Ok Tedi mine has become one of the major copper producers in the world. In the process of becoming of age, it overcame the challenges of operating in a locality which is young in geological terms, experiences very high rainfall and has a topography which gives rise to frequent landslides. "Hydrometallurgical processes can be exceptionally corrosive. Conditions associated with metal extraction and refining require materials of construction that can withstand process acids and acid chlorides at temperatures up to 90°C (194°F). Process vessels, piping, scrubbers and ducting can be rapidly compromised in these aggressive environments if not designed with care. Design engineers are challenged to find materials that can stand up to hydrometallurgical processes especially for copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt and uranium. This paper will evaluate material solutions to determine which provides attractive economics for initial procurement as well as high durability for reasonable life cycle costs.INTRODUCTIONMining activity in a number of metal ores has been running quite high over the last few years. In particular, those metals that employ acid functional extraction processes such as copper, nickel cobalt and uranium have been particularly active.The world’s largest nickel mine – the massive $4.76 billion Ambatovy nickel mine on the African island nation of Madagascar is nearing completion. When it reaches its full production capacity in 2013, the mine will produce 60,000 MT/yr of nickel and 5600 MT/yr of cobalt. Coming on the heels of the Ambatovy project is the Long Harbour Processing Plant in Newfoundland, Canada which will process the ore from Vale’s Voisey Bay mine in Labrador. Voisey’s Bay is expected to generate more than 50,000 MT/yr of nickel ore when it starts up in 2013. Next up will be the Boleo project in Mexico on the Baja peninsula. When commissioned in 2013, the $858 Million Boleo project is expected to produce 60,000 MT/yr copper, 3100 MT/yr cobalt, 36,000 MT/yr zinc and 100,000 – 250,000 MT/yr manganese carbonate.High nickel alloys and rubber lined steel have been used for decades to design corrosion resistant equipment for mineral processing environments. These materials demonstrate reasonable resistance to corrosion for most environments. Unfortunately, higher nickel alloys are quite expensive. Rubber lined steel is a bit more affordable but requires continuing service over time which ultimately drives up its cost as well. FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) has also been used extensively in mineral processing for tanks, piping and ducting employed in aggressive environments. Today, more and more design engineers and material specifiers are calling for FRP composites for both new and replacement equipment used in the refining and processing of a variety of metal ores."

Belt conveyors face their applications life with a promise of constant abuse: heavy and rough products cascade onto the belting without let-up; caustic and abrasive materials such as salt and ore eat away at the cover; high temperatures, even open flame at times, sear and soften belting materials; and unyielding tension stretches and strains every belting component. The only defense against the applications onslaught is to follow the basic rules of proper handling, installation, and maintenance. Under the direction of qualified personnel (one responsible person, if possible), you can insure that conveyor belting begins operation in top condition.

Stope backfilling in South African gold mines uses the coarser cyclone fraction of the gold tailings. The disposal of the overflow from the cyclones, which is finer and of higher moisture content than normal gold tailings, presents some problems. This paper describes an investigation undertaken to define the parameters that are required for a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the operation and stability of slimes dams built of such material. However, seeing the investigation was conducted on the slimes from only one mine, it is recommended that, until a wider range of data becomes available, tests should be conducted for each individual mine.

