Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993. The applications of artificial intelligence systems in the upstream petroleum industry are reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on current and potential applications in drilling engineering. Several recent advances in drilling technology have led to a large increase in the quality and volume of data available. This combined with the escalating cost, particularly of off-shore operations, is testing the traditional reliance on the skill and judgement of rig operators. AI systems offer enormous scope in enhancing and aiding the performance of these operations

The effect of composition on electrical conductivity (resistivity), viscosity and liquidus temperature of the slags encountered in electric smelting of PGM-containing suphide concentrates is reviewed along with the relationsip between slag composition, slag-matte separation and metal losses to slag. Optimization of slag composition at furnace temperature is attempted on the basis of opposite and parabolic trends of the viscosity-conductivity relationships of the slags. The importance of surface tension of slags is emphasized using available and estimated information, which are grouped into a useful correlation. These values are coupled with or incorporated into slag viscosity plots to illustrate the correlation between the two factors which influence slag-matte separation as well as refractory attack. The electrode in the slag-resistance furnace is the central factor in the design and operation of the furnace by its role of conveying the smelting power. The obvious parameters are the size and positioning in the slag bath, which are defined by slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distribution and furnace dimensions creating viscosity profiles, which in turn affect flow conditions. Thus the flow of slag and matte isdiscussed in conjunction with the furnace geometry, stirring action of the electrodes, buoyancy and electromagnetic effects. The action of the electric furnace as a settler is discussed. The rectangular furnace is considered as a channel reactor in this analysis and the action of the electrodes is described to indicate a balanced settling rate in the area of electrode action. Discussion of the design and production capacity of the electric furnace with reference to operating current, power input, furnace dimensions and electrode size are based on considerations derived mainly from slag properties such as its resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature.

Cana, originally called Santa Cruz de Cana, is situated in the province of Darien, in the Republic of Colombia, S. A. The river Cana is a tributary of the Tuyra, which flows into the Gulf of San Miguel, and thence into the Pacific Ocean some 80 rniles S.E. of the City of Panama. • The Espiritu Santo mine lies on the S. side of the Cana river at the foot of the Espiritu Santo range. The plateau of Cana has an elevation of 2000 feet above sea-level, and the mine is about 200 feet above the plateau. The map of the Darien accompanying this paper is the only correct one in existence. It was made by Lucien N. Bonaparte Wyse for the Panama Canal Co., and has been copied fur the present use, with permission, by Mr. L. G. Inglis. The dotted line on this map shows the route from the coast to Cana. As this mine was one of the most celebrated at the time of the Spanish occupation, it is only natural that there are a great many traditions and writings concerning its former workers and production. Dampier mentions it, though he does not seem to have been nearer to it than El Real de Santa Maria, the port on the Rio Tuyra, about 50 miles by road from Cana. Senor Vicente Restrepo's work, entitled Estudio sobre las Minas de Oro y Plata de Colombia, translated by C. TV. Fisher and published in New York in 1886, is, perhaps, the best treatise on Colombian mines. He has devoted a great deal of attention to the subject of the Espiritu Santo mine, and has had access to all that dealt with it in the archives of Bogota. It will be interesting to quote a few pasaages from the above work, which seemed like a romance to the writer of this paper some years ago, when he first came across the history. THE various phases of the Mexican oil industry have received so much publicity that there is little to add to the discussion of present and future production, extent and importance of prospective fields, and status of petroleum legislation, to mention but a few of the angles of the Mexican oil problem. However, out of this wealth of information, which is generally of contradictory nature, the average petroleum man is at a loss to know something definite regarding the various questions involved so, keeping the foregoing in mind, it has been the writer's aim to record in a concise form the most reliable and up-to-date information regarding the salient features of the Mexican oil situation. PRESENT STATUS OF MEXICAN OIL INDUSTRY Production During 1921 The Mexican oil fields, during 1921, produced in round numbers 203,000,000 bbl. of which 176,000,000 bbl., or 86 per cent., were exported, the bulk of -these exports, or about 73.3 per cent., going to the United States. The Mexican exports were divided by grades as follows: Light crude, 47.0 per cent.; heavy crude, 22.0 per cent.; tops, 3.5 per cent.; fuel oil from light crude, 24.0 per cent. The balance, or 3 1/2 per cent., includes the bunker fuel shipments and the coastwise trade in Mexico, which is not classified as to grades. The figures show that, in importance, the light-oil fields from about 755 per cent. of the Mexican petroleum industry.

