THE rapid increase in cost of discovering new orebodies by churn drilling in the Tri-State district has led to some attempts to lessen the expense by using geophysical methods. Electrical prospecting was tried three or four years ago, but no successful results were recorded. In 1926, the Federal Mining and Smelting Co. engaged the North American Exploration Co., of Houston, Texas, to make some tests with the torsion, balance. At first, it was thought that the most favorable conditions for discovery of ore deposits with the torsion balance would be in locations where the ore was known to occur at rather shallow depths, FIG. 1.-CROSS-SECTION OF DUENWEG LEASE. therefore the first trial was made at Duenweg, east of Joplin, where some zinc ore had been developed at a depth of 130 ft. The gravity gradients at 61 stations on a tract of about seventeen acres indicated plainly one large zone of maximum gravity and a smaller narrow zone of minimum gravity. Fourteen churn-drill holes, half of which struck .ore, show that all the ore found was located outside the zones of maximum and minimum gravity. In the zone of maximum, gravity the limestone beds were closest to the surface, and the first chert beds encountered were at the greatest depth. The results (shown in Table 1) indicated that the gravity of the limestone was greater than the gravity of the fractured chert together with its orebodies, and probably also greater than the bouldery soil and clay on top of the limestone. A cross-section of the Duenweg lease is shown in Fig. 1.

As shown in former publications there are problems in load sharing of backstops in multiple drives of conveyors. Therefore, detailed calculation methods and design recommendations are required. In this paper various designs of load sharing methods are described and a dynamic torque calculation method will be presented. With this method the loadsharing properties for low and high speed backstops are calculated and compared. These properties depend on the spring characteristic of the drive train between backstop and load. Furthermore, the properties depend on the method of torquearm support and shock absorber configuration. Remarkable differences for external and internal backstops are shown

The centenary of Julia Ward Howe, author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," is of particular interest to the members of the Institute because of the very active part that has been taken in the affairs of the Institute by her son, Dr. H. M. Howe. By an order of the Board of Education, the one hundredth anniversary of Mrs. Howe's birth, May 27, was observed in the public schools of New York City with the singing of the fatuous battle hymn. Boston, the city of her adoption, celebrated her centenary by a service in the Church of the Disciples, where Governor Coolidge made an address, and in which John Andrew Post took a prominent part. General Pershing sent a letter, which was read by the Rev. Abraham Mitrie Rihbany, in which he said: "It is a great privilege to bear witness to the widespread effect of ?The Battle Hymn of the Republic? on the morale of the fighting men. It is unique in its religious fervor and enthusiasm and whenever sung it can have but the same effect which it produced when it was first sung in the Civil War."

As you know most of the gold and silver is produced by one of the following processes: (1) Agitated Leaching - Carbon adsorption or Merrill-Crowe (2) Heap Leaching - Carbon adsorption or Merrill-Crowe The figure 1 shows a typical flowsheet for recovery of gold and silver using Agitated or Pachuca Leaching Operation. The ore is crushed and ground and then leached in cyanide tanks solution using either Pachucas with air agitation or tanks with mechanical agitation. The soluble metal values are separated from the pulp by counter-current washing. The precious metals from cyanide solution are either recovered by zinc dust (Merrill-Crowe Process) or by loading on carbon and stripping with hot caustic cyanide solution. Gold and silver are electrowon on steel wool cathodes.

Mountain bumps have been a problem in the coal-mining industry since the 1920's. The problem became severe in the late 40's and early 50's with the introduction of mechanized mining. Fatalities and serious injuries resulted from mountain bumps during this period. Mountain bumps again caused fatalities in the 80 's. Interviews were conducted mostly with retired coal miners having experience in bump conditions with five different coal companies. These men held positions as president, general manager, roof-control specialist, mining engineer, inspector, superintendent, mine foreman, shift foreman, section foreman, miner operator, electrician, and general laborer. Together, their comments give a good idea of the things tried to mitigate mountain bumps in the Appalachian Coal Fields.

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. Several foaming aluminum samples of different density were prepared in a semi?industrial scale experimental system, Their properties such as the energy absorption characteristics, mechanical properties, heat conductivity and acoustical properties were measured. The results showed that the foaming aluminum with a density of 0.5 to 0.6 g/em3J has the best energy absorption and this makes it suitable as the ensuring bar of the automobiles and also as a cushion material for the engine. The foaming aluminum with a density of 0.25 to 0.4 g/em3 has the best acoustical properties and heat conductivity resistance, which is suitable for the door filling material, the ceiling and the partition or the car engine.

