SYNOPSIS The corrosion characteristics of a new steel, 14Cr, which is a modification of the well-known 3CR12, in aqueous sulphate solution were studied through polarization diagrams and a computer analysis based on the polarization¬resistance technique. It was found that the corrosion rate of 14Cr steel is independent of pH for pH values above 6, but, below a pH value of 4, the corrosion rate increases sharply with decreasing pH. In air-saturated solutions of neutral and mildly alkaline pH, the corrosion rate is approximately 60 µm per year. The 14Cr steel shows a twentyfold improvement in corrosion resistance over that of 3CR12 in sulphate solutions at pH 2,0. This is considered to be due to the beneficial effect of its higher chromium and nickel contents.

The most important operation in the tunnel blasting procedure is to create an opening in the face in order to develop more free surface in the rock mass. This operation is highly dependent on the cut holes. In general, the burn-cut or V-cut is commonly adopted to blast the cut section. But, these traditional methods often raise problems. There are instances (a) that the actual advance is considerably less than the designed advance depending on the rock mass, (b) that they cannot sometimes enlarge the free surface efficiently and (c) that the blast vibration resulted from the cut blast exceeds the allowable vibration level. In order to resolve the problems, many different kinds of the cut blast can be considered.

The indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in the past has created a serious fire hazard in the bush of the northern New South Wales coalfields. Spontaneous or bushfire-induced combustion in large neglected dumps of this material has increased in recent years causing a rise in air pollution. Surface methods of coal waste disposal are still being practised, and in many cases new material is being added to old dumps, many of which are burning. CSI RO has conducted research on methods of preventing and controlling fires in coal waste and recommends practical methods of overcoming these problems. Some laboratory and on-site investigations are described and the hazards of improperly constructed dumps are considered. The available techniques of fire prevention and control are discussed in relation to Australian conditions. Proposals for the safe and economical disposal of coal waste are outlined.

Numerical modelling was used to examine damage in wall control operations. Decoupled charges appear to create larger damage zones than fully coupled low density charges with similar charge distributions: Air was shown to be a very efficient coupling medium, while water coupling resulted in significant damage. However, Mach stems are formed when air is used as a decoupling medium, leading to compression of the charge ahead of the detonation wave. Air decked charges generate two damage zones, one close to the charge and another close to the air-deck/stemming interface, where pressure pulses are reflected. The extent of the latter depends on the length of the air-deck.

Since production curtailment for other than engineering reasons is gradually disappearing, and more and more wells are now producing at capacity and showing declining production rates, it was considered timely to present a brief review of the development of decline-curve analysis during the past three or four decades. Several of the commoner types of decline curves were discussed in detail and the mathematical relationships between production rate, time, cumulative production and decline percentage for each case were studied. The well-known loss-ratio method was found to be an extremely valuable tool for statistical analysis and extrapolation of various types of curves. A tentative classification of decline curves, based on their loss ratios, was suggested. Some new graphical methods were introduced to facilitate estimation of the future life and the future production of producing properties where curves are plotted on semilogarithmic paper. To facilitate graphical extrapolation of hyperbolic-type decline curves, a series of decline charts was proposed, which will make straight-line extrapolation of both rate-time and rate-cumulative curves possible. Introduction During the period of severe production curtailment, which is now behind us, production-decline curves lost most of their usefulness and popularity in prorated areas because the production rates of all wells, except those in the stripper class, were constant or almost constant. While production-decline curves were thus losing in importance for estimating reserves, an increasing reservoir consciousness and a better understanding of reservoir performance developed among petroleum engineers. This fact, together with intelligent interpretation and use of electric logs, core-analysis data, bottom-hole pressure behavior and physical characteristics of reservoir fluids, eliminated a considerable part of the guesswork in previous volumetric methods and put reserve estimates, based on this method, on a sound scientific basis' At the same time, a number of ingenious substitutes were developed for the regular production-decline curve, which made it possible to obtain an independent check on volumetric estimates in appraisal work, even though the production rates were constant. with the now steadily increasing demand for oil to supply the huge requirements of this global war, proration for reasons of than prevention of underground waste is gradually disappearing. More and more wells are, or will be, producing at capacity or at their optimum rates, as determined by sound engineering practice. With this trend, the character of producing wells seems to regain, more or less, its "individuality," and the old and familiar decline curve appears to have had a comeback as a valuable tool in the hands of the petroleum engineer. It may be timely, therefore, to retrace the development of decline-curve analysis in the past by presenting a brief chronological review of bulletins and papers published during the past three or four decades, which have

In 1999, the Mineral Development Centre of CVRD (CDM) acquired a flotation device referred to as Mini Pilot Plant (MPP), which is able to run continuous flotation tests with drill core samples. Since then this equipment has been used to define the flotation circuit and process conditions during the pre-feasibility phase of CVRDÆs copper sulfide projects. Until now, the MPP results had not been validated for an industrial flotation operation. The present work consists of a comparison and correlation of the results from a flotation MPP and an industrial plant. In order to make this comparison, an industrial plant was completely sampled and the feed ore was tested on bench scale and on a MPP. The metallurgical and mass balances of each test were used for the comparison.

