CERTAIN alloys1 that, as a result of quenching, are retained in the form of homogeneous solid solution are known to increase in hardness and strength on standing at room temperature or on heating at slightly elevated temperatures. Other alloys" that, on rapid cooling, are held in the form of homogeneous solid solution (as, for example, certain steels) behave in like manner on heating to somewhat higher temperatures. The observed increase in the hardness and strength of these alloys, referred to as "aging" or as "secondary hardness," is widely accepted as being occasioned, either in whole or in part, by the precipitation in submicroscopic form of such constituents as were held in supersaturated solid solution as a result of cooling in excess of a certain critical rate. In earlier discussions of the cause of age hardening or secondary hardness, the question of the hardness of the precipitated particles does not appear to have been raised. At present, however, the general opinion appears to be that age hardening and secondary hardness are occasioned by the precipitation of hard particles within the supersaturated solid substance.3 The authors may be wrong in their belief that the last is a prevailing opinion. Although early Spanish settlers used coal several centuries ago, significant commercial coal mining in New Mexico began in 1861, when the U.S. Army opened a mine to supply Fort Craig. Since then, coal from the state has been used to fuel railroads, lead and copper smelters, and other local industry. In recent years, lower-cost strip mining methods and an increased demand for coal by electric utilities in the Southwest have caused an increase in New Mexico coal production. The coal-bearing regions of New Mexico underlie about 25,000 square miles or20.6 percent of the total area of the state. However, the majority of coal-bearing regions lie under Indian lands that are regulated by the Office of Surface Mining (see Navajo and Hopi data on pages 72-75). Today, most of the coal produced in New Mexico comes from the San Juan Basin in the northwest part of the state and the Raton Area in the north central part. New Mexico's reserves are estimated to be 4.6 billion tons, about one percent of the national reserve. New Mexico's permanent regulatory program was conditionally approved December 3 1, 1980. Its Abandoned Mine Lands Program was approved July 17,198 1.

The swift decline of coal during the period of unprecedented expansion in the Canadian economy is a phenomenon deserving careful examination, because the underlying forces contributing to this decline may have broader implications in our national economy. At the present level of technology, coal is more difficult to process, transport and utilize than liquid and gaseous fuels. Fundamentally, it is a matter of limitation in technique. Because coal is a vast store-house of energy in Canada, the reduction of these limitations is in the long-term national interest.

This paper presents the ventilation design for an underground testing facility in a salt medium. The under-ground workings consist of two 3.6 m-diam (12 ft-diam) watertight shafts and about 1830 m (6000 ft) of drifting. These facilities are designed to provide access for an in situ testing of a salt horizon in which a variety of hazardous and nonhazardous materials could be temporarily stored or permanently deposited. The ventilation system includes a design basis for gassy mine conditions and provides for the option of bulk air cooling and heating.

Environmentally-friendly, safe and cost-effective technology for stope drilling has successfully been introduced at TauTona mine. It has enabled the problem of inadequate compressed air pressure and its downgrading impact on production capability to be overcome. The paper traces the development process which culminated in the conversion of the entire stoping operation at TauTona to electric drilling. Background work which took place at other mines is also described. Statistics of performance improvements are provided. 1. Introduction Holman?s Silver series and the Seco S215 were drills that had a measurable impact on the South African gold mining industry. It is too soon to say whether Hilti will join those great names. However, there is no doubt that the introduction of electric drills into the harsh and unforgiving world of deep level gold mining is a significant development. History has shown that being the first to enter a new technology is no guarantee of long-term success. The pain and suffering which accompany the birth of anything new can deplete the energy of the innovator while at the same time creating opportunities for competitors to leapfrog him. In addition to commitment and enthusiasm, the innovator must therefore also possess, or have access to stamina and resourcefulness to overcome the unexpected difficulties which will inevitably arise. All of these were needed for the Hilti project.

CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Cananea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geo- logic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline.