Ground freezing has been used for over 100 years to provide shoring and ground water cutoffs for hundreds of projects worldwide, including drilled shafts, tunnels and cofferdams. Typically, these cases involved difficult soil/water problems where ground freezing was likely the only solution. This paper discusses a recent ground freezing project where a frozen soil wall was used for a more conventional problem. A 4-foot-thick frozen soil wall was used to provide shoring and groundwater cutoff for a 20-foot-deep excavation during construction of a cast-in-place concrete storm water detention vault. The site is located along the northbound on-ramp to I405 from westbound SR522 in Woodinville, Washington. The frozen soil wall was successfully formed in soils consisting of till fill over soft organic silt and loose saturated sand in about 3 weeks. The depth to ground water varied from about 4 to 8 feet over the site. The unfrozen soil inside the frozen soil wall was excavated vertically to the frozen soil boundary. The vertical excavation remained open for approximately 2 months with no dewatering required. On one side, fully-loaded dump trucks and other construction equipment operated within 6 feet of the wall face with zero wall movement. This paper addresses the construction issues related to installation and operation of ground freezing shoring. The overall wall performance of the frozen soil wall as well as basic geotechnical design issues are also discussed.

O desenvolvimento de aços de alta resistência associados à boa tenacidade é uma alternativa para redução de custos na construção e instalação de oleodutos e gasodutos, devido à possibilidade de redução da espessura dos tubos sem que seu desempenho seja afetado. Os aços da classe API (American Petroleum Institute) pertencem ao grupo de aços ARBL (Alta Resistência Baixa Liga) que possuem as combinações desejáveis de resistência à tração, ductilidade, tenacidade e soldabilidade. No processo de laminação a quente o comportamento dos aços está diretamente relacionado aos parâmetros de processamento como temperatura, deformação, taxa de deformação, taxa de resfriamento e tempo entre passes. O controle desses parâmetros é importante na determinação da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas do material. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o comportamento termomecânico do aço API 5L X80M–PSL2 através de ensaios de torção a quente isotérmicos. Através desses ensaios serão determinados a tensão e deformação de pico, tensão e deformação crítica e a porcentagem de amaciamento do material.

The estimation of the spatial variation of the b-value of the Gutenberg- Richter relationship is important for both the general interpretation of the mechanism of rock mass response and seismic hazard assessment. The interpretation of b-value as a parameter of rock mass response is discussed in this paper. The methods applied to evaluate the spatial variation of b-value and the algorithm for obtaining the magnitude of completeness and b-value for subsets of data are presented with some verification analyses. The algorithms presented enable the automation of a spatial evaluation of b-value.

What is the meaning of the Life of a Mine (LOM) if that mine results in a requirement for water treatment in perpetuity? ‘In perpetuity’ is of course a duration with no relationship to a Life-of-Mine or what might rightly be regarded by external stakeholders as a fair and reasonable post-mine recovery period. It exceeds the life span of investors, mine managers and governments, indeed even of capital markets as we know them, and of corporate and individual memories.In mine and mine closure planning, decisions are usually based at least to a significant extent on traditional economic analysis underlain by discounted cash flows (DCF). For investments in income-producing facilities, such as mining development and equipment, and ore-processing plant and equipment, this analysis reflects commercial reality and allows for comparison of competing investments. However, for environmental and social infrastructure, the same analysis using the same input parameters, especially the discount rate applied to cash flows, can lead to a bias against the adoption of best practices for non-investor stakeholders. This report describes magnetic field measurements in the Helvetia Coal Co. Lucene #8 Mine for purposes of deriving a mapping of the magnetic field strength covering the major haulageways which contain conductors. The measurements were performed by Terry S. Cory, P.E. under U.S. Bureau of Mines purchase order P0372716. Assisting in performance of the measurements were personnel from the Bureau of Mines, PMSRC, and Helvetia Coal Co. Acknowledgement is given to Engineer Tom Strong of Helvetia Coal Co. who accompanied the measurement team and who lended support in performing the measurements and in supplying valuable engineering information for use in evaluation of the results. The results of the testing at medium frequency show that coverage of the entire mine area containing conductors can be achieved employing wireless radio techniques whereby radio signals are coupled into and are carried by these conductors. These results confirm earlier qualitative testing of the Collins Mine Wireless Radios in this mine. These results, performed over the frequency range 71-2890 KHz, illustrate the effect of frequency on the radio propagation with the conclusion that the best overall coverage is obtained at frequencies approximating 1000 KHz. This report presents all the raw data and the reduced data in the form of magnetic field strength contour maps. Sufficient information is provided to enable independent reduction of the data. A summary of observations which can be made directly from the contour maps is given.