Alunite [KA13(S04)2(OH)6] is a promising non-bauxitic aluminum resource, the domestic reserves of which are estimated to be 800 x 106 tons at 35 percent alunite. The major gangue mineral associated with alunite is quartz. The thermochemical process that has been developed for treatment of this ore does not provide for the initial removal of gangue prior to processing. In this regard, it may be desirable to concentrate the ore to gain significant technical and economic advantages. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness of an oleic acid flotation technique and exemplify the problems encountered in fine particles processing. These results show that the quality of separation studied as a function of temperature, collector addition, and depressant addition is dependent on the degree of liberation achieved during size reduction. At coarse grinds the quality of separation was limited by the presence of locked particles while for finer grinds where more extensive liberation is achieved, better separations were obtained. The degree of liberation for each size interval was determined by an SEM/energy dispersive x-ray technique and found to be independent of the extent of size reduction, suggesting that liberation occurs by indiscriminate fracture and not by detachment. Up to 89 percent liberation was realized for a minus 400 mesh grind. Under these circumstances, the quality of separation appears not only to be limited by the remaining locked particles, but, also, by contamination of the alunite concentrate with fine quartz gangue (< 2µm). The best separation for the minus 400 mesh grind was a rougher recovery of 88 percent with a grade of 65% alunite at 50°C.

Mexican silver mining operations have existed prior to the sixteenth century. Recovery processes throughout the centuries were developed at the many mining localities and have progressed through smelting, the patio amalgamation process to cyanidation and flotation. A study of the present silver mining zones is reported in which the ores are evaluated in terms of the mineralogical constituents, their state in the matrix and the effects these are noted to impose upon the efficiency of recovery. Silver mineral identifications were by quantitative ore microscopic and scanning electron microscopic energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

Tailings facilities tell a story to the public about how the mining industry manages its activities. They also create a risk that must be managed for the long term. All the knowledge and technology is available to safely design, build, operate and decommission tailings facilities. &nbsp; Tailings at Waikato North Head Minesite are pumped as slurry, over long distances and against high static discharge heads to backfill the excavated area. WNH is, under the mining licence, obliged to reconcile the topography of mined areas to the closest possible resemblance of the original terrain. The active tailings areas are located near main operational facilities and detailed plans and procedures have been developed to ensure a safe and continuous operation. &nbsp; The concentration plant is designed as two identical and independent plants. Each plant has its own tailings slurry pumping system. &nbsp; This paper represents a general overview of the tailings disposal practice at WNH mine site. It discusses tailings delivery, construction and water management.

Technology has no recognized rank in what is called polite literature; the subject-matter of engineering is not supposed to lend itself to artistic treatment; we are the hewers of wood and drawers of water to the high-priests of learning that live on the cold summit above our humbler dwellings. Therefore the hierophants smile at the notion of &apos;style&apos;- “that curiously personal thing”--in technical writing. The "great art" of Pater, the "inevitable phrase" of Raleigh, the "note of distinction" that Arnold demanded are said to be beyond the scope, as they are supposed to be beside the need, of a writer on geology or engineering. This is a narrow view. Science, no less than belles lettres, calls for the best exercise of the human intelligence; the art of writing should be employed as skilfully and as earnestly in a description of the structure of the Sierra Nevada, or of the construction of a tunnel through the range, as in a rhapsody welcoming the rosy fingers of the dawn. The idea still lingers that fine writing does not befit technology, even though the masters of the Victorian period- Huxley, Tyndall, Ruskin-proved that science is worthy to be arrayed in the best robes that the looms of thought can weave. At the beginning of these lectures I quoted Barrie&apos;s remark touching the inability of the scientific man to express himself. That imputation has been passed to the technologist, whose utilitarian pursuits are supposed to make him too clumsy for the refinements of human speech. We may not have acquired the self-consciousness of those writers on Art whose "power of expression is so cultivated that their sensual caterwauling may be almost mistaken for the music of the spheres"; nor can we imitate the politicians, who have the ability to speak far beyond anything that they may have to say; but we too have a litera-