A UTORADIOGRAPHY would appear to be sim-A pler and less time-consuming for diffusion studies than any of the radioactive tracer techniques commonly employed, namely, the sectioning, surface increase, and surface decrease techniques.' Accord- ingly, it was felt worthwhile to investigate the applicability of autoradiography to self-diffusion measurements, and gold was chosen for this purpose. The radioactive isotope Au'!'' was used, as obtained from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Its radiation consists of p (0.97 mev) and y (0.41 mev) rays, and it has a half-life of 2.69 days. No-Screen X-ray film was found suitable for these experiments: the film has the desired high speed for recording P rays and yet is practically insensitive to y rays. First, take a broad look at the role of mining in the Latin American economy; then, review briefly the current situation in four principal metallic mineral exporting nations -- Chile, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela; and. finally, raise some, policy questions that seem to me to be important. The Role Of Latin America In World Mining First, let's consider Latin America's position in world mining markets. Latin America provides more than 5% of world output in 16 metals or ores, ranging from antimony and barite to Tungsten and Zinc. Among the gold-deposits discovered in recent vears none is more extraordinary in richness or interesting in structure than that of the famous mine at Mount Morgan. At a time when but few Australian mines were known to the world outside the colonies, Mount Morgan was quoted as an occurrence, unusual not only in its origin (for it was said to be dye to geyser-action) but also in the purity of its gold. The mine is situated just within the tropics, twenty-six miles southwest of Rockhampton, in central Queensland. Queensland attained in 1889 the first place among the gold-producing colonies of Australasia, a position previously always held by Victoria. In that year Queensland produced 737,822 ounces, while Victoria cape second with 614,838 ounces. Of the four chief mining districts Rockhampton stood first, as the following figures show: Quartz crushed, Yield,. Average per ton, Tons. Ounces. Oz. Dwt. Leaving out Rockhampton, the output of which is practically that of the Mount Morgan mine, it will be noted that the more northerly goldfields show the highest average (Gympie being furthest from and Croydon nearest to the equator). This is largely explained, however, by the increased cost of milling, due chiefly to the want of water for batteries and the consequent economical necessity of selecting high-grade material only for crushing. In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the Mountain Pass Mine in California produced about 40 percent of the world?s rare earth elements. At the height of this production, the facility produced up to 54 L/s (850 gpm) of saltwater that was piped to offshore holding ponds where the water was evaporated. In 1998, following a series of waste water pipeline breaches, separations activities were suspended, reducing the Mountain Pass site to just the openpit mine and mill. The environmental concerns were addressed and the affected areas have since been remediated. However, in the years following the breaches, 97 percent of the world?s production of rare earth elements moved to China. By 2011, Molycorp, and the Mountain Pass Mine, had rebounded from the difficult times and were once again in a position to become a significant player in the rare earth industry.

The temperature dependence of: a) electrolyte density, viscosity and electrical conductivity and b) the equilibrium constants of formation for all relevant species have been determined as part of an effort to model the operation of a copper electrowinning cell based on reactive electrodialysis. The studied ranges were: 1.01 to 1.25 g/cm3 for density, 4.9x10-4 to 16.4x10-4 kg m-1 s-1 for viscosity and 0.02 to 86.0 Sri m-1 for electrical conductivity. Density and the electrical conductivity of the catholyte increased linearly with temperature whereas the viscosity increase was exponential. The main effect of ionic speciation was to decrease the electrical conductivity with increasing metal concentration due to ion association (mainly the formation of bisulphate ion) which lowered the concentration of protons (the most mobile species) in solution. This effect was specially noticeable in the anolyte. Mathematical relationships with correlation coefficients between 0.959 and 1.000 have been found for all the studied variables.

