinforced with steel mesh and/or steel fibers, providing a continuous support (Lunardi, 1982). The development of tubular ribs has provided greater design options, increasing flexibility to engineers and contractors while providing a efficient and cost effective construction method. In this article, the authors describe numerical and experimental investigation on this problem, suggesting as a new first lining steel arch design approach by using tubular ribs cross section as new technical solution for first lining underground support.