INTRODUCTION A technique is needed to apply the flotation method successfully to apply the flotation method successfully to low grade and complex ore bearing hard-to-float oxide minerals. Thus it is necessary to find a new selective, powerful collector or to develop a new flotation process. Some attempts to use two or more kinds of collectors combined in flotation have been made but the principle of the reaction between the collectors used and the surface of mineral as well as the effect of combined collectors on flotation has not yet been fully understood. As part of the study on the improvement of selective collection in flotation, we have been investigating the flotation of minerals using two kinds of organic reagents, one of which is a conventional collector. We found xanthates were able to adsorb even onto the surface of oxide mineral, with the help of another organic reagent, e.g. a chelate compound (1). Furthermore, a notable effect of combined reagents such as the xanthate-amino acid combination (2) was found on the reagent adsorption phenomena and the collection phenomena, depending on the combination of reagents. The present study was carried out to clarify the effects of adding two kinds of collectors to the collection of mineral in flotation in the following two cases: (1) joint use of xanthate and di-alkyl dithiophosphate for galena collection and (2) joint use of a cationic collector with xanthate for scheelite collection.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the emission control methods, including the capital investments and operating cost, necessary for further reducing lead levels in ambient air at the Glover, Herculaneum, and Buick smelter-refineries in Missouri and the East Helena, MT, smelter. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed more stringent lead in ambient air standards than those currently in effect. This report presents theoretically achievable lead emission reductions and estimated capital and operating costs. Lead emission inventories theoretically can be reduced from 1985 levels by 2,421 lb/d at the three Missouri operations by containing and filtering fugitive emissions within structural enclosures and baghouses. The aggregated capital and operating costs in 1986 dollars using conventional environmental and workplace technologies are estimated to be $250,014,100 and $18,507,800, respectively. Estimated total incremental cost is $0.063/lb as refined lead. Additional regulatory costs attributable to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSKA), U.S. Department of Labor, workplace standards are included since proposed environmental controls may otherwise degrade workplace conditions. Continuous drossing is evaluated as an alternative to conventional OSHA controls. Substituting continuous drossing for conventional work- place technology results in an estimated aggregated capital and operating costs of $258,344,800 and $15,719,600, respectively. Estimated total incremental cost is $0.062/1b as refined lead. For comparison, the average open market price of refined lead during the first quarter of 1986 was $0.184/lb.

A method has been developed in the USSR for processing the low-grade high-silica raw material by sintering the aluminacontaining mixes, which is widely used both as a principal process and in combination with the Bayer process. The process parameters were obtained on the basis of a study of interaction and equilibrium states of the individual profiles of a multi-component system Na20-A1203-Fe203-CaO-Si02 at the sintering temperatures. The compositions and melting temperatures of eutectics of the individual profiles are given. It is shown that the most easily meltable mix is one having a red mud as the main component. The variations are given of the sinter physical characteristics and recovery of the useful components with the sintering temperature. Considerations are given on selection of a sinter leaching flowsheet and directions are shown for improving a series method of processing the low-grade raw material.

Data given in this paper indicate that certain relations exist between different characteristics of sandstone. These relations are not rigid, for all sandstones are more or less heterogeneous. Not every increment of a given horizon follows exactly the relationship; however, studying a reservoir as a whole from a large number of samples, definite trends are found to exist. Apparently nature's processes of sedimentation and diagenesis are such as to give some degree of uniformity. Average relationships are valuable because electrical measurements in a borehole comprise a considerable volume of rock near the hole. Also, it is desirable that a given producing reservoir be studied as a unit. In a permeable reservoir whose pores are filled with a saline solution, it was found that the total porosity and the type of sandstone influence the relationship between its electrical resistivity and the RO and the resistivity of the brine R,. The relation can be expressed by the following empirical equation, Ro = R10O— [i] where 0 is the porosity expressed as a fraction and the numerical value of the exponent lies between 1.8 to 2.0 for consolidated sandstones, and is about 1.3 for clean, unconsolidated packs. This equation indicates that an appropriate electrical log can be used to estimate the porosity of a saline water-bearing reservoir when Rw and the type of rock are known. The fraction R0rw, is called the "formation resistivity factor." It reflects the effect of the nonconducting rock structure on the resistivity of the salt water that fills the tortuous paths through which the electricity must pass. The formation resistivity factor F is found to be related to permeability k. In this case the type of rock plays an important role, as shown by the relation F = ak-b [2] where the values of a and b must be determined experimentally for each horizon. Therefore Eq. I rather than Eq. 2 is used when it is desired to determine the value of F, because small changes in rock structure particularly in the pore size are not critical. Another useful relation, R = R0S- [3] where R = resistivity of rock when partially saturated with brine and partly with oil or gas, S = fraction of the pore space filled with brine, and n equals approximately 2 for both unconsolidated and consolidated sandstone, shows that the connate water of an oil or gas reservoir can be estimated in situ from a resistivity log. Equation 3 shows that in order to estimate the water content of a reservoir a knowledge of R and Ro is essential. The first value can be obtained from the electrical log when all factors influencing the resistivity curve can be properly taken into account. "The jute fiber is one of the most rigid natural lignocellulosic fibers, which has since the last decade been investigated as possible reinforcement for polymeric composites. In the present work, the tensile properties of DGEBA/TETA epoxy composites reinforced with jute fibers with different diameters were investigated. Composites with volume fractions up to 30% of continuous and aligned jute fibers were tensile tested at room temperature to evaluate the ultimate strength, elastic modulus and total strain. For each volume fraction, separated fibers with smaller larger diameters were tested. The results indicated that the tensile properties tend to improve with increasing volume fraction of the thinnest jute fibers. The role played by the fiber/matrix interaction was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy.IntroductionThe interest of this research is to develop composites with epoxy resin matrix reinforced with continuous and aligned jute fibers, for applications in various industries, including construction and automotive industry. Conflicts related to the use of non-renewable forms of energy are increasing the interest to enter the market to replace natural materials, synthetic materials synthetics have a higher power consumption in its manufacture [ 1-4].Therefore, applications of natural lignocellulosic fibers obtained from cellulose-based plants are receiving increased attention as an alternative to replace more environmentally correct nonrecyclable materials, energy intensive and glass fiber composites in [5-6]. The use of composites reinforced with natural fibers is a reflection of the concerns with environmental issues such as pollution caused by waste that is not biodegradable or cannot be incinerated and climate change due to C02 emissions associated with the processes of intensive energy and also motivates this work to develop self-sustaining, since natural fibers generate a source of income, especially in developing countries, where most originate, encouraging the cultivation of non-food agriculture [7-9]. Additionally, it is worth also remembering that these fibers come from renewable sources, in addition to being abundant, inexpensive and have a relevant set of mechanical properties [10]."