"Sampling is an important step for ore body evaluation and daily plant material balances. The Gy’s equation is regularly used to assess the size of the samples to be collected and to estimate the reproducibility of the collected samples. The equation works well for iron and base metal ores but seems to produce pessimistic estimates of the gold content reproducibility for gold ores. A model is proposed to simulate the division of samples using a standard splitter and discrepancies are observed between the Gy’s equation predictions and simulated samples reproducibility for crushed gold ore. Results of the simulation show that sampling a pile of ore crushed to -2 mm should lead to more reproducible gold content than it is observed in practice and predicted by the Gy’s equation.INTRODUCTION With current gold prices above $1400 per troy ounce operators seek for new economical ore bodies. The metallurgical evaluation of an ore body is one of the numerous steps required to justify the investment for the development of a gold mine. Metallurgical testing requires to sample the ore body and to prepare the ore sample for the grinding and separation tests. The preparation implies crushing the ore usually to less than 2mm and its division into batches of a given weight for subsequent processing. For gold ore testing a batch of crushed ore is ground in a laboratory mill and leached using cyanide. Gold recovered in the solution is used as an indicator of the ore processing amenability. One difficulty associated with ore testing is due to the reproducibility of gold content measurements of the feed sample. According to the Gy’s equation (Gy, 1979; Morisson, 2009) the division of a 20 kg batch of -2 mm ore containing 5 g/t of gold into batches of 1 kg may lead to batches containing 5 ± 5 g/t of gold. For this reason the gold content of a feed sample is usually back calculated from the assays of the solution and solids residues of the leaching process. However, these two assays may contain measurement errors that can propagate through the calculation of the gold recovery. The use of the feed assays as a redundant information could add robustness in the evaluation of ore amenability to processing. This paper discusses the problem of sampling reproducibility for a gold ore. The analysis is carried out with reference to the Gy’s equation for the sampling of particular materials."

The significance of surface settlement over soft ground tunnels is well recognized. Cracked buildings, streets transformed into lakes, broken utility lines, to underpin or not to underpin--all are familiar problems. The basic causes of surface settlement are recognized. Possibly the most common and troublesome cause is "lost ground" during construction. Lost ground refers to removal of a larger volume of ground (Ve) than is eventually occupied by the final tunnel structure (Vt). A number of sources of lost ground in shield tunneling have been identified, as illustrated in Fig. 1. These include 1) face loss, 2) overcutting loss, 3) annular tail void loss, and 4) loss through the lining. The ground generally does not stand unsupported around the completed tunnel lining as illustrated in Fig. 1, but moves in to fill the lost volume, resulting in subsidence of the overlying ground surface as shown. As suggested in Fig. 1, lost ground and surface settlement associated with overcutting and the annular tail void tend to occur systematically along the tunnel length. This "systematic" lost volume is "limited" in the sense that it is restricted to an upper limit determined by the shield and lining geometry. Partially controlled face loss may sometimes contribute to this systematic loss. This lost volume is commonly a few percent of the nominal tunnel volume. The resulting surface settlement over the tunnel is commonly in the range of a few inches or less and develops over a period of hours to days. Although they may have a significant impact on surface facilities, systematic ground loss and settlement frequently have little adverse effect on tunneling progress.

"A mechanistic model of axial charge segregation in rotating drums is presented. We show that granular material composed of different frictional properties diffuse into axial bands as a consequence of concentration fluctuations in the free surface layer that is caused by friction-limited mobility. A Bagnoldian stress assumption ensures an asymmetric free surface profile thereby providing the essential ingredients for the evolution of axial bands and the subsequent band coarsening observed in the literature. The formulation is sensitive to the boundary conditions of tumbling mills, including particle size and density, mill speed, inter-particle bulk friction, end wall friction and drum geometry (length and diameter).INTRODUCTIONA mechanism to fully describe the axial segregation of charge in a rotating drum remains elusive to the mineral processing industry. With regard to low aspect ratio mills (like ball mills), current thinking favours the use of closed circuit mills with correspondingly low residence times to offset the completely random contact probabilities between particles and balls (Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006). Conical end caps are argued to exploit the centrifugal force to achieve a regular gradation of ball size along the mill with larger sizes at the feed end and smaller ones closer to the discharge. However; segregation along the length has been observed in the absence of conical end caps (Oyama, 1939; Levine, 1999): In these investigations, sufficient differences in the particle’s mechanical properties (particle size, density, shape, surface roughness) was enough to successfully achieve axial segregation. Figure 1 shows the segregation of a bimodal distribution (by size) into bands of larger (darker colour) and smaller (lighter colour) particles."