Discussion of the paper of Herbert F.. Miller, Jr., presented at the New York meeting, February, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 75, March, 1913, pp. 409 to 413. HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J.:-Looking at the illustrations, it seems to me that a furnace made with the width of port that is shown here would not be a good working furnace. The economy of brick and gas might be all right, but I do not think it would melt the steel properly. I should say that the flame would not spread out suitably to fill the whole hearth of the furnace, and there would be undue waste, and it seems to me that it would be an undesirable furnace to adopt. The question as to whether a producer-gas flame would lie down in the furnace, hugging the bottom better than the natural-gas flame, is settled, not so much by the specific gravity of the gases themselves, as by the relative temperatures at which they enter the laboratory of the furnace. We know in that case that producer gas would be lighter than a natural gas which had not been run through a regenerator and expanded four or five volumes in consequence. I would like to hear what Mr. Miller has to say about the action of the flame spreading properly over the charge to give good metallurgical results in the form of furnace which he presents.

Sulphide minerals, such as pyrite and sphalerite, are leached by ferric sulphate. This reaction produces ferrous sulphate and other dissolved products. The ferrous sulphate is re-oxidized to ferric sulphate by bacteria. These reactions can be written as: [ ] However, in 1964 Silverman and Ehrlich proposed that this is not the only role that is played by bacteria. These researchers proposed that T. ferrooxidans enhances the rate of oxidation of pyrite above that achieved by chemical reaction with ferric sulphate at the same solution conditions. This enhancement in the rate of dissolution was proposed to occur by direct microbiological action, possibly by the extra cellular secretion of an enzymatic oxidant. Since the Silverman and Ehrlich proposal, different authors have made opposing claims concerning the action of T. ferrooxidanson pyrite. This ?direct mechanism? of bacterial dissolution of pyrite can be given by the following reaction: [ ]

Serious illness of my father has made it necessary for me to remain in Salt Lake Please arrange substitute. Very sorry." In addition to having to pinch-hit for Mr. Marchant and President Nyman, I am here representing the Governor of the State of Colorado also who is unable to be here. The Governor of Colorado is a very busy man. His appointments are made months ahead. We only got word of the possibility of his addressing this meeting yesterday morning, and I went over to the Governor's office this morning to see if there was any possibility of getting him here, but he had been booked up for two months ahead of this time to appear at the convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Trinidad, Colorado, where he is today, and which makes it impossible for him to attend this meeting. I know that he would have liked to have been here with you, as there is not any doubt but what the Governor of Colorado has the interests of the mining industry at heart. This was manifested last week when he called a meeting of representative men of the different lines of industry so that we could arrive at some results and some arrangements to see if it was possible to get at the bottom of the condition causing our bad times, and the appointment of commit- tee groups to find out what these problems were and to see if they could get any possible solution to them. The meeting was adjourned with the suggestion that those who were present would among themselves select such committees to investigate the conditions of the coal mining industry, and offer suggestions for betterment.

It is of great importance to prevent a leakage of hazardous substances from underground storage plants, because this certainly leads to a fatal disaster for human societies. Therefore, effective grouting system needs to be developed, which can inject cement grout into low-permeable rock masses. Authors have carried out a series of laboratory injection tests using a fracture model and field tests in low-permeable rock masses. In these tests, not only was the superiority of dynamic grouting confirmed, but also the relationship between grouting-efficiency and injection parameters was investigated. In this paper, the results of laboratory injection tests and field tests together with theoretical approaches to them are mentioned. L’empêchement de la fuite des substances dangereuses des galeries de stockage est un traitement très important pour protéger la société humaine contre la comtamination catastrophique. Par conséquent, un procédé d’injection efficace doit être mis au point, qui peut injecter du coulis de ciment dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Les auteurs ont effectué une série d'essais d'injection en laboratoire en utilisant un modèle de rupture et d'essais sur le terrain dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Dans ces essais, était non seulement la supériorité du l’injection dynamique confirmée, mais aussi le rapport entre l’efficacité de l’injection et les paramètres d'injection a été étudié. Dans cet article, les résultats des essais d'injection en laboratoire et des essais sur le terrain ainsi que les méthodes théoriques pour les essais sont mentionnés. Es ist wichtig, Durchsickerns gefährlicher Substanzen aus unterirdischen Lagerstellen zu verhindern, weil dies für die menschliche Gesellschaft unter Umständen zu verheerenden Unfällen führen kann. Daher muß ein effizientes VerfugesSystem entwickelt werden, welches erlaubt den Mörtelschlamm in wenig durchlässige Felsenmassen einzuspritzen. Die Autoren haben eine Serie von Laboreinspritzungsversuchen mit einem Bruchmodell und Feldversuche an wenig durchlässigen Felsenmassen durchgeführt. Diese Versuche zeigten nicht nur die Überlegenheit des dynamischen Verfugens, sondern wurde dabei auch das Verhältnis zwischen Verfugen und Leistungsfähigkeit sowie den Einspritzungparametern untersucht. In dieser Studie werden die Ergebnisse der Laboreinspritzungtests und die Feldversuche zusammen mit den entsprechenden theoretischen Ansätzen erläutert.