The solvent extraction (SX) processes of the three pressure acid leach (PAL) nickel plants in Western Australia have been reviewed. The use of intermediate precipitation, solids/liquid separation and re-leach in the three W A nickel plants make these processes complicated and costly in capital and ?operation. The research work carried out by the SX group at the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy I CSIRO Minerals has led to the development of direct solvent extraction (DSX) processes to recover and purify nickel and cobalt from leach solutions. The simplicity of the process flowsheets and the expected savings in capital and operating costs are the major advantages of the new DSX processes over the reviewed processes. By using a new synergistic organic system in semi-continuous tests with a pilot plant leach solution (after iron precipitation) from BHP-BiIliton Stainless Steel Materials, the metal values (Ni and Co) together with zinc and copper were separated from the major impurities (Mn, Mg and Ca, together with Cl) in the first SX circuit. The co-extracted manganese, magnesium and' calcium were easily scrubbed out. After stripping, the metal values (Ni and Co) together with zinc and copper were concentrated, resulting in a much smaller second SX circuit and equipment in the down stream processes. The extraction and stripping kinetics of the metals with the new synergistic organic solution were very fast. The extraction and stripping almost reached steady state within 0.5 minutes. Semi-continuous test work with a synthetic leach solution, a cobalt pilot plant leach solution from Peko Rehabilitation Project Pty Ltd and a synthetic solution to simulate a concentrated laterite leach solution from BHP-Billiton Stainless Steel Materials showed that manganese, calcium, copper and zinc can be effectively and efficiently separated from nickel, cobalt and magnesium by extraction, scrubbing and stripping. This led to the development of another DSX process using D2EHPA to recover nickel and cobalt from leach solutions.

In recent years attempts have been made to fight open and intensive mine fires by the use of special extinguishers, which are able to produce great volumes of inert gases directed into the fire zone. These extinguishers are derived from turbo-jet engines used in aircrafts and adopted for operations in mine conditions. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention to a computer simulation method, enabling studies of dynamical behaviour of mine ventilation processes disturbed by open fires, which are also influenced by measures taken during fire fighting actions i.a. the mentioned operating extinguishers. The first part of this paper gives an account of the principles on which the computer simulation program, concerning the non- steady mine ventilation process, the fire as a heat source and the extinguisher as a source of inert gas and moisture has been based. The next part of this paper deals with simplifying assumptions and the subsequent limitations of the derived simulation pro- gram. Finally, from an example of a computer simulation, the results will be presented and relations shown between parameters characterising the ventilation process during the fire fighting action.

INTRODUCTION SEVERAL years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the-Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuation between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederick P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Service, U. S. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to, gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. A distinctive feature of the goldfields of Victoria was the extrac- tion of gold from deep leads, that is the buried river beds of Vic- toria's ancient rivers and streams. It is estimated that about 265,000 kg of gold was produced from Victoria's deep lead mines which comprises about 11.5% of Victoria's total production of gold (Bowen, 1974). The significance of deep lead mining for Victoria, however, went far beyond its economic contribution to Victoria. If Profes- sor Blainey is correct it was the frustrations of mining gold from deep alluvial leads in Ballarat during 1854 which precipitated the Eureka Stockade (Blainey, 1963, 46-52). This event resulted in the implementation of a fair mining administration and was an emphatic statement of the rise of democratic movements in Australia. Much of the technology and skill for mining deep leads had to be developed locally because at that time no other major gold- field elsewhere in Australia or the world had gold deposits with comparable problems. Deep lead mining in Victoria was there- fore largely a home grown industry and the equipment for that industry was often designed and produced in Victoria.