This paper introduces the multi fractal interpolation method (MIM)developed for handling singularities in data analysis and for data interpolation. The MIM is a new moving average model for spatial mapping and interpolation. The model decomposes the raw data into two components: singular and nonsingular components. The former can be characterized by a localized singularity index that quantifies the scaling invariance property of measures from a multifractal point of view. The latter is a smooth component that can be estimated using ordinary kriging or other moving average models. The local singularity index characterizes the concave/convex properties of the neighbourhood values. The paper utilizes a binomial multiplicative cascade model todemonstrate the generation of one- and two-dimensional data with multi-scale singularities which can be modelled by asymmetrical multifractal distribution. It then introduces a generalized moving average mathematical model for analysing and interpolating data with singularities. Finally, it is demonstrated by a one-dimensional case study of de Wijs’ data from a profile in a zinc mine, that incorporation of spatial association and singularity can improve the interpolation result, especially for observed values with significant singularities.

As the U.S. coal industry moves into the next century, it is becoming more apparent that the effective application of new technology is the only way it can remain competitive in the energy marketplace. Examples of this emphasis are with us today in such diverse areas as face-ventilation and excavation-equipment applications. The focus of this new technology is directed toward improvements in health and safety, cost control, and productivity. Room-and-pillar mining accounts for approximately 80% of the nation's underground coal production; this percentage is not expected to decrease markedly in the near future. As such, this paper analyzes the impacts of the changing technological climate on future room-and-pillar operations by comparing a base-case section (current) to three scenarios incorporating new or emerging technology. A microcomputer-based comparative analysis will reflect the changes in section production and costs.

"INTRODUCTION Three representative lots of ore wore obtained from the Aguila minim district in Arizona during the Bureau's exploration of manganese deposits there. Since only selectively mined ore from this district will meet commercial-grade specifications, the ores were studied to determine their amenability to concentration.Although the purpose of the investigation was to determine the possibilities of the district as a source of commercial-grade manganese, testing was sufficiently comprehensive to indicate the response of the ores to several different types of treatment. Many data of secondary importance have been omitted, end only the more pertinent tests are presented in detail.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to. Metals Reserve Company was ferro-grade manganese, grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., O.18 percent; Al12O3, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent.Later the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.O percent iron, and. 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premiums were paid for manganese con¬tent over 48 percent and iron content under 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing loss than 48 percent manganese or more than 6 percent iron or more than U. percent. silica plus alumina.. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that the maximum particle size be 12 inches and that 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material, such as table and flotation concentrates, had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, carbonate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined.."

IT has always seemed to me that mining methods are inventions that follow necessity. I have yet, to be connected with a property where the consultant who has been engaged has laid out a mining method that has been strictly adhered to through the life of the mine. Possibly there are exceptions. As a general rule, perhaps, the method becomes the result of sad experience. I suppose if a person were to attempt to measure the tendency to get away from shrinkage stoping, he would need to send out a questionnaire and expect to receive truthful answers, and, having compiled the results, I think we would find that throughout the country there would be but few cases where present value of product permits the old original so-called shrinkage method to be followed. The method that I had hoped to hear Mr. Fozard expound is strictly an adaptation of shrinkage. Cav-ings do not enter. It was developed by Mr. Fozard and his staff at the Beatson mine of the Kennecott Copper Corp., at, Latouche, Alaska. Stephen Birch, in the TRANSACTIONS in 1923, submitted a brief paper on the mining at Beatson. He stated that a new adaptation of shrinkage was being tried because, although at sur-face the copper .content had been relatively high, at lower levels, in the mine it had decreased.

This paper is a description of certain geologic aspects of the Inspiration mining operation. It is not a geologic description of the Inspiration deposit nor an exposition of all the geologic work involved in the development and exploitation of the deposit. A few specific examples of the application of geology and geostatistics to the mining process are given to illustrate the progress that has been made in making the Inspiration Mine more efficient and cost effective, and a statement of the philosophy of geologic applications is offered.