In the interest of safety in mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That cages or skips used for hoisting or lowering men in vertical and steeply inclined shafts shall be provided with safety catches designed to prevent falling of the cage or skip if the hoisting rope or other connections break; and 2. That cars used. for hoisting or lowering men with ropes in slopes shall be provided with arresting devices, other than ordinary brakes, that come into action if the hoisting rope or other connections break. In presenting this decision, it is recognized that the principal requirements for safety in hoisting operations are the use of hoisting ropes of ample size and strength to provide a factor of safety recognized as adequate by the best en engineering practice; their proper care, protection against undue wear and corrosion, and frequent inspection; and immediate removal of ropes from service when inspection or tests cast doubt upon their further safe serviceability.

Although water quality predictions are often made in Environmental Impact Statements (EIS's) as part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), comparisons between predicted and actual water quality conditions are rarely reviewed. A comprehensive review of predicted and actual water quality conditions was conducted for a number of large U.S. hardrock mines with EIS’s. For mines with large differences between predicted and actual conditions, factors responsible for the deviations, such as characterization and modeling errors or engineering failures, were identified. Recommendations are made for how the NEPA process could be modified to better predict water quality at hardrock mine sites.

WHILE pure magnesium does not corrode rapidly the presence of even very small quantities of certain other metals accelerates corrosion remarkably. Because magnesium is such an electropositive metal (E° = +2.34 volts)' the presence of substances that permit galvanic activity is extremely undesirable. It is stated that as little as 0.017 pct of iron in magnesium causes a marked increase in the corrosion rate.2 Magnesium and its alloys are commonly melted in iron or steel pots; consequently the commercial metal has the opportunity to pick up iron if it has that tendency. Quantitative data on the solubility of iron in magnesium are of practical as well as of academic interest. Some magnesium alloy castings tend to have large grain size unless suitable treatment is given to the liquid metal just prior to casting. One method of grain refinement consists of "superheating" the metal just prior to casting. "Superheating" is heating to a temperature 100 to 200°C above the casting temperature and holding for a short period of time. Superheated metal has a much finer grain than unsuperheated metal. A satisfactory explanation of this phenomenon has not been forthcoming. One hypothesis attributes the grain refinement in the superheated metal to precipitation of some phase that is miscible at the temperature of superheat but not miscible just below the casting temperature and which is thought to provide nucleating centers for crystallization. This phase, if the foregoing hypothesis is correct, would probably be a metal or an intermetallic compound. Of the metals likely to be found in magnesium alloys, iron is one of the most likely candidates for the role of grain refiner for iron occurs in small quantities in all commercial magnesium and magnesium alloys. A. Beck' states that magnesium, in either the liquid or the solid state, cannot dissolve iron and that iron exists as a finely divided suspension which does not settle out because of its extreme fineness. Beck also presents a micrograph showing a large iron dendrite in magnesium but does not comment on the crystallization of iron from a solution supposed to contain none. It is doubtful that dendrite formation from suspended iron would be possible. This suspension theory is the basis of patents4 covering the removal of iron from magnesium by allowing the iron particles to act as nuclei for the formation of primary magnesium crystals which can be separated by segregation. Also covered by patents is the removal of iron by the addition of another metal to form an intermetallic compound with the iron which, because of its increased particle size, is able to settle out of the molten metal. Here, too, quantitative information on the extent of iron solubility in liquid magnesium is of more than theoretical interest. M. Hansen,5 in his critical collection of the data on binary alloys, states that iron is not soluble in liquid magnesium. W. R. D. The efficient and accurate design of pipe and pumping plant for non-Newtonian mineral slurries remains a problem. The objective of this paper is to present the development of the Balanced Beam Tube Viscometer (BBTV), an instrument which could facilitate more accurate design for these slurries. The background of rotational and tube viscometry is reviewed and the fundamental principles and inherent advantages of the BBTV are given. The design, data acquisition and processing techniques are introduced and results showing the reliability of the new instrument are presented and discussed. It is concluded that the BBTV is a reliable and versatile instrument for both routine analyses and research work, and has the potential to provide data for the refinement of the design procedure for mineral slurry pipe and plant design.