The flotation of coal in the fie and coarse particle size ranges presents particular problems. Fine or ultra-fine coal less than 100 microns presents a challenge to conventional flotation machines because the rate of capture of the coal particles can be very low, so longer residence times are needed. Also, conventional mechanical cells are not normally designed with froth properties in mind. Froth drainage may be inadequate, leading to excessive entrainment of ash. The upper limit of flotation of coal is normally put at about 500 um (30 mesh). It appears that, in mechanical cells, coarser particles tend to be torn away from bubbles in the turbulent environment created by the impeller. In this paper, results are presented from plant trials of a high-intensity flotation column of novel design, namely the Jameson cell. Extensive trials have been conducted on coal slurries with a top size of around 1 mm. Size-by size analysis shows that it is possible to achieve high yields of low ash product over the whole particle size range.

The Bureau of Mines has researched the utilization of mining and pro-cessing wastes as raw materials for the production of glass-ceramic pipe. Characterization of various wastes as to occurrence and chemical composition is reported. A computer program was developed and used to identify waste materials and mixes that would result in glass melts from which glass-ceramics could be produced after cooling and subsequent heat treatments. The production of abrasion-resistant pipe from inexpensive and readily available domestic resources could offer an economical substitute for high-alloy steels containing the critical and strategic materials cobalt and chromium.

St BarbaraÆs Marvel Loch operations have successfully used longhole open stoping as the primary mining method for a number of years. A transition to Core and Shell mining was implemented in 2009 to recover substantial ore grade resources remaining in sill and rib pillars. The transition to core and shell for the Exhibition lode required continuous waste filling of created voids and thus the removal of the crown pillar at the base of the Exhibition pit by blasting. Access to the top of pillar was denied as the pit was partially rock filled with waste rock from underground development.Beyond the technical challenges of the blasting project, a simple and transparent risk management process was developed to ensure appropriate controls and mitigating strategies were in place to minimise risk to personnel during the pillar removal process.Although failure of the crown pillar was anticipated but with the actual timing unknown, on 25 December 2011 the crown pillar yielded during normal mine operations. Engineered and isolation controls in place at the time were of a sufficiently high standard to ensure limited exposure of the underground workforce and minimal damage to mine infrastructure. Successful risk management through implementation of appropriate controls during the project lifecycle of two years and three months proved to be fundamental to the safe removal of the crown pillar.CITATION:Barrie, S C, 2012. The efficient separation of metal species from aqueous streams by precipitation techniques requires &apos;a fundamental understanding of the various processes that occur during precipitation. These processes include particle nucleation, particle growth by solute deposition, agglomerate formation, and agglomerate break-up. The application of the population balance approach has been used to develop a kinetic model that accounts for these competing kinetic processes. The usefulness of the model is illustrated through its application to the precipitation of yttrium hydroxynitrate, YHN. The kinetic parameters calculated from the model equations and system-specific solution chemistry are used to describe several aspects of the effect of pH on the precipitation of the YHN. Implications with respect to the simultaneous precipitation of more than one cation type are also discussed through use of example systems: The effects of solution chemistry, precipitator design, and solvent choice are considered.

The recovery process of valuable metals, such as Ll, Mn, Ni and Cr from a waste lithium battery was developed n this study. Lithium and Mn are selectively leached from the battery by using dilute mineral acid. Main part of the battery comprises stainless steel, and Fe, Ni and Cr are easily leached by the mixture of dilute HCl and HNO3 Lithium and Mn are precipitated as metal carbonates from the? individual leached solution with sodium carbonate solution. The solution containing Fe,Ni and Cr Is treated by solvent extraction to separate NI and Cr from the leached solution. The experiments are carried out for leaching and separation steps. According to the experimental results, the flow. sheet for a recovery process of valuable metals from a waste lithium battery has been established.

Trackless mining at LKAB, Sweden by L HERMANSSON (Visitor) Because the usual means of transporting men and material to the working sites was time-wasting and uneconomical, inclined subways were installed in the Kiirunavaara Mine that permitted the access of rubber-wheeled vehicles to all underground working sites. Men and material could now be transported direct to the working site with no reloading. An increase of 8 to 12 per cent in underground productivity has been obtained by the use of this new transportation system. Rubber-wheeled vehicles are also used in development, production drilling, and loading. In December 1958, the management of the Luossavaara Mine decided to cut the costs of waste-rock haulage. The system of waste transport was the conventional one of shuttle car, rail haulage, and skip hoisting. After consideration of other methods, it was decided to re-equip the mine completely for a system of trackless transport. Results show that mining costs per ton of ore were reduced by 27 per cent, and mining costs per ton of waste were reduced by a spectacular 80 per cent. The new system has proved to be more flexible, and ore grading has been simplified since there is no longer any mixing in ore passes and chutes.