The deformation of' impure beryllium crystals by basal glide at room temperature invariably tevminates by basal cleavage after a few percent strain. It is generally accepted that .fracture of this type is caused by the splitting of low) -angle boundaries, or bend planes, by obstacles that restrict the motion of the bed planes in the deforming crystal. The details of such a process have been developed by Stroh, who showed that the high tensile stress norrnal to the basal plane in the region where the bend plane is split results in the propagation of a basal cleavage crack, provided there is no available dejorvrlatzon mode having a shear component normal to the basal plane It has been postulated that puvification of beryllium might lead to increased basal ductility by the vemoval of barviers to bend plane motion and possibly by the activation of nonbasal defor~rlation systems. Large increases in the amount of basal glide that can he sustained prior to fracture have been observed in crystals purified by zone refining. In each case, eventudal fracture was by sharp basal cleavage, suggesting that the split bend plane model still applies to tile fracture of beryllium of rensonably high purity. In the present work, calculations are made to show to what extent basal duetilits can be increased by purification while the split bend plane .fracture process remains applicable. Experimentally observed ductilities are generally somewhat lower than those predicted by calculation because of premature failure due to defects introd~cced during specimen preparation and testing. SEVERAL investigators1-4 have studied the deformation characteristics of beryllium single crystals of commercial purity, and have related the strong anisotropy of plastic deformation in single crystals to the problem of brittleness in polycrystalline beryllium. For most orientations, the principal deformation mode is basal slip, which, at temperatures between 300" and 900°K, begins at a critical resolved shear stress of approximately 1500 g per sq mm and terminates after 3 to 6 pet glide strain by cleavage on the basal plane in the neighborhood of (1120) bend planes that are formed during the deformation. This type of fracture, which is also observed in zinc at low temperatures, has been interpreted by stroh5 to be caused by the splitting of bend planes by obstacles to their motion. In the Stroh model, a (11.20) dislocation wall, or bend plane, moving along the slip direction under the action of the applied stress, encounters obstacles which cause part of the bend plane to be held up, the other part continuing to move. Stress concentrations are built up in the region where the bend plane is split, with a high tensile component normal to the basal plane, resulting in a microcrack at the end of the split wall. Because no deformation mode having a shear component at an angle to the basal plane is available to relieve the stress at the crack tip, the crack can propagate under a sufficiently high applied stress. Engineers and researchers need to estimate the mechanical properties of rocks from P-wave velocity. In previous studies, the researchers have investigated either the limited values or all the data belonging to sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks together in the same statistical analysis. In this study, the raw data pertaining to only sedimentary rocks was taken from previous studies and evaluated. For this purpose, a total of 97 samples of sedimentary rock types were subjected to statistical analysis. First, the relationships between P-wave velocity and physical-mechanical properties were investigated by simple regression analysis. All the data were then subjected to multi-regression analysis. Some empirical equations with high correlation coefficients were derived for rock engineers. The equations obtained from the analyses are compared with previous equations found in literature.

This report covers the area producing from limes and sands of Pennsylvanian age, roughly embracing the territory between the Red River on the north and the Llano Mountains on the south, and between Fort Worth on the east and Abilene on the west. It includes Archer, Cooke, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, Clay, Baylor and Foard counties in the North Central Texas or Red River Basin area, and Brown, Callahan Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, Erath, Palo Pinto, Stephens, Shackel-ford, Throckmorton, Young and Jack counties in the West Central Texas area. Furthermore, it includes a brief review of development in Jones, Runnels, Haskell and Fisher counties. North Central and West Central Texas during the year 1928 produced an approximate total of 50,948,7461 bbl. or oil. This represents a decrease of approximately 7,720,250 bbl. under 1927 total production. This decrease was due to a slump in production in Brown, Archer, Wichita, Stephens and Cooke counties. Brown County showed the greatest decrease. The 1928 prodction in this county was approximately 4,500,000 bbl. less than the 1927 production. Gross production during 1929 in the North and West Central Texas area can be expected to be lower than in the year 1928. Only one county showed a considerable increase in production. Wilbarger County production increased approximately 3,000,000 bbl. during 1928. Its daily average increased from 9000 bbl. in April to 36,000 bbl. in August. At the close of 1928 it was averaging close to 32,000 bbl. daily. Drilling activity in North and West Central Texas during 1928 showed but a slight increase in completions. The total number of completions during 1928 was 3902, of which 2094 (53 per cent.) were producers, as compared to 3805 completions and 2112 (56 per cent.) producers during 1927. Brown, Young, Wichita, Archer and Wilbarger counties were the leaders in development. The outstanding discoveries for the districts were the Consolidated pool, extensions in the Greyback pool of Wilbarger County, and the Stephens pool, Fisher County.

"A 1/3 scale ""thin-slice"" model of an electric arc furnace was developed so that gas could be injected to simulate foaming gas evolution. The influence of arc jets, oxygen lancing and bottom bubbling was also simulated. Liquid velocities were measured by a white light particle image velocimetry system. Numerical simulations of some of these effects were made using commercial CFD packages. Comparisons with measured results show that considerable care is required to select the appropriate model and to interpret the computational results.INTRODUCTIONDuring recent years electric arc furnaces (EAF) have captured a significant share of steel production, partially due to increased productivity through the introduction of advanced technology such as oxygen injection, slag foaming and long-arc operation, process automation and post-combustion. However, systematic analysis of the process and these effects on heat transfer and fluid flow in the furnace is still in its infancy. Most investigationsl1 6l have been restricted to a specific application such as oxygen lancing or bottom stirring. In addition, it is very difficult to make comparisons between these computed results and experimental/industrial results. In this work a 1/3-scale ""thin-slice"" model of Dofasco's 190 ton EAF was built. The fluid flow in the bath due to the arc jets, bottom stirring, oxygen lancing and CO evolution was simulated. The velocity distributions in the bath were measured using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) System. In addition, numerical simulations of bottom stirring and CO evolution were carried out using two commercial CFD packages (Fluent and Phoenics). The objective of this work is to validate the mathematical models so that they can be applied to the full-scale furnaces."