La actividad sísmica del Perú se origina en el proceso de convergencia de la Placa de Nazca bajo la Sudamericana, donde la geometría de la placa oceánica presenta dos tipos de segmentos, una que subduce con un ángulo de 30º hacia el este y la otra, de bajo ángulo o subducción plana. En esta perspectiva, el presente texto describe la estructura y cinemática de la Falla Purgatorio Mirave (FPM) ubicada en la vertiente pacífica de la Cordillera Occidental del sur del Perú, entre la ciudad de Tacna y Moquegua. Dicha falla tiene una longitud aproximada de 40 km al nivel, donde la placa oceánica subduce con un ángulo de 30º al este y el vector de convergencia es oblicuo en relación a la zona de contacto de las placas. Asimismo, la geometría de la costa afecta también la distribución de la deformación y la morfología resultante. La geometría, morfoestructura y cinemática de la estructura se puede dividir en tres segmentos: el segmento Este presenta una traza de falla rectilínea, morfoestructura bien conservada y el último movimiento de tipo inverso, el segmento central de traza rectilínea y escarpe de falla bien conservado, donde se observa el mayor desnivel de la FPM (3.5 m) y que afecta los depósitos cuaternarios, según las medidas de estrías en el plano de falla nos indica que el ultimo movimiento fue de tipo dextral. Finalmente, el segmento oeste presenta su parte más oriental una traza rectilínea para luego hacerse curvilínea y formar una geometría de tipo cola de caballo o echelón hacia su parte occidental, este segmento muestra evidencias deque su último movimiento es de tipo inverso, formando pliegues de propagación de falla que afectan depósitos cuaternarios.

"INTRODUCTION During the summer of 1945, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and program of churn drilling near the village of Tennyson in Grant County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the war program.The area for special investigation was selected on the basis of favorable structural disclosures, evidence of widespread zinc mineralization, absence of any great amount of exploration to depth beneath the productive shallow workings, and the favorable results of several churn-drill holes in the village of Tennyson.During the Bureau's investigation, 30 churn-drill holes aggregating5,888 feet were completed.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to-the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. THE Juneau gold belt is divided into ore-bands of poor definition. The most easterly workings on the , belt, those of the Alaska Gastineau Co., disclosed three separate bands: the Footwall or Ground-hog band, 70 ft. wide; the Perseverance band on which the recent mining was done, also 70 ft. wide; and the No. 2 band, 100 ft. wide. These bands, aggregating 240 ft., are found over a width of 2000 ft. Going toward the west into the adjoining Alaska Juneau ground, four bands have been found which have a total 'right-angle thickness of 755 ft. These bands are convergent in their westerly trend and terminate on the plane of Silver Bow fault. The four bands have better definition at the fault plane than at the eastern boundary line where they enter the property. -Along the property line, the width of the bands and intervening country is 1600 ft., and at the Silver Bow fault this width is reduced to 1300 ft. The distance from the eastern property line to Silver Bow fault is 2400 ft. The bands are slate or slate with metagabbro intrusions, together with gold-bearing quartz masses, stringers, and gash veins. The bands themselves are not all ore, but all commercial .ore is found within the bands. They have no uniform width either in horizontal or vertical section. A well can flow exclusively through the casing or exclusively through a tubing but can also flow partly through a casing and at the top part through a tubing. The main principles of the flowing of wells under these conditions were explained in the author's former paper.' Practically all factors that influence the regular flow are dealt with therein. The question of irregular flow, however, will be discussed briefly here. As a rule, an irregular flow must be avoided, as it may be assumed that the efficiency is thereby very small, while on many fields it is injurious to the sand of the oil-bearing layer. Periodical flowing often occurs with rising mixtures of gas and liquid. The phenomenon can be explained if it is accepted that two conditions are possible in the mixture; namely, the foam condition and the mist condition. If there is no stabilizer in the liquid, the foam condition can exist only when the liquid forms a greater portion of the volume than the gas. The mist condition, on the other hand, can exist only when the liquid occupies a smaller part of the volume than the gas. The foam condition occurs when there are gas bubbles in the liquid mass, while in the mist condition drops of liquid are disseminated in a gas-filled space. For sake of simplicity, it has been assumed that the mist condition prevails when 50 per cent. or more of the volume is occupied by gas, while with less than 50 per cent. gas the foam condition will arise. For distilled water and for oils which do not tend to form stable foams this is probably approximately true. If this does not hold good, however, two cases are possible: (1) The fields of the two conditions overlap or (2) they do not meet. If the fields of the conditions overlap there is an intermediate field where either of the two conditions can exist, depending on the history of the mixture. The research presented in this paper investigated the practical aspects of the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were conducted on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of Pt, Pd, and Au were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours, and 100 per cent for Pt, 97.4 per cent for Pd, and 99.9 per cent for Au after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while Ni concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, Ni adsorbs at approximately the same rate as the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. The equilibrium loading of gold is exothermic in nature (Fleming and Nicol, 1984) which will result in an increase in gold elution kinetics with an increase in temperature at similar pre-treatment conditions. A similar result was found for the elution of Pt and Pd. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and results suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing due to increased ionic strength.