Gulf Research & Development Company conducted the nation&apos;s first underground coal gasification test in steeply dipping beds near Rawlins, Wyoming. The geotechnical considerations played a major role in the initial site selection. The test plan included a detailed geotechnical program for site evaluation, test design, permitting, and environmental studies before the burn. During burn, the geotechnical activity continued in the form of monitoring surface subsidence and acoustic emission. The postburn evaluation included studies of the drill cores obtained from the burn zone and effects on the surrounding rock mass.

A total of 209 cases of subsidence data over longwall panels in 16 US coal seems have been collected and built into a subsidence database. The database is developed under MS Windows environment. It uses a very user-friendly menu driven system. The empirical formulae for a number of commonly used subsidence parameters have been derived from those collected subsidence data.

In this paper, a methodology for the reliability assessment of geogrid-reinforced unpaved roadways is presented, by taking into account the variability of the subgrade?s undrained shear strength. Analyses are performed using the Point Estimate Method and the Monte Carlo simulations technique. The undrained shear strength is represented by its correlation with the California Bearing Ratio and it is modeled as a random variable following a long-normal distribution. Analyses are performed for different types of reinforcement. The study provides a quantitative assessment of the variation of the system?s probability of failure with this parameter. Overall, the approach suggested in this study may be considered as a complementary approach on the traditional concepts of global or partial safety factors.

INTRODUCTION Although the oil industry has been aware of the directional variability of permeability in porous rock, the directional variability of relative permeability has been largely ignored. Yet it is apparent that such an effect must be present in a system in which the distribution of oil and gas within the porous matrix is controlled by capillary forces. It is easy to visualize a rock composed of layers of fine and coarse material such that gas flow across the bedding planes would take place only after the average oil saturation had been reduced to a very low value. The fine layers, because of their greater capillarity, would remain saturated and act as barriers to the flow of gas after the coarse layers had been desaturated. Flow of gas parallel to the bedding planes would obviously take place at a much greater liquid saturation. Without more complete information concerning the geology of a reservoir than is generally available, it is not possible to predict exactly how such phenomena would affect the over-all performance of an oil field. It is possible, however, to predict qualitatively the effect of stratification on relative permeability measurements made on laboratory cores. In this investigation the effect of stratification was studied analytically by assuming that two porous materials with different capillary pressure-desaturation curves (but identical relative permeability curves) were in contact and in capillary equilibrium. As a qualitative check on the analytical results, cores having various degrees of visible stratification were used for relative permeability measurements made with fluids flowing both parallel and perpendicular to the bedding planes. A quantitative check was considered impractical because of the difficulty of devising models in which two materials of predetermined properties could be joined without the plane of contact becoming a discontinuity. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS AND ASSUMPTIONS The assumption of capillary equilibrium in an oil-gas system implies that the difference in pressure between oil and gas is everywhere the same. This means that the curvature of the interfaces must be everywhere the same in order to satisfy the equation where PC is the pressure difference between phases, y the interfacial tension and r, and r2 are the major and minor radii of curvature. Depending on the pore size distribution of coarse and fine layers, the volumetric percentages of oil and gas in these layers will differ when equilibrium exists. The exact relationship can only be determined by obtaining the complete capillary pressure-desaturation curves for each of the porous materials in contact. It has been pointed out elsewhere&apos; that the capillary pressure-desaturation curves of sedimentary porous materials can often be approximated by the relation where C is a constant and Soe is the effective saturation to oil based on a percentage of the pore volume effective to flow. In the same paper it was indicated that, as a first approximation, the values of oil relative permeability are given by and the values of gas relative permeability by For this analysis Eqs. 2, 3, and 4 were assumed to apply to each of two components of a hypothetical porous rock in capillary equilibrium. It was also assumed that each of the components had a residual wetting phase saturation of 20 per cent so that 80 per cent of the total pore volume was effective to flow. The permeability of the coarse stratum was taken as 100, and its displacement pressure was such that C in Eq. 2 had the numerical value of 1. The corresponding values for the fine stratum were 10 for the permeability and 10 for C. Units are not specified because they do not enter into the final results. The choice of the permeabilities and displacement pressure ratios was made to expedite the calculations. Any reasonable rock properties could have been chosen without changing the results qualitatively. Several arrangements of the two components were studied. Table 1 summarizes the resultant permeabilities obtained for four types of arrangement. RELATIVE PERMEABILITY CALCULATIONS The first step in the computation of relative permeability for the composite cores was the plotting of the capillary pressure-desaturation curves and the relative permeability curves for the individual components according to Eqs. 2, 3, and 4.
